Remember, Remember, the 5th of November! Firework season is upon us! Much to the horror of many of our beloved pets. Is it just me, or have fireworks become much louder these days? Please be mindful to keep your pets inside during the evenings for a few weeks. Another lovely Amanda Fashions’ event took place recently; their charity of choice this time was the Mole Valley Citizen’s Advice. Amanda, aided by a keen team of volunteering friends and family, presented her fabulous New Season Collection. As always, there was a great turnout. We are happy to share with you our photo’s of the evening. This was a much enjoyed coming together of local ladies in support of a great cause. Congratulations Amanda Fashion on another great event. The near-by Grange Centre for people with disabilities, welcomed their royal patron, HRH The Duke of Gloucester recently for a tour of the site and the official opening of their new Heritage Room, we are delighted to share coverage of his visit. The room documents the history of The School of Stitchery and Lace founded in 1938 before it became The Grange in the 1970s. It’s a very busy time of year for many exciting events; Fireworks displays, Pre-Christmas Fairs, Choral Concerts, a local Food Festival and so on... We have a whole host of events crammed into our pages this month for you to choose from. I hope there is something included for everyone to enjoy. It is also Rep Season at The Leatherhead Theatre, and there are some great productions coming up. I have my tickets at the ready, and I’m really looking forward to seeing the cast perform on my favourite stage; three great productions, all very different, all promise to entertain and enthral. I can’t wait! See inside for details. Panto season will also be here very soon, don’t miss out on this great Christmas time production of Aladdin. We are also delighted to offer you the chance to win tickets! See our November Competition on page 59, a family Panto ticket is up for grabs! I hope you have a good month, until next time, take care…

AMANDA 2018 AUTUMN FASHION SHOW

Fast becoming a hot ticket event, certainly on my calendar, once again Amandas’ held their new season fashion show, in September at the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall. As always this event gave ticket holders the chance to see Amanda’s beautiful range of clothing for the coming season as well as raising money for charity. The monies raised went to the Mole Valley branch of Citizen’s Advice. An amazing charity that supports clients from all walks of life with a broad range of issues, from benefit claims, housing, parking tickets, and so much more. The show was opened by Deborah Jones, the District Manager for Mole Valley Citizen’s Advice (Dorking & Leatherhead branches), two of over 300 branches across the country. The Leatherhead branch opened in 1939 closely followed by the Dorking branch which opened in 1941, in a horse box! The charity depends entirely on local funding, be it local authorities, charitable trusts, local businesses or

private donations. With this, along with their many volunteers, they are able to provide an invaluable service to our local communities. If you think you might be able to help with a donation/fundraising or as a volunteer go to citizensadvicemolevalley.org. uk for more information. Talking of volunteers! Amanda’s invaluable team of friends and family yet again produced a fabulous occasion enjoyed by all. From the models, the behind the scenes team of dressers, including Amanda’s Mum, Amanda’s Dad and brother, who made sure the models got safely onto the runway, it was a fun packed evening. With an interval buffet & a glass of wine it also gave everyone a chance to catch up with friends. Do go and visit Amanda’s in Ashtead and see the fabulous range in store. Hot off the press….an amazing £3200 was raised on the night and a date for your diary - Wednesday 20th March 2019 - Amanda’s Spring fashion show.

WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945

Future Mole Valley • Preparation of Mole Valley District Council’s (MVDC) new Local Plan is proceeding and Surrey County Council (SCC) has been commissioned to develop infrastructure models and plans that will address the level of development in the District over the next 15 years. • Discussions and consultations have been held with residents affected by proposed modest extensions to existing villages across the District. That work has now been completed and will be factored into the Plan. • MVDC is separately looking at the potential for a significant extension to existing rural villages. • Travellers permanently settled in Mole Valley: The provision of Traveller sites must also be factored into the Plan and an additional number of pitches must be identified. That number could be anywhere between 20 & 40 pitches and MVDC is currently looking at a range of sites (of varying sizes, small & larger) which would be suitable as a home base for Travellers who are permanently settled but who leave to travel for a short while and then return. • Travellers passing through and not settled in Mole Valley: Legislation is not clear on the housing provision that Local Authorities are required to make for Travellers who are not settled in a District but who are simply moving through it. The CEOs of Councils throughout Surrey are working together to reach a decision on how to proceed on this but it is likely that a separate piece of work would have to be commissioned to identify the need and size of any provision. That wouldn’t be straightforward because of the difficulty of factoring in the unknown; for example, there could be any number of reasons why, when and for how long, a group of Travellers might be on the road - and, indeed, what size of group that

might be. Clearly, none of us wants to have a repeat of the unauthorised encampment that we experienced this summer in Ashtead but the solution is not as simple as it might at first appear. As a first step, MVDC is planning to install incursion-proof height barriers to replace the concrete blocks that are currently in place. • It’s unlikely that the draft Plan will be ready to go out to public consultation before Spring 2019. If that date is missed, the consultation will be delayed until after next year’s May Council elections. Policing - Sergeant Lisa Wells has recently been appointed as the new sergeant for North Mole Valley and she and her counterpart in South Mole Valley, Sergeant Andy Adams, will be working on developing more engagement with local communities throughout the District. They want to reassure residents that although the front counter at Pippbrook has been closed, the entire Neighbourhood Team is still present there and the plan is to move the Response Team to Pippbrook from Reigate as soon as space and infrastructure permits. Lisa Wells can be contacted via email at lisa. wells@surrey.pnn.police.uk. Parking - On 5th September, the Local Committee (combination of County and District Councillors) signed off on proposals for yellow lines, which, through Cllr Chris Townsend, residents have requested in a various places around Ashtead. All proposals will be going out to consultation with residents and they include yellow lines that will introduce a measure of parking restriction in Woodfield Lane to alleviate the problems that have arisen there this year. Fingers crossed that late spring might see a result - budget and weather permitting! Glynis Peterkin - Chairman

