As I am writing this message, it’s a sunny, blue-sky evening and the birds in my garden are really going to town! This also confirms that it really is the season for Summer Fetes and outside events. We have news of and/or coverage of the pick of the bunch locally! I must start by mentioning the wonderful Ashtead Rotary Village Day. What a great family day out this was and as in previous years, the turn out was fabulous. The proceeds from this day will go to a selection of great charities; Rotary raised in the region of £24,000 this year, which will be divided between a number local and international organisations such as ‘Lawrence’s Roundabout Wells’. This charity raises money for special water pumps in Africa. Donations will also go to Seeability based in Fetcham and the Mid-Surrey Dementia Care Trust. Huge thanks must go to Ashtead Rotary Club for their meticulous preparation and planning, and from where I was standing, the organisation on the day was also seamless! Fantastic job Ashtead Rotary Club. We had a very enjoyable day and I hope you enjoy re-living it, when you turn to our double page spread within. There have been plenty of other events happening locally too; we are delighted to share coverage of a fabulous, local area WI Centenary event which took place in near-by Bookham; Michelle and I went along and had a great afternoon which was also enjoyed by the many members who attended from the surrounding local areas. Tea and cakes were of course, made and enjoyed by most! As well as this, news about the impending, ever-popular, Leatherhead Duck Race! An open day full of fun at Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a wonderful Garden Show, a Probus Sporting Lunch, the next Leatherhead Rep Season, and many more too! I hope you find something that takes your fancy! If you fancy a little culture, we have another fabulous competition this month: The Immersion Theatre Company are offering the chance to win tickets to see their production of ‘The Importance of Being Ernest’ – turn to page 31 for further details. That’s about it from my until next month, I hope you enjoy this busy issue. Warmest Regards,
Ros

Ministry of Justice launches power of attorney refund scheme This month local expert Seila Sanchez Lucas discusses a recent scheme launched by the Ministry of Justice to refund those who may have paid more than they should for applying to register powers of attorney. If you registered a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) or Enduring Power of Attorney between 1 April 2013 and 31 March 2017 you may be eligible for a refund. This can be claimed either by the person who made the power of attorney (called the “donor”) or by the attorney. The amount refunded will vary depending on the date on which the document was registered. Further information and the form required to claim is available online at https://www.gov.uk/power-ofattorney-refund or by calling the helpline on 0300 456 0300 (choosing option six). LPAs, together with Wills, are a cornerstone of sensible planning for your future and well worth considering if you do not currently have them in place. LPAs are legal documents that enable a person to choose someone that they trust to make decisions and take action on their behalf now or in the future. There are two types of LPA:
• The first gives the attorney authority to make decisions relating to the donor’s property
and financial matters, for example, paying bills, selling their property or investments and operating their bank accounts;
• The second relates to the donor’s personal
welfare and healthcare and matters such as medical treatment and where the donor should live.
If someone has become incapable of making their own decisions, and has not made a power of attorney, then it may be necessary for a relative or close friend to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as a deputy on their behalf. Applying to the Court of Protection is a lengthy and costly process and can be stressful for those involved. You would not have control over who applies to the court and this could mean that someone who you might not necessarily have chosen would be able to make decisions on your behalf. At TWM we have a dedicated team of experts across our offices who specialise in advising on and preparing Lasting Powers of Attorney. For further information, please contact any member of our Private Client team.

WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945
JUST TO UPDATE YOU...
Reception and specific appointments may be made. Surrey Police also run a weekly surgery on Mondays (122) for reporting less urgent issues on a drop-in basis. Highways Issues At a recent Highways Forum, at which David Baker represented the ARA, we raised the issue of cars now parking at the south end of Woodfield Lane creating, in effect, a single-lane road: it is believed these are displaced vehicles from the Grove Road area following the introduction there of a Controlled Parking Zone. Cllr Chris Townsend is requesting an Ashtead-wide review of parking, rather than attacking each problem piecemeal. He will work to get this into Highways’ plans, but it is unlikely to occur before the 2019/2020 financial year. Surrey Highways has advised that the flooding on the A24 at Downsend School has been added to their list of top 5 sites to be investigated. Verge damage is an offence under the Highways Act and anyone causing damage of this kind should be reported to Surrey County Council (SCC) using www.surreycc. gov.uk. Cars half-parked on pavements (2 wheels on; 2 wheels off) is a similar offence if the vehicle is creating an obstruction. (Rule of thumb is whether a double buggy could pass through). The following consultations have also now been opened and will be closing on 26th August 2018: Low Emissions Transport Strategy: The aim of this draft strategy is to reduce harmful emissions from road transport across the county and work with partners to achieve legal compliance for air quality locally. Electric Vehicle Strategy: The aim of this draft strategy is to develop a Surrey-wide approach to encourage growth in the use of electric vehicles. You can view both consultations and have your say at www.surreycc.gov.uk/cleanertravel.
Transform Leatherhead Riverside Development The plans for Claire and James House in Bridge Street will go on public exhibition starting 8th July and a final determination on the development is expected in the early months of 2019. Further development of the Riverside Park along the banks of the Mole will follow but, prior to that, work will be carried out on flood alleviation. Swan Centre Lift replacement will begin in the autumn and planning has gone through for the improvements to the car park – fixing the tight bends between floors and enlarging the size of the parking spaces. However, proposals to relocate the lavatories have been shelved and refurbishment of the existing facilities is now planned. A firm of consultants has been appointed to conduct a Development Viability Study on the Centre and the properties at Numbers 21 & 23 in the High Street (both recently purchased by Mole Valley District Council) will be incorporated into the study. In the meantime, the newly purchased premises are available for businesses to lease. Urban Quarter The Urban Quarter covers the Bull Hill area but planning on how this site may be developed awaits the outcome of a Transport Study for which transport and car park data is anticipated to be collected in June this year. Local Policing The removal of the front desk police presence from the MVDC Pippbrook offices was the cause of some concern earlier this year but Inspector Karen Coyne of Surrey Police has said that this has led to one staff reduction only and that access to Police advice is undiminished since the team remains in the building. There will still be access to police support via 101 or through the main MVDC Glynis Peterkin - Chairman Data Protection Privacy Statement (also available to read on our website)

This guide about backing up our computers was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, which have been providing computer solutions since 1989. What an exciting few months we have been having, so we thought it would be worthwhile recapping some things that you may have missed: GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) came into force on 25 May 18. Generally speaking the regulation is there to protect you, your data and how companies and organisations handle and protect your data. Something you have the right to do, is to ask any company or organisation holding your data to reveal what information they are holding about you, and ask them if required, to delete some or all of the information. The company or organisation has to do this within 30 days or they are in breach of the GDPR regulation Scam Callers, we have heard of a marked increase in the number of scam callers recently, there appears to be two common approaches, one is that you answer the phone to a recorded message saying something like “This is your telephone provider and we have detected a broadband
32 The Ashtead & Leatherhead Local - July 2018
fault, to continue press any key on your telephone keypad…” if you do this you will be connected to someone who wants to connect to your computer. The second approach is from a firm purporting to be Microsoft or on Microsoft’s behalf and they identified you have a problem with your computer. In both cases we would encourage you to say you will make your own enquiries, however if you let them connect to your computer, your device may be compromised as the security of your machine could be breached, and you need to check there is nothing malicious installed on your machine. If you have doubts that you may be a victim, please call us as we can ensure your machine is clean Solid Sate Drives - can offer a massive speed upgrade to your machine, and the good news is the cost of these drives has fallen recently, with SSD prices starting from £45.00. We can copy all of your information from your existing drive onto the new SSD, ensuring all your programs and data remain intact. Please call for more information.

The Best Bargains
39
For the best online prices, it’s a really good idea to sign up to shopping sites’ mailing lists. There are often sales, flash discounts and other offers that non-subscribers don’t hear about, and in some cases the discounts can be very big: for example, New Look has offered £25 off orders and GAP has taken 20% off sale items and 30% off full-price styles. You could also sign up for a deals service such as Groupon, but beware: they send an awful lot of emails, and many of the deals are subject to limits in terms of availability and expiry. Whenever you see a supposed bargain on a product or service you can get elsewhere, it’s always a good idea to see what the going rate usually is.

