CROSSWORD PUZZLE
I hope you are all well and enjoying the summery days (summeryish days!) I expect the gardeners amongst us have been busy since I last wrote. If my grass is anything to go by, there seem to be perfect growing conditions at the moment! We have a lovely month ahead in Bookham, with so much going on. Village Day will soon be here again and I look forward very much to seeing you there. Fingers crossed for a sunny day! If you are new to Bookham, I highly recommend you put this event in your diary. Community spirit will be over lowing in abundance, I’m very sure. Can’t wait, Look Local loves Village Day! In addition to this, there is a whole selection of other local events coming up soon. Bookham Choral Society is flexing its vocal chords in anticipation of a performance, the Polesden Lacey Shakespeare company is taking bookings for summer performances, and there will be a special celebration in honour of Queen Elizabeth’s 90th Birthday at St Nicolas’ Church too. Bookham Camera Club is celebrating its 70th birthday this month and has put together a beautiful book to mark the occasion, details within. If its previous work is anything to go by, it will be very well worth a look. And finally, on a sadder note, I’d like to say a personal farewell to a lovely local gentleman, Mr Peter Hudson, who passed away in May. I had the privilege of meeting him at various Rotary meetings and events and worked with him over the years on a number of publicity projects for the Rotary Club. He was a kind and gentle man who did so much for our community and always in such a modest way. I know he will be greatly missed by many. I send my sincere condolences to his wife and family.

ASK BRUCE: WHY DOES MY DOG ROLL IN FOX POO? One of the most frequent questions we get asked here at Bruce’s Doggy Day Care is ‘why does my dog love to roll in fox poo?’ And this month, reader and editor Ros Thomas asked just that. The answer is simple and comes from the canine inbred instinct to hunt. To do this successfully, it helps if they disguise their own scent, so rolling in the muck of their prey makes them smell like them and they can creep up undetected. Our modern-day domesticated dogs are very clean. This means they smell of us and our homes, easy for wild animals such as foxes to recognise and run away from. To stop your dog rolling, you must train it to understand this is unwanted behaviour, using a training aid such as discs or voice commands. My own labrador tries to roll in fox poo when we’re out walking, and as soon as she drops her shoulder to roll, I sternly say no and she stops before rolling. You can then issue a doggy treat so their good behaviour is rewarded. This should help break the fox poo game cycle! To get rid of the vile smell of fox poo, there are special shampoos out there, but one of the best solutions I’ve heard on the doggy grapevine is tomato ketchup. Apparently, the vinegar neutralises it! Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Cobham. Do you have any dog training or canine behavioural questions which you would like to ask Bruce? Send your questions to :-

Beetroot, Quinoa, Black Bean & Linseed Burgers MAKES 6 BURGERS
I couldn’t resist this recipe, adapted from Superfoods by Julie Montague, containing 3 of the 5 essential ingredients to ‘eat yourself young’ - kidney beans, garlic and beetroot! Crunchy on the outside, vibrant in colour and full of flavour.
Ingredients
180ml water 90g quinoa 200g tinned black beans, drained & rinsed (or kidney beans) 2 cooked beetroots ½ small red onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed Small handful of fresh coriander (or parsley), chopped 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar Juice of 1 lime 2 tbsp oat flour (or grind your own from rolled oats – or use buckwheat flour) 2 tbsp ground linseeds 2 tbsp coconut oil Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
To serve:
Dried chilli flakes to season 2 avocados, peeled, pitted and sliced Home-made coleslaw
20 Looklocal Magazine - June 2016
Method
1. Put the 180ml water and quinoa in a saucepan, bring to the boil, cover with lid, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes. Allow to stand for a further 15 minutes. 2. Put the quinoa in a food processor and add the black beans, beetroots, red onion, garlic, coriander, apple cider vinegar and lime juice. Blitz until smooth. Transfer the mixture to a large bowl and stir in the oat flour and linseeds. Season to taste. Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions and flatten into discs to create your burgers. 3. Melt the coconut oil in a frying pan over a medium to high heat. Cook each burger for 2-3 minutes on each side. 4. Serve sprinkled with chilli flakes, some sliced avocado and homemade coleslaw for a great summer supper.

