I am writing this introduction, several weeks before it will reach you. As a result, with news and advice changing daily with regard to the Covid-19/Corona Virus, it is very difficult for us to predict the situation by the time our magazine reaches your home. As a community lead publication, our pages are always full of local events and activities for you to read about and more importantly attend. It takes us all month to collect/collate & compile our events listings and as a result, it is impossible for us to change or remove all these entries as our print press awaits our magazines now. Groups and organisations may decide to cancel or postpone their published events, so please check with the organisers before you go along. Do remember that we include a wonderful collection of local businesses and services for you to take advantage of, maybe now is the time to sort out all those little jobs you haven’t had time to organise before. It is important that we continue to support our local businesses. We all need to focus on what really matters during testing times; we have been very touched at the level of concern locally for the elderly members of our community. A group called ‘Corona Community Care’ has been set up with just this in mind, many local people are keen to help elderly neighbours or those who are having to self isolate and need help. Please see page 8 for details. Simple acts of kindness could make a massive difference to someone’s life. As the main recommendation for keeping well, is good hand hygiene, we have enclosed an official hand washing guide. This is so important and seems to be the number one way to cut your risk of being infected by the virus. Soap and water will do the job, follow the recommended methods and keep your hands away from you face as far as possible. Stay safe good people and I wish you all a peaceful Easter. With Best Regards,
Ros

COMMUNITY FRIDGE After watching a TV program that featured a Community Fridge and learning how this reduced the enormous amount of food ending up in land fill, the idea to have one in here in Bookham started to develop. When the concept was adopted by the Trustees of The Meeting Place, and the leaders of Bookham Baptist Church agreed that it could be sited on their premises, what seemed to be a good idea, started to become an exciting new project that was close becoming a reality. The basic idea is very simple, shops selling fresh produce are able to donate to the fridge rather than discard produce that can no longer be sold on their shelves but is still safe to consume. The food is available to anyone, whatever their need. Local shopkeepers were onboard with the idea, but many do not have much that goes to waste, so in order to keep a steady supply of goods, we have had to look to the larger supermarkets too. We are often amazed when we make a collection at the variety of goods that would have been thrown away: Birthday cakes, flowers, dry goods, fruit, vegetables, salad, bread and pastries. In February, our first month of operating, we distributed 160Kilos of goods that would otherwise have ended up in landfill. In 7 collections from one supermaket, we have picked up 117kg of food, the equivalent of 278 meals making a saving of 374kg of CO2 emissions! Win Win! We would like to thank Hylands Garage, Pearce’s Bakery, Laytons Greengrocers, Wishing Well, The Co-op in Bookham, Budgens in East Horsley, Waitrose and Tesco for their support in this venture. There are a lot of grateful recipients who tell us that having this facility makes a real difference to them. Wellers Hedleys Solicitors saw the fridge in operation and loved the idea; they decided that we should become their chosen charity for Wills Month in May. Having this financial support will allow us to purchase a bigger fridge and a bigger freezer, thus increasing our storage capacity and give us more supply options for the future. We are delighted by their generosity. The Fridge is open when the Meeting Place Coffee Shop is in operation at the Baptist Church on Monday, Friday and Saturday Mornings.
THE MEETING PLACE The Meeting Place is well-established in Bookham and we are already in contact with many groups in the community through our existing activities which aim to reduce isolation and strengthen our sense of community and belonging. We run a Language Hub offering classes to those whose first language isn’t English on Tuesday mornings. Our Coffee Shop operates on three mornings a week, and itself acts as a hub for services such as Hearing Champions. We also offer Lip Reading classes on Monday afternoons for anyone who finds their hearing loss isolating. For more information please visit our website www.themeetingplacebokham.org.uk and follow us on Facebook. * Please check before you attend during the Covid- 19 period incase of restrictions.