LURCHER SOS NEEDS YOU!!
COULD YOU SAVE A LIFE?
Lurcher SOS is a Surrey based Lurcher, Greyhound and Sighthound Rescue started in 2010 by two lifelong lurcher owners Laurie & Ed with a network of supporters, fundraisers and foster homes in Kent, Hampshire, Sussex, Surrey, Essex, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, but they home their dogs throughout England, Wales and Scotland. Run entirely by volunteers, their mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and home, abused, abandoned and neglected Lurchers, Greyhounds and Sighthounds. Lurcher SOS takes in Sighthounds of all ages; from puppies to oldies. These dogs come to them for various reasons – some are strays, some have been ill treated and some need to find a new home simply because their owners no longer want them. Some of these dogs are so emotionally and physically scarred that they will need long periods in foster homes, learning to trust humans again. All their dogs are placed in warm and loving foster
38 The Ashtead & Leatherhead Local - July 2018
homes where they are carefully assessed and, if needed, rehabilitated. They are a non-profit organisation and receive no funding, so rely solely on donations from the public and are always in need of fundraising support to cover the cost of the care of their dogs. They are always actively seeking new foster parents and permanent homes for our rescue dogs. They are in desperate need of foster homes. You will need a garden with secure 6 foot fence, to be home most of the time and children will have to be 10 years old or over. They occasionally have dogs that can be fostered with cats but are desperate for cat free foster homes. For full details on fostering go to: http://www.lurchersos.org.uk/fostering For other ways to get involved go to: www.lurchersos.org www.facebook.com/lurchersos

THE BARBEQUE Copyright Sarah Lott, June 2018
www.thememorybook.co.uk
sarah@thememorybook.co.uk | @thememorybook | facebook/thememorybook There was nothing better than a sunny afternoon with friends, cold beer and barbequed meat. That was Sam’s philosophy and, in this area of haute cuisine, he considered himself a master. He didn’t have time for gas barbeques. Barbequed meat only tasted right if it was cooked over charcoal - proper black, dirty charcoal that took forever to light and needed tender loving supervision. Ruth wasn’t so keen. Any barbeque event had to be followed by an enthusiastic stream of praise and gratitude, which was quite exhausting. She cooked a meal almost every night but when in charge of a barbeque, Sam behaved as though he’d invented the art of cooking single handedly. The weather forecast was good and it was Ruth’s birthday weekend. As far as Sam was concerned, this presented him with the perfect opportunity to kill three birds with one stone. He could treat his lovely wife, entertain the family and use the barbeque – all on the same afternoon. Phone calls were made, shopping lists were written and charcoal was bought. Sam was ready. Ruth had been treated to a birthday barbeque many times and knew the routine. A few days before, Sam asked if she could ‘pop to the butchers’ to pick up some meat and perhaps ‘make some salads and stuff’. She accepted the kind offers to make puddings from the more thoughtful members of her family but was surprised to get a last minute phone call from Julie, Sam’s sister. Julie had recently bought a new puppy, a ‘darling’ Schnauzer called Petal. She’d be bringing her along, of course. Was Cracker, Ruth’s Cockerpoo, well trained? She didn’t want Petal to be influenced by a naughty or boisterous dog. Could Cracker also be fed beforehand as Petal was on a specialist organic diet due to her sensitive and delicate metabolism. Ruth went to the butcher’s on the Friday. She bought some very expensive sausages, beef burgers and some delicious looking marinated and mint infused lamb
42 The Ashtead & Leatherhead Local - July 2018
kebabs. She then went to the deli and bought some quiches (just in case). The supermarket was the last stop for napkins, salad, ice cream and soft drinks. On the morning of the party, the sun was struggling to break through the clouds. Sam and the children gave Ruth her presents and then Sam raced off to buy the beer and wine. Ruth tidied and vacuumed the kitchen and living room, cleaned the downstairs loo and started on the salads. Meanwhile, Daniel and Ben valiantly tried to put up a gazebo, which seemed to be missing a couple of poles. The guests were due at midday. Sam came home at about eleven thirty and put on his special barbeque apron, which proudly read ‘James Bond, licensed to grill…’ He gave Ruth a kiss and headed out into the garden to set up the barbeque before greeting his guests, tongs in hand. Much to Julie’s concern, Cracker and Petal immediately started to race madly & Services around theShops garden. When the first drops of rain began to fall, they all trailed inside, reassuring each other that it would soon blow over. Sam remained stoically at his post under a large golfing umbrella. Sure enough, a few minutes later, the sun came out and Sam could be seen through the window carefully laying out the lamb kebabs in neat rows in trays on the garden bench. There was a sudden panic. Petal had gone missing and Julie was becoming increasingly hysterical. What had Cracker done to her poor little dog? Julie was the first to notice the crime scene. Cracker was snoozing innocently under the trampoline while a trail of delicious looking marinated and mint infused lamb kebabs, pointed like an arrow in the direction of a rhododendron bush where the tail of a small Schnauzer was wagging appreciatively. Ruth relished the sight of Julie’s horrified face and bit her lip. It was such a shame that the lamb wasn’t organic… 32

