More bank holidays to look forward to this month, I could really get used to these four day weeks, couldn’t you? Coupled with the longer days, it almost feels like I have time on my hands, but not quite! We seem to have a lot of local people who are doing amazing and kind things this month. Keith the butcher takes on a massive challenge, some might say it’s an impossible challenge! I wonder if he will succeed? Look Local wishes you lots of luck, Keith - see page 9 to find out what he is up to. A well-known local celebrity/film star plans to take part in a massive charity cycle ride across Zambia, riding from Lusaka to Victoria Falls. What a great adventure, and a great way to help so many children too. Howard of Effingham pupil and local teenager Beth Beer is also doing something incredibly kind & courageous this month. She has VERY long, VERY beautiful hair, see how she plans to raise funds for a great cause with her hair! In addition to this, you’ll find all the regular features and local news, events and what’s on details inside…

Enjoy May, everyone! Until next time, take care,

eith, of Rawlings and Kensett, is well-known in the village for his shy and retiring character. However, on Saturday 9th May, he plans to undertake his biggest challenge yet – a sponsored 8 HOUR silence! Most doubt that this is physically possible for Keith, who can never resist a bit of friendly banter. However, he has been practising and I’m sure he’ll succeed – although Bookham, and in particular Rawlings and Kensett will be noticeably quieter on the day! The event is in aid of his favoured charity C-R-Y. Cardiac Risk in the Young aims to prevent young

sudden cardiac deaths through raising awareness, screening and research, as well as supporting affected families, and is a charity Keith has long supported. Every week in the UK, at least 12 young people die suddenly from undiagnosed heart conditions and if you are aged between 14 - 35 and would like to be screened, CRY operates a UK screening service. If you’d like to support Keith and witness his challenge (and help give us a day’s peace in the village!), please drop in to Rawlings and Kensett on 9th May. hen a cow is calving or a sheep lambing, there is a danger that the uterus (womb) will follow the calf or lamb out of the cow or ewe. It is like taking off a sweater. It comes out inside out and it is a very serious condition. I was calving a cow out in the middle of a marsh with a veterinary student called Amy. It was too wet to get my van further than the gateway, so we carried the equipment we thought we would need. The cow was lying down exhausted on her brisket. She was trying to pass a normal-sized calf but it had its head back. We gave her an epidural anaesthetic to anaesthetise her back end, so although she could no longer feel anything, she could still do some pushing. We managed to get the calf out and were delighted; it was still alive but not very lively. I left Amy rubbing the calf with an old towel after we had

10 Looklocal Magazine - May 2015

cleared the mucus from its nose and mouth. I went to examine the cow to see that she was not torn. Disaster. She was starting to push her womb out. I shouted to Amy to hold the womb in while I ran to the van to get a big ‘Buhner’ stitching needle and some white uterine tape. I pushed the big needle through the anaesthetised vulva and threaded the tape. I then went to put tension on the tape, only to find I had threaded Amy’s blond hair through the needle instead of the tape. She was being drawn to the backside of the cow! All was well in the end, with a cow happily licking its calf without a veterinary student stuck to its backend. Luckily, Amy scrubbed up well and we are still friends. So, if you have problems with a cow calving, please ring Green Counties Vets. You will always get a proper farm vet, not a small animal vet in disguise, & we will try not to leave anyone stitched to your cow.

urrey resident and internationally acclaimed actor James Cosmo, star of Braveheart, Narnia and Game of Thrones, has joined up with local charity Street Child Africa to cycle across Zambia this September 2015. Cosmo, who plays tough, resilient characters onscreen, is now taking on a real-life challenge to change the lives of children who struggle to survive on the streets every day. Cosmo is raising essential funds for a local charity that supports vulnerable street children in Zambia by providing safe shelters, access to first aid, education, training and supporting families & communities.

