PETERPAN PLAYGROUP VINES COFFEE SHOP

From the Editor Welcome to our March magazine.

Isn’t it wonderful that the days are getting longer? It seems to have happened very suddenly, too. Early signs of spring can be spotted all over the place, although a little too early, I fear! This month, we send congratulations to Bookham Camera Club as they celebrate a momentous anniversary. It’s always great to include a selection of their wonderful work, and this is a great excuse to do just that. The members of this lovely local club really are a very talented bunch! We also hear from the Peter Pan Playgroup who enjoyed a fun time at Polesden Lacey recently, and on another note, we are delighted to have a very special Look Local Music Matters feature this month, written especially for us by David Jensen; he shares his personal experiences from the times he spent with the late great Mr David Bowie. What a lucky chap he is to have met this very talented man, who has left behind a totally amazing legacy. Thanks also to all of you who entered our book competition last month; winners have been picked from a hat and are listed within! Sorry to the unsuccessful entries, but I hope our winners enjoy the lovely prizes. A message for all dog owners now. Our new Q & A column is up and running, coming to you with the help of Bruce from Bruce’s Doggie Day Care. Bruce welcomes your canine questions, so please email them into me at ros@looklcoalmagazine.co.uk and I will pass them his way. We kick off this month with a question from a reader who is worried about a potentially dangerous medical condition….. well worth a read. A busy month ahead, with Mothers’ Day on 6th March and the early Easter weekend (25th – 28th ) to look forward to too. Let’s hope the sun shines and the Easter Bunny visits us here in Bookham! Wishing you all a great month,

2016 will be a memorable year for Bookham Camera Club as it celebrates its 70th anniversary in April. The first meeting was held in the Bookham Congregational Church Hall on 5th April 1946, when 11 photographers gathered under the leadership of Mrs E M Stephens to create this new camera club. The club then moved to a number of different locations, but eventually returned to what is now the Eastwick Road Church Hall, the site where it

started all those years ago. The club is thriving, with 70 members, and attracts photographers of all abilities. Our common objective is to ‘take a better photograph’ and the annual programme is designed to be active, informative, engaging, inclusive and very importantly, enjoyable. Weekly meetings are held on Thursday evenings between mid-September and the following May, and involve a mix of expert external and internal speakers, practical sessions and competitions. In the

past few months, we have photographed fireworks at night (relatively easy when you know how), birds of prey in flight (definitely not easy!), seen some fabulous photographs of London taken from the rooftops of tall buildings and participated very successfully in a Surrey Photographic Association competition, coming 3rd out of 23 clubs. We will be marking our 70th Anniversary with a major event in the Leatherhead Theatre. From 4th to 28th April 2016, we will have an exhibition of

about 100 framed prints, together with a rolling display of digital images. This will be the third year we have exhibited in the theatre and it promises to be a spectacular display of some great photographs. If you are interested in photography or just want to see some lovely images, please come along to the exhibition, you will not be disappointed. If you would like more details about the club, please visit the website, www.bookhamcc.org.uk which includes the club’s contact details.

