It’s a big month for the UK, as we celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee over an extended Bank Holiday weekend (2nd - 5th June ’22). What an amazing lady she is, having dedicated her life to crown & country; I doubt we will ever see a monarch quite like her again… Whatever your plans for the Jubilee weekend, I hope you have a great time, and I hope HRH does too! There are plenty of great events planned this month in our local area; one is Ashtead Village Day, always a big family attraction, as well as countless street and garden parties to attend. We’ve even included an extra page of What’s On listings so we could include lots of wonderful events. I’m sure there will be plenty to keep you busy! Let’s hope the weather holds up! June is also the month for World Environment Day on 5th June, Bike Week and Child Safety Week from 6th to 12th June, and World Giraffe Day on 21st June! And of course, we must not forget Father’s Day on 19th June, a time to remember that very important person in your life. Until next time, enjoy whatever June brings your way, Kindest Regards

Your Children’s Future Everyone wants the best for their children; health, happiness, a good education and financial security. But what other steps should you be taking now to protect their future, particularly when you are no longer around to do so? The importance of having a carefully thought out and professionally drafted Will should not be underestimated. What happens if you die without making a Will? If you die intestate (without a valid Will in place), your estate will be distributed in accordance with the Intestacy Rules which are unlikely to reflect your wishes nor the reasonable expectations of those who have been bereaved. For example:
• If you are married or in a civil partnership, do
not automatically assume that everything passes to the survivor. Depending on the size of your estate, your assets could be split between the survivor and the children.
• The Intestacy Rules do not make any provision
for the survivor at all, unless you are married or in a civil partnership. The law simply does not recognise a ‘common law spouse’, and so if you are cohabiting, the survivor may not receive anything on your death. This can leave the survivor in the difficult position of having to bring a claim for financial provision against his or her own children or step-children.
Why make a Will? There are other strong reasons for putting your Will in place:
• You get to choose the person(s) to be the legal
guardians of your infant children (those under 18), rather than relying on those left behind to decide for themselves or take the matter to the family courts to determine. The legal guardians acquire parental responsibility and step into your shoes as decision makers, making decisions
such as where the children should live, whom they should have contact with and where they should attend school.
• You can ensure that your children’s inheritance
is looked after, rather than frittered away, by delaying their age of entitlement beyond 18 years and appointing people you trust to manage the trust fund until they are old enough to take responsibility.
• With an increase in remarriage, it is important to
ensure that suitable provision is made for children from previous relationships (and former spouses) avoiding the cost and emotional trauma of court proceedings. The use of trusts can ensure that spouses and children from both marriages are financially supported.
• If you are providing for children with additional
needs, then Will trusts can be good vehicles for making assets available to help individuals without prejudicing their right to means tested state support. Protective trusts can also assist if your children are particularly vulnerable, for example, if they have a drug or alcohol problem, are in a relationship that is breaking down or just not capable of managing the funds sensibly.
Making a Will - how TWM can help Although it can be a difficult topic to talk about, taking the time now to organise your affairs for when you are no longer around can make all the difference to your children. At TWM Solicitors, we recognise that everyone’s families and financial circumstances are different, and we pride ourselves on providing a clear and concise explanation of the available options. If you would like to explore this further, then please contact us. WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945
The Standing Committee - It’s all change on the Ashtead Residents’ Association Standing Committee. Stepping down after many years in their respective roles were Hannah Parkes, Treasurer, Pam Ventham-Smith, Hon. Secretary and Jean Bradley, Events Secretary. Also resigning as Chairman, but remaining on the Committee was Glynis Peterkin. Between them all we have lost many years of experience and that is difficult to replace. However, four new recruits have come on board, and Martin Cox will replace Hannah Parkes as Treasurer and David Knoyle will replace Pam Ventham-Smith as the Hon. Secretary. We say thank you to those leaving the Committee and welcome to those joining. At the moment, no-one has put their name forward to be considered for the Chairman’s role, but Glynis is remaining on the Committee to ensure a smooth handover to whoever takes over. Ashtead Station - The four flower beds in the Car Park of Ashtead Station were taken on by the Residents’ Association after the redesign of the station building and car park. Originally just weed patches, (pressed) volunteers from City of London Freemen’s School helped dig them over, and then enthusiastic volunteers from Barnett Wood Lane School helped plant the new shrubs. Since then, the beds have been managed by perhaps half a dozen volunteers, but now require some dedicated TLC to trim the plants and weed the beds. Work is normally done on a Sunday morning and if anyone would like to volunteer for perhaps two hours of work, please contact David at ashteadra@tiscali.co.uk. Just bring normal gardening clothes and gloves, plus spade, fork, shears and a trowel. Many thanks. Litter - After a successful Spring Clean organised by Lynda Coburn the village was 10 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - JUNE 2022
looking litter free – for a while. Sadly, litter is again starting to appear on our streets and we would encourage residents to be proactive and pick up the litter and put it in the nearest bin. The Wildlife Aid Foundation has started an initiative called “iDot” - https://idot-waf.org.uk/ which calls for individuals to take a personal interest and “Do one thing”, a simple action you can do every day. If we all do one thing every day it adds up to a big plus for the environment. Picking up one item of litter that someone has dropped, if repeated countless times by others would have a dramatic effect. Less harmful waste going into watercourses, rivers and the sea poisoning wildlife – and affecting our lives too. Other factors include using less water each day, walking rather than driving and going digital rather than requesting paper statements. Food Bank - We understand the Leatherhead Food Bank is short on supplies. If every resident visiting Tesco’s just bought one extra item it would hardly affect their overall bill. If you read iDot above then this is iBot – I buy one thing. Remember that when next shopping. Items required are: - Powdered milk; Long-life sponge puddings; Custard; Rice pudding; Instant mash; Tinned fruit; Ketchup; Long-life UHT milk (semiskimmed and full fat only); Washing up liquid; Shampoo; Adult toothpaste and Deodorant – all kinds. And finally – as all the news broadcasters say... June sees the Jubilee Celebrations as Her Majesty the Queen celebrates 70 years on the throne. Ashtead Residents’ Association wishes her well and offers our thanks for all these years of selfless service to the Nation and the Commonwealth. David Baker Committee Member

