From the Editor Welcome to our October issue!

It seems that autumn has arrived, and as we all brace ourselves for turning back the clocks later this month, an abundance of autumn leaves and shiny conkers will fill our village any day now, I’m sure! There’s certainly a lot to read about inside Look Local this month: Wizards & Witches at Bocketts Farm, tips from Bruce of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care about owning a new puppy (very handy as I just so happen to have one of those, see front cover!), David ‘Kid’ Jensen tells us about

A Lasting Power of Attorney is now as important as a Will DO YOU KNOW WHY? If you lost mental capacity through an accident or an illness such as dementia, you would no longer be able to make your own decisions. You would be totally reliant on those around you, such as family or friends. However, if you don’t have a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), they could not take control of your finances or take care of your personal welfare. Frightening when you think about it! In 2007, the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) came fully into force. If you do not have an LPA, family and friends would have to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed a deputy to look after your affairs. The application process is lengthy and complex and fraught with problems. When someone applies to become a deputy to look after your affairs, the initial fees and annual fees that would have to be paid would be as follows: • There is an application fee of £400.00* payable to the Court of Protection. • There is also an annual supervision fee of up to £320.00*, dependent on the level of supervision necessary.

• A security bond would also be needed, and based on an estate valued at £250,000, these can typically cost on average £500.00* per annum. • The time and expense of making annual returns to the Court of Protection. It is far more sensible, whilst you have mental capacity, to safeguard your future by putting in place a Lasting Power of Attorney now. This will allow it to be used, should it be needed, without the initial and ongoing expense and annual reporting to the Court of Protection which would apply without one. Mandara Wills is expertly positioned to arrange a Lasting Power of Attorney for clients at a fraction of the cost you would incur should one be required but not be in place. * Court of Protection Website www.justice.gov.uk

BOOKHAM

TREFOIL GUILD GUIDING FOR ADULTS - FUN, FRIENDSHIP & MAKING A DIFFERENCE!

J

ust before the summer and just after I’d sent our September magazine to the printer, I went to visit the Bookham Trefoil Guild. I must confess that I hadn’t actually heard of this organisation before. Most of the members have a connection to the Girl Guides in one way or another, and have been members for many years. But the group is not exclusively for ex-Guiders, as there is a collection of new members too. The group meets once a month in the Guide Hut in Keswick Road and this is where I went along to meet the group. As a special treat, we all enjoyed some strawberries and cream and a glass of Pimms together which was really lovely. The Trefoil Guild is a national organisation, and groups select different charities to support. In recent years, the Bookham group has supported Headley Court, SAVI, Cherry Trees and Disability Challenges, all local charities with which I’m sure you are familiar. This year, their charity is Pit Stop, the local organisation which helps local homeless people. Fundraising is always an enjoyable experience, taking the form of coffee mornings or similar. Many members also meet up outside the official meetings, and firm friendships are formed between members. Two members who were at the meeting I attended are 90 years old, but I honestly could not tell which they were! Everyone at the meeting was enjoying the evening. It is basically a really lovely social club which enables members to get involved in some charitable work, whilst having a great time together. Once a year, there is a national meeting, but it is not obligatory to attend. One year, members were asked

10 Looklocal Magazine - October 2015

to provide a picture of their members for other groups to see. The picture the Bookham group submitted was fabulous, each member made themself! I love this picture and I think it really reflects the fun characters who make up the Bookham Trefoil Guild (please excuse the photo quality: it is displayed in a glass frame and is hard to avoid light reflection). If you are interested in joining this lovely group, do give their chairlady a call. Her name is Helen and I am sure she would be delighted to chat to you further. Her number is 01372 458171. The national website may also be of interest: www.trefoilguiding.org.uk My thanks go to the Bookham Trefoil Guild , I really enjoyed our evening together.

PUPPY LOVE Puppies are cute and hard to resist, which is why many dog owners choose them over older dogs. But turning your playful puppy into a well-rounded ‘grown-up’ takes time and patience.

