Here’s hoping this season of cheer will be less restricted than last, and that we can look forward with a little more confidence and enthusiasm than last year! (#bookyourbooster!) There is certainly much more going on locally this time around, so proceed with caution and let’s just hope we can weather the storm, so to speak! Talking of storms, I’ve just spotted a weather forecast which predicts snow on 26th November! Very specific! Maybe by the time of reading this, you will know how accurate that was! Weather permitting, as I said, there is lots going on this month locally; we have a good selection of details for you to take a look at, many being festive events. Our centre pages give way to a packed and enticing selection. I do hope you find something that takes your fancy! As well as this, we include not one, but two really great competitions this month; our ever popular Cash Prize Draw, see details on page 57 and also a chance to win a really beautiful photography book ‘Surrey in Photographs’. It is stunning, and for any lover of Surrey, this would make a wonderful Christmas gift. See page 54 for this. Sadly as editor I can’t enter, but this book is firmly on my Christmas list. And there is more beautiful photography in the form of an exhibition too. Dorking Camera Club pull out all the stops at Denbies again this year. I’m very sure it will be well worth a visit. This club have a high number of hugely talented members and their work is inspiring. We are also happy to include a good selection of information and reports from local clubs and organisations, some book recommendations/reviews from Ashtead Library and so much more…. I truly hope there will be something for everyone in this busy December issue… I wish you all a Happy and Joyous Festive period, keep well and enjoy yourselves.
From all (3) of us to all (many) of you:
A Very Happy Christmas!

This month we caught up with Tracy & Simon, who recently saw their lovely two-bedroom property in Knaphill for the first time since their purchase was completed. BTLH had done the thing they do best and the house was looking smart and ready for some guest action. “Shall we move in?” they joked as they strolled through the door. Honestly, they would need to fight off the punters if they were serious, because we had so much interest on this smart, modern property before it was even listed, that we could have rented it four times over.
Why did you choose BTLH to find your investment property for you? “We were keen to outsource because we both have arduous jobs and work long hours – although we knew we wanted to invest in property, we also knew we wouldn’t be able to manage the process ourselves and were painfully aware that we could make mistakes. In short, we had the “investment will” but none of the expertise!” What were you hoping to achieve? “We see the house as being in lieu of Simon’s pension. Making an investment in property instead of shares we are aware that we might earn an annual surplus which would be all well and good but our priority is the longer term aim of owning a property which increases in value.” How have you found the process? “It has been very good overall –the initial phase was excellent, within two days we were looking at houses in general and Advertising feature
specifically this house. It was a no brainer.” “Adrian was very clear once we got in to the purchase there is a limit as to how much they can do to assist. We found then that we were chasing and working through things ourselves when it came to setting up the mortgage and arranging the transfer of the deeds for the purchase – but BTLH had great contacts for loans and solicitors. BTLH identified the perfect property within our budget and were very clear about how to proceed.”
What advice would you give? “Investing in stocks and shares can be rather sterile, investing in a property is a more emotional decision. We genuinely wanted to be involved in the process and already feel a connection with the house. That is exactly what we wanted, rather than be too remote or feel it was completely removed from us. Simon has always aspired to this sort of investment and felt the desire to do it at least once, and, frankly, we just didn’t know where to start. Going forward we now have a mixture of investments instead of being so limited. We look forward to maybe doing this all again!” Can BTLH help you find the perfect property? WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945
Christmas in Ashtead This time last year we were in a state of uncertainty as to whether Christmas could be celebrated with friends and family. Sadly, due to COVID restrictions, that was not to be and, although technology came to the fore as many families resorted to the various means of social media to communicate with each other, it was not the same. Twelve months on and, whilst not everything in the garden is rosy, it seems that Christmas will be back to normal and hopefully families from distant parts will be able to be together, many for the first time in nearly 2 years. We are delighted to report that the Christmas Shopping Night in The Street, organised by the Ashtead Traders, is back and will take place from 4pm to 8pm on Tuesday 7th December. This is an opportunity to be welcomed by the many businesses in Ashtead and for us in turn to thank them for the excellent service they have given us during the restrictions imposed by COVID. Please come along and enjoy a fun evening with fairground rides and Father Christmas for children, along with a variety of stall holders exhibiting their merchandise. Members of Rotary will be present, rattling tins for local charities that are urgently in need of our support. Please give generously to help those requiring assistance during the season of goodwill. To encourage local shopping in the lead up to Christmas, MVDC has announced that on the first 3 weekends of December, the 4th, 11th & 18th, parking will be completely free in any of the council car parks on both Saturday and Sunday. We are delighted to report that the 7th Epsom Scout Group will this year recommence their Christmas card delivery service to post codes KT17, KT18, KT19 and KT21. The first collection will be on 30th November and run through 10 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - DECEMBER 2021