Gardening Matters MULCHES
As I sit here in early March, we’ve had wall-to-wall rain for what seems like 63 weeks, boooo. However, there may be the odd day in the near future when you’ll need to retain moisture in your garden (pahahahaha), and mulching is a good way to do that, so here are some suggestions for mulches to bung on your patch. Mulches are best applied mid to late spring and autumn when the soil is moist (no worries there) and warm. Avoid applying them in winter/early spring when the soil’s cold or in summer when it’s dry. They’re spread over bare soil or on the surface of compost in containers and are either biodegradable or nonbiodegradable. As the name suggests, biodegradable mulches break down gradually to release nutrients into the soil and help improve its structure. Lack of space prevents a comprehensive list, but the usual suspects are composted stable manure, garden compost, leaf mould, bark and Strulch. Stable manure adds nitrogen and other nutrients to the soil, is widely available in this area, usually for free, but can smell yucky, isn’t very attractive and often contains weed seeds - because that’s what horses eat. It should be well-aged and/or heat-treated. Garden compost is also free and is as available as you’ve made it. As long as you’ve avoided adding perennial weeds to your compost heap/bin, it’s a good solution but takes a while to rot down sufficiently. Leaf mould is readily available if

you’ve bagged it up the year before, but it needs at least a year to rot down, isn’t very attractive and you’ll need ONE HELL of a lot of bags to provide for an average garden. Bark exists in practically every garden centre. It’s longlasting, attractive and doesn’t blow away easily, but it’s relatively pricey and the pigeons have a right old time kicking it all over the place. But my most recent discovery, my one of choice now is… Strulch. This is an AMAZING product made from mineralised straw and I’d never heard of it until a customer introduced it to me (thank you, Helen). It’s very light, it suppresses weeds, doesn’t hold water (so rainfall can soak through to the soil), goes a very long way, and best of all, lasts for up to 2 years before degrading. Take a look at the website for more information: http://www.strulch. co.uk Non-biodegradable mulches, including slate, shingle, pebbles and gravel, don’t add nutrients but have the advantage of looking decorative. However, they can be costly and weeds have a nasty habit of pushing up between the gaps unless you lay membrane underneath. All in all, biodegradable mulches tick most of the boxes. As well as retaining moisture in summer, biodegradable mulches protect the roots of plants in winter, improve soil texture, encourage worms and can help prevent weeds, so what’s not to love? Mulch away.

SPIES & ASSASSINS IN OUR MIDST! Surrey folk are no more suspicious of espionage than anyone else, but Lorraine Spindler’s February lecture on spies and assassins in our midst, drew the biggest audience for a year to the Leatherhead Institute. As actor Michael Caine is one of the town’s best known current residents, it made sense to begin with a picture of him, as fictional spy Harry Palmer in his film, The Ipcress File. But as former Leatherhead Museum Curator Lorraine said, truth is stranger than fiction. She started with the case of Russian migrant Alexander Perepilichnyy, who died suddenly in 2012, near his £3 million Weybridge home. He had been on a Kremlin hit list and had been helping uncover a £150 million money-laundering operation. He had also had a runin with former KGB agent Dmitry Kovtun who met ex-spy Alexander Litvinenko just hours before he was poisoned in London. No friend of Vladimir Putin, was Mr Perepilichnyy working for British intelligence? We don’t know. In the 1930s Nazi Germany threatened. Members of the Hitler Youth cycled around England, including Surrey, spying on the terrain. In 1938 the Czech

Czech language was heard in the village, but few people knew there was a Special Operations Executive training centre there, as well as a prisoner of war camp for German officers. Lorraine Spindlar and Villa Bellasis at Derek Summerfield Headley trained Czech paratroopers. Josef and Jan learned skills in motorised vehicles, Morse Code, orientation, shooting and throwing hand grenades before the RAF dropped them back into their occupied country, to fight with the local resistance. Lorraine told of an interviewee who remembered walking in the countryside nearby and meeting two mysterious strangers who asked curious questions. German radio equipment was afterwards found dumped in a water storage system in Leatherhead. Canadian forces were based in Surrey for much of the war, a natural source of interest to the Germans. In 1940 a new 7th Corps came into existence, headquartered at Headley Court. Heated flight suits used by airmen on D-Day were secretly produced in Banstead. During the Cold War too there were secret activities in Surrey. In the 1960s, M15 watchers appeared at Guildford Police Station and remained for many days, waiting. One day a mysterious caller arrived and told local personnel that something was about to happen. Eventually the phone rang, the office emptied and the watchers never returned. It turned out that an RAF warrant officer was spying for the Russians and made a dead letter drop in Guildford. For more information from the L&DLHS go to www.leatherheadhistory.org

