TUMBLEWEED…

CLOCKTOWER Financial Planning

AS WE ENTER THE NEW TAX-YEAR, I HAD PLANNED TO START A SERIES OF ARTICLES ABOUT PENSIONS, BUT THEN… We’ve all experienced that ‘Tumbleweed moment’… a moment we’d love to take back. Something said inadvertently, indiscretion about a friend, perhaps. A comment made too loudly just as the room goes quiet, then awkward realisation. The ‘size of the tumbleweed’ - how long it takes to recover - depends on the scale of the ‘faux pas’. But this doesn’t just happen to individuals; not just ‘normal people’ swear in front of the vicar (metaphorically, of course); history is littered with corporate blunders catastrophically changing the foratunes of businesses large and small. Probably the most (in)famous of these was just over 30 years ago on 23 April 1991, at a significant business Convention, with the theme ‘Quality, Choice & Prosperity’. Ratners was founded in 1949, then during 1980s CEO Gerald Ratner expanded it from 130 stores to 2,500. Despite the UK recession in 1990/91, Ratners was doing well. But his biggest influence on the business was Ratner’s speech at the Institute of Directors Annual Convention (to Royalty, Directors, businesspeople and journalists) stating the reason one of his products was so cheap was “it’s total crap”, then noting a prawn sandwich would likely last longer than the company’s 99p earrings. The media loved it, customers (and markets) were less keen. Consumers avoided Ratners stores; Ratners market value fell by £500 million. 300 stores closed; Ratner resigned in November 1992 and the group name changed to Signet in September. This all created the the expression “doing a Ratner”.

Talking of rebranding, after a 2017 merger between Standard Life and Aberdeen Asset Management, ‘Standard Life Aberdeen’ has just announced a name change to Abrdn, (pronounced Aberdeen). According to The Chief Executive “Our new brand Abrdn builds on our heritage and is modern, dynamic and, most importantly, engaging for all of our client and customer channels, a highly-differentiated brand that will create unity across the business”. “Our new name reflects the clarity of focus that the leadership team are bringing to the business...” Rebranding will progress through 2021, with a ‘full stakeholder engagement plan’ during transition. After the company issued clarification on how to pronounce the new ‘brand’, response from the financial services community has been ‘varied’: “Standard Life Aberdeen needed to sort out its branding, but the new Abrdn name will likely leave investors feeling dazed and confused”. “Investors need simple fund names … recognisable amongst the thousands of investments out there, having a brand name you can actually say, even if it’s only in your head, is a big help” “A full stakeholder engagement plan is promised and don’t be surprised if stakeholders ask for some vowels please, Carol.” Tumbleweed anyone? Meanwhile, a competitor confirmed it will buy the Standard Life brand.

As we step slowly towards summer and slowly out of lockdown, we’ve experienced a mixed bag of weather this Spring haven’t we! Snow, wind, rain, frost and beautifully sunny days too! Let’s hope that June brings us some settled sunny days! My tomato plants, lettuces, radishes, sweet peas and nasturtiums are now planted in the big outdoors and I’m looking forward to enjoying the ‘fruits of my labours’ in a few months time. If the weather obliges I’m sure the barbecue season will be a busy one this year; it will be so good to get together with friends and family that we have not seen for some time! And with Father’s Day on Sunday 20th June I’m very sure many will enjoy some family time then. Finally things are really starting to feel normal again, not quite back to how they were, but certainly on the way! I moved house in early 2020 and most of my friends and family haven’t been able to visited yet, so it will be lovely to welcome them soon! Given the relaxation of more lockdown rules, we are happy to include a selection of local events this month. It’s obviously been a difficult time to plan events, so it will take a little while still for groups and organisations to provide details of more, but we will do out best to keep you informed over the coming months! Slow but sure... Wishing you all a happy & healthy month ahead, Until next time,

Ros

Duck Feed Available at the reopened Princess Alice Hospice Shop With lock-down easing, we are delighted that the Princess Alice Hospice Trust shop (PAH) has reopened in Cobham and has restocked on healthy, nutritious duck feed for our feathered friends at Riverhill. Be minded that, as recommended by the Canal & River Trust amongst others, a balanced diet as provided by the duck feed supplied by the Cobham Conservation and Heritage Trust and sold by the PAH, is better for the ducks and better for the Eco System of Riverhill. Also bear in mind that the packaging is compostable and recyclable and, like all other litter, should be taken home and recycled or composted responsibly.

