OCTOBER ISSUE It’s that time of year again, when our summer clothes are put away for their winter break and out come the winter woolies again. Although, as I write this, it is still remarkably mild and my washing is drying in the warm autumn breeze outside. So actually, it’s really rather pleasant! Congratulations must go to the Elmbridge Talking Newspaper who wiped the floor clean at a recent awards ceremony event! Such a wonderful service which really deserves this recognition. See pages 20/1 to find out all about it. Also this month, we hear about a wonderful choir festival in which Earthly Voices, the Esher-based community choir, will be performing. In addition, we hear from Selina, our lovely gardening writer, who tells us all about her garden at the Hampton Court Flower Show. Bruce’s Doggie Day Care enjoyed their annual open day. It was an action-packed event and what a cute bunch of clients Bruce has! (I mean the dogs, not the owners, by the way!) We are delighted to share some highlights with you within. And finally, we have a little local history for you to enjoy, a sad little tale, telling the story behind one of our well-loved local gardens. Thanks must go to Natasha Hicks for this delightful contribution.

n 15th September representatives of Elmbridge and Runnymede Talking Newspaper were delighted to attend the Runnymede Achievement Awards Evening, organised by Runnymede Access Liaison Group. The awards were introduced by Chairman, Jonathan Fisher, who is blind and has a guide dog, and the evening was
well attended by disabled and able-bodied representatives of the many organisations offering services and advice to disabled people in the area. The Charles Babbage Memorial Rosebowl for individual achievement by a disabled person was awarded to Christopher Gilroy, who first joined the Talking Newspaper as Listener Representative in 1999 and was Chairman elected by acclamation at
the Annual General Meeting in 2007. The Frank Wheeler Memorial Rosebowl was awarded to Mrs. Edna Blowers, who has stood down as a volunteer with the Talking Newspaper after 15 years. During this time, she selected articles from the local papers for the weekly digest and took over the leadership of the registration team, which checks and records the returned pouches from
listeners. The Bob Davies Award for achievement by a group or service in serving the needs of Disabled People was presented to Elmbridge and Runnymede Talking Newspaper in recognition of its long service to visually impaired people in the Borough. Elmbridge and Runnymede Talking Newspaper is one of the oldest in the country, having been launched in 1975. It is funded by the local Rotary Clubs, produced by volunteers
and distributed free of charge to some 120 listeners in the two boroughs. It has been sending recorded digests of the weekly local news throughout 39 years and also produces a monthly magazine edition of items of specific interest to visually impaired people, plus interviews with local celebrities. In November of this year, its 2,00Oth edition will be sent to its many listeners in both boroughs. If you or someone you know has difficulty reading and misses the local news, please
telephone our helpline on
017 8 4 4 3 5 6 2 2 to find out more about receiving the weekly Talking Newspaper recordings. This is also the number to ring if you would like to join the volunteers - there is something going on in our studio most days of the week.

The sun shone and dogs and owners had great fun on Saturday (13 September) at the annual Bruce’s Doggy Day Care Open Day. Based in Cobham and serving customers in Surrey and London, award-winning dog crèche business, Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, caters for dogs large and small from Bookham and Balham to Walton, Weybridge and Wimbledon. The invitation-only client event was held at its purpose-built 15-acre site, giving customers the chance to see the fields their beloved pets play in and meet the staff who look after them. As well as doggy antics and agility activities, the event raised money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Sponsor a Puppy initiative, with several of their puppies and trainers on site. Refreshments were also available for hungry hounds and humans, including dog treats, cute cupcakes and a barbecue. Bruce Casalis, founder and director of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, said: “It was a fantastic day and I’d like to thank our

O P E N DAY four-legged and two-legged friends for coming along to share the fun. Our customers are very important to us, and we continually strive to provide an excellent dog care service for them all, as was evidenced by our recent feedback survey which showed 95% of our customers are very satisfied with our service, and 100% are satisfied with our reliability and quality of staff. Great news!” Bruce added: “I’m also pleased we were able to raise the profile
of the Guide Dogs charity and generate much-needed funds for them. Every little helps and enables them to assist a blind person in gaining the freedom and independence a canine friend can bring.” 2014 has been quite a year for Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, having celebrated its fifth birthday, won a Best Small Business award and expanded its services and geographic reach to include dog home boarding and the Waltonon-Thames area.