Where to start? Puppy socialisation. The core period for this and the whole puppy learning process is from birth to 14-16 weeks. And for the first 6-8 weeks (a puppy should not leave its mother before then), it’s very much down to its mum and siblings. At Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, we take on puppies from 12 weeks old and ensure this steep early life learning curve is followed through in three key steps: 1. Interaction with other dogs to develop social skills, coupled with plenty of time to chill-out and rest. Puppies mustn’t be over-exercised, as their bodies are still developing. Too much activity can be as harmful as not enough. 2. Several small meals throughout the day. Just like babies, puppies need to eat little and often to ensure they have all the nutrition required to grow into healthy adult dogs. Feeding them regularly and separately is also a valuable training tool, as the best-behaved puppy gets fed first and the others soon learn that good behaviour is rewarded. 3. Lots of human contact so they recognise their human handlers as leader of the pack. This is not just a good social skill but a safe one too, as all dogs are so much easier to train and develop when they are puppies. Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Cobham.

GARDENING

R

S

ell, it’s raining yet again here in early September as I type this. I’m hoping that we’ll have had an Indian summer by the time the magazine comes out. Fingers crossed. But let’s push on with the Latin words for various colours, & this time, black & white, ooooooooo...

There are quite a few words for grades of black in Latin - niger/nigra; nigrescens, meaning becoming black; nigricans, meaning blackish; anthracinus, meaning coal black; fuliginosus/fulgineus, meaning sooty - & a garden border of black & white plants would certainly cause a stir, but sadly, there aren’t enough black plants to make it a viable plan. The only plant I know of which is really properly black is Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’, a splendid ornamental grass which has little purple flowers in the summer. It really does have jet black blades of grass & is extremely striking in a border or a rockery. But there are plenty of plants which have black in their names, & this usually refers to parts other than the flowers: for example, Helleborus niger has black roots (although its flower is white!), Centaurea nigra has conspicuous black bracts at the base of its flower heads, & Cytisus nigricans, the black broom, is presumably called that because the green of the stems is very dark, although some of these names do need a bit of imagination! Between black & white comes grey. Although there are few grey flowers, it’s a popular foliage colour in the garden, especially when it’s nearer silver. Again, there are all sorts of variations on a theme. Cinereus is ash-grey, as in Leymus cinereus, a hardy giant grass from the States with very grey leaves, & plants which have a habit of turning

ash-grey are known as cinerascens. Griseus is the kind of pearly-grey that you see on the hairy undersides of the leaves of Ceanothus griseus, & argenteus, meaning silver or silvery, is seen in Cistus x argenteus ‘Peggy Sammons’, a rock rose with silvery-green leaves, & Thymus vulgaris ‘Argenteus’, the silver thyme. White is a very popular colour for flowers – indeed, Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Vita Sackville-West’s garden in Kent, has a white ‘room’, where all the flowers & plants are shades of white. The most common term for white is alba, as in Cornus alba, which has small cream flowers, & Wisteria floribunda ‘Alba’, the white wisteria. Related to this is albescens, or becoming white, maybe from yellow or pink, as in Kerria japonica ‘Albescens’, which turns from yellow to white (yaaaaay). Lacteus is a milky-white (recognisable in the word ‘lactose’), & seen in Cotoneaster lacteus, which has creamy-white flowers and white-hairy undersides to the leaves. And finally, for that glistening snow-white, niveus is the name to look for (also used in hand cream!), as in the autumnal Crocus niveus, or nivalis, as in Galathus nivalis, the common snowdrop. So, black & white done & dusted. Next time… euuurrrrkkk, has to be yellow & orange. I’ll keep the smelling salts near…

WINDOWS10 In July, Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 10, was announced and was offered as a free upgrade to a large number of existing users, irrespective of the legitimacy of the original operating system. Microsoft stated their intention of having Windows 10 installed on over 1 billion machines by the end of next year, and indications are that Microsoft is on track to achievedthese ambitions. So what’s the fuss about? Windows 10 is very efficient, meaning that it can run quickly on a relatively low specification or older machine; the look and behaviour is a mixture of Windows 7 and Windows 8, making good use of the Start button, with tiles being available off the start menu for easy access. The general feeling from our users is that it is laid out very logically, and there is minimal transition from earlier versions to Windows 10. One of the new features introduced in Windows 10 is the integration of Microsoft’s intelligent personal assistant Cortana. Cortana allows you to talk to your computer and get it to perform tasks without any keyboard or mouse interaction. It is pretty clever and works well. Internet Explorer has been replaced with a new browser called Edge, which again offers you a speed improvement. However, not all websites are optimised

