SURREY READING ALOUD 2019

Welcome

DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS BRILLIANT AT READING ALOUD? It might be someone in your family, your babysitter, a nursery nurse, school

to October

teacher or volunteer or anyone else you love listening to reading aloud.

We’d like to hear about them and what makes them so good at reading aloud.

30

The autumn is really here, and the weather seems to be as unpredictable as ever, what a strange year it has been so far with regard to that ! Rain in July, heat-wave weekends in September. I wonder what this month has in store for us all? I have seen reports that we are in for a ‘very harsh winter’ but to be honest, I don’t pay much attention to any such predictions these days, they always seem to be wrong! We have a number of lovely local charities asking for help this month; Elmbridge CAN who give very much needed help to Syrian Refugee families are in need of volunteers. I don’t think we can even begin to understand what these people have been Nominate them by Sunday 13 October through, but with the help and support of Elmbridge CAN, ww.surreysays.co.uk/legal-and-democratic-services/reading-aloud-competition-2019-nomination their lives are beginning to come together again. There are many opportunities to help so if you are able and willing please do see page P13 for more details. It will make a huge difference to so More information at www.surreycc.gov.uk or www.brooklandsradio.co.uk Full terms and conditions on the nomination form many. Another great local charity asking for help is Conquest Art. Their aim is to inspire people with disabilities and long term illness through the medium of art. Volunteers don’t necessarily need to be arty. If you can spare just a few hours a week they would love to hear from you. See page 17 if you can help. The Amigo Project support individuals who are recovering from mental illness. By becoming a ‘buddy volunteer’ your support of a client could encourage involvement in community activities, to aid recovery. Give them a call if you can help see page 15. Finally, MarieCurie are looking for volunteer fundraisers. An absolutely amazing charity who offer support at such difficult times. Maybe this is your calling? See page 20 for details. Remember that the clocks will be going back on Sunday 27th October, so let’s all enjoy the last few weeks of light evenings in 2019. For those of you who didn’t know, Until next time, do take care, our lovely Editor Ros, got married this summer. English gardens abroad By Selina Botham

Award winning local garden designer Selina Botham English gardens abroad. We are lucky in England to have such a strong and popular tradition of garden making which is recognised throughout the world and much admired and reproduced. In Tuscany the gardens I visited this summer both had an English influence and proudly boasted their ‘English’ gardens. As an english garden designer myself I am proud of our heritage, especially in this stunning part of Italy. The Italian gardens I visited were more highly structured than their English equivalents and they tended to be very formal and in a similar style to those found in National Trust gardens in this country. Both the gardens I visited boasted that they had been designed by English designers. Villa La Foce was probably my favourite, here the beautiful structure of the evergreens and the axis within the garden were perfect for their wider landscape setting with castle like buildings and a strong landscape beyond. The straight structured lines found in the formal gardens seemed to reflect and compliment the surrounding landscape of vineyards too. Here, the strong lines of the rows of vines almost continued the lines of the box hedging. The tall dark green cypress trees around houses and along roads created a rhythm and punctuation across the landscape which is repeated