to 16th December. Deliveries will start the following day. The cost is only 40p per card, a big saving compared with a second-class stamp. Simply bundle your envelopes together along with your payment, by either cheque or cash, and take them to one of the following collection points: • McColls Newsagent , The Street • M&S, The Street • Tesco Express, Craddocks Parade • Gary’s Greengrocer, Barnett Wood Lane • Various sites in The Ashley Centre, Epsom The service is a wonderful way of saving money and at the same time you will be supporting a worthy cause that is desperately in need of funds. In 2019, over 1,300 cards were posted in Ashtead alone, generating nearly £500. We know Ashtead can do better this year so please use the Scouts for all your local Christmas cards. Another Ashtead tradition is back this year. After a COVID-enforced break, The Woodfield Entertainers will be with us on stage this December with a fun packed pantomime. Aladdin will have four performances at the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall starting on Thursday 16th December through to Saturday 18th. Performances on Thursday and Friday start at 7.30pm & on Saturday at 1.30pm & 6.30pm. Tickets: £10 for adults & £5 for children, are available at the box office 07763-568973 or email woodfieldentertainers@yahoo.co.uk. After another difficult year, Ashtead Residents’ Association is most grateful for the continuing support it has received from its Road Stewards and members. Our Chairman and the Standing Committee would like to wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous and peaceful New Year, with the hope that better times are ahead in 2022. COME AND SING
When did you last sing out loud? Not just in the shower, but in public with plenty of others, all joining in to the sound of a well-loved tune. The answer is probably quite a long time ago. Well, on Friday December 3rd there’s a very welcome chance to put that right when singers and musicians from St Mary’s Church will lead us in the singing of Christmas Carols around the tree in Fetcham village centre. We will be turning on the Christmas lights, the Love Fetcham group will be handing out some chocolate to any passing children, and it all starts at 5pm. So do try and join us. But it doesn’t end there, as on Saturday December 4th from 12 to 2pm we have a brass band to entertain us outside Sainsbury’s. Twelve of our village shops have kindly taken up the ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ theme by decorating their windows with a verse from the famous carol. We’re hoping that this year our village lights will be truly memorable and give a real boost to our traders. The FRA is using some of its own funds, but we must also thank Mole Valley District
Council for its vital cash support.
HAVE YOUR SAY ON NORBURY
Many of you will know that following the closure of the Norbury Sawmill, Surrey County Council is having a rethink about not just the sawmill site, but the whole Norbury Park area. In mid-October the council published a ‘vision’ document and it is now inviting comments. It’s suggesting that the sawmill site becomes a ‘woodland hub’ with visitor toilets, and space for rural crafts and education. Proposals also include two new trails, one of them equipped with exercise installations. Further encouraging biodiversity is also on the agenda. The FRA welcomes the consultation, but we know that many existing users of the park will be concerned about the possibility of increased vehicle traffic to the sawmill along the bridleway from the Fetcham car park. You can find a link to the full document on the Surreysays.co.uk webpage under the item ‘Norbury Park Vision’. You have until November 29th to register your views and we strongly encourage you to do so. Ian Anderson

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead Happy Eco-Christmas! The best present you can give at Christmas is a sustainable future. Here are a few small things we can do to share that gift with each other. Presents: Last year people in the UK received 70 million unwanted Christmas gifts. Try doing Secret Santa with your family and friends. I write the names of guests on two bits of paper, do the ‘draw’ and let each person know their two people. Or how about gifting an experience which can be more memorable, but are, of course, not carbon emissions free. What about giving nice warm sweaters and turning the heating down! Food: Over Christmas, 2 million turkeys, 5 million Christmas puddings, and 74 million mince pies are thrown away while still edible. Choose quality rather than quantity – ask your local butcher for the provenance of their meat and try to buy sustainable, humanely-raised produce. Or maybe reduce the meat you eat, and try a tasty meat-free alternative. Planning meals reduces waste but it’s inevitable that there’ll be leftovers so try to use air-lock glass containers or beeswax-covered cloths (these also make lovely Eco presents) Decorations: if you want different tree decorations why not have a ‘swap’ with friends? Or look for recycled ones in charity shops. Look for FSC certification on wrapping paper. Avoid foil paper or ones with ‘sparkles’ as these are made of plastic and will add to the problem of plastic pollution. Or use what you have around the house such as previously-used wrapping, or brown paper, which can look quite chic. See if you can wrap presents in an inventive way to reduce the need for any tape, which is made of plastic. I cut up last year’s Christmas cards to make gift-tags and attach with wool. Christmas trees: A real tree can have a negligible carbon footprint if it’s grown locally, recycled or is kept growing in a pot or the garden. A 6.5ft artificial tree has a carbon footprint equivalent to about 40kg of greenhouse gas emissions, which is more than twice that of a real tree that ends its life in landfill. You need to keep an artificial tree for at least ten years to offset its carbon footprint although eventually it will end up in landfill. Use LED lights on your Christmas tree, they use less energy and look great! Also, switch off your tree lights at night, it’s safer and won’t cost the earth. Happy Eco-Christmas!

