year has in store for us all… For all you creative people, don’t miss ‘Crafting Live’ at Sandown this month. A small amount of your time can provide a huge benefit to others The Esher & Claygate Car Service drives people without transport to their medical appointments & is always looking for more volunteers to help it with this valuable service. If you can spare as little as an hour or two a month, hold a clean driving licence, have the use of a car, you could help people in your local community. Our volunteers take Esher and Claygate residents, mostly elderly, to medical appointments at GP surgeries, dentists, opticians, physiotherapists, podiatrists and nearby hospitals.
Hugely rewarding and very interesting, if you would like to find out more; Call us on: 07501 029 237 or email us at: ec.carservice@gmail.com

I enjoyed meeting Mohammed Bahar Uddin recently, he is the owner of Esher Tandoori. And while the restaurant is loved locally for their delicious food and friendly service, it has another, probably unknown reason, for us to appreciate them and the good work they do locally. An established member of the community in Esher and the surrounding area for a decade now, the family-run business also pride themselves on their involvement with many local groups and organisations. Mr Uddin, helps to organise a number of donations to good causes in the area. These include donations of food to parish churches and financial donations to the community centre in Claygate. "We like to help and support our local community, it's at the heart of our business ethos he says. "Every year we give free food to the near-by church (the restaurant is in-fact on Church Street in Esher) As well as

providing meals for the local fire brigades in Esher, Waltonon-Thames and Cobham. "They're all local brigades and I've made an offer to feed them all on Christmas Eve as thanks for the service they provide to the community. What a lovely gesture. "We also support Cobham and Esher Rugby Clubs and the Metropolitan Police who work out of the station at Imber Court," The list goes on, and Mr Uddin said that Esher Tandoori hoped to distribute a selection of their dishes to many in the area who could benefit from a good hot meal this winter. I think this shows a real commitment to the community. We should be proud to support Esher Tandoori! So next time you fancy a curry why not give them a call as a way of returning support and gratitude. It was lovely to meet you and your staff Mr Uddin, and Look Local wish you all the very best in 2020.

A NEW VIEW: Contemporary Art Exhibition 10 – 16 February 2020 Denbies Wine Estate, Dorking
Summer Sunrise - Marie Davey Photography
Following an incredibly successful first show last year, six local artists are returning to Denbies wine estate for their second exhibition entitled ‘A New View’. The exhibition brings together the artists’ unique view of the landscape around them, showcasing each of their distinctive styles across different media, but with the common theme of a love for nature.

Goodbye Windows 7 Without meaning to sound like a scratched record… On January 14th 2020 Microsoft will officially end extended support of Windows 7. Yes very soon now Windows 7 will not receive any software support or updates. But what does this actually mean for you? In very simple terms, it means that your Windows 7 device will become less and less useful if you use the device for any internet connected activity. For example, if you use the machine for online banking, your bank will stop you gaining access to your online accounts, as they view your computer as being a security risk to their systems. Bit by bit this will become widespread and most online shopping systems will block your ability to carry out transactions with them for the same reason. We are not saying your machine will suddenly stop working on the 14 January. Your files and photos will still be accessible, the machine will power on as before, but you will be at greater risk to security breaches, and your ability to communicate and collaborate with others will be much reduced.
What can you do about this?
1: Upgrade the software on your machine to Windows 10 (the worlds most used operating system). This does carry a cost of £130 for the software alone, and your machine may not be designed to work efficiently with Windows 10. Typically we find machines older than 5 years of age are best replaced, rather than being upgraded Or 2: Replace your computer with a new Windows 10 machine. With costs as low as £250 for new machines this is probably the most economical route and you get a brand new, up to date machine, with a full warranty. We can transfer all your data from the old to the new machine and ensure the new machine is ready for the years ahead, with minimal disruption for you. Beat the rush - act now

