Oh no, it’s raining today! I’m not very happy about that! But on the up side, my patches of grass seed in the garden will grow now, hopefully. I know, I know, the plants and the ducks like the rain, but I’m off camping for the weekend, so I hope it stops really soon! It’s that time of year when we can look forward to Bookham Village Day again. I’m really looking forward to it and I hope to see you there on Saturday June 20th. Look out for the Look Local Mini and I will be there with my camera, so please do stop me and ask me to take your photo if you’d like to be in our Village Day coverage pictures! A few weeks back, I spent a very enjoyable but windy day at an airfield in Kent with Jo from Bonnie Dogs. As you will see on page 14, she was a very brave girl! The weather was kind to her, as flights were suspended shortly after she jumped, due to a sudden coverage of thick cloud, but it was bright sunshine first thing when she went up to do her crazy charity jump. We all had a really great day and it’s not too late to add your sponsorship to her Virgin Money Giving page, see details inside. Lots of other news about village matters inside this month, and a big well done to all the budding athletes at the Dawnay School too. You’ve been doing amazingly well with your sport achievements! I know it’s hard to believe, but Keith the butcher did a grand job when he didn’t make a sound for a whole 8 hours to raise money for his chosen charity ‘Cardiac Risk in the Young’. We will bring you more on that next time! Again, still not too late to contribute to his sponsorship at www.justgiving.com/keith-sponsored-silence. Wishing you all a great month, and until next time, take care.

The coincidental arrival of sunshine and a drop-top Beetle Cabrio from Volkswagen could not have been more timely, as I planned to head for a family get-together Wittering way. I skipped the motorway and instead breezed the old A3 countryside-view route, as pretty and picturesque a trek as you could want, with plenty of opportunity to test the VW’s many roadholding attributes. The car is its own silent witness, pulled along to upwards of 100mph, with nippy dashes by a whisperer of an engine smoothed to perfection off the back of long experience. Since Nazi despot Adolf Hitler urged the company to build a valuefor-the-pfennig people’s car and it made its debut in 1938, with some of his own design ideas in place, around 25million have been sold worldwide. It was then badged the “Kafer” - English for Beetle - and when it was introduced in small numbers into the UK in 1952 by Colborne Garages - now Lookers - in Guildford and Walton-on-Thames, it began its iconic existence for us.

My treat was to play catch-up, hood down and cosy going, hood up and cool coming back, with great views of rustic, green and hilly Surrey etc from the Cabrio’s panoramic windows front and side. It is a car that oozes satisfaction, a relaxer, uniquely stylish, and nowadays nowhere near the tin-can rattling noise machine of yesteryear. The body may roll a wee bit around the tighter corners, but not enough to have your passengers biting their nails, and on the straighter bits and motorways, it is immaculately behaved and the fabric roof does its duty in staving off any wind and road noise. When you wake up to the fine retro styling, the superbly equipped cabin and comfort level of the seating for four people, all at a price under £20,000, you realise you are

enjoying one of the best value droptops of them all. Better yet, those experts who eye the motor market and advise buyers reckon you should and could haggle the asking price down to around £17,500. For the likes of Trophy Wife, a natural-born and shamelessly cold-eyed negotiator, that would be a matter of course. For the shrinking violet likes of me, it is a heaven-sent tip. Economy-wise, and with a superbly performing 1.2-litre turbo-charged engine which is both punchy when the right foot makes its demands and smoothly efficient in the longer unhurried motorway moments, it is lightly demanding on the purse or wallet. I enjoyed our all-too-brief companionship more than I have done for a good while with any similarly equipped car. VW? Very Worthy... This Cabrio is drop-head gorgeous. Great idea of yours, Adolf. Specification: VW Beetle 1.2 TSI 105. Speed 111mph. 0-62 mph 11.7 secs. MPG 46.3. Price £19,010.

