Another month has flown by and we move one step closer to another glorious British summer, I’m sure. I love the lighter evenings, all we need now is a little less rain and a little more sunshine and all will be well! I enjoyed an evening with the Bookham WI Belles recently; they hosted a wonderful shopping and pampering evening at Manor House School in Bookham. It was great to meet some of the members and the exhibitors and I’m delighted to share a selection of our photographs of the event with you this month. You might recognise a few familiar faces…. They are a lovely bunch of ladies, and if you are interested in joining their ranks, do get in touch. It will soon be time for the green-fingered members of the community to open up their gardens to local residents again. Bookham Open Gardens makes a wonderful day out, see inside for details … Congratulations must go to our lovely Bookham Residents’ Association this month who will be celebrating 90 years since their formation. And what wonderful company they keep too. Fancy sharing their celebration year with the Queen! We have a great competition this month, prize kindly provided by Mr Ted Macauley. If you like driving in Europe, this little gem of a book is a must-have, so please send your answers in and we will announce the winner in the June magazine. Good luck ! Have a great month, Bookham! Warmest regards,
Ros Thomas Editor

ASK BRUCE:
MY DOG IS OBSESSED WITH OUR CAT.
This month, reader Fiona McDonald asks how to stop her one-year-old dog from pestering their cat. This is a common problem, and while each dog, cat and household situation is different, some general dog training rules apply. At Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, we’re big on dog training and have an excellent dog trainer, Andy Weaver, who regularly visits our centres to teach our staff. So we asked Andy for his views. He explained that the best way to deal with any dog training problem is to confront it and train through it, rather than avoid it. Andy suggests you take control of bringing the dog and cat together, rather than allowing them to meet freely. So, have them in the same room with the dog’s bed, keep the dog on the lead and ask her to lie down on her bed, while allowing the cat to roam around. This supervised introduction lets your dog see the cat is just another member of the family and she will become used to the cat being around while under your control. Keep repeating the exercise over time, from five minutes to 10 minutes and so on. Eventually, the novelty of the cat will wear off with your dog and they will happily co-exist – they may even become best buddies! Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Cobham. Great Bookham Belles WI
Pamper and Shopping Evening for members and their guests
T
he Great Bookham Belles WI held a Pamper and Shopping Evening for members and their guests at their March meeting. A new wave of WI, the Great Bookham Belles was setup 17 months ago, following demand for a new group in the Bookham area. With a membership of 120 and an age range of 32 – 72, the WI is a place to learn new skills and make new friends whilst having fun. Members and their guests were able to peruse the many stalls from local businesses, or have a catch-up with
friends over tea and cake in the Bluebell Café. After shopping and chatting, relaxation was available, with seven therapists on hand providing mini-treatments, from back and hand massages to reflexology and nail painting. President of Great Bookham Belles WI, Amanda Edge, said, “The hall was filled with joy and laughter. It was a wonderful evening celebrating local women in business. Our members enjoyed massages, beauty treatments, food and chocolates and all whilst fundraising for our WI”.