COBHAM VILLAGE STITCHES Dressmakers, Restyling & Alteration Experts

ASK BRUCE: ALABAMA ROT In the first of our new ‘Ask Bruce’ columns, we discuss Alabama Rot, as requested by reader Sharon Middleton. Alabama Rot is a serious disease affecting dogs of any age, sex or breed. It causes lesions of the skin and occasionally mouth, which look like bites, sores, wounds or stings, with some dogs developing kidney failure. It’s a relatively new disease to the UK, and so little is known about the causes. As a doggy day care expert, my knowledge of this medical condition is limited, so I consulted our good friend and local vet Simon Felger of Weybridge Veterinary Centre. Simon explained that CRGV (cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy – the full medical name for Alabama Rot) first appears as unexplained redness, sores or swelling of the skin, particularly around the feet and legs but also body, face, tongue or mouth. Signs of kidney disease, which can include vomiting, reduced appetite and tiredness, occur from 2 to 10 days after the skin lesions. He pointed out that even if they develop skin lesions, many don’t develop kidney disease and recover fully. Although Alabama Rot can be serious, the number of dogs affected remains very low, thankfully. While the causes remain unknown, it’s difficult to give any specific guidance on how to avoid it. Following good animal husbandry, such as washing muddy dogs after a walk, will certainly do no harm. Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Cobham. MAINTAINING BOOKHAM AS A DISTINCTIVE VILLAGE Although Surrey is the county with the most trees in Britain, we lag far behind most of our European neighbours as a country. Barring islands and small principalities, only Ireland, Netherlands and Moldova have a lower percentage of tree cover than we do. England as a whole has 8.4% cover, whilst Surrey has 22%. Compare this to France for instance, which has 28% cover, and Germany which has 32% cover, and it is clear that we are the poor men of Europe when it comes to trees. Whilst population density has much to do with this, we can all play our part in trying to maintain a green and pleasant vibe in our own areas. Trees play a large part in permeating the village atmosphere of Bookham; they distinguish us from the miles of suburban sprawl which is today’s outer London. The Bookhams Residents’ Association and the Tree Wardens work hard to keep good tree cover in Bookham. We use monies which are available from both Mole Valley and Surrey County Councils to plant new trees and to maintain the existing stock by managing ageing and problem trees. With council permission, we attend to straggling branches, dying trees, excess growth and unsightly stumps. The next phase of tree works is starting soon. In December, we planted a number of trees in Harecroft and Richmond Way (Fetcham addresses, although they are in the Bookham Ward). A new batch of 17 trees has just arrived and is currently being planted in Barn Meadow Lane and other roads which have lost street trees. Many new roads were developed in the 1960s and 1970s. Laid out with flowering cherry trees, many of

these have died over the years. Barn Meadow Lane, The Garstons, Durleston Park Drive and many others have suffered major tree loss this way. Our aim is to maintain an ‘uneven tree-age distribution’ throughout the area: an area with only mature trees is sometimes called a dying landscape, as there are no young ones to replace the oldies when they eventually die. Please help us to look after any street trees planted near your home by watering them when it is hot, dry or windy. Sharing the task with a group of neighbours is an excellent way to ensure that your street trees survive the early years and develop to enhance your road with cool greens, blossom, shade, birdsong and autumn colour.

I

t was very nice to re-acquaint myself with Vines Coffee Shop recently; having not visited for a while, I had forgotten about all they had to offer…. Situated in The Vineries Garden Centre, this lovely local café really does have a great menu: pop in for breakfast, morning coffee, lunch or afternoon tea. Whichever, you won’t be disappointed, as there really is something for everyone on the eclectic menu. I enjoyed a cup of coffee and a Rocky Road treat, pictured here, when I visited. A comfortable environment, with free wifi as an added perk, and this makes a great place to catch up with friends, have a business meeting or just sit and relax while checking your emails. If you visit for breakfast, you might enjoy a ‘Vines Special’ at the very reasonable price of £4.99. This includes free -range eggs as you like them and cooked to order, local pork sausages, bacon, beans, tomato and toast. There is also a larger version of this dish for any extra hungry folk, or maybe the Vegetarian Special, or does the ‘Design your own Breakfast’ appeal? Bacon baguettes or sausage sandwiches, mouth-watering and made to order, ensure a fresh and tasty start to any day! In addition to these ever-popular traditional English choices, other firm favourites include Eggs Benedict, Eggs Royale, ciabatta, croissants...the list goes on and on... The options for morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea are far too many to cover thoroughly here, but Ploughman’s, jacket potatoes, omelettes, soup and various salads all feature, with a tempting selection of locally baked cakes and slices too. ‘Specials’ boards offer even more choices! As I said, there really is something here for most tastes.

BACK INTO THE SWING OF THINGS....