FETCHAM RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION FOR ALL COMMUNITY, INFORMATION, HELP AND SUPPORT VISIT: WWW.FETCHAMRESIDENTS.CO.UK EMAIL: CHAIRMAN@FETCHAMRESIDENTS.CO.UK Our late Chairman Tim Waller
Routine matters in Fetcham were very sadly overshadowed last month by the passing of our Chairman Tim Waller. After a long battle with cancer, Tim died peacefully in Epsom Hospital on May 3rd. He was aged 75. His commitment to the Fetcham community and to the FRA was total. Despite his illness he courageously chaired our AGM in mid-April as usual, delivering his report of the FRA’s activities over the year and introducing our guest speakers. He had a clear vision of what he wanted to do, and he was determined to go on doing it for as long as possible. Sadly, however this was his last public engagement. Tim became our Chairman in April 2019 and immediately brought to bear his formidable talents, and the experience he’d gained in finance and business. His record speaks for itself. In just three short years he raised the FRA’s profile, more than doubled its membership, increased its income and charitable giving, and extended its influence. Crucially, he has left us with sure foundations. We have a modern website, which carries
Fetcham news and information and even has an interactive mapping tool allowing residents to track planning applications. He was an enthusiastic supporter of our twice-yearly Newsletter and made sure all its production costs were covered by cajoling our local traders to advertise. He was also adept at finding new talent to join our Committee. It is a mark of his great industry and commitment that he has left us with so many ongoing projects he would loved to have seen completed. Projects such as the ongoing negotiations with SES Water over the future of the land at Fetcham Springs; efforts to improve the look of the village shopping area including a new village sign; applying pressure on our highways authorities to prevent speeding, and of course making sure that the promises made in the proposed Local Plan are honoured. We are truly indebted to him. Ian Anderson PS: Our subscription year runs from April 1st, but it is not too late to join or renew. Either visit our website, or use the form below. Your support gives Fetcham a stronger voice.