Gardens of bookham open day SUNDAY 19TH JUNE 2016 10.00AM TO 5.00PM Do come and join in this annual event, where over 700 people enjoy going round the village, meeting their friends and neighbours along the way. Get your programme in advance (see below) and start planning your route! This year, we’re featuring around 12 varied and attractive private gardens, as well as The Grange, Little Bookham Allotments and, for the first time, the extensive gardens at Manor House School (who provide one of our minibuses). As well as old favourites, we’re delighted to feature three private gardens opening for the very first time. Our garden owners will give you a warm welcome and provide you with the opportunity to pick up ideas for your own garden and answer your questions, or you can simply enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The gardens come in all sizes and feature a variety of different planting themes and imaginative landscaping ideas. Some also demonstrate how to grow things to eat, including a garden with many plants you wouldn’t realise were edible, and where you can learn more about permaculture and ‘forest garden’ principles. Several gardens feature wildlife ponds and you’ll be able to find out which sorts of plantings and habitats will help attract wildlife to your garden. Plants will be available to buy at several locations, including the Allotments and The Grange. Find out more about individual gardens in the programme. Open Gardens Day raises money for the upkeep of our historic Old Barn Hall, and over the years, we’ve raised well over £45,000. Delicious home-baked cakes, rolls
and drinks will be served throughout the day at the Hall, and there will also be the opportunity to visit some stalls, including some from the Bookham Country Market. Once again, there will be a raffle with lots of great prizes donated by local firms, people and organisations. Tickets (available from 16th May): £5.00 in advance, or £6.00 on the day. Wheelchair users £3, carers free. Regret no dogs. Includes admission to all gardens & a free minibus service along the route. * Vineries Garden Centre, Lower Rd (our main sponsors) * Weale’s Store, Little Bookham Street * Wishing Well, 7 High Street * Bungalow Stores, Beckley Parade * Contact Cards, 228 Cobham Rd, Fetcham * East Horsley News, 19 Station Parade, Ockham Rd South, * Village Day, 18th June * The Old Barn Hall office, Church Road (Tel 01372 456307. BOOKHAM
RE SID EN TS ’ AS S O C I AT I O N CELEBRATING
ITS
It is quite likely that the Bookhams Residents’ Association (BRA) goes back even further than 90 years, as the War Memorial at St.Nicolas Church was erected by the Bookham Ratepayers’ Association around 1919. This must have been a forerunner to the BRA, and reading through some of the older newsletters, it is interesting to see how many familiar issues recur, as well as new challenges. It says a lot for the village that, as an organisation, the BRA has stood this test of time well and membership now extends to over 3,000 households. Finding room in this short space to list all the achievements during the last 90 years is impossible, but there have been some very significant and vitally important contributions to village life in both Great and Little Bookham, as well as some notable UK events in the corresponding years. 1926 - The BRA is founded. The future Queen Elizabeth II is born. 1936 - The BRA is involved in the proposal to install street lighting, estimated cost per annum £485 for gas, £800 for electricity. King George V dies; Edward VIII abdicates. 1946 - The BRA officially adopts its new name, having been known previously as the Bookham Ratepayers’ Association. First commercial flight from Heath Row (as it was originally known) 1956 - The BRA plays its part in retaining the Gilmais Swimming Pool. Chris Brasher wins gold at the Melbourne Olympics. 1966 - The BRA & Bookham Community Association form closer links. England wins the World Cup at Wembley Stadium.
90
90
TH
ANNIVERSARY
1976 - The BRA membership subscription is set at £1 per household. The UK enjoys the hottest summer on record. 1986 - The BRA organises a major ‘litter pick’ scheme. Plans for the Channel Tunnel are agreed. 1996 - The BRA assists the Scouts in establishing a Scouting Centre. The Prince and Princess of Wales complete their divorce after 15 years of marriage. 2006 - The BRA membership subscription increases to £2 per household - the first increase for 30 years! The BRA actively promotes ‘Bookham 2010’, a wideranging project seeking the views of the community regarding Bookham’s future. Paul McCartney turns 64 after writing ‘When I’m SixtyFour’ aged 16. 2016 - BRA members vote for the Association to become a Company Limited by Guarantee. UK referendum on whether to leave or stay within the EU. The BRA celebrates its 90th anniversary. Queen Elizabeth II celebrates her 90th birthday.

Linseed Baps MA K ES 6 - 8 BA P S
I am hugely excited about this recipe - another stunning idea from the Hemsley sisters that all my team love, so I’ve simplified it a tad and here we are. Linseeds (flaxseeds) are good for you in every way possible - omegas, gut, anticancer and on it goes - this recipe is so perfect for the lunch box. I’m loving making a giant sandwich with avocado, red onion, smoked salmon, salady bits, lemon or lime and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. Amazing!
Ingredients
150g ground linseeds (dark or light – just grind in blender if you can only get whole ones)
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda Just under a tsp of sea salt Pinch of black pepper 3 eggs, beaten ½ tbsp maple syrup 2 tbsp lemon juice or apple cider vinegar 3 tbsps coconut oil, melted (or butter) 3 tbsps water ½ tsp dried herbs or Bruised fennel/caraway seeds
Method
1. Prehead the oven to fan 180°C/Gas 6. Line baking tray with baking parchment. 2. Mix the dry ingredients together with a fork. Beat in the remaining ingredients & leave the batter to rest for 5 mins to thicken up (a little more if you think it needs it). 3. Spoon the batter onto the baking sheets to make the baps. You can decide what size you like - I always go larger & use an ice cream scoop to help with size. Using wet hands, press down lightly if they have not spread out themselves ( I find they often flatten on their own). 4. Bake in the oven for 20 - 22 mins until the buns spring back to touch. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. 6. To serve, either sandwich two together or carefully cut each bap in half horizontally to fill - I usually go for the first option! A note that they freeze brilliantly too.

