year has in store for us all … We are delighted to share a lovely feature about a collaboration between The Princess Alice Hospice and The Cobham Conservation & Heritage Trust. Our lovely feathered friends at the river are now able to enjoy some delicious custommade duck food pellets which offer a really good, & balanced nutritional feast for the birds. See page 24 for more details on how you can purchase these tasty treats and keep the aquatic residents of Cobham fed and healthy this winter! Have you spotted the very lovely new Stoke D’Abernon Village Sign? If not keep an eye out for it on your travels but we have a nice picture included for you to check out that’s on page 25. First Cobham Guides hosted a Birthday Tea Party recently for former guides and leaders at the Guide Hall in Cobham to mark their one hundredth Birthday! Read about their wonderful celebrations on page 30. And finally, an event for your new diary! 10th - 16th February, if you’re free and you fancy a little visit to Denbies Wine Estate near Dorking, there will be a treat in store as 6 popular artists who exhibited there last year return with a new exhibition entitled ‘A New View.’ Wishing you a great start to this New Year! Best Regards,
Ros

Debris Removal Blocked gutters can lead to damp problems and damaged brickwork potentially costing thousands of pounds as debris from trees and excessive moss growth can cause major problems.
Telephone: 01932 783308 sales@alcleaning.com www.alcleaning.com
The build up of muck washed from the roof by rain water, bird droppings, moss and lichen can grow at an alarming rate, even if your property has no trees in the vicinity, hence it is advisable to have your gutters cleared on an annual basis to prevent water damage to your property. A&L Cleaning provide a fast, efficient gutter clearance service for residential properties and commericial buildings throughout Greater London, Surrey, Middlesex and Berkshire.

baked meatballs with tomato & mascarpone ingredients method ½ tbsp olive oil 300g pack reduced fat British beef meatballs 200g pack swiss chard 3 garlic cloves, crushed 680g bottle Cirio Passata Rustica 2 oregano sprigs 2 tbsp mascarpone (Serves 4)
1. Preheat the oven to 180ËšC, gas mark 4. Heat the oil in a large ovenproof casserole dish, sautĂŠ pan or frying pan over a high heat. Add the meatballs, season and fry for 5 minutes until browned all over. Meanwhile, strip the chard leaves from the stalks. 2. Finely slice the chard stalks and add to the pan with the garlic; fry for a minute. Pour in the passata, add the oregano sprigs, then season (you may want to add a pinch of sugar too). Transfer the uncovered pan to the oven for 15 minutes. 3. Remove the pan from the oven and stir in the mascarpone. Tear the chard leaves into large strips and stir into the sauce. Return the pan to the oven for 5 minutes, then serve with couscous or pasta, if liked.
cooking tip For a one-pot meal, stir a pouch of ready-cooked freekeh or can of drained butter beans into the sauce along with the chard leaves, before baking for the final 5 minutes.

Cobham Care Have you ever wondered how elderly people living in Cobham who no longer drive get to hospital appointments at Epsom, St. Peter’s or Royal Surrey or even to the Doctors? Cobham Care is a group of volunteers who take people to their appointments. We are short of drivers and many of us are elderly. For the service to continue we really need some more volunteers. All you need is a car, a clean driving licence and comprehensive insurance and a little time.
Could you help?
WINTER VISITORS Winter is an easy time to attract wildlife into your garden. With harsher weather in the countryside a plethora of winter visitors will flock to your garden – should you provide them with a reason to do so. Water is key, if you keep your bird bath fresh and free from ice incoming birds will recognise your garden as a good winter home. Food is also vital and not just from feeders. Small birds like robins need protein from worms and other insects. Leaving a covering of leaves on your borders is a good way of providing homes for insects and food for birds. Birds also rely heavily on berries. Exciting winter visitors like fieldfares, redwings and waxwings are drawn to plants laden with food. Mountain ash, pyracantha, crab apple and hawthorn are just a few of the best winter feeders for winged visitors. Containing species such as hawthorn, blackthorn and dog rose, mixed native hedges provide food as well as shelter all year round and will attract wildlife for you to enjoy. Hedging as well as trees are best planted in winter when they are dormant, giving them the best start for next spring. For more tips and tricks please visit

