Welcome to September

Welcome to our September issue of Look Local! I do hope you have all enjoyed a good summer and that you’re feeling refreshed and ready to step into the new autumn season… Here’s hoping for an ‘Indian Summer’ as the schools head back to start the new term and the more senior students head off to Uni or work experience, Gap Years or even new jobs! It’s always a time of year for new beginnings and I wish you all the very best with these new adventures, whatever they may be! There are lots of events to look forward to this month, including a fabulous Food Festival taking place at Painshill Park, which should make for a really nice day out. As well as this we hear from Cobham Chamber of Commerce about their Super Saturdays and details are also included regarding the ever popular Cobham Heritage Day which takes place this month. We are always happy to welcome new advertisers to our pages, and would love to hear from you if you would like to promote your business locally. We have been circulating Look Local in Cobham for over 14 years and as a result we are well known and well read each month. Why not give us a call or drop us an email to see how we can help your business? Wishing you all a great month, until next time,

COBHAM HERITAGE DAY Saturday 14th September 2019

Take a walk down town this 14th September for our annual village celebration known by all as Cobham Heritage Day. Allow yourself to fly away with our birds of prey display, gallop through the day on our pony rides, and admire the beautiful selection of cars at the classic vintage car show. Immerse yourself with your family and friends in fun filled activities with the return our yearly favourites - Juggling Jake, Punch and Judy, Maypole dancing and much, much more. With unlimited, quality entertainment for all ages, we will ensure that this will be a day to remember! 1...2...3... and they’re off, bobbing along the river and quacking their way to the finish, is this your lucky year to win our duck race? Or will you be hedging your bets on our tombola prizes? With so many competitions and games this year you are bound to win! The Cobham Garden Club is hosting a competition involving the

local Scouts group with special badges handed out for all participating children, as well as medals for the winners! Is all this excitement making you thirsty? Well we’ve decided to open two Pimms stalls this year, as well as feeding your appetite with a barbecue on the Leg O’Mutton run by Stoneleigh, Cobham’s family butchers. If this doesn’t already have you sold then head down to Church Street to taste the wonderful selection on offer, with more food stalls this year including Caribbean food, Paella and dessert stalls, all of which will be sure to make your head turn. Don’t let yourself miss out this 14th September! Be sure to save the date, and enjoy a guaranteed fun filled day for you, your friends and family! OCTAGON ANNOUNCE SPONSORSHIP OF

SURREY CRICKET ACADEMY

Surrey-based luxury housebuilder Octagon are proud to announce their sponsorship of Parkside Cricket Academy, a local cricket academy which seeks to develop sporting excellence amongst Surrey’s young cricket players. Established in September 2018, PCA has grown quickly, with over 200 students now attending group coaching and one-to-one sessions every week. PCA caters for all ages and ability levels; children as young as 2 have the opportunity to take part in Kiddy Crix, a course designed to help toddlers develop basic handeye coordination. Meanwhile the adults have “Dads in Pads”, a weekly session for parents, some of which haven’t picked up a bat for 20 years! With an ethos centred around “cricket for all”, PCA can prepare any child for a future at The Ashes! Based at Parkside School in Cobham, PCA draws students from across the county to train at their specialist facilities, inspiringly located within the shadow of Chelsea FC’s training ground. The coaches also visit local schools to help train new coaches and reach-out to new students, and a dedicated coach is helping to encourage more girls to pick up the sport. Tim Handel, Founder of Parkside Cricket Academy, comments: “We are hugely grateful to Octagon for their