for Edge just yet. Buying a new machine with Windows 10 installed is a very logical step, but if you are using any old or existing software, check first with your software publisher that the versions you are using are compatible, as this can cause issues. If you are considering upgrading your existing operating system, we would recommend waiting for a few months, maybe until the New Year, as we have seen a variety of deployment problems, including: • The deployment failing to complete, with the machine stuck in loop • Machines failing to boot into Windows 10 and no roll facility back being available • The deployment completing but no users’ data is available • Program incompatibility, including some mainstream antivirus programs • Email programs failing to work We have overcome all issues but some resolutions have been very time-consuming. Needless to say, should you encounter problems, we are happy to resolve these issues for you. We have a variety of new and used machines with Windows 10 installed and running, so there is a wide choice of options for you.

This has to be a great new all-time favourite – all the appeal of being instant but with vibrant fresh food – just get yourself a Kilner mug or jar and go for it!

ING REDIENT S : - 1 nest of thin, quick-cook noodles (preferably rice vermicelli) - 1 tsp organic vegetable bouillon powder or ¼ veg stock cube (or home-made chicken broth)

- a few frozen peas, mangetout or sugarsnaps (shredded) - 1 leaf of spring greens/green cabbage or pak choi, stalk removed and finely shredded - ½ tsp freshly grated ginger

- a good pinch of soft light brown sugar

- ½ clove garlic, crushed

- 1 small carrot, peeled and then peeled again into ribbons

- ¼ red or green chilli, deseeded and finely chopped

- 3-4 spring onions, finely sliced

- juice ½ lime

- 2 tsps soy sauce

M ET HOD Put all the ingredients, except the soy and lime, in a ‘pot’ (0.5L Kilner-style jar). Pour over the boiling water to just about cover everything, pressing the ingredients down. Cover and leave for 8-10 minutes, stirring once or twice, then add the soy sauce and lime juice to taste, and eat!

NEW RISING TALENT

One of the great things about my chosen vocation is being able to champion new, rising and exciting talent and pass on their music to friends and family through my radio programmes. One such emerging star who caught my eyes and ears is the wonderful British singer/songwriter, Ella Eyre, who first found fame when collaborating with Rudimental in 2013 on their number-one selling hit, Waiting All Night, which also went on to win a Brit award for Best British Single of the Year. In 2014, she won a prestigious MOBO Award for best newcomer. Just 21 years old, she has a voice as striking as her huge hair-do. She tells us that her musical influences include Lauryn Hill, Etta James and Basement Jaxx. However, listening to her sing, she puts me in mind of Adele and Amy Winehouse. Her real name is Ella McMahon and her first love was competitive swimming before finding success and plaudits as a singer. She was raised in Ealing, West London, and is of Afro-Jamaican, Maltese and Scottish descent. She studied at Millfield School and attended the world-famous BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology where she studied musical theatre. The BRIT School was also responsible for launching the careers of the aforementioned Adele and Amy. In fact, it was her talents as a songwriter that gave her early commercial success and this venture led to her being discovered and encouraged as a performer in her own right. She found thousands of new fans when supporting the likes of Take That and Olly Murs a few months ago. As if all these credits weren’t enough, Ella also became the face of the advertising campaign for Emporio Armani Diamonds perfume. However, her most recent triumph is the recent release of her excellent debut album, Feline, which is bound to accelerate her ultimate destination of global awareness. Ella embarks on a UK tour in November, so try and catch her while you can.

MAZDA R E V I E W

T E D M AC AU L EY T E ST DR I V E S T H E N EW C X 3 M A Z DA

They may be late on the specialist scene, but with the CX3, Mazda has played a crucial game of catch-up in the cut-throat business of crossovers. It has come up with a sweetly handling and good-looking rival to the established and puzzlingly named Nissan Juke, Citroen Cactus and Vauxhall Mokka. What delayed them isn’t clear, and the Japanese crack at the compact crossover market may be a latecomer, but it is a sweetie of a small and useful SUV well worth the wait. And the money. The company’s styling studio ventured a design to rival the existing competition crossovers, and when the management first set eyes on the full-sized clay model, they did not falter for a second and ordered its immediate build. And the cut-throat area of crossover auto sales was quickly invaded by a slicker, smarter-looking rival to the Jukes, Cactuses and Mokkas...namely the CX3, baby brother to the CX5. Nothing was lost in the downsizing, quite the opposite. The newest challenger on the cylinder block in