If you repeat the same workout such as running or spinning the body adapts in just 4 weeks, the energy expenditure drops, ie you find it easier and therefore the body needs to use less energy to get results, this is when you plateau, slowing your weight loss. Doing more of the same will not bring back those initial results and could lead to injuries from the repetitive movements and strains on your joints.
HERE’S HOW TO KEEP YOUR WORKOUTS FRESH AND THE RESULTS COMING! 1. Keep your body on its toes – if the exercise is getting too easy then crank it up. 2. Keep the body guessing, swap squats for lunges, running for rowing, kettlebells for dumbbells. 3. Renew your workout every few weeks 4. Beware of overtraining, as the body will conserve extra energy leading to diminishing returns and injury! Take a day off! 5. Alter the intensity, frequency and duration of your workouts 6. Join our next taster weeks our workouts change every session, we do HIIT, Kettlebell, Boxing and Circuits!

GARDEN FOR PEOPLE AND WILDLIFE
DESIGNS FOR ALL SEASONS
Selina Botham - 07894 553 202 or visit us online at www.designsforallseasons.co.uk
For many of us being surrounded with wildlife in our gardens is a dream, but Wildlife gardens seem to have a bad reputation and may even be an excuse for an unkempt and undesigned garden. However, it doesn’t have to be like that and gardens can be designed to work as practical and beautiful spaces for people and can still be great for wildlife too. Award winning garden designer Selina Botham shares her top tips for creating a successful ‘designer wildlife garden’:1. Design a garden that you will like and enjoy being in. Don’t worry if you like a well-structured space - the bees don’t mind about the layout or design, they just want plenty to eat and somewhere to rest. 2. Preserve mature trees and shrubs (where possible) and even plant some more to give a variety of blossom and berries. Something in flower in each season is a great bonus for wildlife and for you too. 3. Be relaxed about your lawn. If you have a ‘chemical free’ lawn, you don’t need to worry about polluting the environment and you get the added benefit of some very pretty wildflowers and of course lots of happy insects and birds. In my own lawn I have a pretty mix of flowers and only weed out dandelions which are my least favourite weed. 4. Design in meadow areas. Long grass is beautiful and adds romantic texture in the garden, its also great for wildlife, especially if you leave it long in the winter.
58 The Ashtead & Leatherhead Local - July 2018
Meadow is available as rolls of turf nowadays so as long as the fertility of your soil is reduced then these are very effective. 5. Brighten your garden with flowers that provide nectar. This is easy as most flowers produce nectar, just avoid doubles and heavily in-bred annual bedding plants. Pelargoniums (geraniums) are no use at all to bees as they have no nectar. 6. Include a pond or have a birdbath or a natural water feature. Keep the water clean by using oxygenating plants rather than chemicals. Make sure there is a way in and out for wildlife too such as a bridge or beach area 7. Use cut logs, either set into the ground as a sculpture or stacked under a bench or as a feature in their own right. 8. Have a compost heap/messy space where you can pile leaves and garden waste. This makes life easier for you and benefits the environment too. 9. Incorporate hedgehog entrance holes in your fences. This only needs to be 13cm high and wide and will mean that these cute but endangered creatures can get in to forage in your garden. If you’d like help creating a beautiful garden which you and you family can enjoy and will also benefit wildlife, do contact Selina at Designs For All Seasons. 07894 553202 or look at our website www.designsforallseasons.co.uk for further ideas or check out out Facebook page.
YOUTH TRIP ROMANIA 2018
This summer LYP and AllSaints are running a joint youth trip to Romania! We will be taking a team of 12 people including the entire AllSaints team of apprentices and a group of young people from Leatherhead and Bookham to run a summer activity camp for gypsy children and teenagers. We will be based in a gypsy village called Soard, in the Transylvania region of Romania, where LYP has been visiting, delivering projects and building up relationships for 10 years. Soard itself is a large village with many gypsy families and their children living in abject poverty who have minimal opportunities to progress. The summer camp we will be delivering brings young people together across a huge divide and is a muchanticipated event in the calendar for both groups. International youth trips are an important part of our joint strategy for helping local young people grow, gain confidence and broaden their horizons. The opportunity to travel, meet new people, work as part of a team and engage in a different culture
provides a great chance to grow skills, increase awareness, and learn about themselves and the world. These trips are full of new challenges, and young people have to learn to cope with communicating across the language barrier, negotiating key cultural differences, and giving up some home comforts. We have many stories of young people returning from international trips having had a fantastic time and having grown in new ways. This is the first time AllSaints have sent their whole team to benefit from the experience, and we are really excited about the learning opportunity this provides, not to mention the chance to grow together as a team. We are also excited to be partnering with the LYP staff and young people who bring experience and energy to the team. This does of course mean that AllSaints will be closed from Tues 10th July until Mon 16th July, which we are very sorry about, but we hope you understand the reasons behind this. Please come in for lunch afterwards to ask our apprentices about their trip!

