THE HERBERT PROTOCOL Safe & Found
Imagine the situation. Your loved one, who has dementia, is missing. The police are in your home asking for personal details which, because you are sick with worry, you are finding hard to provide. Of course, they need to know your loved one’s name, height, any distinguishing marks, what they were wearing, mobile phone number, medication and the type of dementia they have. Also, if they have any money or a travelpass and, if they drive, the type of vehicle, registration number and colour. If they usually go for a daily walk the police need to know where they would normally go and, if they have gone missing before, where they were found. All this when the only thing you want is for your loved one to be found safe and well. Well help is at hand in the form of The Herbert Protocol. This initiative is named after George Herbert, who served in the Second World War and who was a veteran of the Normandy Landings. He lived with dementia
and would repeatedly be reported missing from his care home whilst trying to return to his previous home. Surrey Police and its partners are part of the national Herbert Protocol initiative which is a risk reduction tool for people living with dementia who may be reported missing from home. The form has been designed to provide the police with as much information as possible, including a photograph, so they can start a search immediately. Most importantly it avoids putting families through the stress of having to answer questions from the police at an incredibly distressing and worrying time. The form can be downloaded from the Surrey Police website at www.surrey.police.uk/contact-us/herbertprotocol-missing-person-form/ and should be updated regularly and kept in a safe place. The police will only ask for the form if a person is reported missing but you will have peace of mind that, should the unthinkable happen, you are prepared. Annabelle Yeomans.

POEM CORNER Holiday At Audrey’s Chailly, nr Montreux. July 1990 “It’s awfully hot - or is it me? Where’s the loo? I need ice tea!” Your “house guest” has left behind Certain phrases that spring to mind Plus memories of stoning plums And puzzling over conversion sums, Of aching limbs and blisters sore From evening swims and walks galore, Of noisy redstarts feeding young Waking before the day’s begun, Thirsty plants to be kept alive, Picking parsley and pinching chives, Trips to Villars, mini hikes, Brushes with those mountain bikes, Frantic efforts - “I must look smart” For a certain party that failed to start. Trips to Nestle - once in shorts With panic change so thoughts Of those in corridors of power Could concentrate for another hour! Some memories are bound to pass But certain ones I know will last:Of mountain views that combine Such peace and beauty that time Stood still and I gasped in pain As tears in my eyes I gazed again. Memories of evenings spent Over lazy suppers in quiet content, Of friendship, laughter and serious chat, Of looking forward and looking back. You made me feel so welcome-a big mistake For I fell in love with your mountains and lake, And have this urge to come again Just to make sure the view’s the same. So thank you for everything, Audrey dear, I’ll be back, if invited, another year!

RAY PRICHARD (1944 - 2019) It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of a popular and well-known Bookham resident, Ray Pritchard. Ray has been a stalwart on the BRA Committee for a number of years and in particular has been part of the Membership and Publicity Team, with the role of providing regular BRA contributions to Bookham Bulletin and Look Local each month. He was also the Woodlands Road BRA Road Steward and an active member of Woodlands Road Residents Association. Originally from South East London, Ray worked in the music publishing industry for most of his career and moved to Little Bookham with his late wife Kathy many years ago. In addition to working in the music industry, with a love of opera, he was a keen performer and sang in local choirs. His other main love was cricket and Ray has long been associated with Effingham Cricket Club and has been President of the club since 2015. He also loved to play and was a very good wicket keeper. Through these interests Ray had a large number of friends and much enjoyed being involved with village life. Nothing was too much trouble for Ray and he was always pleased to help in the any way he could and was happy to take the initiative when needed. We in the BRA and particularly the Publicity and Membership team will miss Ray greatly. Les Huett Publicity - Bookhams Residents’ Association.