LEATHERHEAD LIONS
Project Wenceslas DO YOU RECEIVE FUEL ALLOWANCE AND DON’T NEED IT? WE KNOW SOMEONE WHO DOES. Project Wenceslas - as the line in the popular carol says - is about ‘gathering winter f-u-e-l’. Leatherhead Lions have been running the project since December, 2013. During this time, we have asked better-off pensioners who don’t need their winter fuel allowance to donate it. Their donations are placed in a ring-fenced account and every penny is then used to support those less fortunate and in fuel poverty or simply can’t put food on the table. Since its inception, we have helped over 200 households to keep the lights on and stay warm. We work very closely with the Citizens Advice Bureau in Leatherhead and Dorking and Christians Against Poverty in Bookham to identify the clients needing help. Often, it is serious illness that tips a family into difficulty. For example, we helped one family when the main breadwinner fell seriously ill and had to give up work and his partner also had to curtail work to care for him. From having two incomes, the family became dependent on benefits and fell into arrears. Our Wenceslas fund offered a life-line to pay off energy debts and keep them warm. Sometimes, it’s a breakdown in relationship that causes the problem. One lady needing help had to move into a safe house with her children to escape an abusive partner. Faced with the costs of setting up a new home alone and from scratch, she struggled to find money for the pre-payment meters that such accommodation 28 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - DECEMBER 2021
invariably comes with. A significant top-up on her prepayment meter cards helped to get her started. We are appealing for funds again this year, so if you don’t need your winter fuel allowance, why not donate it? (If you are a tax payer, gift-aid your donation to increase its value by 25%). Every penny donated will go to help families suffering with fuel poverty. And like all donations made to Lions, nothing is ever deducted for administration or expenses.
TO DONATE: Send a cheque to Wenceslas Appeal, Leatherhead Lions Club, 86 Newton Wood Road, Ashtead, KT21 1NW. Or visit our website www.leatherheadlions.org.uk and donate direct or download Gift Aid Form.

David Balaam, Dorking Camera Club’s 38 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - DECEMBER 2021
Chairman said: “When the pandemic hit and the nation went into lockdown we were forced to meet virtually. Club meetings were held on Zoom and our exhibition was held online. It is really great to be back displaying our work to the public in person at Denbies this year. We will also keep the exhibition online, so the public have the flexibility to view our club’s exhibition images via our website too. “It’s a stunning display which includes plenty of photographs shot locally. This year’s show promises something that’ll appeal to everyone. For those who see something that catches the eye, there’s the opportunity to buy a print. It’s the perfect opportunity to do some Christmas shopping and buy a memorable keepsake for someone special.” Dorking Camera Club annual photography exhibition is sponsored by chartered financial planners HJP.

