Easter is just around the corner and I hope like me, you are all looking forward to some time out to relax and be with some of your favourite people. The school holidays will also be with us in a week or so. How the year is flying by already! There are, of course, plenty of things happening locally this month aside from an excuse to eat lots of chocolate! Our What’s on pages have been filling up fast this past month and coupled with the longer days, it feels good to be stepping towards the warmer months. As well as these local events, 9th April is National Unicorn Day, and on a more serious note, Earth Day is on 22nd April, which has been given added emphasis by recent events and media attention on climate change. The organisers are providing lots of information and free resources for young and old alike who want to become more involved in this vital subject (www.earthday.org). Of course, I must mention the wider world this month, I’m sure you will join me as I send my love and thoughts to the brave people of Ukraine; this world news is certainly hard to digest, as we also consider the wider consequences of this awful war. We must all be grateful that we are for now safe and offer help in any way we are able to. Please do take a look at page 58 for one way we can assist the people of Ukraine. Closer to home, I hope you enjoy reading about a wonderful new book shop which has recently opened in Ashtead Village, we also include news from the Ashtead Commons people and news about a lovely RSPB walk! Many local groups and organisations are opening their doors this month so do take a look and see what takes your fancy! Whatever the Easter break has in store for you, I hope you and your family have a lovely time. With Best Regards,

ANNUAL ASHTEAD SPRING CLEAN LITTER PICK The Litter Pick NEEDS YOU! The Ashtead Residents’ Association is inviting you and your family to volunteer your services for 1 hour only on Saturday 2nd April to be part of our Annual Spring Clean Litter Pick. The litter pick itself will begin at 10am and finish at 11am but please see below for meeting times prior to the start. Please come along to one of the 7 meeting points listed below where you will be greeted by a member of the ARA standing committee. Strong shoes and protective gloves are recommended. We provide yellow vests and litter pickers for adults. We would love your children to get involved too, but only under your supervision, although we do not provide pickers or vests for them. Registration times are below and allow time for us to welcome you, give a safety briefing, ask you to sign a safety disclaimer form and give you your vest, if needed, a litter picker and a black bin bag. Once all the bags have been returned to the meetings points, they are collected and taken to the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall car park for collection by MVDC. If you find larger items dumped on the street, please make a note of their location so that they can be collected for delivery to the car park. If you are unable to join us at one of the meeting points, you may like to tidy up your own road, or immediate area, – for example, by cleaning street signs, tidying overhanging shrubs (please first obtain the owner’s permission) and clearing any litter. You may want to offer help to an elderly or disabled neighbour. If you decide that this option suits you better, please let us know at springclean@ ashteadresidents.org.uk, so that we don’t duplicate effort. 12 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - APRIL 2022

FETCHAM RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION FOR ALL COMMUNITY, INFORMATION, HELP AND SUPPORT VISIT: WWW.FETCHAMRESIDENTS.CO.UK EMAIL: CHAIRMAN@FETCHAMRESIDENTS.CO.UK TREES NEED FRIENDS Storm Eunice kept most of us inside for the day, but it wasn’t a good day either for many of our trees. Quite a few didn’t survive the storm. It reminds us that our stock of neighbourhood trees needs monitoring, and sometimes trees need replacing. In recent years we haven’t been planting enough saplings to keep up with the losses. The good news is that under Surrey County Council’s Climate Change Strategy there’s a target to plant 1.2 million trees (one for every resident) by 2030. The County has a newly appointed Highways Environmental Officer (Arboriculture Team) whose remit is to get the trees in the ground. This is a welcome change, as many past applications for new street trees were refused, mainly because of underground pipes. But the regulations are now being reviewed and some applications for Fetcham may be revisited, so we’re hopeful more trees will be planted. However, we need your help! Currently, we do not have any tree wardens in Fetcham, and the village could do with at least two.
Whether you want to get your hands in the earth, raise awareness about trees in your locality, or simply be the eyes, ears and voice for the trees in your road, you have what it takes to be a Tree Warden. No training or experience is needed - just a love of trees and a few hours to spare. Please email the FRA at info@fetchamresidents.co.uk if you would like to know more. There’s also more info at treecouncil.org.uk/take-action/treewardens/
FETCHAM CHAMPION Last month we remembered and celebrated the life of Ed Tims, one of the FRA’s past chairman at his funeral at St Mary’s Church. He was a remarkable man who was first of all Secretary, and then Chairman of the FRA from the late 1960s until 2008. He had a passion for the village and the wider area, and was also an active member of the Leatherhead and District Local History Society. He was 94 and we salute his service to us over so many years. A reminder that subs are due on April 1st. Caroline Cardew-Smith and Ian Anderson