sponsorship. Our academy has grown extraordinarily fast, fulfilling an immense appetite for cricket training in Surrey. We would not be able to maintain such a great service if it weren’t for the financial support of Octagon, and we hope that this great relationship continues for the foreseeable future.” Octagon’s sponsorship includes kits for the players, emblazoned with the housebuilder’s memorable logo, plus water bottles to keep players hydrated. The FREE Elmbridge Food Festival is coming to Painshill in Cobham on 21 and 22 September. This is your chance to experience the best culinary delights that Elmbridge has to offer. Our fabulous, free, funpacked, food festival is so fabulous that we have come up with at least seven reasons why you should attend. 1.Check out at least one demonstration at our demonstration theatre With at least eight demonstrations over two days, this one should be easy. The demo tent will have a schedule of demonstrations, include a display from Surrey Hills Butchers on how to cut and carve meat, as well as the best cuts of meat to buy for particular dishes. 2. Explore Painshill Whether you are new to Painshill or a regular visitor, there is always something wonderful to explore around these landscaped gardens. From the grotto to the lake to the views, take advantage of the free entry and explore Painshill. 3. Bring your kids to ‘Outside the Box’ If you have children, entertaining them will be key and we have that covered. Our Shout! Holiday activity squad will be on hand throughout the festival with a range of arts and craft activities including making dream-catchers and jeweller. We are also excited that local dance group ‘Outside the Box’, will be with us offering both dance and cheer-leading sessions to all the children.

4. Enjoy the music from our live stage Elmbridge has a vibrant music scene from our wonderful choirs to independent soloist and bands. We will be bringing you a selection of music from across the borough, all interlinked with music and chat from Brookland Radio who will be broadcasting live from the food festival. 5. Sample culinary delights from at least three stall holders When there is so much on offer, it’s difficult to choose just one type of food to try so why bother, try lots, in fact we challenge you to try at least three different types of food. We will have food from around the globe on offer, so you will be spoiled for choice. 6. Grab a drink from The Big Red Bus What’s better than sitting on a picnic blanket with a drink from the Big Red Bus and chatting with friends while you enjoy some fantastic food and music? 7.Come and say hello to the ‘My Elmbridge’ team who will there The council’s ‘My Elmbridge’ team will be on hand to answers any queries you have about the festival and about council services. Maybe you would like to work at the council or volunteer at one of the countryside conservation events, whatever your query they will be around to help you. We have no limit on how many times you can call us, although some customers do adopt a sheepish “err…hello it’s me again” attitude as they feel slightly embarrassed about the number of calls they make! By having Total Care, we also offer a best endeavour’s tablet and smart phone resolution service and assistance Free.

Book Reviews SEPTEMBER 2019 ‘Wakenhyrst’ by Michelle Paver (Hardback £14.99) In Edwardian Suffolk, Maud grows up in an isolated manor house at the edge of the Fens. Her autocratic father is steeped in the writings of a medieval female mystic while feigning disinterest in the discovery of a scene of the Judgement in the local church, recently cleansed of its whitewash. There is a devil in the corner of the painting whose presence is growing on his mind. As Maud begins to venture into the Fens, the secrets held there creep towards the house demanding a judgement of their own. Michelle Paver’s gift for conjuring a meeting place for folklore, guilt, and gradual revelation in powerfully eerie landscapes is a treat.

‘The Penguin Book of the Contemporary British Short Story’ edited by Philip Henscher (Paperback £9.99) Philip Henscher’s selection of the best British short stories of the past twenty years offers a masterclass in concentrated storytelling. Featuring thirty tales by writers including Kazuo Ishiguro, Ali Smith, David Szalay, Sarah Hall and Mark Haddon. this collection is one to savour and makes the perfect gift for fans of great fiction.