FETCHAMTANDOORI.CO.UK 01372 374 927 248 COBHAM ROAD, FETCHAM, LEATHERHEAD, KT22 9JF
Fetcham Tandoori has been my Curry Restaurant of choice for too many years to mention! It is always a treat to visit this family run restaurant, which opened way back in 1983. Following a recent refurbishment and the introduction of some wonderful new dishes, it’s now better than ever. We went along one Sunday evening and Anis Haque the owner, treated us to a selection of the new regional dishes they have on the menu. The restaurant looks really lovely. It is newly decorated and tastefully elegant. No electric water fall pictures here! The service was, as always, friendly and efficient, the staff know their regular customers, but everyone is made to feel very welcome. Anis told us about his decision to introduce some new dishes, which are more authentic and more in tune with the
food he grew up eating. In fact, his own mother’s cooking is the main influence for the new menu selections, and she spent many hours in the kitchen with Anis, putting together this exciting new menu. Ingredients are sourced locally, are organic when possible and are bought daily. Suppliers include highly regarded local butcher, Conisbee and Son’s, as well as Gray’s Gelato Ice Cream from Goldstone Farm. The cooking methods have also changed. Things are done in a far more traditional way; spices are slowly roasted and ground, in-house to create wonderfully fresh flavours and vibrant colours, and the end results are like individual works of art. In the photos included here, you can see for yourself some of the food we enjoyed; the flavours were mouth watering
and it was so good to try something a little different. Dishes are inspired by, and come from, different regions such as Bangladesh and India and these include a great selection of Vegan dishes and even a little bit of street food too! Of course, all the old favourites are still available for the slightly less adventurous, but I do strongly recommend stepping out of your comfort zone. If you are a little unsure about what to order, just ask. Anis or one of his team, will be more than happy to guide you. You won’t regret it. The take away menu is a little different from the a la carte, but has also been carefully put together to still offer a great experience at home too. I take my hat off to you Fetcham Tandoori, this is surely a winning combination. Your restaurant offers
a wonderful place to eat fabulous and authentic curry dishes with friends and family, whilst at the same time experiencing something a little different, which is truly special. THANK YOU FOR A LOVELY EVENING. WE WILL BE BACK VERY SOON. The dishes we enjoyed were:Bombay Bhel Beetroot & Aloo Murug Chicken Chicken Chettinad Murug Makoni Sagolir Manksho Saffron Pilau Peshwari Naan

Bookham Wine Club
Discover what members voted ‘wines of the month’ at our Australian wine tasting … Members were treated to a selection of six excellent Australian wines from ExCellar’s Ashtead wine shop. So, how did they vote? The best white by a slight margin was ‘The Dreamer’ Viognier 2018 from Philip Shaw’s vineyard in Orange… a bright and fresh wine - delicious with seafood, shellfish, chicken, and hard or soft cheese. And, the best red? Franklin Estate Shiraz 2014. An affordable example of a classic grape - deep ruby red, and purple hued. Perfect with grilled beef and ideal for your bbq! The Australian wines tasted at our evening are available from ExCellar Ashtead, and discounts are available. Visit the BWC website for full details.
And, now to our next wine tasting on Monday April 20, when the popular wine educator Angela Bawtree makes a welcome return. Angela’s theme will be ‘Exploring Climate’ when she looks at two classic grapes Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir - and discusses how wines made from the same grapes but grown in different regions of the world can taste so different; all excellent, but each displaying subtle differences in taste and style. If you would like to join us for Angela’s presentation, or learn more about BWC’s exciting programme, then email: membership@bookhamwineclub.org.uk. Or visit: www.bookhamwineclub.org.uk.