LITTER PICKERS ...TURN WEEDERS
On Sunday 7th July instead of Litter Picking volunteers attacked the overgrown vegetation and weeds that have been spoiling the look of the High Street. “It was a very productive morning” said organiser Margaret Lawson “with our team of seventeen volunteers getting stuck in the High Street looks at lot better”. We hope that now the weeds have been cleared local business take the initiative and look after the areas in front of their shops and businesses Weeds outside your home? Why not spend a few
minutes clearing the path and gutter and keep our village tidy. And it is not just weeding the BRA organises. It also provides and maintains the hanging baskets as well and makes the High Street that bit more welcoming. There are a number of ways to improve the diversity of bird species visiting your garden: Increase the number of bird feeders with a variety of seeds and nuts. Keep topped up and clean regularly to stop diseases spreading. If you want a better look at the birds, install a bird feeder with a roof. This will help them feel safe from predators like sparrowhawks and they’ll spend longer on the feeder, providing great photo opportunities. Niger seeds will attract Goldfinches, Siskins and Redpolls. Sunflower seeds are a favourite of tits and Greenfinches while mixed seed will attract species like buntings and finches which feed on split grain when fields are left fallow. A fresh coconut half is great for Long-tailed tits and Starlings. Try leaving seed heads on a few flowers and herbs in the Autumn. Add bird baths or water features, even a pond with a shallow area, so your visitors have somewhere to bathe and drink. Remember to change water and clean bird baths regularly. Include some spiny and berry producing trees like Hawthorn, Blackthorn, or Pyracanthus as a standalone tree or part of a border or hedge. Mixed native hedges are a wonderful addition for food sources and safe places to nest. For more information on attracting wildlife and to see our gardens visit

HOME WANTED! Socks
Socks is a handsome Ginger/White 5 year old, neutered boy who sadly has had to come into care. He was being beaten up by the cat next door to where he lived so he took it upon himself to move to a very large Garden Centre in the country. Obviously this situation could not go on so he had to leave his wide open spaces and come to Cats Protection in order to be cared for properly and to find a new home. Socks is a very friendly and sociable cat who loves his food, and he would love nothing more than to be 'out and about’ again. He would love a large, safe garden and a family that have experience of owning a cat. If you feel you could give this lovely handsome boy his forever home please call Sue on 020 8390 3165. Epsom Ewell & District Branch http://www.epsom.cats.org.uk If you cannot adopt a cat but would still like to help us please go to https://www.justgiving.com/Epsom-CatsProtection
As we have around 7,000 cats and kittens in our care at any one time, we will find you the perfect feline friend. www.cats.org.uk Reg Charity 203644 (England and Wales) and SC037711 (Scotland)

Bookham Wine Club
heralds another successful & enjoyable year for its members... 2019 has seen new members joining an already established membership to learn more about wine, and enjoy exceptional wines from around the world. Our monthly meetings are relaxed and friendly, and members enjoy informative presentations, accompanied by typically six wines, along with well-paired nibbles. In July, wine educator Deborah Zbinden presented wines from California; while in August, Nina Cerullo, a specialist in Italian wines, introduced wines from Campania, a region of Italy with some of the most interesting white wines; and also the great red grape Aglianico - little known outside Italy, but with a growing reputation. On September 9th, Marta Vine makes a welcome return. Marta is a specialist importer of Portuguese wines and is passionate about the quality and diversity of her wines crafted by lesser known and well established producers; examples of which will accompany her presentation.
The Club’s successful year continues through the autumn and winter - with plans already in place for the 2020 programme, with many of our excellent wine educators, specialists and presenters returning to entertain us. If you would like to attend one of our monthly tastings, or would like further information, please visit our website: www.bookhamwineclub.org.uk or contact: membership@bookhamwineclub.org.uk. LOCAL AUTHOR DELVES INTO SURREY’S MILITARY HISTORY
Since moving to Surrey in 2006, Paul Le Messurier has developed a keen interest in the local and military history of the surrounding area and the county of Surrey. After a career in business, he has now turned his attention to research and writing and has produced several articles on local history including a series on the Home Front during World War 2. Located immediately to the south of London, between the capital and the English Channel, Surrey has long played a significant part in the defence of the nation. During the Civil War, Surrey was firmly on the side of the Parliamentarians. From their base in Farnham Castle, they controlled the vital Chilworth Gunpowder Mills, near Guildford. The threat to the country during the French Revolution and Napoleonic wars led to the construction of a line of semaphore signalling stations through Surrey to provide a fast communication link between London and Portsmouth. The line was replaced in 1822 by semaphore towers, some still existing today. In the late 19th century a 72-mile ring of fortified positions was established from Guildford through Surrey towards Kent and Essex, known as the London Defence Positions. In World War 1 The Queen's Royal West Surrey and the East Surrey Regiment lost over 13,000 men between them. On the first day of the battle of the
36 Looklocal Magazine - September 2019
Somme troops from the 8th Battalion East Surrey Regiment were waiting for the signal to go over the top. To encourage his men, Captain W.P. ‘Billie’ Nevill provided them with footballs which they kicked as they made their way across no-man’s land. Captain Nevill was killed but his men went on to capture the enemy trenches. During World War 2 Surrey was home to several RAF fighter squadrons. Due to its proximity to London, Surrey residents were to suffer at the hands of the German Luftwaffe during the blitz. Parts of Surrey, together with Kent and Sussex, became known as ‘Bomb Alley’, with Croydon suffering more damage than any other district during Hitler’s flying bomb campaign. “Surrey’s Military History” is a fascinating window into Surrey’s military history. It gives a terrific insight into the events, people and places that are Surrey’s Military Heritage. A thoroughly good read. £14.99, www.amberley-books.com