8 Looklocal Magazine - October 2019

inside the gardens themselves too. This rhythm and connection with the wider landscape was both calming and exciting and led the eye across the landscape. The designer of La Foce, Cecil Pinsent, had even taken the opportunity of improving the wider landscape and had planted cypress trees up a winding road across the valley from the villa. It’s funny that this iconic view of Tuscany (pictured) was actually man made by an English designer. I’m not sure how Tuscan gardens will influence my own work and I am not sure that cypress trees look ‘right’ in our own landscape. As for roses, which seem to feature in every garden with an English influence, these are hard to grow well even in England so these are only successful for keen gardeners. However, with every landscape I see I find it helps to appreciate what works best and what could be improved. There was certainly lots to admire in Tuscany and I really needed much longer. Selina Botham is an award winning garden designer based in Claygate. “I WAS AFRAID BEFORE. I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT. BUT EVERYTHING IS BETTER NOW.” Bana is 12. She likes to draw colourful pictures with her best friend, Jessica, at their school in East Molesey. Eight years ago, both girls had days that they would never forget. Jessica had her first day at school in East Molesey, UK. Bana had her last day at home in Aleppo, Syria. Jessica was nervous. Her parents were nervous for her. Would she make friends? She barely recognised herself in her new uniform. For Bana, there was no time to think. Her parents had no choice but to leave. The war in Syria had made it impossible to stay. From Syria to the UK In eight years of conflict, Syria has been in and out of the news. Interest, like sympathy, has risen and fallen. In that time, Bana’s family fled their home, travelled across the Syrian border, struggled to build a life in a refugee camp, were resettled to the UK, and had a chance to rebuild their lives. That Bana and her family were able to start a new life in England is thanks to a scheme announced by the UK Government in 2015 to resettle 20,000 refugees by 2020 and to the local councils that committed to taking families under this scheme. Resettlement offered safety, but not always stability, economic security, or emotional wellbeing. Elmbridge CAN

Elmbridge CAN was formed in 2016 out of a belief that the community could and should help. Our priority was to welcome families – collecting donations, furnishing homes and helping new Syrian families to settle in the UK. Muhammad came to the UK in 2014. “I was very happy when I was told I would be going to Britain,” he explains. “But I was also afraid. I thought - how I am going to do this?” “When I arrived, I came to a house with furniture, food, toys and clothes,” Muhammad told us. “I found a welcome card for me and my family. I felt like here, we could start again.” Since then, our work has expanded to providing weekly English lessons, employment support, and small grants to help families become independent. We have advocated for a more humane refugee policy, and welcomed five more families through the Government scheme and supported countless others in our community. We have mobilised a team of committed volunteers, and held monthly events with our new Syrian neighbours. Like Bana and Jessica, we have come a long way in the last few years – but we still have a lot of work to do. To find out how you can help, please go to our website, www.elmbridgecan.org.uk

As children across the country return to the classroom, local schools are being encouraged to apply for up to £500 worth of free outdoor learning resources to allow youngsters to get hands on with nature. Applications for the Local School Nature Grants are open from now up until the 22nd November 2019 from the charity Learning through Landscapes, which is distributing £550,000 of funding raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, with funds being awarded from Postcode Local Trust. Through the programme, Learning through Landscapes wants to transform the way we currently think of outdoor education and show the learning and play potential that exists within all school grounds regardless of their setting and outdoor spaces, empowering teachers to be able to take the teaching of any curriculum subject outdoors. As well as receiving up to £500 worth of outdoor resources of their choosing, school staff will also receive a two-hour training session on how to get the most out of the equipment. The learning resources and the training sessions available are entirely customisable; meaning infant, primary and secondary schools can choose which items will best suit their learners and the setting that they will be delivered in. The programme is also open to special schools and pupil referral units. Applications are being actively encouraged from schools whose pupils are aged 5+ and are passionate about making environmental improvements for the benefit of their pupils, staff and the community. For more info & to apply for funding, please visit Learning through Landscapes’ website: www.ltl.org.uk/ projects/local-school-nature-grants

Conquest Art is a Charity, inspiring people with disabilities and long-term health issues to discover their creative energy and build self-confidence through art. Your few hours a week could make a real difference to people's lives. We are seeking volunteer helpers willing to support our Cobham art group held at The Cobham Centre, Oakdene Road, Cobham, KT11 2LY. From 10:00am to 12:00noon. Not every volunteer needs artistic ability, but you do need to be a ‘people person’ – enthusiastic, and ready to help create a friendly, welcoming environment where members feel relaxed and able to make the most of their time with us. As a volunteer you will be part of a team. A good team has a variety of different gifts from organising, being arty, good with money and making refreshments. Volunteers are the people who make Conquest Art possible. Could you join the team? Please contact us for more information and we can arrange for you to visit the group to see what the role involves and to meet the other volunteers and members. For further information please phone Tina on 020 3044 2731 email enquiries@conquestart.org or see our website www.conquestart.org

