There’s certainly a bit of a Nip in the Air today! Not surprising, given that we are fast approaching the time of year when our clocks turn back an hour. Sunday 31st October is the date this year, so we still have a couple of weeks to savour the lighter evenings. As regular readers will know, we have enjoyed a long relationship with the Leatherhead & District Local History Society. It’s always a pleasure to include their interesting local features, and this month is no exception, especially when they have kindly written about us! See page 47 for the low down… It’s been a while since our last competition, so we thought a fun ‘Find the Pumpkin’ Cash Prize Draw might go down well? Enter by email for the chance to win £25. See page 11 for details and remember, ‘You’ve got to be in it, to win it !’ There is a lovely outside family event taking place at Polesden Lacey this month; ‘Polesden Ignites’ promises to be a wonderful evening out - see page 16 for details. It really is great to see our What’s on pages filling up again. I hope there will be something of interest for everyone in this months selections. Ladies Football is getting a boost in the form of support from the local Rotarians. See page 22 for this. Last but certainly not least, we are delighted to include coverage on our centre pages from the ever popular and wonderful 2021 Bookham Village Day! Congratulation to all who were involved in organising this event, a fabulous day was enjoyed for sure! Wishing you all a good month ahead, Keep Well, until next time,

Ros

DENTAL IMPLANTS

Tel: 01372 454355

Excellent quality dentistry in a friendly caring atmosphere 8 Looklocal Magazine - October 2021

This month we caught up with one of our new clients, Neil Dickins, to show him around his new property. Within three weeks of the house purchase we did all external work identified by the survey as needing attention and internal beautification to bring it up to spec before the first guests arrived. Tell us a little about yourself? “I fell in love with theatre whilst at McMaster Uni in Canada, and was told I must go to London. I duly came to study Shakespeare but became ensnared in the thorns of an English rose (the red of Lancashire version) and never left.” What do you do? “I founded Intellectual Capital Resources (IC Resources) 22 years ago to focus on ‘deep tech’ recruitment (all the tech that’s in your phone, or a satellite, or an electric car….ie everything except IT). The company is now 70 people with offices in Reading, London, Munich, China and the US.” What were you hoping to achieve when making an investment with BTLH? “I make very high risk, seed stage investments in tech companies, and wanted an investment to balance my portfolio. Like all assets, property values fluctuate but the likely downside compared to stocks (or early stage companies!!) is lower.” Why did you choose BTLH? “For me the most critical word in seeking success is ‘niche’. I loved the niche, under-represented ‘mid-term let’ idea as outlined by Adrian. My due diligence consisted of meeting his business partners Alex and Lucy, who also impressed me greatly and convinced me that the company was solid and would deliver on its promises. Advertising feature

The great thing about BTLH is the space it has carved out for itself needs a particular kind of focus and attention, which I don’t think potential competitors will understand even if they try to emulate BTLH. The other reason, of course, is that the ROI makes sense.” What has your experience been working with BTLH? “Excellent from the outset. I’m 100% confident that the outstanding service levels will continue. We’ve also rented the house out for a brilliant medium-term rental even before it has been listed, which I’m sure is a positive portent of things to come.” Any advice to someone else who might find themselves in your situation? “Call me to invest in some crazy risky early stage tech companies. Eschew sensible investments like BTLH!” So… if you find yourself looking for an investment all piquant with crazy risk and excitement, contact Neil Dickins direct to hand over your hard-earned cash for him to invest in some dodgy early stage tech companies – and if you feel more like Neil, then get in touch with BTLH and see if we can find you a little gem like his so you can make a sensible investment. Neil’s parting words to us were: “I might start thinking about my next project with you guys…” You heard it here first! Can BTLH help you find the perfect property? Get in touch and have a chat: 020 7550 9396 or hello@buytolethunter.com. For more information check out www.buytolethunter.com Quadrant Road, Richmond, London, TW9 1DH

