This is a good month. Spring really is here. March is the month of St David’s Day on the 1st, International Women’s Day on the 8th, Mother’s Day on the 14th, and St Patrick’s Day on the 17th, And the clocks will go forward an hour at the end of the month on Sunday 28th March, providing lighter evenings and a huge signal that the winter months are done for another year! Phew it’s all about to happen! As well as this, the much anticipated vaccination programme is now well underway; vaccines are being administered across the country by the NHS and an army of volunteers. At the time of writing this 1300 vaccination centres have opened nationwide delivering thousands of doses every day. This is the biggest immunisation drive in NHS history and I cannot help but admire the planning and logistics required to make it happen. And I thought getting 5 magazines out of the door every month was challenging! I’m delighted to report that we are able to bring you a little more local information & general news this month as we move slowly, slowly towards a little more normality; the national Census will be round later this month, so do keep an eye out for that, we also bring you news regarding Mole Valley Arts Alive on page 22, and details about a wonderful national charity called ‘The Good Grief Trust’ see page 26 for that. The Cat’s Protection League have a couple of precious felines who need a ‘special home’, I wonder if you can help? I’ll leave you to discover the other little gems within…. Whatever this month has in store for you, please be safe, Warmest Regards,

Family Mediation: How it works One of the many challenges of the COVID pandemic is the strain placed on marriages and relationships as a result of homeworking, lack of external stimulus, home educating children and friction that can tip over quickly under the strain. The hope is that marriages weather the COVID storm, and we can support and refer those clients for whom this is an objective. However, many couples who have concluded that the marriage has broken down beyond repair, seek to resolve issues arising as amicably and fairly as possible with the interest and welfare of children being at the forefront. Mediation is a voluntary and confidential process, optional for both parties, and is now undertaken by many couples. It is entirely forward-looking, from the point of separation, with the aim to reach legally appropriate proposals for a financial settlement or children arrangements, or both. During a series of joint meetings (which can be held remotely), a solicitor family mediator can guide and inform parties in dealing with financial disclosure, and having done so to assist the parties to reach their own proposals in setting individual objectives and the needs of the whole family.
Safeguarding screening and conflict checks are undertaken for all potential mediation clients. Your safety and wellbeing are our primary objectives, and if our mediators consider that the process is not suitable, for any reason, we will notify you and your partner, but without breaching any confidences. It is always recommended that prior to, or during the course of, mediation clients seek independent confidential advice from a specialist family solicitor. For clients who are undertaking mediation, at other solicitors’ practices or with non-lawyer mediators, we are pleased to offer advice and support through the process, and to undertake the preparation of legal documentation upon conclusion. At TWM, you can talk to one of our specialist family solicitor mediators about whether mediation would be suitable. We are also able to offer family mediation to help with issues between separating couples who are not married. To find out more about how our family mediation team could help you with your personal situation, please contact us. Blanche Douglass - It is with great sadness that we have to tell you that our President, Blanche Douglass, passed away on 12th January; her death was not Covid-related. Blanche was such a strong supporter of our work and we will miss her very much. A full obituary will be published in the spring issue of Ashtead Village News. AGM and Proposed Change to Constitution The Covid-19 restrictions in place during 2020, led the Association’s committee to at first postpone and then cancel the 2020 AGM, publishing the Chairman’s Report and the 2019 Accounts online and leaving Officers in place until 2021. The Association’s constitution needs to be amended to allow for this kind of situation and, although this is after the fact, it is proposed to add a sub-clause (a) to Clause 15 as below: 15. The Annual General Meeting, at which the formal business of the Association shall be conducted, shall be held before the end of April in each year at such place and time as may be decided by the Committee. At least one other ordinary general meeting of the Association shall be held, but extra meetings may be held if the Committee deem it necessary. At least twenty-eight days’ notice shall be given of all ordinary meetings. Proposed sub-clause: a) Should extraordinary circumstances prevent it being held before the end of April, the Standing Committee, deciding by majority vote, may postpone or cancel the AGM providing that: (i) as much notice as possible is given by posting notices on the Association’s boards, on its website and through social media; (ii) the Chairman’s Report and Annual Accounts are published on the Association’s website; and (iii) Officers remain in post until elections can be held at the rescheduled AGM or at the next ordinary meeting of the Association, whichever is the earlier. 10 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - MARCH 2021