Street Child Africa is offering an exclusive opportunity to fellow local people to ride alongside celebrity James Cosmo, before offering places to the wider public. Will you consider swapping your day-to-day reality to ride alongside a fellow local and celebrity on the streets of Zambia this September? We really hope that, like James Cosmo, you will come onboard with this exciting challenge to support street children. Cosmo explains, “Being involved in this bike ride for street children is a real life challenge for me. I’ve not cycled since I was a lad, so it’s going to be tough. If it wasn’t, I wouldn’t be doing it. The courage these children show, out on the streets fending for themselves alone, is

incredible. That’s why Street Child Africa’s work is so important. Let’s give these kids a chance”. Sheila Lutchanah, Head of Fundraising at Street Child Africa, commented: “We’ve had a lot of fun organising this cycle challenge. To be able to take our supporters on such an adventure in one of the countries where we work with street children is fantastic. Having the backing of James Cosmo and our local supporters will greatly benefit the lives of the children we work with on the streets.” Will you join James Cosmo in this challenge? Cosmo himself has faced many challenges in his life. He remembers the days of struggling in a one bedroom flat with his wife Annie and baby. Then he received his

big break - a call from actor Mel Gibson, asking him to play Campbell with him in the film Braveheart. By taking part in this sponsored challenge, supporters are showing the world that we all have challenges in our lives but that they can be overcome. Cycle Zambia takes you on- and off-road through rural southern Zambia, finishing at the spectacular Victoria Falls. Organised through Discover Adventure, the challenge starts on Friday 25th September and finishes Saturday 3rd October 2015. To take up this exclusive opportunity to join Cycle Zambia and change a street child’s life, email Zoe or call 020 8972 9820 by 10th April. https://www.justgiving.com/jamescosmo/

BETH BEER WILL BE CUTTING OFF MOST OF HER HAIR TO RAISE MONEY FOR CANCER REASEARCH

O

n 1st July 2015, Beth Beer, a Howard of Effingham Year 11 student, will be having her hair cut. We hear you say “there’s nothing unusual about that, I go every 6 weeks.” Well.. in her 16 years, Beth has rarely had her hair cut, but now she is going to have most of it cut off to raise money for Cancer Research and would really appreciate your help. Sadly, both grandmothers, her granddad and aunt have all passed away as a direct result of cancer, so Beth is attempting to raise £1000 for Cancer Research

UK to support the great work they do. Her hair is also being donated to Little Princess Trust charity which makes wigs for hair loss sufferers. Privé, the hairdressers at 8 High Street, Leatherhead (Tel 01372-360302), have generously said they will cut Beth’s hair for free - thank you to them. If you would like to help Beth raise money for Cancer Research, donations can be made via her donation page at www.justgiving.com/beth-beer or you can make your donation at TecRes, 14 North Street, Leatherhead. Thanks very much for reading this and hair we go…!

WINDOWS10 LATER THIS YEAR, THE MUCH-HERALDED WINDOWS 10 WILL BE RELEASED

Amongst its features will be the return of the start button, with some integration of the tiles or metro interface seen on Windows 8, but to a lesser extent. Internet Explorer will also be replaced by an all new browser, yet to be officially named. Microsoft will be offering a free-of-charge upgrade to Windows 7 and 8 users and an amnesty to users of non-genuine Windows too for the first year; however, after the first year, it is highly likely that Microsoft will charge annually for the operating system, deviating completely from their previous business model of charging once for the operating system and then providing free-of-charge updates for the product during its life cycle. If you are looking to purchase a new machine but don’t fancy the prospect of having to pay annually for the software, we still have a healthy selection of both Windows 7 and Windows 8 laptops and desktops.

NEW SCAMS

We have been alerted of some new scams which we would like to share with you. 1: The usual - ‘this is Microsoft calling and you have a problem with your machine, please can we connect to it and show you….’ has developed. We have heard of a customer who fell victim to this and started to become suspicious, so asked the scammers to stop, at which point they deleted all the user’s data on his PC. Just remember, Microsoft would not telephone you. 2: Email scam - this has been reported from both AOL and BT/Yahoo email customers, & indicates that their emails are not secure. The user receives an expected email with an invoice attached from a known tradesperson - let’s say their plumber. Shortly after, the user receives another email from supposedly the plumber, saying something like ‘please ignore the previous mail, use this one’. On inspection, the attachment is present, but the banking details on the invoice have been changed to the scammers’ account. The only way this could have happened is if the scammer is actually monitoring & using the user’s email account. If you are concerned this is happening to you, our advice is to change your email password two or three times in a week. In both cases, Action Fraud should have been informed. Should you like further information on these issues, or discuss your own security please do not hesitate to contact us or Action Fraud. Action Fraud can be contacted on 0300 123 2040 or www.actionfraud.police.uk

Add the cucumber & peanuts to the sauce & pour into a small bowl. 6. Heat a tablespoon of coconut oil in a large frying pan, then fry the fish cakes in batches for 2-3 minutes until golden on each side, adding more oil as necessary. Drain on kitchen paper. 7. Arrange the fishcakes on a warm serving platter with the dipping sauce & serve immediately.

