For those of you who didn’t know, our lovely Editor Ros, got married this summer. We thought we would sneak in a photo of the happy couple for you to see (don’t tell her though!!) Congratulations to Ros & Charles. We wish you every happiness xxx

Welcome to October

It’s been a busy time in Bookham this past month; the sun really shone for Heritage Day on Saturday 14th September. In fact the whole weekend was a real scorcher! I hope you enjoy our photo coverage within. As well as this, Mole Valley District Council have joined forces with not for profit organisation, ‘City to Sea’ to push a fabulous National initiative locally. ‘Refill Mole Valley’ allows you to re-fill your water bottles at various top up points around the village, cutting plastic waste with each fill-up ! This is such a great initiative and can save you some £’s too! See inside for details. Huge ‘Look Local’ Congratulations must go to the ‘Star-Tastic Gymnastic Club’. You may remember that we featured them earlier this year when they were about to embark on a trip to the USA to compete in the International Association of Independent Gymnastic Clubs World Championships ! We are delighted to report their impressive achievement’s on page 20. We have two lovely floral events covered on our centre pages this month. Both were equally enjoyed by all who attended I’m very sure. Stunning arrangements and green fingers galore, huge talent indeed on display at each of these lovely local events. Finally, a date for your diary next month: 2nd November for the Rotary Brunch! See page 16 for details. That’s it from me for now. Remember that the clocks will be going back on Sunday 27th October, so let’s all enjoy the last few weeks of light evenings in 2019. Until next time, do take care,

Ros

David Smith from Wishing Well Bookham with MVDC Refill champion Emily von Reibnitz.

Visit Tamas & Ildiko Kiss at the Chocolatierire.

Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) has joined forces with not-for-profit organisation, City to Sea’s, national Refill Campaign and established a local initiative, Refill Mole Valley. So far, MVDC has been backed by SES Water and a number of business partners and local groups. An estimated 7.7 billion plastic water bottles are bought across the UK each year, resulting in substantial amounts of single-use plastic waste. The wider Refill Scheme aims to cut plastic bottle use by tens of millions each year, in addition to substantially increasing the availability of high-quality drinking water. Businesses offering passers-by the opportunity to refill their bottles with water at no cost will be listed as a Refill Station on the free Refill phone app so their establishment, complete with refill window sticker, can easily be located by anyone on the go. Regional Refill Coordinator, Mala Nathan, said: “Every time we refill a re-usable bottle instead of buying and throwing away a single-use bottle we reduce the amount of plastic and fuel being used, save a bit of money

Joanne & Dawn from The Grange @ No 5 MVDC newest Refill recruits.

and help clean up our towns & open spaces too. We’re so excited to see the launch of Refill Mole Valley which will make it easy to look out for the stickers or check the Refill app to find out where you can top up your water bottle for free.” Local Bookham resident Emily von Reibnitz (pictured here with David Smith from Wishing Well) has volunteered to help promote the Refill scheme (by encouraging local businesses to sign up to the scheme and by spreading the word via social media). Bookham retailer David Smith from Wishing Well signed up to the Refill scheme two years ago, closely followed Tamas and Ildiko Kiss from Ildiko’s Chocolatierie, a year later. David Smith said “ I am delighted to see MVDC take the initiative and get behind this great scheme and to see more businesses get onboard” Wishing Well & Ildiko’s have now been joined by, Head Office, Del Fucco, Fine Fettle, Crazy Bean and The Grange @ No 5. We look forward to more over the coming weeks and months. For more information go to: https://refill.org.uk/ or http://www.molevalley.gov.uk/refill