TECHNOLOGY & I.T.
Are you ready for ReadyPrint? Almost every day we have someone in the shop talking about how expensive genuine ink cartridges are and especially at the moment with the rising costs of living. They often ask us; is there a way I can save money on ink without having to buy cheaper alternative cartridges that could ruin my printer? We asked the question and Epson answered with their ReadyPrint Flex scheme which according to them could save you up to 70% on the cost of ink. ReadyPrint is a flexible printing plan for the latest Epson Expression Home and Workforce printers, where you pay a fixed amount per month for a set number of pages.
30 Pages per month
£1.29 per month
50 Pages per month
£1.99 per month
100 Pages per month
£3.49 per month
300 Pages per month
£9.99 per month
500 Pages per month
£16.49 per month
Need to print less? Roll over unused pages for 2 months Need to print more? Each additional page is just £0.10
So, whether you print a little or a lot there should be a great value option for you. It will also help ensure that you never run out of ink again because as soon as your ink cartridges start running out Epson will ship them straight to your door so you hopefully never run out of ink again! As everyone’s printing needs vary so much and can change so quickly Epson will let you change your plan up or down on a monthly basis, so it stays flexible to what you need and want to do. Give us a call and we can help check your printers compatibility, answer any questions or get you signed up.

1. Leatherhead Museum has a new display this summer showing Leatherhead in Old Photos. Located in the upstairs rear room, formerly the office at Hampton Cottage, 64 Church Street, the historical photos have been selected from the Local History Society’s archive collection. The exhibition is a mix of about 50 photos showing local landscapes, businesses and people ranging over the period 1850 to 2000. Comparisons between the world depicted and today’s landscape shows the visual decline over the last century. The Museum, run entirely by volunteers, is open on Thursday and Friday afternoons 20 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - JUNE 2022

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead Want to give your jeans a new lease of life? Do you have a favourite pair of jeans that you wish you could keep on wearing? If you have some that fit well, you want to make them last. Small tears can look trendy but are easily repaired. Denim jeans are costly to produce and expensive. It takes around 1,800 gallons of water to grow enough cotton for just one pair of jeans? That is more water than it takes to make a ton of cement. When you also take into account the dyeing process and machine washing almost 9,982 gallons of water are used. So how can we make our clothes last longer? The Japanese technique of Sashiko patching was born out of necessity in communities where repairing clothing was the only option. Patches were added to keep in the warmth and were done by hand. Like the practice of Kintsugi for ceramics, where each mended crack is seen as adding value, mended garments become enriched by the repairs. This is an excellent, easy method for mending jeans, personalizing them and saving money. Sashiko is visible repairing using hand stitching, traditionally in white but a contrasting colour can work well, using several rows of running stitch to secure the patch. Cross stitch can also make an attractive pattern on either side of the patch, which is placed over or under the tear. Research Sashiko and other similar techniques for more ideas. Why has fast fashion gained such a bad reputation? Fast fashion manufacturers produce large quantities of cheap clothing which is not made to last. In doing so, they cause environmental damage on a vast scale through the use of chemicals, put pressure on physical resources, whilst maintaining poor work conditions and low pay. Consumer trends have also been exacerbating the problems. In 2020, more than two tonnes of clothing were bought each minute in the UK more than any other country in Europe, and much of this will later go to landfill. What else should we do? Clothing can be difficult to recycle as it is often a mixture of fabrics. Selling, swopping, repairing, altering and reusing prolongs the life of clothes. Only buy garments you like and wear them as much as possible. Hire clothes for those one-off events or choose outfits that can be worn again. Sustainability is about using the resources that we have, whilst reducing waste. Be resourceful and develop the skills to prolong the life of your clothes.