GARDENS OF BOOKHAM OPEN DAY 2015 S U N DAY 2 1 S T J U N E 2 0 1 5 1 0 . 0 0 A M T O 5 . 0 0 P M

Many of you will be familiar with the great amenity we have in our historic Old Barn Hall, the venue for many local activities & a focus for the community. Did you know that our Open Gardens Day has raised over £42,000 for its upkeep over the years? This year is our 10th anniversary, having started in 2006 with 500 visitors & raising just under £2800. Now we typically welcome around 700 visitors to enjoy our beautiful gardens & perhaps get ideas for what they could do in their own patch, be it large or small. Over the years, more than 50 private gardens have been involved, some just once, some several times. This year’s event will feature around 14 varied & attractive private gardens, where garden owners will give you a warm welcome. Two of the gardens have been with us on & off since that first year & we are delighted to have six gardens opening for the very first time. The younger generation is joining us once again, with the Dawnay & Polesden Lacey Infant Schools opening their special gardens developed by the children, with sensory gardens, themed allotments, bird hides & wildlife areas. The Victorian Walled Garden at The Grange has been with us since the start & that is opening once again. Did you see their amazing tree yarn bombing last year? There are some photos on this page & you can also check out more from last year on our Facebook page. You’ll find examples of edible gardening at a number of our gardens, but you will find particular inspiration, & a plant buying opportunity, both at The Grange & at Little Bookham Allotments. Delicious home-baked cakes, rolls & drinks will be served

throughout the day at the Old Barn Hall & there will be the opportunity to visit some stalls there too, including some from the Bookham Country Market. Once again, there will be a raffle with lots of great prizes. We are very grateful once again to The Vineries Garden Centre for sponsoring our day, & to The National Trust which is kindly offering ticket holders one free visit to the gardens at Polesden Lacey w/c 22nd June. Tickets (available from 16th May): £5.00 in advance, or £6.00 on the day. Wheelchair users £3, carers free. Regret no dogs. Includes admission to all gardens & a free minibus service along the route. * The Vineries Garden Centre, Lower Rd (our sponsors) * Weale’s Store, Little Bookham Street * Wishing Well, 7 High Street * Bungalow Stores, Beckley Parade * Old Habits, 17 Church Road * Contact Cards, 228 Cobham Rd, Fetcham * Village Day, 21st June behind the Old Barn Hall * The Old Barn Hall office, Church Road (Tel 01372 456307. We always reckon that the long wait for a bonny new baby is well worthwhile. And if, when it arrives,it is cute and appealing, the joy is unbounded. That was the case with Fiat’s new 500, the re-born iconic babycar, which in its first year reached sales numbers of 222,000 and has just gone on and on and on, hitting 44,005 in the UK alone last year. Global sales now stand at 1.5m and the UK total is 220,000. So, what’s its appeal? Plenty, from style to value for money. The figure for the bargain-buy that enchants is guaranteed to grow even more when Fiat stretches its frontiers farther abroad In celebration of its re-birth, 50 years on from designer Dante Giacosa’s original 50s classic 500, the Italian company threw parties around the world for owners from Japan, Europe and South Africa. I joined in with a loaned pearly white model, encircled about its waistline with the colours of the Italian flag - and it was as at home in Milan’s stop-start streets as it was at 90-plus mph on the motorways and the tight, twisty lanes around Lake Como to Bellagio and the superb Hotel Grand Villa Serbelloni.

And I covered the same ground again the other week in the latest Lounge offering, a re-run of absolute pleassure on the go. My 1.2-litre Lounge model, an £11,315 funky little charmer, nestled cosily alongside the Ferraris and Porsches in the Serbelloni’s lakeside car park with as much eye-catching allure as any of the supercars. Okay, because of its invasive road noise on the motorways, it may not be the transport you would choose to drive top to bottom across Europe, despite its generous mpg, but it sure is just the car you’d like to have when you were at journey’s end. Regular readers will note I have gone from the sublime in the shape of the Maybach to the meticulous. Total opposites they may be, but for punching their weight in their specific categories, they cannot be beaten. Safety in all models of the

