FASHION 4 GOOD WHAT’S COOKING? QUEEN MARY II REVIEW MUSIC MATTERS CROSSWORD COMPUTER TIPS GARDENING WITH SELINA WHAT’S ON See what’s on in and around Esher in April

From the Editor Welcome to our April issue,

I do hope you are all well and that you enjoyed a lovely Easter break. I spent some of the long weekend sorting out my garden, and although I certainly don’t claim to have green fingers, it was good to tidy up a little after the dull months of winter. The grass is growing and the trees are budding. I’m looking forward to the green outlook after the bare tree view of the past few months. I must say, I’m even tempted to grow some veggies this year, nothing too ambitious, but the memory of the aroma and the taste of freshly picked tomatoes is tempting me to get my hands dirty! We have lots of fun things to share with you this month. I received a lovely message earlier last month, asking if I would share the following with you. The story started back in the mid-1960s in Twickenham and draws to a conclusion in Twickenham on the 16th April this year. It all hinges around a lovely old bus which, after all its trips abroad back in the 60s, has thousands of miles on the clock! Many of the young people who travelled around Eurpe on the bus back then came from the Surrey area and it is hoped that we can find and remind any of them reading this of those halcyon days and encourage them to attend a reunion after some fifty years. See inside for more information. Ted has been globe-trotting too, not on a bus, though. Read his account of a trip to remember aboard the QM2. Fashion 4 Good is back! This lovely local event is always a joy to attend, book your tickets now and save the date. Addedto this mix our regular puzzles, recipe, gardening feature, book reviews, lots of local events and so much more, I bring you this month’s Look Local in Esher. Wishing you all a great month, Warmest regards,

ASK BRUCE: MY FIRST DOG In this month’s Ask Bruce column, we cover some suitable breeds for first-time dog owners, as requested by readers Sarah and Ed Constable. They have two children aged eight and 10 and enjoy the outdoors. Given they are keen for a medium-sized dog, spaniels are ideal but may need lots of exercise, particularly working cocker spaniels. Hungarian vizslas also make excellent family dogs and are very good with children, as are labradors. However, a dog breed is a very personal choice, and there are many other lovely breeds in addition to these. We’re always happy to chat in more detail and offer advice for people getting a puppy. On the smaller side is the cockapoo, which has a lovely disposition and the added bonus of not moulting. With all of these breeds, do remember, if taking them on as puppies that you’ll need to dedicate a lot of time, training and care for the first six months. Alternatively, you can go for a mixed breed from dog rescue centres like the Dogs Trust. As these tend to be fully grown dogs, you’ll be able to see their size, and the charity will have spent time with them so will know their personalities and make sure you get something that suits your lifestyle. In terms of travelling in the car, all dogs travel well if trained. So here’s to lots of fun family holidays together – enjoy! Lacking space and having decided moving house was not an option, Gemma and Sach Gholap chose L&E (Lofts and Extensions) to transform their pretty Victorian cottage in Teddington. Gemma reflects, “We knew we couldn’t stay in this house unless we made it bigger. We looked around but it is just so expensive to move.” After getting the loft converted two years in, they had waited another six months before they felt ready to tackle the ground floor extension. Gemma comments “We knew we needed lots of light coming in and used the same architect that had done the loft to draw up plans.” Attention then turned to choosing a builder. “We got loads of quotes from local companies and went to see two or three jobs from the top ones. The jobs we looked at from L&E looked really good, and people couldn’t say enough nice things about the team.” The comprehensive payment plan L&E provided also helped. “When the quotes came back, L&E’s was more detailed so we could be really

U

S

clear on what we were getting for the money.” L&E’s team began to dig the foundations for the new extension in a cold, snowy January. Once footings were complete, the team moved inside and soon after Gemma and Sach sensibly decided to move in with friends for a month. They kept in close contact with the site foreman however. “We had regular meetings and he was really good at keeping us updated with progress. Once a week, we would sit down and agree what was happening and what we needed to buy next,” Gemma remembers. With the major building work complete, the team moved onto the second phase of the project. “We had a clear vision of what we wanted and we’d come along and discuss it with the foreman to work out the best options. My husband is a perfectionist and so they knew it had to be exactly right,” Gemma remembers. “The foreman was great. There was always really good attention to detail and the finish was really good.”

