The school holidays will soon be upon us and many of you will, I’m sure, be looking forward to some time off. Whether you are going away or staying local, I hope you have a great summer. If you’re intending to be around the local area during the summer months, there are a whole host of fabulous events to enjoy! We’ve packed as many into our pages this month as we possibly can and I hope you are able find at least one that takes your fancy! You could WIN a great prize this month; we are delighted to offer not 1 or 2 BUT 3 fabulous prizes in 3 very different competitions! • A family ticket for a day out at Chessington World of Adventures. • A really impressive hard-back book which would be treasured & enjoyed by any F1 fan. Formula 1 - The Knowledge - 2nd edition. • A family ticket to see a local production of Alice in Wonderland performed by the Immersion Theatre Group. As well as all this excitement we hope you enjoy our coverage of the recent and ever popular Bookham Village Day. See our centre pages for this. Open Gardens was a tremendous success, as always, despite the challenging weather! Our thanks go to Steve Poole for his fabulous photos of the day. Please see page 23. I’m signing off now, but I do hope you all enjoy a great summer. I’m hoping for a sunny one as I am getting married at the end of July! With Best Regards,

MARK ADAMS Painting - Decorating Wallcoverings FREE ESTIMATES FULLY INSURED 30 YEARS EXPERIENCE NO JOB TOO SMALL

Insects are the foundations upon which all wildlife relies on to survive. We are often asked how to increase the numbers and variety of wildlife in gardens big and small. It’s very simple, just increase the insects and the rest won’t be far behind. Establishing insect biodiversity in your garden is easy and there are several ways to achieve this: leaving dead wood for beetles, building insect hotels, creating a pond, planting trees or growing wildflowers. Dead and decaying wood in shaded and undisturbed areas creates vital habitat for insects including the endangered stag beetle. These magnificent creatures are a joy to watch and a guaranteed way to get kids excited about native wildlife. Since WWII 97% of our traditional meadows and grasslands have disappeared. This has made life particularly difficult for our native bees, hoverflies and butterflies who rely on the variety of food that wildflowers offer them. Wildflower is versatile and low maintenance, working easily alongside mown lawn or as a green roofing material on the countless unused shed roofs and structures in our gardens. A patch of wildflower, regardless of size, will make a massive impact to our insects as well as being a beautiful addition to your garden. Bookham Wine Club

Explores Californian Wines on Monday 8th July 2019 BWC’s July meeting welcomes wine expert Deborah Zbinden when she reveals the fascinating history of Californian wine making. Since Spanish missionaries first produced wine for Mass in the 18th Century, wine making has survived many ‘ups and downs’ and today, produces a great number of excellent wines. Californians, they say are serious about wine, and relaxed about everything else! Wineries are California’s second most popular tourist destination only Disneyland has more. The best wines come from the Pacific Coast and the famous Napa and Sonoma Valleys, and Deborah will be inviting members to taste six of them - three white and three red. Later in July, Friday, 26th, in co-operation with the Association of Wine Educators, BWC will be holding a special Summer Event; a tutored wine tasting of 25 wines, led by Heather Dougherty. A Hog Roast & music follows.

18 Looklocal Magazine - Summer 2019

In August, BWC’s wine tasting is titled ‘Nina’s Italy’ when Nina Cerullo - a qualified wine educator and wine ambassador shares her passion for Italian wines. If you would like further information on these events, or any of the Club’s monthly wine tastings, please visit our website: www.bookhamwineclub.org.uk or contact: membership@bookhamwineclub.org.uk. POEM CORNER Walking Holiday, St Ives, June 1992 (with Holiday Fellowship)