DUCKS GO QUACKERS FOR CHARITY SHOP FARE
Posh nosh is being served up to the feathered residents of the river Mole thanks to a local heritage and conservation project being supported by the Princess Alice Hospice shop. Custom-made duck food pellets - said to be better for aquatic birds than common or garden bread -are now available from the Hospice’s Cobham shop, just a few yards from the Riverhill platform installed by the river in the village. The duck food, sourced by the Cobham Conservation and Heritage Trust, is being sold at the shop with a proportion of the profit going to the Hospice funds. Donations of £1 are requested for each packet. “It’s a wing-wing situation!” said area retail manager Libby Dey. “There’s a new CCHT sign at the duck feeding station telling people they can get the special duck food at the Hospice shop - so they pop along to buy it and often end up browsing our rails and shelves

for bargains. “It’s a great way of being part of the community in which the Hospice’s services are available.” The trust - which holds an annual duck race on the river every September - is dedicated to the protection, enhancement and development of Conservation Areas, of which there are four in Cobham. The trust is a local charity which relies on volunteers to help run the trust, promote local history and conservation issues and organise fund-raising events. “The village is very much defined by its association with the River Mole,” said CCHT environment officer Laurence Wells “and the traditional simple pleasure of feeding the ducks is very popular for all ages. “By highlighting the importance of supplying good quality food to our wildlife, in partnership with the Hospice’s nearby shop, it reinforces everyone’s feeling of community spirit.”
STOKE D’ABERNON NEW VILLAGE SIGN WRITTEN BY SUE PRENTICE
Photographs copyright Clive Friend
You may have noticed a new village sign erected recently in Stoke d’Abernon. The local Residents’ Association has been responsible for the project and was made possible thanks to fund raising from local residents, a generous donation from the Cobham Conservation and Heritage Trust and an Elmbridge Borough Council CIL grant (Communities Infrastructure Levy). The new Village Sign is situated at the corner of Blundel Lane and the Stoke Road and had two ceremonies in December; a blessing from the Reverend Godfrey Hilliard the Rector of the parish church of Stoke d’Abernon (St Mary’s) and an official opening from the Embridge BC Mayor (Councillor Mary Sheldon) at the Stoke d’Abernon Christmas Lights Event in early December. The sign reflects a number of local features and local people. The shape of the sign copies the beautiful triple lancet East window in St Mary’s Church with its
magnificent 15th century stained glass. The left hand panel depicts the Church itself, which dates from the 7th century and is one of the oldest churches in England. The middle panel depicts one of the d’Abernon Knights who owned the manor and the church between the 12th to 14th centuries and who are commemorated by the wonderful Military Brasses in St Mary’s Church. The shield is the d’Abernon family’s coat of arms. The right hand panel shows the importance of cricket to the village. Bob Willis an England Cricket Captain, who sadly passed away in December 2019 grew up in Stoke d’Abernon and the cricket club and pitch are still at the heart of the village today. Ian Nelson, the Chairman of the Stoke d’Abernon Residents’ Association commented “We are delighted that we have been able to erect the new sign. It is situated at the centre of the village and highlights the history and the pride people feel in our community.”.

100 years of guiding! 1st Cobham Guides celebrate their 100th Birthday.
The current members of 1st Cobham Guides recently hosted a birthday tea party for former guides and leaders at the Guide Hall in Cobham to mark their one hundredth birthday. 40 guests were able to attend and many more sent greetings from around the world. Our Mayor, Councillor Mary Shelldon, and her consort were also in attendance to share in the celebrations, assisting in cutting the birthday cake and drawing the raffle. Local businesses had kindly contributed to the raffle prizes and the party fare, and the current guides had made 100 cup cakes for the event as part of their Centenary Challenge, as well as ensuring the party was as eco-friendly as possible. Past and present guides shared their experiences of

guiding and old photos were shared. Current Guides learned some “new” games and enjoyed seeing the old uniforms, and also learning that even 60 years ago, guiding was fun and offered chances to do things they enjoy doing now, like camping (even if the tents have changed a bit)! The Current guides are continuing their celebrations into the New Year and would welcome further memories from past guides & leaders and also new Guides to join them in the celebrations– as they said, “we’re only 100 once!” They have also designed Centenary badges to mark the occasion which are available to current & former members of the unit. COBHAM CEDAR CLUB W.I. From Anne Yeates January 2020 and it’s Happy Birthday to us! Cobham Cedar Club is 30 this year – we were born in early 1990, and adopted the name Cedar Club in the September to signify growth. And grow we did. Our first meetings were held in the Old Bear pub opposite the Mill, a revolutionary venue at the time which raised eyebrows at Surrey Federation WI, but burgeoning membership eventually moved us to our current home in Church Gate House. So it is going to be a year of celebration, on top of all our usual activities. Our speaker this month will be Patricia Mitchinson, who will be telling us about ‘The changing world of broadcast media’. Also at the January meeting we shall be considering the proposed campaigns from National Federation WI. Every WI in England and Wales votes on the causes it considers most pressing, and behind which it would most like the WI as a whole to throw its considerable weight. In the past its endorsement and involvement has made a real difference to campaigns such as the Care Not Custody Coalition and An End to Plastic Soup. This year, the options range from resolutions to end modern slavery to increasing stem cell registration. Making our choice usually involves some lively debate! Our regular activity clubs – including mah-jong, bridge, book and of course lunch clubs – will be starting again, as will our programme of outings and special interest workshops. Our 2020 membership list opens this month, so do come and visit and receive a Cobham Cedar Club welcome. See our website, www.cobhamcedarclubwi.uk, for details.

