From the Editor
Hello & welcome to Look Local in November! I’m in the process of embracing the winter! Not always easy, but it has to be done. Walking twice a day with my four-legged furry companion certainly helps to lift the spirits and I highly recommend a daily stroll if you can fit it in. Whether we like it or not, Christmas will soon be with us and Mr Christmas himself will be available to visit at Bocketts Farm from 26th November. This is such a nice venue and removes the highly commercial feel one often experiences. No booking and no queueing, because you can just turn up and enjoy the farm until it’s your turn,

and there are lambs due in December, too. I am going to hijack my gorgeous great-niece who is two (don’t much like being a great-aunt!!) and head down there for sure. Very exciting! Lots of other festive events are starting to happen and we have details within of a good selection. I hope you find them useful and enjoy supporting local people and businesses this Christmas. Fireworks to look forward to as well this month... or not, depending on your species! Again, details of a few local displays can be found within. And of course, we must all remember to remember on 11th November.
See what’s on in and around Bookham in November.

DELICIOUS HOME-MADE FUDGE FROM THE GRANGE
A
t Village Day earlier this year, I spotted a crowd gathering around The Grange’s stall. Beautifully displayed, and being cut and packaged to order, boxes of the freshly-made fudge in different flavours were disappearing fast! On investigation, I discovered that a small group of clients at The Grange had made the fudge and were supplying their shops in Dorking and Bookham, and by all accounts, sales were going very well! So last week, I went to visit The Grange Fudge team to see how they were getting along and to find out a little more about this exciting new enterprise. The group started production a year ago, and, with the help of a few staff members and a fabulous, purposemade fudge kettle, they have been making batches of fudge regularly ever since in a wide selection of popular flavours. The mixture is turned out into prepared tins to set, before being cut and packaged for sale. The group has produced twenty one different flavours so far and these include Rum & Raisin, Strawberries and Cream, Caramel, Chocolate Orange, Chocolate Mint

and many more! On the day I visited, the team was making Raspberry Ripple fudge, and I enjoyed watching as the raspberry ripple effect was achieved. It’s a very professional operation and is enjoyed very much by the team. The Grange Fudge can be found at their shops in Bookham and Dorking and also at Simply Scones, the afternoon tea shop at The Grange. Internet orders are also now being taken for Christmas, and the group also appears at any local events to sell it.They had a very successful day at the Polesden Lacey Donkey Derby last month and will have a stand in the Baptist Church Hall at the Bookham Late Night Shopping Evening in December, with a selection of special Christmas flavours, such as Christmas Pudding, Cranberry, Almond & Amaretto, and Whisky & Ginger. What a wonderful Christmas gift this would make ! Congratulations must go to the hard-working fudge team at The Grange. You are doing a wonderful job, and thank you very much for letting me visit. You can see the fudge team above. I love their uniforms but most of all, I love their fudge!
Sweet talk! Say it with fudge. Chocolate Orange, Raspberry Ripple, Caramel, Rum and Raisin... All our fudge is freshly made for you by the team at Grange Creations. We’re a small mini enterprise set up by The Grange Centre for People with Disabilities in Bookham. Pick up a bar from our shops – No 5 Church Road, Bookham and Inspirations, Lyons Court Dorking.
Or why not buy online and we’ll deliver it for you. Choose four bars in a presentation box. www.grangecentre.org.uk/shop/fudge The Grange provides high quality housing and training opportunities for adults with disabilities. Registered Charity No 207740.

GORGEOUS GROOMING Autumn is here, and as the season changes, so does your dog’s coat. As they shed their summer coat and grow a new layer for winter, so the grooming challenges begin. Owners with long-haired double-coated dogs, such as labradors, golden retrievers and huskies, will know about this more than anyone! Whilst moulting is Nature’s way of regulating your dog’s temperature, a little helping hand is most definitely needed when they live in your home, as opposed to outside in the wild, At Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, we have installed a brand new purpose-built dog grooming parlour recently and have recruited a highly-experienced head groomer. Here are her top five tips for keeping your dog looking gorgeous: 1. Invest in good grooming tools, such as a slicker brush, rake and comb. 2. Brush your dog regularly to ensure all unwanted dead hair is removed. Better in the brush than on your sofa. 3. Get into the habit of washing and drying dirty doggy paws after muddy walks. 4. Keep up-to-date with your flea treatment. 5. Book professional groomer appointments every 8-10 weeks for that extra special touch. Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Cobham.