went along recently to one of Sue’s classes, which was held in Finefettle at the top of the High Street. The classes are small & friendly and Sue is very welcoming. She encourages plenty of interaction from the group & everyone seemed happy to contribute. Sue believes that life is all about exploring & experimenting, creating the life you want & not waiting for it to just happen! ‘Realising that we have choices is the first step to a happier life.’ How is this related to relaxation, you may ask ? Sue also believes that if you can allow your body & mind to relax, you will be able to see different ways forward, & even find answers to problems that have previously seemed insoluble. In a relaxed state, it seems that hidden dreams & ideas are more able to surface. To this end, some of the things covered in Sue’s classes are as follows:-

1/ Different ways of learning 2/ Triggers & anchors to a particular state of mind. 3/ Guided progressive relaxation 4/ Visualisation 5/ Power posing 6/ How relaxation can help in many areas of your life. 7/ Sleep problems 8/ Stress & anxiety Saying this, the sessions are quite fluid, & depending on participants’ needs, content can vary. The class I attended was the final in a run of 4, & everyone said that it had been a very enjoyable & positive course which they felt had provided them with valuable tools with which to move forward. Thank you, I really enjoyed my time with you all. For details on Sue’s upcoming courses, please call finefettle on 01372 458984

A Lasting Power of Attorney is now as important as a Will DO YOU KNOW WHY? If you lost mental capacity through an accident or an illness such as dementia, you would no longer be able to make your own decisions. You would be totally reliant on those around you, such as family or friends. However, if you don’t have a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), they could not take control of your finances or take care of your personal welfare. Frightening when you think about it! In 2007, the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) came fully into force. If you do not have an LPA, family and friends would have to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed a deputy to look after your affairs. The application process is lengthy and complex and fraught with problems. When someone applies to become a deputy to look after your affairs, the initial fees and annual fees that would have to be paid would be as follows: • There is an application fee of £400.00* payable to the Court of Protection. • There is also an annual supervision fee of up to £320.00*, dependent on the level of supervision necessary.

• A security bond would also be needed, and based on an estate valued at £250,000, these can typically cost on average £500.00* per annum. • The time and expense of making annual returns to the Court of Protection. It is far more sensible, whilst you have mental capacity, to safeguard your future by putting in place a Lasting Power of Attorney now. This will allow it to be used, should it be needed, without the initial and ongoing expense and annual reporting to the Court of Protection which would apply without one. Mandara Wills is expertly positioned to arrange a Lasting Power of Attorney for clients at a fraction of the cost you would incur should one be required but not be in place. * Court of Protection Website www.justice.gov.uk

n Saturday 9th May, Bookham Vanguard launched a period of public consultation on the Draft Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP). Bookham residents had been invited to the Old Barn Hall to hear about the latest step in the process of formulating planning policies specific to Bookham, and to give their response. The Bookham Vanguard team mounted a display of the draft policies covering new homes, the environment, infrastructure and the local economy. Initially, 4 short presentations in the Waterfiled room provided the objectives of the policies and an overview, explaining how input from Bookham residents, gathered through Bookham Vision and subsequently through public meetings organised by Bookham Vanguard, had been used to influence the formulation of the policies. Residents then visited the 3 stands in the Main Hall, manned by members of the Forum, to examine and discuss the detailed wording of the policies and to give feedback. With the decision by Mole Valley District Council in December 2104 to terminate the work on their Housing and Traveller Site Plan, it became clear that Bookham’s NDP had to be formulated, in the knowledge that no land would be released from the Green Belt for development. Nevertheless, there are still other important issues relating to future planning that need to be addressed. Visitors took away a summary of the draft policies

20 Looklocal Magazine - June 2015

as follows: • No changes to the Green Belt • No development in the Green Belt • Protect open spaces • Increased protection for trees and hedges • Require 2 and 3 bed homes • Increase off-road parking for new homes • Ensure new home designs are in keeping with surroundings • Prioritise highways and drainage improvements • Support increased schools and healthcare places • Protect shops in the retail centre from change of use • Protect business premises and local employment • Protect community halls and facilities The feedback from those who attended was very positive and gave the Vanguard team encouragement that they were on the right track. The next step is for a further draft to be produced, probably towards the end of June, and this will be sent out for comment electronically to those who have provided their email address. Already over 800 people have done this, but if you would like to be added to the list, register your interest at info@bookhamvanguard.co.uk . This will provide the last opportunity to comment before the final draft is submitted to MVDC for their own public consultation which will then go off to HM Inspectors for final assessment. Assuming a positive inspection, Bookham residents can look forward to having the final say in a referendum projected for May 2017.