FETCHAM RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION FOR ALL COMMUNITY, INFORMATION, HELP AND SUPPORT VISIT: WWW.FETCHAMRESIDENTS.CO.UK EMAIL: CHAIRMAN@FETCHAMRESIDENTS.CO.UK CAMPSITE PLAN FOR NORBURY PARK - This application for 30 pitches, six ‘glamping’ huts, and parking for 50 cars provoked an enormous response – overwhelmingly against the plans put forward by the Surrey Wildlife Trust. By October more than 180 letters of representation had been received by Mole Valley District Council. The Fetcham Residents Association did not hesitate to add its voice in support of residents who, like us, believed the plans to be ill considered and in contradiction of SWT’s declared mission “restoring nature across our county”. The FRA objected on grounds of inadequate protection of the ancient woodland; inadequate consultation with affected communities and inadequate provision for vehicle access. On October 3rd the application (MO/2018/1374) was stated to be “currently invalid pending receipt of further e

O

ars service to the 0 ye vil r8 la g ve

information” and a decision announced as “No further action”. Whether or not this is the end of the matter, the people of Fetcham’s strong message about this unique landscape has had an impact. FETCHAM UNITED CHARITIES IS 100! Volunteers, supporters and residents of Fetcham United Charities celebrated their centenary year in September. Five Fetcham charities, some with roots in the 17th century, combined in 1918, to maintain the Reading Room and the almshouses, now located in Morley Court. Two of the oldest residents, Madge Fuller, and Isobel Blake, cut a birthday cake, with the Chair of Trustees, David Dufill and the Chair of MVDC, Councillor Raj Haque. CHRISTMAS FAYRE - Preparations are well advanced for what promises to be a very festive afternoon on Saturday December 1st in Fetcham village – please save the date!

Will making – when is pressure “undue influence”? In our specialist Contentious Trusts and Probate team, we are often approached by clients who have concerns that a recently deceased loved one may have been pressurised into making their Will. Is this grounds for challenging the validity of a Will? In short, perhaps - but it is not straightforward. A legal challenge as to the validity of a Will on the basis of excessive pressure by a third party is known as “undue influence”. One of the most succinct definitions of what constitutes “undue influence” came in Hall v Hall, a case from the 1860s. In this case the type of pressure that would be classed as unlawful was described as of such “character if so exerted as to overpower the volition without convincing the judgment of the testator (the person making the Will)… though no force has been either used or threatened”. However, some pressure exerted on a testator is not unlawful. In the Will making process it is not uncommon for testators to consult with others (for example, their children) and for these third parties to try to influence the testator into making a Will in their favour. The key is that the contents of the Will must still reflect the testator’s own freely made decisions. For pressure to be unlawful, we are looking for examples of coercion where the testator is acting contrary to their own free will and choice.

However, having said that, note that a frail testator giving into pressure for a “quiet life” could constitute undue influence. Circumstances are key and different levels of pressure will overpower different individuals. Practically speaking, how common are these claims? Whilst we receive a lot of enquiries about undue influence, one of the first points we like to make is that historically successful claims challenging the validity of a Will on the basis of undue influence are very rare. Whilst the legal concepts are relatively straightforward, the real issue is evidence. The person with the best knowledge of the events is unfortunately dead (i.e. the testator). Whilst we would advise clients to approach undue influence claims with extreme caution, this should not put people off from carrying out investigations if they have suspicions of foul play. There are also linked claims which can be run as an alternative to undue influence and as such, it is always worth seeking a specialist legal opinion if you have concerns regarding a Will.

Be in the Kitchen NOVEMBER RECIPE

QUICKFRIED CHICKEN LIVERS

WITH GARLIC & APPLE CIDER VINEGAR It’s so easy to forget about delicious chicken livers. They are so fast to cook, so flavoursome and so nutritionally amazing! Here’s a very speedy recipe to get them back into your kitchens. I quickly wilt some spinach in the hot pan, while the livers are resting for a moment after cooking, to enjoy with them.

INGREDIENTS SERVES 2

225g organic chicken livers Salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 tbsp coconut oil 1 large clove garlic, crushed 3 tbsp apple cider vinegar 3 tbsp water 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

METHOD 1. Rinse the livers in a sieve under a cold tap, then pat dry on kitchen paper. Check the livers and remove any membranes etc. Cut larger pieces in half. Season well with salt and pepper. 2. Heat the coconut oil in a large frying pan. When hot, toss in the livers and leave for about a minute or until browned on the underside (this will depend on size of pieces). Do not move the liver till it has browned! 3. Turn the liver over and cook for another minute or until the pieces feel ‘just’ firm – but still pink in the middle. Add the garlic, stir for a few seconds then transfer the liver to warm plates. 4. Pour in the apple cider vinegar, water and extra virgin olive oil, let it bubble away for a moment to reduce and stir to remove any sediment from the bottom of the pan. Pour the juices over the liver and enjoy!

DECADE AT DOGGY DAY CARE FOR D’ARTAGNAN D’Artagnan the Welsh springer spaniel is celebrating 10 years as a canine customer at Bruce’s Doggy Day Care. The Surrey and London business began as a dog walking service on Clapham Common in London in October 2008. Founder Bruce Casalis recognised a gap in the market for busy dog owners and D’Artagnan was his first client. Ten years on, the two are still firm friends! D’Artagnan is now 10½ years old and lives in Wandsworth, London, with his owner Amanda Williams. He attends day care twice a week, when he’s collected in a chauffeur driven doggy bus and taken to the Bruce’s Doggy Day Care 25-acre Cobham site in Surrey. In recognition of his 10 year anniversary, the team has introduced a Bruce’s Doggy Day Care Walk of Fame

(#BrucesWalkofFame) with D’Artagnan as its first honorary member. The sprightly spaniel’s paw has been set in stone for all to see! Amanda Williams, D’Artagnan’s owner, commented: “It’s such an honour and I know he’s very proud. D’Artagnan thoroughly enjoys his time at Bruce’s Doggy Day Care and cannot wait to spend the day with his friends. He loves the socialisation and mental stimulation which has helped keep him active, curious and sociable. And I’m reassured by the wonderful team and safe and supervised environment.” Some fun facts from D’Artagnan’s doggy day care decade: * He’s clocked up 1,000 days * He’s enjoyed 8,000 hrs of play * He’s had 260 baths * He’s consumed 500 treats * He’s drunk 1,300 litres of water * He’s received 2,000 cuddles