“A walking holiday”, said my friend, “Really, Marion, you must be round the bend, You even creak getting out of bed And find it hard to turn your head Manoeuvring the car when in reverseCliff walking will be even worse. You’re out of puff if it isn’t level And Cornish cliffs are the very devil. What about blisters and aching feet? Constant thirst and prickly heat?” I wrote these lines before I came, Are my feelings still the same? These things, of course, may never happen, But I didn’t know then about ticks on bracken. Coastal walks with views superb, “What’s that flower? What’s that bird”? Cornish styles are not for you If you’re short of leg and five foot two. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak, Especially when it concerns my feet. With comfort stops all shapes and sizes Rocks and bushes yield surprises. My sense of direction being rather dodgy, I could’ve missed land’s End or even Clodgy. The hardest thing throughout the week Was rememb’ring what I’d ticked to eat, Excellent services, led by Keith, With food, of course, beyond belief, Smashing company, a lovely week, I’ll come again, but with different feet!!

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Using LIDAR to reveal Hidden Civilisations & Iron Age structures Light Detection and Ranging or LIDAR involves using light beams projected from drones to discover hidden evidence of long lost buildings and settlements invisible at ground level. Archaeology researcher Krystyna Truscoe gave a fascinating lecture on the subject to the Leatherhead & District Local History Society on 17 May. Krystyna, who has worked on aerial photograph and mapping projects since 2005, is currently using LIDAR sources for research at Reading University into the landscapes of Iron Age settlements in England. She mentioned two recent projects covering historic settlements in the Maya region of Guatemala and structures near the famous Angkor Wat monuments in Cambodia. LIDAR data revealed previously unknown

Silchester lidar mosaic

ancient settlements over an extensive area of the central Maya Lowlands, identifying 61,480 ancient structures. Evidence was found ranging from small rural settlements to large urban areas. In Cambodia, LIDAR surveys had found that Angkor Wat was merely the epicentre of an immense settlement complex, with elaborate engineering works designed to manage water and mitigate monsoon rains. A LIDAR survey measures distance through the time taken for a pulse of light to reach and return from a target. Airborne LIDAR uses a pulsed laser beam, measuring between 20 and 200,000 points per second. These points combine to build an accurate, high

28 Looklocal Magazine - Summer 2019

resolution model of the ground and the features on it. The aircraft typically flies at around 800 metres above ground level and a laser beam is transmitted in pulses, allowing a swathe of about 600 metres to be surveyed during a flight. Measurements at 2-metre intervals or closer allow a detailed model of terrain to be created. LIDAR can survey entire landscapes. It produces 3D data accurate to within a few centimetres and can model terrain hidden under woodland canopy. Grassland is very susceptible and it is particularly valuable in improved pasture where features are heavily denuded. On moorland too it can be useful and on arable land it can show heavily denuded earthworks hard to survey on the ground. Surface geology needs to be considered, particularly in flood plains. Success in wooded areas depends on type of tree cover and time of year. A project of especial interest was The Chase Through Time which Dolebury Warren explored the Cannock Chase area of outstanding natural beauty in Staffordshire. Many previous generations had left their mark on the land but much was hidden in woodland and heath. Historic England and the county council undertook an archaeological survey using LIDAR which revealed the bases of huts where soldiers trained before being sent to the front. The site was re-used during World War 2 as a location for armoured vehicle tests. For more information on the Leatherhead & District Local History Society go to www.leatherheadhistory. org or visit the Leatherhead Museum at Hampton Cottage in Church Street which has now re-opened after refurbishment.

Gardening Matters PROPAGATION

It’s summer, my A Level examining is almost over and your gardens are looking fab, with the hard work done for the moment. So, let’s look at propagation, just for laughs. In gardening terms, propagation means ‘free plants’, although, to be strictly accurate, it’s from the Latin ‘propagare’, meaning ‘to spread/increase’ (hence ‘propaganda’: language is so cool). There are several methods of propagation, but here is Part 1: seeds and layering. Seeds are the simplest way of propagating and are produced by pollination, with the help of insects/the wind/people/animals and pets/butterflies and moths. Some plants - eg pansy/pea/tomato - are self-pollinating, meaning they produce an exact replica of the plant. The advantages of seed? More chance of genetic variation; a greater number of offspring from the parent plant; less skill required (always a bonus in my case); essential for annuals and biennials; it’s cheaper; less chance of passing on disease; it’s easy to store. Some seeds, eg poppy/love-in-a-mist/aquilegia , are ready straightaway; others, eg acer and peony, need storing. Store green seeds in polybags, dry seeds in paper bags, and all seeds in dry, cold, dark conditions if possible. If you’re working with plants with low germination rates, eg peas and carrots, you may want to consider chitting or ‘pre-sprouting’. To chit seeds, put them in