Despite the successful roll-out of the Covid-19 vaccination, it’s unlikely that we will be able to hold an in-person meeting in the first half of this year, so the Committee has opted instead to hold a virtual AGM via Zoom. The exact date has not yet been decided but we will publish the meeting details online as soon as we know them and also include them in the spring issue of Ashtead Village News (AVN). Publication of the AVN is itself being delayed until April this year in the hope that by then lockdown restrictions that prevent Road Stewards delivering the newsletter will have been lifted. Annual Ashtead Spring Clean - Regular Spring Clean volunteers will remember that the 2020 event was cancelled as it was due to take place just as the March lockdown began. We are hoping that lifting of the current very strict lockdown laws will allow us to hold the event on April 17th this year. If we find that we can go ahead, we will publish full details of the event next month and online. Future Mole Valley - Local Plan - Although Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) is maintaining confidentiality on the content of the next draft of the Local Plan, we have been assured that the comments submitted during last year’s Spring consultation have been taken very seriously and changes to the Plan will be made. We have no idea if they are changes that will reassure Ashtead residents about proposed local development but we will continue to make Ashtead’s case if this proves necessary. New ARA Website - Some of you may already have seen our newly redesigned website but, if you haven’t, do visit it and check out its new look www.ashteadresidents.org.uk. Glynis Peterkin - Chairman
Lucy of Buy to Let Hunter interviews a local entrepreneur Buy To Let Hunter is a fresh approach to property purchase – we recently sat down with one of our early investors to catch up with him:
Raffi is a local business owner doing a great thing for the world - he arrived in Richmond with enough money for just 8 months. He followed a hunch and set up Bantam Materials - providing Prevented Ocean Plastic, recycling and collecting from at-risk coastal communities and creating a research centre on the Richmond Green – we think he is marvellous, and we are not the only ones! He just won: “Sustainable Initiative of The Year”. Whoop! Raffi realised that he wanted to invest in property but preferred a professionally managed structure run by trustworthy people to allow him the freedom to focus on the craziness in his own world. Raffi approached us and asked us to help. Through Buy To Let Hunter, Raffi has purchased a pure investment property and a holiday home which he uses in conjunction with renting it out to paying guests.
his lifestyle greatly. He has a free holiday home that pays for itself, in fact it pays Raffi just to own it!! Raffi says: “My kids have a pool, access to nature, the cottage overlooks a lake… And it’s just an hour and a half from London.” “It’s absolutely no hassle.... The team at BTLH do absolutely everything, checking in guests, housekeeping, making sure everything is perfect for my family and visitors. I just turn up. Oh, and cash the cheques! In fact it makes me a Gross yield 12% - £52,000 annually” “And I had no doubt I could trust Adrian after I met him. The single biggest thing is that my interests were ahead of their company profit. So, I feel I can really trust the advice.” We do love a happy punter! Raffi says: “For me there wasn’t a second choice when I met the Buy To Let Hunter team. It was about working with someone trustworthy and when speaking to one of the directors, a local guy, it was clear he was someone I could trust. I didn’t need to look any further. And my expectation has been more than met.” Obviously investing in anything is risky, but understanding that, Raffi feels he has enhanced Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - MARCH 2021

BUILDING A GREENHOUSE - If you are lucky enough to have a greenhouse in the garden you would probably like it to be bigger and better. And if you have a garden but no greenhouse, you would probably like to build one. Well - that’s exactly what a partnership, centred around Fetcham Scouts and St Mary’s Church, is doing. The building will have plenty of glass (hence the name The Greenhouse) but instead of plants, the focus will be on meeting the needs of our community. Young, old, and everyone in between. Occupying a section of the Cock Lane recreation ground, the Greenhouse is nothing less than the biggest community building project in Fetcham for several decades. Almost a million pounds, out of a £1.4m budget, has been raised so far, and just before Christmas Mole Valley District Council granted the all-important planning permission. As you might expect some legal matters have still to be ironed out, but the biggest hurdle now is to close the final funding gap. The project is one of many applying for a share of £100m of community funding recently made