SUMMER NIGHTS… TIME TO CELEBRATE THE 1950S GREASE-STYLE
There is a new show coming to town! Following the success of previous Secret Cinema-style charity events at an Ashtead church, step back to the 1950s and look out for the Pink Ladies, T-Birds, Sandy and Danny and cheerleaders on a summer weekend coming very soon. On Saturday 9 July, a team of local residents, aptly named ‘The Creative Collective’ will transform St George’s Christian Centre, on Barnett Wood Lane, Ashtead, to the set of cultclassic Grease. Step into the school hall of Rydell High, teaming with the Pink Ladies and T-Birds; grab a ‘Danny Dog’ or vegan ‘Doody Dog’ from the Dog House, and enjoy fantastic music from the film and musical era, performed live by a local band and choir. So come to the dance at Rydell High, step onto the dance floor and show your moves at “the national dance off”. Maybe even get a dance with Ashtead’s very own Sandy and Danny! And remember Vince Fontaine’s advice: “It doesn't matter if you win or lose, it's what you do with your dancin' shoes.” 36 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - JUNE 2022
Before the film begins you can learn the hand jive with ex-Strictly star Hanna de la Huerta, ladies can call into the Pink Ladies Boudoir to perfect their hair and make-up and add the essential 1950s eye-flick. And Principal McGee and secretary Blanche will be keeping their watchful eye – listen out for their announcements! Doors open 7pm, tickets cost £25 each (including hotdog) with all profits going to Surrey charity Be Me Project. Age 16yrs & above only, bring your own drinks and change for the Candy Shop. Ticket includes all entertainment, a hotdog at the Frosty Palace and of course watching the film itself - with live-action sketches throughout. Music will be performed by Ashtead Glee Club and in-house band Thunder Road - get ready to sing and dance along. So join in the fun, dress up as a character from the film, or to capture 1950s style - you are in for the night of your lives! Tickets are limited so to avoid disappointment please books soon via Summer Nights. https://sgsg.churchsuite. com/events/2i8583fw

This year we are featuring around 15 varied and attractive private gardens, including two new ones. In addition, we welcome back Polesden Lacey Infants School, Liberham Lodge (formerly Gracewell), The Grange Centre and Little Bookham Allotments. Open Gardens Day raises money for the upkeep of our historic Old Barn Hall where delicious home-baked cakes, rolls and drinks will be served throughout the day and there will be plants for sale. In addition you can visit the Country Market stall. Find out more about gardens in the programme which will be available at our ticket outlets or can be downloaded from our website at www.bookhamopengardens.co.uk. It contains useful information on parking, toilets, where else you can buy plants, wheelchair accessibility, and key footpaths to help you move between gardens where there’s no direct road route. Lots of people go round on bicycles but please be mindful of pedestrians on these paths. Sorry there will be no minibus service but do consider car sharing if you can. As you go between gardens, look out for
beautifully decorated Blue Hearts, indicating a verge of lovely flowers to attract pollinators that are so important for biodiversity. Many of our gardens are wildlife-friendly too. mole valley W.I. april report Our President, Julie welcomed us all to the meeting, including a potential new member. A new members’ evening has been organised for June, the first one for two years. The two Charities we will be supporting this year are Sight for Surrey who are in Fetcham and Bookham Baptist’s Childrens’ Centre who have lost local authority and Government funding. Members responded to the request for silver blister packs and these will be taken to Superdrug in Guildford. We have been linked to Lym Jubilee in Cheshire since 1992 and our correspondent, Anne Glyn who always writes her letters, read out the latest one received from Lym. They have 132 members with a waiting list and one of their speakers was Lady Dodd, Ken Dodd’s wife. There are ten sub groups who meet on a regular basis, including, badminton, majong and gardening clubs. We have a visit this month to two gardens in Tadworth with a pub lunch or picnic and our lunch in June at the Effingham Golf Club is well supported. Our speaker represented Joint Waste Solutions who are the Waste Department for Mole Valley Council. We were told what we could and couldn’t recycle and to help there is an App “Surrey Recycles” Our next meeting is on Tuesday 14th June Fetcham Village Hall at 7.30. HOME WANTED! Ruben
Ruben is a black & white semi-long haired cat aged about 4 years. He had been a stray for some months but when taken into care, he settled into his new surroundings very quickly and is a lovely friendly, gentle boy. He loves his catnip toy, is chatty and is inquisitive & investigates everything – he will need a home with lots of stimulation. He would suit a family who are experienced with cats, with children over 10 years of age but no other pets; he needs a safe garden. Ruben would prefer a home with someone around at least part of the day.. If you could give Ruben his forever home please call Sue 0208 390 3165 and / or email adoption@epsom.cats.org.uk.
Epsom Ewell & District Branch http://www.epsom.cats.org.uk If you cannot adopt a cat but would still like to help us please go to https://www.justgiving.com/Epsom-CatsProtection
As we have around 7,000 cats and kittens in our care at any one time, we will find you the perfect feline friend. www.cats.org.uk Reg Charity 203644 (England and Wales) and SC037711 (Scotland)

