From the Editor Welcome to Look Local in June

I hope you are all well and enjoying the summery days (summeryish days!) I expect the gardeners amongst us have been busy since I last wrote. If my grass is anything to go by, there seem to be perfect growing conditions at the moment! We have a lovely month ahead in Cobham, with some fabulous local events to attend. There will be a ‘Picnic in the Park’ to celebrate the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth, which should be a lovely family event, so please do come along. There are more details on page 12. Let’s hope the sun shines ! Not one, but two competitions this month within our pages: a family ticket for entry into Painshill Park, which can be used over the summer months, and also some tickets for a Home Building and Renovating Show which is being held at Sandown Park in June. This sounds like a wonderful event if you’re involved in a relevant project. Details within. I look forward to receiving your entries and good luck to all! Finally, there will be a Summer Fete and Fun Dog Show at Cobham Village Hall at the end of June which sounds like a fun day out too!. Hope to see you there, details can be found on page 46.

See what’s on in and around Cobham in June

Have a great month, Cobham!

ASK BRUCE: WHY DOES MY DOG ROLL IN FOX POO? One of the most frequent questions we get asked here at Bruce’s Doggy Day Care is ‘why does my dog love to roll in fox poo?’ And this month, reader and editor Ros Thomas asked just that. The answer is simple and comes from the canine inbred instinct to hunt. To do this successfully, it helps if they disguise their own scent, so rolling in the muck of their prey makes them smell like them and they can creep up undetected. Our modern-day domesticated dogs are very clean. This means they smell of us and our homes, easy for wild animals such as foxes to recognise and run away from. To stop your dog rolling, you must train it to understand this is unwanted behaviour, using a training aid such as discs or voice commands. My own labrador tries to roll in fox poo when we’re out walking, and as soon as she drops her shoulder to roll, I sternly say no and she stops before rolling. You can then issue a doggy treat so their good behaviour is rewarded. This should help break the fox poo game cycle! To get rid of the vile smell of fox poo, there are special shampoos out there, but one of the best solutions I’ve heard on the doggy grapevine is tomato ketchup. Apparently, the vinegar neutralises it! Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Cobham. Do you have any dog training or canine behavioural questions which you would like to ask Bruce? Send your questions to :-

ros@looklocalmagazine.co.uk

Then check out this column each month for Bruce’s answers.

The Essential Guide to Your Prep School Journey (Head Teacher in Your Pocket) by Merinda D’Aprano, (Paperback £10) This book is a pleasure to read and a valuable guide for parents. It is written by Merinda D’Aprano, the headteacher of Notre Dame in Cobham, with contributions from parenting specialist Elizabeth O’Shea. It offers a balanced view of education, an insight into how schools work, and practical ways to communicate well with children of all ages. The book explores the challenges school can bring, while offering parents simple strategies for coping with difficult situations and turning them into opportunities for learning. It aims to support parents in helping their child balance confidence, independence, cooperation and enjoyment throughout their education and beyond. Ideal summer reading to prepare for a new school year. High-Rise by J. G. Ballard (Paperback £8.99) The thousand apartments of a forty-storey apartment block are now full. Two thousand residents form bonds and exclusions at decadent parties; Dr Robert Laing of the 25th floor plays squash with Anthony Royal, the building’s architect who occupies the 40th floor penthouse. Behind the social veneers and privileges of high-rise life, chaos looms. Soon, the separate floors and elevators, the swimming pools and garbage chutes become focal points for increasingly aggressive outbursts. Class snobbery mutates into gang loyalty and violence reigns at night. The residents dig in deeper, unleashing their desires. As the hightech props of civilization begin to fall, the residents prepare for a dark and dirty war within their walls. Ballard creates a sense of mounting malevolence and reckless destruction in this gripping novel. The film directed by Ben Wheatley is released on DVD in July. The North Water by Ian MgGuire (Hardback £14.99) A 19th century whaling ship, The Volunteer, sets sail with a killer aboard. The harpooner Henry Drax exists in a world of violence and perversity where murder happens on a whim. Patrick Sumner, a former army surgeon, is a faint ray of grace and humanity in this grippingly horrific tale set in the freezing Arctic Circle. This is a fantastic read which makes The Revenant look like a walk in the park.