available by Surrey County Council, known as Your Fund Surrey. The team is optimistic about its bid, and would like as much community support as possible. You can easily do this by Google searching for the Your Fund Surrey Map. This reveals an interactive map with a list of all the projects. Zoom in on Leatherhead and Fetcham, find the Cock Lane recreation ground. Click on the icon and please register a ‘like’ to show your support. The FRA is fully behind the project and we know that the project team will be grateful for all your ‘likes’. A dedicated website for the project will be launching soon. There’ll be more detail, including ways in which Fetcham residents can become involved. . SUBSCRIBE AND SUPPORT Our subscriptions become due on April 1st. If you are not already a member of the FRA, please consider supporting us. The easiest way to join or renew is to visit our website www.fetchamresidents.co.uk and follow the Membership link on the home page. Alternatively you can use the printed form below. Thank you.

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead Our Local Shops - do we value them enough? Part of our community. Community has come to the forefront in 2020 with support for local businesses and shops increasing as lockdown reduced our ability to travel. These local businesses have shown adaptability and enterprise in the face of the pandemic through on-line orders, take-way services and furthering their social media presence. They have brightened our streets with creative window displays and Christmas lights and we pay tribute to them. No less important are the professional services and trades that offer expertise and the supermarkets and chain stores that have also risen to the challenges of lockdown. All local businesses, organisations and associations create the ‘glue’ that bonds a community together. Creating sustainability. Ashtead and Leatherhead promote sustainability by valuing resources, providing opportunities for recycling and reusing. Charities offer recycling opportunities, hire services provide for occasional needs and businesses offer repair services. ‘Makedo and mend’ might sound like a war-time mantra but it’s good housekeeping to make the most of the resources we have. Our local independent shops provide services specifically tailored to our needs. Our food shops and Leatherhead’s street market are supplied from local growers, bringing us fresh, quality produce. Unnecessary packaging is generally avoided in these shops and there are increasing alternatives to plastic packaging, including refill services. The high street or shopping parade forms the heart of any community, providing its identity. Independent retailers give character and flair to our shops, offering friendship and recognition, an antidote to ’clone towns’ where chain stores dominate. The challenges. A major change in the way we shop today is the move to online shopping. A report from the Centre for Retail Research in 2018, highlighted the growth of online in the last decade. Back in 2008, it was responsible for just 7.7% of sales, rising to 17.8% in 2018 and still increasing. However, people look to the high street for personal and professional services, face-to-face advice and unique experiences. Consumers are also increasingly looking for choice and individuality with the growth of craft or artisanal products available in independent stores. Resilience after Covid and Brexit. Many people buy locally because they want to stay close to home and believe it is better for the environment. Importantly in 2021, local businesses can aid resilience in ensuring that the wealth generated is redistributed in the neighbourhood and not leaked out elsewhere. Independent shops respond quickly to local needs, as they have short, local supply chains and they can diversify more rapidly. Check out the range of products and services on offer on-line and in-store in your locality. High streets are also places for human contact. They are not just where the butcher, baker and chemist are found, but where people meet and ideas are shared. Right now, more than anything, we are all looking forward to meeting up with a friend for a cuppa or a pint soon! Mole Valley Arts Alive Festival Shortlisted for Hearts For The Arts Awards 2021 The shortlist has been announced for the National Campaign for the Arts’ (NCA) Hearts For The Arts Awards 2021, a celebration of those in local authorities who are championing the arts against all odds. such a success. By making sessions mainly free and online, we were able reach a wider audience and bring people closer at a time when we are all having to stay further apart. “Claudia really deserves this award, which recognises her tireless commitment to the numerous community arts projects she carries out for the Council throughout the year.”