Studying the correspondence of the founders of the National Trust, she told the story of a triumph in Surrey that set the scene for the NT’s foundation. Octavia Hill and Robert Hunter were both Londoners who came to live in Surrey. Robert Hunter lived in Haslemere. By 1883 when he first moved there he had already been active for many years as honorary solicitor for the Commons Preservation Society and would be knighted for his endeavours. Haslemere was considered a select place to live, referred to in advertisements as ‘the little Alps’. In 1894 Sir Robert Hunter was appointed chairman of the Haslemere parish council. On 5 May 1899 they received a letter calling attention to the ‘removal and destruction of hollies and other trees from the open spaces on Sir Robert Hunter Hindhead’. The council expressed a hope that Mr Whitaker Wright, Lord of the Manor, would prevent any further injury to an area of such value to the public. He was allowing gangs of 500 workmen with machinery to lift the hollies, along with large clumps of earth, to landscape his new dwelling nearby. From humble origins he had emigrated to America, lost a fortune, returned 44 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - DECEMBER 2021
to England and eight years later had become a millionaire, and acquired the manor of Witley, which included lordship of Hindhead Common and the Devil’s Punchbowl.
The Devil’s Punchbowl, Hindhead Common
Haslemere parish council tried to agree a lease of manorial rights to the Common but he was not interested. Then in 1900 he was denounced for misuse of invested funds. Awaiting trial for fraud in 1902 he tried to escape first to Paris and then New York but was extradited, tried in 1904, but killed himself after receiving a seven-year prison sentence. His property was auctioned with lot 47 ‘the manorial rights over Hindhead Commons, including Devil’s Punchbowl, Gibbet Hill etc. 750 acres timber included’. Sir Robert Hunter led a campaign to raise £4000 to buy it. The property would be vested in the National Trust for Places of Historic Interest and Natural Beauty. He set this up himself. When the auction was held in Godalming on 26 October 1905 the committee had raised enough money. The land was conveyed to the National Trust on 22 March 1906. Sir Robert also lived just long enough to see Box Hill saved for the nation. For more information from the L&DLHS go to www.leatherheadhistory.org.

Leatherhead and District u3a We held our first Hybrid meeting of the u3a in October at Fetcham Village Hall, which will be our new home. The face to face and zoom meetings ran concurrently and apart from a few “teething” problems was successful. We shall be continuing with Hybrid meetings at least until after Christmas. The motto of the u3a is “Learn, Laugh and Live” and that’s what we do with most groups opening up after 18 months due to Covid. The walking group has completed a walk each month, the local history group is researching the local manors and many other groups, canasta, reading group, the luncheon club etc. are back in full swing. We also have a new group starting on World History covering the
last 200 years. As well as the regular monthly activities we are also planning a coach trip to see the London Christmas lights in December, our annual festive lunch (at Tyrells Wood) in January, as well as a 5 day holiday to Teignmouth next July. Should you wish to join us and are over 55, in full time or part time retirement we should love to hear from you and if you are quick you will be able to join us for our December meeting on 16th when we shall be entertained by Leatherhead Barber shop choir. mole valley W.I. october report It was a beautiful sunny day in October when we had our WI Artisan Bazaar at St Mary’s Church Hall in Fetcham. Bunting and balloons greeted those who attended and the stalls included an interesting mix of handicrafts, a cake stall, bottle tombola and a raffle. It was so lovely to see people chatting and some enjoying a cup of tea with friends. At our monthly meeting in the village hall, we were welcomed by our president who introduced our speaker, John Lane, who gave a most entertaining talk entitled ‘Magic and Mysteries of the Peruvian Andes’. He shared some interesting insights gained during his many visits to Peru. After John’s talk we heard from one of our members about our next proposed outing to Faversham and Canterbury on December 6th. This trip will include a Blue Badge Guide, which should make our visit all the more interesting.
November’s meeting was our AGM followed by a WI trading stall. Mole Valley WI meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:45pm. You will be made very welcome. Throughout the year we have various activities including badminton, bridge, book club, homecraft, knit and natter, mah-jong, rambling and scrabble. LEATHERHEAD
WEDNESDAY 8 DECEMBER 2021 AT 7.30PM The Arts Society Leatherhead is delighted to be welcoming John Ericson to deliver our Christmas Lecture. He was formerly a lecturer at the University of Bath where he was Director of Studies in the School of Education with responsibility for the professional development of teachers. He has also worked extensively overseas as an educational consultant. John’s talk will be on ‘Children’s Book Illustrations’. As adults we carry in our heads huge numbers of images from childhood, and some of those most deeply etched come from illustrations in books that we read as children. Images of ‘Tigger’ and ‘Toad’ or even ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ will probably remain with us for ever. Guests are welcome. For information please contact Huw Jenkins by email on: theartssocietyleatrherhead@gmail.com Please note: This lecture may be on Zoom. Please check: www.theartssocietyleatherhead.org.uk
Mole Valley Probus Club Mole Valley Probus is a club for retired professional and business men and women and is waking up from Covid restrictions. Now back to regular monthly lunches with a speaker and with its second club outing under its belt. This was to Hatchlands to see their noted piano collection, many having been played by the famous, such as Chopin, Bizet and Elgar. Then on to Newlands Corner for a companionable Italian lunch. The monthly club lunch on the 15th of December, at Tyrrell’s Wood Golf Club, with speaker Howard Slater’s “The Gershwin Brothers and their music”, will include invitations to the partners of club members. And planned is a Spring visit to Somerset, with coach, hotel and daily excursions. The last £500 club charity donation was to The Brigitte Trust, and as soon as funds permit, the next will be to Horsley, Bookham & Leatherhead Riding for the Disabled to assist in the valuable work they do. Activities can be seen in report, photo and film on club member Steve Little’s website molevalleyprobus.chessck.co.uk and for joining see ‘Contact Us’, top right corner of the site home page.