GARDENING M AT T E R S

Hopefully by now, the weather has bucked up and the sun is warm. Difficult to imagine as I write this at the end of April, when the rain/hail is bucketing and it’s freeeeeezing. Anyway, here we go with the Latin words indicating plant direction ... The overall appearance or character of a plant is dictated by the way its branches or stems grow, and such factors could be very important when choosing a plant. In some cases, it could be the habit of the whole plant that influences its name, and in others, it may be only a part of it. A plant with upright stems will contain the word erectus/erecta somewhere in its name: for example, Tagetes erecta, the African marigold of the summer border, a reliable little plant which lasts for ages, and Populus tremula ‘Erecta’, a vigorous upright form of the aspen. A quite different feel will be anything with the word pendulus/pendula in its name. The branches of these plants will have a weeping or pendulous habit, such as Betula pendula, the weeping birch whose arching branches droop to the ground, Prunus pendula, a beautiful weeping cherry whose leaves turn orange and red in autumn, and Fagus sylvatica ‘Pendula’, the weeping beech. Many other terms will also be similar to English and therefore easy to learn. Just remember the outstanding characteristic of the plant and Bob’s your uncle. So, if the direction is upwards – a pretty obvious direction for a plant to grow, in my view – you will see the term verticalis, as in Smilax verticalis, a damage-tolerant plant of the tropics and sub-tropics, whereas if the plant has

a spreading habit, either sideways or horizontally, the name will contain....yes, horizontalis, such as Cotoneaster horizontalis, probably the best-known of the cotoneasters, with its glossy red berries and spreading sprays of foliage, or Juniperus horizontalis ‘Wiltonii’, a very widespreading evergreen juniper with blue-grey foliage. Then there’s ascendens, another name with a meaning that’s straightforward to grasp. An example of this is Prunus pendula var. ascendens ‘Rosea’, an ornamental flowering cherry with ascending branches, rather than weeping. And then there’s radiatus, meaning ‘radiating outwards’, such as Hibiscus radiatus and Asparagus radiatus. Many plants are more laid back in appearance: they may be decumbens, lying or growing on the ground but with rising tips, as in Cistus x dansereaui ‘Decumbens’, a lowgrowing evergreen rock rose, or declinatus, downward curving, such as Cotoneaster declinatus, or reflexus/reflexa, bent back: for example, Syringa reflexa, the nodding lilac, and Dracaena reflexa ‘Variegata’, a variegated dracaena with reflexed green leaves, margined in white. Or they could be patens, meaning spreading, such as Salvia patens, a herbaceous perennial sage whose blue flowers form a large open cluster or Agapanthus campanulatus subsp. patens, the spreading bell agapanthus. And so we come to the end of another little article. See you again next month, and here’s to summer (hopefully)

THE STORY OF PAINSHILL 35 YEARS TO CREATE AND 35 YEARS TO RESTORE

This year, Painshill Park Trust celebrates its 35th anniversary and the magnificent transformation of one of Surrey’s most important 18th century landscape gardens. Everything you see today at Painshill has been completely restored. Painshill is a magnificent 18th century landscape garden in Cobham which was created in the naturalistic style from 1738-1773 by the Hon. Charles Hamilton. Hamilton was educated at Westminster and Oxford, and like most gentlemen of this period, he went on several Grand Tours of Europe. He arrived at Painshill, fresh from 2 years spent in Rome, with a vision for a new type of garden with extraordinary views and fewer formal planting schemes. Over a 35 year period, Hamilton designed gardens at Painshill that were among the earliest to reflect a trend away from geometric formality to a wilder, naturalistic style. He did so by planting well-established and newlyintroduced and rare species, many from North America, and combined classical follies as emblems in a picturesque landscape. Hamilton changed the face of the English landscape forever. Sadly, due to lack of funds, he sold up and left Painshill in 1773. Over time, and several