HOWARD BADMINTON CLUB IS PROUD
TO BE CELEBRATING ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR. In May the club held a Celebration Dinner at Tyrrells Wood Golf Club. We were delighted to welcome our President and founding Chairman Peter Turner, as well as many past and present members. Fifty years ago, Badminton was played with wooden rackets and was not yet an Olympic Sport. Today Badminton is one of the most popular sports in the UK - ranked 4th after Football, Cricket and Rugby. Badminton is a great way of keeping fit. According to the British Heart Foundation: It’s an easy but effective way to stay active A 50-year-old weighing 70kg can burn 385 calories during an hour of social badminton.

Such was the demand for these evening classes at The Howard of Effingham School, that a limit of two years tuition was imposed on those attending. In response to this, the Howard Badminton Club was formed in 1969, to cater for those wanting to continue playing and develop their skills. As demand grew, new sections to the club were added, playing in mainly single court venues in and around Leatherhead. In the 1990s, the club consolidated all of its sections and moved to the newly built sports hall at Downsend School.
It keeps hearts happy Regular play is great for keeping hearts healthy, conditioning and strengthening the heart muscle, reducing hypertension and limiting the risk of blood vessels clogging.
The club now We play on Wednesday nights, throughout the year, on four courts, at the excellent sports hall at St Teresa’s school in Effingham. The club is a friendly, mixed ability group, playing with feather shuttles. We like to play competitively as well as socially. We are currently recruiting new members and will be pleased to welcome players who may be interested in joining the club. We offer a free Badminton session, followed by pay as you play evenings, so you can be sure the club is right for you, before committing to full membership.
A brief history of the club Back in the 1960’s, there was a huge interest in badminton locally, driven in large part by adult education classes.

Business Grade Support for Home and Small Businesses users
For several years we have been providing a very effective support solution tailored specifically for the home and small business users. In short we provide the Industry leading Internet security software (Webroot), automatic data backup to our secure cloud, unlimited telephone and remote fault resolution, free workshop engineering labour, and assistance on “how can I do this” on most main stream applications for PC’s, Laptops and Apple Mac computers and notebooks. We call this solution Total Care, as that is what it does - provide Total Care. For an annual cost of £150.00 including VAT, we look after all your IT needs (for one device). I have listed some Typical issues we have dealt with recently: o During the last month we have saved a business user who had their laptop stolen, we were able to get them back and operational in a day, having restored all their user data from our cloud, we changed all their passwords ensuring the old laptop couldn’t be accessed o We have cleansed countless machines- usually where software has accidently been down loaded o We have given hundreds of machines Healthchecks to ensure they are running as quickly and as efficiently as possible o We have upgraded many machines with Solid State Hard drives, for a significant performance boost o Passwords have proven to be a major problem for many customers and we have recovered many accounts where the password was unknown or had become locked out or inactive o Our engineers have ensured that customers machines are working efficiently and have not been compromised following a range of scam calls from “Microsoft” and/or “BT/Talktalk” o Wireless networking problems have been resolved remotely when the printer can no longer be accessed o Windows 10 has been upgraded on some machines where previously Windows 7 was installed to overcome the forthcoming issue of Windows 7 going “End of Life” next year Whilst most of our issues are dealt with via remote connection or over the phone taking less than 10 minutes to resolve, we also have issues which take much longer, maybe where all the software is corrupted and needs to be rebuilt, this can take hours for our engineers to complete, but you are not charged any extra for the time we spend. We have no limit on how many times you can call us, although some customers do adopt a sheepish “err…hello it’s me again” attitude as they feel slightly embarrassed about the number of calls they make! By having Total Care, we also offer a best endeavour’s tablet and smart phone resolution service and assistance Free.