a paper towel, put the towel in a plastic bag and spray it until it’s wet. Leave the bag in a bright, shady part of the house, checking daily for root growth progress. As SOON as the tiny tip begins to emerge from the seeds, it’s important that you sow them outside as you would normal seeds, as you don’t want the seeds to grow into the paper towel. Some seeds have a thick seed coat and need to be nicked in order to germinate well. You can use nail clippers to chip away a piece of the seed coat, but go carefully with a knife. You can usually tell which seeds might benefit from such a treatment: if they’re very small/fine/straw-like, eg zinnias or marigolds, you don’t need to nick them. Many tree and shrub seeds, plus seeds such as morning glory and other large seeds, do need nicking in order to germinate. Propagate plants by placing a young stem, still attached to the mother plant, in contact with soil, either in the ground or in a pot – layering it. This will encourage it to send out roots. Pin down the stem, and once rooted, the branch can be severed from the mother plant, roots and all, and planted elsewhere. It’s best done in April, May and early autumn, as roots form more quickly at these times. Forsythia (yuck, yellow) propagates itself by layering every flipping branch that bends to the ground. So far, so exciting, and so many free plants. Future delights include division and cuttings. I bet you can scarcely wait. Happy hols.

butterflied leg of lamb and salsa verde

• 10 x mint leaves • 1 x tsp wine/cider vinegar • 1/4pt extra virgin olive oil

• bunch parsley • 1 x tablespoon drained capers

THE BOOKHAMS’ RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

MVDC Local Plan (2018 – 2033):

IMPLICATIONS FOR BOOKHAM Earlier this year in Look Local I wrote about the forthcoming Mole Valley Local Plan and how important this was for Bookham. We had hoped that residents would be seeing in June of this year a draft of the Local Plan on which residents, the BRA and local interest groups could comment. The recent Council elections caused the structure of the Council to change and the new leadership has decided to look again at the work done to date and see what and if any changes can be made. In the BRA we are asking the new Councillor responsible for Forward Planning, Margaret Cooksey, to come and talk to us at the public meeting we have arranged in the Barn Hall on July 10th at 7:30 as part

44 Looklocal Magazine - Summer 2019

of our rescheduled 2019 AGM. We hope that here we may be able to get a wider understanding of how Margaret views this task and what changes and general direction of travel may occur in any revised MVDC Local Plan which we understand may now be available in October or November this year. My original report is still available on the BRA web site www.bookhamresidents.org.uk and in the Spring 2019 BRA Newsletter on the implications for Bookham of the MVDC Local Plan. The End is Nigh - well for Windows 7

On January 14th 2020 Microsoft will officially end extended support of Windows 7. Yes in less than 6 months Windows 7 will not receive any software support or updates. But what does this actually mean for you? In very simple terms it means that your Windows 7 device will become less and less useful if you use the device for any internet connected activity. For example if you use the machine for online banking, your bank will stop you gaining access to your online accounts, as they view your computer as being a security risk to their systems. Bit by bit this will become widespread and most online shopping systems will block your ability to carry out transactions with them for the same reason. We are not saying your machine will suddenly stop working on the 14 January. Your files and photos will still be accessible, the machine will power on as before, but you will be at greater risk to security breaches, and your ability to communicate and collaborate with others will be much reduced.