Lost Letters is a community heritage project, funded by the Heritage Fund, to engage people across Surrey with their local history through a partnership with Surrey History Centre and the rich archives they hold. It will highlight the universality of our experiences as residents of Surrey by bringing to life the lives and experiences of our predecessors and asking for a response, by letter or through the visual arts, from current residents, who will be invited to take part. It will culminate in a book, an interactive touring exhibition and an online legacy, displaying the original letters alongside some contemporary responses. Most people can relate to the key experiences and phases of life - childhood, school, love, parenting, friends, work, home, holidays, loss, celebrations - and this project will share them through the medium of letters and visual arts, bringing to life some personal heritage of the people of Surrey and illustrating its importance, value and relevance for people living in Surrey today. Collections in the project include the frank and engaging letters of Lady Mary Wallis to her friend Mary Turner covering all aspects of living life in Surrey whilst raising a family and being married to the engineer Sir Barnes Wallis and the letters of Herbert Henry

There will be opportunities for the public to add their own responses. Get in touch now if you are interested in being involved in this project. HOME WANTED! Socksy
Socksy is 15 years young and sadly came into care when his owner went into a nursing home. He's friendly, affectionate (loves humans), cuddly, playful (he loves his catnip and fishing rod toys) and talkative He likes to sleep with several of his toys as pillows and has quite the collection of hand knitted mice his first owner made for him. He also likes to sleep next to people, and will head-bump your arm and cuddle up against you He will wake you by meowing for breakfast, and he likes having your company with him while he eats. He often has a burst of playfulness after meals.. Socksy is used to having access to a garden, but will also be happy as an indoor cat If you feel you can give Socksy his ideal, well deserved forever home please call SUE on 020 8390 3165 or email adoption@epsom.cats.org.uk Epsom Ewell & District Branch http://www.epsom.cats.org.uk If you cannot adopt a cat but would still like to help us please go to https://www.justgiving.com/Epsom-CatsProtection

Peugot 208 ALLURE CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY
There is a real treat in store for the fans of stylish French chic in the petite shape of the new Peugeot 208, a hotshot rival to all the runners in the ever increasing horde of super-minis and city cars. The last 208 was not too great a challenger to the well established likes of the VW Polo, the Ford Fiesta and the Seat Ibiza - but the latest version this sporty and elegant 208 will give them all a run for their money. And I am an unashamed fan. It offers the option of three petrol engines, one diesel and a promise to put an electric model into the fray. This hatchback has been voted the European Car of the Year. It is all set for even further success and even more global awards. It’s a looker. A five seater. And spacious on the inside, even for the leggiest among us. The electric model has a welcoming range of 217 miles. And any noise levels have been suppressed so your eardrums are not invaded either in stop-go situations or flat-out on motorways. The 1.2 Puretech engines have a boom that fades at motorway pace, and the diesel sounds a bit more hoarse whatever your demands on speed, but you would not regard it as unpleasant. The six-speed box may not enjoy the precision of say a Ford Fiesta or the Ibiza - but is responsive and slots easily into every gear. A slight setback are the views from behind the tiny steering wheel. The thickness and angle of the car’s

windscreen pillars obscure some of your view through twists and bends - but there are reasonably proportioned door mirrors. However, the rear pillars and sloping roof limit what you can see behind your back. As for parking. No problem. Fitted as standard on all models are rear parking sensors. If you are a penny pincher subject to lengthy journeys and massive mileage all year round then it is worth giving consideration to the diesel powered version purely for economy reasons. And that brings me to the 1.5 BlueHD 100. It has bags of punch from the lowest of revs and feels as sprightly as can be when it sets off from standstill. With its useful pulling power and acceleration you are freed from meddling with the gear stick. Even the least costly trim level ACTIVE is more than adequately equipped with 16 inch alloy wheels, heated door mirrors, automatic lights, air con and a leather steering wheel. The ALLURE adds 17 inch alloys, electric rear windows, climate control, privacy glass, automatic wipers and power retracting door mirrors. And there’s more. Much more.... The brainstormers behind the scenes at Peugeot have come up with a genuine showcase contender in the hard-fought city car battleground. Go for it... Specification: The Allure: Engine 1.2. Speed 0-60 in 9.6 secs. MPG:44.3. Price: £18.870.