THE PLOT THICKENS…

OR DOES IT? by Alison Sheldon My plot won’t thicken No matter how I try And if it won’t thicken My victim cannot die

LOOK LOCAL by Judy Perry Look local, make it focal For Bookham peeps, there’s heaps going on. There’s keep fit for the supple, ballroom dancing for couples, bridge for the card-sharp, learn piano, drums or harp, (growing flowers for olfaction gives great satisfaction.) The choice is up to you – try bells for church ringers, walking for the fit, cooking for the fat, French for the traveller, wine sampling for the reveller, Chinese, Japanese, German and Urdu, whichever one appeals to you, you can learn a lot. In your local spot, there’s something for everyone. Bookham is a metropolis of education, of culture – and of fun.

28 Looklocal Magazine - June 2015

I’ve tried all manner Of Devices and Desires The hero had a sex change, The castle set on fire… The children were all werewolves, The adults bared their fangs, The Dogs of War were unleashed And moved in snarling gangs. My plot won’t thicken, I’ve added in more flour, More Purple Prose and Passion The clock has struck the hour. Oh, how the Writer’s Block struck! The torture of Blank Page! My plot won’t thicken And my editor’s enraged. My plot won’t thicken, I must abandon ship. Am off to Hell in a handcart, Someone else can write this script!

orget the traditional image that ‘parish council’ conjures up. Yes, some parish councils have existed for over 120 years, and doubtless we all have a preconceived idea about them. But today’s modern equivalent can be called a parish, village, community or neighbourhood council and does not have to be related to a specific parish as it used to be defined. There are already around 9,000 local councils nationally and new councils are springing up. Some 140 neighbourhoods are currently actively considering establishing a council, and the Queen’s Park ward in North Westminster secured its place in the history books by voting in Inner London’s first ever community council in May 2014. BEAM for Bookham has been established by a group of residents to encourage neighbours to BE AMbitious for Bookham and to promote the founding of a Bookham Village Council for the 21st century. We hope that, once Bookham voters have seen the challenges the future holds, then understood the additional benefits a village council offers, they will support the idea. Recent articles in the Leatherhead Advertiser show daunting problems for officers and council members at Surrey County Council and Mole Valley District Council, as Central Government cuts their funding aggressively. This is unlikely to change, and none of us likes it. Inevitably, services are likely to suffer further.

30 Looklocal Magazine - June 2015

F O R

B O O K H A M

On the other hand, Central Government’s localism agenda actively encourages the establishment of Local Councils where they do not already exist. Localism enables local people to take more control over their own community. So, we can do something about it. We believe the people of Bookham are more than capable of taking charge of their own destiny instead of relying on others to do so. So over the next weeks and months, BEAM for Bookham will be setting out the case to establish a modern village council which has the Bookham community at the centre of its aims and objectives and is truly accountable to that community. Through the village council, the community will be able to raise funds, with each household paying a small contribution. There will be those who ask ‘why should I pay any more for getting what is already happening?’. We don’t think you should, but there are additional benefits, and the security of having funds provided and directly controlled by the local community for use in our own neighbourhood. BEAM for Bookham will promote a debate about the creation of a new local council and hope you will join the debate, decide your view and let us know the result. Please keep an open mind until you have seen the details of the proposals. If you wish to be kept in touch with developments, email us at info@beamforbookham.uk