The word on the street is ‘There’s a fabulous new store in Ashtead’
The arrival of a great new shop marks a new chapter for Ashtead Village; a brand-new independent bookshop has opened its doors! ‘Word on the Street’ established by local Ashtead residents, provides the village with its first bookstore in living memory. It is a general bookshop offering beautiful books from the latest best sellers and new releases, to dedicated sections on fiction, crime & thriller, biography, memories, science fiction, art & culture, history & politics, nature, travel, humour, sport, poetry, food & drink and mind, body & spirit. Based at 60 The Street, Ashtead, the store also has an impressive children’s section, with a mixture of children’s fiction and non-fiction. In addition to this, a selection of teenage/ young adult titles are also available. The store aims to sell a broad, diverse and inclusive selection of titles and welcomes all to provide reviews on books they have read. The idea for the bookshop has developed over a number of years where a small group of local people have contemplated the prospect of a bookshop in Ashtead Village and the opportunity arose during the recent lockdown when the property at 60 The Street
became available. One of the Directors, Dawn Brewer, who has been an Ashtead resident for 29 years, has subsequently worked closely with a group of like-minded local ‘bookworms’ to design and build the bookshop, with the aim of making it a community asset that will encourage reading and provide immediate access to a range of fiction and non-fiction books. To mark the launch, the new store worked with local primary schools to engage pupils and encourage their reading - infant school children designed bookmarks and children from years 3-6 wrote book reviews of their favourite books for a competition. Winners’ materials will be displayed in store. As well as an extensive range of books the store also provides greeting cards, notebooks and wrapping paper. Word on the Street is open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm. To find out more please visit the store at 60 The Street, call 01372 273932 or email hello@wordonthestreetbookshop.co.uk. Scams, scams and more scams We heard a worrying statistic that over £3.34billion was stolen in UK scams last year. Yes £9.2m per day, £381,278 per hour or £6,354 per minute- just think about that for a moment... It is not surprising that almost every day we hear of a new scam purporting to be from one of the big tech companies like BT, Microsoft, Amazon, Virgin Media to name but a few, there is also an emerging cluster of delivery companies and government bodies like the tax man, who all apparently want to resolve the problem you didn’t know you had. The motive of the scammer is always the same - to gain access to your bank account, and/or your credit card details. Their approach appears to be consistent - they have detected a “problem” with your internet connection or, computer/ parcel delivery/ tax refund and you can help them confirm the problem, then they can solve the issue. Our advice at this point is to interrupt the scammer and suggest you will investigate the problem yourself. In some cases the caller will become quite persistent that they will resolve the problem for you, but you need to remain resolute and say you will investigate the problem yourself and hang up the phone. NEVER allow them to connect to your computer, Mac, tablet or smartphone. Because of the way the phone system works, there is a possibility that if you picked up your telephone receiver shortly after stopping the scammers call, they may still be connected to your line, to overcome this we would advise you to not use your phone for the next 10 minutes- this will force the line to disconnect from the last call, then you can make an outgoing call. Should you feel concerned about the problem you have been alerted to and wish to pursue the matter, firstly ask yourself: • Why would XXX (lets say Virgin Media) be calling me? • Do you have a Virgin Media service? • Would they have your phone number? (It is very unlikely that Microsoft would know it) Below we have listed below some useful contact numbers of the legitimate companies who supposedly has just called you, so that you can check the calls authenticity yourself. If the scammer has connected to your machine they may have installed some software which will enable them to access and control your computer without your permission, also we have seen some scammers install malicious software which will delete your data in 7/14/21 days after the hack. Should you have any concerns we can ensure your computer is free from any unwanted software. The government have setup a website on this subject which is https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/. Should you have any ongoing concerns please feel free to call or drop into the store for further information.