18 Looklocal Magazine - October 2019

As children across the country return to the classroom, local schools are being encouraged to apply for up to £500 worth of free outdoor learning resources to allow youngsters to get hands on with nature. Applications for the Local School Nature Grants are open from now up until the 22nd November 2019 from the charity Learning through Landscapes, which is distributing £550,000 of funding raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, with funds being awarded from Postcode Local Trust. Through the programme, Learning through Landscapes wants to transform the way we currently think of outdoor education and show the learning and play potential that exists within all school grounds regardless of their setting and outdoor spaces, empowering teachers to be able to take the teaching of any curriculum subject outdoors. As well as receiving up to £500 worth of outdoor resources of their choosing, school staff will also receive a two-hour training session on how to get the most out of the equipment. The learning resources and the training sessions available are entirely customisable; meaning infant, primary and secondary schools can choose which items will best suit their learners and the setting that they will be delivered in. The programme is also open to special schools and pupil referral units. Applications are being actively encouraged from schools whose pupils are aged 5+ and are passionate about making environmental improvements for the benefit of their pupils, staff and the community. For more info & to apply for funding, please visit Learning through Landscapes’ website: www.ltl.org.uk/ projects/local-school-nature-grants

Estates have been replanted and cultivated, and beautiful wines little known varieties. ASH DIEBACK

COMING TO A TREE NEAR YOU... Ash Dieback originated from a fungal disease in East Asia with spores dispersed by the wind arriving in Europe in the 1990s, appearing in the UK in 2004 and reaching Surrey in 2014. 90% of ash trees in Denmark have been wiped out and Ash Dieback will do the same in the UK. We have 150 million mature ash trees of which 4.1 million are urban ash trees and 4 million are alongside roads. Scientists project that only 2-3% of ash trees will be immune – we will lose the rest. Where is Your Ash Tree? * Is it near a road? * Is it over a driveway or footpath? * Does it have a Tree Preservation Order? (Mole Valley website list of TPOs) * Owners with ash trees near footpaths, pavements and public rights of way need to be particularly vigilant * In late summer check your ash trees: if a branch or section has no leaves it is probably dead Your Responsibilities * To avoid injury to others as a result of tree failure * You have a ‘common law’ duty of care to ensure neighbours, visitors and trespassers are safe * Avoid disturbance to bird nests, bat roosts and wildlife * Keep deadwood to help insects survive: ash dieback is their Armageddon! * Don’t fell if you don’t have to

28 Looklocal Magazine - October 2019

If your tree shows signs of ash dieback… * Find a Professional for diagnosis and felling * Compost, garden bin or burn your leaves * Offer your wood to neighbours * Replant ASAP to minimise landscape loss * 3/2/1/ formula: Plant 3 new trees for loss of a large tree, 2 for a medium tree and 1 tree for a small tree * Use British grown trees: native aspen, alder, field maple, sycamore, birch, rowan, oak, disease resistant elm A full report on Ash Dieback, what to look for and official information has been prepared by the BRA Tree Wardens. Mole Valley DRAFT Local Plan October 2019 Dear All,

September 2019

You are probably aware that Mole Valley Planning Policy Officers are to publish the new DRAFT Local Plan on 21st October this year, inviting public Representations during a 6 week Consultation period. It is current Council policy not to inform the people of any sites that have been submitted until the October Plan, at which point we are to learn of their “preferred options” and indeed, their rejections. From knowledge gained in the Housing and Travellers Sites Plan 2014, that you will recall was terminated, or with current observation, it would seem that serious consideration is being given to one or two very large strategic sites. As an owner of a small site with housing potential, I find this unsatisfactory because the peoples’ thoughts will be concentrated on the Preferred sites to the disadvantage of those sites which they may well think are equally or even more acceptable. I have therefore prepared a Presentation of the information I sent to Mole Valley, which I believe should enter the public domain now, in order that as many people as possible will be able to make a better informed judgement in October. My desire, of course, is to encourage support, but I am aware that the opposite view may be taken. I therefore hope you will respect my integrity and share my belief that this site can be developed for housing in a manner that will cause no harm whatsoever to anyone. Should you wish to receive my Presentation, please react to me personally with your e-mail address and I will respond personally by e-mail. Yours sincerely, Anthony Farino (Tony) anthonyfarino@talktalk.net