FIRE & LIGHT TRAIL COMES TO POLESDEN LACEY THIS OCTOBER

A new after-dark experience is coming to the Edwardian gardens at the National Trust’s Polesden Lacey this autumn. From 22 October - 7 November, visitors will have the chance to see Polesden Lacey like never before at the first-ever IGNITE at Polesden Lacey. Deep in the Surrey Hills, only four miles from Dorking, Polesden Lacey was once home to the famous Edwardian hostess Margaret Greville, who entertained royalty and the celebrities of her time. The gardens offer something for every season and autumn is no exception: once the vibrant and rich greens of summer disappear the whole estate is encompassed in gold as the leaves turn. As twilight falls, the IGNITE magic begins. Expect the unexpected, with glimpses of fairies that could be dancing in lanterns, fiery fish and woodland wildlife sculpted in willow, as you stroll through an enchanting landscape. Lit by lanterns, wander between flickering flames and majestic trees - from one amazing space to another - on a quietly magical meander. Within this fiery interpretation of flora and fantasy, set to an atmospheric soundscape, there are moments of playful discovery and reflection.

16 Looklocal Magazine - October 2021

The trail has been specially designed for visitors of all ages to enjoy. “We’re so excited to welcome visitors to Polesden Lacey for this enchanting trail this autumn. It is the first time we’ve hosted something like this at Polesden Lacey and we can’t wait to see the gardens illuminated in such a magical way,” said Katherine Mills, National Trust General Manager for Polesden Lacey. IGNITE trails are brought to you by Sony Music and hosted by the National Trust. The trail is created by Culture Creative. Tickets: Advanced from... Adult £15, Child £10.00, Family £45 (2 adults & 2 children). Free entry for carers & children 2 & under. Parking is £7 per car & free for National Trust members. HOME WANTED! Barnaby

Barnaby is a lovely gentle male, black (with white flecks) approximately 3 years old. He came into care as he was living as a stray and despite all attempts, we were unable to locate his owners. Barnaby is very vocal, loves his food and is currently learning how to play and be brushed. He is now ready to find his forever home. Barnaby is looking for a home with a safe garden for him to explore but as his temperament with children, other cats or dogs is unknown he would better suit an adult only home or home with older children and no other pets. A home in/near KT5,6,9, KT17-23, SM7 and RH3-5 preferred.

If you think you may be able to offer Barnaby his forever home, please get in touch on 0345 260 1387 or adoption@epsom.cats.org.uk Epsom Ewell & District Branch http://www.epsom.cats.org.uk If you cannot adopt a cat but would still like to help us please go to https://www.justgiving.com/EpsomCats-Protection

As we have around 7,000 cats and kittens in our care at any one time, we will find you the perfect feline friend. www.cats.org.uk Reg Charity 203644 (England and Wales) and SC037711 (Scotland) In line with Cats Protection guidelines, we are only homing cats in the local areas of: KT5,6,9, KT17-23, SM7 and RH3-5

My name is Lance, I am 9 years old, and I have Down's syndrome. I want to tell you about my most favourite thing ever, horse riding! Mummy took me to our local Riding for the Disabled centre when I was three years old, after my physiotherapist mentioned to her that it would be good for my core strength. Everyone thought it would take me a while to get used to the ponies but we made friends as soon as I met them. I was smitten! Thursday was my favourite day of the week because me and my best friend Ella got to take a field trip from school and go riding. I am very sad at the moment, I haven’t been allowed to ride since the beginning of last year, and Mummy can’t tell me when I can go back. The pandemic meant the RDA had to close, because the volunteers need to help riders like me, get on and off the ponies, and walk alongside us in case we wobble a bit. Mummy says the RDA lost their home, this made me even sadder, and that is why I have written this letter. Horsley, Bookham and Leatherhead RDA need your help. They have raised funds to start building a new, fully accessible riding centre at Badgers Farm in Effingham, but they need a bit more money to add the roof, so Ella, myself and all the other riders can start to ride again. I really miss seeing the ponies, and getting to ride, if you are able to support the charity by making a donation to their ‘Raise the Roof’ campaign please visit:

https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/raise-the-roof-for-hblrda lots of love

Lance (and Ella too!)