48 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - DECEMBER 2021
The Probus clubs of Ashtead & Leatherhead have voted to join forces. With effect from 1st January 2022.
A new club, ‘Ashtead and Leatherhead Probus’ will come into existence with a combined membership of 75 local retired or semi-retired professional and business men. Probus clubs can be found throughout the UK, providing an opportunity for like-minded individuals to enjoy each other’s company and expand their horizons. Both memberships voted unanimously in favour of amalgamation. Leatherhead’s current Chairman, Jon McCarthy, who will be the first chair of the new club, commented “We are delighted with the level of support we received for the new venture. Whilst we already had so much in common with Ashtead Probus, both clubs have their own unique features which means we can take the best from both sides”. The new club will meet at Tyrrell’s Wood Golf Club, Leatherhead on the third Monday of each month. Tony Hills, the Ashtead Chairman, will also Tony Hills (L) & Jon McCarthy (R) serve on the new committee along with other members from both clubs. Echoing his Leatherhead counterpart, Tony said “The future’s bright for Ashtead and Leatherhead Probus. It will adopt Ashtead’s terrific programme of monthly lunchtime talks at Tyrrell’s Wood Golf Club and continue our visit and walking group activities. We’ll also be continuing Leatherhead’s popular programme of informal lunches at local pubs. And I’m particularly pleased their tradition of hosting Celebrity lunches will continue”. Already planned for 2022 are lunches with former Kent and England cricketer Chris Cowdrey and renowned actor, Jenny Seagrove (Judge John Deed, Local Hero, Another Mother’s Son). Members’ guests, both male and female, are welcome at meetings and events. Prospective members will be very much welcomed and for more information they should contact the new Club Secretary, Stephen Bridges, on 07806 791774 or to ashteadprobus@gmail.com. Between now and the end of the year a new website will be developed and pending its introduction, details of the monthly talks can be found at www.ashteadprobus.com. River Mole, Leatherhead
Silent Pool
As all our readers will know, the county of Surrey is blessed with green open spaces, including the North Downs, the Weald and the Surrey Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The highest point in the county is Leith Hill, with its landmark eighteenth-century tower, one of the county’s many National Trust sites. First recorded as “Suthinge”, in 722, Surrey became a favourite royal hunting ground and today it is renowned as a centre of horse-racing with courses at Epsom, Kempton and Sandown. Racing of another kind once took place at Brooklands, the scene of many record-breaking motoring feats, and during the Second World War, aircraft were manufactured there. A museum now celebrates the site’s illustrious heritage. Professional photographer John Miller has captured the spirit, essence and identity of Surrey in a series of superb images. He highlights the immense variety of places and
Rhododendron Wood, Leith Hill (National Trust)
landmarks to be found here ranging from rural to urban locations. The book features iconic landmarks that you will all know and love including the River Mole, Boxhill, Cobham Mill, Polesden Lacey and many more, some a little further afield! ’Surrey in Photographs' takes the reader across the county and throughout the seasons to capture its scenic splendour, glorious character and contrasting treasures. It will appeal to residents and visitors as well as those who have associations with the county. This is a must have on my Christmas list and I am sure it will be on yours too. The book can be purchased from Wishing Well, 7 High Street, Great Bookham as well as local bookshops and retailers, and Amazon as well as other online retailers. The book can also be purchased directly from the website (below), where each online transaction carries a 10% off RRP. https://www.amberley-books.com/ surrey-in-photographs.html

INSTRUCTIONS:
• 2 cups of basil (loosely filled) • 2 cups of parsley (loosely filled) • 3-5 Fish4Ever anchovies in organic olive oil • 1/2 cup pitted green olives • 2 cloves garlic • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar • 1/4-1/2 cup cashews • 1/2 cup of Organic Cold-pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil (add more if you think it needs to be runnier - you can always add more after) Optional: 1/2 cup grated parmigiano-reggiano (omit if dairy free & add more cashews)

DECEMBER BOOK REVIEWS Ashtead Library has these books to reserve, come & put your name down. Woodfield Lane, Ashtead, Surrey KT21 2BQ
‘The forgotten letters of Esther Durrant’ By Kayte Nunn, Orion Publishing. Set during the 1950’s and present day, this is the story of three women, their lives and careers and the harsh reality of living in an asylum. Set in rugged Cornwall, the story of abandonment, love and secrets, it is simply written with plenty of description allowing the reader to truly imagine the stark reality of Esther’s life.