The Arts Society Ashtead provides fascinating talks on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the Peace Memorial Hall as well as visits to places of interest and cultural tours.
Tuesday 21st June 2022 (talk at 10.30, doors open 9.30 for coffee)
Music & Art in the Age of Vermeer
Musical instruments are found throughout the paintings of the Dutch Golden Age, but knowledge of their symbolic meaning, and how they sounded to their original audiences, is often lost today. The associations of music with love and intimacy, enlivened by the sound quality and tone of the instruments of the period, help unravel their meaning. From Jan Steen’s brothel scenes to the solemn interiors of Vermeer and Pieter de Hooch, this lecture charts the vast meaning and rich significance of music in Dutch art. For the remainder of 2022/23, The Arts Society Ashtead will be offering another packed programme, with our ever-popular monthly arts-related talks, as well as four visits to places of interest, a Special Interest Day, and a Cultural Tour to the Bournemouth area in October. Walking Groups
Leatherhead Lion Jim Malynn and Friend of Lions John Davis have planned a series of day rides to help raise funds for the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance which is based in Chatham, Kent. Since there is an obvious connection between helicopters and windmills, the whirly bits, we have based the routes around visiting every windmill that still has sails in the three counties. We will drive to the start of each route and some routes are circular while others will finish with a train ride to return to the cars. Visit our JustGiving page for details of our schedule. We would love to welcome you on any of the routes but especially the last one which will end at the Chatham airfield where we will meet representatives of the charity and other Lion Members to celebrate our completion of the fundraiser. This last ride is in two parts, the final one being just 10ish miles (5 each way). Why not come and join us on the rides or simply wave us off at the start points, all support welcome.

‘Dame Laura Knight’ by Rosalind Whyte,
This lecture provides an overview of Dame Laura Knight’s career as an artist and some of the remarkable achievements in her long life. In 1936 she became the first woman to be elected as a full member of the Royal Academy in London, 168 years after its establishment. In her extraordinary career she painted landscapes, portraits and seascapes, as well as scenes from the circus, the ballet and the theatre. She was the only woman to be given War Commissions in both the First and Second World Wars and the only British artist to cover the Nuremberg Trials of 1946. Please join us in The Parish Church Hall, Church Road, Leatherhead, KT22 8BD. It is free for members, but visitors are very welcome for a fee of £5. JUNE BOOK REVIEWS Ashtead Library has these books to reserve, so come & put your name down. Woodfield Lane, Ashtead, Surrey KT21 2BQ ‘Verity’ By Colleen Hoover. This story is a mild psychological thriller. The story starts with two people, Lowen and Jeremy, having a chance meeting. However, we are led to believe that this may be more than just chance, as Lowen, a struggling author, starts working for Jeremy Crawford. She lives in the Crawford home, working as a ghost writer for his wife - a famous author recently injured in a car accident. Lowen makes a series of discoveries, including manuscripts from the wife detailing murder. She becomes increasingly suspicious and paranoid. The ending is tense - you may not be able to put this book down!
‘Under a Greek Moon’ By Carol Kirkwood. This is a lovely gentle read, with plenty of description to capture your imagination, especially about Hollywood life and mostly the Greek Islands. The main character Shauna is a famous actress. She is a romantic at heart, wishing to ‘find her prince charming’. She returns to her beloved Greece following a scandal. As expected, here she remembers her first love. But Hollywood catches up with her and soon she is noted on the island as famous. I really enjoyed reading how her life changed, especially as she fell in love with both a charming man and the Greek lifestyle.
‘The Swimmer ’ By Graham Norton. This is one of the Quick Reads selection - Quick Reads are short books written by best-selling authors. Described as ‘perfect for regular readers and those who are still to discover the pleasure of reading’, I picked this up as I was having trouble concentrating on longer novels plus I thought it would give me a chance to check out this author’s style of writing before reading one of his longer books. I did enjoy the book on the whole and raced through it - well, it was a Quick Read after all! - although I felt some characters lacked depth (perhaps due to the short length?). Perfect if you are short on time and fancy a mini mystery.
All books are available to reserve at Ashtead Library.