Horsley Bookham and Leatherhead riding for the disabled is a 100% volunteer led and funded local charity. Our new centre will allow us to more than double our rider numbers, allowing more children with disabilities, the opportunity to build muscle tone, co-ordination, balance as well as social skills, delivering a feeling of independence, a sense of achievement and greater self- confidence. RDA believes it’s what you can do that counts, please help us Raise the Roof to get Lance, Ella and other local children who have disabilities back in the saddle after what has been an incredibly tough year.

THE MEETING PLACE We are excited to have recently appointed Anne Milton Worsell as Anna Chaplain to work with people of no faith, other faiths as well as those with a Christian faith. She will seek to support and travel alongside older people offering them spiritual care that each individual values. We all have a spiritual side, those aspects of life which give us meaning, value and worth as to how we see the world and how we want to live in the world. The Meeting Place’s ANNA CHAPLAINCY is supported by the Bookham churches and will seek to support the very oldest and frailest in our community - those who might be living in care homes or their own home perhaps with a care package and who have been cut off from relationships in the community.

Anne will work alongside carers, families, professionals and other volunteers to offer spiritual support for those facing challenges in their lives due to living with physical difficulties and dementia. Our TELEPHONE BEFRIENDING scheme will be working alongside the Anna Chaplain. To find out more about the scheme do contact us through our website. For more info on all areas of our outreach see our website or facebook page.

With most refreshment areas selling out and stalls doing good business we may even have made some money to help with the running of the Old Barn Hall.” With no parade of small children in themed costumes starting the day as usual, a children’s fancy dress competition with a nursery rhymes theme was held, with a good turn-out of all ages. “Congratulations to all who took part in the fancy dress and to the winners of m theptrophies 4 ot 21-dLucie leiF Merkin, & llaHMia nraMair B dand lO her spider, Siennasand Oliver emFreddie aG sllBerrett, atS syWilliam alpsiDandsd naB Marsh. The Rotary Club Of Bookham & Horsely

WORLD POLIO DAY 24th October 2021

Rotary does many things to help local communities but one of the initiatives that is probably least known is the one we are most proud of - the fight to eradicate polio from the planet. For most of the UK population under the age of 60, polio probably seems like one of those diseases that was wiped out many years ago, but the older people amongst us can still remember being at school in the 50s and 60s with children who had contracted polio and whose lives had changed for ever.

40 Looklocal Magazine - October 2021

Thanks to the introduction of the Salk vaccine and a policy of mass vaccination, polio was gradually eliminated in the western hemisphere but was still prevalent in other parts of the world. In 1979 Rotary began its fight against the disease by helping vaccinate 6 million children in the Philippines. In 1988 Rotary and the World Health Organisation launched the Global Polio Eradication initiative. At that time, it was estimated that there were 350,000 cases each year in 125 countries. By the year 2000 a record 550 million children had received the vaccine and the Western Pacific region spanning Australia to China was declared polio-free. In 2003 Rotary’s contribution to polio eradication exceeded US$500 million and only six countries remained polio-endemic - Afghanistan, Egypt, India, Niger, Nigeria and Pakistan. So, where are we today? We have helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries. We have reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent worldwide and we won’t stop until we end the disease for good. Last year Afghanistan and Pakistan were the only countries where the disease was still classified as endemic. How you can help - support your local Rotary Club in its fundraising efforts and/or donate direct at www.endpolio.org/donate - thanks to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation your contribution will be tripled.