Indeed with cleverly defined zones there is a seamless flow throughout the ground floor and the oasis of calm belies its role as the hub of the house. The kitchen rooflights mean the ground floor space is flooded with light and the modern bi-folding doors open out for an uninterrupted connection with the garden space. Instead of moving, the couple can now put down roots. It’s also worth reflecting on the cost of moving versus building an extension and the value that creates in your home. Gemma puts it simply – “We couldn’t afford to buy this now!”

Mr and Mrs Gholap are so confident in recommending L&E (Lofts & Extensions) that they are even happy to show you around their new home. Contact them via L&E to arrange a viewing.

ccording to the Surrey paranormal database, Walton-on-Thames has its share of things that go bump in the night. It records whisperings, strange footsteps and `stationery cupboard doors rattling unaided by human hand` at the Clock Tower in Bridge Street - and the ghost of the man who signed Charles I`s death warrant appearing in the Old Manor House in Manor Road. Theatres are famous for their ghosts - and, set in a solitary recess off Hepworth Way, the Cecil Hepworth Playhouse may be no exception. The Playhouse was originally part of movie pioneer Hepworth`s film studios and one of his movies, “A Ghostly Affair”, the story of a burglar driven away from a haunted castle by paintings coming to life, had audiences looking through closed fingers in 1914. The studios, turned into a local theatre in 1924, are now home to the The Ember Players – and many a set or lighting designer, burning the midnight oil, has been aware of unexplained shufflings and whisperings along its corridors and staircases. A perfect setting, it seemed, for the group`s spring production – a retelling of the classic comedy chiller “The Cat and the Canary” written by John Willard in 1922 and immortalised in the 1939 film starring Paulette Goddard and Bob Hope. Director Lisa Mills has devised and is staging an ingenious re-telling of the classic original story. “It`s a comedy melodrama set in the home of a deceased millionaire,” she explains. “A shadowy world where, according to the psychic housekeeper, `Evil spirits are at work`. The characters are potential `heirs` gathering for a reading of the will – but only one can inherit, provided they don`t meet with death or go mad within one month.” Throw in an escapee from an asylum for the criminally insane and an ominous gong that presages `Of the eight people present in this room, only seven will survive the

My cast has sworn an oath of secrecy not to reveal the ending of the play. We`re going to make our audiences take that oath, too – and no-one, but no-one will be admitted once the curtain has gone up.” “The Cat and the Canary”, sponsored by Savills Esher Lettings, is at the Cecil Hepworth Playhouse, Walton on Thames, from April 28th – 30th at 8 p.m. Book tickets, if you dare, from 07752 655 087 or www.ticketsource.co.uk/emberplayers

n 7 February 1964, an advertisement appeared in The Times: “Young people over 18. See Europe in a double-decker bus. 25 July - 16 Aug. 6 countries. £28. Probably less. Phone POP 1841.” 22-year-old Tim Lewis came up with the idea and bought an old London Transport bus for £400. Actually, it was Cliff Richard in his film Summer Holiday who came up with the idea! On Saturday, 25 July, it left Twickenham with 23 girls and 17 boys on board - students from across Britain on a 2,000 mile, 3 week camping holiday across Europe. As dream holidays go, one that involves camping with a bunch of strangers and spending 3 weeks seeing Europe from inside an old bus that is hot, slow and as noisy as a steam kettle may not be everyone’s idea of the trip of a lifetime. But wind the clock back to ‘swinging’ 1964, and make that vehicle a gleaming red double-decker bus, still resplendent in London Transport livery, and everything changes. It was a trip that somehow captured the spirit of the age. The bus also attracted much press attention and

public curiosity. We’d stop at a garage to fill up with diesel, and a French TV film-crew would appear. In Paris, local press photographers insisted that we drive round and round the Arc de Triomphe in heavy traffic to get the perfect shot for their newspapers. In 1965, we formed the Double-Decker Club (DDC) and more holidays followed throughout the 60s. “Aside from the inevitable punctures, our biggest problem was low bridges. We’d even go down a country lane to avoid one. In mid-France, we were going through a vineyard when suddenly a group of French labourers working in the fields stopped working and started waving at us as if we’d come to liberate them. It was really quite emotional.” “Yes, it was all a bit hippyish and these were, of course, the groovy days of long hair, mini-skirts, psychedelic rock and free love. But the holidays themselves weren’t in any sense salacious, they were just immense fun, and many of the friendships that were made have lasted half a lifetime”. We have now organised a nostalgic DDC reunion in Twickenham on 16 April. For more details, email: ddc.alan@yahoo.co.uk

Queen Mary 2 The Statue of Liberty, highlighted by a shaft of dawn sunlight against a backdrop of New York’s spectacular silhouetted skyscraper lights, was the greeting icon as Queen Mary 2 sailed majestically towards landfall after a week-long crossing of the Atlantic from her UK base in Southampton.