ight local artists will be exhibiting their work in the stable, conservatory and garden at Rose Cottage Stables, 46, West End Lane, Esher, KT10 8LA. Their artwork ranges from painting and ceramics to woodturning, stained glass and sculpture. Sculptress Alison Catchlove is well know at Wisley RHS for her quirky, humorous bird, bug and flower sculptures in metal. The sculpture of Janet Stanley reflects an interest in mythology and natural forms, a subject which Rosalind Moysen’s paintings also explore, using the textural quality of oil and mixed media to convey semi-abstract impressions of trees and landscape. Farida Khan-Evans’ still life and abstract paintings push the boundaries, with a mixture of media such as textiles, metal, photography and paint, whereas Sarah Jane Vickery’s

watercolour, ink and mixed media paintings have a focus on drawing. Beryl Hole will be showing delicate cut-away porcelain, strong stoneware and naked Raku ceramics. Jane Drown also works in ceramics, producing paper-thin textured vases and vessels inspired by the sea. She also works in stained glass on commission. Roger Marsden is an artistic woodturner who loves transforming the simple beauty of wood into finely-grained bowls, pots, peppergrinders and candlesticks. There will be demonstrations of welding, woodturning and painting. The exhibition starts on the weekend of 6th and 7th June and continues for the next 2 weeks on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, to finish on 21st June. It will open from 11 am to 5pm. Entry free. Dogs, bicycles and children welcome.

You cannot fail to get excited about a spiraliser – they are very silly, huge fun and get the family eating vegetables! Yes, one more large gadget for the kitchen, so if you don’t want one, use a peeler instead. BUT most of us need to laugh more – and this is the answer!

ING REDIENT S : - 2 cucumbers

- 2 large carrots, peeled

- 1 large beetroot, peeled

- 1 ripe mango, skin & stone removed

FOR THE DRESSING:

- 75ml/ 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil

- 60 ml/ ¼ cup lemon juice

- Handful of fresh basil leaves, finely chopped

- 1 tbsp/ 15ml honey

- 1 clove garlic, crushed

- ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper

M ET HOD 1. Spiralise the cucumbers, carrot and beetroot. 2. Shred the mango flesh into fine julienne strips and combine with the other vegetables in a large bowl. 3. Whisk all the dressing ingredients together and toss with the vegetables to serve. If you like the colours to blend into vibrant orange, chill for a few hours before serving.

LATER THIS YEAR THE MUCH HERALDED WINDOWS 10 WIL BE RELEASED

The holiday season will soon be in full swing, and for some people who run a business or just need to remain in touch with those back home, this can present difficulties. We have detailed here a few of the most useful and common solutions we have provided to help you overcome these difficulties. Ensuring you have your information where it is required can be a challenge. We have a product called Briefcase which synchronises all your data across all your devices, be they PC, Mac, tablet or smartphone. Additionally, all data is fully backed up and we store the last 31 versions of your files. This is very useful should you have a file that you are working on and need to revert to an earlier version. The cost of Briefcase is only £70.00 per year and is installed in minutes. If you need a highly portable device to permit access to your information and emails, a tablet may well provide the answer. There are all kinds of tablets on the market currently, with the Apple iPad being the most dominant. Whilst the iPad is good at so many things, it doesn’t really work that well with many work-related programs such as Word and Excel. We feel a much better solution is the Windows tablet range. They include Microsoft Office, and with prices starting at £90 for a 7” tablet, they offer great value and a fabulous solution. The Acer Switch comes with a removable keyboard and a 10” display and is a true hybrid of a tablet and a notebook for £335 - again, this price includes MS Office (see opposite page for further information). Should you wish to extend the running time of your mobile device, we have external powerbanks which can keep a phone, tablet, or in some cases a laptop, fully charged for many days. These prices start at £15.