Bookham Help Your Neighbour Scheme The Bookham Help your Neighbour Scheme restarted its service on 1st August 2021 following its suspension due to the Covid 19 pandemic. We provide transport to local medical facilities for elderly and vulnerable residents of Bookham, when no other means of transport are available to them. As a result of the pandemic, we regret that we must introduce some constraints on the service we offer : • Please give 5 working days’ notice if possible & we will not be able to accept requests closer than 2 working days beforehand. • Clients must have had 2 Covid vaccinations, wear a mask & be able to get in & out of a vehicle unaided. • We can no longer accommodate walking frames or wheelchairs. • We regret that we are now unable to accompany a client into a medical facility so they will be set down at the door & collected afterwards. This means that they must be able to reach their clinic unaided & be able to contact their driver for collection using their own mobile phone or by requesting that staff make a call for them.

Could you help?

Help Your Neighbour is operated by volunteers who either man our mobile phone one morning a month or drive our clients to their appointments. They give as much or as little time as they choose and are not tied to any regular commitment. We urgently need more volunteers to make the scheme a success.

If you feel you would like to spare a little time to help please ring

Blue Hearts in Bookham’s Heart

Have you noticed some beautifully-decorated Blue Hearts sprouting right in the centre of Bookham in the Lower Shott/ Grove Corner area? Most of these have been hand-painted by Angela Jones to highlight areas reserved for wild flowers. Once again we have seen a lot of orchids there this year. The area just east from the pedestrian lights at the top of the High Street contains a lovely mosaic of flowers and shrubs planted and maintained by Frances Fancourt and her helpers. Frances is our local tree warden and this is another ‘branch’ (sorry!) of her activities! She is also responsible for the stunning display of wild flowers outside the telephone exchange in Church Road. In previous times this area was ‘maintained’ by the use of weedkiller but Frances persuaded them to ‘see the light’ and everyone is delighted with the result! Have you also seen that some mini-hearts have appeared, Banksy-like, on the ugly wooden fence surrounding the electricity sub-station at Lower Shott? We have been given permission by MVDC to enhance the beauty and wildlife-friendliness of this eyesore by growing a hedge of Pyracantha up it which the blue heart team will maintain. This will provide a colourful feast of flowers for the

42 Looklocal Magazine - October 2021

bees and berries and nesting sites for the birds. Beautiful wild flowers such as Cranesbill, Devils Bit Scabious, Ox Eye Daisies and Birds Foot Trefoil are popping up nearby and we intend to enhance this further next year with some judicious planting and seeding. The rest of the area will be mown as usual by MVDC. We’ve been delighted to be joined on this project by over 60 residents who have put out Blue Hearts on their own verges and gardens this year, some displaying their own beautiful artwork. By the time you read this, all the Blue Heart verges should have been mown, cleared and put to bed, ready for the flowers to spring up again next year, hopefully even better than in 2021! If you have any other ideas for ugly buildings or sites which could be enhanced by wild flower planting, please email us on bookhambluehearts@ gmail.com. You can also like our Facebook page @bookhambluehearts. Finally, we were the lead feature in the August issue of Surrey Life magazine - now there’s posh! Thank you to everyone who has helped us with our project over the last year. The bees, butterflies and other wildlife send their thanks too! Article and Photos by Steve Poole

Alongside this, we fight for people’s rights to live well and receive high quality care, and invest in research that will change lives now and in the future. Until we beat dementia once and for all, we are determined that everyone impacted by this cruel condition will have the support they need and deserve. www.alzheimers.org.uk