...AND SO OFF WE GO AGAIN WITH THE LATIN WORDS FOR THE SHAPE OF FLOWERS... I would say that flower shape is a pretty obvious road to go down in an attempt to identify a plant, and there are many different shapes. Usually, it is the overall shape to be considered. One of the most frequently encountered is campanulatus, or bell-shaped, and if you know the word ‘campanology’, meaning ‘bell-ringing’, you will be on the right track of the shape of any plant with this in its name. Campanula is the obvious one – also known as the bellflower – but it can be seen too in names such as Agapanthus campanulatus and Rhododendron campanulatum. If you are after something a little more showy, look out for anything with stellatus/stellata in the name. This means star-shaped, and plants named thus can make a big impression: for example, Magnolia stellata, or star magnolia, has large, elegant, fragrant flowers in the shape of a star. Aquilegia vulgaris var. stellata, also known as columbine and granny’s bonnet, comes in an assortment of colours, but the flowers, although quite small, are all double stars, very striking when placed amongst grasses or other cottage garden plants. Similarly, flowers with tubiformis in their name will be trumpet-shaped. A well-known example is Fritillaria tubiformis, a fritillary with pendant, trumpet-shaped flowers on leafy stems.

Crucifer, meaning ‘cross-bearing’, comes from the Latin ‘crux’, meaning ‘cross’, and cruciferous vegetables are vegetables of the mustard family: various cabbages/ broccoli/ cauliflower/ Brussels sprouts. They take their name from the shape of their flowers, whose four petals are in the shape of a cross. At other times, the name will refer to a distinctive feature of the flower. Flowers which are lipped will have the word cheilanthus in their name, such as Delphinium cheilanthum or Cheilanthus, the lip-fern, a hardy dwarf variety which is suitable for shade and goes very well in a rock garden. If they are two-lipped (but not tulips, hohoho), you will see the word ringens, such as Salvia ringens, or Mimulus ringens, which has a lavender-coloured flower which is divided into an upper lip and a larger, swollen lower lip. Finally, sometimes it is not only the shape of the individual flowers that is described, but the shape of the whole flowerhead. So, Campanula glomerata and Convolvulus glomeratus have their flowers clustered together, glomeratus meaning ‘collected together’. Well, I hope that has helped understand plant labels on flowering plants a little better. Next time, the shape of the leaves of plants as described in Latin. So little time for so much enjoyment....

We have been made aware of some new scams which we would like to alert you to. 1: The regular - “this is Microsoft calling and you have a problem with your machine, please can we connect to it and show you….” has developed. We have heard of a customer who fell victim to this and started to become suspicious, so asked the scammers to stop, at which point they deleted all the user’s data on his PC. Just remember, Microsoft would not telephone you. 2: Email scam - this has been reported by both AOL and BT/Yahoo email customers, and indicates their emails are not secure. The user received an expected email, with an invoice attached from a known tradesperson - let’s say, their plumber. Shortly after, the user receives another email from supposedly the plumber, saying something like “please ignore the previous mail, use this one”. On inspection, the attachment is present, but the bank details on the invoice have been changed to the scammer’s account. The only way this could have happened is if the scammer is actually monitoring and using the user’s email account. If you are concerned this is happening to you, our advice is to change your email password two or three times in a week. Ransomware Ransomware has been in the limelight for 18 months

or so, commonly activated by opening an attachment in an email. Once it is activated, all your data files on your PC, back-up drives and connected devices become encrypted either immediately or at some designated time in the future. The user then receives a message stating that their data has become encrypted and that they should call a phone number within x number of days to have the data unencrypted, otherwise it will be lost forever. In January, Lincolnshire County Council was hit by a Ransomware attack. The demand was for £1m, and it closed the council for several days. Currently, there are only two ways to get your data back from this attack: 1: Recover your data from an unaffected backup 2: Pay the ransom Just remember - your data is probably more valuable to you than the equipment. With our Total Care Support Plan, we back up your data to our cloud. We have had some customers who have been subjected to Ransomware attacks and we have recovered all their data. In all cases, Action Fraud have been informed. Should you like further information on these issues or wish to discuss your own security, please do not hesitate to contact us or Action Fraud. Action Fraud can be contacted on 0300 123 2040 or www.actionfraud.police.uk