‘The Second Sleep’ by Robert Harris (Hardback £20) In the year 1468 Christopher Fairfax, a young priest, makes his way on horseback to a remote village in the ancient Wessex countryside. He has been sent by his Bishop to conduct the funeral service for the village’s old parish priest who is recently deceased. This was supposed to be a short assignment but instead changes his entire world. The elderly priest was seemingly obsessed with the past and collected the many artefacts which were strewn around the village and its surrounding lands. Christopher finds himself entangled with the mystery of the older man’s death with devastating consequences. All that he has studied, his faith, beliefs and understanding of history are challenged and irredeemably altered. : 01932 862903 : info@cobhambooks.com : www.cobhambooks.com : 12A Anyards Rd, Cobham, KT11 2JZ

Mark Bisson’s

George: The Cat Who Lost His Confidence

Following a conversation with his daughter Gemma, who was struggling to find a book to support conversations with her young son regarding a perceived loss of confidence, which his teacher had brought to her attention, executive coach and mentor, Mark Bisson, known to his grandchildren as Grandad Fox, set about finding a solution. Gemma was searching for a book which would act as a conversation starter but not a parenting book. This got Mark thinking about his role as an executive coach and the topics clients brought to coaching sessions, which were similar to the ones Gemma and her parent friends were discussing. Mark, who lives in Esher, is also an author. So he looked at how fables can be used to create new awareness and insight in a fun and creative way. And so “George -The Cat Who Lost His Confidence” was born. The book is based on George, a cat that Mark and his family had when they lived in Bookham. As is retold in the fable, George who was a very large cat, used to sit with the foxes in the bushes at the end of the garden and it seemed like he had become an honorary fox. George the cat and Grandad Fox offer a delightful, child-friendly introduction to the world of selfconfidence - and more importantly how to combat the

impact of negative comparisons by coaching your child to focus on their skills, talents and attributes. This enables them to gain new awareness and find their own solutions to the challenges they face. George is sad because he has lost his confidence and decides that he wants to be a fox instead. Grandad Fox helps George become aware of what he likes about himself. When Freddie the fox cub is drowning in the swimming pool, George needs to act quickly and show great courage in order to rescue him. Will George decide that he likes being himself after all? Mark uses his professional coaching expertise to help parents and carers support their children to think more clearly and guide them to organise their thoughts and feelings about the tricky topic of inner confidence.

COMPETITION TIME:

For a chance to win a copy of the book published on 28th August 2019 £16.99, answer the following question: What do Mark Bisson grandchildren call him? Email your answer & magazine area to ros@looklocalmagazine.co.uk, before 14/09/19.

COBHAM CEDAR CLUB W.I. From Anne Yeates

September Report It’s been a lively summer at Cobham Cedar Club WI. It all began with a pre-tournament tour of The All England Tennis Club, which was in a frenzy of preparation with three weeks to go before the start of the 2019 Wimbledon Championship. By the time it was all over, we learnt, almost 500,000 people would have been served 320,000 glasses of Pimms, 29,000 bottles of champagne and as many strawberries as Kent could provide. We went to Kent to a visit a castle by the seaside (fish and chips by the pier included), had a summer lunch, and learnt how to create lovely floral table centres with tuition from one of our members, an expert flower arranger. Some of us also went to Bournemouth for the National Federation of Women’s Institutes Annual Conference, where some 7000 women voted to launch campaigns to take action against declining bus services, and to promote the importance of women of all ages to attend smear tests. And now with autumn approaching (please, no one mention shopping days to Christmas) we’re back with our programme of information workshops, games afternoons, book club gatherings, outings and lunches, as well as our monthly meetings, beginning on September 12th with talks from Healthwatch Surrey and another on passengers on board the Titanic. Visitors are always welcome - see www.cobhamcedarclubwi.uk.

F IAT 500 CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

Let me start with a question. How many Fiat 500s do you see, even on the shortest of journeys? More than one I would wager. Little wonder, because this wee treat has become a mega seller, a prized possession in the hotly contested city car market. Just like yonks ago, when the Volkswagen Beetle & the Mini jostled in truly vast numbers on roads of all types, bustling city highways & byways & remote village lanes giving both pleasure and economic relief. The same goes now for the Fiat 500. I am not the least bit surprised because, truth to tell, it is honest value for money, as appealing as can be, and bursting with the feel good factor; a loveable little looker. That is why I bought one & I am still running my shiny little black beauty after two years. Penny pincher that I am & a leggy six footer, the car more than adequately satisfies both my spendthrift attitude & my comfort levels for my daily demands.