Mid Surrey Dementia Care Trust runs a relaxed and friendly social club for people with memory difficulties or in the early stages of living with dementia. A member’s time at the club also provides a period of respite to a carer from the demanding responsibilities of caring. Book Reviews OCTOBER 2021 ‘You Will Never Be Forgotten by Mary South’ (Hardback £14.99) I loved the imagination, insight and pitch-black humour in these short stories. Mary South plays with the possible roles of technology in our future, the emotional and very human challenges of trying to augment our lives in new ways. I loved the way she mingles the real and already-present influence of technology, from telephones to brain surgery, with situations yet to be experienced. Can our slowly evolved minds keep up with these radical leaps into the future? ‘The Outlaw Ocean’ by Ian Urbina (Paperback £9.99) This is a riveting tour of the hidden crimes and dramas on the world’s oceans. Ian Urbina spent five years, including three at sea, investigating the stories of trafficking, exploitation, illegal fishing, and many other dangerous games being played out on the open seas. He travels to nations and within organisations trying to redress the damage being done, from tiny countries like Palau fighting against illegal shark fin fishing in their territory, Sea Shepherd’s high-risk, high-speed chases in Antarctic waters, and those trying to rescue the many people trapped into slavery. A fascinating, important and astonishing book. ‘Flavour’ by Yotam Ottolengi (Hardback £27.00) Yotam is back with ‘Flavour’, solely dedicated to vegetables. ‘Flavour’ takes Ottolenghis’s trademark style of vegetable cooking to the next level and dives into flavour combinations that let individual ingredients shine and enhance one another. The book is broken down into three sections, Process, Pairing and Produce. It is easy to follow and the results are amazing whether you consider yourself a good chef or a good family cook. Flavour is also beautiful, from the cover to all the sumptuous glossy photos of the recipes. A fantastic gift to treat yourself, or as a sumptuous gift for someone at Christmas.

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

A HAPPY PARTNERSHIP

Around autumn 2003, a certain free magazine started appearing in letterboxes throughout the Leatherhead district and beyond every month. The Ashtead & Leatherhead Local went to addresses in those areas plus Fetcham, while Look Local circulated in Bookham, Cobham, Esher and Weybridge. With separate editors, Zen George in Ashtead and Ros Redfern in Bookham, they ran as completely different businesses. However, the areas were so close and shared so many contributors and advertisers that the two quickly established some ground rules and worked fairly closely together. For many years, Leatherhead historian Goff Powell provided a monthly potted histories page for Zen George’s magazine and these are now all archived Goff Powell on the L&DLHS website. When Zen decided to move away from the area, she asked Ros if she was interested in adding the Ashtead & Leatherhead Local to her own family of Local magazines. With negotiations completed, the production process for all editions was extended smoothly. After Goff’s death in 2018, his role was picked up by L&DLHS Newsletter Editor Tony Matthews

and the two Local editions covering the Leatherhead district now both contain regular contributions from the Society, helping to keep the L&DLHS and Leatherhead Museum in the public eye. Articles have covered everything from Museum exhibitions and newly published local history books to the Society’s regular lectures, both those at the Letherhead Institute and after the advent of lockdowns, on Zoom too. Readers have learned of Bamber Gascoigne’s talk on West Horsley Place, Mark Davison on metal detecting, and Lucy Quinnell on the archaeology of Rowhurst, the Fire & Iron Gallery. Other speakers have covered historical utilities at Polesden Lacey, the contrasting owners of what is now the Beaverbrook Hotel, London’s secret gardens, hedgerows in the landscape, the emergence of spas for bathing, forensic studies of crime scenes, the follies of historical fashions, spies in Surrey, and even the adolescent pen pal of Donald Trump’s Scottish mother! There have been many more and the list goes on. The Local series has twice won awards for innovation and excellence as Community Magazine of the Year and Lifestyle Magazine of the Year. Editor Ros and her three- strong team all grew up and attended schools locally, living most of their lives in this part of Surrey and the magazines obviously benefit from their local knowledge. There are no plans to expand further as the existing family keeps them more than busy. Ros summarised: ‘We very much enjoy our collaboration with the Leatherhead History Society, long may it last.’ For more information go to Tony Matthews www.leatherheadhistory.org.