PETS AND GARDENS BY SELINA BOTHAM

Selina Botham of Designs for all Seasons shares a few tips for accomodating the needs of pets within a beautifully designed garden. People love their pets and it’s important that a new garden meets the needs of the whole household. Cats are easy really and don’t effect the garden design except to perhaps include cat mint within the garden. Cats love to roll in and eat this plant. Rabbit runs can be accommodated to the side of a garden, tucked behind a swath of planting. Rabbit cages are best in the side passage way nice and close to the back door so there are fewer excuses from the children for feeding them. Dogs are a bit more challenging and the biggest problem I find is wee on the lawn which creates unsightly patches on your beautiful new lawn! The best solution seems to be to have an area in the garden, which is out of sight, where the dog is trained to relieve itself. This works perfectly but needs a well trained pooch. In two other gardens I have designed a separate gated area of the garden where the dog can be kept

28 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - November 2018

when the client doesn’t want them roaming round the garden unsupervised. As far as planting design goes, by using tough plants there are no problems created when dogs explore the planting beds. I’m using spiky Roses in one garden to persuade the dog not to venture too close to a steep drop. It is really important that routes around the garden are well designed so the dogs don’t need to charge through planting and I find that if desire lines for people and dogs are catered for the design works well and everyone sticks to the paths. Selina Botham is an award winning garden designer based in Surrey. If you would like to redesign your garden and need some professional help contact Selina on 07894 553 202 or see our web site for further ideas www.designsforallseasons.co.uk or our facebook page Selina Botham – Designs for all Seasons or follow us on Instagram @designsforallseasons

For the best online prices, it’s a really good idea to sign up to shopping sites’ mailing lists. There are often sales, flash discounts and other offers that non-subscribers don’t hear about, and in some cases the discounts can be very big: for example, New Look has offered £25 off orders and GAP has taken 20% off sale items and 30% off full-price styles. You could also sign up for a deals service such as Groupon, but beware: they send an awful lot of emails, and many of the deals are subject to limits in terms of availability and expiry. Whenever you see a supposed bargain on a product or service you can get elsewhere, it’s always a good idea to see what the going rate usually is.

WIFI EVERYWHERE EASILY AND CHEAPLY

This guide about backing up our computers was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, which have been providing computer solutions since 1989.

We know how frustrating it can be when your wifi signal is no longer making it to the areas you need it, or maybe the poor signal is causing the internet to run more slowly - maybe it’s the kids bedroom, the conservatory or even the lodge in the garden? Well we may have found an ideal solution for you, using a well-established technology which is found in mobile phone transmitters, repeaters and other grid based connections, the system in question is called Mesh, and it has also been installed in large offices and hotels for many years, but due to cost limitations it hasn’t really become a consumer product….until now The item we are specifically referring to will offer “across the property” wifi connection with minimal installation and setup. The starter kit consists of 3 transmitters, where one unit plugs directly into your router and replaces your existing wifi connection, the other two units (more can be added if required) can be positioned anywhere around the building, providing it can “see” one of the other transmitters. The magic of this system is in the transmitters as they

have two broadcast systems inbuilt, one deals with your conventional wifi signal, the other transmitter is for your “backbone” connection. This uses a different frequency and allows transmitters to share the same wifi, and handle to Passover of traffic as you roam from one transmitter zone to another. Sounds complex, but its all done for you so you don’t need to worry about it The initial configuration is carried out from an app you can download on your smart phone or tablet, where it offers some neat features like parental control - to add time restrictions on specific devices on specific days of the week, or to setup a guest network. The starter packs are available in two models - both packs have 3 repeaters in the kit. The standard model is recommended for properties upto 300 square metres, and the more powerful kit covers upto 600 square metres. Additional devices are available to add to the kit if required. The costs of the kit is £140.00 for the standard kit with the higher powered kit being £205.00. Would be a worthy upgrade to solve any coverage issues before the Christmas rush!

STAFF VACANCY Due to our continuing success we have a vacancy for a Junior member of our sales and support team. At the beginning of September the AllSaints coffee machine, which has been a part of the AllSaints family since the day we opened, brewed its last cup of coffee. Sadly, it broke down and the damage was irreparable. Coffee machines are super expensive and are quite obviously a vital cog in the AllSaints operation. After two days of serving simple filter coffee and Matt tirelessly searching for a solution, we had a breakthrough. AllSaints received two generous donations to go towards a new coffee machine. This not only meant that AllSaints could resume serving its speciality coffee, but even greater than that it demonstrated to AllSaints that you, our customers, truly believe in us, and the support AllSaints offers to local young people. This support has been overwhelming! AllSaints has a new manager! Tina joined the team at the beginning of September! Tina has had many years of experience working with

the public in various roles, and she will be a huge asset to the AllSaints team in passing on her wellhoned skills in all things Customer Service. She is awesome! Please pop in and say hello. With one manager joining AllSaints, another leaves. AllSaints is preparing to say farewell to Matt. Matt has been involved in AllSaints from day one and has made the exciting but difficult decision to flee the nest! “Managing AllSaints for the last four years has been an amazing, unforgettable experience. I have learnt a great amount about supporting vulnerable young people and created a real love for COFFEE. AllSaints has a special place in my heart, and I look forward to seeing it grow and develop.” AllSaints will be launching a new winter menu at the beginning of November, but of course returning with the new menu is everybody’s favourite ‘Pigs in Blankets’ panini! and a variety of winter warming soups!