the hard-fought crossover class is the personification of style, economy and practicality. What’s more, it is fun to drive. Even Porsche-owning Trophy Wife, a fussy and readily critical driver if a car fails to meet her preferences, was impressed by its firm feeling and crisply slick action six-speed gearbox. To say nothing of the chic styling and ample boot room for her Michael Kors cocktailwear on a party weekend away. It is not wanting on cabin space either, with enough legroom for four grown-ups and a go-any height driver’s equably adjustable seat. The general concensus of opinion among we so-called motoring experts is that the pint-sized CX3, the desirable sibling city car to the CX5, is a trendy and worthy top points

earner. Frugal, too. But in efforts to keep its price tag under £20,000, and this is not meant to be a picky moan, Mazda has perhaps over-indulged in too many plastic variants that could give it a rather cheapskate inside appearance to some buyers. The kit levels are definitely up on some of its rivals and even the entry level models enjoy benefits such as cruise control and touchscreen infotainment, power windows and door locks with a remote keyless entry facility. Because of its hard ride and susceptibility to sharp bumps, it is maybe not as at home on arduous motorway treks as it is in the city, but then you would probably buy it for the second purpose, in-town short commutes, rather than the first, longer and more arduous runs. Overall, in a sector where looks count for such a lot, the petite CX3 is a bargain buy. A winner.... Specification: my favourite, 2.0 2WD SE Nav. BHP118.Max speed 119mph. Zero-to-60mph 9.0secs.Mpg 47.8. Price £18,195.

BOOKHAM FLOOD FORUM

L

ast month’s Look Local article on the Bookham Residents’ Association touched on their involvement in the Bookham Flood Forum and their work in trying to resolve the village’s many drainage problems. Whilst there have been periods of intense rain this year, causing flooding in well-known wet spots, we have been generally spared the long duration of flooding that we experienced last year. However, the Bookham Flood Forum appreciates that there are still many problem areas to resolve, and BRA continues to meet regularly with representatives of SCC, MVDC and Thames Water [TW]. BRA has also been advising the newly-formed Bookham Flood Action Group, in conjunction with the National Flood Forum. Locations of particular concern in the village are: • the central area of the village ie Lower Road at The Crown PH, where flooding continues to be a major problem every time it rains. SCC has carried out

CCTV surveys along Lower Road and we await their analysis of the footage. SCC and MVDC have been requested to instigate a study of the drainage of the whole central area and we await their response. • Dorking Road, where there have been long-standing drainage problems resulting from run-off coming from the direction of Polesden Lacey, Chapel Lane and Admirals Road. BRA has held meetings with SCC’s design section, which has subsequently carried out topographical and hydrogeological studies and is currently working up designs to reduce flows to Dorking Road. • Kennel Lane, The Glade and The Copse, where CCTV investigations have been carried out by Thames Water and the results are awaited. These are just a few of the many areas under investigation. If anyone knows of areas which are subject to flooding as a result of drainage blockages, please email BRA’s Michael Agius on meagius@gmail.com.

Their aim was to raise over £5000.00 for research into the cause, cure and prevention of all forms of dementia, as well as finding better ways of caring for those who have it.

The event was opened by local MP, Sir Paul Beresford, who thanked all those taking part for helping to raise awareness about dementia and for going the extra mile for a cause that touches so many of us and impacts all of society. It was an uplifting morning, with members of the local community having the opportunity to get to know one another a little better, as well as contributing to making a difference.

rowds in Leatherhead town centre were treated to a celebration of musical and dramatic performances from local talent as part of the Arts Alive Festival and Heritage Open Days on Saturday 12th September 2015. The four hour spectacular was the first of over 100 creative arts events which will take place throughout the district over September and October in the 21st annual Arts Alive Festival. Energetic performances by local bands, dance groups and poets left the delighted crowds wanting more. Particularly popular was the mixture of musical genres showcased by musicians eager to entertain. Talented duo Dare to be Charlie performed a great acoustic set, a local steel pan group played a selection of well-known tunes, and The Wildest Way and Quiet Wish performed a laidback folky musical set. Families clearly enjoyed the experience, with children