Wifi solutions- getting covered The requirements to have better coverage for your Wifi appear to be increasing daily, especially with more devices requiring internet connection than ever before. Yes, this could be upstairs in the kids bedrooms, in the study or in the new garden office. There is a product which is low in cost, simple to install, works brilliantly and offers some really useful features-which really makes you ask “Why did I not do this before?” The specific product I am referring to is the TP Link Deco E4 - 3 pack and costs just £150.00 As its name implies, the kit consists of 3 units (transmitters), one unit plugs into your router with the other two units linking between themselves. Usually they are positioned in areas near where you have signal weaknesses. The system uses “MESH” technology and, in short, this means that as you move between different areas the transmitters cover, the transmitter with the stronger signal will take your connection to ensure you always have the strongest and most resilient connection. This also means you have the same wifi network covering the whole property, making the connection of devices much simpler. We have sold many of these units and have been impressed with how simple they are to setup by many, non technical home users. Usually they are up and running within 10 minutes. We best recommend the use of the free smart phone/tablet app, which helps you setup the units quickly, and offers many useful facilities like “bedtime” mode, which turns the Wifi off at predetermined times and days of the week. You also can setup different Wifi active times for different devices. For example: your 10 year old child can only have wifi access until 7pm, whereas your 16 year old child’s device can have access until 10pm. With some of the apps you can also “content control”. This can block access to unsuitable websites from specific devices by category, such as “adult content”, or “firearms content”. You also can specify specific websites you may want to block by typing in the website address.

Know your stuff….. Recently, we have been reporting on the number and type of scams at the moment. We feel a large part of the scammers success is that they catch you when you are least expecting their call, and logic and reason just go straight out of the window. For example, a common scam is where they call supposedly being BT, and saying your Broadband is reporting problems. They obviously use BT as they are the UK’s largest Broadband provider, but if you are with Virgin Media or Talk Talk or Tec Res, why would BT be calling you to discuss the service they do not provide? The simple answer is they wouldn’t be! We urge you to always be vigilant and sceptical on these calls. Do not enter into a detailed conversation with the caller. Stop the call by hanging up and don’t use your phone for 5 minutes (as this will terminate their call). Should you have any concerns, independently find the phone number of the firm in question, and call them yourself-it is very rare that these “big” firms will be calling you.

challenge of becoming Wild Surrey Photographer or Artist of the Year 2022. Sophie Coad, events manager at Surrey Wildlife Trust, said: ‘The eternal beauty and power of nature has always been so inspiring to artists. During lockdown, we have become closer and more connected to nature through our daily walks, appreciating its value to our mental and physical health. Art has played a similar role for many, so I cannot think of a better way to deepen our connection with nature through the using our creativity and inspire others to take positive action to help the climate and ecological crises we are facing. This is the perfect opportunity to express your feelings for nature by creating powerful images of a future where people and nature live in harmony.’ The closing date for entries is 1st March 2022. Tesla MODEL 3 CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

If you never ever again wanted to queue up for a filler at a petrol station I have the answer. It comes in the attractive shape of the updated Model 3 Tesla, a real treat and a bargain if ever there was one. It is not the widest known motor on the UK scene but that does not prevent it being not only a bargain buy but a joy to have on your driveway and to carry you in comfort and safety on the most arduous of journeys. It is Tesla’s smaller, simpler and most affordable car - their valiant and shrewd hit on the hotly contested range of cars, the world’s first mass market electric vehicle and, to my mind, a winner. The Model-3 is fully electric. As you kip peacefully and dream of getting value for your lolly the five-seater can be charged overnight and greet you all ready to go after breakfast with a range of 300-plus miles on its all-wheel drive facility. Car comfort zones, with money saving attributes, do not come any better than this little beauty designed and delivered from its California birthplace at your behest. Tesla reckon it is their best car yet - and I fully endorse their belief. It enjoys an impressive range of qualities making it safe, fast and as techuically advanced and cheaper than, say, the renowned Audi 4. And when you are on the road it is dead simple to plug in to a handy facility en route - at just about every