500 is superb - all have front, side, curtain and knee airbags which helped it to a re-assuring five-star top rating in the Euro NCAP crash tests. Its retro appeal is enhanced by 14 colour choices, four engine types, three metallic, eight pastel and a selection of seven alloy wheel patterns. Sticker kits, hubcaps and vivid badges mean you can customise the car to your liking, however bizarre your fancy. The four-seater cockpit is legroomier than you would imagine, looking at its diminutive 3.5-metre length from the outside, and the clever clogs Fiat designers have been astute in maximising its minimism. After I’d enjoyed the test car, I was so impressed I bought one, then another which I am currently running in company of, it seems, hundreds of others around Surrey.. And joy of joys to penny pinchers like me, the experts forecast that, after three years, I will get back at least half of what I paid for it. What more could you ask? Specification: Lounge three door 1.2-litre. BHP 69. Top speed 99mph. 0-62 in 12.9s. Fuel 58mpg. Price £11,315.

nd so at last to suffixes. Ah yes, I’ve been keeping you hanging on, I know you were all waiting for this, although there may be a little unavoidable overlap with previous articles, so please forgive me if you recognise something you’ve read before. It’s kind of inevitable at times with prefixes and suffixes in plant names, as they often come as a couple. Anyway…

As I’m sure you know, suffixes are similar to prefixes in that they are combined with other words, but they’re added to the end instead of the beginning. Maybe not as easy to work out, but as you get familiar with botanical names, the frequency with which suffixes crop up will enable you to identify them. And sometimes they’re simply combined with prefixes, as in macrorrhizus, where macro means ‘large’ and -rrhizus means ‘rooted’. In other cases, a suffix is attached to a noun, as in the combo of rupes, meaning ‘rocks’ and -estris, meaning ‘place of growth’, giving us rupestris or ‘growing in rocky places’, such as Potentilla rupestris, the rock cinquefoil, and Carex rupestris, the rock sedge. Silva, meaning ‘wood/ forest’, combined with -estris, gives sylvestris, meaning ‘of the forest’, as seen in many plants/trees, including Pinus sylvestris, the pine, Nicotiana sylvestris, the woodland tobacco plant, and Malva sylvestris, the woodland mallow. Some of the most frequently occurring nouns are those to which the suffix -ensis is attached, meaning ‘of/ from a place’: for example, chinensis (from China) and californiensis (self-evident). We also have stevenagensis (which always makes me smile), as in Gentiana x stevenagensis, a beautiful dark blue gentian which originated in …..yes, Stevenage.

But most frequent of all are the suffixes which describe the main parts of a plant, and they are almost always preceded by some sort of qualifier. So, we have -phyllus (‘leaved’), combined with tri- to give triphyllus, a 3-leaved plant, as in Penstemon triphyllus; macropetala to describe a plant with large or long petals, such as Clematis macropetala; rubrifolia to give the hint that it has red leaves, as in Rosa rubrifolia; densiflorus to explain that it is densely-flowered, as in Lithocarpus densiflorus. There are many others: -anthus, meaning ‘flowered’, recognisable in polyanthus or ‘many-flowered’; -stemon (‘stamened’); -ferum/fera (‘bearing’, as seen in the English ‘conifer’ but also in Sparaxis bulbifera, a bulb-bearing perennial); -issimus (‘very’, as in Echinops spinosissimus, the very prickly echinops!); -ellus, which adds a diminutive quality to the description, so ruber means ‘red’, but rubellus means ‘somewhat red/reddish’ (see Mimulus rubellus); -escens (‘becoming’, as in the grass cultivar Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’, whose leaves start green and then turn black); and finally, obvious ones, such as -color, -formis and -stylus. Ok, that’s quite enough from me for now, Latin scattered all over the place. I hope it will help a little when faced with a plant whose attributes you are unsure of. Back soon…..

First Steps, Baby Steps by Ruth Jessup The most frightening first steps for me came very late in life. I must say I cannot remember my first steps as a baby. Who can? I realise there must have been someone always nearby to hold my hand and steady me in those early days. I’m aware of this when I steadied all my own children as they stepped out as babies, and indeed, later as teenagers. I was their security, their steadier. When I most needed steadying, someone to hold my hand, help me up and lead me forward, there was no one there. I reached out, searched, but found no one. My first steps into widowhood were very painful and daunting. I wobbled, staggered and fell many times. The realisation that I was on my own was devastating, and rather than get up and move forward, even slowly, I would sit down. ‘Slump’ might be a better word to describe the state in which I found myself. What got me to my feet? What started me on the road to recovery? What helped me to take my first steps along the path of singleness from the dark woods of grief and despair? Love! The love of family and friends who gently encouraged me to take those first tentative steps.