POEM CORNER ALL THOSE HEALTHY ADVERTS Do you, like me, think it must be our age That makes us groan as turning page after page We find magazines full of “kindly” advice As how we can “improve” our way of life! I think I’m really not alone In being fed up and having a moan About all the ads I read and see Aimed at the person I thought was me! It’s good to be interested in fashion and health, But not to the exclusion of everything else. With flowing hair and parted lips, These willowy women keep handing out tips On what to eat? On what to wear? Change the make-up? Change the hair? Why not follow this fitness regime? And don’t forget the vitamin cream! You are what you eat and your clothes define The image you present, in person, – or on line But losing sight of your original self Could cause stress and be bad for your health. TV and articles state all you need to know About your body, from head to toe, But how do you check on this and that, As to what is false and what is fact? And when you find a true picture, as that’s what you’re after, Along comes a survey - and changes the data!! Glance in the mirror, pause and reflect, Has all the effort had the desired effect?? If not, one piece of advice may hold the key, “Why not go for a walk?” – and do it for free!

Goodbye Windows 7 Without meaning to sound like a scratched record… On January 14th 2020 Microsoft will officially end extended support of Windows 7. Yes very soon now Windows 7 will not receive any software support or updates. But what does this actually mean for you? In very simple terms, it means that your Windows 7 device will become less and less useful if you use the device for any internet connected activity. For example, if you use the machine for online banking, your bank will stop you gaining access to your online accounts, as they view your computer as being a security risk to their systems. Bit by bit this will become widespread and most online shopping systems will block your ability to carry out transactions with them for the same reason. We are not saying your machine will suddenly stop working on the 14 January. Your files and photos will still be accessible, the machine will power on as before, but you will be at greater risk to security breaches, and your ability to communicate and collaborate with others will be much reduced.
What can you do about this?
1: Upgrade the software on your machine to Windows 10 (the worlds most used operating system). This does carry a cost of £130 for the software alone, and your machine may not be designed to work efficiently with Windows 10. Typically we find machines older than 5 years of age are best replaced, rather than being upgraded Or 2: Replace your computer with a new Windows 10 machine. With costs as low as £250 for new machines this is probably the most economical route and you get a brand new, up to date machine, with a full warranty. We can transfer all your data from the old to the new machine and ensure the new machine is ready for the years ahead, with minimal disruption for you. Beat the rush - act now

Book Reviews JANUARY 2020 ‘Heaven My Home’ by Attica Locke (Hardback £14.99) Heaven my home is an interesting read. It is a mystery but so much more. Filled with a variety of characters and a descriptive narrative this book is both a study of racial prejudice as well as a story of a man grappling with a moral dilemma fuelled, in part, by his complex relationships with his mother, his wife and friends and the uncles who raised him.
‘finding a balanced connection’ by John-Paul Davies (Paperback £12.99) This is an excellent book for all those who feel like they are suffering with anxiety and depression and would like a bit of extra support in their lives. The beginning of the book deals with the here and now in a straightforward and practical way. The rest of the book concentrates on giving core principles on how to move on with problems. John-Paul Davies is an experienced counsellor, life coach and psychotherapist based in Cobham.
‘Cruel Acts’ by Jane Casey (Paperback £7.99) Leo Stone is sentenced to life without parole but gets off on a technicality; jurors researching him online! He is set for re-trial and Maeve Kerrigan and Josh Derwent are tasked with re-investigating the case thoroughly, and they discover new evidence. The plot is twisty but never impenetrable, and the characters and their relationships are complex and believable. This is the 8th book in the Maeve Kerrigan series but can easily be read as a stand-alone title. A great crime thriller for this dark and damp time of year.