52 Looklocal Magazine - October 2021

petrol station or with a visit to Tesla’s far reaching charging network. And it may all be achieved in just three minutes. Whoopee! So what else eases your needs? The car’s 15inch touchscreen offers integrated media updates, communications, cabin control plus spot-on vehicle data, all in one interface. Anything more? No kidding! Every Tesla 3 serves you with auto-pilot advanced safety and all-round enhanced visibility. Little wonder this treasure of transport was awarded a 5-star Europe safety rating. For misers like me it is something like seven times less expensive to run that a petrol powered rival - and requires less maintenance due to its cleverly and astutely reduced reliance on mechanical complexities. Not only that with its welcome zero emmisions it benefits the environment. Performance? Not too bad... its rear engine will hurry you and four passengers from 0-60mph in around 3.1 seconds on its all-wheel drive - its reckoned it will set you back around £28-a-month. Little wonder it was the first electric car to top a million units globally a couple of months ago. And, I have no doubt, it will keep up the pace and fully please its buyers. There can be fewer deserving causes...I’d have one.

Mike Bessent

Crime Reduction Advisor & Designing Out Crime Officer NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION

This month, I was trying to think of what to write about in terms of crime prevention and then decided to share with you some news about a colleague who many residents of Mole Valley will remember very well. My colleague, Mike Bessent, sadly died on the 11th June from a brain tumour which was only diagnosed last December. Mike underwent extensive treatments to try to halt the progress of the cancer but, tragically, this was not successful and he died peacefully at home with his wife and family by his side. My reason for mentioning Mike is that, for many years, he was the Crime Reduction Advisor for Mole Valley and was my predecessor in the role that I currently hold. I had known Mike for several years before moving into the field of crime prevention myself and, in many ways, he was my mentor, support, guide and valued friend. Mike was a long-serving police officer who recognised the vital importance of crime prevention as part of an officer’s role. He trained in his specialist field and developed his knowledge and experience through the years to offer his expert advice to so many people. Like me, he visited victims of burglary, advised residents about home and property security, carried out security reviews of locations and business premises and advised on planning applications in terms of trying to “design out” the opportunity for crime. Mike had a natural ability to come up with practical and imaginative solutions to problems and was an enthusiastic champion of neighbourhood policing

58 Looklocal Magazine - October 2021

and problem solving involving the actual community in the decision making process. In recent years, Mike had moved over to Elmbridge to carry out this role over there but we were in very regular contact with each other, often several times a week, and his advice was always so helpful. I just felt that there are some people in the community you would want to know this news. Mike will be very sorely missed by all his colleagues but also by the wider community he served loyally for so many years. Here are a just a few of the crime reduction tips that Mike taught me: 1. Use timers to bring on lights in a staggered pattern to give the impression that your home is occupied and people are moving about. 2. Remove obvious climbing aids, such as wheelie bins, which could help a burglar to climb to the back of your house - the most popular point of entry for a burglar. 3. Never leave window and door keys in locks, as they are very attractive as a method of entry to a would-be burglar. 4. Consider using some dusk-till-dawn lighting outside your home to remove areas of shadow and to enhance the impression of occupancy. 5. If you have an intruder alarm, please use it and, if not, consider getting one as they are known to be a very strong deterrent against burglary. All common sense and very practical ideas that I have used when giving advice over the years. Thanks, Mike!!

EASTWICK ROAD CHURCH Throughout the Summer Eastwick Road Church has been under renovation. Our roof which was nearly 100 years old was due some much needed attention. Last, but by no means least, sadly we say farewell to our Minister Reverend Ted Bellingham. For the past three years which have included the unexpected challenges of Covid, Ted has guided our church, supported by his wife Jane, who has also played an important part in church life. We give our grateful thanks for his devotion to Eastwick Road Church, his exceptional care to those who are part of the church family, his work in the wider community and the church’s role in that for the future. They will both be much missed.