EARTHLY
Esher-based community choir, Earthly Voices, will be performing in the Carshalton Choir Festival, at All Saints’ Church on Saturday 4th October at 7 pm. Six diverse choirs will be performing throughout the evening, including a Gospel Choir and the Impromptu Ladies Choir, which was the runner-up in a previous Radio 3 Choir of the Year competition. So this is a great opportunity to sample a variety of good quality local choirs. For tickets (which are £8), contact Julia Cripps on 0208 941 5853 Earthly Voices’ Musical Director is the Salisbury-based composer, conductor and singer, Jeremy Avis, who has spent the summer working in the Dzaleka UNHCR refugee camp in Malawi. He delivered a British
described the event as follows: ‘It was quite the brilliant sight, as hundreds of people from the refugee camp, Lilongwe and the surrounding communities eagerly turned up, waiting to witness the combination of music, drama, dance and football. After a month of rehearsals, the first scene was enacted on stage, a live football match spiced up with songs which echoed in the ears of the attentive audience. Supporters from either side chanted songs in support of their team’s efforts. What an amazing way to end what has been a very busy month, the hundreds of smiles and joy that radiated at the event were indeed rewarding’. Earthly Voices choir sings a broad
Council-supported arts project to promote social inclusion within the camp and with local Malawians. The refugee camp contains around 20,000 displaced Africans from difference countries, and therefore violent conflict can erupt between the different tribal groups. Inspired by Africa’s love of Premiership football and music, Jeremy and his business partner, Rebecca Askew, have written a musical called Goalmouth, based on a fantasy football match and involving a large number of performers, which requires them to rehearse and perform together. Several Surrey-based Premiership footballers also helped out by donating kit for the performers. The performance was held on August 30th and a representative of the British Council, Malawi
repertoire of songs, including classical, world music, jazz and contemporary. All proceeds from its concerts go to charity, and over the years, it has raised thousands of pounds for many good causes, including Carers Support Elmbridge, Street Child Africa, Changing Faces, Water Aid, The Friends of St Paul’s (St Paul’s Church) East Molesey, St Mary’s Church East Molesey and the Princess Alice Hospice. The choir is actively seeking new members. No audition is required, just a love of singing! To book a taster session or for more information, contact Jackie Porter on:

STATE PENSION SOON?
Advice and things you need to know
from accountants SMITH PEARMAN
A series of articles discussing various areas of current legislation Putting off taking your State Pension The state pension starts at ages varying from 60 to 68 depending on your date of birth and whether you are male or female. Even though this is often much older than we thought when we started working, for many of us it is still earlier than the date we can afford to stop working. Instead of taking the state pension at the official state retirement age you can defer your state pension and not take it until you want to – normally when you stop working. This is particularly useful for those who would be pushed into a higher tax bracket by receiving the state pension on top of their earnings. When you start to take your deferred state pension you have a choice – you can have an increased pension or you can take a lump sum. The increased pension will be taxed in the same way as any other income, but the lump sum has special rules: • Unlike pension lump sums from other pension schemes it is taxable; • It is not simply treated as income; • It has its own income tax charge worked out at your highest tax rate.
These rules are designed to ensure that the lump sum doesn’t take a basic rate taxpayer into higher-rate tax just because they have received the lump sum. However, you can do better than that. If you have stopped working and have little other income, it is possible that your total income in the tax year might be less than the personal allowance (currently £10,000). This is easier to arrange if your state pension is taken late in the tax year (say February or March) so that there is little state pension to include. If your total income for the year is less than the personal allowance, you do not pay income tax. Your highest rate of tax is zero and this is what is charged on the lump sum. You have to be very careful with this as total income of £10,000 this year means no tax on a lump sum taken this year, but total income of £10,001 means tax of 20% on the lump sum. There are a lot of other considerations to take into account when considering deferring or taking your state pension over and above the tax ones, including complications that can arise if you are unlucky enough to die before taking the deferred pension, but the tax opportunity (literally ‘once in a lifetime’) should not be ignored. Smith Pearman will be happy to help you, but please contact us as soon as possible if you would like us to help!

