From the EDITOR

WELCOME TO OUR FESTIVE ISSUE. Well, where did that year go then? Once again it’s time for Christmas shopping and preparations for the festive holidays … For the last few years, I’ve done most of my Christmas Shopping locally. We are very lucky to have such a wide selection of fabulous retailers to choose from and what better way to support our local community and businesses? And at the same time, saving myself from crowds of people and the traffic queues of course! There is a whole host of Christmas Concerts and lovely local events taking place this year and we have enjoyed selecting some gems for you; we’ve packed as many options into our pages as possible. I do hope something takes your fancy! In other news; It’s great to hear that the impending Oxshott Village Sign has been approved by Elmbridge Borough Council, moving this project one stage closer to completion. I am very much looking forward to seeing it in situ, in the not too distant future! Oxshott and Cobham Music Society are taking bookings for their New Year Concerts; these include Spiritato Baroque Ensemble (UK) as well as, Tyler Hay, Piano. Something lovely to look forward too? Details within. Finally, we also include a great competition for all you MG enthusiasts out there! A substantial & lovely book about the history of these much loved cars is up for grabs! This really would make a wonderful Christmas Gift. See page 38/9 for that. Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year, Until next time,

Ros

ELMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL

GRANTS PLANNING PERMISSION FOR OXSHOTT VILLAGE SIGN

Did you know that Oxshott is currently one of the few villages in Surrey that doesn't have its own traditional sign standing tall and proud in the heart of the village? Well! That’s all about to change! Elmbridge Borough Council have now granted full planning permission for Oxshott’s very own Village Sign to be erected on the land at the junction of Holtwood Road and Steels Lane.

14 Looklocal Magazine - Festive Issue 2018

This has been due to all the hard work of The Oxshott Village Sign Society, all their supporters and the strong community spirit we have in all the towns and villages in our area. The sign is on track for an official unveiling in the Spring of 2019. We look forward to reporting more on this in the new year. For more information go to www.oxshottvillagesign.org

For more information or to make a booking, email events.cobham@hilton.com or call +44 (0) 1932 864 471.

ELMBRIDGE COUNCIL GRANTED THREE YEAR INJUNCTION

Elmbridge Borough Council has been granted a three year protective injunction banning the setting up of unauthorised encampments and fly-tipping on all identified public land. Following on from the recent three-month injunction granted in August 2018, the High Court today (Thursday 8 November) has extended that injunction for a further three years. The injunction covers all of the Borough’s parks, open spaces and car parks. The injunction prevents any individual from occupying land or depositing waste as well as stopping anyone from entering, or occupying any part of the land for residential purposes, including caravans, mobile homes and vehicles. This has proved a very effective deterrent during the temporary injunction. It will also prevent the Council from having to obtain court orders for the removal of these encampments, which can take several days to obtain, and will authorise High Court enforcement officers to move people on if they take no notice of the injunction order. Failure to do so can result in imprisonment, fines or seizure of assets. The Council evidenced large-scale fly-tipping and the cost of clearing it, damage to gates and barriers, lost parking income and the large increase in the number and size of recent encampments as well as the significant impact on communities living adjacent to each encampment and the loss of community facilities during the summer. Leader of the Council, Cllr Tim Oliver said: “I am delighted that the protective injunction has been extended for three years. This will bring relief to our residents and

20 Looklocal Magazine - Festive Issue 2018

businesses who have been impacted by the disruption throughout the summer. I would like to thank the Officers and Members of the Council for the hard work and diligence required to bring our case to the High Court. We will now carry on with the work we are doing to review the security of all of our open sites so that our communities can enjoy their surroundings, whilst continuing to closely monitor any illegal activity across the Borough.” Superintendent Andy Rundle said: “We understand the concerns and the impact on local communities in relation to allegations of criminality and anti-social behaviour associated with some of the recent encampments. When there is criminality of any sort, regardless of who is involved, we will respond and take action. “It is important to understand that Police powers are very specific and prescribed and do not cover civil issues, which we know can sometimes be frustrating and confusing for our communities. “However, in relation to recent events, we are now hopeful that with this injunction in place we can respond proactively to the concerns of local residents and reduce the negative impact of unauthorised encampments upon the local community.” 2018 has seen an unprecedented increase in levels of unauthorised encampments in Elmbridge, totalling 27 on public parks and open spaces as well as other recent encampments on private owned land such as Painshill Park. The size of these encampments has also risen dramatically with some encampments being over 60 vehicles in size.