FAMILY HEALTH DAY IN ASHTEAD

All our ideas, thoughts and plans finally came to fruition on Saturday, 8th September when the Patient Participation Group (PPG) helped to celebrate the 110th Birthday of the AshLea Medical Practice and 70 years of the NHS! We were delighted to have a steady stream of visitors, including our own GP’s, MP Chris Grayling and Councillor Chris Townsend, join our celebrations at the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall and there was certainly a wealth of information to be found from

34 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - November 2018

our guest charities and organisations. There was definitely a lively “buzz” and you can find out further contact details in the Autumn/Winter edition of the Practice Newsletter, including the fun of a smoothie bike and the yummy healthy snacks provided by WI.ng (a group of younger WI enthusiasts). One of the highlights of the day had to be when one visitor, arriving with her daughter, announced that the Practice only started 8 years before she was born! What a delightful and interesting lady she was! AshLea Medical Practice

A RIGHT ROYAL VISIT The Grange Centre for People with disabilities welcomed their royal patron, HRH The Duke of Gloucester, for a tour of the site and the official opening of their new Heritage Room.

The Duke of Gloucester visited The Grange in September to catch up on all the latest news and officially open the new Heritage Room. The Duke was met by the Communications group who welcomed him with Makaton signing. Makaton is a sign and symbol language used by people with learning disabilities.

40 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - November 2018

Then it was off to the main kitchen to join in with scone making. The catering team heard that the Duke liked chocolate and came up with a chocolate orange scone recipe. Next stop on the tour was Studio 3 which offers people with disabilities, training in photography and film animation. Students gave the Duke a

demonstration of how the green screen works. He was also introduced to the Grange’s latest mini-business – designing and making mugs using a special thermal press. The team made him a mug with his name and personal crest on it. Finally, the Duke officially opened the new Heritage Room, which documents the history of The School of Stitchery and Lace founded in 1938, before becoming The Grange in the 1970s. He met heritage experts and representatives from the Heritage Lottery Fund who funded the project. Among the guests was Bookham resident Peggy Brooks, who came to The School of Stitchery and Lace in 1955 as a trainee.

Peggy (right of pic) made clothes for The Duke’s children. Audrey Warboys (blue dress) was a secretary at The Grange from 1949-1952 and has donated embroidered items made for her, by the then students, to the collection. People we support and guests joined the Duke for lunch in the ballroom where he chatted to everyone and unveiled a plaque. In a short speech, he made a touching reference to his mother, our former patron Princess Alice, saying she would have been ‘delighted to see The Grange flourishing and doing such good work’. Each department at The Grange contributed towards a hamper of Grange goodies including the scones he helped make when he first arrived.

LINK GROUP

CELEBRATES THE BATTLING BARONESS OF ASHTEAD

Elsie Knocker pictured here on the left

In September, Link Group at St. George’s, Ashtead, was delighted to welcome many visitors when it hosted a talk by local historian Richard Hughes, as part of the Mole Valley Heritage Open Days. Entitled The Battling Baroness of Ashtead, this was the fascinating account of the achievements of Baroness de T’Serclaes (Elsie Knocker), born in 1884 and who lived in Ashtead for nearly 50 years and was remembered by some in the audience. This extraordinary woman was an early pioneer of motorcycling and then in WW1 a member of the Flying Ambulance Corps; she went on to set up a dressing station for the wounded only about 100 yards from the trenches. Elsie won numerous medals for her bravery and saving thousands of soldiers’ lives. Richard’s talk was very well-received and we felt privileged to learn about our own Battling Baroness of Ashtead.

Link Group has been enjoying an active year, including a delightful outing to NT Nymans Gardens in June and a Garden Party at a member’s house, helping to raise funds for the charity, Dyscover. This works with people who have speech and language problems following a stroke. At present our fund stands at over £1000 and has also been aided by a monthly raffle and our sales tables. We have had many interesting talks; Canine Partners, which included a visit from a charming four-legged friend, the Jubilee Sailing Trust and Rob Walker, the local unsung hero of motor racing whose centenary will be celebrated on Sunday 21 October with a parade of historic racing cars through Dorking. Link Group welcome ladies to its meetings at St George’s Christian Centre on the 2nd Thurs. of the month at 8.00pm. Contact: Gail Arch 01372 274508 Ann Goulder

ROWHURST LEATHERHEAD’S ‘BLESSED PLOT’

A large audience heard the first monthly lecture of the Leatherhead & District Local History Society’s new season when Lucy Quinnell of Fire & Iron Gallery talked about Rowhurst, the house owned by her family since 1932 but whose origins are a source of speculation. Rowhurst is located on a spur in North Leatherhead at the highest point in the area, 60 Lucy Quinnell metres above sea level, between two tributaries of the River Mole. The house was evidently built in three phases: a first building, represented now only by the semi-basement; a second timber-framed building dated to 1346; and the newest part dating from 1632. The semi-basement is a 25 feet square room with flint walls 21⁄2 feet thick. There are five cupboard niches in the walls, suggesting storage of important items, and arches similar to those in a large dovecote in France. Two dovecotes appear in local records yet such a structure would surely not have required such substantial foundations.

Rowhurst

Rowhurst appears as a name from 1418 to 1543 with some fields. The development of 1632 is not documented, which is puzzling. In 1712 the property was mentioned as a ‘messuage’ with 40 acres. Several short tenures followed and the buildings became ruinous. The house was restored in the 20th century when the Quinnell family arrived and ran a forge there. Today’s Fire & Iron Gallery is a development of that tradition.

So how old is Rowhurst really, and how significant is that semi-basement? Edwina Vardey’s A History of Leatherhead describes Leatherhead as ‘a key place in the local government; a centre of royal authority and the site of a minster church.’ King Alfred left the royal vill of ‘Leodridan’ in his will, thought to equate with Pachenesham or North Leatherhead. Later records feature a prison, pound, courthouse, gatehouse and church.