CAR REVIEW
AUDI RS 6 and offers a return for your right foot pressure of mind-blowing magnitude, hitting 62 mph from standstill in under four seconds, and for the size of it, that is some special return. But Audi has been clever with the RS 6. Extra specially so. It has lightened the load compared with its dismally dull Avant predecessors. Nowadays, bearing in mind its size, you get excellent economy too, and an environmentally sympathetic and more sterile whiff of pollution from a power unit built to satisfy in every sense. The cabin is spacious, and even the longestlegged like me, whether behind the wheel or the driver, may stretch with uncramped ease. As for carrying a family...well...mum and the teenage
sextuplets are suitably housed. Switch on the engine and, hey presto, a wafer-thin touch screen appears as if by magic in the dead centre of a fascia designed for ease of study and utter convenience. And the whole plot handles superbly well, however daring you are in your arrival at corners. On the open road, having chosen the topmost of the paddle-shift operations and hitting the revs really hard, you remain in a comfort zone ...safe and sound. Would I buy one? Despite my lack of affection for estate cars, and Trophy Wife’s preference for Porsche sports cars, I could well be tempted. In the light of my sincere appraisal, maybe Milton Keynes-based Audi will now forgive my original sin. Whatever it was... ends. Specification: RS 6 - Engine 4.0-litre V8. Power 552 bhp. Transmission 8-speed tiptronic. Fuel consumption 28.8 mpg.Top speed 155mph & 0-62 in 3.9 secs. Price £75,500.
By Ted Macauley
I still don’t know why or how, and they never bothered to explain, but Audi fell out with me about a decade ago and banned me from their review car service. Was it something I wrote? Was I too honest and critical of one of their cars? I guess so. Thankfully, with a wee bit of jiggery-pokery, there are alternatives means of getting my hands on their products. And, just to show there are no hard feelings, at least on my part, I would commend their latest Avant, a thriller of a five-star performer. The new RS 6 is an estate car to both excite, entertain and proudly stand its ground in a fiercely competitive arena of wellestablished rivals. Its RS tag - Rally Sport - could stand for “Really Special”. And that coming from me is rare praise because I am not a fan of family estate cars. They are too often too unwieldy, vast lolloping, shaking, shivering examples of clumsiness on the move, and little short of vanlike looks. Not the RS 6. It is a rare beauty, a winner on first kerb-side sight and a gem of a star fronting a trail of throaty exhaust sound to be envied by any overtaken sports car. The four-litre engine is a growler