NEWS UPDATE... From Sue Prentice (on behalf of Cobham Conservation & Heritage Trust) In the October issue of Look Local we reported on the progress of the 3 footpath projects that Cobham Conservation and Heritage have launched with the support of Elmbridge Borough Council and Surrey County Council. The projects were made possible thanks to Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding - a great opportunity to use money levied on Developers for the benefit of the local community. We reported on the completion of the path improvements alongside Knowle Hill Park linking Stoke d’Abernon and Oxshott; this is already proving very popular and very well received by residents and users of the path. See photo to the far right. We are now pleased to report that the new path constructed alongside the edge of Downside Common, has been completed. This provides an all-weather surface for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders from the Cricketers pub to Tinman’s Row on Downside Common Road. Particularly during the winter the boggy and marshy clay soil makes the Common difficult to traverse without wellies – the new path will transform this and enable easy access for all, plus help people getting to the play area, especially for buggies and push chairs. See a photo of the new path above. We are also delighted that progress is being made on the third footpath which is at the lower end of Leigh Hill Rd; creating a new path between Bramble Rise and Leigh Hill Place. This new path will wind through the trees in the recently cleared Leigh Hill Common. We

anticipate that the works will be completed before the end of the year. A further initiative supported by CCHT. together with Elmbridge Borough Council and the Lower Mole Partnership,. saw a small group of volunteers brave a very wet and soggy Sunday in mid-October to help clear an overgrown and neglected ancient pond. Curtain Pond, as it is called, is on the intersection of Downside Road and Cobham Park Road, and those of you who have driven past recently will notice that trees and vegetation have been cut down, opening up the area to allow the pond to re-establish itself. Further work will be undertaken by Elmbridge Borough Council to desilt the pond and undertake some necessary work on the sadly diseased oak tree. Finally Cobham Conservation and Heritage Trust’s last Open Meeting for 2018 will take place on Wednesday December 12th at 8pm at Cobham Village Hall. As we will be approaching Christmas we will be delighted to welcome a group of students from the Yehudi Menuhin School who will entertain us with a short recital, together with a talk from the Head – Kate Clanchy – and the Director of Music – Oscar Colomina i Bosch. We do hope you will join us.

GLOW AT RHS WISLEY 1 DECEMBER - 2 JANUARY

Christmas Glow returns to Wisley this winter, offering the chance to explore RHS Garden Wisley after dark and see some of its most iconic features in a whole new light. Following a twinkling trail around the garden, visitors will discover larger-than-life botanical illuminations, and, for the first time, will enjoy atmospheric music to accompany their walk at certain points. Now in its fourth year, the popular event guides visitors around a new route for 2018, taking in locations including the Rock Garden, the Seven Acres lake and the Jellicoe Canal. Jigantics, designers of cultivated illumination, will this year bring a number of brand new blooms to Wisley, including arches of gladioli over the new Wisteria Walk and a bouquet of alliums on Seven Acres. Favourite installations such as the waterliles on the Jellicoe Canal and interactive colour-changing flowers will return to complete the uniquely floral immersive experience. The paved route will take in not only the floral lights, but also a number of Wisley’s most famous and spectacular

trees, bathed in bright colours to showcase their beauty. The magnificent Glasshouse will also be illuminated, where a magical Woodland Realm awaits discovery, with elves, treehouses and Santa’s reindeer all to be found in a beautiful festive display. Look out for sparkling plantfilled baubles hanging from the trees and the towering ‘Christmas tree’ of vibrant poinsettia. Due to popular demand a priority booking system has been introduced for 2018, and all visitors must book a time slot in advance of their visit. Glow 2018 will be open from 4–8pm (last entry at 7pm) every day between 1 December and 2 January except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The Wisley Plant Centre and Gift Shop will be open throughout, with a fantastic range of decorations and gift ideas for all the family, and hot chocolate, mulled wine, mince pies, cranberry and gin brownies and Christmas cake are just a taste of the warming food and drink on offer. GARDENING MATTERS HANGING BASKETS