OLLOWING the announcement that the UK has become the first country to provide a revolutionary new Meningitis B vaccine to babies, leading UK meningitis charity, Meningitis Now is urging people not to become complacent but to remain vigilant for the signs and symptoms of the disease. Bexsero, which protects against the UK’s most common form of bacterial meningitis, will be free to babies on the NHS childhood vaccination schedule. Initially, the vaccine will only be given to babies from two months old, with follow-up boosters. Whilst this is good news, it means that the present generation of older children, teenagers and adults is still very much at risk from the disease. Surrey Community Ambassadors for Meningitis Now, Alice and Bryan Austin, lost their daughter Gillian to the disease in 2004. Alice said: “Having experienced the loss of our 31 year old daughter and her baby (she was 28 weeks pregnant) to meningitis, I know how ill-informed the public is about the disease. It is not,

L I V E S

G

U

as widely believed, a disease that only affects babies, children and students. Meningitis can kill or maim anyone at any age.” The UK has one of the world’s highest Meningitis B rates, killing more of the country’s under-fives than any other infectious disease. One in 10 people dies and at least one in three survivors suffers lifelong after-effects, including limb loss, brain damage, epilepsy, deafness and blindness. There is no vaccine to protect against all types of meningitis, and so, if meningitis is suspected, it is vital that you remain vigilant, trust your instincts and seek urgent medical help. Meningitis Now, a UK charity working to save lives and rebuild the futures of people affected by meningitis through research, support and awareness, offers free wallet-sized signs and symptoms cards and phone apps. Visit the website or call the helpline on 0808 80 10 388. For further information or to donate, visit www.meningitisnow.org

GARDENING

R

S

o, to continue the Latin theme – yes, sorry, has to be done - plants can said to have a personality, a certain air about them, and this is very often reflected in the names given to them: for example, the term vulgare often refers to the plant that was considered to be the most common in that genus at the time it was named, so the primrose is Primula vulgaris. Also, Foeniculum vulgare, or fennel, is so-called because it is the only one in that particular genus, poor love. However, the most common plant in a genus will vary, of course, according to where you are.

The beauty of a plant is often reflected in its name although, beauty being in the eye of the beholder, certain plants which are considered beautiful by some people won’t be considered to be so by others. Nevertheless, the specific adjective bellus means ‘beautiful’, and is obvious to most people, the girl’s name Bella being a well-known example. It is represented in plants by Bellis, the daisy - see what I mean by beauty and the beholder’s eye, although some of the little pompom daisies are indeed very pretty. Elegantissima is easy to understand, where the -issima bit means ‘most/very elegant’. Many plants have this name as part of their botanical name: Cornus alba ‘Elegantissima’, the lovely red-barked cornus; Buxus sempervirens ‘Elegantissima’, the common box; Schefflera elegantissima, a very slender houseplant. Mirabilis speaks of great admiration for the plant, as it means ‘wonderful/marvellous/ extraordinary’. Examples of this are Campanula mirabilis, Cotoneaster mirabilis, even Mirabilis as the main name of one plant, the four o’clock flower. Miranda means the same, and can be found after many plants, including dahlia, pelargonium, viola, fuchsia. There is also a darker side to some plants. Debilis

means ‘weak/feeble/debilitated’, as in Helianthus debilis and Oxalis debilis, although I have never found any oxalis to be feeble, quite the reverse, in fact! Decipiens means ‘deceptive’, though in what way isn’t always easy to work out. Maybe Allium decipiens grows much taller than would be expected, and Mahonia decipiens and Persicaria decipiens are both listed as vulnerable or endangered, which may be relevant. And give a wide berth to anything with infestus in its name Rubus infestus or Cytisus infestus - as it may do just that: become troublesome. As for morals, yes, even plants can sink low. Impudicus means ‘with a lewd or shameless quality’! I can only dimly imagine what this means, but I think it is probably something to do with reproducing rapidly and freely, or it could be to do with its shape as it grows. And adulterinus means it hybridises easily, as in Passiflora adulterina and Stachys adulterina. There are many more, most of them obvious - major, mixtus, robustus, simplex, singularis - others less so, but it is helpful to have these extra indicators so that we can plan our gardens in keeping with their style. Next time...more Latin, oh yes, I think so...