D I R EC T O R GRAHAM POUNTNEY
Director and Producer of JOURNEY’S END
P r o d u c e r , director, actor and communications skills coach, Graham grew up in East Horsley, and now lives locally in Leatherhead. He trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, and his 45 year career has encompassed Film, TV, Rep theatre, the Royal National Theatre and of course the West End. Amongst his TV and Film work has been Howard’s Way, Goodbye Mr. Chips with Martin Clunes, and EastEnders! Over the last 45 years he has also been a founder and leading player of the British Actors Theatre Company, a director of The Original Shakespeare Company, and the Associate Artistic Director of the Leatherhead Theatre Rep Company. Graham founded Theatre Reviva! , his own theatre

company, in 2017 so as to bring regular, seasonal, theatre productions back into the local area. Journey’s End, set in 1918 and hailed as an anti-war classic, is his biggest and most ambitious production to date. The play is a gripping, classic drama about a group of British soldiers in the trenches in the First World War and he is hugely pleased to be presenting this at his local Theatre. Its first performance in 1929 featured Laurence Olivier in the lead role! And this production also has a cast of notable local actors, and some exceptional sound effects. The 2 venues will be transformed so as to celebrate the centenary of the War’s end, and to help provide a memorable evening. Not satisfied with just the theatre, Graham founded in 2014 the Surrey Hills Community Radio station; and recently set-up LAUNCHPAD, a social enterprise to help young people build up their self-belief and learn employability skills. He is also a partner, with his wife Suki, in Centre Stage Dance and Drama, a dance school based in Oxshott, and Theatretrain, a Saturday Musical Theatre school, run from Royal Kent School, Oxshott.

THE GOOD OLD W.I. Time used to fly at such a hectic pace. Life was just a never-ending race But, I found I had more time, as years went by, So thought that I should join the WI. And as I live next door, it seemed to me, That this would be the perfect place to be. When I told my friends what I had done, They said “ Oh, yes. They have a lot of fun”. The men said “Will you take off your gear, To appear upon the calendar next year?” But no-one’s asked me to remove my clothes, Behind a plate of buns and strike a pose. In spite of that, I’m glad I took the plunge. I’ve renewed the skill of making chocolate sponge And knitted lots of brightly coloured squares Enjoying good companionship we share. Friendships made that lasted through the years Sharing days of happiness and tears. So, long may live the good old WI To be a tower of strength for you and I.