owners later, Painshill gradually slipped into decay and became derelict. THE FORGOTTEN GARDEN Hamilton’s creation may never have been rediscovered if not for a small group of local residents who formed The Friends of Painshill. This group, along with the Garden History Society, began their campaign to rescue the garden. By the mid-70s, the tragic story of the derelict 18th century landscape garden began to attract national attention, and in 1981, the Painshill Park Trust was set up to restore this forgotten garden to its former glory. PAINSHILL TODAY Thanks to a lot of hard work from a dedicated team of staff, volunteers and generous donors, Painshill is now well on the way to full restoration. Most of the follies in the Grade I listed landscape have been rebuilt or restored, including the award-winning crystal grotto, which is once again a sparkling centrepiece. The landscape has been cleared and replanted with thousands of new trees and shrubs. Only plants which would have been available to Hamilton during his time at Painshill have been used to bring the past alive for a new audience.

Windows 10 is soon to be celebrating its 1st birthday: as of April 2016, there have been around 290 million activations, which is pretty impressive. On 29th July 2016, Microsoft will be withdrawing its free upgrade offer, and from here onwards, the upgrade will be charged for. Looking into the future, Microsoft will no longer bring out new editions (ie Windows 11) of the software, simply product enhancements. So, if you wish to keep yourself up to date, take the upgrade now whilst its free. Before doing so, it is worthwhile checking with the publishers of any software you use to ensure it is compatible. The same is applicable for your peripherals. Should you be apprehensive about upgrading, we can do it for you too.

LOW COST

P R I N T I N G We have often talked about the ongoing love/hate relationships we have with inkjet printers, their running costs versus their purchase prices. Yes, it is possible to buy a great wireless printer/copier/ scanner for £50.00, but if you use it extensively, you will find it very costly in the long term, due to the cost and capacity of the inkjet cartridges. As a rule of thumb, we say if you are replacing your cartridges more frequently than once every two months, you have the wrong machine and it will be costing you too much to run. We are pleased to inform you that Epson, the world’s largest inkjet printer manufacturer, has been listening and has a very viable solution for you, called the Ecotank. The Ecotank system is a printer, available in a few models, all with a very large ink cartridge

capacity - in fact, enough ink for 4000 mono pages and 6500 colour pages, with the cost of replacement ink cartridges less than £10... yes, that’s right, £10.00 for 6500 pages. It is a real bargain.

It was great to meet up recently with my old pal, Leslie Charles, the Grammy award-winner with worldwide sales of over 30 million, best known to the world as Billy Ocean. Back in the day when we were both ‘Kids’, we were based in Radio Luxembourg’s London office in Mayfair, which served as our home-from-home when not in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. I would be upstairs, pre-recording interviews etc. while Billy was situated in the basement with his piano, upon which he wrote songs for other people. He became the ‘house’ songwriter on behalf of Radio Luxembourg’s publishing division. We kept in touch through the years and it was wonderful to see him looking so happy and healthy, and, after all these years, enjoying the fruits of his past songwriting talents which eventually paid big dividends for him, with massive global hits such as ‘When The Going Gets Tough’, ‘Caribbean Queen’, ‘Red Light Spells Danger’ ‘Get Outta My Dreams’ and ‘Love Really Hurts Without You’. His new record company has just issued a double disc set, entitled ‘Here You Are + The Best of ’, which features one CD with all his past chart triumphs and the other disc with his cover versions of the brilliant music that inspired him, from artists such as Sam Cooke, Frank Sinatra, Bob Marley and many more. He said “It just seemed to fit perfectly... the songs that made me into the singer I became and where these songs took me to. Hence, Here You Are.” He’s also currently on a big successful UK tour, where he is having a lot of fun. Touring is important to Billy, as it’s not just about promoting his new release, but also provides him with a chance to employ an entourage who owe their livelihood to him. As Billy told me, ‘it’s a big responsibility when taking people on, and I do my best for them, as they are part of my team and rely on me”. Billy is one of the nicest people in pop and it’s lovely when good things happen to good people. His new collection of songs is available to order on Amazon and iTunes.