It was great to meet up recently with my old pal, Leslie Charles, the Grammy award-winner with worldwide sales of over 30 million, best known to the world as Billy Ocean. Back in the day when we were both ‘Kids’, we were based in Radio Luxembourg’s London office in Mayfair, which served as our home-from-home when not in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. I would be upstairs, pre-recording interviews etc. while Billy was situated in the basement with his piano, upon which he wrote songs for other people. He became the ‘house’ songwriter on behalf of Radio Luxembourg’s publishing division. We kept in touch through the years and it was wonderful to see him looking so happy and healthy, and, after all these years, enjoying the fruits of his past songwriting talents which eventually paid big dividends for him, with massive global hits such as ‘When The Going Gets Tough’, ‘Caribbean Queen’, ‘Red Light Spells Danger’ ‘Get Outta My Dreams’ and ‘Love Really Hurts Without You’. His new record company has just issued a double disc set, entitled ‘Here You Are + The Best of ’, which features one CD with all his past chart triumphs and the other disc with his cover versions of the brilliant music that inspired him, from artists such as Sam Cooke, Frank Sinatra, Bob Marley and many more. He said “It just seemed to fit perfectly... the songs that made me into the singer I became and where these songs took me to. Hence, Here You Are.” He’s also currently on a big successful UK tour, where he is having a lot of fun. Touring is important to Billy, as it’s not just about promoting his new release, but also provides him with a chance to employ an entourage who owe their livelihood to him. As Billy told me, ‘it’s a big responsibility when taking people on, and I do my best for them, as they are part of my team and rely on me”. Billy is one of the nicest people in pop and it’s lovely when good things happen to good people. His new collection of songs is available to order on Amazon and iTunes.
BOOKHAM
RE SID ENTS ’ AS S O C I AT I O N SPRING 2016 NEWSLETTER The Bookhams Residents’ Association Spring Newsletter should by now have reached all the paidup members - over 3,000 households. The current issue is made up of 12 pages, which reflects the enormous amount of work that the BRA undertake in the village, often unnoticed. The newsletter is full of informative and helpful reports on the majority of issues that maintain and improve Bookham and its surroundings the following subject headings make interesting reading: Transport Services; Norbury Park; Bookham’s Trees; Is it Goodbye to the Nightingale?; Friends of Bookham Common; Clean for the Queen & Bookham’s First Litter Pick; the BRA Website; The Grange; The Meeting Place; and SPACE! If you have not seen it, why not join the BRA - an annual subscription costs just £3 and it covers everybody in the house, aged 18 or over.
Apart from keeping you in touch with village activities, membership also provides you with the opportunity to come along to any of the monthly meetings of the Executive Committee, to either raise a particular issue that concerns you, or simply to listen to what goes on ‘behind the scenes’. Meetings are held at the Pastoral Centre, St. Nicolas’ Church, at 7.45pm. Feedback is important to us. The BRA website has recently been updated and it would be greatly appreciated if readers of Look Local could find the time to provide some feedback on both the newsletter and the website. Please let us know your views, either by phone - 0300 030 9890, or via e-mail -publicity@bookhamresidents.org.uk There are also facilities on the website to contact us with any suggestions, criticisms or compliments! www.bookhamresidents.org.uk

GARDENING M AT T E R S
Hopefully by now, the weather has bucked up and the sun is warm. Difficult to imagine as I write this at the end of April, when the rain/hail is bucketing and it’s freeeeeezing. Anyway, here we go with the Latin words indicating plant direction ... The overall appearance or character of a plant is dictated by the way its branches or stems grow, and such factors could be very important when choosing a plant. In some cases, it could be the habit of the whole plant that influences its name, and in others, it may be only a part of it. A plant with upright stems will contain the word erectus/erecta somewhere in its name: for example, Tagetes erecta, the African marigold of the summer border, a reliable little plant which lasts for ages, and Populus tremula ‘Erecta’, a vigorous upright form of the aspen. A quite different feel will be anything with the word pendulus/pendula in its name. The branches of these plants will have a weeping or pendulous habit, such as Betula pendula, the weeping birch whose arching branches droop to the ground, Prunus pendula, a beautiful weeping cherry whose leaves turn orange and red in autumn, and Fagus sylvatica ‘Pendula’, the weeping beech. Many other terms will also be similar to English and therefore easy to learn. Just remember the outstanding characteristic of the plant and Bob’s your uncle. So, if the direction is upwards – a pretty obvious direction for a plant to grow, in my view – you will see the term verticalis, as in Smilax verticalis, a damage-tolerant plant of the tropics and sub-tropics, whereas if the plant has
a spreading habit, either sideways or horizontally, the name will contain....yes, horizontalis, such as Cotoneaster horizontalis, probably the best-known of the cotoneasters, with its glossy red berries and spreading sprays of foliage, or Juniperus horizontalis ‘Wiltonii’, a very widespreading evergreen juniper with blue-grey foliage. Then there’s ascendens, another name with a meaning that’s straightforward to grasp. An example of this is Prunus pendula var. ascendens ‘Rosea’, an ornamental flowering cherry with ascending branches, rather than weeping. And then there’s radiatus, meaning ‘radiating outwards’, such as Hibiscus radiatus and Asparagus radiatus. Many plants are more laid back in appearance: they may be decumbens, lying or growing on the ground but with rising tips, as in Cistus x dansereaui ‘Decumbens’, a lowgrowing evergreen rock rose, or declinatus, downward curving, such as Cotoneaster declinatus, or reflexus/reflexa, bent back: for example, Syringa reflexa, the nodding lilac, and Dracaena reflexa ‘Variegata’, a variegated dracaena with reflexed green leaves, margined in white. Or they could be patens, meaning spreading, such as Salvia patens, a herbaceous perennial sage whose blue flowers form a large open cluster or Agapanthus campanulatus subsp. patens, the spreading bell agapanthus. And so we come to the end of another little article. See you again next month, and here’s to summer (hopefully).

