Have you noticed, the dark evenings are gradually fading? Each and every day, we gain over one minute of daylight. Spring is just around the corner and I for one can’t wait! More spring bulbs were planted in my garden last autumn and I am very much looking forward to welcoming their cheery blooms in a few weeks time! We are delighted to welcome a selection of new advertisers to our pages this month and of course, we welcome back many of our regulars too. I hope you will find their services useful and please do mention Look Local when you call them. Look out for a number of New Year discounts on offer from various businesses too, there are some deals to be had! Two competitions are included, and these are well worth entering; our Cash Prize Draw, see page 16 for details on this. And do take a peep at page 14 for the chance to win a pair of tickets to attend the ‘Banff Mountain Film Festival’ which brings a high adventure film to G-Live in Guildford and is also showing at The Dorking Halls. If you win, you can select which venue you wish to attend. The scenery is just breath taking and the action, for any skiing enthusiast, is a must see! Our ‘What’s On’ pages are packed with interesting events and activities this month so do take a look at these. As well as this there are updates from the BRA, Surrey Free Masons, The Leatherhead & District History Society, Age Concern, Leatherhead Lions, The Arts Society Bookham, the local police and Bookham Library, and info about Spring & Summer concerts and events at the magnificent nearby Menuhin Hall. I hope there will something of interest for most! Wishing you a great month, a Happy Chinese New Year and a Happy Valentine’s Day too! Until next time take care,
Ros

This month we caught up with Blair Baker about her experience as a guest with Buy to Let Hunter. Buy to Let Hunter is a niche company offering investors a chance to purchase perfect small properties to rent on a shortterm, serviced basis in the dormitory suburbs. But who, I hear you ask, chooses to stay in a tiny house in Binfield? One of our guests, Blair Baker, recently had a chat with us about her experience as a guest with Buy To Let Hunter. How did you come to be staying in one of our properties? “We sold our house in June, on the very day we put it up for market! We were relocating as a family to the States and for that to happen, my husband needed a visa. Due to Covid his application was delayed. We found ourselves in a total pickle – we were advised to stay in an Airbnb and wait. We had no idea it would be for six months!” How has the experience with BTLH been? “When we found your house in Binfield, we felt so grateful and blessed. We were actually blown away: it was a proper home for us – with a garden for Shadow and a locked shed for us to use for storage.” What would you say to other people in your position? “This has been a major life transition and you have given us the opportunity to have a home, showing us flexibility and genuine Advertising feature
care, giving so much more than a roof over our heads: honestly, it has made all the difference! It provides the perfect stop gap for those who are stuck between life transitions, a true safe place for us to be in the midst of stress and turmoil.” Blair and her family are packing and hopeful to finally make the next step towards a new life together in Massachusetts with flights scheduled and a shiny new visa in hand. “We think we will leave next week – but now we have to take Covid tests, so everything is still somewhat up in the air… it’s like the most suspenseful storyline narrative ever, isn’t it! “Will they stay or will they go?” In the nicest possible way, we hope Blair, Shadow and her family leave for good! The owner of Blair’s serviced and furnished home has been earning twice as much in rental, has the warm fuzzy feeling of providing a much-needed home and has a hassle free, flexible investment. If you would like to read about our other guests or investors to discover more about our business, please do read our series of interviews with them on the website.
Can BTLH help you find the perfect property? Get in touch & have a chat: 020 7550 9396 or hello@buytolethunter.com. For more info check out: www.buytolethunter.com. Quadrant Road, Richmond, London, TW9 1DH

THE MEETING PLACE COFFEE SHOP - Our Christmas opening on 18th December was a superb morning with about 20 people coming along who each received a small wrapped piece of Christmas cake and a greeting card from the team. It was so well received. The carol singers who had been outside The Crown suddenly came in and we put up an extra big table for them. Whilst the group of them waited for their coffee they sang a carol for us which rounded off our wonderful morning. In January (covid restrictions permitting!) we will celebrate our 10th Anniversary (now 11 years) since the opening of the Coffee Shop.
COMMUNITY FRIDGE - The Fridge had a marvellous end to the year at the Youth Centre with plenty of goodies coming in which we were able to distribute to prevent it going to landfill. From January we will move to three separate centres- Bookham Baptist Church, The Grange Centre and St Mary’s Fetcham. The days and times at each location are on our website.
For more information on all areas of our outreach in the local community see our website or facebook page. www.themeetingplace.org.uk