WO R D S B Y DAV I D K I D J E N S E N

One of the questions I’m most frequently asked is ‘what are you listening to at the moment?’

To answer that, I thought I should compile a monthly listing of my most-played classic album and my favourite current album. Although Sam Smith’s ‘In The Lonely Hours’ first saw the light of day about a year ago, it still resonates with me as one of the finest recordings of recent times. Just 21, Sam sings with a purity and sublime beauty rarely heard in these times of bland ballads & wishy-washy cover versions. Sam is anything but bland. He sings from the soul & is surrounded by excellent musicians, producers & arrangers who’ve created a multi-award winning album born of a broken heart, as with so many great loves songs. Altogether a lovely recording, dwelling on the quieter moments in life, best enjoyed with the lights down low. My classic album of the month comes from the late Harry Nilsson, or just Nilsson as he became best known. In 1973, he released ‘A Little Tough of Nilsson in the Night’ which features his version of American classics or 20th century standards as they are often called. Released long before Rod Stewart struck gold with his collections of music for crooners, Harry gathered notables like Frank Sinatra’s arranger & the Beatles press officer, Derek Taylor, who produced it. It’s one of those albums that never fails to generate questions at parties, such as ‘wow, who are we listening to?’ & ‘what a wonderful collection of tunes!’ which includes ‘Thanks for the Memory’, ‘Over The Rainbow’ & ‘It’s Only A Paper Moon’. I got to know Harry Nilsson when he once called me out of the blue & invited me to have lunch with him. He told me that after seeing me on TV, I reminded him of a younger version of himself & he wanted me not to be tempted by rock ‘n’ roll excesses as he felt he had been. I assured him that I was born to be mild not wild (much the pity), & that I would treasure his advice. We shared an unforgettable meal & ever since, I’ve always taken a special interest in his recordings, of which ‘ALTNN’ is an outstanding example. Priceless!

Each row, column and 3x3 box must contain the numbers 1 to 9 just once. This can be done by applying logic - you don’t have to guess! Solutions page 69

s the weather improves (hopefully), and people start to do more in the garden or on an allotment, there tends to be an increased risk of theft of metal and other items, including garden machinery or tools, from sheds, lock ups and garages. These locations are not always kept securely locked and in some instances may be located away from the house and therefore are not overlooked. I would like to emphasise the need to make it difficult for property to be stolen by fitting sturdy bolts, locks and/or padlocks to sheds and outbuildings to deter would-be thieves. Also, painting your house number and/or postcode onto items with gloss paint makes them far less desirable to thieves. They are still perfectly useable but would be very difficult to ‘sell on’ if stolen. Again, in better weather, people like to ventilate their homes by opening windows, but please remember to close and lock them if you are going to be away at any stage, or even if you are outside working in the garden, where you may not hear anyone gaining easy entry to your home. Please contact me on 01483 630809 if you require free advice on making your home and property more secure. You can also contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team by email at molevalley@surrey.pnn.police.uk

T H E F T

The issue of thefts from motor vehicles parked at beauty spot car parks across Mole Valley is a concern that always seems to be with us – and seems to become even more prevalent during the summer months. Your local policing team and police units within Surrey will be focusing attention on patrols at all these car parks and will try to meet and speak to visitors, advising them of the importance of not leaving any valuables in their vehicles when unattended. Even more important is to ensure that nothing of value is left on view in vehicles. This appears to have had a positive impact in recent years, but the work continues. For some reason, people still leave handbags in foot wells or under seats in cars, where they are still partially visible. Common examples of items taken include iPhones (not locked or password-protected), purses containing debit, credit and store cards, laptops and even passports! Please don’t contribute to your becoming a victim of crime by helping thieves to target your cars. You can always contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team direct. Either email to molevalley@surrey.pnn.police.uk or telephone 01483 639635. If you have to leave a message on our voicemail system, we will aim to get back to you within 24 hours.