Windows 10 is soon to be celebrating its 1st birthday: as of April 2016, there have been around 290 million activations, which is pretty impressive. On 29th July 2016, Microsoft will be withdrawing its free upgrade offer, and from here onwards, the upgrade will be charged for. Looking into the future, Microsoft will no longer bring out new editions (ie Windows 11) of the software, simply product enhancements. So, if you wish to keep yourself up to date, take the upgrade now whilst its free. Before doing so, it is worthwhile checking with the publishers of any software you use to ensure it is compatible. The same is applicable for your peripherals. Should you be apprehensive about upgrading, we can do it for you too.
LOW COST
P R I N T I N G We have often talked about the ongoing love/hate relationships we have with inkjet printers, their running costs versus their purchase prices. Yes, it is possible to buy a great wireless printer/copier/ scanner for £50.00, but if you use it extensively, you will find it very costly in the long term, due to the cost and capacity of the inkjet cartridges. As a rule of thumb, we say if you are replacing your cartridges more frequently than once every two months, you have the wrong machine and it will be costing you too much to run. We are pleased to inform you that Epson, the world’s largest inkjet printer manufacturer, has been listening and has a very viable solution for you, called the Ecotank. The Ecotank system is a printer, available in a few models, all with a very large ink cartridge

capacity - in fact, enough ink for 4000 mono pages and 6500 colour pages, with the cost of replacement ink cartridges less than £10... yes, that’s right, £10.00 for 6500 pages. It is a real bargain.

ROTARY:
SELL-OUT BOOKHAM CONCERT RAISES £1,800
A
Rotary-organised concert, featuring the excellent Weybridge Male Voice Choir and local harpist Margaret Watson, raised over £1,800 for Dorking-based charity www.kidsforkids.org.uk. Addressing a sell-out audience of over 160 locals at the Old Barn Hall in Bookham, Dorking-based charity founder Patricia Parker MBE gave an emotional short talk about her charity’s work. Bookham & Horsley Rotary club secretary Paul Simons (top picture) gave sincere thanks to all who supported the gala concert, the proceeds of which go towards a regional Rotary project headed by his club to raise £30,000. This will provide sustainable poverty-alleviation long-term for a full village in Darfur, Sudan, one of the earth’s poorest regions. The local rotary club welcomed Patricia as an honorary club member last month.
FEEL GOOD FITNESS AND WELLNESS FAIR
T
he first annual Feel Good Fitness & Wellness Fair at Bookham’s Old Barn Hall on 23rd April was a resounding success, thanks to all the wonderful exhibitors & our community for making it such a happy and successful event! The 35 stalls showcasing local health and fitness classes, businesses & sports clubs were visited by over 260 people during the day & everyone had a great time. Special thanks to St John Ambulance volunteers for taking blood pressure readings & explaining what these meant, & to the Cadets for teaching people how to save a life. The tireless steel band, Panache, not only entertained the community with uplifting music throughout the day, but also invited people up on stage to experience for themselves the fun of playing steel pans. People also tried archery, free trial sessions of yoga, Pilates & seated dancing, & listened to inspiring talks & demonstrations from experts in healthy food & lifestyles. We will be back next year with an even bigger and better Feel Good Fair, so please tell all your friends and let’s help even more people achieve their fitness and wellness goals. The fair was run by Community MAD (Make A Difference), part of Bookham & Horsley Rotary. We’re open to new members who want to volunteer in the community, give something back, make new friends and have fun. Call Michelle on 07743 430889 or visit us at facebook. com/communityMAD.