The End is Nigh - well for Windows 7

On January 14th 2020 Microsoft will officially end extended support of Windows 7. Yes in less than 2 months Windows 7 will not receive any software support or updates. But what does this actually mean for you? In very simple terms it means that your Windows 7 device will become less and less useful if you use the device for any internet connected activity. For example if you use the machine for online banking, your bank will stop you gaining access to your online accounts, as they view your computer as being a security risk to their systems. Bit by bit this will become widespread and most online shopping systems will block your ability to carry out transactions with them for the same reason. We are not saying your machine will suddenly stop working on the 14 January. Your files and photos will still be accessible, the machine will power on as before, but you will be at greater risk to security breaches, and your ability to communicate and collaborate with others will be much reduced.

What can you do about this? 1: Upgrade the software on your machine to Windows 10 (the worlds most used operating system). This does carry a cost of ÂŁ130 for the software alone, and your machine may not be designed to work efficiently with Windows 10 Or 2: Replace your computer with a new Windows 10 machine. With costs as low as ÂŁ250 for new machines this is probably the most economical route and you get a brand new, up to date machine, with a full warranty. We can transfer all your data from the old to the new machine and ensure the new machine is ready for the years ahead, with minimal disruption for you. Beat the rush- act now

Close Encounters

AN UNCOMFORTABLE NEW PLAY by Jimmie Chinn Directed by Karen Buchanan Co-Director, Marie-Jose Godby

2nd-5th October 2019 Just a suburban couple having their neighbours over to share a celebratory drink and a few nibbles on a Saturday night. One late arrival … what could possibly go wrong? Close Encounters was written by local prolific writer, Jimmie Chinn in the mid eighties. His style is to take his audience on a rollercoaster journey through a range of emotions and this two act play is no exception. In the same genre as Abigail's Party, Close Encounters is based on an awkward mix of people who have nothing in common except their geography.

Sit back and prepare to be uncomfortable in this wonderful production of Close 70 High Street, West Molesey, KT8 2LY Encounters. www.thebarntheatremolesey,co.uk

sticky sausage & mustard rolls ingredients method 1 tbsp olive oil 2 red onions, cut into wedges 3 thyme sprigs 6 Heck British 97% Pork Sausages 150ml dry cider 1 tsp clear honey 1 heaped tbsp English mustard 4 ciabatta rolls 1 heaped tbsp dijonnaise 1 tsp lemon juice ½ small red cabbage (about 300g), finely shredded (Serves 4)

1. Preheat the oven to 180˚C, gas mark 4. Heat the oil in a large frying pan or casserole over a medium heat and add the onions, thyme and sausages. Fry for 15 minutes, stirring regularly. Pour in the cider and add the honey and mustard. Simmer, stirring regularly, for 10-15 minutes until the sauce is sticky and reduced, and the sausages are cooked through. 2. Meanwhile, put the ciabatta rolls in the oven to warm for 10 minutes while you make the slaw. Mix the dijonnaise, lemon juice and 1 tsp water in the base of a mixing bowl, then add the red cabbage and toss through to dress. 3. Halve the sausages lengthways (otherwise they’ll fall out of the rolls). Split open the rolls and fill each with 3 sausage halves and a heap of slaw, with extra on the side.