Safety in the Garden By Selina Botham
Award winning local garden designer Selina Botham continues to looks at issues of safety in the garden. This month taking a look at paving choices and some important safety consideration. As well as beauty, a garden designer will consider safety too and slipping or tripping on the surface materials can be reduced by careful material choice as well as sensible design. Some materials are worse than others, either slippery or uneven because of the nature of the material. Do choose carefully as I am sure you can imagine, especially in icy January, how important your choice of paving materials will be. The worst issues for slippery surfaces tend to be with decking or with very smooth surfaces like smooth sawn stone or polished concrete. These surfaces should never be laid in north facing positions or where there is heavy shade, since water is more likely to linger and algae is more likely to grow. Algae growth makes surfaces especially slippery, so paving/deck should be regularly cleaned to prevent algea build up. In rain and or ice the risk of slipping will be increased. My advice is to choose a sandblasted finish for a modern look or a more traditional looking riven stone surface as long as your landscaper avoids using heavily riven slabs.
22 Looklocal Magazine - January 2020
Avoid deck except for south facing areas and never use decking right next to your main doors from the house. Surfaces like composite decking get slippery when the boards get worn and because the plastics are impermeable, water can sit on the surface and so can be slippery when wet or icy. Some wooden decking is made slip resistant with inlays of a non slip material and this is the most slip resistant if decking is needed. Porcelain is another impermeable material, so take care to investigate the slip resistance when it is wet. Gravel is slip resistant if it has been laid well, but do avoid bigger smooth stones as they can be unstable and therefore hard to walk on, especially if laid thickly (think Brighton beach!). If you don’t clear fallen leaves, even on a gravel path, the surface will become slippery in wet conditions. The important thing to appreciate is that all paving can get slippery, so regular maintenance is a MUST for any surface. Selina Botham is an award winning garden designer based in Claygate. If you would like to improve and make the best of your garden and need some professional help contact Selina for an initial garden consultation on 07894 553 202 or see her web site for further ideas www.designsforallseasons.co.uk and her facebook page Selina Botham – Designs for all Seasons.
Head teacher mounts silent appeal
Pupils at a Walton school were tickled to discover their head teacher had vowed to remain silent for a day - and then the fun began. The attempt by Shellie Bradford to keep schtum from the morning bell to going home time was “harder than I imagined” she said. Even her mum doubted she could do it. With pupils trying to trick her into responding, and colleagues resolutely not speaking to her, she said it was agony at times. Shellie maintained her sponsored silence to raise funds for Princess Alice Hospice, a place she had initially been reluctant to visit – until it changed her outlook on life and death. “I never shut up,” she said. “I love talking, I knew it would be hard but didn’t quite appreciate just how hard! All the children (staff and parents too) thought it was highly amusing, the thought of me staying quiet all day. My mum had no faith in my whatsoever!” Her vow of silence raised a fantastic £821.99 and a big cheer from the pupils. Her imaginative fundraiser was inspired by her visits to the Hospice over the years. She said: “I’ve been visiting Princess Alice Hospice for a few years now, sometimes face painting at the summer fete and enjoying the festivities at the Christmas fair. If I’m
honest I’d always felt really apprehensive about going in there, but this year, over the holidays I spent some time there visiting a friend, keeping her company, while her dad was there. As I spent more time at Princess Alice Hospice, I became calm and found a real sense of peace there. Everyone’s so welcoming and kind and I could see families around me being supported but given time and ‘normality’ in a really hard time. “One afternoon when I was there, I saw a huge family in grief after losing someone a few moments before; at that moment I turned to my friend and said: ‘Do you know, one thing that has come from me visiting here, is that I no longer fear death.’ It was an overwhelmingly calm feeling. That is why I felt such a need to show my support.” Her sterling efforts lasted 10 hours - from the moment she woke up at 6am, until 4pm. She said: “We had full on lessons in the morning, maths, English and so on. I did a lot of writing messages on a whiteboard and signing, facial expressions too. The afternoon was my planning and prep time but that was just as hard because none of the staff would talk to me in the office. I actually felt quite lonely and a little sad. It made me feel how isolating it must feel for people who are unable to communicate.”

Volkswagen UP CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY
As urban living closes in and its restrictions on movement tighten up, the urgent need for ease of movement is more intense and frustrating than ever. And that calls for a rescue, a competent means to master the growing restrictions that are making our day-to-day lives such a hardship. The answer, I promise, comes in the petite shape and practicality of a city car that can satisfy all the needs and defy the demands and pressures of our crowdedout conditions. And it is a case of Up and at ‘Em. Volkswagen’s painstakingly developed city car, as worthy a transport benefit as you can get, cheap and cheerful. Namely the Up.... It is to my mind the finest all-rounder and value-formoney motor you could enjoy in the well-populated city car class, a fine tribute to the superb German company’s efforts to give us ease of travel where it is most needed. The irritating nose-to-tail crawls in endless jams are eased by the Up’s simplicity of a drive with its light steering and dead easy straightforward controls. It is such a comfy and cosy and versatile carrier of the tallest of leggy drivers any journey, around town or on a longer motorway trek, can be no bother. The cabin itself is airy and generously proportioned

offering an atmosphere in which you may relax whatever the snail pace surroundings. It is so cleverly and thoughtfully designed the back-seat passengers, too, may sit back and take in the views without feeling cramped. It is kind to the purse and wallet, too.Running costs are attractively modest...with fuel thirst running at around 60 mpg. The car was facelifted from 2016 with new colours on the outside and with its innards offering even more technical advances and functional infotainment. Top of the list of improvements comes in the form of a brand new turbo petrol engine which boosts it pep and leaves rivals like the Skoda Citigo and Seat in its wake. It offers a temptingly tasty choice of four petrol options... either a 60bhp or 75bhp non turbo power unit or a 90bhp or 1115bhp turbo version. Which ever one appeals they share the same buzzing and throaty response to the demands of your right foot. Overall this small and affordable little beauty, a real all-rounder that defies any attacks on its prospects, is Up,Up and Away among the vast array of city car challengers. And just the job for a first time owner hunting down a bargain. Specficiation: Price range £9,825 - £25,640. My choice: 1.0T 115 BHP GTI three door costing £14,315. Mpg 58.9. Speed - 0-62 in 8.8 secs.