LOOKING FOR
DOG
LOVERS!
I am looking to add to my existing team of genuine dog lovers who enjoy looking after dogs when their owners go on holiday. This does not have to be a full time commitment. Some of my carers only offer weekends or school holidays. You must be at home during the day with no more than 1 dog of your own & no children under 6 years of age & have your own secure garden. Ideal for someone working from home, a school teacher or administrator, house person or retired.

This month, I want to pay tribute to Peter Whitehead and his team who recently organised a very successful Claygate Music Festival. Among the wonderful artists to appear this year at the Village Hall and the Holy Trinity Church were Rick Wakeman, Martin Turner, a founder member of Wishbone Ash, Neil Innes, once of the Bonzo Dog band and an excellent Blues line-up which featured Brooks Williams (an amazing guitarist who hails from American’s Deep South), the Fran McGillivray Band from East London and Tony Devenport who sounds at times like Richie Havens. On his album, he compares with Marvin Gaye The Blues night was organised by Peter, along with Roger McCormick and Felix Riley who both broadcast on our hyperlocal internet radio station, Brooklands Radio (brooklandsradio.co.uk). Brooklands Radio is a not-for-profit radio station which has been broadcasting on the internet for 7 years, reflecting the latest news, travel and events in Surrey. Felix, a former Radio 1 producer, is a comedy writer and Roger was a lawyer in the City for many years and now runs a research foundation, as well as being a part-time university lecturer. Roger has a lifelong love of rock and blues and says he can’t give up his love of the music he grew up with and doesn’t want to try. I really enjoy The Blues Hour, co-hosted by Roger and Felix which airs Friday night at 11pm, as well as Cool Connections which goes out Wednesdays at 7 pm. Both shows are uploaded to Mixcloud which is free and easy to access. Just search under the name of the shows and you should find them. It makes a refreshing change to hear presenters who’ve been given carte blanche to play what they want and can therefore genuinely enthuse over their musical choices. With it’s eclectic mix of music and chat, it’s good to know that Elmbridge is so well covered and that the future of community radio is in safe hands.

ENGAGED by Sylvia Herbert
Head down, they cross the concourse. eyes mesmerised by a small screen; although they stay on track some look perplexed, others intent, and others still, their faces bright with smiles, delight in private fun. We do not feature in their secret lives so publicly displayed An upward glance to check which line they want, then down again, they’re on their way, their busy fingers texting family, friends, maybe a lover, who can say? Muffled voices, shrill ring tones, welded to ear the precious mobile phones. Sometimes two figures will collide like bumping cars, robots whose remote control has failed; a brief ‘I’m sorry’, then again away into their world of truth or fantasy.

TOO FAR

My children are far away but not dead. Talk is difficult. The line fast fades into an icicle frozen by words for a minute in space. The contact melts, dripping slowly into my lost tears. My children speak brightly from thousands of hot miles away. My heart freezes and fractures silently. Photos of time gone ice up my brain into tiny frosted parts. Memories may be forgotten.