LEATHERHEAD LIONS Incorporating Registered Charity 285912 / www.leatherheadlions.org.uk
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU … for the fantastic generosity of the people of Ashtead, Leatherhead, Fetcham and Bookham who supported our Santa Street Collections and our Wenceslas Winter Fuel Appeal this year! Our Santa Street collections totalled £10,330.11 a record amount in what we considered “difficult times” and the uncertainty as to how much cash might be around? How wrong could we be? We collected £331.00 by card payments, £4,380.00 in bank notes (594 pieces of paper), £5,619.00 in coin (16,236 coins weighing 241 pounds - 17.25 stone: 109.57kg) so a big thank you to our Treasurer and his Grandson Timothy for all the counting and banking. Our chosen charities for the street collections this year are The Princes Alice Hospice and The Grange at Bookham, (Disability

services and support), Kent, Surrey, Sussex Air Ambulance plus other local charities and families and individuals. On another note, our Wenceslas Winter Fuel Appeal has already raised £4,828.50 to date so again a BIG Thank You to all those people who feel they don’t need the Winter Fuel allowance and are happy to pass it on to those who do. We receive requests for support through Citizens Advice Bureau, Christians Against Poverty and other charities involved in helping those needing support. If you know of a family or individual experiencing “Fuel Poverty” or in need of support or would like to make a donation please let us know either direct at www.leatherheadlions.org.uk or through one of the organisations in the community. Your generosity allows us to help others less fortunate. THANK YOU.

HOME WANTED! Bomber
love
7 yr old Bomber is very ready to go to his forever home, which he so richly deserves after being in care for so long. He is very friendly and so chatty – he chirrups all the time. He loves his food and certainly needs more space to run around and lose some weight! Bomber has been given a ball into which biscuits are put and then he bats the ball around to make the biscuits fall out. He loves this ball!
Bomber needs to be adopted by a household of one or two people who have had the experience of looking after a long term stray which can be so rewarding. He will become a lovely companion for someone but at the moment he is not a lap cat. He needs direct access to a secure garden, with no other pets and no children. If you could give Bomber his forever home please email adoption@epsom.cats.org.uk or call 0345 260 1387.

Having spent over 50 years working in cinemas, the job of projectionist no longer exists, thanks to the digital age. Being a film & cinema lover, I wanted to maintain doing a job that I not only loved but had dedicated my working life to. At the same time I want to present a wide variety of films to the general public in manner that replicates as far as possible, the way that visiting the cinema in years gone by, used to be both a pleasurable & entertaining experience…

How secure are you???? Almost daily our customers tell us about their fears and concerns about being forced into a digital world, where they do not have the knowledge nor interest to ensure they are fully protected. We have created a few simple checks for your protection. 1: Never click on a link within an email you have received- the email may purport to be from your bank but the scammers may be mimicking their appearance, and the link will take you to the scammers website where they ask you for your bank’s login credentials. 2: When you go to a secure website you should see a padlock logo in the address bar- like this and usually followed by the https, indicating the website has the https://www.tecres.co.uk/ highest level of security. 3: Ensure your computer is using up to date software, Windows 10 or 11, Mac 10.15 or newer. If you use MS Office the version needs to be newer than 2016. 4: Ensure you have a paid for Internet Security program on your machine, like Webroot, Bullguard, Norton or Kasperski. 5: NEVER use the same password for all your online activities. In recent years there have been some significant data breaches from the likes of British Airways, EasyJet, Yahoo, Facebook, Adobe, Linkedin and Hilton Hotels, where millions of customers records have been taken - if your user name and password were the same for any of these, then the hackers could have access to your data. Now you might, correctly, say “why does it matter that someone has your Easyjet account details?” In isolation it may not be very significant, but you may have stored your credit or bankers details on their system, and more significantly they will have your user name and password. This isn’t scaremongering, it is reality.
What can you do to protect yourself? There is a useful website named www.haveibeenpwned.com. By putting in your email address it will tell you how many recorded breaches of your email address have been recorded. If you try this random email address johnsmith@hotmail.com, it will tell you it has been compromised on 92 occasions and where this compromise came from. If you have been pwned what can you do? Change your email password twice in a week, and ensure your new password is not similar to the old one, ensure it has numbers, upper, lower case letters, and punctuation symbols in it. Try to have a different password for your major activities like email, shopping websites, finance websites. We realise that trying to remember all these passwords is close to impossible, so we have a solution to this, for £55.00 per year we can provide you with a corporate/ military grade password keeping program, where only you can see the details stored. This will work on your PC, Mac, smart phone and tablet. Please do ask for further information. As apart of our Total Care Support package we get asked to help recover users accounts details, or where their accounts have been hacked. In most cases we are successful, but can’t be guaranteed.