IN THE NICK OF TIME
With a little help from L&E (Lofts and Extensions) adding a light-filled extension has breathed new life into the Haughton family’s Twickenham home. And all in the nick of time... With the arrival of their second child imminent, some may say this young couple were mad to embark on a building project but as Alexia Haughton explains, there couldn’t have been
a better time. “A lot of people think going on maternity leave is a bad time to do an extension but actually it’s brilliant. If I was working, it would have been really challenging, but I had time every day to visit suppliers and be here for the builders so things could get done.” The Haughtons had always known their tired 1930s home needed a lift, but with other priorities, it was only in January this year
that they decided to take the plunge. “I was already finding it difficult with just one child, and knowing I would soon be spending loads of time pureeing food and sterilising bottles again, I needed a kitchen that functioned and one I was actually excited about being in,” Alexia remembers. Fulfilling their dream in time for the new baby wasn’t going to be easy though, and after plans were put in place for a single storey extension to the rear of the house, the couple began the process of choosing a builder. At about this time, a friend recommended them to L&E.
“The ultimate thing that stood out was their ‘can do’ attitude,” Alexia recalls. “When
you’re going through this process, there are hurdles to get through, and unlike other builders who made me feel downhearted, every time I spoke to L&E, they made it feel like less of a big deal and gave us the confidence they would just get on with it.” L&E produced a budget and schedule of work to give the Haughtons a clear understanding of the costs and timescales involved. “The proposal was priced well in relation to some of the other builders’ quotes and I liked that L&E actually invited us to look round a recently completed project with the team that was going to do ours. It meant we could meet the foreman and make sure we would get on with him.” Time was critical, and with only eight weeks to go before the arrival of their new baby girl, L&E began the build. New foundations were excavated for the extension and from this point, building work progressed at a rapid pace. “I was so impressed with the hours they work, so no wonder they get it done quicker than most people. On top of that, there’s a decent number
of them,” Alexia comments.
“I can only say just how brilliant our team was. Things of course happen fast, and I enjoyed being able to empower somebody who has the skills and knowledge to make important decisions, so the foreman would discuss things with us and come up with good suggestions which I’d listen to too. I felt like he cared as if it were his own home.” Eight weeks later and in the nick of time, the L&E team completed the build. On the very same day, the Haughton’s baby daughter was born. While Alexia admits there was nothing wrong with the house before, ultimately it was uninspiring. Now, with the extension complete, they have an exciting family home bursting with personality. With the door from the hallway removed, there is a natural light and flow right the way through the house, and with statement lighting over the bar and dining tables, zones define the space. Five months have passed now and Alexia reflects, “I honestly couldn’t be happier.
There’s that moment when you move back into your house and it’s just as you’d hoped and more. I’d use L&E again without a doubt. They were brilliant.”
Mr and Mrs Haughton are so confident recommending L&E (Lofts and Extensions) that they are even happy to show you round their new home. Contact them via L&E to arrange a viewing.

JORDAN’S WILDLIFE
A
ward-winning local garden designer Selina Botham shares the experience of making the Jordan’s Wildlife Garden – RHS Silver medal and People’s Choice Best Show Garden. In just two and a half weeks, 300 m2 of bare earth must be transformed into a show garden. It is then scrutinised by judges, press, and of course the 660,000 show visitors to Hampton Court. For the garden designer, it’s rather like a very public and personal exam, so slightly nerve-racking! Behind the scenes, the planning began months before the design drawings and planting list were submitted to the RHS selection committee in December 2013, and the garden application acceptance was formally received in January. Much of the following months were spent in research and planning, sourcing and coordinating 15 separate deliveries to the site during the two week build, all hopefully on the right day! The pictures below give a snapshot of the steps involved in the build.
The site was huge - 300m2
The 2m high mixed native hedge was lifted into place. Immediately the garden was alive with wildlife.
The trees were carefully unloaded and positioned
The trees and hedge in place - I was happy!