Rowhurst - 1890s Might Rowhurst’s origins date back to that time - or earlier? The semi- basement has been suggested in connection with the missing Anglo-Saxon minster church. Buildings on The Mounts near Randalls Road date from the 1200s, so the earlier church must lie somewhere nearby. Bronze Age and Roman pottery was found at Rowhurst in 2017, and archaeological evidence might still exist beneath the nearby 57-acre Teazle Wood. Fire & Iron’s site is now a nature reserve and Lucy recently led a successful campaign to protect Teazle Wood as a major local conservation area. This month’s L&DLHS lecture on Friday, 16 November will hear authoress Alice Graysharp reveal what happened when her mother, Edith Tompkins, was evacuated to Leatherhead as a child during the Second World War. The monthly talks start at 8pm in the Letherhead Institute with coffee served from 7.30pm. Entrance is just £2. The Museum closes in December until April 2019 but next year’s temporary exhibitions may include a special tribute to local historian Goff Powell whose recent death sadly meant the loss of one of the history society’s best loved and most active figures. THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

ASHTEAD W.I. OCTOBER MEETING REPORT This was a party evening for us all with celebrations for Ashtead W.I.’s 45 birthday, 100 years of Surrey W.I. and also Votes for Women, so we enjoyed decorations, a delicious cake and glass of bubbly (allowing for the drivers amongst us). Our 2 visitors were happy to share all this with us. One of our members read a cutting from a 1980 Observer newspaper, of the memories of an 87 year old, who, as a child had been the flag boy at Epsom Downs on a particular Derby Day. He had to lower the flag calling for a horse-drawn ambulance when Emily Davidson threw herself under the King’s horse. This flag boy was the father of our member reading out the article! Our speaker this month was John Stirling, who as an actor worked with very many well-known people and told us about them with stories from behind the scenes, which we found fascinating. While working on a film in Cornwall he had to find 12 rather poorly-kept donkeys from all over the U.K. Sadly the film couldn’t be completed and he had to try to

find future homes for the donkeys! This proved to be impossible so he and his wife set up a Donkey Sanctuary near their home in Derbyshire, and they now have several hundred to look after. The Sanctuary has been much helped by many W.I.s, and with a great deal of support from famous names in the film and TV world, who otherwise keep very quiet about all their great work for the animals. John and his wife (and some donkeys) have met the Queen at Buckingham Palace, who has also shown interest in the cause, and the Sanctuary now provides much help and comfort to visiting children with special needs. We all found this such an amazing turnaround in the life of John and his wife. Our evening finished with a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday to Us, news of our many subgroups, Christmas and other forthcoming events. The next meeting on Wednesday 7th November will be our AGM, followed by home-grown entertainment. FROM SANDRA BROWN

MOLE VALLEY W.I. SEPTEMBER MEETING REPORT On a warm September evening, Meriel, our President welcomed the members, visitors and our speaker Dr. Nicholas Henderson. Special greetings were given to those with birthdays this month. The business part of the evening included updates from the various clubs and information about forthcoming events & outings. Denise reminded us that the London Christmas Lights Trip is planned for December 13th and will include a Carvery meal. Discussion took place about two Christmas Fairs: The Fetcham Village Hall Fair on November 17th and The Fetcham Christmas Fair on December 1st. Thought was put into the charities that we are planning to give donations and into organising of an Education Day.

62 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - November 2018

After a tea break and chat we settled down to hear Dr. Nicholas Henderson tell us about the life and times of Jane Seymour & Anne of Cleves. It was a fascinating, humorous talk and was illustrated by interesting slides which brought it all to life! Mole Valley WI meet at Fetcham Village Hall on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.45pm. Activities take place throughout the year within smaller groups which reflect the wide range of our members’ interests. These include reading, rambling, badminton, Scrabble, Bridge, knitting, gardening, Mah-jong & craftwork. FETCHAM VILLAGE W.I. SEPTEMBER REPORT The September meeting saw the return of two of our friends who had taken a break from membership but are now back with us, a new lady who has recently moved to the area, a recommended colleague from another organisation, and the return of Karen and Marion who were with us a couple of months ago. It proved to be a very sociable evening, despite some of our regular ladies and two committee members being unable to attend. The main meeting took precedence before a return visit from speaker Victoria Helstrip whose subject this time was Burma. She has a knack of skillfully holding your attention with her tales of teaching and travelling, and we could have listened for much longer, but refreshments and a bring and buy were calling, to enable Sylvia to close the meeting at 9.30. A board collected several names for the fish and chip supper and quiz on the 10th October courtesy of Emlyn Downs, and arrangements confirmed for the Macmillan coffee morning on the 28th of this month - the committee meeting following on into that afternoon. Knit and natter has an exciting new project taken up by Sheila with a seasonal theme - all to be revealed later this month. Plans for the November RNLI fair, and December Fetcham Village Fair are being discussed as we will be involved in both, and several diary dates were carefully noted to take us towards the end of the year. For more details please phone Rosemary on 01372 376906 or Maureen 01372 842498. Our next main meeting takes place on the 7th November, we meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Rumble Room at Fetcham Village Hall. Do join in. Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead Can you see the problem? The last time I walked along the South Bank in London, the tide was out. There is often a sand sculptor there doing amazing things with a spade and a water spray. He wasn’t there that day…but I was surprised to see the ‘river beach’ swarming with people in hi-vis jackets, combing through the debris and picking up bits so small I couldn’t see what they were. They looked busy so I didn’t distract them but I think they were picking out the tiny bits of plastic that result from bottles, cups, plastic bags etc disintegrating in the water. It struck me what an incredibly labour-intensive activity it was. How much simpler it would be if that plastic had never got into the river to start with. It’s so much easier to collect an entire, for example, plastic bottle than scrabble about retrieving the thousands of fragments it makes when it finally falls to pieces. I imagine that most disintegrated plastic never gets collected by busy hi-vis jacketed people, it just makes its way down rivers into the sea, all over the world, and forms great islands of debris. The estimated amount is 12 million tons of plastic a year ends up in the oceans! We’ve probably all seen pictures of this, and the sad photos of wild life entangled in the things we discard. It’s not only affecting turtles and fish in faraway oceans, it can happen in your back garden too. It is a global problem. But at heart, it’s a problem that we can all help to solve. We could massively cut down the number of plastic items that need collecting and recycling if we used fewer of them in our daily lives. You can start small, maybe taking a refillable bottle of water when you go out rather than buying a single-use one when you get thirsty. You could put pressure on the supermarkets to rethink their packaging practises by returning non-recyclable meat trays and yogurt pots, with a polite letter asking them to reassess how they pack produce. Agitate for Deposit-Refunding Schemes (DRS) – where the item’s selling price includes a deposit for packaging (e.g. bottles, cans) - this can help to achieve very high take-back rates, maximising reuse and recycling, and minimising litter. You may have missed it but 15th September was World Clean Up Day – a world-wide event to encourage people to take personal action on that day in their locality, joining in litter-picks etc. (www.worldcleanupday. org/about/) But the real value of such events is the ongoing changes they can cause, especially if they can cure ‘trash blindness’! Have you got that?! It’s when we are so used to throwing things away or buying overpackaged goods that we just don’t see the impact we are having on the environment or how we are wasting resources. We just don’t see the problem. So take a fresh look, see what you can do, see if you can make every day a world clean-up day… Chris Ellis website: www.transitionashtead.org.uk email: info@transitionashtead.org.uk