This month Buy to Let Hunter are chatting to Melinda who lives abroad and so can’t be here in person to act for herself: What were you hoping to achieve? Melinda explains that asking Buy To Let Hunter to manage her flat in Richmond as a short term serviced accommodation makes sense whilst she is spending time abroad. “I wanted to keep my flat, to maintain a toe hold in London, but it was a purely commercial decision to sweat my assets whilst I choose to live somewhere else.” She explains that she didn’t think too much about traditional pensions during her working life; instead, she mostly invested in properties in the 80s and 90s where she could afford them and by default she now relies on that rental income in her retirement. BTLH can help you find the perfect pad to set up as a serviced apartment, too.

Why did you choose BTLH? Melinda explained “The onset of Covid caused a dearth of options in the lettings market. The world has changed in rental terms.” Melinda spoke to the agents who used to handle her property and found their model no longer really fit for purpose, for her anyway. “I needed shorter lets so I can come and go from time to time.“The BTLH model is flexible and more cost effective for her needs: “The old agents were proposing a 25% charge on any rental income and then a range of expenses that add up to £500-£600 for every letting!” They were billing her for inventory and administrative costs which seemed to be in addition to the fees she was already paying. Advertising feature

“It’s one thing if you are having lets of a year or more, but it really didn’t make sense for the shorter term serviced accommodation model that I needed.” She explained. Melinda was also unsure about the due diligence when the agents took references for her tenants as they always seemed to be outsourced – “BTLH have a much more personal and less algorithmic approach!” she laughed – ah yes, I smiled, the advantage of having a very small office!

So, Melinda, what has your experience been working with BTLH? “It’s been very good!” she explained from Switzerland where she was locked down up a mountain. A lot of her girlfriends who got in to “buy to let” are local so don’t need to rely as heavily on management as Melinda does. “I can trust you to make the right decisions and it helps finance my lifestyle whilst retaining flexibility. I feel the security of knowing I have a bolt hole but can’t afford to just leave the asset standing.” Fancy a bit of a nomad retirement like Melinda? HAMPTON COURT PALACE GARDEN FESTIVAL

Highlights Announced for the return of the UK’s Biggest Garden Festival

The Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival supported by Viking will be back to transform the grounds of Hampton Court Palace from 5 - 11 July. Following the resurgence in gardening across the nation in 2020, the UK’s biggest festival of flowers will focus on gardening for everyone and celebrate all things ‘grow your own’ as the nation welcomes back outdoor events. After the huge increase in people growing their own produce, 2021’s Festival will introduce the RHS Allotment area providing tips, advice and information on all things ‘grow your own’. Festival-goers will be able to attend talks and practical demonstrations throughout the week and get growing inspiration from allotment plots built by community groups and grow your own experts. The festival continues to highlight key issues and environmental challenges within the Global Impact Gardens category. Global Garden - Game Over? by designer William Butterworth will raise awareness of climate change, featuring charred trees, burnt ground and interactive stepping stones as it hopes to inspire visitors to take action. Meanwhile Tracy Foster will focus on issues of plastic pollution in our gardens,

canals and rivers, depicting a large floating bottle with plants to represent the species used to make natural alternatives to plastic. The Floral Marquee supported by St. James’s Place Wealth Management will be brimming with plants from nurseries from all over the UK with an array of species and cultivars, including first time exhibitors Alchemy Ferns and Kells Bay House and Garden. Hardy’s Cottage Garden Plants who have exhibited at every RHS Hampton Court since its very first show will take centre stage as Master Grower and visitors can immerse themselves in some of the finest roses in the Festival of Roses. Rebecca Welti, RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival Manager, says: “We are thrilled to be able to bring the festival back to the grounds of Hampton Court Palace. It is the garden festival for everyone; it provides so much inspiration for avid and new gardeners alike with lots of exciting displays and plenty to get involved in, all within the beautiful setting of the palace.” For further information on the gardens and exhibitors or to buy tickets, please visit the RHS website at www.rhs.org.uk/hamptoncourt.

Problems logging in to email? We have recently seen an increase in problems relating to email account passwords not being accepted when using many of the major email programs and apps like Outlook, MacMail, Android Mail to name but a few. There is a simple explanation for this, which has been very poorly communicated, and the reason is that these providers, namely Yahoo, Sky and AOL have introduced another level of security which will generate a random once used password for you to use in conjunction with that specific mail program or app. To get the App Password you have to login to your email webmail account, in this example I will use a Yahoo account. Go to your Yahoo webmail page and login, then go to the Account page, then Settings, then Account Security. Scroll down the page and you will see “Generate App Password”, select the App you wish to use your Yahoo account with, then press the “Generate” button and this will create your one time use password. Take this password and use this temporarily generated password as being your password with the program you wish to use. Now isn’t that simple!! Should you have a problem following these steps please do drop into the store and we can help you there.