It’s a funny thing about the Blues. Listening to someone else singing about their own hardships can make us feel better about own problems. I discovered the Blues when I arrived on these shores back in ’68. It was a time of the Blues Boom and was a great springboard for artists like Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and even Led Zeppelin. With some great memories in mind, I am delighted to hear that a new wave of guitar slingers is treading the boards up and down the country, and one of the best young prospects is 22 year old Laurence Jones. I went along to the Half Moon pub in Putney recently to see Laurence and was blown away by this phenomenal talent. Remarkably, he started as a classical guitarist and won a Young Musician of the Year Award. Usually, classical players can’t make the transition to rock, but Laurence has not only crossed the wide divide, but he also won the prestigious Young Artist of the Year prize in the British Blues Awards a couple of weeks ago. Despite his age, he’s the foot stompin’ real deal, and if you fancy being energised by a master of his craft and get that life-affirming feeling that great music can bring, just imagine a cross between Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page and that’ll give you some idea of his style. Check him out online or on CD, better yet see him live and catch him while you can: he’s the perfect antidote to all those antiseptic talent shows that fill TV’s prime time. The Blues are alive and rockin’ with Laurence J o n e s . Words by David Kid Jensen
BROADBAND
ANYWHERE With more and more devices requiring internet connection, the original wireless router is having quite a job in keeping up with the demand.
In the home If you require a better wifi signal around your home, we have a variety of solutions perfect for this situation, installable in seconds. One solution is a two part kit, where one bit plugs into your 13 amp mains socket near the router and cable connects to your router, and the second part plugs into any mains socket, usually in the distant part of the property where the internet connection is poor. This re-broadcasts your broadband/ network connection and is highly portable and very convenient. With costs starting at £60.00, it is a very affordable option. Between buildings To link your outbuilding, garden office or studio to your house, we have a perfect solution: by externally mounting a booster antenna on the outside of your house and another on your outbuilding, your wifi and network signal can be boosted for up to 15 kms. Yes, that’s correct, 15Km (so say the manufacturers). We have bridged gaps of 100s of metres trouble-free. The antennas in question cost only £65.00 each, and we can install the units professionally for you. Please call for further information. Satellite broadband Should you live in a poor broadband connection area or require broadband in your motor home or on your boat, we have the answer for you. Satellite broadband offers you connection speed of 20Mb download and upload of 2Mb for a static solution, and 10Mb download/ 256K upload for mobile users , with different systems offering coverage across the UK and Europe. We will handle the supply and installation for you. If you would like more information, contact us. Our opening hours are Mon - Sat 9:00-5:30

W O R K O F LO CA L
COMPOSER TO BE PERFORMED BY KINGS COLLEGE CAMBRIDGE
O
n Sunday 28th September, arguably the best known choir in the world sang at All Saints Weston Green. The choir of King’s College Cambridge performed as part of the 75th anniversary celebrations of All Saints Weston Green which is well known in the local community for its outstanding choral music and exceptional acoustics. Hosting the concert was a particular honour for All Saints, as it is rare for this 40 - strong choir to sing in parish churches. The evening was
also particularly special, as the musical Director of King’s College Choir, Stephen Cleobury, chose to give the first performance of a piece of music composed by the Choirmaster of All Saints Weston Green, Nigel Cassidy. This was a huge tribute to the skills of this young local composer who says it was both an ‘honour and a privilege’ to hear his work - a setting of Psalm 100 Jubilate Deo - performed by the King’s College Choir. Tickets to hear King’s College at All Saints Weston Green on 28th September
were sold out within hours of going on sale and the event was generously sponsored by Killik and Company of Esher. For anyone who would like to hear some of the amazing choral music going on at All Saints Weston Green, then come along to Festival Evensong to be held at 7pm on Sunday 2nd November. Choristers from around the parish will be coming together in a choral Evensong which will include the first public performance of a further composition from Nigel Cassidy.

A LITTLE BIT OF
ELMBRIDGE HISTORY
We always knew there was something spectacular about Elmbridge. The leafy green trimmings and rolling hills define the quaint and tidy borough we know and love. However, the peace and tranquillity found here entranced people long before us, some of whom were members of the most famous and instrumental family in the country. ineteenth century Esher housed members of the Royal Family for many years, and there is little

familial disagreements over their marriage. Charlotte and Leopold honeymooned at the Duke of York’s Oatlands Palace which stands between Weybridge and Walton-on-Thames. Unfortunately, there is little remaining of the old building still present today, as it was eventually bought and demolished, with the bricks being sold to Sir Richard Weston of Sutton Place near Guildford to build locks and bridges on the new River Wey Canal. Other landmarks of the time, such as Nonsuch and Richmond Palaces, were also sold and demolished to pay off debts from the parliament. Only one year after a happy marriage, Charlotte passed away at the age of 21, due to complications in childbirth. Her death caused nationwide devastation as the entire kingdom went into mourning. It has been said that linen-drapers ran out of black cloth as customers flocked to buy mourning attire. Devastated and grief-stricken, her husband