Arts e-Live has been nominated for Best Arts Project, and Mole Valley District Council’s (MVDC) Arts Development Officer Claudia Cartwright, who organises the festival along with the Arts Alive committee, has been nominated for Local Authority Arts Champion. Usually called Arts Alive, the festival was renamed in 2020 as for the first time in its 24-year history most events took place online. This year’s theme was Arts for Wellbeing, and TV presenter and journalist Lorraine Kelly CBE was the festival’s patron. There were 57 events for all ages throughout October in the fields of music, theatre, poetry, creative writing, children’s events, street art, craft, filmmaking and dance. This year’s Hearts For The Arts Awards winners will be selected from the shortlist by a judging panel of key arts industry experts and practitioners. Chairman of Arts Alive, Councillor Mary Huggins, said: “Arts Alive are thrilled to be shortlisted for this prestigious award. So many people – our volunteer committee, our council officers and our participants – have worked so hard in a very short time, amid challenging conditions, to achieve this wonderful festival.” MVDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Councillor David Draper said: “We’re incredibly proud of everyone who worked together to make Arts e-Live
22 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - MARCH 2021
Discussing Mole Valley’s nomination, Hearts for the Arts Award partners said about Arts e-Live: “We were impressed by the scale, ambition and diversity of the Arts e-Live programme and by the enthusiasm of the many submissions we had in support of the festival. The team were able to reach significant numbers of people both locally and beyond, who attended events across a broad range of art forms and audiences. It provided social connection to many locally during lockdown to tackle isolation and loneliness and to offer activities for every age group.” “Claudia Cartwright has enabled people of all different backgrounds to come together to make art a great thing. It’s clear that she is a real people person, able to take people with her, encouraging those new to the arts to get involved.” Claudia said: “I’m thrilled to make the shortlist for these awards, and would like to thank all my colleagues at MVDC who have supported me to provide high quality art experiences for all in our beautiful district. Thank you.” The winners of the Hearts for the Arts Awards 2021 will be announced on Valentine’s Day, 14 February. As the Covid 19 pandemic continues we are witnessing grief and loss on a national scale not experienced in our lifetimes. Over 100,000 people have now died with Covid. Many thousands more have died of other causes in the last year too. Each loss leaves family, friends and colleagues devastated. Some have not been able to say goodbye to a loved one. Many have not been able to attend funerals and the first days, weeks and months of mourning have been in isolation for many more. No hand holding, no hugs, no dropping by for a cup of tea. Recent findings from an ongoing study by researchers at Cardiff University and the University of Bristol* confirmed 67 per cent were unable to say goodbye to their loved one as they would have liked, 81 per cent had limited contact with other close relatives or friends and 67 per cent experienced social isolation and loneliness. Our traditional paths of grief have been stopped in their tracks by the pandemic. But social distancing must not stop us sharing our grief. At The Good Grief Trust our mission is to ensure instant and easy access to support for those struggling with a loss, and from day one let every person grieving know they are not alone. Former Grange Hill actress, Linda Magistris, founded the Trust in 2016 after the death of her partner Graham. She explained: “When Graham died, I just didn’t know where to turn and nobody seemed to acknowledge or 26 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - MARCH 2021