What can you do about this? 1: Upgrade the software on your machine to Windows 10 (the worlds most used operating system). This does carry a cost of ÂŁ130 for the software alone, and your machine may not be designed to work efficiently with Windows 10 Or 2: Replace your computer with a new Windows 10 machine. With costs as low as ÂŁ250 for new machines this is probably the most economical route and you get a brand new, upto date machine, with a full warranty. We can transfer all your data from the old to the new machine and ensure the new machine is ready for the years ahead, with minimal disruption for you. Beat the rush- act now

FORMULA ONE - THE KNOWLEDGE (SECOND EDITION)

Memory Lane, the pathway to personal history, can be a revelation of treasured moments, not always easily brought back to mind - and that’s when help, particularly from printed records, can be an absolute pleasure. From a personal point of view, that is what has happened to me in the form of a newly issued volume. Vast in its content, in the considerable and impressive shape of the tome, “Formula One - The Knowledge” 2nd Edition. In 544 pages, with 90 pictures, I have been captivated in recapturing my days as a world wandering F1 journalist. Writing on the thrill-a-minute grand prix world championship scene for the Daily Mirror when, at its most popular, the paper served five million readers a day. I revelled in shared lunches and dinners in far away places, in the one-to-one company of the likes of British legend Nigel Mansell, wonder-man Ayrton Senna, Niki Lauda, Sir Jackie Stewart, John Watson, John Surtees, and many, many more, Even Hollywood mega star Paul Newman, a committed car race fanatic and gifted driver, with whom I once spent a week. Many of them remain firm friends to this day. I hope you don’t think I am name dropping; they and their GPs were all in a very enjoyable day’s work for me. And, thanks to “The Knowledge” moments spent watching them race have all come flooding back and stirred forgotten and extra-special memories. I often disregard the publisher’s blurb, backing a book, but I agree with every single word of the support for this classic. And therefore, I shall give it an airing. Here goes.... And I quote: “The updated and extended 2nd edition of BY TED MACAULEY

this popular title is the most complete record of Formula 1 statistics ever published. More than 1200 sections on the drivers, the cars, the engines, the tyres and the circuits. Original ideas for analysis that won’t be found anywhere else. Performance records of every driver, every constructor and every engine make, to have taken part in F1. “Amazing coincidences, amusing anecdotes and many funny stories, as well as some serious ones. A summary of regulation changes since 1950, detailed insight into the variety of qualifying procedures throughout the years, a quick reference guide to every grand prix result. All the facts and figures you could ever want to know. “It is the only book ever to focus in such detail on Formula One records and to contain many new ideas for looking at Formula One. A new collection of carefully selected photographs depicting the history of Formula One. “This second edition by author David Hayhoe, has been entirely updated with three seasons of updated information. Apart from that, the content has been considerably extended with many sections re-designed featuring a complete new set of images.” So there! And I could not agree more. Veloce Publishing, as respected a publisher of motorsport books and records as you could find anywhere in the world, has done a fab job. It is priced at £55 and worth every penny.

COMPETITION TIME!!!!

I am chuffed to be giving one away. Free Gratis!!! All you have to do to win is email the answer to the following question to ros@looklocamagazine before 10/07/19: what year did Nigel Mansell clinch his F1 world title?

Â

Summer Crime NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION

The summer months should be a time to be enjoyed by everyone but, sometimes, things can be spoiled by a few people behaving inconsiderately. It is easy to assume that this is all the fault of young people on school holidays but that is not always the case. Parties and barbeques in gardens are an enjoyable feature of summer (when it’s not raining!) but they can cause annoyance to neighbours if they carry on into the late evening and night on a regular basis. Some people have young children who need their sleep! As a general courtesy, do consider telling your neighbours if you are planning a party, or perhaps invite them to come along too!! In most cases, noise nuisance is not really a police matter and should be reported to Environmental Health Officers at Mole Valley District Council. We do, however, receive a number of calls every year from disgruntled neighbours and members of the public when a party gets out of hand and could result in a breach of the peace. Alcohol is nearly always a contributory factor when police have to get involved. If young people are out and about going to parties, please try to ensure that these events are supervised by adults and that there is a control on alcohol being available. It is not a good idea to give young people a few beers to take to a party as it is illegal for them to be in possession of alcohol under the age of 18. If police were to stop them, the alcohol will be confiscated and poured away. Parks and recreation grounds are also intended to serve the whole community and it can be intimidating if large