Book Reviews FEBRUARY 2022 ‘Middlemarch’ by George Eliot If you’ve never got round to reading this classic, or if you read it years ago, then it’s worth the deep dive. Around the life-defining events of love and marriage are the political, medical and religious tussles of longstanding Middlemarch residents heightened by the arrival of outsiders who dare to encroach with their innovation and strong opinions. Don’t let the length put you off; George Eliot’s writing and the vivacity of her characters will draw you in. Her humour shines out in delightful bon mots and sharp judgements, but pathos and devoted love are there in plenty. ‘Sense and Sensibility’ by Jane Austen It’s easy to think of Jane Austen as a cosy novelist, with everyone she makes us care about happily married at the end of her books. However in Sense and Sensibility she’s daring, speaking plainly about girls ruined by pregnancy outside marriage and bringing one of her characters perilously close to that great risk. The book invites us to consider how much society has changed, and yet with her scalpel wit Austen reminds us that while society changes, some fools will always be with us. Dancing with Mr Robert Ferrars and listening to his self-important drivel, the reader will never forget how “Elinor agreed to it all, for she did not think he deserved the compliment of rational opposition.” ‘Orlando’ by Virginia Woolf Orlando lives many lives: sometimes male, sometimes female, always searching for passion and adventure. From Elizabethan England to Imperial Turkey and into the modern age, this is a novel which carries us through the centuries, from one love to the next, exploring the nature of history, gender, and the search for happiness.

Princess Alice and other Surrey Hospices Benefit from Year End Financial Grants Hospices provide care, to improve the quality of life of people who have been diagnosed with terminal illness. Whilst part Government funded, Hospices are also deeply reliant on grants and donations from other sources, such as the Masonic Charity Foundation (MCF). Princess Alice is one of several Surrey hospices which have just been awarded end-of-year grants by the MCF. These include Princess Alice Hospice in Esher, which has just received £1,940. Other hospices receiving similar grants are Phyllis Tuckwell in Farnham, which receives £1,845 and Shooting Star Chase St Christopher’s in Guildford, receiving £1,010. St Raphael’s Hospice in Sutton also received £1,655 and Woking Hospice a further £1,940. The grants are being distributed via the Masonic Charitable Foundation, from money donated by Surrey Freemasons, and will be used to help provide end-of-life support to patients and their families. After a visit from the Surrey Freemasons Charity Team, Michelle Gullliver of Princess Alice Hospice said: “Thank you very much for taking the time to come and meet with us and the team at the Hospice. I do hope that you enjoyed the visit and finding out more about the work we do to

support our communities, to have the best care and support before, during and after death. We are so grateful to the Surrey Masonic Team for their financial support through the pandemic and I hope we were able to demonstrate the difference this support has made through the most challenging of times, for both our team and the patients and families they have supported.” Ian Chandler, Head of Surrey Freemasons, added: “I’m so pleased we’ve been able to continue assisting Princess Alice and other hospices across Surrey. They all do an outstanding job helping people with terminal or life limiting conditions, as well as supporting their families through such difficult and challenging times.” Princess Alice Hospice has been caring for people in our local communities for 35 years and the global COVID-19 pandemic has not stopped that. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Princess Alice has cared for more than 3,000 people. The Masonic Charitable Foundation has also awarded 227 grants this year, to hospices across England and Wales, totaling £600,000. Contributions from Freemasons to hospices have exceeded £15 million in England and Wales since 1984.

Frances Fancourt – Bookhams Residents’ Association Tree Warden reports: Some two years ago we all feared that the triangle might be lost to development, posing a threat to Village Day and Bookham’s public outdoor events. Through the combined action of local residents, the Bookhams Residents’ Association (BRA), the Bookham Community Association (BCA), and liaising with both Surrey and Mole Valley Councils, we have now secured this area as a public space complete with benches and plantings. Just before Christmas two benches were fixed onto concrete bases, adding to the shrubs and trees which were planted earlier last year. Covid managed to intervene throughout 2020/2021 causing supply shortages and delays through illness. But through a concerted effort we managed to both secure the land by getting it recognised as an asset of public value and designated as local green space on the Mole Valley Local Plan. Doug McCann and Angela Benny acted as local road co-ordinators, liaising with residents in both The Garstons and Mead Crescent, and getting teams stuck in to raking when the long growth was cut back in November. Thanks go to the Pyatt and Mickova families for their raking and their baking – not only did they get stuck into raking up the long grass, but they also raised £110 from a bake sale to go towards tree planting in Bookham. BCA’s Keith Slark and BRA’s Peter Seaward helped push progress in numerous Zoom meetings over two years.
Garstons Triangle Benches
The Garstons Benches and piles of grass
Thanks also go to Angela Smith who has donated one of the benches in memory of her husband, former Councillor Jim Smith, who served Bookham for many years. Near to her home, we hope that she will be able to enjoy these benches in the years to come. The changeover to frequent mowing by Mole Valley District Council at the same time as the Barn Hall fields (from the previous Surrey County Council less frequent longer cuts) the whole area should become a seamless part of the Old Barn Hall fields, ready to host Village Day, Food Festivals and indeed be used for recreation by the residents of Bookham. Whilst the Garstons Triangle is still taking shape we hope that within a year or two it will look and feel like the old and much loved Willow triangle – a lovely green space for the people of Bookham. A great example of people working together for the common good. Les Huett - BRA Communications