Security- Keeping you safe Last month we looked at keeping your Operating System up to date. Assuming you are now fully protected there, our next step is to ensure your applications are not the weak link which is letting your security down. As a guide Microsoft usually provide their Office suite of software with a ten year life cycle which means Office 2010 will go (went) end of life in 2020. Similarly their Office 2013 will go end of life on 2023, and so on. Microsoft are trying to force every user onto the annual subscription product now, and Microsoft have said that the next release of Office (Office 2022) will be their last non-subscription version, although as this will take you through to 2032, there is a good future in the product. What will happen if you continue to use an end of life application like Office 2010? The product will still work, your data will still be accessible. Microsoft will not issue any Bug or Security Fixes, increasing the danger of being attacked by malicious thirdparties, with these risks remaining indefinitely. Finally, as your product presents a security risk, there is a probability that you may be blocked from sharing your documents with any other collaborators, as you could pose a risk to their security too. What can you do to become secure? Your options are limited, but essentially you will need to upgrade to an in-support product- be this the subscription or perpetual version. We are happy to advise further.

ONE SMALL STEP FOR GARDENERS IS ONE GIANT LEAP FOR wildlife! Frances Tophill, BBC Gardener’s World presenter, supports Surrey Wildlife Trust’s new wildlife gardening survey Bug hotel - Surrey Wildlife Trust

Frances Tophill author and BBC Gardener’s World presenter is supporting Surrey Wildlife Trust’s new online wildlife garden survey. Anyone can take the survey, from complete beginners to advanced gardeners, and in just a few minutes find out how their garden scores for wildlife. The quick and easy online survey measures gardens on five essential features: food, shelter, water, connectivity between gardens and natural solutions. The survey shows that every type of gardener, from those with small gardens to large, can take simple steps to help restore wildlife in their street. Frances Tophill said: “The survey shows just how easy it is to encourage more wild & wonderful creatures into gardens. If we step back & do a little bit less in our gardens, we can do so much more for declining insects & wildlife. Less mowing. Less weeding & more thought about how our gardens connect to the wider landscape. It’s that easy to help wildlife thrive.” Surrey Wildlife Trust’s number one tip is to just add water to your garden. Then leave a patch of your garden to grow wild with weeds and long grass. Taking part in #NoMowMay is one of the best things gardeners can do to help wildlife flourish. Give the lawn mower a rest for a month and the longer grass will soon become a rich habitat for insects and spiders which the birds will love too, hopping around to find tasty insect snacks.

26 Looklocal Magazine - June 2021

Claire Gibbs, award winning principal ecologist at Surrey Wildlife Trust and judge for Gardener’s World Garden of the Year Awards for 2021, said: “New this year in the survey is a whole section on connectivity, focusing on the importance of wildlife being able to move around both within your garden & using neighbouring gardens as stepping stones to travel down entire streets. “Creating street wide wildlife groups to encourage wildlife gardening & maybe some wildflower sowing on road verges is fun & builds a great community spirit. Everyone will enjoy the beautiful array of flowers & even more importantly it will enable wildlife to move & thrive.” The Surrey Wildlife Trust wildlife gardening survey can be shared on social media & WhatsApp groups to encourage famly, friends and neighbours to join in so they too can welcome more wildlife to their streets. Why not share seeds, cuttings, wildlife gardening tips or even create a wildlife gardening group in your street? Take the survey at www.surreywildlifetrust.org/ wildlife-gardening-survey and download your free beetle and action for insects guide. Surrey Wildlife Trust is offering an opportunity to find out more about wildlife gardening online, by email and also with a programme of free online talks on wildlife gardening from beginners to advanced gardeners. WE’RE BACK! Do come & join in this annual event where typically over 700 people enjoy going round the village, meeting friends and neighbours along the way.

BOOKHAM OPEN GARDENS DAY

Sunday 27th June, 10am – 5pm

This year we expect to feature around 15 varied and attractive private gardens and we have seven new ones to share with you. We will be joined once again by Little Bookham Allotments and The Grange’s Walled Garden. Find out more about individual gardens in the programme which will be available at our ticket outlets or can be downloaded from mid June from our website at www.bookhamopengardens.co.uk. As you walk between gardens, do look out for beautifully decorated Blue Hearts, indicating a road verge of lovely flowers to attract pollinators that are so important for biodiversity. Open Gardens Day raises money for the upkeep of our historic Old Barn Hall, and over the years we have raised over £65,000. We are planning to serve our normal delicious home-baked cakes, rolls and drinks throughout the day at the Hall but our exact offering will be decided nearer the time depending on restrictions in place at the time. Who knows, it might be refreshments al fresco. Plants should be available to buy at the Allotments, The Grange and some of the gardens. Tickets on sale from 15th June: £7 in advance from