MEETING REPORT FETCHAM VILLAGE W.I.
At the May meeting Secretary Sylvia outlined and discussed the proposed Resolution of Mental Health Matters, and a vote was taken. There was a bring and buy table along with the regular card and book stalls. Committee member Anne proudly showed our pollinator which will be included in the Wisley trail on the evening of the 28th June. The speaker was Mrs. Emma Macfarlane accompanied by her colleague Amanda, and we heard of Emma’s climb to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Her slides showed various stages of the journey, and a question and answer session afterwards completed an interesting and enjoyable presentation. As a nod to the very mixed weather that day, a plucky rendition of ‘though April showers may come your way’ ended the evening, and it was good to see so many joining in, including visitor Joyce. The annual treasure hunt on the 9th gave us a
74 The Ashtead & Leatherhead Local - July 2018
sunny afternoon in which to enjoy the President’s garden in Stoke D’Abernon, and we also found time for a game or two of Escalado. On the 23rd a group of members attended the Surrey Centenary celebrations at the Old Barn Hall, and we were invited to admire many exhibits and memorabilia, with two sessions of the Surrey Serenaders to enjoy, and an amazing Tombola fest. Attendance was excellent, and the ‘spring in a teacup’ entries exquisite. Find out about our extremely knowledgeable June speaker Colin Parrish, a Royal History teacher, who will be talking about the Daughters of Queen Victoria. We warmly welcome visitors at 7.30 pm on the first Wednesday of the month, in the Rumble Room at Fetcham Village Hall.

MEETING REPORT ASHTEAD W.I.
This evening along with the pleasing rise in our membership numbers, we heard of the need to relocate to our main hall, which will happen in September. This will give us more space when needed to accommodate demonstrations, group activities, and more comfortable seating arrangements. Tonight our Garden Group provided many plants – inside and out – for our members to choose from, an excellent fund-raiser for our Institute. Some of our members had success at crafts and flower arrangements at the W.I. Centenary celebrations which took place in Bookham in May. Thinking ahead, final plans have been made for our always popular stall at Ashtead Village Day, we will be enjoying a visit to Portsmouth later this month, and a visit to Waddesden Manor is planned for August. We will also be attending the Perfect Pollinator evening at Wisley in June, looking forward to seeing our Ashtead Blue Butterfly among many other pollinators made by Surrey W.I.s Our speaker this evening was Andy Thomas, on
Unexplained Mysteries & Cover Ups, with the theories on pyramids in Egypt and other parts of the world, thoughts on the Loch Ness Monster and the finding of a live coelacanth, government cover-ups, secret societies, and controversies over the lunar and Mars landings. Andy also told us about a 5,000 year cycle predicted from ancient times, which could be starting again now, and bringing good changes for everyone! He finished by saying that the truth is out there if you know what to look for, is this the whole story, and don’t take things at face value. Gosh, what a lot to get our heads round! Already some good news for Ashtead W.I. as one of our long-standing members, Rosemary Stark has deservedly been recognised for all her work in Ashtead Village, the award being made at our Village Day. We had upto-date details of our sub-groups and our come-along lunch, and our next meeting will be on Wednesday 4th July, 7.15 for 7.30 in the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall.
FROM SANDRA BROWN
MEETING REPORT MOLE VALLEY W.I.
On a beautiful warm May evening, members of Mole Valley WI arrived at the meeting to see a full table of plants for sale and most of them were sold during the evening. There were four visitors who, we hope, enjoyed the meeting. Tickets for the Emlyn Centennial Celebrations on May 23rd were on sale and bakers were found to make some of the cakes that will be available on the day. This event takes place at Bookham Barn Hall between 2.00 and 5.00pm. Linda and Denise were taking names for the coach to take members to The Perfect Pollinator Evening at Wisley on 28th June for the Surrey Federation Centenary celebrations. Two members presented the resolution on mental
health, which was unanimously passed and the delegate will take our vote to the AGM in Cardiff in June. Then followed a beetle drive and two members had joint top scores and there were some rather strange looking beetles too! More details of our rambling, gardening, Scrabble and bridge groups as well as details of the monthly meetings can be found on our website ‘molevalley. btck.co.uk’ or come along to Fetcham Village Hall for our next meeting on the second Tuesday of the month 10th July at 7.30pm (7.45pm start) You will be given a warm welcome.