CHRISTMAS
G I F T I D E A S
With Christmas rapidly approaching, we thought it may be useful to highlight some of the items that will be featuring under the Christmas Tree this year. Custom-built PCs are immensely popular, as they provide you with exactly the specification and power required, built from the highest quality components available at the most advantage prices. Please come and discuss your needs with us. Tablets - there is an ever-increasing number of 7-10 “ tablets on the market. The Apple iPads are clear market leaders of the premium product/premium price area. We have Android tablets from £50.00 and Windows tablets starting from £95.00, which includes a full 12 month subscription of Microsoft Office. Sonos- with a wide selection of products, all with room filling sound. Liberate your music from only £169.00. Smart Home - make your home smart. With easy-touse and flexible remote connection devices, you can control your heating system, lighting control, domestic appliances and even CCTV and security monitoring. As the items all speak a “common language”, you can
build your kit bit by bit and mix different devices to create the optimum solution. Solid State Hard Drives (SSD) - this is the upgrade your computer has been waiting for. Due to dramatic price cuts in the cost of SSDs, now is a great time to upgrade. Having an SSD in your machine will speed up the loading and running performance hugely: we have just upgraded a machine which was taking 4.5 minutes to boot, but with the SSD installed, it now boots in 35 seconds. Costs start from £45.00 and we can install and copy all your data across if required. Gamers’ Mice, Mats and Keyboards - Yes we know it sounds odd, but we have a selection of high performing mice, keyboards and mouse mats specifically for the gamers out there. They are fully adjustable, with some keyboards being illuminated - it could be the answer for that present dilemma. Total Care - allow us to look after your computer fully. We will protect it from viruses and malware, we backup all its data to our cloud and provide unlimited remote and workshop support for just £100 + VAT per year.

s most of us know, Gurkhas are world famous soldiers, highly prized in the British Army and known for their bravery and courage. They come from the mountainous country of Nepal which nestles in the Himalayas, bordering Tibet in the North and India on its southern foothills. Nepal has many geographical regions and social influences and this is reflected in the preparation of the food, which varies from region to region. The common factor is the use of spices and flavourings, such as ginger, garlic, turmeric, peppers, chillies, cumin, coriander, cilantro and fresh herbs. Combined with the fact that produce at the Gurkha Diner is delivered daily, this means that the end result is superb! There are seasonal changes to their menu, the mark of truly fresh food, I always think. The chef at The Gurkha Diner does not use any artificial food colourings or flavourings. The food looks and tastes more natural than most, and even the mango chutney and the mint sauce served with crispy fresh poppadums is freshly and reassuringly home-made! This, and the friendly polite service and very comfortable surroundings, is why Look Local highly recommends Gurkha Diner for your gastronomical Indian pleasures!

nd so, with heavy heart, yellow and orange it is. I have no idea why I detest these two colours so much – and to be honest, it is only the really bright in-your-face yellow and orange that I loathe – but I know others love them, so here we go. And I will try to keep my stomach contents contained…
These two colours are often thought of as autumnal colours because of the turning of leaves, but in fact, there are flowers of these colours throughout the year. There are two distinct strains of yellows: the orange-yellows, with which I have the most difficulty but which go well with other hot and strong colours, and the lemon-yellows, which are much cooler, look good with blues, and with which I can cope better. There is a large number of names to describe yellow, and this reflects the wide range of yellows in nature. Some will be familiar: canarius is, unsurprisingly, canary yellow (but beware of canariensis, as this means the plant is from the Canary Islands), and citrinus means lemon, as in Ranunculus ‘Citrinus’, the meadow buttercup, distinct from the common buttercup and with very pale lemonyyellow flowers. Sulphureus is sulphur-coloured, as in Lathyrus sulphureus, a sweet pea native to California. There are plenty which are not so obvious, although croceus – saffron yellow and evident in Lupinus croceus, the saffron-coloured lupin – and aureus/aurea – golden, as in Alstromeria aurea – are still easy to work out if you have a smattering of Latin. Amongst those that are perhaps not
so easy to decipher are luteus, as seen in so many plants and meaning simply yellow - and the related lutescens, meaning just turning yellow – for example Chimonanthus fragrans ‘Luteus’, the fragrant wintersweet, Solidago x luteus, the golden rod, and Iris lutescens. There is also flavus, which means pure yellow, and here we find a crocus, Crocus flavus, which has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. Vitellinus is egg-yolk yellow, an apt description of, say, Crocus vitellinus, a yellow-orange crocus, very much the colour of egg yolk. Orange is on the hot side of yellow, and aurantiacus is one of the specific names which is frequently seen in this connection, as in Mimulus aurantiacus, a mimulus with salmon-orange or orange-red flowers. Slightly beyond orange comes copper, and cupreus is likely to be the word used to describe plants of this colour, such as Mimulus cupreus. Ooooh dearie me, that was a bit of a mission, but phew, all done now. I’m sure you will think me very strange, but I bet some of you also have pet hates vis-à-vis certain colours. Anyway, next time, greens and browns, should be interesting (hopefully)…..