understand my grief. I simply was not signposted to the support I needed.” Run by the bereaved, for the bereaved, we have over 800 local, national and bespoke bereavement support services listed on our website. We offer ‘Hope and Help in one place’ and in recognition of this, our emblem is the umbrella. Connection is vital. To help plug the gaps in support across the UK, we host regular community Pop-Up Good Grief Cafes to bring the bereaved together. These cafes are now running virtually, and attendance has increased 70% since the pandemic began. In addition to immediate signposting via the website, we are distributing hundreds of thousands of our Good Grief condolence and signposting cards to front line services to direct the bereaved to immediate help. Our work is more crucial than ever now. National bereavement support services have been disrupted. There are long waiting lists and a one-size fits all approach to grief does not work. Often information does not reach those grieving alone at home. *University researchers found that half of those who lost a loved one during the pandemic were not provided with any information about bereavement support, and more than half (56%) of people who tried to access bereavement services reported experiencing difficulties. Grief can be complicated but access to support never should be. Please support our work, and the bereaved by visiting our online shop at www.goodgrieftrust.org/

mole valley W.I. february report On a very cold February night members of Mole Valley gathered once again on Zoom to celebrate our 56th birthday. No lovely birthday cake this time but something to look forward to when we are able to meet in our village hall. Voting for resolutions had closed and we were advised that our vote was for the call for the awareness of ovarian cancer. Fitting for a birthday meeting we were then entertained by Carol and Steve otherwise known as Fools Gold. Steve and Carol first sang in a folk music club in Carlisle. They realised that most songs have stories and mystery and their production for us was Dark Light The Flannan Island Mystery. They sang, played many different instruments and talked us through this particular story using wonderful backdrops. They encouraged us to interact with them and participate in a quiz to win a jar of absolutely nothing in any flavour! In December 1900 a ship on route from USA to Leith safely arrived despite a huge storm and reported that the Flannan lighthouse was not lit. Investigation revealed that the three lighthouse men had disappeared it was thought about a week before. So the mystery? What happened to the men? This mystery is still talked about today and there are, of course, several explanations from Aliens to murder. June Webb

Gold in South America had a spiritual importance and their goldsmiths made some of the most spectacular treasures of the ancient world. Europeans, by contrast, saw gold as the ultimate symbol of wealth and for decades they searched in vain for El Dorado.
THURSDAY 25 MARCH 2021 AT 11.00AM
We are excited to be taking a virtual walking tour of Venice conducted by Luisella Romeo, a registered tour guide for the city of Venice. This year sees the 1600th Anniversary of the
founding of Venice, so it is a special year to be exploring some of the sights and learning about some of the City’s colourful history. Guests are welcome - if you would like to attend this talk, please contact Huw by email on theartssocietyleatherhead@gmail.com
ASHTEAD
Visit our website www.tas-ashtead.org.uk for details of our lectures, visits, and tours.
Let’s hope that 2021 will see a return to something approaching normality. We are a thriving society with a membership of 300, providing stimulating arts-related talks, visits to places of interest, and cultural tours (this year to Berlin and to Krakow) and special events. Normally our talks have taken place on the 3rd Tuesday morning of each month at the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall, but that has not been possible in the present circumstances. Throughout this period we have been keeping in touch with our members through regular newsletters, by email or hand-delivery for those without that facility. Since July, using the Zoom app, we have been screening monthly online talks, as well as providing access to some “virtual tours“ of places of interest. These were enjoyed by many of our members on-screen in the comfort of their own homes. Immerse yourself in the cultural heritage of Vienna, as our online talk on Tuesday 16th March 2021 (at 10.30) will be:
The Two Gustavs: Klimt and Mahler We welcome visitors and new members, who, for a fee of £5, can join in an online talk by sending a request by email to tas.ashtead@gmail.com.

Mole Valley Probus Club latest charity donation...
Claire Woodward, Head of Community Partnerships and Events Team, Princess Alice Hospice.
Michael Brown, chairman Mole Valley Probus Club.