And when weekends tempt Trophy Wife Delia & me to a seaside escape we have as much space in the boot as we need for our comfies & the tightest of promenade parking has never, ever been a problem. The vast worldly sales have left broad grins on the faces of the money men at Fiat’s Italian HQ - and they are figures that also give joy to the planners & design engineers whose genius richly deserves world admiration - and envy, among rival city car builders. The offbeat, funky & utterly desirable retro-looking petite 500 is now an established icon - I cannot envisage the slightest change in that situation for a really wholesome while to come. It revels in a choice of good, effective & efficient engines, the all round visibility is perfect & without hindrance, and the cabin comfort zone is as good as it can be, not so much for four, as for two people.Though the family weenies will be comfy enough in the back seats. Okay, okay, it is not a racer & won’t be a challenger to the Ferraris at the traffic lights change - but is quick enough to get you into the melee without getting in anybody’s way. Again, for tight wads, it’s residuals are high and if & when you decide to sell - maybe to buy another one you won’t lose too much lolly from your original forkout. And what’s more tempting than that? Specifications: Engines, three petrol, one diesel.Seven trim levels. Warranty three years/ 60,000 miles Prices £12,00-£23,380. Cheapest 1.2 69bhp Pop.My choice:Twin Air Lounge. 105bhp. Mpg 50.4. Speed 0-62mph 11s. Around 100mph.

We wanted to apologise to Ted as we omitted to mention/credit him in our Summer issue for his fabulous contribution and wonderful competition prize! Sorry Ted, we were so overwhelmed by the amazing prize we plain forgot! This wonderful book “Formula One - The Knowledge (second edition)” created a stir locally & we received many entries for this much sort after book. Our lucky winner was Sarah Robertson. Congratulations Sarah - I hope you are enjoying your prize!

LOCAL AUTHOR DELVES INTO SURREY’S MILITARY HISTORY

Since moving to Surrey in 2006, Paul Le Messurier has developed a keen interest in the local and military history of the surrounding area and the county of Surrey. After a career in business, he has now turned his attention to research and writing and has produced several articles on local history including a series on the Home Front during World War 2. Located immediately to the south of London, between the capital and the English Channel, Surrey has long played a significant part in the defence of the nation. During the Civil War, Surrey was firmly on the side of the Parliamentarians. From their base in Farnham Castle, they controlled the vital Chilworth Gunpowder Mills, near Guildford. The threat to the country during the French Revolution and Napoleonic wars led to the construction of a line of semaphore signalling stations through Surrey to provide a fast communication link between London and Portsmouth. The line was replaced in 1822 by semaphore towers, some still existing today. In the late 19th century a 72-mile ring of fortified positions was established from Guildford through Surrey towards Kent and Essex, known as the London Defence Positions. In World War 1 The Queen's Royal West Surrey and the East Surrey Regiment lost over 13,000 men between them. On the first day of the battle of the

Somme troops from the 8th Battalion East Surrey Regiment were waiting for the signal to go over the top. To encourage his men, Captain W.P. ‘Billie’ Nevill provided them with footballs which they kicked as they made their way across no-man’s land. Captain Nevill was killed but his men went on to capture the enemy trenches. During World War 2 Surrey was home to several RAF fighter squadrons. Due to its proximity to London, Surrey residents were to suffer at the hands of the German Luftwaffe during the blitz. Parts of Surrey, together with Kent and Sussex, became known as ‘Bomb Alley’, with Croydon suffering more damage than any other district during Hitler’s flying bomb campaign. “Surrey’s Military History” is a fascinating window into Surrey’s military history. It gives a terrific insight into the events, people and places that are Surrey’s Military Heritage. A thoroughly good read. £14.99, www.amberley-books.com