BUTTERNUT SQUASH, PANCETTA & SAGE CARBONARA
I NG REDIENT S : - 1 small onion, finely chopped - 110g/4 oz pancetta, cut into 1cm cubes - 1 tbsp fresh sage, finely chopped - 2 tbsp roughly chopped fresh flat leaf parsley - 2 cloves garlic, crushed
- 500ml home-made chicken broth - 160ml tin coconut cream (or thick cream from a tin of full fat coconut milk)
- 1 butternut squash, spiralised on coarse cutter - Freshly ground black pepper & sea salt - 20g Parmesan cheese, finely grated (optional)
MET HOD 1. Fry the pancetta with the onion in a small shallow pan over a medium heat for about 10 minutes, stirring from time to time until golden brown all over. Add the sage and toss to coat, then transfer to a small bowl. 2. Put the chicken broth into a large saute pan, bring to the boil and reduce by half. Add coconut cream (or milk) and continue to reduce until a syrupy consistency. 3. Add the spiralised butternut squash to the pan, season with salt and pepper. Stir together, then replace the lid and steam for about 2 minutes until ‘al dente’. 4. Remove the lid, add the pancetta mixture and the fresh parsley, check the seasoning and pile into two warm pasta bowls. Sprinkle with the grated Parmesan before serving.

BMW E V I E W
TED MACAULEY TEST DRIVES THE NEW FLAGSHIP BMW 7 SERIES
I have found another way to spell “luxury” when it comes to cars. It is quite simply... BMW. And more specifically, the 7-series, a masterpiece of a motor on the move upwards. It was launched UK-wise late October and I forecast it will put a scare into the hard-fought upmarket limo battleground. The brand new flagship 7-series is a brilliant re-hash of the model it replaces, bigger, better, even more efficient and loaded with the latest technical gadgetry. And, what’s more, it is a wee bit cheaper than its biggest, toughest competitor, the Mercedes-Benz S-class. My skinflint instincts, therefore, lean me towards the Bee-Em - but, in view of the vast improvement on its predecessor, the latest 7-series is superb value for money and enough of a hot-shot rival to worry Mercedes. Inside is a treat of luxurious wood veneers, plushy metallic surrounds, gizmos to blow your mind and satisfy the most geeky of us, with an
updated infotainment system that encompasses a touchscreen for the first time. As if the basic model was not roomy enough for four of the lengthiestlegged people, you can upgrade to the long wheelbase version which adds an extra 14cm to its stretch. Just to ensure ultra-comfort for those in the plushily spacious back-end, you can have electrically adjustable heated or cooled first-class lounge style seats. And how about this gimmick? A camera scrutinises your hand movements near the touchscreen and by simply wagging your fingers in its general direction, you can perform infotainment choices and functions, abracadbra-like. If you are not given to such showy handsignalled channel switching, there is a basic button display to do the job
instead. The whole atmosphere is one of hush-hush style, a gentle hum of an engine underpinning the refinement level and enabling the most confidentially-whispered tones from those sprawling in the back seats to be heard by those upfront. The BMW 7-series range topper’s feedback when you hoof its superbly smooth and responsive 3.0-litre diesel engine towards an inviting motorway’s distant horizon is a sheer joy of beneficial performance and un-bumpy response and its attack on the tighter corners and sharp bends has all the feel of a smaller, nippy car. BMW’s planners insist their largelimo customers prefer not too much change, and dodge any ideas of radicalisation, hence the new 7’s almost identical outward appearance to its older sibling. Underneath the profile, however, is a different story. A vast improvement. And a surefire seller. Specification: Model :BMW 7-series 730d.Engine:3.0-litre diesel. Speed: 155mph. 0-60mph in 6.1secs. BHP 265.MPG:60.1. Price: £64.530.