www.thememorybook.co.uk sarah@thememorybook.co.uk | @thememorybook | facebook/thememorybook Ben, Ruth’s eldest son, came home from school one Monday afternoon, clutching a crumpled piece of A4 paper. He waved it in the direction of his mother before tossing it onto the kitchen worktop, vaguely near Ruth’s ‘I’ll sort it out later’ pile of other crumpled sheets of paper. As he disappeared out of the room, tearing open a packet of cheese and onion crisps with his teeth, he flung a remark in her direction with the confident assumption that all responsibility for this piece of paper lay now entirely with his mother. “Duke of Edinburgh Award thing. We’re all doing it. I need kit for the walking bit and we need to hand in a cheque by next week. We’ll also need to find some volunteer work to do… What do you reckon Mum? Would babysitting for Sarah count?” Ben was out of earshot before his mother had even taken a breath to speak. Ruth was irritated by her son’s glib attitude and by his suggestion that looking after his young sister equated to ‘volunteer work’. She decided to take immediate action and telephoned her old friend Louise who was the manager of the local Age UK Charity Shop. Early the following Saturday morning, Ruth took a bag of unwanted items to the charity shop. Attached to that bag was a scruffy, sleepy and rather disgruntled son. Louise was there to show Ben the ropes and, as soon as her friend had gone, she turned to face the boy she’d known since he’d been in nappies. “Right, I’m going to empty these bags here and sort out potential stock and my colleague Clare is out front, serving the customers. I’ve got something very important for you to do. Do you see that ironing board over there? Do you also see that large pile of creased clothes?” Ben spent three hours at the ironing board. After several rejected attempts, he finally got the hang of it. Louise taught him how to iron a man’s shirt and

66 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - November 2018

even how to create a centre seam on trousers. After his lunch break, she saw Ben outside, staring at something in the window. His initial expression of confusion was replaced with a satisfied smile as he re-entered the shop. “What are you so pleased about, Ben? Enjoying yourself that much are you? If you carry on looking so cheerful, I might even let you start serving customers!” Ben explained that he’d spotted the perfect birthday gift for his dad. He also begged Louise to let him serve in the shop. Ironing was making his arm ache and was really, really boring. He was never going to iron his own clothes. What was wrong with creased shirts anyway? Ben didn’t want to admit that he’d enjoyed his day and returned to his teenage taciturn self as soon as Shops & Services he got home. When Ruth asked him how it had gone, he simply grunted his stock answer – a bit lame but ok. Ruth had already been on the phone with Louise and used great self control not to question Ben about his new ironing skills. On Sam’s birthday, Sarah had made her dad a card and gave him a drinks mat with her picture on it. Daniel had haphazardly wrapped a cd that Ruth had bought and Ben had the gift that he’d bought from the charity shop. Sam opened his presents and cards, expressing the appropriate amount of gratitude and appreciation for each one. Ben’s present was the last to be opened. It was a lime green vase with maroon stripes at the base. A genuine look of surprise and pleasure came over his face. A genuine look of shock and embarrassment came over Ruth’s. “Isn’t it great Dad? It’s exactly the same as the one that you gave Mum last Christmas. I saw how upset you were when she told you that she’d broken it!” 32

BOOK REVIEWS NOVEMBER

I Love you Too Much’ by Alicia Drake (£8.99) Thirteen year old Paul is adrift in a sea of wealth, pretence and an obsession with status. Struggling with a self-absorbed and neglectful mother, whilst trying to form a connection with his own narcissistic father, Paul is desperate to be loved. Always overlooked, it is only a matter of time before he sees something he isn’t supposed to see…. ‘Firefly’ by Henry Porter (£14.99) This is the first of Porter’s novels which I have read and I found it engrossing. The story follows the trail of a highly intelligent 13 year old Syrian refugee. It takes the reader from his village in Syria via camps in Turkey, Greece and through the Macedonian mountains. Naji is being hunted by a group of vicious ISIS thugs. They want to prevent him from revealing the wealth of knowledge he has obtained of their crimes and plans. MI6 become involved and they recruit a former agent, Paul Samson, to find and protect the boy whom they have codenamed Firefly. An intriguing thriller and insight into the horrors faced by many on the migrant trail in their attempt to escape war and poverty. ‘The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker (£18.99) ‘Great Achilles, brilliant Achilles, shining Achilles, godlike Achilles’ says Briseis in the book’s opening page ‘we never called him any of these things; we called him the butcher’. In this stunning novel Pat Barker goes back to the most famous war of all telling the story of the siege of Troy from the point of view of the local women taken by the Greek forces. Barker’s story has its feet firmly on the ground. Yes, the gods are there, Apollo sends a plague, Achilles is the son of a sea goddess who brings him divinely forged armour and Hector’s body is magically restored to freshness after being pulled behind Achilles’s chariot. But this divine intervention always feels like it’s happening to real people because it all takes place in a convincingly grubby brutal Bronze Age world. Barker’s language is fresh and direct - thankfully she makes no attempt to adopt a faux-archaic style. Powerful and memorable.

EMILY WILDING DAVISON MAQUETTE UNVEILED IN EPSOM

Artist Christine Charlesworth and Chair of the Emily Davison Memorial Project Sarah Dewing at Epsom Racecourse unveiling the maquette.