56 Looklocal Magazine - Summer 2019

groups of people gather on them without warning and behave inconsiderately. If anyone feels intimidated or threatened in any way, do call the police on 999. Some communities have already asked police to consider antisocial behaviour on local recreation grounds as priority issues and we will always try to attend if possible. Littering can also be a problem on recreation grounds and on local streets in general. If reported to police we normally refer the matter to the relevant person at Mole Valley District Council. It is tempting on occasions to challenge littering when you see it happening but do consider your own safety and we would never recommend anyone putting themselves in a position where they could receive abuse. If you have any concerns with regards to littering please contact Mole Valley District Council on 01306 8855001, or online at www.molevalley.gov.uk At the risk of repeating ourselves, do please remember to remove any valuables from your car when you are out and about for the day. Opportunist thieves are known to target car parks at beauty spots and they know it is common practice to hide things under the seats and in the glove compartments. Please take all your valuable items with you if you are on a day out - hiding them in the boot is not an option! As always, if you need to contact your local policing team, call 101 and ask to speak with the officers for your local area. You can also email the team for Mole Valley on molevalley@surrey.pnn.police.uk. If you have an emergency to report, always call 999

HOWARD BADMINTON CLUB IS PROUD

TO BE CELEBRATING ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR. In May the club held a Celebration Dinner at Tyrrells Wood Golf Club. We were delighted to welcome our President and founding Chairman Peter Turner, as well as many past and present members. Fifty years ago, Badminton was played with wooden rackets and was not yet an Olympic Sport. Today Badminton is one of the most popular sports in the UK - ranked 4th after Football, Cricket and Rugby. Badminton is a great way of keeping fit. According to the British Heart Foundation: It’s an easy but effective way to stay active A 50-year-old weighing 70kg can burn 385 calories during an hour of social badminton.

1. 2. 3.

Such was the demand for these evening classes at The Howard of Effingham School, that a limit of two years tuition was imposed on those attending. In response to this, the Howard Badminton Club was formed in 1969, to cater for those wanting to continue playing and develop their skills. As demand grew, new sections to the club were added, playing in mainly single court venues in and around Leatherhead. In the 1990s, the club consolidated all of its sections and moved to the newly built sports hall at Downsend School.

It keeps hearts happy Regular play is great for keeping hearts healthy, conditioning and strengthening the heart muscle, reducing hypertension and limiting the risk of blood vessels clogging.

The club now We play on Wednesday nights, throughout the year, on four courts, at the excellent sports hall at St Teresa’s school in Effingham. The club is a friendly, mixed ability group, playing with feather shuttles. We like to play competitively as well as socially. We are currently recruiting new members and will be pleased to welcome players who may be interested in joining the club. We offer a free Badminton session, followed by pay as you play evenings, so you can be sure the club is right for you, before committing to full membership.

A brief history of the club Back in the 1960’s, there was a huge interest in badminton locally, driven in large part by adult education classes.

BOOKHAM LIBRARY

Young readers! Have you joined our Summer Reading Challenge? The scheme encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six library books during the long summer holiday and runs from 13 July until 14 Sept.

BOOKHAM LIBRARY

Townshott Close, off Lower Road, Bookham KT23 4DQ (next to Bookham Baptist Church)

Children’s reading can ‘dip’ during the summer holidays if they don’t have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure. The annual Summer Reading Challenge encourages children into libraries to keep up their reading skills and confidence. Children can read whatever they like - fiction, fact books, poetry, joke books, picture books, audio books - just as long as they are borrowed from the library.