LATEST NEWS ON LO CAL BUSES FROM THE BRA
F
rom 17th October, due to lack of passengers, Bookham residents who use the buses will fInd that unfortunately, Buses Excetera had to withdraw their 489 Bookham Station to Leatherhead Tesco and 477 Banstead, via Epsom, Leatherhead, Bookham to Guildford services, both of which had become unviable. However, the good news is that from the same date, the 479 Epsom to Guildford service via Leatherhead and Bookham is enhanced so that it now runs every 30 minutes Monday to Saturday, apart from at weekday school travel times. This makes it much easier for Bookham residents to travel to Leatherhead and Epsom
Hospitals for appointments and visiting in-patients. The 2-hourly Surrey County Council-subsidised Sunday service continues unchanged. The new 479 timetable is on bus stops, in the libraries and downloadable from the Surrey County Council and Bookham Residents’ Association websites. Also, anyone who ventures in a different direction on a Saturday morning will find that the Cobham Chatterbus No.2 service from Leatherhead via Cobham to Brooklands has been extended to Weybridge. But the first bus now leaves Fetcham at the later time of 10:58, with the only other service at 15:16. The times of the two return buses have also changed.

A Lasting Power of Attorney is now as important as a Will DO YOU KNOW WHY? If you lost mental capacity through an accident or an illness such as dementia, you would no longer be able to make your own decisions. You would be totally reliant on those around you, such as family or friends. However, if you don’t have a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), they could not take control of your finances or take care of your personal welfare. Frightening when you think about it! In 2007, the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) came fully into force. If you do not have an LPA, family and friends would have to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed a deputy to look after your affairs. The application process is lengthy and complex and fraught with problems. When someone applies to become a deputy to look after your affairs, the initial fees and annual fees that would have to be paid would be as follows: • There is an application fee of £400.00* payable to the Court of Protection. • There is also an annual supervision fee of up to £320.00*, dependent on the level of supervision necessary.
• A security bond would also be needed, and based on an estate valued at £250,000, these can typically cost on average £500.00* per annum. • The time and expense of making annual returns to the Court of Protection. It is far more sensible, whilst you have mental capacity, to safeguard your future by putting in place a Lasting Power of Attorney now. This will allow it to be used, should it be needed, without the initial and ongoing expense and annual reporting to the Court of Protection which would apply without one. Mandara Wills is expertly positioned to arrange a Lasting Power of Attorney for clients at a fraction of the cost you would incur should one be required but not be in place. * Court of Protection Website www.justice.gov.uk

BLACKBERRY UNICORNS AWARDED THE TITLE ‘BEST GOLDEN CRUMBLE’ AT P O L E S D E N L A C E Y ’ S A N N U A L C R U M B L E R U M B L E
S
tudents from Polesden Lacey School have once again taken part in the National Trust’s Crumble Rumble and this year, a team who named themselves the Blackberry Unicorns have taken this year’s prize for Best Golden Crumble. The Crumble Rumble began in September 2009. Schools across the nation went head-to-head in a battle to pick, peel and cook the most delicious fruit crumble, using the best of the autumn harvest, namely apples and blackberries. Whilst the Crumble Rumble no longer runs as a national competition, the heat was still on in the kitchens at Polesden Lacey, where, last Monday, Year 2 students from local Polesden Lacey School competed amongst themselves to achieve crumble supremacy. Students set out early on the estate with the Polesden Lacey ranger team, foraging for the finest autumn blackberries and Bramley apples. Then, before lunch, they worked in groups of 5 in the Polesden Lacey kitchens to create mouth-watering crumble creations,