GARDEN BOOKHAM, FETCHAM & DISTRICT

SOCIETY SHOW 2019

Many of you responded to the Look Local advert & came along to our Annual Flower Show at the beautiful 15th Centuary Tithe Barn in Manor House Lane, Little Bookham and we so appreciate the Nicholls family allowing us to share this precious venue yet again. The morning was a bustle of activity as entries poured in. Every year is different & it is interesting to see what people can produce. The fruit & vegetable sections had appetising examples of local produce & such a wide variety. It is not until you have tried to match up 4 identical potatoes or 10 strings of red-currants that you have really looked at produce in detail. The flower section was stunning with generous pots, troughs and vases of flowers & carefully selected specimens & they dressed the barn beautifully. I am always in awe of the meticulously arranged vases of flowers, floating bowls of blooms and button holes. Such care & artistry goes into the selection of materials & flowers & the precise positioning. They were so beautiful to see & so difficult to judge. It was also very encouraging to see such creative entries in the Children’s Sections and so many entries in the Craft Section. We really do have some amazing cooks & bakers & the entries in the Domestic Section looked both beautiful & mouthwatering. I was so impressed at all the Men’s Carrot Cakes. Pity they couldn’t all win first prize & that we couldn’t sample them. Once everything was staged and checked, a very efficient team of judges came in and worked very carefully through every exhibit. Our thanks to them for

32 Looklocal Magazine - October 2019

their time, judgement and guidance. When the show opened to the public, everyone was eager to see results and enjoy the display. Then what could be nicer than to sit in the sunshine in the garden enjoying delicious home made cakes and tea from beautiful china cups. Presenting this show has been a perfect example of teamwork, so thank-you to all who have made it run so smoothly. Also a very big thank-you to all who have entered or come along to make it such a success. It is so exciting to see so many people entering for the first time, even just one category. Perhaps more will be inspired to take part next year. If you did miss it this year, join us next year on Saturday 11th July. Perhaps you would like to join in our other activities. Our meetings are usually held in the Harrison Room at 7.30 on the last Monday of the month beginning with refreshments. This year we still have the following meetingsMonday 28th October - The History of Squires Nurseries given by Sarah Squire Monday 25th November - AGM and floral and material wreath making. Details of our exciting 2020 program of talks, activities, outings and of course the show will be available soon. Floral Fun AT THE O LD B A R N H A L L

I was delighted to be invited to join Bookham Flower Club for their September meeting, especially as their guest speaker was National Demonstrator Sandy Bailey and her theme was Seasonal Changes. I was made very welcome by the group and saw many familiar faces and had the chance to catch up with some old friends. After the meeting was called to order and the club’s general business was taken care of, it was time for Sandy and her very efficient helper, Nina, to step up and take the stage. I was left in awe of her seemingly, effortless ability, to build the most beautiful displays, from flowers and foliage that can be found in gardens and as we are out walking. A word of caution‌It would appear that flower arrangers are a wily bunch. Keeping their eyes peeled for props and items that can be used for their displays. Sandy used a really lovely misshapen branch of ivy she had spotted whilst out walking her dog, so she popped back later