ASHTEAD WORKING TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE Back off the vol-au-vents…
If you are at the back of the buffet queue (at a party/ wedding/any gathering…) and the plates on the buffet table are getting empty, have you noticed what happens? People take less than they would when the plates are full, to leave some for those behind them. In that situation, it’s fairly easy to gauge how to share available resources because you can see it laid out in front of you. And anyway, you would look pretty greedy if you hoovered up all the vol au vents and left nothing for others… How much more difficult it is to know if we are using our fair share of the world’s resources. Since 2003 the Global Footprint Network (GFN) has been attempting the tricky business of measuring the impact of humans on the planet. “Ecological foot-printing” is where researchers look at how much land, sea and other natural resources are used to produce what people consume - how many potatoes they eat, how much milk they drink, the cotton that goes into the shirts they wear and so on. GFN is trying to work out, as we only have one planet, how much planet is available per person and how much planet do we use per person. The answers are expressed in an unusual unit - the ‘global hectare’, defined as a biologically productive hectare with world-average bio-productivity. Using these figures, it’s possible to estimate how many Earths would be needed to sustain consumption levels if the whole
76 The Ashtead & Leatherhead Local - July 2018
world consumed at the same rate as various counties. The UK comes in at number 32 in the list – not bad, you may think, lots of countries are worse than we are. But if everyone in the world used resources at the same rate as we do, it would take 2.4 earths to keep the supply going. And how ever much we spend on exploring space, realistically we do only have one planet at our disposal. For the record, Kuwait is top of the pops in this list, needing 5.1 earths, and the United States comes in at number 5, needing 3.9 earths. So, the question is, how do we share the resources we have in the most equitable fashion? At the personal level, maybe it’s time to reassess what we ‘need’ rather than just want. Perhaps imagine being watched by those with very little or those in future generations if we fail to change how we consume resources and pollute the planet. See http://www.50waystohelp.com/ for some ideas to get you going. The numbers quoted above are undoubtedly inaccurate but they do highlight an important issue – it is clear that we in the affluent parts of the world are using more than our fair share of world resources. Or put another way, being greedy with the vol au vents… Chris Ellis For more information about Transition Ashtead, see our website at www.TransitionAshtead.org.uk

“BOOKS ARE UNIQUELY PORTABLE MAGIC” - STEPHEN KING
‘The Sparsholt Affair’ byAlan Hollinghurst (paperback £8.99) Alan Hollinghurst has the ability to evoke the spirit of a generation with a turn of phrase and the talismans of everyday life. The Sparsholt Affair, following a family through seventy years and three generations from October 1940, is an immersive journey through the atmospheric changes those years bring. Through protagonists who feel slightly apart from their peers Hollinghurst exposes the insecurities and frailties of all his characters, as everyone seeks a sense of belonging. Even those who consider themselves part of established normality find that the ground shifts over time as laws, love, society, and family structures open out into new shapes and possibilities. ‘World Without Mind: The Existential Threat of Big Tech’ by Franklin Foer hardback £18.99 (paperback due September) As someone with little understanding of how social media is constructed I found this illuminating read surprisingly easy to connect with. Foer has delivered a fascinating and necessary plunge into the narrow minds of the powerful men who drive the engines of Amazon, Facebook, Apple and Google, and who are changing our world on a daily basis to suit their ambitions. Foer has inside experience of how social media changes minds, and understands the psychological importance of reading offline: “The page permits us, for a time in our day, to decouple from the machine, to tend to our human core.” Enjoy a few hours of independence from the hive mind by turning off your devices and exploring the pages of this book without distraction. ‘AWashington Black’ by Walking’ by Esi Edugyan (hardback published 30th August, £14.99) George Washington Black, an 11 year old field slave on a Barbados sugar plantation, is terrified to be chosen by his master’s brother as a manservant. Christopher Wilde turns out to be an eccentric inventor and when a man is killed and a bounty placed on Wash’s head they take flight and arrive in the Arctic in search of Christopher’s errant father. Here Wilde disappears and Wash is forced to make his way through life alone. Based on an infamous 19th century criminal case this is a really amazing story.