using their own hand-picked produce. Bakers competed to come top in various categories, including Tidiest Bakers, Fantastic Fruit Foragers, Best Team Work, Best-Looking Crumble and Tastiest Crumble. But it was top title of Best Golden Crumble that was hotly coveted by all. Polesden Lacey’s Head Chef, Oliver Harrop, judged the crumbles and declared that the Blackberry Unicorns had succeeded in baking the Best Golden Crumble. “The apples and blackberries were juicy and sweet, with a nice tang to the flavour. But most importantly, the crumble itself was beautifully browned when it came out of the oven, creating that golden top that I was looking for.” The Crumble Rumble will be back next year. In the meantime, visitors can taste Polesden Lacey’s delicious home-grown apples in the autumn crumbles served up by the Granary Café this season. For more information about Polesden Lacey, visit www.nationaltrust.org. uk/polesdenlacey or call 01372 452048.

as a beach boys fan
As a long-term Beach Boys fan (and who isn’t?), I must recommend a film which documents the true life events surrounding the making of their brilliant 1966 album, Pet Sounds. Love and Mercy, which stars John Cusack as the angst-ridden genius, Brian Wilson, documents the life and times of a band of young brothers whose primary influence were the male harmony groups of the 1950s. In the mid-60s though, the driving force for the Wilson brothers was chart rivals, The Beatles, and after hearing their album, Rubber Soul, the BB’s prime composer, brother Brian, decided to hang up his surf board (not that he actually surfed) and dedicate his full attention to his own musical vision of the writing and recording of a long-player he aspired to release that he claimed would be “the best album ever made”, Pet Sounds. Along the way, as Love and Mercy documents, his own sanity was becoming a major concern for his nearest and dearest, and at times, the film takes us to the dark heart of a group in and out of the recording studio, as the boys tried to embrace ground-breaking songs that would go on to become classicss, such as Good Vibrations, Caroline No, Wouldn’t it be Nice, Sloop John B and many more, such as God Only Knows, a song that Paul McCartney called the “greatest song ever written”, and he should know! There’s no doubt that Pet Sounds is a masterpiece and a cry from the tortured soul of a man I’ve had the great fortune to get to know over the past few decades. Love and Mercy is without doubt one of the very greatest musical films of all time and I urge you to check it out.

REMEMBRANCE Three pieces by Rachael Underwood Usually I remember to remember Sometimes I forget to remember Sometimes I forget to forget I wish I could remember to forget
TO MY GRANDFATHER BY RACHAEL (AGED 9)
You were in Ypres in 1915, weren’t you? You could read maps really well, so your job was to lead the troops to and from the front line. What was that like? You never told us. Did you see lots of really horrible things, like when you were in that pillbox? Why was it called that? After the grenade landed in it, out of the nine men, there was just you and another man left alive, wasn’t there? And you got really covered in blood and one of your hands couldn’t move. You couldn’t stretch your finger out ever again, could you? You let us stretch it out but then it would ping back into a curved shape, stuck. When the medical people looked at it afterwards, they thought it was shrapnel in your finger, but it was actually human bone. Was it part of one of your friends’ bones? Lots of your friends died in the war, didn’t they? I know you always wore a poppy on Poppy Day to remember them and, when you died, you had those extra special big poppies in a wreath on your gravestone because you worked for the British Legion. At your funeral, I stood and I looked at those poppies on your gravestone with my mother and my sisters. Years have passed and I have grown up. I sometimes think of you and what you did. Because you came out of that pillbox alive, you went on to have a daughter. She had daughters, one of them was me, and I had a son and he went to visit Germany, and we, in turn, welcomed his German friend into our home. I wonder, could you ever have imagined that, back when you were in Ypres?
REMEMBERING MY FATHER
So I do it. I go and stand in the spot. The spot where, a year ago, you slowly walked with me across the damp, brown sand to the edge of the sea and you squeezed my hand tightly and quietly, bravely, said the words, ‘You know what this means, don’t you?’ I nodded and there was a big tight lump in my throat. I couldn’t speak. I looked out and you looked out. We both stood there in deep silent sadness. We didn’t have to speak. Both of us knew. And the sea was rolling in like it always does, and the sky was big and wide and grey and huge, and the landscape was there like it always is. Familiar and rocky and beautiful. So I do it. I go and stand there in that same spot. And the sea is rolling in like it always does and the sky is big and wide and grey and huge like it always is. Familiar and rocky and beautiful. And somehow you’re there – but you’re not.