Volkswagen UP CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY
As urban living closes in and its restrictions on movement tighten up, the urgent need for ease of movement is more intense and frustrating than ever. And that calls for a rescue, a competent means to master the growing restrictions that are making our day-to-day lives such a hardship. The answer, I promise, comes in the petite shape and practicality of a city car that can satisfy all the needs and defy the demands and pressures of our crowdedout conditions. And it is a case of Up and at ‘Em. Volkswagen’s painstakingly developed city car, as worthy a transport benefit as you can get, cheap and cheerful. Namely the Up.... It is to my mind the finest all-rounder and value-formoney motor you could enjoy in the well-populated city car class, a fine tribute to the superb German company’s efforts to give us ease of travel where it is most needed. The irritating nose-to-tail crawls in endless jams are eased by the Up’s simplicity of a drive with its light steering and dead easy straightforward controls. It is such a comfy and cosy and versatile carrier of the tallest of leggy drivers any journey, around town or on a longer motorway trek, can be no bother. The cabin itself is airy and generously proportioned
offering an atmosphere in which you may relax whatever the snail pace surroundings. It is so cleverly and thoughtfully designed the back-seat passengers, too, may sit back and take in the views without feeling cramped. It is kind to the purse and wallet, too.Running costs are attractively modest...with fuel thirst running at around 60 mpg. The car was facelifted from 2016 with new colours on the outside and with its innards offering even more technical advances and functional infotainment. Top of the list of improvements comes in the form of a brand new turbo petrol engine which boosts it pep and leaves rivals like the Skoda Citigo and Seat in its wake. It offers a temptingly tasty choice of four petrol options... either a 60bhp or 75bhp non turbo power unit or a 90bhp or 1115bhp turbo version. Which ever one appeals they share the same buzzing and throaty response to the demands of your right foot. Overall this small and affordable little beauty, a real all-rounder that defies any attacks on its prospects, is Up,Up and Away among the vast array of city car challengers. And just the job for a first time owner hunting down a bargain. Specficiation: Price range £9,825 - £25,640. My choice: 1.0T 115 BHP GTI three door costing £14,315. Mpg 58.9. Speed - 0-62 in 8.8 secs.

PITCH PERFECT £1.2 million AstroTurf investment increases student and community sports participation at ACS International School Cobham
ACS International School Cobham has invested £1.2 million in an impressive 91.36m x 65.5m all-weather sports surface, suitable for a range of activities including football, rugby and athletics. Replacing its former grass pitch, the new state-of-the-art FIFA-accredited, World Rugby-accredited AstroTurf will ensure that students can compete on the finest pitch surface throughout the changing seasons. The ACS Cobham pitch also meets FA requirements for competitive games, which means it will be a huge draw for inter-school competition. Not only will ACS enjoy a range of matches as part of the Independent Schools Championships, but the facilties will also attract competition from a number of international and local schools, giving students the chance to hone their skills in a competitive environment. The sports surface will also enable ACS students to train for prestigious international competitions overseas. Students in Grade 4/5 and 6/7 teams are representing ACS – and England - in football, track and swimming at the World School Games in Dubai in January 2020 and have started training on the pitch. ACS Cobham is one of the few schools that offers football and rugby training to girls from Grade 1 (age 6-7) and the entire student body from Grade 1-12 are looking forward to using the surface
for a variety of sports. The addition of the AstroTurf also extends extra-curricular club, leisure and team practice times after classes, over weekends and holidays, and is available for community groups to use. A set of 18-metre tall telescopic floodlights have been installed so that the pitch can be used until 9pm during autumn and winter seasons, allowing teams to best utilise their free time for training. The official launch of the AstroTurf took place at the Power of Four Cup on 29 November, an under-18 varsity football tournament, where ACS Cobham players were competing with their colleagues from ACS Egham, ACS Hillingdon and ACS Doha, who had made the journey to Surrey from Qatar. The Cobham Cougars went on to win the cup. The installation of this multi-use sports surface was part of a wider investment at ACS Cobham, where a fund of £1.1 million has been recently announced for the bursary scheme for the academic year 2020/21. All bursaries are awarded on a means-tested basis and, dependent on each student’s individual circumstances, range from ten per cent to 100 per cent of the schools’ fees. Interested families and students can find out more about how to apply for an ACS bursary, the school’s international curriculum or attending an open day by visiting www.acs-schools.com.