Spring Burglary NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION
Let’s hope that when you read this we are starting to enjoy some warmer and drier weather. During warmer spells it’s tempting to leave your doors and windows ajar to let some air in, but a refreshing breeze may not be the only thing you invite into your house. Unwelcome guests such as opportunists and sneakin burglars could enter your property through these insecurities. Due to the seasonal increase in burglaries it’s so important to be extra careful during the spring and summer months. In three out of ten burglaries the thief doesn’t even have to break in, they gain entry through an open door or window. Burglaries have been known to take place when the home owners are in, or out in the garden. Surrey is one of the safest places in the country, but Surrey Police is continuing to crack down on burglary across the county. To ensure we keep burglary to a minimum, it is important that you take these simple steps to make it harder for opportunist thieves to get away with their crimes. Please ensure that when you go out, even for just a few minutes to see a neighbour or pick up the children from school, lock all doors and close ground floor and easy accessible first floor windows. If you
have an intruder alarm set it. When you lock up at night check that all ground floor windows are closed and preferably locked. If you have a bedroom on the ground floor and like to leave a window open for air, fit a security stay which allows ventilation with security. Also, it is traditionally a time when people go away for short breaks and holidays around Easter time. If you’re leaving your property empty, try to reduce any giveaway signs. Cancel deliveries, cut your lawn and ask a friend or a neighbour to pick up your post and generally keep an eye on your property. It’s always wise to be alert, but during the spring and summer months we all need to pay a bit more attention and check that windows and doors are secure when your home is unattended. It is possible to let the air in and still keep the burglar out!! Finally, if you’re planning to do any gardening, I would suggest that you mark any garden tools, mowers etc with some brightly coloured gloss paint, perhaps with your house name or post code. This can make items much less attractive to a would-be thief as the tools etc are much easier to identify as belonging to someone.

HOW TO REPORT ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOUR ON NORBURY PARK Antisocial behaviour is never nice to deal with and can have a lasting effect on people using Norbury Park if it’s not dealt with. The Park is used by a lot of different people normally without issue, however there have been incidents of antisocial behaviour that people have contacted us about. These have included quad biking and motorbiking on areas of the site they shouldn’t be and confrontations between cyclists and pedestrians to name but a few. If at any time you see illegal activity or find yourself in a situation that gets heated or could get violent or dangerous you must call 999 to get Police assistance immediately. Never hesitate to do this or feel that you can’t, the call centres are trained to help triage calls and help you to understand the severity of the incident you might be involved in. If the incident you witness is less than this, but still something you are concerned about, contact the Police on 101. It’s really important that these kind of calls are made, as the Police will use this data to ascertain whether or not there are ongoing problems in areas, or if it is just a one off, this can also often inform resourcing they may allocate too. The Police will be looking for key information such as date, time, activity etc. They do often ask if you can provide additional information that would make an individual standout such as an unusual hat colour and or specific logos etc. It can be difficult to describe where you are when you are in the countryside and we’ve all fallen foul of how big an area Postcodes cover. The Police are now using a system called What 3 Words, where every 3x3m squared piece of land has been assigned 3 unique words, for example Norbury Park Wood Products has been assigned Singer.Ideas.Civic. Follow this link to find out more https://what3words. com/singer.ideas.civic, you can then click on the map
to find the words assigned. With respect to who can drive, ride a horse, cycle or walk where, below are the specific designations for the 4 types of Rights of Way that exist footpaths - can be used for walking, running, mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs bridleways - can be used for walking, horse riding, bicycles, mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs restricted byways - can be used for any transport without a motor and mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs byways open to all traffic - can be used for any kind of transport, including cars (but they’re mainly used by walkers, cyclists and horse riders) although they must be road legal and have the relevant insurance – this is the designation for Admiral’s Way on Norbury Park. We are often asked at the Surrey Wildlife Trust whether or not we can deal with incidents ourselves and/or report incidents on behalf of people. We are not an enforcement agency and have no powers beyond those of a normal individual to take action against antisocial behaviour, therefore we do always ask people to call the Police. It’s very difficult for us to contact the Police on behalf of others as the information ends up being third hand and very fragmented and it waters down the power of the information provided. Therefore, we ask people to make direct contact based on what they see. We do however log every incident we are made aware of on site, we create our own incident reports that are logged and reviewed, which also help us to build up a picture of which sites might have issues and which don’t. We often take action off the back of information we have received and over the last few years we’ve worked closely with the Surrey Police 4x4 unit specifically around inappropriate vehicle usage on Norbury Park and for the time being this seems to have subsided.