Despite a night’s farewell partying until 2am, my and my wife Delia’s 4.30am awakening by the butler tending our Queen’s Grill stateroom, was boosted by the anticipation of being welcomed by the skylined iconic figure towering over New York harbour, America’s gateway. Like standing beneath the Eiffel Tower in Paris, sailing under the Sydney Harbour Bridge, eyeing Japan’s snowcapped Mount Fuji from the cosy comfort of the Bullet Train or visiting the Tower of London, the Statue of Liberty, as if beckoning, offers untold promise of new experiences. It was a scene described to me years ago by my grandfather who was Third Engineer on the original Queen Mary...that and his tales of revelling and cocktailpartying with movie legends such as Erroll Flynn, Elizabeth Taylor, David Niven, Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. A summons to New York by my publisher was the perfect opportunity

for me to realise a lifetime’s ambition and follow in the footsteps - or rather the ocean wake - of my grandfather and sample ultimate style on the go. And, believe me, the Cunard flagship Queen Mary 2, the largest, longest, widest, tallest liner ever built, exemplifies the highest grade possible of totally pleasurable life on the ocean waves. I reckoned she would be big, but even my wildest imaginings fell far short of actuality when I left the reception zone at Southampton and was confronted by the Queen, towering as high as a 23-storey building, 200 feet above the waterline and stretching 1,130 feet long. My amazement rarely faltered over the following eight days at sea in this 150,000 tonner which, with its Rolls Royce units, equivalent to 115,328HP, and stabilizers, made such lightwork of three days of riding gale force eight waves that it barely stirred a ripple in our pre-dinner bubbly. For those who worry about sea-

sickness, the worst the notorious Atlantic can throw at a ship like the QM2 is little more than a mere disturbance without discomfort easily dealt with and levelled out. And that brings me to another worthy aspect : the exquisite dining. Every night was a black tie and cocktail dress event for couples who revelled in the formality and festooned themselves in finery worthy of any red carpet showpiece gala. If you had forgotten to fill your Vuittons with the necessary evening apparel, there was a full range of the poshest formal wear available for hire. Feasting in the 1,347-seater Britannia Restaurant, an elegant dinery stretching the width of the ship, three decks high - and with a vast staircase, the grandest of entrances - was the perfect setting for some show-offery. Talking about showing off, Trophy Wife Delia and I were invited ahead of nearly 2,000 fellow passengers to dine exclusively with the captain, Kevin Oprey, at his table, along with

tenor Jonathan Ansell, starring on more than two million albums, and the top of the bill in the QM’s tiered 1094-seater theatre. The delights did not end there. I found myself heading daily to the classy bows-end pianobar Commodore Club to meet up with new-found friends.

Our highest grade stateroom, with its balcony, bar, TV and vast doublebed, was a spacious sanctuary, served discreetly by our own immaculately dressed butler who, at whatever time, day or night, he was asked to be in attendance, was never a splitsecond late. We ate mostly in the exclusive and efficient cosy 200-place Queen’s Grill with its ocean views and cuisine on a par with the finest on-shore dineries. Ritz-Carlton Hotel opposite Central Park and a casual stroll away from Fifth Avenue and Times Square. And our fussed-over luxury lifestyle starts all over again. Not since I was last in New York, when I arrived by Concorde from Paris, had I been fortunate enough to sample the high life unique to this vibrant metropolis, like the tasty cuisine in the uppercrust diner, the Auden Bistro, in the Ritz-Carlton. And in between, the down-to-earth value-for-money warmly welcoming Italian family restaurant Antica Bottega del Vino, a five minute stroll away from the hotel’s front door to its pavement terrace. I was very pleased to see that the place had not really changed since my last visit. My four days in New York passed in a flash and I would have eagerly made a leisurely return to London aboard the Queen Mary 2. But sadly, an urgent diary date in Cobham had me flying home. Ah well, it was very nice while it lasted... By Ted Macauley