Baby Steps by Jemma The room was dark and quiet, with a warm, safe feeling in the solitude. With the dark red roller blind drawn, small tea-light candles scattered on most of the surfaces around the room were glowing orange, sending tall shadows flickering up the stone-coloured walls. She breathed a huge sigh of relief. There was very little else in the room. She sat resting on an old sofa bed, well-used and not very well cared for. Earlier that day, she’d unwrapped books she’d not seen for years. Seeing them now, neatly displayed on the bookcase, she felt content that here was a place for them - she didn’t need to hide them in a cardboard box in the garage any more. The flat was her space alone: she could furnish it in whatever way she wanted. In the corner, there was a small, round, cafe-style table. No chairs yet, but they would come - she had no idea where from, nor how she’d afford them, but none of that mattered, because beyond all else, she felt safe. She rested her head gently on the back of the sofa, her knees hunched up towards her chest. The fridge in the nearby kitchen murmured and whirred gently. A new sound, yet a reassuring one, far better than the sounds she’d been subjected to up until now. It wasn’t going to be easy, she was on her own, with barely a penny to her name and virtually no possessions, other than the shabby clothes on her back, now too big from all the weight she’d lost in recent months through all the worry and anxiety. But for now, none of that mattered. She’d just take baby steps. She’d get there in the end.

Ever since I can remember, women have recorded some of the best-loved and iconic songs of all time, & nowhere has the female voice made more of an impact than in country music. Long before girls started taking on the guys in the chart parade, women have played a big part in telling their own stories in song, of lovers, loners & losers. It was way back in 1924 in New York City that Aunt Samantha & Eva Davis wrote & recorded the songs known as ‘mountain music’ which influenced, inspired & gave the confidence to thousands more ladies to sing their way into our hearts to this very day. A brand new collection of some of the most enduring country hits sung by women is now available on a terrific new compilation of country, entitled The First Ladies of Country. You’ll find classics like ‘Crazy’, the Willie Nelson track made famous by the original spice girl, Patsy Cline, & of course the one & only Dolly Parton is represented here with ‘Jolene’ which Dolly, from her base in Nashville, once told me was inspired by meeting a young red-headed fan of hers. You’ll also hear Tammy Wynette, Lynn Anderson & other gals whose own lives became a bit of a soap opera & added even more of an identity to their massive selling hits. Crystal Gayle, who has the longest hair of anyone I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing, is part of this collection with ‘Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue’,& her sister, Loretta Lynn, who I also had the opportunity to talk to, tells her own true story of ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’. The music of modern day country is featured on this album too from the likes of Carrie Underwood, & Miranda Lambert to Kelly Clarkson & First Aid Kit. Gee, all this talk of country music is gonna make me change into some cowboy boots, kick back & turn the music up.

aye Umansky is a well-known children’s author & poet. She has written over 130 books & her work ranges from picture books to novels. Probably her best-known stories are the ‘Pongwiffy’ series of books which have been enjoyed by many children since 1987. Kaye loves fairy stories & she started her visit to Bookham Library by showing a favourite book from her childhood to the children who had gathered to see her. It was, of course, full of fairy stories which obviously captured her imagination at a young age. She keeps the book in her office at home, as well as a selection of other interesting & treasured artifacts. Maybe it is this unusual collection of items which have provided some of Kaye’s inspiration, as she creates her well-loved stories & poems. Kaye also spoke about her pet cats & made us all laugh when she spoke in cat voices to explain the conversations she has with them when she is trying to concentrate on her work. Kaye really enjoys re-telling classic tales with a twist, like her version of Hansel & Gretel where the children are the nasty characters & the witch does a ‘Super Nanny’ job on them. Not all her books are classic re-writes: she has a good selection of original storylines too, such as her book called ‘Clover Twig & the Amazing Flying Cottage’. The voices of her characters are very important to

