Welcome to April

I am writing this introduction, several weeks before it will reach you. As a result, with news and advice changing daily with regard to the Covid-19/Corona Virus, it is very difficult for us to predict the situation by the time our magazine reaches your home. As a community lead publication, our pages are always full of local events and activities for you to read about and more importantly attend. It takes us all month to collect/collate & compile our events listings and as a result, it is impossible for us to change or remove all these entries as our print press awaits our magazines now. Groups and organisations may decide to cancel or postpone their published events, so please check with the organisers before you go along. Do remember that we include a wonderful collection of local businesses and services for you to take advantage of, maybe now is the time to sort out all those little jobs you haven’t had time to organise before. It is important that we continue to support our local businesses. We all need to focus on what really matters during testing times; we have been very touched at the level of concern locally for the elderly members of our community. A group called ‘Corona Community Care’ has been set up with just this in mind, many local people are keen to help elderly neighbours or those who are having to self isolate and need help. Please see page 9 for details. Simple acts of kindness could make a massive difference to someone’s life. As the main recommendation for keeping well, is good hand hygiene, we have enclosed an official hand washing guide. This is so important and seems to be the number one way to cut your risk of being infected by the virus. Soap and water will do the job, follow the recommended methods and keep your hands away from you face as far as possible. Stay safe good people and I wish you all a peaceful Easter. With Best Regards,

Ros

Fetcham Tandoori has been my Curry Restaurant of choice for too many years to mention! It is always a treat to visit this family run restaurant, which opened way back in 1983. Following a recent refurbishment and the introduction of some wonderful new dishes, it’s now better than ever. We went along one Sunday evening and Anis Haque the owner, treated us to a selection of the new regional dishes they have on the menu. The restaurant looks really lovely. It is newly decorated and tastefully elegant. No electric water fall pictures here! The service was, as always, friendly and efficient, the staff know their regular customers, but everyone is made to feel very welcome. Anis told us about his decision to introduce some new dishes, which are more authentic and more in tune with the

food he grew up eating. In fact, his own mother’s cooking is the main influence for the new menu selections, and she spent many hours in the kitchen with Anis, putting together this exciting new menu. Ingredients are sourced locally, are organic when possible and are bought daily. Suppliers include highly regarded local butcher, Conisbee and Son’s, as well as Gray’s Gelato Ice Cream from Goldstone Farm. The cooking methods have also changed. Things are done in a far more traditional way; spices are slowly roasted and ground, in-house to create wonderfully fresh flavours and vibrant colours, and the end results are like individual works of art. In the photos included here, you can see for yourself some of the food we enjoyed; the flavours were mouth watering

and it was so good to try something a little different. Dishes are inspired by, and come from, different regions such as Bangladesh and India and these include a great selection of Vegan dishes and even a little bit of street food too! Of course, all the old favourites are still available for the slightly less adventurous, but I do strongly recommend stepping out of your comfort zone. If you are a little unsure about what to order, just ask. Anis or one of his team, will be more than happy to guide you. You won’t regret it. The take away menu is a little different from the a la carte, but has also been carefully put together to still offer a great experience at home too. I take my hat off to you Fetcham Tandoori, this is surely a winning combination. Your restaurant offers

a wonderful place to eat fabulous and authentic curry dishes with friends and family, whilst at the same time experiencing something a little different, which is truly special. THANK YOU FOR A LOVELY EVENING. WE WILL BE BACK VERY SOON. The dishes we enjoyed were:Bombay Bhel Beetroot & Aloo Murug Chicken Chicken Chettinad Murug Makoni Sagolir Manksho Saffron Pilau Peshwari Naan

c hocolate egg cupcakes The perfect Easter treat, and so easy to make - follow the simple recipe for gorgeously chocolatey sponges, then top with our ready-made chocolate icing and a Mini Creme Egg.

ingredients 100g unsalted butter, softened 175g caster sugar 3 British Blacktail Free Range Eggs 75ml whole milk 150g self-raising flour ½ tsp fine salt 25g Cadbury Bournville Cocoa Powder 400g tub Cooks’ Ingredients Tanzanian Chocolate Icing 2 x 89g pack Cadbury Mini Creme Egg (Serves 12)

method 1. Preheat the oven to 180˚C, gas mark 4; line a 12-hole muffin tin with Cooks’ Homebaking muffin cases. Using electric beaters, cream together the butter and sugar for 2-3 minutes in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy, then beat in the eggs until combined, followed by the milk. Mix together the dry ingredients and sift into the mixture. Beat in gently until combined. 2. Divide evenly between the muffin cases and bake for 20 minutes. Cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then lift out and leave to cool completely on a wire rack. 3. Give the chocolate icing a stir, then transfer it to a piping bag fitted with a star-shaped nozzle (or you can spoon it on if you don’t have a piping bag). Pipe over the top of the cakes. Halve the Mini Creme Eggs by cutting down the join with a sharp knife. Arrange on top of the icing and serve.

cooking tip An ice cream scoop is useful for dividing the cake batter evenly between the muffin cases.