Mole Valley Probus is a club of retired professional and business men and women with some 70 members. Most of their usual social activities are now denied them, apart from their monthly meetings with a speaker, which, as they cannot meet in person, are held remotely over their computers. But something they can still do is to support local charities. The club’s latest charity donation, the last for a while to let club funds catch their breath, is to the invaluable Princess Alice Hospice, the closest hospice for many in Mole Valley. In recognition of their service to the community Mole Valley Probus Club chose the hospice for its latest donation. As the club’s chairman, Michael Brown, said “The Princess Alice Hospice is a charity that supports our community. We are delighted to support them.” For the club’s website see molevalleyprobus.btck.co.uk and for the hospice pah.org.uk

CHRISTMAS 2020
Despite Covid 19 restrictions, I am proud of the things we achieved in the lead up to Christmas 2020. We attended 6 Static collection sites and, in some instances, even with Santa, to the joy of some of the children. A huge THANK YOU goes to the residents of Ashtead, Bookham, Dorking and Leatherhead
for their generosity. We raised over £3,000.00! £1,000.00 of which has been donated to Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance. The balance will go to support local charities or individuals in need of support. We are also very proud to support The Meeting Room in Leatherhead & Fetcham, who provided & delivered Christmas Dinner to some 60-local people in need of support on Christmas Day. We were able to compliment this by providing 60 bags containing Fruit, Chocolates, Drinks, Crisps, Mince Pies & Custard. Surrey Carers asked if we could make this young man’s Christmas special: Timi has Downs Syndrome and a heart condition which means it is important for his health to stay active and riding a Trike is something he really enjoys. We provided the funds to buy the Trike and Timi received it just in time for Christmas. Mum Esther said “Timi loves being outdoors…..his infectious smile and joy keeps me motivated also”. In these difficult times it is important for all of us to remain active and motivated. If you think you can help and put something back into the Community,

GARDENING FOR WILDLIFE - thoughts for 2021
Gardening is a pastime which helps keep us fit and healthy. Wildlife gardening additionally lets us enjoy and connect to nature, bringing with it a host of benefits including a sense of wellbeing and improved mental resilience; a perfect antidote to the events of the last year.
• Put in some ground cover plants and allow some grass to grow long for shelter and insects to lay eggs. You could plug plant the grass with wildflowers too. For wildflower seeds, you need to plant on bare soil, so they’re best going in a bed.
You can encourage wildlife without compromising the way your garden looks; gardening for wildlife needn’t mean leaving an untidy mess. Small changes to your garden can bring major benefits for the creatures that call it home and bring in more wildlife for you to watch.
• Provide water for wildlife to drink and bathe - in a bird bath or in a pond. You can even do a pond in a bucket or barrel. Make sure there is an escape route for creatures which fall in!
We have been gardening for wildlife since we moved here and hope we’ve achieved something that looks good and provides colour throughout most of the year whilst providing cover, protection, habitat and food sources for wildlife. Come and see for yourself on Sunday 27th June when we open for Bookham Open Gardens. As spring approaches, it’s time to think about new projects and how best to manage the garden this year. Some suggestions are • Plant some pollinator friendly plants - look for the Plants for Pollinators or Perfect for Pollinators logo and consider planting some berry shrubs as a winter food source. 42 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - MARCH 2021
• Make a pile of dead wood, logs, stones for shelter.