60 Looklocal Magazine - May 2015

L I B R A R Y

Kaye; she explained that she likes to know how each voice sounds & how they talk before she can write about them. She demonstrated by reading some extracts from her books & then discussing the characters in relation to their voices. The children were enthralled & totally absorbed by her storytelling, as was I. Kaye is full of charisma & is a natural entertainer. One of Kaye’s books has been shortlisted for the Surrey Library’s Children’s Book Award – the winner will be announced on 6th May. The nominated book is called ‘The 13th Fairy’ & is based on the traditional story of Snow White. In this version, Snow White has a Devonshire accent and the witch is portrayed by a crow who has a Southern American accent like the well-known American comedian, Reginald D Hunter! By the end of her visit, most of the children were keenly chatting to Kaye. They were intrigued by her office & its mysterious contents, & continued to ask her what else she kept there. She showed them a dancing, friendly witch that played a tune & they all loved that very much! It was lovely to meet Kaye & some local children who meet in the library each month & talk about books. Thanks go to Bookham Library for inviting Look Local to join the fun. A great time was enjoyed by all! We wish Kaye the very best of luck for 6th May: she would make a very deserving winner.

he History With money subscribed by local people, The Bookhams, Fetcham and Effingham Nursing Association for many years provided district nurses in Great & Little Bookham, Fetcham & Effingham. This responsibility was taken over by the National Health Service in 1948, but the Nursing Association continued to own the house occupied by the district nurse. In 1974, the Association was converted into a Trust, the purpose of which is to use its funds to help residents in this area who are sick or disabled (physically or mentally) and for whom help is not available from other sources. In 1984, the house was no longer required by the Health Authority, and was sold and the proceeds invested. The Present The Trust has funds and may, at its discretion,

ontacting Surrey Police to report any suspicions or concerns that you may have can make some people think twice! People question whether they may be contacting police unnecessarily, that their suspicions may be completely unfounded and, quite often, simply don’t want to be a nuisance! Anything that gives you cause for concern, does not feel “quite right” or makes you suspicious should be called in. You can use the non-emergency number 101 for general calls, or if you actually see something happening at the time you want to call, dial 999. Call handlers are extensively trained to guide you through all of the information that they need to obtain from you, so don’t worry about making that initial telephone contact. They will ask you questions to create a clear and meaningful report. Then the details are assessed in terms of the need for immediate deployment, putting out a message to all officers on duty or patrol to bear a situation in mind or even to pass the information on to the Force Intelligence Unit. You can either give your full contact details or choose to remain anonymous. If the information is recorded for information purposes, possibly linked to other similar reports, you may not receive direct feedback from our call handlers, but we really appreciate that you took the trouble to contact us. When trying to describe people, however, it can be helpful to consider the wide range of information

P O L I C E

that may be helpful in trying to match a description to a potential suspect. It may not always be practical to write things down, although if this is possible, it can be a great help in making sure you remember all the relevant details. Try to make at least a mental note of age, gender, colour, height, plus hair and eye colour (if you are close enough to see). Also, consider what a person is wearing. The type/ style of clothing, shoes or hat are worth noting. Are there any visible logos on their clothing that could help to identify them? Did you hear anyone use a name if they spoke or were spoken to? Did you note if anyone spoke with a regional or foreign accent? Other things to consider could be: any visible scars/marks/ tattoos; type of shirt, top or jumper and what colour it was; is their footwear of an easily recognisable make with a well-known brand logo? All of these details can help in getting as accurate a picture of a person as possible. If police officers are tasked to act on reported suspicions and it turns out to be “perfectly innocent” – that’s fine too! It is better to have raised your concerns and have them allayed than worry that you didn’t report something that could be important. You can always contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team direct. Either email to molevalley@surrey.pnn.police.uk or telephone 01483 639635. If you have to leave a message on our voicemail system, we will aim to get back to you within 24 hours.

ROTARY ANNUAL CHARTER NIGHT HONOUR COMMUNITY STALWART

he Club’s recent black tie annual Charter Night anniversary was attended by over 50 members and guests, including District Governor Doug Price. A highlight of the evening was a special Rotary presentation to our guest and local community stalwart, Michael Anderson, in recognition of his very long service to this community on so many levels. As the citation noted, Michael has been a passionate supporter of his local community for many decades. He created the Bookham Community Working Together Forum, has served as District Councillor and School Governor and

is active in the Bookham Vanguard group –some of his many roles over the years. The Rotary Club was therefore delighted to mark this special contribution with our own award. The evening also included the formal induction of latest Club member Barry Davies, who was welcomed by President Elect Peter Hudson and DG Doug Price. We welcome new member interest. Come and meet us for a trial evening! For information about The Rotary Club of Bookham & Horsley, visit www.bookhamandhorsley.rotaryweb.org or call Paul Simons, secretary, on 01483 284193