Hanging baskets, we do love you. There are many advantages to growing stuff in them, especially if you have a smaller garden or want to brighten up a doorway/ wall/patio, not least of which is that you can completely re-invent your chosen space every time you plant. Planting baskets up should be fairly straightforward (hopefully), regardless of your gardening experience. First step, pick a basket type, and there are 3 types to choose from. Rattan baskets look great and have a plastic liner, which is perfect for water retention; plastic baskets are good for insulation, helping to protect your plants from strong winds and sunshine, and wire-mesh baskets are a traditional design that allows for planting up both the top and sides of the basket. Next step, line the hanging basket and add potting compost. Rest your basket on a bucket to support it while you work and line it with a wood fibre liner or moss. Then mix some water gel crystals and slow-release fertiliser granules into multi-purpose or bedding plant compost and fill the basket, leaving approximately 2cm at top. For rattan baskets and plastic baskets with solid sides, you’ll need fewer plants, up to 3 x centre plants, 3 x plants for colour and 6 x trailing plants. Put the trailing plants a few centimetres from the edge of the basket and fill any gaps with the compost mix, then firm the soil around the base of each plant. In a standard wire-mesh 35cm basket, you can add lots of plants, up to 3 x centre

Cecelia John: 01372 200 000

plants, 5 x plants for colour and between 7-9 plants to trail down the outside of the basket, pushing them carefully into the holes. Sprinkle a further tablespoon of controlled-release fertiliser granules over the compost and water well. Fertiliser should be applied throughout the growing season, or use a liquid feed weekly alongside watering the compost. For the best results, make sure that the size of the plants you choose suits your basket of choice….dahlias or delphinium are out. Good trailing plants are surfinia (the trailing petunia), trailing fuchsia and lobelias. For colour, add nemesia and pansies, along with fuchsias and geranium…..and don’t forget to remove dead flowerheads regularly: not only does it make your basket look tidier, but also it encourages more flowers. Also, you don’t have to plant flowers in your hanging basket: strawberries and tomatoes grow extremely well in baskets and are very easy to pick. Generally speaking, your basket should be watered once or twice a day in the summer, but on hot, dry days, water it early and hang it in the shade. Or put a job lot of ice cubes in it and let them melt slowly. On cold days, wait until it warms up before watering….and ensure the bracket on which it’s hanging is strong enough to hold the weight of a watered basket, because the last thing you want is Auntie Doris walking underneath it as the bracket gives way…. |

BOOK REVIEWS DECEMBER

‘Tombland’ by C. J. Sansom (£20.00) C. J. Sansom fans have been waiting for years for the 7th Shardlake novel and they’ve been amply rewarded in this huge tome. Shardlake travels to Norwich in 1549 on a clandestine mission on behalf of Lady Elizabeth where he and his assistants (Jack Barak and Nicholas Overton) are caught up in a peasant’s rebellion. He discovers that the murder of Edith Boleyn which he is investigating may have connection reaching into the heart of the rebel camp and of the Norfolk gentry..

‘Snap’ by Belinda Bauer It is difficult to read this book without feeling totally charmed by it. This new murder mystery by Belinda Bauer deftly interweaves a West Country cold case, a teenage master burglar, some ill assorted coppers and a pregnant wife into an intelligent mystery murder with a rare blend of humour and darkness. A highly individual book set in rural Devon in the blazing sunshine which I thoroughly enjoyed and am now reading her other books all available of course in the Cobham Bookshop.

‘The Winter Soldier’ by Daniel Mason Opening in the winter of 1915,this is a graphic war and romance story. Lucius, a young idealistic medical student from Vienna enlists in the army to help the wounded. He is thrown into the horror and challenges of an isolated field hospital in the Carpathian Mountains. It lacks even the basic necessities of food, medication or fuel to provide heat. Lucius is intrigued by those soldiers who are suffering from shell shock. He wants to heal them, not merely patch up their physical injuries to return them to the battlefront. With limited practical experience Lucius has to quickly learn, hampered by having broken his wrist just prior to leaving. He is taught and guided by Sister Margarete, the nun who has been nursing the wounded and keeping the hospital going. Their relationship develops from the shared battle to care for patient’s physical and mental wellbeing, in particular that of one severely traumatized young man, Horvath. Torn apart by the war, Lucius desperately seeks to reunite with Margarete in its aftermath. : 01932 862903 : info@cobhambooks.com : www.cobhambooks.com : 12A Anyards Rd, Cobham, KT11 2JZ