EAM’s article in last month’s issue of Look Local explained that the Dorking First campaign for a town council had now reached the stage where they had the required number of signatures on their petition. This means Mole Valley District Council is now initiating a Community Governance Review to see if a council should be created in Dorking. This prompted us to ask how many other communities already had or were now looking at establishing new local councils. The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) told us that, before the Localism Act was introduced in 2011, there were already some 9,000 local councils in the UK. Since the Localism Act, says NALC, 30 new councils have already been set up. Currently, borough or district councils are considering petitions for a Community Governance Review in 15 other places, including Dorking in Mole Valley. Active campaigns are taking place in 32 further places, where petition signatures are being collected. This includes Bookham. On top of this, 94 more communities are at an earlier stage, among them communities in Surrey, including Ash, Banstead, Kingswood & Tadworth, Ottershaw, Weybridge and Burpham.

So Bookham is not alone in exploring this idea. Communities all across the country are waking up to the benefits of having their own very local council, giving: More control over their future Funds raised locally and spent locally A greater sense of identity Clear democracy and accountability A council with only one thing in mind, to serve its residents and improve its community. We are not alone in Mole Valley either. There are 13 Parish Councils already established here in Abinger, Betchworth, Brockham, Buckland, Capel, Charlwood, Headley, Holmwood, Leigh, Mickleham, Newdigate, Ockley and Wotton. And of course, there are parish councils too in our neighbouring villages of Effingham, East Horsley and West Horsley. BE AMbitious for Bookham is a campaign to promote the establishment of a local (village) council for Bookham. To get MVDC started on a Governance Review for Bookham, residents must sign the petition. Some already have and the number is growing, but have you? For more information, please visit
w w w. b e a m f o r b o o k h a m . u k or contact BEAM: info@beamforbookham.uk Then please sign the petition online at http://beamforbookham.uk/sign-the-petition - it takes less than 5 minutes.

his time of year tends to see an increase in reports of burglaries of domestic dwellings and thefts from garages, outbuildings and from motor vehicles. In my work, I am asked to visit people who have been victims of a burglary. It is sad to report that, in many cases, homes remain regrettably insecure. One in three burglars do not have to force their way in – they have gained easy access through an insecure door or open window. In most, if not all cases, we find that access has been gained at the rear of a property at ground floor level and this is often because access to the rear is not restricted by locked gates or fencing. Any gates should ideally have bolts fitted at waist height to prevent someone reaching over and opening the gate easily. Whilst it is impossible to prevent this type of crime from happening in every situation, there is so much that householders can do to make their property a less attractive target to burglars. Burglars prefer to “work” unobserved, so having a clear line of sight from the roadside to a property makes it less attractive than a home where there are high fences or hedges, where a would-be burglar will not be readily seen. Having some effective, low-level, exterior lighting can

also provide a deterrent effect, as it removes areas of shadow which are so popular with burglars. Dusk-tilldawn exterior lighting can be very attractive and costeffective, as it generally uses low wattage bulbs and also removes the need for people to switch exterior lights on and off. If your home is going to be unoccupied at any time after dusk, the use of some simple timers to bring on lights in a staggered pattern can convey the impression that there is someone at home. This has been shown to be an effective deterrent, as burglars never want to meet their victims and only rarely target a property where it appears that anyone is there. Also, I would emphasise (as I have done in the past) that any residents of Mole Valley can request a free home and property security survey. All you have to do to contact me is call 101 and ask to be put through to me on Extension 30809. You can also email molevalley@surrey.pnn. police.uk and I will get your message to call you back to arrange an appointment. I will always focus on practical advice that is sensible and relevant to each individual’s situation. I do not promote any specific products or companies and can often suggest relatively simple ways for people to make their homes less attractive to a would-be burglar.