GARDENING M AT T E R S
As I sit here writing this at the very end of March, the rain is hammering down, and we have just experienced Storm Katie, bless her evil little heart. Hopefully, as you read this, the sun is out and it has started to warm up. Strange weather so far this year. Anyway, the Latin for the overall shape of plants... Some words will be very familiar: eg it is easy to deduce that the Lawson’s cypress Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Columnaris’ shape is columnar or pillar-like in shape, and that the non-climbing ivy Hedera helix ‘Erecta’ has erect shoots. Also familiar will be prostratus, referring to a plant that grows close to the ground, such as Veronica prostrata, which forms a mat of small blue flowers, and Abies procera ‘Glauca prostrata’, a beautiful blue-grey conifer which grows as spreading ground cover. And a plant containing the name compactus will be easy to guess as....erm yes, compact or dense, such as Euonymus alatus ‘Compactus’, or Berberis darwinii ‘Compacta’. Decumbens also means prostrate, but with the slight difference that it also indicates that the tips of the shoots are upright. An example of this is Cistus x lusitanicus ‘Decumbens’, a small, low-growing evergreen rock rose with a spreading habit. If the shoots of a plant are creeping along the ground, it may be referred to as reptans, meaning crawling or creeping, as in Ajuga reptans. Globosa will show that the plant is round/globeshaped, like Cryptomeria japonica ‘Globosa Nana’, a dwarf, dome-shaped Japanese cedar. As regards branches, diffusus may be used to describe a plant whose spreading branches have a diffused shape, such as Aster diffusus, or Lithadora diffusa, a beautiful little low-growing shrub with a wide mat of deep blue
flowers. Plants that have their branches close together and erect often have fastigiatus/fastigiata in their name, as with Cotoneaster fastigiatus, or Ilex crenata ‘Fastigiata’, the Japanese holly. At the opposite extreme, plants whose branches or shoots are turned sharply down may have deflexus as part of their name, eg Enkianthus deflexus, a vigorous upright shrub with hanging clusters of bell-shaped flowers. The stems are also important in the naming of some plants. Those with angular stems may have angularis/ angulatum in their names, eg Jasminum angulare and Geranium angulatum, whereas those with winged stems will have the name alatus/alata somewhere: eg Nicotiana alata and Passiflora alata. Where there is a greater tendency towards crooked stems, you may see the specific name contorta. Maybe the best-known example of this is the corkscrew hazel Corylus avellana ‘Contorta’, whose branches are highly twisted and contorted. Gracilis will tell you that the plant is graceful or slender, as with Galanthus gracilis, the slender snowdrop, or the hardy fuchsia Fuchsia magellanica var. gracilis, with its graceful, arching branches. And I think that’s enough for this time. Plenty more Latin to come, though, so see you back here next month, same place...and I really hope this is a help to some of you.

COMPETITION Driving abroad, especially for the first time, can be a costly and nightmare situation to the unwary, a confusing experience with the unfamiliar traps of local laws and prohibitions lurking to dig deep into your holiday savings. A familiarising read-up before you venture where you have never previously been makes good sense - and that is why experienced motoring enthusiast Julian Parish’s “Essential Guide to Driving in Europe” is a gem of a paperback to avoid falling into traps that ensnare so many innocents abroad. Just released by Veloce Publishing for just under a tenner, it is an A-to-U guide...Austria to the Ukraine...of just about everything you need to know and plan for your upcoming drive through wherever your journey is set to take you across the Channel. All the key facts on how to stay legal in 50 countries, speed limits, road signs, local regulations and even what to do if you are a car crime victim or involved in a smash-up, are lucidly assembled.
In short, it’s a real treat, so handy and informative and superb value for money. I am giving away one FREE to the winner of our competition,