with a saw and acquired it! I am not suggesting for one moment that Sandy acquired it from a garden, but if you see a member of Bookham Flower Club loitering outside be warned!! Sandy Bailey was a lively, funny and very entertaining speaker and demonstrator. I freely admit I have not a jot of artistic flair to be found in so much as one gene, but even I felt compelled to go home and break open the oasis! Thank you Bookham Flower Club for such an enjoyable afternoon. Bookham Flower Club are a very friendly, vibrant bunch and welcome new members. As well as the meetings and demonstrations, there are shows, workshops and excursions. If you think you might be interseted and would like to know more do get in touch, I know you would be made to feel very welcome. THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Fascination guaranteed with this programme of talks Another really varied selection of topics is scheduled for the last quarter of the year in the monthly lecture series organised by the Leatherhead & District Local History Society. The talks, all scheduled at the Letherhead Institute on the third Friday of each month, will kick off on Friday, 18 October with The British Hedgerow - Past and Present. Professor Pat Wiltshire will outline how the hedge came to be and how its management and exploitation have influenced the nature of the local landscape. She will also discuss the natural history of hedges and their importance for Patricia Wiltshire biodiversity. As well as being a keen L&DLHS member, Pat Wiltshire is a renowned expert on the relevance of nature in forensic science. Her new book, Traces has been described as ‘part rhapsody for the natural world and part lecture on forensic science’. It demonstrates how a deep understanding of both is integral to the success in solving crimes. On Friday, 15 November, Jane Lewis of Surrey History Centre will talk on Fashion and Folly, describing how people have done alarming and bizarre things over the years to enhance their beauty and be regarded as fashionable. Our ancestors’ clothes and makeup were seriously dangerous. They went to extraordinary lengths to be ‘à la mode’. Finally on Friday, 6 December, the L&DLHS will

hold its traditional Christmas Miscellany of three shorter talks preceded by seasonal cheer and refreshments. This year, Society chairman John Rowley will introduce Commander Alexander ‘Alastair’ Guthrie Denniston of Ashtead. A wartime code-breaker, he headed the Government Code and Cypher School, forerunner of GCHQ. L&DLHS archaeology secretary Nigel Bond will follow up with a review of the Test Pitting project at Rowhurst, one of Leatherhead’s most historic centres, last May. He will reveal what was found, its significance for historical knowledge of the area and what may happen next. The programme will end with Society stalwart Bill Whitman presenting a short photo and film programme entitled Walking in Leatherhead. This was shot by Gill Whitman, mainly on the town meadow. All of the talks start at 8pm in the Letherhead Institute in Leatherhead High Street with drinks and refreshments served from 7.30pm. Entrance is just £2.00. For more information about the L&DLHS and the Leatherhead Museum at Hampton Cottage in Church Street, go to www.leatherheadhistory.org.

The End is Nigh - well for Windows 7

On January 14th 2020 Microsoft will officially end extended support of Windows 7. Yes in less than 2 months Windows 7 will not receive any software support or updates. But what does this actually mean for you? In very simple terms it means that your Windows 7 device will become less and less useful if you use the device for any internet connected activity. For example if you use the machine for online banking, your bank will stop you gaining access to your online accounts, as they view your computer as being a security risk to their systems. Bit by bit this will become widespread and most online shopping systems will block your ability to carry out transactions with them for the same reason. We are not saying your machine will suddenly stop working on the 14 January. Your files and photos will still be accessible, the machine will power on as before, but you will be at greater risk to security breaches, and your ability to communicate and collaborate with others will be much reduced.

What can you do about this? 1: Upgrade the software on your machine to Windows 10 (the worlds most used operating system). This does carry a cost of ÂŁ130 for the software alone, and your machine may not be designed to work efficiently with Windows 10 Or 2: Replace your computer with a new Windows 10 machine. With costs as low as ÂŁ250 for new machines this is probably the most economical route and you get a brand new, up to date machine, with a full warranty. We can transfer all your data from the old to the new machine and ensure the new machine is ready for the years ahead, with minimal disruption for you. Beat the rush- act now

LOVERS!

I am looking to add to my existing team of genuine dog lovers who enjoy looking after dogs when their owners go on holiday. This does not have to be a full time commitment. Some of my carers only offer weekends or school holidays. You must be at home during the day with no more than 1 dog of your own & no children under 6 years of age & have your own secure garden. Ideal for someone working from home, a school teacher or administrator, house person or retired.