the outlets below. Children u16 - free. Wheelchair users £5, carers free. Include admission to all gardens and a programme with details/map. Regret no dogs other than assistance dogs. Sorry no minibus service this year. • The Vineries Garden Centre, Lower Rd, Effingham (event sponsors) • Wishing Well, 7 High Street, Bookham • Bungalow Stores, Beckley Parade, Leatherhead Rd • Old Barn Hall office, Church Rd, KT23 3PQ. Tel: 01372 456307 (open Mon, Wed, Fri 9:30 - noon) • Outside The Crown on 19 & 26th June (9.30 – noon) On the day you can buy tickets (£8) at the Old Barn Hall or at the first garden you visit. We will have contactless payment available at the Old Barn Hall and for our team selling tickets outside The Crown. If you’re paying in cash, we’d appreciate if you can find the exact change, particularly at the individual gardens. Book Reviews JUNE 2021 ‘The Book of Trespass’ by Nick Hayes (Hardback £20.00) This is a work of art, a fascinating piece of history, a passionate call for social justice and it is also beautifully written. Walking, cycling, or floating downstream, Nick Hayes invites us to accompany him on illicit rambles into land that once was common ground; a place of free firewood, grazing, foraging and connection with nature. Along the way he explains how the people of Britain have found their circle of freedom shrinking, with pieces of land tucked into the pockets of the wealthy again and again over time. The consequences of this for the environment, for mental health and for our future are timely issues to explore. Hayes’ illustrations are worth lingering over, as are his ideas.

‘The Darkness’, ‘The Island’, and ‘The Mist’ by Ragnar Jonasson (Paperbacks £8.99) This fantastic trilogy is set in the streets of Reykjavik, the Icelandic highland and cold, isolated fjords. The events unravel in reverse, cleverly unfolding the crimes and tragedies that have formed Detective Inspector Hulda Hermannsdottir into the heroic person she has become. The Darkness. Hulda is being forced into early retirement at 64. Horrified at the prospect of the impending loneliness awaiting her, she takes on a cold case, a Russian woman seeking asylum on the cold and foreign shore of an unfamiliar country. Soon Hulda uncovers yet another death of a young Russian asylum seeker and her efforts to uncover a botched investigation will end in tragedy. The Island. Weaving together a year old crime with a present day locked room mystery, and the chance to spend more time with Hulda, the spirited and down to earth character of this trilogy makes this second book a real treat. Hulda is sent to the isolated island of Ellidaey to investigate a disappearance, and she discovers haunting similarities to an old case, the murder of a young woman ten years ago. Are these cases connected? Hulda is soon caught in a web of deceit, convinced everyone is lying. What secrets is the island hiding? The Mist In this third and final book Jonasson draws readers into the inner life of its endearing and compelling protagonist. We follow Hulda as she returns to work following a personal tragedy. She will face a disturbing and puzzling case. A mysterious death at a remote farmhouse in the Icelandic far north, where two bodies are found. The novel weaves together Hulda’s personal life with extended flashbacks at the farm in the leadup to our victim’s deaths. : 01932 862903 : info@cobhambooks.com : www.cobhambooks.com : 12A Anyards Rd, Cobham, KT11 2JZ

Mercedes Benz - S CLASS CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

Over decades I have revelled in the smart company, comfort and convenience of the Mercedes brand of memorable motors - and not for a single second have I endured the slightest setback in my admiration for the efforts of its gifted German engineers and designers. I have owned, borrowed, rented, been chauffeured, and tested, here and just about everywhere abroad, in all manner of conditions, both weather and road, and benefitted from every mile of my journeys. And that is why it would be seriously remiss of me now, not to cite the latest newcomer, as a thoroughly deserving prize winner... with the Mercedes Benz-S class awarded unique and universal recognition as the world’s number one luxury saloon. Motoring writers and experts from 28 countries who decide on the world’s finest car awards piled in to give it their full support in a hotly contested market. I was not invited to join in - do I hear your cry “Shame”?!! - but, I would have voted it a welldeserved winner too. It is the fourth, world luxury car triumph, for

34 Looklocal Magazine - June 2021

Mercedes-Benz and the second time the S-Class has clinched the title in the 17-year history of the prestigious and treasured annual car awards ceremony. The top three short listed cars, chosen from around the globe, were the Land Rover Defender and the Polestar 2, as well as the eventual and well deserved winner, Mercedes-S .... Little wonder the head of S-class and C-class development, Professor Uwe Ernstberger said proudly: “Our car offers trailblazing and innovative success in all areas from safety to sheer comfort and reliable efficiency”. I could not agree more.... So what do you get for your hard-earned? My choice is the stylish S350d L Grand Edition. It returns a respectable 44.1 mpg. It moves from standstill to 62 mph in about 8 seconds. Its handling is sharp with infotainment and sheer comfort aplenty. The asking price is £79,415 - but haggle hard and I would bet you could knock at least £10,000 off that? Go for it...