Local RSPB Group D O R K I N G A N D D I ST R I C T
Credit: Sheryl John
The local RSPB group for this area is Dorking and District, which covers the whole of the Mole Valley area and is a friendly group that provides members with a range of bird watching walks and relevant talks. The group is made up of a range of interests, experienced bird watchers, beginners, keen photographers, some are interested in birds, but we have people interested in animals, butterflies, trees and wildflowers. This makes for interesting discussions and everyone enjoys the social aspects as well as being out in the fresh airs and enjoying nature. This month we had a weekend walk to RSPB Pulborough reserve, where one of our members took the photographs for this article. It was cold but brilliantly sunny and we saw a wide range of ducks, waders and birds of prey including red kite, buzzard and a couple of marsh harriers. There was a good range of smaller birds to, and we enjoyed a goldcrest, bullfinch, great spotted woodpecker and a song thrush. We had 22 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - APRIL 2022
lunch in a bird hide and a welcome cup of tea back at the visitor’s centre. A very successful day. Our programme of events is published in our Newsletter (published three times a year) and is made available on our website (search on Dorking and District RSPB local group) or on Facebook (RSPB DORKING). We plan: • A weekend walk to Oar Marshes in April and to Woodsmill nature reserve in May • Mid-week walks (usually on Wednesday Morning) in April to Tice’s meadow, the London WWT centre and to Knepp Estate in May. There are a variety of walks and talks planned for the whole year ahead and membership is only £15 for an individual for the year, with any surplus being donated to the RSPB to support reserves and their great work. Ashtead Common National Nature Reserve
Why does the City of London Corporation own Ashtead Common? A question frequently asked with bemusement and sometimes suspicion. Some fear the worst, a sinister plot to build houses and tower blocks perhaps. The real reason links 19th century foresight to recent events, reinforcing the realisation that a healthy City needs protected green space for the health of its inhabitants and workers. The City Corporation’s move to protect fast disappearing open space in the late 1800s continues to pay dividends, in fact more now than ever in the face of interlinked climate, biodiversity and health crises. Although acquired by the City in 1991, Ashtead Common is protected forever as accessible open space under legislation passed in 1878. It is an excellent example of a wood pasture – a landscape where woodland management and livestock grazing occurred in unison. The 24 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - APRIL 2022
resulting landscape - characterised by over 1,000 ancient oak pollards – is rich and diverse in wildlife. Ashtead Common’s latest management plan describes how the National Nature Reserve will be cared for and conserved over the next 10 years. The plan builds on recent successes that have seen the return of the grasshopper warbler and the nightingale, to detail how Ashtead Common will be managed to promote biodiversity and resilience. Much of the work to protect and maintain Ashtead Common is undertaken by the local community themselves, and over 450 people contributed to the development of the new plan. A group of volunteers has recently taken on the project to renovate the Sensory Garden within the grounds of The Grange at Bookham. The garden was originally created in 2011, around an existing rectangular pond. Raised beds were added along with wooden arches, a new pavilion, which is now used as a pottery studio, and lots of plants. Sensory gardens are planted with sight, sound, taste, smell and touch in mind. The original planting included heuchera and salvia, which stimulate the senses through the colour of their flowers and foliage; rosemary for its smell and taste, as its highly fragrant leaves can be used in cooking; lavender and honeysuckle for their wonderful scent, and stachys, with its lovely downy leaves that are soft to the touch. 10 years on and the garden has significantly matured, and many of the larger shrubs have outgrown their spaces. Sadly, the wooden arches have rotted and have had to be 32 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - APRIL 2022
removed. The new gardener has been busy and when the volunteers arrived for their first look at the project, new metal arches had replaced the wooden ones, and many of the climbing plants had been given a serious prune. The volunteer group got going early in January and have spent most of their time to date cutting back all the larger shrubs, pruning the roses, weeding all the beds, and trying to identify some of the plants which are starting to grow. The initial plan is to maintain the garden while the plants reveal themselves, and then add plants as the year progresses. There is plenty of room for additional planting and therefore the group is asking for donations of plants, and bulbs (which have finished flowering) which fit in with the sensory theme. Please contact Hilary at hrnicholls15@gmail.com if you have any suitable plants going spare at any point during the growing season.