ESHER LIBRARY
It’s a new year so why not use your local library to help you learn a new skill? We have a fantastic selection of books to help you learn to cook, to garden, to speak a new language, to try a huge variety of crafts or to paint or draw, and many other interesting topics. Remember your membership at Esher Library enables you to use the libraries all across Surrey - so if the book you want isn’t at Esher, it can be reserved for you to collect here (for a small fee) or you can visit the other libraries and browse their selections (free of charge). Any books you borrow in this way can conveniently be dropped off here at Esher for us to send back to their home branch. In addition to all our lovely books, being a library member entitles you to access a world of resources across the internet; free newspapers, an impressive variety of magazines and periodicals, Find Your Past/ Ancestry (in libraries) and much more. We have several regular free activities for children. Rhymetime for the under 5’s 10am Wednesday and Thursday, 10.30am Saturday and Storytime for over 5’s at 3.45pm Thursday. No need to book, just come along and join in the fun. We are delighted to welcome local author Malcolm Duffy to Esher Library on Saturday 8 February. Malcom will be reading an extract from his new book ‘Sofa Surfer.’ This is a first for Esher, Sofa Surfer is aimed at Young Adults so please encourage those of a certain age to come along & support Malcolm & the library. However, it’s not an exclusive event so come along & enjoy listening whatever your age. Another local author, Mark Bisson, will be coming to Esher in the near future to read from and talk about his book, ‘The cat who lost his confidence.’ As the book’s theme is children’s positive mental health, we are hoping to incorporate discussions/workshops with parents. Again, this is something new for us at Esher to organise. Please express any interest in this event to any member of staff and keep an eye out for further details both in the library and on our website. We are always looking for events to encourage new members to the library and add value to existing members. To this effect we organised a Story time for adults on Friday 6 December at 10.30am. This was a free event, we invited anyone to come along and listen to extracts from books with a Christmas theme. These were read by members of staff and a volunteer. We ran the event last year, with a disappointing attendance, which we put down to the frightful weather. This year we only had one person attend, who just happened to be in the library. Perhaps we are holding this event on the wrong day or at the wrong time. It is disheartening for people who have put effort into choosing a passage to read and then practising reading it out loud. We are looking for feedback!! We would like to have this as a monthly event so if you are interested please make any comments regarding time and day to the Esher staff. It would be lovely to hold a regular event for adults!!
Wishing you health and happiness for 2020. ESHER LIBRARY: Old Church Path, Esher KT10 9NS. Situated next to the Elmbridge Civic Centre car park, which is pay and display. OPENING HOURS: Tuesday - Friday: 9.30am - 5.00pm | Saturday: 9.30am - 5.00pm | Monday & Sunday: CLOSED

PITCH PERFECT £1.2 million AstroTurf investment increases student and community sports participation at ACS International School Cobham
ACS International School Cobham has invested £1.2 million in an impressive 91.36m x 65.5m all-weather sports surface, suitable for a range of activities including football, rugby and athletics. Replacing its former grass pitch, the new state-of-the-art FIFA-accredited, World Rugby-accredited AstroTurf will ensure that students can compete on the finest pitch surface throughout the changing seasons. The ACS Cobham pitch also meets FA requirements for competitive games, which means it will be a huge draw for inter-school competition. Not only will ACS enjoy a range of matches as part of the Independent Schools Championships, but the facilties will also attract competition from a number of international and local schools, giving students the chance to hone their skills in a competitive environment. The sports surface will also enable ACS students to train for prestigious international competitions overseas. Students in Grade 4/5 and 6/7 teams are representing ACS – and England - in football, track and swimming at the World School Games in Dubai in January 2020 and have started training on the pitch. ACS Cobham is one of the few schools that offers football and rugby training to girls from Grade 1 (age 6-7) and the entire student body from Grade 1-12 are looking forward to using the surface
for a variety of sports. The addition of the AstroTurf also extends extra-curricular club, leisure and team practice times after classes, over weekends and holidays, and is available for community groups to use. A set of 18-metre tall telescopic floodlights have been installed so that the pitch can be used until 9pm during autumn and winter seasons, allowing teams to best utilise their free time for training. The official launch of the AstroTurf took place at the Power of Four Cup on 29 November, an under-18 varsity football tournament, where ACS Cobham players were competing with their colleagues from ACS Egham, ACS Hillingdon and ACS Doha, who had made the journey to Surrey from Qatar. The Cobham Cougars went on to win the cup. The installation of this multi-use sports surface was part of a wider investment at ACS Cobham, where a fund of £1.1 million has been recently announced for the bursary scheme for the academic year 2020/21. All bursaries are awarded on a means-tested basis and, dependent on each student’s individual circumstances, range from ten per cent to 100 per cent of the schools’ fees. Interested families and students can find out more about how to apply for an ACS bursary, the school’s international curriculum or attending an open day by visiting www.acs-schools.com.