The wonderful Ray Davies is one of the most successful and influential songwriters to emerge from the glorious British invasion of the international pop scene of the mid-60s. He formed the Kinks with his brother, Dave, in North London in 1964, and Ray went on to sing, write, create some of the best-loved songs and anthems of the era. Hits such as You Really Got Me, All the Day and All of the Night, Tired of Waiting, Set Me Free, Dedicated Follower of Fashion, Sunny Afternoon, Waterloo Sunset, Lola, Apeman, Come Dancing and Where Have All the Good Times Gone (which was later covered by David Bowie on his Pin-Ups album) are all evocative memories from an amazing time. Actually, I’ve always thought that Ray and David Bowie had something in common by singing in their English accents, unlike so many who adopted an American accent while singing about and also celebrating the sights and sounds of everyday life here. Other artists who would end up competing with them for chart places were the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, the Animals, Them, the Who, Small Faces and many more. So, with all that as a background, it was a real pleasure to visit The Harold Pinter Theatre in the West End one evening last week to see Sunny Afternoon, the multiaward winning, feel-good musical which is based on the music of The Kinks. Life wasn’t always smooth for the Londoners. Having got into a dispute with America’s musicians’ federation, they were banned from touring in the US for 4 years, which cost them millions, and the on- and off-stage infighting between Ray and Dave often meant an edgy, tense relationship. The Kinks’ extraordinary story, which unfolds in Sunny Afternoon, is a must-see. More than just a cavalcade of some great hits, it’s a show which is both enlightening and entertaining in equal measure and I heartily recommend it to anyone who loves the 60s and remembers the Kinks’ contribution with affection.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

WHEN

BUYING

When buying a computer or laptop, there is a whole heap of jargon that people throw at you, expecting you to know what they are talking about - SSDs, RAM, MHz, wifi, HDMI and so it goes on. We have always felt that this is a very rude way to treat your fellow man, so yes, we can talk jargon with you, but we can also talk in finest English to ensure your needs are best met. There are a few pointers that you might appreciate knowing before you buy your new machine. The key components: The processor or the CPU - the engine that powers the PC. It is advisable to buy the best that you can, as CPUs are costly items and are not efficient to change or upgrade at a later stage. For the basis of a good allround home machine, we would usually advise either an Intel Core i5 or i7 CPU. There are model variations within these CPUs, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet. Memory or RAM - the more the better, but this can often be retro-fitted. 4Gb of RAM is considered a minimum; going beyond 8Gb is often unnecessary. We have just started building machines with the latest, fastest DDR4 memory, which will move the boundaries on computers’ performance for years to come. Hard drives - the conventional mechanical hard drives have been using the same technology for around 20

A

COMPUTER

years. They are very economical, have huge storage capacity, but can be slow. Upgrade to a solid state hard drive (SSD), and the performance is phenomenal: they work at 15-20 times faster than the mechanical drives, they are more reliable (as they have no moving parts), but they cost more and have less storage capacity than the older type of hard drives. A great solution is to have both in a machine. The SSD runs the operating system and programs and the mechanical drive stores your data. Graphics cards - game players, photo and video editors and graphics users are better served by having a dedicated graphics card installed, which in some cases can cost as much as the computer. In most cases, using the onboard graphics is sufficient, and should you wish to upgrade the graphics, this can sometimes be added in a PC retrospectively, but unfortunately not in a laptop. Operating system - Windows is the dominant system here, and the versions currently available are Windows 7, 8 and 10. The free-of-charge upgrade to Windows 10 will still be available until June/July this year. Windows 7 will still be supported until 2020 if you would like to stick with a long-established favourite. We would recommend Windows 10 for home machines, as it works in a very efficient manner.

AWARD-WINNING LOCAL GARDEN DESIGNER SELINA BOTHAM

SHARES HER TOP TIPS FOR CREATING SOME

MAGICAL GARDEN LIGHTING. A well-designed lighting scheme creates another layer of interest and a new atmosphere in your garden. It also means that you can make the most of your beautiful garden for a longer period of time. In winter, gardens come alive with strategic lighting, and in summer, the garden remains useable and inviting as dusk draws in. Low voltage LED lights are flexible and can be moved and added to if required and are really cheap to run. A few tips:- Highlight the best and don’t light the worst features (I know that sounds obvious…). - Put utility or security lights on a separate circuit so they can be switched off when you don’t want them to spoil the atmosphere. - Create balance within the garden; symmetry is sometimes important, but balance is always vital - Highlight sculpture or a key texture or contrast. - Point the beam away from the viewer to avoid a dazzling light. - Let the light beam itself do the work, rather than creating a focal point with the light fixture. - Vary the shade of white light to create interest and contrast, e.g. bright white to highlight a tree, a warmer light to wash a wall.