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
Retrospective Exhibition Of The Work Of Leatherhead Artist Anthony Hill
Anthony Hill with his depiction of the church fire.
The works of Anthony Hill, the local artist who devoted his retirement and talent to raising funds for local causes, are currently being celebrated in the first major exhibition at Leatherhead Museum since its refurbishment earlier this year. Anthony, who died in 1997, and his wife Helena, held regular exhibitions of his paintings which were very popular in the local community. Many people have lent their paintings to the Museum for the exhibition. Based at the 17th century Hampton Cottage in Church Street, the exhibition opened on Saturday, 20 July and runs until the end of Heritage Week on 22 September. As an architect, Anthony had an eye for the beauty of buildings. Many of his paintings feature them in all sizes from his garden shed upwards! He preferred the small and vernacular to grand buildings and also painted many landscapes. His line drawings feature familiar local landmarks including Leatherhead Parish Church, Sweech Line drawing of Hampton Cottage House on Gravel Hill, the White House in Church Road, and of course Hampton Cottage itself. As well as his architectural career, Anthony’s life included war service in the Royal

Navy and 17 years as an Anglican priest. The exhibition includes examples of his maritime work as well as both urban and rural settings from different parts of the country. He was churchwarden in Leatherhead in 1989, at the time of the fire which nearly destroyed the parish church. He was among the first people on the scene and one HMS Malaya in 1943. of the paintings in this exhibition shows the fire as he first saw it in the north transept. It has pride of place in the church vestry. His architectural expertise was invaluable in the subsequent repair and restoration. Watercolour of Leatherhead Bridge
Leatherhead Museum is run entirely by L&DLHS volunteers and is open free of charge to the public on Thursdays and Fridays from 1pm to 4pm and Saturdays from 10am to 4pm. For Heritage Week it is also open on Sunday 22 September from 10am to 4pm. For more information email museum@leatherheadhistory.org or go to www.leatherheadhistory.org.
F IAT 50 0 CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY
Let me start with a question. How many Fiat 500s do you see, even on the shortest of journeys? More than one I would wager. Little wonder, because this wee treat has become a mega seller, a prized possession in the hotly contested city car market. Just like yonks ago, when the Volkswagen Beetle & the Mini jostled in truly vast numbers on roads of all types, bustling city highways & byways & remote village lanes giving both pleasure and economic relief. The same goes now for the Fiat 500. I am not the least bit surprised because, truth to tell, it is honest value for money, as appealing as can be, and bursting with the feel good factor; a loveable little looker. That is why I bought one & I am still running my shiny little black beauty after two years. Penny pincher that I am & a leggy six footer, the car more than adequately satisfies both my spendthrift attitude & my comfort levels for my daily demands.
And when weekends tempt Trophy Wife Delia & me to a seaside escape we have as much space in the boot as we need for our comfies & the tightest of promenade parking has never, ever been a problem. The vast worldly sales have left broad grins on the faces of the money men at Fiat’s Italian HQ - and they are figures that also give joy to the planners & design engineers whose genius richly deserves world admiration - and envy, among rival city car builders. The offbeat, funky & utterly desirable retro-looking petite 500 is now an established icon - I cannot envisage the slightest change in that situation for a really wholesome while to come. It revels in a choice of good, effective & efficient engines, the all round visibility is perfect & without hindrance, and the cabin comfort zone is as good as it can be, not so much for four, as for two people.Though the family weenies will be comfy enough in the back seats. Okay, okay, it is not a racer & won’t be a challenger to the Ferraris at the traffic lights change - but is quick enough to get you into the melee without getting in anybody’s way. Again, for tight wads, it’s residuals are high and if & when you decide to sell - maybe to buy another one you won’t lose too much lolly from your original forkout. And what’s more tempting than that? Specifications: Engines, three petrol, one diesel.Seven trim levels. Warranty three years/ 60,000 miles Prices £12,00-£23,380. We will be bringing you a selection of music from across the borough, all interlinked with music and chat from Brookland Radio who will be broadcasting live from the food festival. 5. Sample culinary delights from at least three stall holders When there is so much on offer, it’s difficult to choose just one type of food to try so why bother, try lots, in fact we challenge you to try at least three different types of food. We will have food from around the globe on offer, so you will be spoiled for choice. 6. Grab a drink from The Big Red Bus What’s better than sitting on a picnic blanket with a drink from the Big Red Bus and chatting with friends while you enjoy some fantastic food and music? 7.Come and say hello to the ‘My Elmbridge’ team who will there The council’s ‘My Elmbridge’ team will be on hand to answers any queries you have about the festival and about council services. Maybe you would like to work at the council or volunteer at one of the countryside conservation events, whatever your query they will be around to help you. Gardening Matters AUTUMN PLANTING
Blimey, September already. I hope you’ve had a fab summer. Let’s look at some autumn planting so that your garden doesn’t look sad and neglected come October. There are a lot of late-flowering Group 3 clematis varieties. These often have large flowers and can all be pruned to the ground in February. Some will have seed heads, some will be scented, but they all need to be planted deep. C. rehderiana has delicate pale creamylemon, fragrant, tubular flowers and is very vigorous. Starts in August at the earliest. C. ‘Huldine’ has white flowers with a touch of pink bloom at the edge. Very vigorous, ideal for archways. C. flammula has cream, almond-scented flowers and needs shelter. Anemone japonica - Japanese anemone - can be invasive but is very easy to pull up. It has white and pinky-mauve flowers, with vigorous branching. Needs full light, and humus-rich, well-drained soil. Propagate by division in spring, or sow the seed as soon as it ripens. Aster - Michaelmas daisy - a good old faithful which will spread quite considerably over the years. Buy mildew-resistant varieties - A. novi-belgii and A.novaeangliae are good ones - and don’t plant it by a house wall, as it will be too damp and therefore conducive to mildew. Needs fertile, well-drained soil, moist in summer, and will tolerate sun or shade. Take softwood