Thursday 11 October is the birthday of suffragette Emily Wilding Davison. To celebrate her birthday the Emily Davison Memorial Project have released the first photos of the maquette (small version) of the proposed life-size sculpture of suffragette Emily Wilding Davison, who famously walked in front of the king’s horse in the 1913 Epsom Derby, created by Artist Christine Charlesworth MRBS SWA Commissioned by the Emily Davison Memorial Project, the finished bronze sculpture will be positioned in Epsom town centre. It will sit on a pale granite bench allowing visitors to sit with Emily. There are also plans to make the statue interactive so anyone with a smart phone will be able to hear and see Emily, played by an actress, tell her story as they sit on the bench beside her Emily Davison was highly educated with two university degrees. She had a good sense of humour and was a popular, kind and articulate woman. Christine felt that it would be appropriate to depict her not just as somebody who was passionate about women’s suffrage, but also as an approachable, attentive and sociable woman, happily conversing

with whoever decides to sit next to her on the bench. Christine will also add to the statue Emily’s hunger strike medal which has seven bars each representing the time she went on hunger strike, Emily was forcefed 49 times. Her hat is a copy of the hat Emily wore at the Derby on 4th June 1913. Limited edition Bronze and Bronze resin ‘collectors’ piece, are also on sale with the profits going towards the £50,000 funds needed for the sculpture. Work on the main figure will start in November and unveiling is planned for June 2019. Paul Taylor Vice-Chair of the Emily Davison Memorial Project said: “This is more than just a statue. Christine has added details of Emily’s life that most people are unaware of to the sculpture and with the added technology enabling people to hear her story we hope current and future generations will get to know the real Emily Davison.” If you would like more information about Emily Davison or how to support and donate to the Emily Davison Memorial Project visit their website at http://www.emilydavisonproject.org/

BMW3 Saloon CAR REVIEW

One of the rewarding treats of for any car enthusiast has to be the highly sophisticated & stylish Paris Motor Show. And it was no different this time around, a showpiece battlefront of car sales. For me, the car of class was the new BMW 3 Saloon. The seventh generation of the brand & bound to continue. Since its launch in 1975, BMW’s most successful model has continuously improved. No wonder more than fifteen million have been sold worldwide. The latest motoring masterpiece, with its revised styling, superb driving dynamics, supreme handling & a host of innovative features, will be up for grabs from March 9, next year. On its captivating debut, in October in Paris, it had a look of quality without a mind-boggling asking price. The company’s 129,932 workers, and especially its inventive brain-box designers & specialised engineers, must be proud of their product. BMW claim the 3 Series saloon, with sales of 15 million, is the heartbeat of the company. The latest design benefits from revised proportions, a longer wheelbase, reduced weight & drag with neat & tidy precise lines that underpin it’s superior driving dynamics & road holding. It also revels in a fresh range of standard options for the clear & precise centre console, as well as safe feel revised leather steering wheels with multi-function buttons and thumb rests. It is taller, longer, roomier and wider than its predecessor. The cabin has been improved to maximise comfort with more leg & headroom for the occupants.

74 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - November 2018

Even getting out has been made easier for rear passengers with the door aperture height increased. Occupants will be joined by the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, a clever digital operation that responds to the spoken prompt “Hey BMW”. This triggers the new era for the group in which drivers will increasingly be able to operate their car and access its functions merely by speaking to it. Wow! The system helps the driver; learns their preferences, is familiar with their favoured settings; seat heating or the places they drive to frequently using the navigation facility. “Take me home” you order and it does. You can even give your Personal Assistant a pet name to create individuality. Not only does it obey your command it assists and provides casual rejoinder conversation. Saying “I’m cold” will stir the Assistant to adjust the temperature. Ask it where the nearest petrol station is and, warning you about traffic jams, it will guide you there. The astute updates on the car’s advanced technology allied to BMW’s anxiety to ensure the customer is satisfied they are getting their moneys worth, is a treasure. I don’t want to appear to be assuming the role of a salesman, but I confess I am a fan and would advise a potential buyer : go for it... Specification and choice. BMW320d. Power 190HP. Top speed 149mph. Zero-62mph in 7.1s. Fuel consumption 64.2mpg.Price £33.610. By Ted Macauley

HOME WANTED! Donna, Monty & Missy

Donna is a very young, stunning tabby & white girl who found herself pregnant after several months of living rough. Before coming into care with her kittens she gave birth in somebody's shed! Donna is a fantastic mother to 14 week old son Monty, and daughter Missy. Donna, Monty & Missy are inseparable and are often found playing or curled up asleep together. Donna and her babies are very friendly, confident cats and could therefore be homed with sensible children. However, they must be the only animals in the household as Donna can be protective of her kittens around other animals. If you feel you can give Donna & her kittens the loving forever home they so desperately deserve please call Rosemary on 01737 350307 Epsom Ewell & District Branch http://www.epsom.cats.org.uk If you cannot adopt a cat but would still like to help us please go to https://www.justgiving.com/Epsom-CatsProtection

P OEM C O RN ER REFLECTIONS I have a problem - don’t we all With the mirror on my wall Which shouldn’t lie, or so they say, But mine deceives me every day! I stand, sideways, and give a smile But find it hard to reconcile The flabby figure that I see With the slender shape I thought was me! A modern mirror should reflect The image we yearn to project, The “dream” of what we crave to be And not this harsh reality!!

FREEWHEELERS SUMMER REVIVAL

Freewheelers is a local charity who work with disabled and non-disabled artists using theatre, dance, film, music and animation. They achieve high production standards alongside a personcentred approach. They entertain, innovate, collaborate and challenge perceptions. They often surprise people! Artistic excellence goes hand in hand with learning and personal growth. The end of Summer Term saw the revival of their two act production of Amandla! Which marked the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s birth. The performance at The Harlequin Theatre in Redhill brought to a conclusion a fantastic 5 year project and a huge amount of hard work from the amazing cast, volunteers and staff. Fantastic feedback was received from the audience members, highlighting the power of the story

80 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - November 2018

and the huge determination and talent of the Freewheelers: “A very moving and educational performance. Very informative about South African history and proves that disabled people can do anything if they are given the chance!” “The performance was really powerful and had quite an impact on me in various ways - a strong cast with everybody contributing in very special ways to tell a story, familiar but told in a very thought-provoking way - I was hooked! At the end, it was also so clear what a special community you have helped to build - so mutually supportive, capable of really enjoying what they do.” The Ashtead & Leatherhead Local send huge congratulations to all who made the show possible! Very well done!