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
THE CENTRE FOR MILITARY STRESS RELIEF Combat Stress, formerly known as the Ex-Services Mental Welfare Society, has its headquarters today at Tyrwhitt House, Leatherhead. The building is named after Admiral Sir Reginald Tyrwhitt, society president after the death in 1931 of founder Sir Frederick Milner. But Milner House in Ermyn Way, Tyrwhitt House Leatherhead, now a conventional care home for the elderly, takes its name from Sir Frederick himself and formerly served stress victims from the military. This local association with stress relief featured in a pre-Christmas talk to the Leatherhead & District Local History Society by L&DLHS chairman John Rowley. He covered two angles – the history of what was formerly known as Frederick Milner House, and the story of ‘Pill Box Hero’ Captain Harry Reynolds, winner of both the Victoria and Military Crosses in World War 1, who afterwards became superintendent of Frederick Milner House. Sir Frederick, known as ‘the Soldiers and Sailors Friend’, established the Ex-Services Mental Welfare Society in 1919 to campaign for shell-shocked veterans. He was among forward-thinkers who felt they should not be treated in asylums. In 1926, he bought what was then The Long House, Leatherhead, Frederick Milner House on behalf of the
46 Looklocal Magazine - February 2022
society and sought to actively engage military stress victims in a positive environment. He built a factory and market garden in the grounds which both provided them with wages and skills and raised funds for those unable to work. The grounds hosted fundraising garden parties and in 1932, the future King George VI and Queen Mother visited during a holiday at nearby Polesden Lacey. Captain Harry Reynolds (1879-1948), from Northamptonshire, had a military career dating back to 1901 in the territorials and secured a commission in the Royal Scots in 1915. In 1917 he Captain Harry Reynolds won the MC for actions under fire at Arras and then the VC for similar behaviour at Ypres where he led successful attack on a German pill box despite injury. He continued a military career after the war until 1927 and in 1930 joined the Ex-Services Mental Welfare Society as superintendent of the Eden Lodge, Beckenham, moving in 1933 with his wife to Frederick Milner House. He developed various initiatives including marketing herbs, strawberries and honey locally, drawing on his own family farming origins. During World War 2, Frederick Milner House provided accommodation for bombed- out families as well as continuing its work with servicemen. Changes forced by new wartime conditions meant Harry and his wife had to move out and he left the society in 1942 although the family now lived in Skinners Lane, Ashtead. Harry died in 1948 and is buried at St Giles’ Church. For more information from the L&DLHS go to www.leatherheadhistory.org.