Prep: 35 minutes, plus cooling. Cooking: 20mins Recipe & Photo reproduced by kind permission of Waitrose. Over 5,000 recipes can be found at www.waitrose.com/recipes

RETIRING CHAIRMAN OF ESHER FRIENDS OF CANCER RESEARCH UK

After some 36 years as part of the Esher Friends of Cancer Research UK, including 14 of them as chairman, I am stepping down from my role at the end of March. When I joined the Esher Friends of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, as it was then, back in 1984, we were group of 25 ladies working together to raise money in all kinds of ways - from running bargain sales, coffee mornings, lunches, and balls at local hotels, to arranging Christmas fairs, toy fairs, bridge drives and stalls at local summer fairs. We even arranged carol singing at Christmas time at Surbiton Station with my daughters and their school friends - very cold but great fun. In 2002 the Imperial Cancer Research Fund merged with Cancer Campaign and became Cancer Research

UK. We have continued our work since then, although the group has now dwindled to just six members and, since its inception in 1976, I am proud to say that we have raised nearly £1.2 million. As members we have had the pleasure of visiting the charity’s laboratories at Lincolns Inn Fields, The Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton and The Crick Institute in London where a seat is named ‘Esher Friends’ in recognition of the money we have raised. It has been extremely interesting to see where the money we raise is being spent. Looking back, I have really enjoyed my time with the group and have made many lasting friends. It has been a privilege to raise money for such a worthy cause Maureen Morton

Princess Alice Hospice

GRANDAD DAVE REACHES FOR THE SKIES

Dave Higgins, right, with fellow Man Shedder Ken Snowden on the bench Dave restored

A grandad of seven who says he never plans too far ahead, is taking to the skies this July in a skydive to raise funds for Princess Alice Hospice. Dave Higgins, who lives in Epsom, is taking the plunge so he can hold his own among the rest of his family, who between them have joined the Hospice’s annual Santa Fun Runs for the past three Christmases. One daughter has completed a five-day Sahara trek for charity. “Running about isn’t really my sort of thing,” he says. “I can step out of a plane and lie down - so this should suit me down to the ground - literally.” Dave, 68 this year, is aiming to raise at least £1,100 from his sponsored tandem jump, as a “thank you” to the Hospice which cared for his wife of 45 years, Ann, before she died in August 2016. He praised the care and attention that Ann had received from everyone at Princess Alice Hospice, a sentiment echoed by his family, he said. “Sometimes there was quite a crowd of us here to see Ann - but that was fine, we were treated so well the whole time.We couldn’t have asked for better. She received the very best care imaginable.” With his skydive booked for 18 July, Dave is aiming to drum up as much sponsorship as he can. He’s hoping the social clubs he attends will rally round. A fellow

22 Looklocal Magazine - April 2020

member at West Ewell Social Club, Ted White, will be joining Dave on the day as he has a skydive on his bucket list and decided it was now or never. Dave is also a member at the Comrades Club in Epsom. Originally from the Speke area of Liverpool, Dave’s early career was as a ladies’ tailor, followed by a career in heavy engineering: “Quite a big change of direction!” he said. At the height of the economic depression in 1983, Dave had been unemployed for a while and made his way South to take up work on building sites; he trained as a bricklayer and thus began another career. Ann and their children followed and the family has expanded to seven grandchildren as well, ranging in age from one to 27. This isn’t Dave first foray into fundraising; he previously abseiled down a tall building in Croydon - somewhat less than the 15,000ft he’ll dive in July. Dave is now a regular at the Man Shed in the grounds of the Hospice in Esher - a facility where men can meet up for a chat and a cuppa, sharing and learning skills such as woodworking and crafts. He’s recently restored a bench for one of the Hospice’s community allotments. He has set up a JustGiving page where donations can be made https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ david-higgins19

The 5 Natural Elements

AIR / WIND By Selina Botham

Award winning local garden designer Selina Botham thinks about the 5 Natural elements water, earth fire and wind and how they relate to gardens. This month taking a look at the air/wind and its importance in garden design. Wind is a fundamental element and of course has great impact in the landscape. You only need to look at the effect it has in those windy hillsides where you see plants bent over as they bravely attempt to grow away from the wind. Severe wind can cause real devastation and we have sen the impact of wind during the recent storms. In our gardens on a domestic scale wind in the form of leaf blowers can remove valuable topsoil and in the wider landscape extreme wind will blow and deposit sand into landforms. Wind can be important to cool us and plants and also plays an essential role in gas exchange. Plants create the oxygen we need and also conveniently use up the carbon dioxide that we create through breathing. We actually need plants to live and they need us - what an amazing partnership! When we plant a tree or grow some seeds or even plant a new garden we can be happy that we have done something to help our environment. It’s worth planting a large tree (one which will eventually grow to 20m high +) as such a tree will have so much more capacity for carbon reduction and oxygen creation. The wind direction can be a key factor in your garden design. Increasingly with climate change raising temperatures, we may want to encourage a through