LOCAL CHARITIY CURRIES FAVOUR!

(photo shows some of the members and supporters of the East Surrey Branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association at a special fundraising Curry Night at Fetcham Tandoori on Monday 8th October 2018)

On Monday 8th October 2018, around 50 members and supporters of the East Surrey Branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association attended a special fundraising Curry Night at Fetcham Tandoori in Fetcham. As well as enjoying an excellent two-course Indian meal, everyone present exercised their brains with a fun table quiz, and a raffle at the event helped to raise over ÂŁ750 for the Branch, which will help them continue their vital services to local people living with Motor Neurone Disease. Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a rapidly progressive terminal neurological condition which kills, on average, six people every day within the UK.

84 Ashtead & Leatherhead local - November 2018

It can leave people unable to walk, talk or even feed themselves, whilst their mind and senses invariably remain unaffected. Average life expectancy from diagnosis is just fourteen months and, as yet, there is no cure or effective treatment. The East Surrey Branch of the MND Association provides care and support to around sixty people living with MND throughout the East Surrey area, as well as helping to fund vital research into the disease itself. For further information about MND and the work of the Association, please visit www.mndassociation.org or contact Simon Edmands on 07753 821964 or eastsurrey@mndassociation.org

LEATHERHEAD LIBRARY

Do you feel that life is a bit hectic & that you are always rushing around from place to place?

Did you know…? When you borrow books from a Surrey Library you can return them to any other library in the group. There is a ‘Book Drop’ at some libraries, including Leatherhead, where you can return books when the library is closed. (Your books will then be discharged by staff when the library is next open). e-News…Are you aware that you can access many of the library services from a smart phone or tablet while you are on-the-move? The Surrey Libraries app allows you to reserve books, renew your loans and to keep track of events in the library. You can pick up a leaflet about this at the Library, or find out more on our website www.surreycc.gov.uk/libraries We recommend…’A Gentleman in Moscow’ by Amor Towles. It is a lively novel which begins in 1922 when an aristocrat’s life of luxury takes a sudden downward turn. He is forced to live under house arrest in the attic of a hotel in Moscow, while Russia undergoes decades of turbulent change. Surprisingly, this elegantly written tale is very funny and uplifting. DISTRACTION BURGLARY

With winter approaching, opportunist “rogue traders” see a good opportunity to take advantage of people’s vulnerabilities and the desire to have their homes safe, secure and watertight for the coming colder months? Surrey Police continues to work alongside a number of partner agencies, developing initiatives to help all members of our communities be and feel safe in their own homes. As part of this ongoing work, your Neighbourhood Teams are focusing particular attention on providing guidance, support and awareness to members of the community on how to spot and deal with cold callers, rogue traders and distraction burglars. You should know, however, that you have a right to refuse to deal with anyone who comes to your door uninvited. You can always refuse to answer if you have any concerns about the caller. If you have a door chain and do intend to answer the door, then put the chain across before opening the door. We would not recommend that you agree for any work to be done without checking that the business offering this service is totally legitimate and reputable. Many areas have directories for businesses that have received positive customer feedback. Also, Trading Standards and Consumer Direct can offer advice on businesses and service providers who should be trustworthy, reliable and who will carry out work for a reasonable price. In many cases, nothing can beat

personal recommendation. It is never a good idea to allow someone you don’t know to carry out work for you. They may not be qualified or competent to do the work and what may sound like a cheap price could turn out to be an expensive choice, particularly if you end up paying out again to have bad work put right!! Additionally, distraction burglaries can be particularly upsetting as they prey on people’s trust in “authority”. For example, a person may call, saying that they are from a utility company, calling to check on reports of “faulty” water pipes, gas leaks or problems with the electricity supply. Once they gain entry, they will distract the resident by asking them to keep an eye on a tap or meter, while others go elsewhere in the house to “carry out checks”. Many people have been distressed to find they have had money, bank cards, jewellery or other items taken in just a few moments. Please insist on seeing appropriate identification for anyone claiming to be from a utility company. You can also telephone the company to find out if they are operating in the area. In fact, even if a uniformed police officer calls at your door they will be perfectly happy for you to ask to see their warrant card to identify themselves, or you can even phone us on 101 to confirm an officer’s details to your satisfaction. Finally, if you are ever put in a position of feeling in any way vulnerable or frightened by unwanted callers, please call the police on 999.

LOCAL ROTARY CLUB MAKES RECORD DONATION!

(PHOTO:Gary Zabel (third from left), Immediate Past President of Leatherhead Rotary Club, presenting a cheque for £15,000 to Jack Bacon from Prostate Cancer UK, together with local Prostate Cancer UK supporters, Chris Eglinton (far left) and Andy Crompton (far right))

On Wednesday 3rd October 2018, around forty members, partners and friends of Leatherhead Rotary Club attended the club's weekly meeting at the Police Federation Headquarters in Leatherhead to see Gary Zabel, the club’s Immediate Past President, present a cheque for £15,000 to Jack Bacon from Prostate Cancer UK, the club’s main charity for support during the previous Rotary year. This fantastic figure represents the largest single amount the club has ever donated to a charity and was raised

through a wide variety of events throughout the preceding twelve months, including the club’s annual Golf Day and 10k Run, together with a very special sell-out Band Concert at Leatherhead Theatre, featuring the British Philharmonic Big Band, led by trombonist Andy Crompton, a close personal friend of Mr Zabel, and who himself was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2014. For further information about prostate cancer and the work of Prostate Cancer UK, please visit www.prostatecanceruk.org.