Emmeline (Emily) Pankhurst
Emmeline Pankhurst
It is recorded that Mrs. Emmeline (Emily) Pankhurst, a founder member of the Suffragette movement, was held in the Kingston Road Police Station on 24th February 1913. She had been arrested in London, following a bombing incident and taken to Leatherhead where she was questioned and charged. Superintendent Coleman reported; “She is being detained in Inspector Herbert Tudgay’s sitting room, and I have arranged for Inspector Tudgay to let her sleep in one of his bedrooms tonight.” Instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions had requested that whilst in custody Mrs.Pankhurst should be treated with due consideration. Next day Mrs. Pankhurst was bailed from Epsom Magistrates Court having been driven to the court with the Superintendent, which made her the first person in the Surrey Constabulary area to have been ‘conveyed
Leatherhead Police Station circa 1930s
to court in a motor car’. The Police Station stood in its own grounds. Two pairs of police houses dating from the 1930s were built in Kingston Avenue, just behind the Police Station. In the 1960s the Police Station was extended on the South side increasing the frontage by almost half as much again. Around the same time a pair of semi detached police houses was built in Kingston Road next to the station on ground that was originally an orchard on Police property. The Police Station was demolished to make way for Churchill Retirement Homes called Emmeline Lodge after her. TO NEW YORK CITY!
Local author Chris Sullivan and his wife Deborah lived in NY for three months. Deborah was posted there for work purposes and Chris went along to explore the city. ‘The Apple Insider’ is a great read and covers their adventures during this time. Full of Architectural appreciation, and interesting historical tipbits, coupled with a whole array of fascinating and amusing situations that they finds themselves in along the way! Chris’s writing style is entertaining and easy to read. He provides a lighthearted and very relatable look at this awesome city. Their exploration of the city takes them to a vast selection of land marks; From Brooklyn Bridge, to Ground Zero. Up & Down Manhattan, Grand Central Station, a selection of Irish Bars, The Rockerfellow Centre, Harlem and even to Trump Towers ! Chris becomes a ‘wedding entertainer’ at one point and Deborah has a brush with the law …. What a great read, I really enjoyed it ! Published by ‘Pegasus Elliot Mackenzie Publishers Ltd’ Available from Amazon at £7.99 it’s a great buy.

NOTICE SURREY POLICE VEHICLE CRIME
There have been a growing number of incidents where motorists have had their cars stolen during the course of a house burglary. Modern cars may have very sophisticated locks, immobilisers and other security devices but, as mentioned in a previous article, there are now devices which can be used to “read” information from car keys kept inside a property and enable a thief to gain access to the vehicle. The cheapest and best way to prevent the use of this type of device is to keep keys inside a metal container. Apart from this, there are still vehicles which use conventional keys which have been targeted by thieves. The following advice will help prevent you becoming a victim of this type of crime: • Thieves are selecting cars they want to steal from outside houses. They will look for any opportunity to steal keys that are left hanging up in the kitchen or hallway or left on a flat surface - and will actually target them. It is, therefore, vital that householders hide their keys from view. Many houses have glass panels in the front door, where visitors can see into the hallway. Please remember this when choosing a location for any items of value, including the keys to your car. • A common place to keep car keys is just inside the front door on a table or hook. This can enable a would-
be thief to “fish” the keys off the table or hook by using a simple implement inserted through the letter box. It is alarming to know that devices that can do this can actually be purchased readily online!! • If you have a garage, always make sure your car is parked and secured in it overnight. If the garage is directly attached to your house, you should ensure that the connecting door is secure and locked and treated in the same way as an external door. • Never have anything containing your registration, name or address attached to your car keys. This makes it far too easy to identify the purpose of the keys. • Use, or consider investing in, a good home security system. Again, it is worth making enquiries with several firms before deciding on what type of system is most appropriate. Also, you can always ask for a free home security assessment. Just contact me to arrange an appointment. My direct telephone number is 01483 630809, or email neil.clarke@surrey. pnn.police.uk • Consider purchasing a battery-powered vehicle CCTV system, which can be activated by either movement and/or sound. As mentioned previously, a very versatile product that I have seen is The Cube. You can see how it works by going to the following link:https://uwatch.co.uk/the-uwatch-cube/