treated to face-painting and amused by street performer Boo Hiccup’s display of balloon-modelling and magic. CBBC’s Chris Jarvis from Show Me Show Me was a real draw for children who patiently lined up in the Leatherhead Theatre to see the star for a ‘meet and greet’. Enthusiasm was high for the creative writing trail on the day where many managed to locate the poems hanging from trees, found quotes in secret envelopes and discovered creative writing posters written by the district’s residents. The Arts Alive committee and representatives from Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) were busy handing out Arts Alive brochures, packed full of the varied programme of events, whilst also encouraging visitors to take part in the festival. Brochures are available to pick up from MVDC’s Pippbrook offices, the HelpShop in Leatherhead, Dorking Halls or online, by visiting

ou may have seen elsewhere that Dorking residents are also considering setting up a council for Dorking. They have now reached the stage where they have the required number of signatures on a petition to request MVDC to carry out a Community Governance Review. That is the next formal step for them. Achieving sufficient signatures on the petition is a key initial step and took about a year. For a proposal to be formally considered by MVDC, we in Bookham need a petition signed by about 700 Bookham voters, requesting a review. Given this, MVDC is then obliged to undertake a Community Governance Review to decide if a Village Council should be established. As part of this process, MVDC would carry out a consultation to gauge support for the idea in the community. The BEAM team launched Bookham’s petition at Village Day, and thanks to all who signed the petition immediately on the day and to those who took away our leaflet to consider doing it later. The printed petition form, which is part of the leaflet, can be completed and returned via post or the drop box in the Library. We are pleased to see that this is happening, as people come to realise the benefits. As an alternative to the printed version, if you prefer, you can sign the petition online via the BEAM for Bookham website. Just go to http://beamforbookham. co.uk/index.php and complete the simple form.

Signing the petition does not commit anyone to anything, but it is an essential step to set the wheels in motion for a Community Governance Review by Mole Valley. To learn more about why we think Bookham should have a Village Council, visit the website www.beamforbookham.uk As we talk to many residents about the benefits that an elected Village Council could bring to our community, we take careful note of all the issues raised and update the Frequently Asked Questions section of the website to take these into account – have a look at http:// beamforbookham.uk/frequently-asked-questions One common question is about cost. This depends on what the community eventually wishes the council to do. So although it is too early to be precise, it is important to understand that a household contribution of just 50 pence per week for a Band D property would generate over £140,000 for Bookham to spend in Bookham. 75 pence per week would generate over £210,000. With this size of fund, we could support our valuable volunteer organisations better, fix ongoing issues about which we continually complain, and develop new services and facilities to meet the needs of the community in a fast changing world. Simply, we could make Bookham better. Please step forward and sign the petition. Either email info@beamforbookham.uk and a copy of the petition will be sent to you or go to http:// beamforbookham.co.uk/ and complete the petition online or contact 07836 646456

s Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night approach, local officers will be out as usual, visiting shops and licensed premises to ask for their co-operation in minimising the risks of people buying fireworks or alcohol underage, as well as other items, such as flour and eggs which may not be intended for cooking!! Although the majority of people enjoy these festivities in a pleasant and friendly atmosphere, some people use the opportunity to target vulnerable residents and cause criminal damage. Please speak to your children to ensure that they do not throw anything at other people’s houses or, for their own safety, knock on doors of people they do not know. As in previous years, police will be out in force on the evening of Hallowe’en and will take a very dim view of anyone causing any damage or intimidating residents. If you live near someone you consider may be vulnerable to this type of targeting, please visit them, and if you think it is necessary, let your local officers know of your concerns. You can contact your local team on 01483 639886 or by email to molevalley@surrey.pnn.police.uk On a totally different matter, we were very pleased to note a significant decline over the summer in the

number of reports we received about telephone scams – where people had been tricked into giving money or their bank details to people pretending to be from the police, the bank or building society. When this first came to our notice, we tried to spread the word about this type of fraud via many methods, including handing out information in local banks and shopping centres. This may have had some impact on its decline? Sadly, however, it appears to have started up again and we would like to reinforce the message that genuine callers from the police or other organisations, such as banks, building societies etc., will NEVER ask you to disclose personal account details. Please help us to spread the word to anyone you may believe could be vulnerable to this type of fraud. If you have any concerns yourself or feel that someone could benefit from being contacted by their local policing team (or by me as the Crime Reduction Advisor for the District), then please call us on 101. This time of year also tends to see an increase in the number of rogue traders going door-to-door, offering to do “work” for inflated prices. If you have any concerns about this, or have been targeted yourself, please let us know by calling us on 101.