MGB

THE ILLUSTRATED HISTORY BOOK REVIEW AND COMPETITION An invite to journey down Memory Lane has dropped heavily through my letter box. It is in the expansive and colourful guise of a vast tome entitled “MGB - The Illustrated History!” It took me straight back to my shared ownership of a drop-top MG when I was serving my country as a National Serviceman based at Bomber Command HQ, RAF Wyton, nr Cambridge, with its spectacular display of V-Bombers, Valiants, Victors and Vulcans. My Welsh pal Ed Williams and I, high flyers in our jointly-bought MG, were the envy of the jetsetting crews, and just to add to our eccentricty , in car, we always wore black and shiny top hats when, at weekends, we were outing with undergrads, mainly female. Ah well!!! The reminder of those carefree and madcap days is the pleasurable MGB volume, the fourth edition, from Veloce, the painstaking publishers of automotive books galore. The bulky hardback, a coffee-table spectacular, is not cheap at thirty five quid - but its 256 pages and 260 pictures of the iconic and remarkable fun car are a bargain treat for those of whose affection for the marvellously enjoyable motor is a continuing memory. The author, Jonathan Wood, is the author of more than 30 books on the history of the UK’s motor industry, and he is...deservedly in my opinion... twice the winner of the Guild of Motoring Writers’ Montagu Trophy as well as being awarded similar recognition in America for his handiwork. His co-author, Lionel Burrell was the originator of Classic Car magazine, and, when he is not showing off his 3-litre Bentley, which he has owned for 50 years,he is restoring a rebuild of a 1926 Talbot. They are both committed MG enthusiasts, hence

their unstinting efforts to excite we outsiders from the pedigree frontage of the traditional iconic and bestloved sports car. But back to the Veloce book. It is a treasure. I have not been able to put it down. Its high level is a showpiece and the splendour of the photographs, as well as the recountings, reminiscences and technical detail and data will, I promise, hold any MG enthusiast, or , for that matter, any keen car enthusiast, spellbound. After Ed’s and my demob, he returned to Cardiff and I to my Manchester home town. We agreed he could have our wee treasure. I moved on to a convertible Sunbeam Talbot, then, much later, I progressed to super-car heights with three successive E-Type Jaguars and then a Lamborghini Espada. Was I crazy? Each,in its own showcase way, was a thrill of a wellenvied drive - but I never quite recaptured the total glee of running about the country in our airy MG. After our demob I lost contact with Ed. I wonder if he still parades our draughty wee runner with its hard-on- the-bum seats, ripped-off fabric roof but pleasantly harmonic engine. I am more than happy to share my overwhelming admiration for the splendid book and spread its appeal to what I know would be an appreciative readership. Therefore I, kindness personified, will bless a lucky recipient with a prize copy if they come up with the correct answer to my quiz question:

What do the initials MG stand for? Please email your answers and magazine By Ted Macauley area to ros@looklocalmagazie.co.uk before 14/12/18

THANK YOU! A COMPLETED MISSION! You may well remember articles in previous Look Locals about Aprender, Bookham’s International Education Charity, and their work in Lebanon supporting Syrian refugee children.

Refugee children engage in active learning during outdoor time at the preschool in Chouf.

Aprender’s Early Years Consultant, Rachael Underwood, created a course which she co-delivered with Phil Hawkins, CEO and founder, to enable a group of community volunteers to open a brandnew preschool in the mountains of Chouf in central Lebanon. Well, the course has now finished and the wonderful new teachers have all received their graduation certificates. “It’s been so exciting to see the transformation in both the children and the teachers.”, said Phil, “When the children arrived on their first day back in November 2017, we saw trauma in their faces.” Since then, Rachael and Phil have delivered 12 days of training spread across the year thanks to donations from many folk in Bookham, Fetcham and further afield. Phil goes on to say that “The generosity of our supporters has enabled us to deliver quality training for free so that vulnerable children get a boost to the start of their lives. You can see the excitement of learning in their eyes now. The teachers are thrilled to see the progress in such a short period of time. It was such a pleasure working with the team as although the course really stretched them, they rose

40 Looklocal Magazine - Festive Issue 2018

to the challenge and are now offering a loving environment that will change the futures of so many lives.” Rachael and Phil spent their final three days in Chouf in October. A new development has been the opening of the first Primary School classroom as some of the older children now need to progress! What happens next? Bookham and Horsley Rotary Club have raised funds to help Aprender take this initiative to the next level. Rachael will be returning to Lebanon across 2019 to train and equip some of the team to become coaches so that the training can be replicated in other locations where needed to boost this essential child development phase for refugee children. Aprender also work in other locations and shortly will be travelling to Brazil to work with education in poor communities. Watch this space!