Gardening Matters CUTTINGS

And now for my next trick… cuttings. Softwood, semiripe, hardwood, oh the fun. Cuttings produce genetically-identical plants, handy for varieties that revert, for example. They’re also quicker than seed, so all good. Success is almost guaranteed if you follow the basics at the right time of year, although I break the rules regularly with almost equal success, especially in our weird weather these days, so don’t angst too much. Softwood cuttings - abelia, acer, campanula, fuchsias - generally root quickly in summer, but are more susceptible to wilting. Choose young, healthy, firm growth, fill pots with a 50/50 mix of compost and sharp sand/gravel, cut pieces 2-4 ins long and remove the lower leaves to about ½ way up. Dip the ends in powdered rooting hormone to improve the success rate, insert into the compost, firm gently, water thoroughly and put in a moist, close atmosphere. Cuttings can live happily on a windowsill in a room with good light, but not strong midday sun. Maintain humidity with a poly bag or 2L plastic bottle, cut in half to fit closely over the pot. Check daily, misting them if they’re flagging. Moisture on leaves and stems helps them recover from wilting until they generate new root systems. Don’t water the compost again until it’s drying out. Once established, carefully separate the root mass and pot up. Easy peasy. Semi-ripe cuttings - rhododendron, ceanothus, berberis, escallonia - are pieces of growth 3-4 ins long

that aren’t yet fully mature. They’re hardening at the base, still flexible further up and are taken from July end of September, either cleanly below a bud or with a ‘heel’, a thin sliver of bark and wood from the old stem. The more mature the shoot, the longer it’ll take to root. They too need humid conditions, hormone powder, a 50/50 mix and shade when too bright. Once rooted, leave undisturbed till spring. Then remove the rooted cutting carefully under cool conditions, spreading the roots as you pot up. Hardwood cuttings - forsythia, honeysuckle, willow, laurel - are dormant, woody, pencil-thick stems, 1 season old. They’re taken at the end of the season and root successfully in soft, light soil in the open. Choose a weed-free, well-drained spot, sheltered from winds. Take cuttings 10-12 ins long, remove the soft tips and cut off above the uppermost bud and below the bottom bud, leaving 3-4 leaves on evergreens and semi-evergreens. Dig a V-shaped trench, sprinkling a layer of sharp sand in the bottom to help drainage and encourage rooting. Dip them in rooting hormone and plant to about ¾ of their length, a few inches apart. Replace the soil in the trench as you go, treading down the surface to firm in. Leave in position till rooted, which may be several months. Then either line them out in short row beds or pot up into containers. Hmm, a bit of a gallop through cuttings, but go on, give it a try. You know you want to.

a poached salmon celebration centrepiece Ask the fishmonger for a whole side of salmon with the pin bones and skin removed. (serves 10-12)

ingredients - (A fish poacher is ideal, but can also be poached in a large roasting tin with water to cover the bottom and covered tightly in foil. A temperature food probe is useful if you have one. ) Add to the water the following: • 2 x bay leaves • 1 Lemon • handful of black peppercorns • 1 cucumber • 1 lemon sliced • drizzle of any oil. • watercress

method

1. Bring the water to the boil until steaming, oil the surface the salmon is going to cook on with a pastry brush. Then place the whole side of salmon on the water or in the poacher. 2. Steam on the hob on a medium heat for 15-20 minutes. The thickest part of the fish should be 55 degrees centigrade for the fish to be just cooked. If you prefer your salmon cooked well, continue cooking until the temperature is 65 degrees centigrade, but the fish will be drier. 3. Remove from the heat and slide onto a long serving platter to cool. 4. Cool for one and a half hours max then dab juices up with some kitchen roll. 5. Peel the cucumber every other strip so that it is stripey then slice very thinly. 6. overlap the cucumber slices from one end of the fish to the other and cut the ends off the lemon. Cut through lengthwise then lie flat side down and slice thinly to decorate down along the cucumber 7. Garnish with watercress or rocket.