HOME WANTED! Norman
Norman is a gorgeous 8 year old, Tabby and white male, who came into care through no fault of his own. Norman is a very intelligent cat and needs a lot of stimulation and space. He’s happy to be stroked but very much on his terms; he is a cat who likes his own way! He is looking for a very special home with the right owner who will accept him for who he is. He needs an adult-only home, a safe garden, no other pets and an experienced owner who will take the time to get to know Norman, to understand him and provide him with the stimulating environment he needs. In return he has a lovely character and will be excellent company. If you could give Norman his forever home please call 0345 260 1387 or email adoption@epsom.cats.org.uk or. mole valley W.I. march report On International Women’s Day our president, after welcoming us and two new members, asked us to think of the women in Ukraine who are enduring such terrible times. We were advised that we have a contact for taking necessary items by lorry and we could make donations that way. There were updates from some of our sub sections as some things have changed in the last two years. We are holding a Quiz night on 14th May and there are still spaces available. There will be an Autumn Bazaar on 8th October in Fetcham Village Hall. Our outings committee advised us of three outings. The Silent Pool gin distillery is this month, in April there will be a visit to two gardens and in June a visit to the Weald and Downland Museum so lots to look forward to. Our speaker Jenny Nockolds entertained and educated us on Volunteering with Elephants in Thailand. Jenny travelled to a remote small village where she spent a month helping the mahouts with the elephants. Elephants are a symbol of Royal Power and are revered. After the logging industry was banned in 1989 elephants became the tourist industry. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 12th April. Mole Valley W.I meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 7.45pm at Fetcham Village Hall and welcomes new members. Visit our website at www.molevalleywi.btck.co.uk

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead Why not Upcycle? We hate to throw anything away at home and love finding ways to repurpose them. We post unwanted things on Facebook (Marketplace or Ashtead Selling page), Ashtead Freebay or take to a charity shop. We enjoy other people benefiting from our ‘junk.’ However, if it fits perfectly somewhere, has family significance or we just love it, we turn to upcycling. We inherited a cabinet from my Grandma and Grandad. When we moved to Ashtead, we found a home for it but it never really fitted and when our little girl came along space became more precious. We posted it on Facebook market place for free. To our surprise we had a taker who collected it within hours. He said he would upcycle and either keep or sell it. I requested he send me a picture when he was finished as I would love to see it. As promised, he sent me one within 48hrs and it had been completely transformed. I was so taken aback and just couldn’t let it go as it was absolutely beautiful! We paid the gentleman a small amount of money for his time and materials and rehomed it as our TV stand – usefully high to keep above toddler range! It’s one of my favourite pieces of furniture and the fact it has that family history makes it so special. There are many other times where I have transformed things myself. I was given some drawers second hand with gold detailing which I never liked so I repainted the details and added new handles to make the drawers my own. I love looking at them knowing I did the work to upcycle them. Our garden furniture came from across the road with a label saying “free”. With a £15 tin of Hammerite paint I painted 90% of them leaving some sections as they were to bring that new and old look together. A set like this would cost at least £150 new. These now adorn our garden and we use them regularly. Finally, my husband is very happy with his ‘shed upcycling’. The shed was leaking, damp and cold. He installed a new roof, insulated it, added new walls, floor and shelving, painted inside and out. Now we have a home office and workshop. It only cost around 5-10% the price of an equivalent new building. So, upcycling can be fun, cost-effective, and great for the environment. Why not give it a go?