‘The Silent Companions’ By Laura Purcell, Raven books. This is a gripping read, you might not want to put it down - and you might not want to read it at night, it’s a bit creepy! A shy, naïve, pregnant and recently widowed Elsie is banished to her late husband’s estate, The Bridge. Here she finds hostile and resentful staff. As she tries to join in and gain their trust, a mysterious figure the silent companion - appears. Struggling to appear in control, she becomes ever fearful as the ‘companion’ takes it’s hold…
Things to do before the end of the world - By Emily Barr Emily Barr has long been one of my favourite authors and she has recently turned her hand to young adult fiction which I have been enjoying despite being a not-so-young adult! This one did not disappoint and I was gripped from the very beginning. As with all her books, it is an intriguing plot - what would you do if you heard the world may end in a year? Main character Olivia is not sure what she should be doing - then enter Natasha who has a huge impact on her life. But is Natasha all she seems? If you enjoyed this, I would also recommend Barr’s other young adult books - The One Memory of Flora Banks and The Girl Who Came Out of the Woods.
All books are available to reserve at Ashtead Library.

NEIL CLARKE, 13363 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION
We are noting a variety of different types of criminal activity across the County in recent months and I would like to take this opportunity to mention just two of them here. The first is the theft of vehicles that are fitted with a “keyless” opening system. There are two main methods of theft that we are seeing regularly. One is by using a relay device which is actually very simple to build and use. A lot of modern vehicles are fitted with a keyless system, so the vehicle can be entered and started without the need to touch the key. In basic terms this works by the key constantly sending out a signal, the car constantly searches for that signal and when in range the car then allows the vehicle to be entered and started. Unfortunately, what thieves have been doing is using a device to pick up the signal from the key and amplifying it, so the car believes the key is next to it and allows access, start the engine and driven away. Faraday pouches or a simple metal container can be used to prevent this by blocking the signal. Also, some manufacturers have recently changed their keys, so they now have motion sensors which, when left static, go into a “sleep” mode and no longer emit a signal. Unfortunately, this can’t be retro fitted so millions of cars are still vulnerable. We are also focusing on the increasingly widespread problem of catalytic convertor theft. This is becoming increasingly common across Surrey and would appear to be linked to organised crime. What is a catalytic converter? Catalytic converters (pictured) are fitted under the engine of a car. They help to filter dangerous gases 66 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - DECEMBER 2021
from the exhaust, using a catalyst to react with the exhaust fumes and change their chemical structure. What makes and models are more at risk? Some of the most common are: Honda Jazz; Toyota Prius; Lexus RX; Honda CRV; Toyota Auris Hybrids will always remain the most sought-after vehicle in this kind of crime as they have two power sources, an electric motor and a petrol or diesel engine, so their catalytic converters are used less frequently to process pollutants. That means the metals inside are less likely to have corroded, making them more valuable. How are they being stolen? Thieves use a jack to raise cars up onto two wheels, then slide underneath the vehicle and cut the catalytic converter off using an electric saw. It’s a quick process, and thefts can be completed in under a minute. What can be done to prevent it? Raising public awareness is vital – many people don’t realise what they’re seeing, thinking that a vehicle has broken down and the thieves are doing legitimate maintenance work. Catalytic converters can be fitted with locks, which will slow thieves down, and marked, which helps us identify them if they’re stolen. But the greatest deterrent is a swift police response.