• Put up bird and bat boxes and build a bug hotel. • Build a hedgehog home and provide gaps at the base of fences for them to travel between gardens. • Put in a water butt to conserve water, buy peat-free compost or better still make your own. • Try and avoid weed killers, insecticides and nasty slug pellets • Consider letting your front verge grow and see if wildflowers come up. Put up a Blue Heart! Then just sit back and enjoy it! In 2020 we loved sitting and watching the visiting wildlife, dragonflies and newts hatching from our pond and the insects busily pollinating our plants. THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
FREDERICA LOCK Local historian WILLIAM WHITMAN told the story of Frederica Lock of Norbury at a recent online lecture. One William Lock had inherited a fortune and married Frederica Schaub in 1767 in Marylebone. He was 35, she was 17. Her Swiss father had worked for the German-speaking King George I as a translator. The Locks built a house in Portman Square, lived in Italy and returned to England in 1775. They had six children in all. Lock had bought the park at Norbury in 1774 and built a house overlooking the River Mole and Box Hill. It was known for its drawing room with frescoes, unique in England. About 1780 Lock lost £20,000 from a failed loan and the family moved permanently to Norbury. In 1784 Frederica first met the novelist Fanny Burney in London. Fanny wrote: “The sweet and most bewitching Mrs Lock called upon me in the evening with her son George. She does truly interest both head and heart...she was so kind, so caressing, so soft; pressed me so much to fix a time for going to Norbury. What a charm London has lost for me by her departure, sweet creature that she is, born and bred to dispense pleasure and delight to all who know her.” When later staying at Norbury she wrote: “Our mornings if fine are to ourselves as Mr Lock rides out. We have two books in public reading: Mme De Sevigny’s letters and Cook’s last voyage. Mrs Lock reads the French, myself the English. Our conversations too, are such as I could almost wish to last forever.” In 1786 Fanny became assistant Wardrobe Mistress to the Queen. Frederica wrote to her daily at Windsor. In 1792 a colony of French aristocratic exiles came to Juniper Hall and the Locks welcomed them all to Norbury. General D’Arblay joined them later. He had been commander of the Guard when King Louis 46 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - MARCH 2021
XVI escaped from the Louvre. He and Fanny wrote to each other to practise their respective languages. In February 1793, Fanny wrote: “d’Arblay is one of the most delightful characters I ever met, for openness, probity, intellectual knowledge and unhackneyed manners.” He had little money but Frederica told Fanny: “Mr Lock is of the opinion that £100/year might ‘do’ as it does for many a curate.” They were married in Mickleham in 1793 with the Locks present. The newly-weds built a house in Westhumble, funded by Fanny’s third novel on land given by Mr Lock. In 1795 a neighbour wrote: “Mr Lock is esteemed one of the most perfect characters living; his lady’s outward form and amiable disposition are truly angelic.” The Locks’ son Charles became consul to the Kingdom of Naples while Nelson was recuperating there after the Battle of the Nile in 1798. Charles wrote of Nelson’s mistress, Emma Hamilton: “The extravagant love has made him the laughing stock of the whole fleet.” He and Nelson fell out and Charles was being reassigned to Egypt when he died of fever at Malta. Another tragedy came in 1806 when a carriage overturned at the Swan Hotel in Leatherhead on the way to visit Frederica. The Princess of Wales was inside and survived but a companion, Miss Harriet Cholmondeley, was killed. Frederica left Norbury after her husband died in1812. Her eldest son sold the estate after buying back the home the d’Arblays had built, for less than the building cost. For more information on the L&DLHS go to www.leatherheadhistory.org.

Get Ready For A Garden “Getaway” With overseas travel an unlikely prospect for many of us this year, why not make the most of a garden staycation by taking inspiration from your favourite holiday hotspots. Treat sunny spaces to tropical touches with lush green plants and bold flowering blooms, while low maintenance bamboos, cordylines, ferns and grasses will add texture to shadier areas.
Use different evergreen varieties to introduce interesting form and foliage and darken your fences with black or grey paint to make your planting really pop! Keep the contrast going and perk up your patio with colourful pots and containers - they’re really effective on steps and walls too. No need to splash out on new furniture. Upcycle existing pieces with woodstain or a new coat of paint and add brightly patterned cushions or throws that complement your planting for an instant update. Why not give some of your indoor plants a mini-break too? Many houseplants enjoy a spell outdoors in warmer weather - like us they look healthier after fresh air and a bit of extra light - but keep them out of full sun and take them back indoors when the evenings turn cooler. Break up larger spaces with shrubs or trellis and create cosy evening seating areas with solar powered lighting, lanterns and candles. Add a summer soundtrack and your favourite cocktail for vacation vibes and let the gentle trickle of a solar powered water feature transport you to your very own tropical paradise!