cuttings in spring or divide in spring or autumn. Echinacea purpurea - coneflower - a herbaceous perennial, where the bulk of the flower is a cone with the petals folded down. It has a vivid pink flower, dark purply-green foliage, white stem and will start flowering in August. The white variety is more tender. Needs full sun, humus-rich, well-drained, moisture-retentive soil and will benefit from an annual feed. Propagate by division in spring when the centre of the clump is dead or when there’s a gap in the middle with a ring of growth round the outside. Throw away the centre, divide and replant. Feed and mulch. Sedum - ice plant - a very hardy perennial succulent, a clump-forming ground cover plant in yellows (noooooo), pinks and reds. Very tolerant of most conditions but prefers fertile, well-drained soil. Plant in full sun and feed in late spring. Propagate by cuttings from a non-flowering shoot - very easy. Tricyrtis - toad lily - a rhizomous perennial with an open, delicate flower which will cope with a lot of shade. Plant in humus-rich, moist soil and propagate by division in spring/by seed in autumn. Finally, two delicate ones. Schizostylis coccinea - kaffir lily - a delicate bulb in pinks and reds, and liriope muscari - autumn-flowering grape hyacinth - will provide welcome colour at the front of border.

Crime Reduction NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION
September brings changes for many of us. Returning to work after a much needed holiday, going back to work or school; or even starting at a new school or college for the first time. This can be a very stressful time, when normal routines are disrupted and new routines have to be established. What has any of this got to do with crime reduction? It’s a fair question. The point is that it’s very easy to get caught up in all these changes and to forget the simple precautions that you would normally take to safeguard your possessions and property. It’s easy to forget to secure windows and doors when leaving the house in a hurry. Remembering to lock your car when it is parked and taking all items of value with you! All of these are things that you have probably got into the habit of doing automatically but it is easy to be distracted when there are so many other things on your mind at the time. It only takes a simple lapse to give a perfect opportunity for someone to take advantage and to gain entry to your home or your vehicle and to make off with things that are really important to you. During the summer months, many of us will have been gardening on a regular basis. Sometimes, it was tempting to leave equipment, such as mowers and garden tools out, rather than locking them away. We always receive a significant increase in reported thefts of quite valuable garden equipment over the sumer months, often from their being left out or being put away in insecure sheds. This remains a problem at this time of year. It’s also worth noting that would-be
56 Looklocal Magazine - September 2019
burglars will often make use of your tools, ladders etc to gain entry to your home. Many of you will also be doing last minute shopping before returning to work or school. Please keep your purses and wallets safe when you are out and about. It is easy to be distracted and it only takes seconds for an “expert” to deprive you of your cash, credit cards, driving licence and, if they are all together in a bag, your car keys and other personal possessions. Think of the inconvenience and unfortunate consequences of this happening to you! Always keep your handbag, purse or wallet close to you and never leave your bags unattended when you are out shopping. Also, be aware of who is around you when you are using cash points outside banks and ATMs. Quite a few people are tricked into being distracted by someone when withdrawing cash. Sometimes, you will have been seen entering your security code and then the card is taken while you are distracted and it can then be used to withdraw cash or pay for items using your account. Always make sure that no one is watching when you are entering your PIN code and do not respond to anyone approaching you while you are doing this. If they are genuine, then they will be happy to wait a few seconds while you complete your transaction. None of this advice is meant to cause anyone undue concern. It is just a reminder to do everything possible to avoid the additional stress of having to deal with a theft or burglary, when there is plenty already going on in your lives to keep you busy.