am very fortunate to have interviewed David Bowie on a number of occasions, stretching back to 1969. I think of him laughing and joking, as he often used to see how far he could push the boundaries. In fact, I used to think of him as someone who enjoyed shock and surprise and always staying one step ahead of the rest of the rock pack. Funnily enough, he wasn’t actually consumed by rock and pop, but rather, he saw himself as an artist who just happened to be working in pop, and was just as interested in painting, film, fashion and literature. I first met him in ’69 when he flew to Luxembourg to bring me a copy of his album, The Man Who Sold the World. It’s the one with him reclining on the front cover, wearing a dress. Subsequent releases of this album on different labels changed the cover art, as the original was deemed to be too controversial. A bit like the man himself when he arrived in the Grand Duchy with waistlength hair. He certainly confused the locals who hadn’t ever seen his like before in the sleepy capital. However, the attention he brought upon himself didn’t phase him and he seemed to thrive on the whispers and stares. He wasn’t one for discussing his family, except when

it came to his brother Terry, who was being treated for mental issues at the time. Bowie spoke of his sibling with a great deal of affection and dedicated one of the album’s songs to him, entitled All the Mad Men. In a cab, we sat next to each other, and at one point, he put his arm around me, which took me a little by surprise but there was nothing untoward about it. He would later court controversy when he appeared on Top of the Pops in 1972 and embraced guitarist Mick Ronson in front of the nation. In 1973, he invited me to join him, along with The Spiders From Mars, at a chateau in France where he was recording Pin-Ups. A very special occasion! My favourite Bowie era though was 1975 when he toured with the awesome album, Station to Station. Ironically, despite his energy and mesmerising artistry, it was a low point for his health and well-being, and propelled him to move and make music in Berlin and New York. There’s just so much to say about this amazing artist and it was a fitting tribute that his final album, Black Star, topped the American chart, a feat he hadn’t managed in his lifetime.

TED MACAULEY TEST DRIVES THE NEW RANGE ROVER TDV6 VOGUE

Forgive my retrospection, but I’ve got two outsanding reasons to recall my latest trip to exotic Dubai ...well, three if you count the pleasure of seeing my trim Trophy Wife in her bikinis. While I was covering the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for my newspaper outlets here and in the Arab haven, I stayed over at the splendid beachside Royal Mirage Hotel in Dubai. And that blessed me with my first treat - a chance meeting with Carry On and Eastenders queen, Barbara Windsor - now dubbed “Dame” - and her utterly charming hubby Scott. For the next five days, it was my and TW’s joy to share shelter from the rays with national treasure Babs who was anecdotally fascinating and funny and ever-so-revealing about her days in the iconic, smash-hit movie series for which she was paid a pittance. Regrettably, I had to break off our burgeoning friendship to attend the Grand Prix, 60odd miles away at the other end of the Sheikh Zayad road, probably the scariest stretch of highway on the planet. My three journeys - for practice, qualifying and race - were more excitingly edgy than the crash-bang-wallop wheelto-wheel Porsche Supercup event around the tricky Yas Marina circuit.

Ferraris, Lambos, Aston Martins, Rolls Royces and Bentleys, all playthings of mega-wealthy Arab show-offs and oligarchs, diced in a madcap stampede, swapping the six lanes without bothering to signal their intent or apparently looking where they were going. And that brought me to my second memorable and thankful - reason to remember my visit to the Emirates. Sound a fanfare for the Range Rover, a luxurious bully of a 4x4, a veritable motorised barricade, my massive safeguard against the threatening and unwary onrush on the 50-minute hellfire journey... I was confident there would be only one winner if I was clouted by one of the flashy £200,000, 180mph supercars: my heavyweight and macho RR...more than two tonnes of it. If I’d had to dodge the madcap rush and take an alternative escape route over a rocky mountain, splash through a river up to 900mm or scramble over the most treacherous of tricky terrains, it would all have come as a pushover to this 3.0-litre romper just by leaving its Terrain Response offroad software in auto. And in sheer executive-class comfort with legroom in abundance. I sat throne-like, upright and all-seeing,