s pinach, courgette & leek tart This rustic tart makes a delicious lunch or dinner, and there’s no pastry-making or rolling involved. Try topping with other vegetables you enjoy the second time round.
ingredients 8 tsp olive oil 2 medium leeks (about 300g), trimmed and sliced 260g pack essential Waitrose Spinach 2 courgettes (about 300g), trimmed and sliced 3 garlic cloves, crushed 175g ricotta 1 egg 1 lemon, zest ¼ nutmeg, finely grated 4 sheets filo pastry (Serves 4)
method 1. Preheat the oven to 200˚C, gas mark 6. Heat 1 tsp oil in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Fry the leeks gently for 5 minutes until wilted but still bright green; tip into a bowl. Fry the spinach in another 1 tsp oil for 2-3 minutes until wilted; tip into a sieve and leave to drain over the sink. 2. Turn up the heat below the pan; fry the courgettes in 1 tsp oil for 2-3 minutes. Add the garlic; fry for 2-3 minutes more until golden all over. Meanwhile, use the back of a spoon to press as much water as possible out of the spinach in the sieve, then tip onto kitchen paper and squeeze dry. Beat the ricotta, egg, lemon zest and nutmeg in a large mixing bowl. Tip in all of the vegetables, mix together and season. 3. Line a large, flat baking sheet with parchment. Lay a sheet of filo on top and brush all over with a little oil. Layer up the other 3 sheets, brushing with oil in between. Spread the spinach ricotta mix on top, leaving a 5cm border all around. Fold up the edges, crinkling them slightly, and give them a final brush of oil. Bake for 20-25 minutes; cool slightly and serve.
cooking tip To give the tart an extra kick of flavour, add ½ tsp chilli flakes to the ricotta mixture, if liked.

Book Reviews MARCH 2021
‘Exit’ by Belinda Bauer (Hardback £14.99) 75 year old Felix Pink is a courteous widower who lives in Devon and belongs to a secret group of people who facilitate the suicides of the terminally ill. When an assignment goes wrong, Felix, now a murder suspect, tries to find out whether he is at fault or whether he has been set up. He flees the scene to save his dog Mabel who is locked in at home; meanwhile PC Calvin Bridge, relieved to be doing small town easy policing, is dragooned by his boss into finding some answers. The process proves to be a new lease of life for both Felix and PC Calvin Bridge. This intriguing, tender, funny and sometimes farcical novel about life, death and romance is a sheer joy and a delight to read.
‘To the End of the World: Travels with Oscar Wilde’ by Rupert Everett (Hardback £20.00) Rupert Everett’s film The Happy Prince, following Oscar Wilde’s last years in exile after his imprisonment, is tender and beautiful. Getting it made was less so, and Everett is a master at describing misfortune, mis-matched colleagues and his own failings. He combines deliciously catty gossip with honest self-appraisal of his descending star and an artist’s eye for detail. Everett’s elegant writing and his thoughtful observation of the world and his place in it makes this book, his third, a moving, wise and often funny read.
‘Light Perpetual’ by Francis Spufford (Hardback £16.99) Having loved his first novel I was delighted to read this fascinating, intricate story. South London in November 1944 was hit by V2 rockets, Hitler’s last gasp attempts to turn the war in his favour. In one incident 168 people were annihilated, lost in a direct impact on a branch of Woolworths. What if they survived, where would life have taken them? In this tale the possible lives of 5 children are interwoven over 15 year intervals. Twins Jo and Valerie, Alec, Ben and Vernon follow different but connected paths through vividly recreated historical events. I thoroughly enjoyed reading their stories. 52 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - MARCH 2021