OBITUARY: Peter Hudson PRESIDENT, BOOKHAM & HORSLEY ROTARY CLUB
It is with great sadness that we announce the death last month of Peter Hudson, President of Bookham & Horsley Rotary Club, after a long illness and shortly after celebrating his 72nd birthday. A memorial service to celebrate Peter’s life took place at Bookham Baptist Church on Thursday 19th May at 3.15pm. The Rotary Club presented Peter with the Paul Harris Fellowship shortly before his death – the highest award within the global Rotary movement – for very good reason. Few in the Bookham community had given so much as Peter, in many different ways. Peter was born in 1944 in Beaconsfield, Bucks. After graduating from Peterhouse College, Cambridge, he had a long career as a chartered chemical engineer. Peter was by nature a quiet man, but thoughtful, kind, considerate and caring. By his own admission, these traits reflected both his deeply-held religious faith and the way he lived his life in accordance with Rotary principles. We are left with many examples of the way in which Peter quietly guided the actions of others to bring about a better, more caring community, both in Bookham and far wider afield. He was previously a member of Walton Rotary Club, where he had many friends; he then joined the Bookham & Horsley Club some years ago on moving to the village. From the word go, Peter was willing to take office and ready to serve the Club here. He readily embraced the desire of the Club that he should become President for the year starting summer 2015, despite his illness, and used his keen eye to identify ways in which he could introduce new projects and ideas. Peter was instrumental in establishing the Bookham Working Together Forum, which has thrived as a vehicle for connecting voluntary organisations working within our local Community. He was a strong supporter of our new Rotary satellite group, Community MAD (Make A Difference). He recognised that, for a thriving, modern Rotary Club, simply giving money was not enough: actions and involvement made the difference. Peter led by example: he became Secretary of the Company that enabled the Community Hub to operate, and was often seen helping in the shop.
Away from Bookham, Peter was closely involved with the plight of the people of Darfur in South Sudan, one of the poorest regions on earth, suffering from years of civil war. The awful position of local villagers there was close to Peter’s heart, following many trips to Sudan where his son first worked, then met his Sudanese wifeto-be. For his presidential year, it was therefore fitting that Peter chose to support the Darfur aid charity ‘Kids for Kids’, based by chance in Dorking www.kidsforkids.org.uk Despite his personal health starting to fail, Peter used much of the energy left to him to build support for Darfur’s villages in an ongoing practical and sustainable way. It is a fitting tribute to Peter that the Rotary District covering most of Surrey and Sussex has come together in a joint project, pledging to raise £30,000 for Kids for Kids before the end of this year – and it is well on the way towards reaching this target. Peter will be greatly missed by very many people in the Bookham community and further afield. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth, his 4 children, Anne, Tim, Rachel and David, and 7 grandchildren.