Porsche Cayman T CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

In bygone days, when rashness, flash and show-off were my middle names I owned...successively...a Sunbeam Talbot 90, three E-type Jaguars, a Mercedes sports and a scarlet Lamborghini Espada. Then I grew up and awoke to a sense of responsibility which took the fine form of a Porsche Cayman, in my humble opinion the greatest value for money sports car that has ever been the temptation for the more monied among us, or the not so well-heeled, to want to be seen driving. It is driven by Trophy Wife much more often than me and she loves it. No wonder. It does exactly what she tells it to do. A bit like me! Whatever mood any driver finds themselves in, reflected in the right foot, the Cayman’s response is instant whether to be docile or daring, snail pace or involved in motorway top speeds. And it is equally at ease whether dashing at an M-way rate of knots or lingering idly along twisty and narrow country lanes, evidenced lately by a journey of the Macauley-twosome to deepest Cornwall ,that give the car such an agreeable response, we would not swop it...except for another one!! The latest has just come on the market, the Cayman T, an extension of the fine and desirable reputation this brand of Porsche has developed. Among the mass of so-called super and sports cars, this newest and freshest challenger has just about everything even the fussiest of owners could want...speed and comfort, all in absolute safety. It zooms from zero-62 mph in 4.7 seconds and,

26 Looklocal Magazine - October 2019

if our authorities allowed it, would roar onto the 170mph mark. Phew! You can feel chuffed just sitting on that potential. You know the stunning acceleration is there at the merest pressure on the pedal if needs be. The up-to-date sports car market is bursting with ranks of rivals and hot shots like the Alpine A110 Pure or the Toyota GR Supra Pro which loom large but Porsche have honed their challenger...nay...leader...to the finest of levels and performance with economy to satisfy the most tight-fisted, like me, in our midst. The so-called add-ons that can boost the price to £67,000 are to my mind not such a good idea or value when they are not really necessary. So, what makes the now-lighter Cayman with its sportier chassis such a genuine treat? It is mid-engined and superbly balanced. In my opinion just about the finest handling car on the highways and byways scene. It goes around corners with a focus on the challenge that is laser-like. The weighty steering, its mightly powerful and effective brakes, all combine to fill whomsoever is behind the wheel with utter and complete confidence in this compact offering of motoring perfection. As an all rounder, lolly-wise and good looking without being OTT, the five-star Cayman is a real beaut - and the latest edition merely serves to underpin its already matured assets. Specification: Porsche Cayman T. Top speed 170mph. Mpg 32.8. 0-62 in 4.7 secs. Price£54,358.

ESHER LIBRARY

As the nights draw in, why not take advantage of the Library on your doorstep to revisit some of your old favourites or discover a new author? We have an enormous range of books, both old, established, new & exciting. Why not try a new genre? It’s free & easy & you may discover a new favourite. Esher is a Surrey Library & if we do not have the next book in a series you are reading or do not have the particular title you want on our shelves it is highly likely it will be in one of the other 56 libraries in Surrey. You can request the book be delivered to Esher by either logging onto the Surrey Libraries website (www.surreycc.gov.uk/libraries) or download the Surrey Libraries app to your phone. You need your card number & your PIN number (which a member of staff can give you if you do not know it). Reservations only cost 75p a book for adults & are free for children or Young Adults. We are delighted to welcome local author Serena Hassan to Esher Library on Tuesday 29 October. Serena will be telling the story of ‘The tap dancing pigeon of Covent Garden’, a story with a message about caring for the environment. She will be holding a craft session after the story time. You can find out further info on her website www. serenahassan.co.uk. She has also had an article published on the following website http://bookbrunch.co.uk/page/free-article/how-stories-can-tackle-climatechange/ Please come along to this event & support the library in promoting local talent. There will be an opportunity to purchase Serena’s book but be advised that it will have to be a cash purchase. As mentioned last month Our Digital Buddy is an excellent advocate for our Online services - she can show customers how to access the different resources from free newspapers, to Ancestry & Find my Past, free online courses, streamed music & much more. They can help people set up an email address, social media accounts & online shopping, how to do searches online, help with phones & Tablets & to use the Library App. Libraries find the Digital Buddy service invaluable as staff can only offer a limited amount of help. Customers who need more specific help & support can book a session with the Digital Buddy. She is with us every Tuesday morning. Libraries remain a welcoming and free place to spend time. If you are looking for a place to meet up with a friend, do some work or just read a book during your lunch break, please come along. There are no commitments & we are warm & dry & friendly.