The team of teachers pose for a photo with their trainers Rachael and Phil (back row, second & third in from left)

We are happy to talk at local events and groups to raise awareness and hopefully do a bit of fundraising! Do get in touch if you would like to book us on 07564 070927 or via email on admin@aprender.co.uk. Do check out the Aprender website, recently renewed by the wonderful Jo Cobley at Cobswebs Website Design (www.cobswebs.com), who generously gave her time and expertise to help this great cause. Thanks Jo!! If you would like to support the valuable work carried out by Aprender you can donate to this local charity through their website at www.aprender.co.uk

Are you, like me, surprised to find How little you know of the human mind? Do you, like me, find it hard To penetrate the bright facade? Do you really know what friends are feeling? WWI REMEMBRANCE DISPLAY AT CLAREMONT FAN COURT SCHOOL

Pupils and students from Year 7 to Sixth Form have created a beautiful and poignant display in the outer hall of the Mansion at Claremont Fan Court School to recognise the First World War Centenary. One

hundred decorative, hand-stitched poppies embellish an army greatcoat to provide a striking reminder of this significant anniversary in the lead up to Remembrance Day.

ROCKY’S GOLF BONUS FOR HOSPICE

Take one stuntman, a boxer, a handful of snooker players, footballers and actors - and challenge them to a game of golf. Result: a cash bonus for the one good cause they all support – Princess Alice Hospice. Stuntman Rocky Taylor - the Cobham-based veteran of scores of movies - hosted a day of golf followed by dinner and entertainment at Burhill Golf Club. The day was enjoyed by former world champion boxer John Conteh, snooker stars Steve Davis, John Virgo and Ireland’s Patsy Fagan, as well as former England and West Ham footballer Trevor Brooking; QPR and Arsenal footballer Terry Mancini and A Touch Of Frost actor John Lyons. During the evening fundraising dinner, at which comedian Kev Orkian brought the house down, an auction helped top up the funds – with items including a golfing voucher for four from Irish pro golfer John O’Leary and a signed album by actor/singer Jess Conrad. Rocky called by the Hospice with John Virgo (former professional snooker player, co-host of BBC’s Big Break,

and commentator for BBC snooker coverage) to hand over the £3,615 raised by the event held in August. The golf and dinner is now in its third very successful year. To date Rocky and his fellow golfers have raised around £12,000 for the Hospice. Tim Iredale, Princess Alice Senior Partnerships Fundraiser said: “It’s absolutely fantastic that Rocky and Burhill Golf Club chose to support the Hospice with this marvellous golf day for a third year in a row. It’s wonderful that all involved can have a brilliant day out on the course in the knowledge that they are also helping to support such a worthy cause. “This funding is vital for us to be able to provide palliative end of life care and bereavement support across such a wide area.” Rocky was especially grateful to Farrants of Cobham for supplying the 80 goodie bags for the players on the day; with extra thanks to organisers Paul and Anita Jones. Next year Rocky will be auctioning signed copies of his upcoming autobiography Jump, Rocky, Jump at the event pencilled in for 16 August.

Take Extra Care of Your Pets this Christmas All the trimmings and paraphernalia of Christmas are wonderful for us, but they can represent a danger to your pet. So with this in mind, what in particular do you need to watch out for at this time of year?

Christmas decorations

If your pet has a tendency to chew, be wary of your Christmas tree lights as they may cause electrocution. Glass baubles also break very easily and it’s difficult to spot the smaller shards of glass, which can easily lodge in a pet’s

paws or mouth – a particular problem if your cat is prone to climbing the tree.

Chocolate

Chocolate contains a substance called theobromine, which is poisonous to dogs and cats. Dark chocolate has the highest amount, although milk chocolate also causes potentially life-threatening symptoms if consumed. It’s a serious issue at any time of the year, but at Christmas the fact that you’re likely to have more chocolate in the house increases the risk.

Rich foods

can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. High fat foods in general tend to irritate your pet’s stomach and intestines, so it’s a good idea to stick to their usual diet as much as possible during the festive season. Whether your pet is timid or bold, providing a safe place where they can retreat from the noise and chaos of Christmas helps them to cope until their normal routine resumes. www.thehealthypetclub.co.u k/top-tips-pets-christmas/ www.timeforpaws.co.uk/ blog/top-10-hazards-for-petsat-christmas-time/