hoisted above the threatening hoi-polloi, behind a broad-shouldered bonnet that stretched defensively ahead and which hid an engine of mighty power without disquieting noise, that yearned to be put into action and responded with a hearteningly efficient return. Only two of us, TW and me, trailed luxuriously to Abu Dhabi and back over three days and we had all the space you could possibly want with a 994-litre boot, more than ample for her walletbusting shopping spree in downtown Dubai’s magnificent and giant shopping mall on restful Day Four. The melee of motors on that deadstraight road through the desert felt no threat at all from my lofty, all-seeing perch and the car’s cockpit innards were a total treat... first-class lounge comfy seats and easy-to-read instruments without a clutter of confusing buttons to press. But most and best of all was the feeling of absolute security, like a fortress on wheels. And the superb allround visibility from its cinemascopic windscreen. Snooty really, but far more importantly, as safe as houses. Specification: Model TDV6 Vogue. Engine 3.0-litre. BHP 258. Top speed 130mp. Zero60mph 7.4 seconds MPG 37.7. Price £74,950.

JONQUIL AND BLOODSTONE A Short Story by Ange Treanor

Lily leant over her reflection one final time. Her once-alluring visage was now withered and her skin crinkled and paper-thin. Fat droplets of rain rolled off her face, like tears. She watched helplessly as her watery likeness distorted and rippled away, mirroring her ebbing life. Longing to see the sun one last time, she forced her fading golden head upwards, but she was greeted with no warmth. Dark swirling images formed and broke above her, like waves. Though time was short, she waited, but the angry sky denied her even a glimpse of the tantalising blue that lay beyond. The chill wind made her tremble, but her frail frame no longer felt the cold. Instead, she drew warmth from the smiles that she and her sisters had once coaxed from the icy lips of passers-by. They had all stood together, her family, proudly displaying their pretty bonnets for all to see. A promise of better things to come, after the bleakest of winters. She had been the last to arrive. She recalled looking up at her siblings, tall and beautiful. How she’d longed to grow quickly, to be just like them, to be with them. Now she stood alone. She gazed down at their broken corpses, scattered all around. She would be joining them soon. All living things must return to the soil. It’s how the circle completes. How new life begins. Today it would be her turn, to give in, to give back. She had accepted it. She’d known all along that she’d never feel the balmy heat of summer. That was the privilege of others. One last glance at the sun would have been a comfort though, but sadly, it wasn’t to be. It was the month of the Bloodstone, and Lady Day was upon her. She felt nature’s breath on her face as Mother embraced her one last time. The river and wind sang a lullaby and the trees mournfully whispered her name. ‘Narcissus.’

e have seen a recent “spike” in thefts of bicycles, stolen from garages, sheds and outbuildings. It has been quite a shock to me to realise just how expensive some makes of modern bikes are, but I’m sure many of you will already know that. For those who don’t, we are talking several thousands of pounds for just one bike!! In comparison with a house, an outbuilding, remote garage block or garden shed is never going to be as secure, so it is worth considering the actual replacement value of items you choose to store in these places. I have mentioned previously (but it’s worth reiterating) that you can make items of gardening equipment very undesirable to thieves by making them easily identifiable. Simply painting your house name or number and/or postcode on an item with gloss paint makes it far less likely to be attractive to a thief. The items are still totally useable but the effort involved in removing the identifying paint marks is, I have found, far too much to make stealing them worthwhile.

T H E F T

If you have to store bikes in sheds, garages and outbuildings, you could consider chaining them to the floor or to another heavy object. If you are storing more than one bike, then chaining them together makes them far more difficult to remove. You can also register your bike on a secure database, such as www.immobilise.com - and we can provide tamperproof stickers, each with a unique serial number that can be used as an identifier on the database. Just contact us on molevalley@surrey.pnn.police.uk or call 01483 630370 to speak to our Office Manager, Andy Reid. Also, putting an inexpensive batterypowered alarm in sheds, garages and outbuildings can be a very effective deterrent. These alarms are motion activated and emit an audible alarm of around 140 decibels, which is quite often very effective in sending an intruder running in the opposite direction. The deterrent effect can be enhanced by displaying signs that warn that a security alarm is in use. The batteries tend to last for around 12 months and the units are readily available in most DIY stores or via the internet – sometimes retailing for less than £5.