breeze. Rather like opening a window both sides of your house to create a welcome through-draft on a hot day we may want to leave gaps to encourage wind in and then out of our gardens as well as our homes. Prevailing winds in this country are south-westerly or north-easterly (generally in winter) and so take care of you have a large garden and are considering removing large trees from it, since they may be helping shelter you from prevailing winds. In purely aesthetic terms I love the visual effect wind has on plant, especially blowing through grasses and meadow type plantings or gently caressing the leaves of trees. Lime trees are beautiful with silver undersides to their leaves and Salix Exigua is another plant to look out for with its delicate silver dancing leaves. A hedge will help filter wind much better than a fence or wall which deflects wind and re focuses it elsewhere. Poplar trees in a ‘shelter belt’ have been used all over Europe for centuries and we can adapt this principle using trees or hedges to create shelter from the wind and also the sun. SSelina Botham is an award winning garden designer based in Claygate. Lost Letters is a community heritage project, funded by the Heritage Fund, to engage people across Surrey with their local history through a partnership with Surrey History Centre and the rich archives they hold. It will highlight the universality of our experiences as residents of Surrey by bringing to life the lives and experiences of our predecessors and asking for a response, by letter or through the visual arts, from current residents, who will be invited to take part. It will culminate in a book, an interactive touring exhibition and an online legacy, displaying the original letters alongside some contemporary responses. Most people can relate to the key experiences and phases of life - childhood, school, love, parenting, friends, work, home, holidays, loss, celebrations - and this project will share them through the medium of letters and visual arts, bringing to life some personal heritage of the people of Surrey and illustrating its importance, value and relevance for people living in Surrey today. Collections in the project include the frank and engaging letters of Lady Mary Wallis to her friend Mary Turner covering all aspects of living life in Surrey whilst raising a family and being married to the engineer Sir Barnes Wallis and the letters of Herbert Henry

Peugot 208 ALLURE CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

There is a real treat in store for the fans of stylish French chic in the petite shape of the new Peugeot 208, a hotshot rival to all the runners in the ever increasing horde of super-minis and city cars. The last 208 was not too great a challenger to the well established likes of the VW Polo, the Ford Fiesta and the Seat Ibiza - but the latest version this sporty and elegant 208 will give them all a run for their money. And I am an unashamed fan. It offers the option of three petrol engines, one diesel and a promise to put an electric model into the fray. This hatchback has been voted the European Car of the Year. It is all set for even further success and even more global awards. It’s a looker. A five seater. And spacious on the inside, even for the leggiest among us. The electric model has a welcoming range of 217 miles. And any noise levels have been suppressed so your eardrums are not invaded either in stop-go situations or flat-out on motorways. The 1.2 Puretech engines have a boom that fades at motorway pace, and the diesel sounds a bit more hoarse whatever your demands on speed, but you would not regard it as unpleasant. The six-speed box may not enjoy the precision of say a Ford Fiesta or the Ibiza - but is responsive and slots easily into every gear. A slight setback are the views from behind the tiny steering wheel. The thickness and angle of the car’s

windscreen pillars obscure some of your view through twists and bends - but there are reasonably proportioned door mirrors. However, the rear pillars and sloping roof limit what you can see behind your back. As for parking. No problem. Fitted as standard on all models are rear parking sensors. If you are a penny pincher subject to lengthy journeys and massive mileage all year round then it is worth giving consideration to the diesel powered version purely for economy reasons. And that brings me to the 1.5 BlueHD 100. It has bags of punch from the lowest of revs and feels as sprightly as can be when it sets off from standstill. With its useful pulling power and acceleration you are freed from meddling with the gear stick. Even the least costly trim level ACTIVE is more than adequately equipped with 16 inch alloy wheels, heated door mirrors, automatic lights, air con and a leather steering wheel. The ALLURE adds 17 inch alloys, electric rear windows, climate control, privacy glass, automatic wipers and power retracting door mirrors. And there’s more. Much more.... The brainstormers behind the scenes at Peugeot have come up with a genuine showcase contender in the hard-fought city car battleground. Go for it... Specification: The Allure: Engine 1.2. Speed 0-60 in 9.6 secs. MPG:44.3. Price: £18.870.

The most important things you can do when you are stressed or anxious is to make sure you are looking after yourself and finding time to relax.

But, what’s the best way to relax? In 2016, more than 18,000 people from 134 different countries took part in the Rest Test, an online survey to investigate people’s attitudes to relaxation, and reading came out top in the survey. So, why not visit your local library in April and borrow some books to help you relax or, go online and borrow an e-book or e-audio book. If you need a little more help, pick up a Reading Well leaflet with practical information, advice and recommended reading endorsed by GPs and other health professionals. We’ve got ‘Reading Well for Children’, ‘Reading Well: Shelf Help’ for teenagers and ‘Reading Well for mental health’ for adults. We also have lists of mood-busting books and recommended books to help ‘read yourself well’. Sometimes, getting out and about can help too, so why not join us at one of our regular events.