Book Reviews APRIL 2022 ‘Marrow Jam’ by Susan A. King (paperback £8.99) Marrow Jam is a comedy caper that will have you chuckling with glee. Beattie Bramshaw is a pillar of the community, maybe even a bit of a busybody but a murderer she is NOT. Doug Sparrow has won Best in Show a few too many times with his enormous marrows and Beattie means to stop him. This is why on one balmy night we find her and Phyllis, her reluctant sidekick, dressed in combat gear (black jumpers, tights, balaclavas and diving mask), creeping among the allotments with a plan to sabotage his marrows. However the best laid plans etc. and she ends up arrested and banged to order in the local police station in her combat gear. This is a murder mystery with a fabulous cast of characters and a good dose of light hearted humour. A perfect read. ‘Lily’ by Rose Tremain (hardback £18.99) A tale of revenge and redemption set in 1850’s London. Lily is abandoned as an infant by her mother at the gates of an East End park. She is saved by a passing Constable, Sam Trench, who is alerted to her presence by the howling of wolves. He brings her to the London Foundling Hospital and from there she is sent to a foster family in the countryside. Lily is returned to the Hospital after 6 years to be trained in a useful trade. Life was hard and the orphans were cruelly abused, a harsh change from her early years. A resourceful and determined character, Lily rises above her circumstances and becomes a successful wigmaker. It is while employed at Miss Belle Prettywood’s Wig Emporium that Lily commits the crime that changes her life. Over the years Sam Trench kept a watchful eye on her. They reconnect and Lily now fears that he will be the one to bring her to the gallows. This story is filled with hope, despair, love, and the admirable ability of some to prevail against all odds. ‘Unsettled Ground’ by Claire Fuller (paperback £8.99) Dot has kept her children from the world, living a hand to mouth existence. The novel opens by documenting in fine and gravely moving detail the last moments of her life on one snowy, cold morning in their isolated and rundown cottage. Julius and Jeannie wake up to a life complicated by a lifetime spent in seclusion without internet, television and bank accounts and ill equipped to make a living for themselves. Jeannie has tended a vegetable garden and they manage to feed themselves from that and £3.00 they have in the kitchen jar. Julius has odd jobs but all this comes crashing down when they are evicted and become homeless and a fabric of secrets constructed over a lifetime begins to unravel. While their isolated upbringing and inability to function in a modern world make it hard to empathize with them in the beginning, I became invested especially in Jeannie’s evolution from a timid shut-in person to formidable and sensitive fighter. 44 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - APRIL 2022

Potato Rosti with Poached Egg and Bacon For an egg-cellent Easter Treat try this brilliant sweet ‘n’ salty brunch
Preparation time: 15 mins
cooking time: 25-30 mins
Serves 6
INGREDIENTS: • 500g Maris Piper potatoes (King Edward also work well) • 250g parsnips • 50g butter • 3tbsp sunflower oil • 12 rashers smoked bacon • 2tbsp maple syrup • 6 free range eggs
INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Peel the potatoes, then coarsely grate them along with the parsnips, and squeeze out all the liquid (really important or you’ll get soggy mush rather than crispy rosti) 2. Season well and separate into size portions, then shape each portion into flat pancake shape, these are the rosti. 3. Heat the butter and oil in a pan and cook the rosti for 6-7 mins on each side until deep golden brown and crispy. Meanwhile, grill or oven cook the bacon for 20-25 minutes, until crisp and golden. Smoked bacon is sublime but unsmoked is good too. 4. A few minutes before the bacon and rosti are ready, bring a pan of water to a gentle simmer and poach the eggs. Top each rosti with 2 rashers of bacon and 1 poached egg. Serve with maple syrup.
Happy Easter.

LEATHERHEAD LIBRARY
Thank you to all our customers who completed the Surrey Library Survey. The results will help us plan the future of Surrey Libraries and improve our services. Malmi was very busy during half term week preparing craft packs for children to make bird feeders using old plastic bottles, sticks and string. They were hugely popular and only a £1 for the pack including bird seed. We may have a few left so ask at the desk next time you visit. We are thinking of running a knit and natter group. If you are interested, please pop in and leave your name and telephone number at the desk. Have you visited our children’s library recently? We have some radiant Easy Sudoku Puzzles byaKrazyDad, Volume Book additions to our ‘colouring in wall’. Do have look next time you 1, visit us. 21 We had a visit from some very colourful characters on World Book Day on Sudoku #2 3rd March, from princesses to Peppa Pigs to Supermen. All wonderfully 9 4 1 7 2 4 6 5 7 9 3 1 8 dressed up by some inventive parents. Prizes were won and librarians very entertained.