M U S T A N G CAR REVIEW
TED MACAULEY TEST DRIVES THE NEW SIXTH GENERATION MUSTANG
A
decade or three ago maybe four - soccer legend Sir Bobby Charlton, to this day still one of my best friends, was gifted a sponsored Ford Mustang. Jaguar E-type owner me then, a racer in my wildest dreams, revelled in the speed Bobby hated, except when he was bursting clear of the midfield to score for Manchester United or England. So occasionally, he preferred to let me drive the American flyer, especially on the narrow and treacherously twisty roads from Manchester to his holiday home in Anglesey, off North Wales. That is still a joy of a memory, now revitalised by Ford’s revelation of their sixth-generation pony-badged Mustang, a real beauty. We motor reviewers were treated to its debut at the New York Motor Show with their gimmick of ultra-gimmicks, a replay of their publicity stunt of 1964, when a Mustang was unveiled on Floor 86 of the Empire State Building. I must say, staged as an eye-catcher of quality, the high-level launch was a needless attention-grabber to what
52 Looklocal Magazine - June 2016
I firmly forecast will be a winner on its own merits and looks. And I shall be very, very surprised if the orders are not quickly placed with the nearest Ford dealer as an outcome of genuine appreciation and promise that this stunner will be the best Ford has ever produced. In fact, it comes in two forms, both equally desirable: as a convertible with a fabric hood that folds away in seven seconds, and as a fastback to rival any challenger currently on the market, price and performance-wise. Over the past half-century, the Mustang has topped the six millions sales figure. Okay, iconic as it may be, it has not always hit the high spots of satisfaction, but this bigger, but lighter, brasher belter, fast and fun, looks to me like a surefire success, though it still, as ever, fails to hit the highest spots cabin-wise, and its suspension is floatier than we Brits are used to. But the brakes are real confidenceboosting grippers. The interior is unmistakably Stars and Stripes...hard plastic everywhere and bum-numbing seats. But the engine sound feedback
has the throaty gruffness of growling movie star Lee Marvin. Just to explode a widely-held myth that it is a car specifically targeting American wallets, Ford is making a breakthrough to grab a wider market with a right-hand drive version. Already, since its release in the UK a few months back, it has reaped nearly 4,000 orders. And the waiting list is swelling. If Trophy Wife would let me - but I have already been downed with a stern NO! - I’d give serious thought to swopping our Porsche Cayman for this iconic bargain buy, Ford’s new kid on the cylnder block, especially the topof-the-range Coyote. I wonder if Sir Bobby will be offered the latest model. If so, I’m on standby to resume my chauffering talents. Specification: Three engines 2.3, 3.7 V6 and 5-0 V8 all with eco-boost. Gears six-speed manual with paddle shifters or automatic. Performance V8 GT: top speed around 155mph. 0-62 in 4.8 secs. Fuel: 20.9 mpg. Price £34,995.
Writing from life The Carer
This is the tale of Rosie Dance Who held elderly men in an utter trance. Her smile was engaging, her eyes emerald green, The tattoos she flashed were somewhat obscene! One April day the agency rang, Interrupted Ms Dance in her flat as she sang, She turned off the opera to write details down, Then perfumed, beguiling, rode straight into town. Today she would visit old Albert Wiggins, Ex-stand-up, pub-landlord, the pies he’d had fingers in Fairly impressed the gals in his life, Yet he’d never been tempted to take up a wife. But once dear old Albert, young Rosie did spy, His heart was a gonner, determined to try His best jokes, his cocktails, tales of times past, Once charmed (he thought) she’d be his at last. Our porcelain-skinned beauty put Albert to bed, “Watch out for red-heads,” his mother had said. As she tucked him in gently, Ma’s rings she did see, This magpie was drawn to all things sparkly. Soon, rocks shone on each hand as she rubbed on Bert’s lint, Then poor, sad old Albert let slip he was skint, Betrayed by Bill Stanley, he’d backed the wrong horse, Lost his fortune to Bill. Now Rosie of course Asked for a transfer to Bill on their books, Primped, preened and glowing, made the best of those looks, Wore lacy suspenders to ride up his hill, Now poor old Bill Stanley is changing his will!

ne of the more challenging parts of my role is to offer home security advice to victims of domestic abuse. Referrals come to me from a variety of sources, but most commonly, I receive requests via the East Surrey Domestic Abuse Service (ESDAS) or from our own safeguarding unit within Surrey Police. Understandably, requests of this nature require priority attention, and after visiting and carrying out an assessment, I will submit my recommendations with the aim of any works being carried out as soon as possible. Unlike standard “home security” assessments, there are many things that can be put in place to enhance personal safety considerably. These can include replacing doors with reinforced security doors, changing the opening direction of doors so that they cannot easily be forced, replacing windows and locks, or installing window grilles for increased security. Additional exterior lighting may also be suggested, as can additional perimeter security, such as higher gates and locking mechanisms. In some cases, where it is assessed to be necessary, a specific room within the home is designated to be a “safe” room. The room needs to have solid walls and any existing door is normally replaced with an outwardopening security door, with multi-point locks. If there isn’t one already, an additional telephone socket can be installed in the room to enable a person to contact police in an emergency. These are, of course, just some examples of what can be done to enhance a person’s safety, but in the first instance, the victim has to take the big step of telling someone about what is happening. This really isn’t as
A B U S E
straightforward as it may seem. Victims may or may not have been subjected to physical abuse, and the effect of psychological abuse can have a huge impact on the victim’s ability to seek help. To the outside world, a victim may appear confident, assertive and absolutely fine, but their self-esteem has been so badly eroded over time that they cannot always recognise that what is happening to them is actually abuse. Taking that first step of confiding in somebody often requires a huge amount of courage and is often mixed up with feelings of personal shame or failure, betrayal of trust and fear of the unknown. Quite often, the perpetrator has instilled a feeling in the victim that they simply cannot cope without them, and this can be a very real fear for a person whose self-esteem has been damaged over time. If you recognise aspects of your own life in any of the above, please think about asking for help. I understand that this isn’t always easy, but the first step is confiding in someone else. If you also suspect that someone you know may be a victim, please consider all possible discreet ways of making them aware that they can seek and get real, practical help and support. East Surrey Domestic Abuse Service (ESDAS) can be contacted on 01737 771350. Website: www.esdas.org.uk E-mail: support@esdas.org.uk The Surrey Domestic Abuse Helpline (24 hour) is on 01483 776822. Alternatively, Surrey Police can always be contacted on 101 or 999. Any contact made will be treated in total confidence, discretion and understanding.