M U S T A N G CAR REVIEW

TED MACAULEY TEST DRIVES THE NEW SIXTH GENERATION MUSTANG

A

decade or three ago maybe four - soccer legend Sir Bobby Charlton, to this day still one of my best friends, was gifted a sponsored Ford Mustang. Jaguar E-type owner me then, a racer in my wildest dreams, revelled in the speed Bobby hated, except when he was bursting clear of the midfield to score for Manchester United or England. So occasionally, he preferred to let me drive the American flyer, especially on the narrow and treacherously twisty roads from Manchester to his holiday home in Anglesey, off North Wales. That is still a joy of a memory, now revitalised by Ford’s revelation of their sixth-generation pony-badged Mustang, a real beauty. We motor reviewers were treated to its debut at the New York Motor Show with their gimmick of ultra-gimmicks, a replay of their publicity stunt of 1964, when a Mustang was unveiled on Floor 86 of the Empire State Building. I must say, staged as an eye-catcher of quality, the high-level launch was a needless attention-grabber to what

40 Looklocal Magazine - June 2016

I firmly forecast will be a winner on its own merits and looks. And I shall be very, very surprised if the orders are not quickly placed with the nearest Ford dealer as an outcome of genuine appreciation and promise that this stunner will be the best Ford has ever produced. In fact, it comes in two forms, both equally desirable: as a convertible with a fabric hood that folds away in seven seconds, and as a fastback to rival any challenger currently on the market, price and performance-wise. Over the past half-century, the Mustang has topped the six millions sales figure. Okay, iconic as it may be, it has not always hit the high spots of satisfaction, but this bigger, but lighter, brasher belter, fast and fun, looks to me like a surefire success, though it still, as ever, fails to hit the highest spots cabin-wise, and its suspension is floatier than we Brits are used to. But the brakes are real confidenceboosting grippers. The interior is unmistakably Stars and Stripes...hard plastic everywhere and bum-numbing seats. But the engine sound feedback

has the throaty gruffness of growling movie star Lee Marvin. Just to explode a widely-held myth that it is a car specifically targeting American wallets, Ford is making a breakthrough to grab a wider market with a right-hand drive version. Already, since its release in the UK a few months back, it has reaped nearly 4,000 orders. And the waiting list is swelling. If Trophy Wife would let me - but I have already been downed with a stern NO! - I’d give serious thought to swopping our Porsche Cayman for this iconic bargain buy, Ford’s new kid on the cylnder block, especially the topof-the-range Coyote. I wonder if Sir Bobby will be offered the latest model. If so, I’m on standby to resume my chauffering talents. Specification: Three engines 2.3, 3.7 V6 and 5-0 V8 all with eco-boost. Gears six-speed manual with paddle shifters or automatic. Performance V8 GT: top speed around 155mph. 0-62 in 4.8 secs. Fuel: 20.9 mpg. Price £34,995.

Divest Surrey Transition Cobham is supporting Divest Surrey, a campaign in the early stages of encouraging Surrey County Council (SCC) to divest their Surrey Pension Fund (SPF) investments in fossil fuel companies. making Cobham healthier, Divestment is the action or process of selling off business happier and more resilient interests or investments. The SPF currently has total invested assets of around £2.8bn and of that figure, around £176m is directly and indirectly invested in the fossil fuel industry. Last year the UK’s Environment Agency Pension Fund (EAPF) committed to divest 90% of its coal assets and 50% of its oil and gas stocks by 2020. Values of oil and gas companies worldwide have fallen recently, with one influential index (the Standard & Poors Energy 500) dropping 18.75% in the 12 months to March 2016. There is the environmental case to answer but pension funds like SPF that fail to follow the EAPF and others to divest in a timely manner may find themselves with ‘stranded assets’.