Porsche Cayman T CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

In bygone days, when rashness, flash and show-off were my middle names I owned...successively...a Sunbeam Talbot 90, three E-type Jaguars, a Mercedes sports and a scarlet Lamborghini Espada. Then I grew up and awoke to a sense of responsibility which took the fine form of a Porsche Cayman, in my humble opinion the greatest value for money sports car that has ever been the temptation for the more monied among us, or the not so well-heeled, to want to be seen driving. It is driven by Trophy Wife much more often than me and she loves it. No wonder. It does exactly what she tells it to do. A bit like me! Whatever mood any driver finds themselves in, reflected in the right foot, the Cayman’s response is instant whether to be docile or daring, snail pace or involved in motorway top speeds. And it is equally at ease whether dashing at an M-way rate of knots or lingering idly along twisty and narrow country lanes, evidenced lately by a journey of the Macauley-twosome to deepest Cornwall, that give the car such an agreeable response, we would not swop it...except for another one!! The latest has just come on the market, the Cayman T, an extension of the fine and desirable reputation this brand of Porsche has developed. Among the mass of so-called super and sports cars, this newest and freshest challenger has just about everything even the fussiest of owners could want...speed and comfort, all in absolute safety. It zooms from zero-62 mph in 4.7 seconds and,

if our authorities allowed it, would roar onto the 170mph mark. Phew! You can feel chuffed just sitting on that potential. You know the stunning acceleration is there at the merest pressure on the pedal if needs be. The up-to-date sports car market is bursting with ranks of rivals and hot shots like the Alpine A110 Pure or the Toyota GR Supra Pro which loom large but Porsche have honed their challenger...nay...leader...to the finest of levels and performance with economy to satisfy the most tight-fisted, like me, in our midst. The so-called add-ons that can boost the price to £67,000 are to my mind not such a good idea or value when they are not really necessary. So, what makes the now-lighter Cayman with its sportier chassis such a genuine treat? It is mid-engined and superbly balanced. In my opinion just about the finest handling car on the highways and byways scene. It goes around corners with a focus on the challenge that is laser-like. The weighty steering, its mightly powerful and effective brakes, all combine to fill whomsoever is behind the wheel with utter and complete confidence in this compact offering of motoring perfection. As an all rounder, lolly-wise and good looking without being OTT, the five-star Cayman is a real beaut - and the latest edition merely serves to underpin its already matured assets. Specification: Porsche Cayman T. Top speed 170mph. Mpg 32.8. 0-62 in 4.7 secs. Price£54,358.

Do you care for someone who is becoming forgetful or know a carer who needs time off? The Conservatory Club may be able to help. Mid Surrey Dementia Care Trust has owned a conservatory adjacent to the Fairfield Centre in Leatherhead since 1995, initially to provide premises for the Alzheimer’s Society to run a small social club there for people in the early stages of living with dementia. The Trust took over full operation of the club in 2003 and in 2019, the Club’s work was recognized when it was among Surrey’s short-listed nominees for the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. The Conservatory Club has two main aims: • To help people with memory difficulties to retain their communication and social skills in a relaxed environment. • To provide relief to carers from the demanding responsibilities of caring. The Club Manager is responsible for the daily running of the Club, which is open from 10am to 3pm, Monday to Friday. The Manager, supported by a volunteer, helps members to participate in social interaction and activities in a relaxed environment, and close contact is maintained with carers to ensure that a member’s wellbeing is paramount. The daily charge is currently £20 and this includes lunch, refreshments and participation in Fairfield Centre special events and classes, if they are appropriate to our members’ needs. If you think membership of the Club could help, please call Pauline Simons (Club Manager) on 07913-707704 or email: info@midsurreydementiacare.co.uk. The Club could not operate without the help of volunteers, each of whom assists on one day a week. If you think that you might be able to help us by volunteering, please contact Pauline Simons using the contact details above. DAME JUDI DENCH BECOMES ARTS AL!VE PATRON