Voices annual creative writing competition for children in care and young care leavers now open
Coram Voice launches its seventh annual edition of Voices, the creative writing competition for children in care and young care leavers across the country. The competition, sponsored by UK management consultancy Cadence Innova*, will be open for entries until 28 February 2022. Coram Voice, a charity that ensures the voices of children and young people in and around the care system are heard, first launched the competition in 2016 as a platform for careexperienced young people to express their creative talents and to build understanding of their experiences. Since then, the competition has grown year-on-year, with some young finalists going on to write pieces for national media titles. The theme of this year’s competition is ‘This is Me’ and entries can be in any written form including poems, short stories, raps or newspaper articles, with a 500-word limit. There are four age categories: primary school (5-10), lower secondary school (age 11-14), upper secondary school (age 15-17) and care
48 Looklocal Magazine - February 2022
leavers (age 18-25). Entries will be judged by an expert panel of authors and poets, some of whom are care experienced. The judges are due to be announced shortly, alongside a group of young judges who were finalists in previous years of the competition. Brigid Robinson, Managing Director of Coram Voice, said: “We are delighted to open the 2022 edition of the Voices creative writing competition. When we launched this competition in 2016, we had no idea that it would turn into such an important and valuable creative opportunity for care experienced children and young people across the country. Every time I hear that one of our previous finalists has gone to achieve their goals, whether it’s continuing to write, going to university or getting a job they love, it’s reminds me why this competition exists.” Entries can be submitted online at coramvoice.org.uk/voices until 28 February 2022. For more info on the competition, please visit coramvoice.org.uk/voices.
Chevrolet CORVETTE C8
CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY
American cars, too big, bulky and flashy for my liking, have never been anywhere near my list of desirables - but all that has dramatically and welcomingly changed with the exciting, updated, uprated and superbly presented Chevrolet Corvette C8, a winner if ever there was one. This new baby is the eighth generation and it has been dramatically changed from its predecessors. The engine has been moved behind the driver for the first time - and it is available on the British market with a righthand drive version just to throw every other fancy sports car rival into a panic. This handsome and racy looking beast of burden, handles like a well-behaved, only too eager to please, responder to your rightfoot demands, and capability behind its impressive steering wheel. Its newly placed rear engine transmits its responsibility to its four chunky wheels without giving its lucky and grateful driver a split second of concern. What any owner does have to put up with, is the constant, envious stare from the
gawkers, who retire to bed to dream of being seen smoothing its path along either a motorway or a winding country lane with a showoff burst of breathtaking acceleration or a humming easy-paced slow-motion crawl. There is a vast expanse of sports cars at three times the price of the Corvette - and it does not fall back at being out-priced: far from it! This winner, low-slung and stunning, either in convertible or coupe style, rejoices in a 6.2-litre, 475bhp V8 engine built to give utter satisfaction for a reasonable delve into your bank account. So...how much? Answer: £74,200. Surprised? I most certainly was when, swallowing hard and eyes closed, I asked the price. Why, I wonder, would anybody want to pay more when your hard-earned rewards you with a gorgeous beauty that could excitingly carry you along Europe’s no-limit auto-ways at 184mph and all as steady as a rock? I must cite the designer Tom Peters for putting such a treat on our planet.

Home Security NEIL CLARKE, 13363 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION
When considering what to write about this month, it would have been so refreshing not to feel the need to focus on an issue that still continues to cause immense distress to people when it happens. I am speaking, of course, about burglaries of domestic dwellings - as well as thefts from garages, sheds, outbuildings and from motor vehicles. Sadly, it is so often the case with burglaries that many homes remain regrettably insecure. One in three burglars do not have to force their way in - they gain easy access through an insecure door or open window. In most, if not all, cases we find that access has been gained at the rear of a property at ground floor level. Even when rear windows and doors have been locked - but the keys have been left in the locks or clearly visible nearby - we have found that burglars have gained easy access simply by breaking some glass and turning the key!! Whilst it is impossible to prevent this type of crime from happening in every situation, there is so much that householders can do to make their property a less attractive target to a would-be burglar. Apart from the obvious guidance to ensure that homes and property are locked up securely, it is often the case that a property that looks unoccupied is a more vulnerable target than a home that looks as if there is someone at home. That is why I
emphasise, once again, the benefit of using timers to bring on lights when you are not at home. Ideally, you should have lights coming on in different rooms at different times to mirror, as much as possible, your normal patterns of movement. Basic timers are relatively inexpensive and can make a big difference in creating an impression of occupancy within a home. Also, I would reiterate that, as the dedicated Crime Reduction Advisor for Mole Valley, I can offer free, impartial and cost-effective advice that can help to protect your home and property and make it more secure. That is probably the most rewarding part of my job and I feel strongly that it is important to help people make their homes and property more secure and less vulnerable to being targeted by a burglar. All you have to do to contact me is to call 101 and ask to be put through to me by name. My extension number is 30809. Alternatively, you can call my direct line on 01483 630809 or email me at Neil.Clarke@surrey.pnn.police.uk. I always focus on practical advice that is cost-effective and relevant to each individual’s situation. I do not endorse specific companies but can guide you towards what should meet your needs.

The Bookhams’ Litter Picking Group met again on January 2nd. Many of the group reported that there was less litter about. This could be because less is being dropped or because the Bookhams’ Wombles have been doing a great job. A huge thank you to them. However we did manage to collect 21 bags of litter. If you would like to help keep the Bookhams litter free, please join us on the first Sunday of the month at 11am in Lower Shott car park or contact: litterpicking@bookhamresidents.org.uk Margaret Lawson