“If you like, I can fix that guttering for you - for cash?” NEIL CLARKE, 13363 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION
Hearing that kind of phrase is, for some reason, more common towards the latter part of every year. Perhaps, with winter approaching, opportunist “rogue traders” see a good opportunity to take advantage of people’s vulnerabilities and the desire to have their homes safe, secure and watertight for the coming colder months? Recently, however, we have noticed that this kind of activity is happening during other times of the year, including the summer months. Surrey Police continues to work alongside a number of partner agencies, developing initiatives to help all members of our communities be and feel safe in their own homes. As part of ongoing work we do already, your Neighbourhood Teams are focusing particular attention on providing guidance, support and awareness to members of the community on how to spot and deal with cold callers, rogue traders and distraction burglars. You should know, however, that you have a right to refuse to deal with anyone who comes to your door uninvited. You can always refuse to answer if you have any concerns about the caller. If you have a door chain and do intend to answer the door, then put the chain across before opening the door. Distraction burglaries can be particularly upsetting as they prey on people’s trust in “authority”. For example, a person may call, saying that they are from a utility company, calling to check on reports of “faulty” water pipes, gas leaks or problems with the electricity supply. Once they gain entry, they will distract 58 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - JUNE 2022
the resident by asking them to keep an eye on a tap or meter, while others go elsewhere in the house to “carry out checks”. Many people have been distressed to find they have had money, bank cards, jewellery or other items taken in just a few moments. Please insist on seeing appropriate identification for anyone claiming to be from a utility company. You can also telephone the company to find out if they are operating in the area. In fact, even if a uniformed police officer calls at your door they will be perfectly happy for you to ask to see their warrant card to identify themselves, or you can even phone us on 101 to confirm an officer’s details to your satisfaction. Rogue traders tend to be people who offer to carry out work for cash, quite often for sums of money far greater than is actually justified. Examples could be, repairs to “leaking” guttering, replacing ridge tiles, repainting windows and sills, cutting back hedges and other general maintenance work. Many of these people are not even competent to carry out work of this kind and apply pressure to get the customer to go to their bank to draw out the large sum of cash in payment. You can always contact Trading Standards to ask for names of reputable organisations that will carry out work for a fair price. In short, traders who offer to carry out work for cash uninvited should be viewed with some suspicion. You have a right to refuse to deal with anyone who calls at your home uninvited. If you are ever put in this position and feel in any way vulnerable, please call the police on 999.

LEATHERHEAD LIBRARY
A thank you to all the children who took part in our Lego Challenge during the Easter holidays. The task was to build anything they wanted but with limited bricks and within 20 minutes. We had some brilliant, imaginative entries including farms, jails, and an exciting hostage scenario. Well done to all. If you enjoy knitting or needlework, come along to a Knit and Natter sessions on Tuesday afternoons from 2.00 till 4.00. Open to everyone from beginners to the more experienced. It is a time to share ideas and put the world right with a cup of tea and a biscuit. We have wonderful plans for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee including a Jubilee Tea Party on Wednesday 1 June, so fingers crossed the weather is kind to us. We are also challenging our younger visitors to design a garden for the queen. As usual prizes will be won. Watch out for more information. The Summer Reading Scheme is approaching. This is a national scheme aimed at keeping children reading during the holidays. We love help from young people to register children, help with craft activities and much more. Details on the Volunteering pages on our website.