National treasure, BAFTA winner and seven-time Oscar nominee Dame Judi Dench will be this year’s Arts Alive festival patron. Dame Judi, who lives in Surrey, is “delighted” to lend her name to Mole Valley’s community arts festival, which this year, in honour of the legendary British actress, has a theatre and film theme. Supported by Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) and taking place throughout October, Arts Alive is the biggest arts festival in the South East. As well as film and theatre, there will be music, literature, dance, painting, poetry, modern and traditional crafting and horticulture. Many events are free to attend or under £5 a ticket. Film screenings include Hidden in Plain Sight on Thursday 31 October at Dorking’s Green Room theatre. This event features a series of films shot in the Surrey Hills by local, nationally-acclaimed artists and filmmakers. Theatre includes writer and street performer Nick Casssenbaum’s big-hearted Edinburgh Festival smash hit Bubble Schmeisis at The Stepping Stones pub on Friday 4 October. Theatre and cinema Dorking Halls will also once again be putting on a number of events during the festival, including screenings of productions by the National Theatre, the Royal Opera and the Bolshoi Ballet. They will also host the Wilderland Film

Festival on 21 October, which features groundbreaking short films that provide unparalleled insight into some of the world’s most incredible wildlife. The launch event for Arts Alive will take place in Leatherhead High Street on Saturday 21 September from 10am to 12pm. This year, the celebrations will be led by theatre company Cabareilidh, who combine staged folk cabaret with a traditional Surrey ceilidh. There will also be activities for children including face painting and a knights’ battle, courtesy of the medieval festival that will be happening in Leatherhead on the same day. More information will be announced soon. Councillor Stephen Cooksey, Leader of Mole Valley District Council, said: “We are delighted that one of Britain’s greatest actresses accepted Arts Alive’s invitation to be festival patron. This is fantastic news for our local arts festival, which is incredibly now in its 23rd year. MVDC is proud to support Arts Alive; it is a unique opportunity for the community to come together and engage with the arts.” See the full line-up of events in the festival brochure, which comes out at the end of August. Events will also be listed online at www.arts-alive.co.uk.

“If you like, I can fix that guttering for you - for cash?” NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION

Hearing that kind of phrase is, for some reason, more common towards the latter part of every year. Perhaps, with winter approaching, opportunist “rogue traders” see a good opportunity to take advantage of people’s vulnerabilities and the desire to have their homes safe, secure and watertight for the coming colder months? Surrey Police continues to work alongside a number of partner agencies, developing initiatives to help all members of our communities be and feel safe in their own homes. As part of ongoing work we do already, your Neighbourhood Teams are focusing particular attention on providing guidance, support and awareness to members of the community on how to spot and deal with cold callers, rogue traders and distraction burglars. You should know, however, that you have a right to refuse to deal with anyone who comes to your door uninvited. You can always refuse to answer if you have any concerns about the caller. If you have a door chain and do intend to answer the door, then put the chain across before opening the door. Distraction burglaries can be particularly upsetting as they prey on people’s trust in “authority”. For example, a person may call, saying that they are from a utility company, calling to check on reports of “faulty” water pipes, gas leaks or problems with the electricity supply. Once they gain entry, they will distract the resident by asking them to keep an eye on a tap or meter, while others go elsewhere in the house to “carry out

56 Looklocal Magazine - October 2019

checks”. Many people have been distressed to find they have had money, bank cards, jewellery or other items taken in just a few moments. Please insist on seeing appropriate identification for anyone claiming to be from a utility company. You can also telephone the company to find out if they are operating in the area. In fact, even if a uniformed police officer calls at your door they will be perfectly happy for you to ask to see their warrant card to identify themselves, or you can even phone us on 101 to confirm an officer’s details to your satisfaction. Rogue traders tend to be people who offer to carry out work for cash, quite often for sums of money far greater than is actually justified. Examples could be, repairs to “leaking” guttering, replacing ridge tiles, repainting windows and sills, cutting back hedges and other general maintenance work. Many of these people are not even competent to carry out work of this kind and apply pressure to get the customer to go to their bank to draw out the large sum of cash in payment. You can always contact Trading Standards to ask for names of reputable organisations that will carry out work for a fair price. In short, traders who offer to carry out work for cash uninvited should be viewed with some suspicion. You have a right to refuse to deal with anyone who calls at your home uninvited. If you are ever put in this position and feel in any way vulnerable, please call the police on 999.