ike all new ventures, it could have been a dis-Astra area, but Vauxhall’s seventh generation model of the marque looks like a surefire success. And close-fought rivals Ford Focus, VW and Peugeot will feel a blow on their bankings as this punchy fiveseater, lighter but roomier than its predecessors, makes its hit on the hatchback front. I confess I’ve never been a fan of what I regarded as staid and uninspiring efforts by Vauxhall’s stuck-in-the-mud designers, but bless ‘em, they have won me over with this curvy and sculpted nimble newcomer. And I forecast the new-look, revitalised, re-designed and re-engineered challenger to every other hatch on the planet will find a niche among those of us who like looks underpinned by economic values, offering a sensible reason to spend. It’s as if the drawing board users at Vauxhall HQ have listened to the dissatisfied bleats of the likes of you and me and converted them to what will be songs of praise for the new wave of Astra, one the UK’s staple
feeds to a value-hungry mass of wouldbe owners. From a practical standpoint, with five seats and a cabin roomy enough for a six-foot passenger to sit behind a sixfoot driver, the Astra has mastered entry into the comfort zone, generally a rarity among near-budget cars. Ironically, the new threat to the old rivals is slightly smaller on the outside but more spacious inside than its older sibling, and the information and help kit is clear and well-ordered, with an uncomplicated touch-screen. What’s more - and this is a real handy breakthrough - there is a device dubbed OnStar. Let me explain: it is a highbandwidth connection and permanent link to a call centre and tracking process. Dead easy to use, an answer to any SOS. All you do, if needs urgently be, is call the operator and he/she will give you traffic updates, or download, say, an address to your satnav without any need to be poking distractingly at the screen with your fingers. If you’re unlucky enough to suffer a crash, the controller, taking advantage of a powerful antenna and connection
with its wi-fit hotspot, can summon help - and just in case you forget to switch off and don’t want to risk the rain and leave the dinner table, you can lock the whole system from your phone. There is only one body style, but you have the choice of eight engines, five petrol and three diesel. If you want a quickie, then go for the 1.6 turbo, but for my money, the real star of the Astra show is the petrol-drinker 1.4-litre 3 cylinder turbo. Steering, lightweight and ultrasensitive, and sooper-dooper efficient brakes that don’t snatch make for a relaxing experience, whether you are skedaddling around twisty country lanes or in the melee of motorway madness. All in all, and fittingly, in the words of my old Royal Air Force service motto “Per ardua ad astra”... “Through Adversity to the Stars”, the adversity in this instance being a whole range of rivals now really up against it.... Specification: Vauxhall Astra 1.4T. BHP 150. Top speed 134 mph. 0-60 in 7.8 seconds. MPG 51.4.Price £19,595.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN SECURITY PRODUCTS
P
art of my job as a Crime Reduction Advisor is to keep up to date on new developments in security products. Every week, I get to hear about a new idea or product that is being launched, claiming to offer enhanced security to home owners and businesses. Some of these products seem very promising but I am loath to recommend them until I have seen some evidence that they are actually effective. One of the most exciting developments in home security in recent years, however, is the availability of forensic DNA property marking for home use. Now it’s possible to mark your own property with an ultra-violet product that actually incorporates a DNA trace that is registered to the owner of the marking kit. In addition, some products even include microdots which can make identification of property even easier. To give you a “head start” in researching this type of security product, I can mention one - SelectaDNA - which Surrey Police has been using very successfully for some time (and before anyone asks, I am not getting any commission from the company!!). Virtually any item can be marked safely and discreetly, including household items, garden equipment, garden paving and statuary, jewellery, pictures and items of furniture. If a stolen item is recovered by police, it is always checked to see if there is any identifying mark, which includes scanning with UV light. These products
can enable officers to trace items back to their registered owner quickly. If a microdot is present, the process involves a simple telephone call, giving the serial number on the microdot. If there is only a UV DNA trace, then a tiny sample can be sent in to the manufacture of the marking kit and the owner’s details can be provided within days. There are several companies which market this type of product, each offering slightly different services to their customers. It is up to the individual to decide which type of product meets their needs. I would emphasise, however, that people should really consider doing everything possible to safeguard their property and possessions. Many people tend to forget that garden equipment, such as lawn mowers, leaf blowers, hedge trimmers etc, can add up to a considerable value and would certainly be costly to replace if stolen. No shed can be considered totally secure but it is really important not to make items easy to steal. Sheds should always be secured with a sturdy lock or padlock and it is worth marking larger items with your post code in gloss paint (or consider UV DNA property marking). Making items easily identifiable makes them less popular to thieves. In more rural areas, many people have larger items of equipment stored in sheds, barns or outbuildings. Do try to make them secure, and again, consider property marking.

May is an exciting month for us at Bookham Library, as we’re having our glorious new self-service machines installed. They are already in place in lots of other libraries in Surrey and readers have commented that they’re very straightforward to use (we’ll show you how), and it gives them an extra level of privacy in choosing their books. It will mean you won’t have to queue to see one of us at busy times (giving you more time to browse!) and you’ll have the freedom to pay off any charges through them. It will be a change for us, but the aim is to give us more time to maintain the library, look after the stock, and spend time with you, our readers, dealing with complex information enquiries, recommending books (the staff are really knowledgeable!) and helping you find exactly what you need. We look forward to showing you how to use our new gadgets! See you soon!
MORE TO EXPLORE IN YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY! Townshott Close (next to the Baptist Church) We’re open: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday 10.00-5pm, Sat 9.30-5pm