- Light behind a bench to create a lovely warm glow and good reflected light. - Lights which wash over the step tread tend to work better than those placed on the riser, as they can be too dominant. - Take care with spots set into a deck or a terrace, as they can create a blinding glare or a ‘runway’ feel. - Reflected light is soft and creates a warm ambience, so spotlights in planting around the terrace work well when combined with wall lights washing down the wall. Your garden lights can be connected to a remote control

or even your phone, so you don’t even need to damage the paintwork in the house when you have your garden designed and lit. Selina Botham is an award winning garden designer, based in Claygate. If you would like to improve and make the best of your garden and need some professional help, contact Selina for an initial garden consultation on 07894 553 202 or see her website for further ideas www.designsforallseasons.co.uk and her Facebook page Selina Botham - Designs for all Seasons or follow her on Twitter.

The 61st Esher May Fair will be held on Esher Green starting at 11.45am on Saturday 21st May 2016. This popular local community event, which takes place annually, is a major fundraising activity for the organizers, 4th Thames Ditton ‘Ajax’ Sea Scouts. They are not the only group to benefit though: charities and organisations are invited to take stalls on the day and raise money for their own good causes. An action-packed, fun afternoon out for all the family. The fair has traditional fairground rides, stalls selling arts and crafts, charity items and local products. The ever popular auction will have items for children and adults. An exciting programme of arena events runs from 11.45am until 5pm and includes the 1st Hook Scout &

Guide Band, Kuk Sool Won Martial Arts, Chadsworth Stage School, Surrey Falconry and a canine gymkhana. To sustain the family and to provide the opportunity to sit down and relax, a wide variety of refreshments will be on offer, including the famous Ajax Sea Scouts tea tent, Henry’s barbeque run by Henry’s Grill, and for those in need of something stronger, a beer and prosecco tent. Free parking is available at Sandown Park. We are hoping for excellent weather and a great turnout. For further information about the Esher May Fair, the auction list and a detailed itinerary of the day’s event, please see www.eshermayfair.org.uk or visit our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/eshermayfair.

TED MACAULEY TEST DRIVES THE NEW VOLVO D5 INSCRIPTION

T

he motor-mad fraternity is about to be wooed by a handsome newcomer, or to be more accurate, an updated and uprated version of a long-standing legend. So, stand back and admire Volvo’s latest desirable stunner, the XC90, and if you are looking for sheer value for money, dig out the cheque book. NOW!! This re-booted seven-seater family wagon is a surefire winner on the hugely competitive SUV battlefront, following on in fresh form from its beloved predecessor which first graced the roads 12 years ago. And the likes of rivals BMW X5, the Audi Q7 and yes, even the immaculate Range Rover, are in danger of being overshadowed by this kingpin car with its five-star lustre. A harmony of great looks and sumptuously elegant style allied to absolutely spacious comfort, safety and performance are guarantees of another formidable market run for

the Scandanavian manufacturers. Unlike some opposing SUVs, the three rows of fulsome seating capable of coping with seven long-legged adults are Business Class, bordering on First, and with the sensibly situated sideways-on engine cockpit, room is extensive. As a family transporter, it could not be better. The first two rows have five seats that all recline and slide, and the third row is more than adequate for teenage restlessness.Behind all of that is a boot big enough to swallow up all the kit you and the kids would want to carry away on holiday. The 2.0-litre, four cylinder engine and four-wheel drive all add up to admirable refinement and driving ease, with eight automatic gears to smooth you and yours along motorways and down wiggly country lanes with equal agility. The whole plot is almost five metres long, so Volvo, mindful of parking problems and rear-viewing for space, have fitted a park-assist system that guides you safely into your tight target gap.

And just in case you fail to notice an invasive cyclist or a road-crossing pedestrian, mobile pressed to ear and absent-mindedly failing to see you coming, there’s an auto-brake that detects them and any other vehicles and stops you in your tracks. The drivers’ eye view in a wholly wow-factor interior, all glorious leather and grainy woodwork, is just the job, and all the on-board functions are controlled from a nineinch tablet touch-screen set-up that dominates the centre dash. And you need only wag and wave a finger, gloved even, near the screen to operate all sorts of services, such as the cute infotainment system, satnav, climate control and all manner of jam-packed technology. I have to say the entire experience, taking in short or long journeys alike, in town or out, is a real treat in a versatile all-rounder of upper-class style. Specification: the Volvo D5 Inscription. 2.0-litre. BHP 228. Top speed 137mph. 0-60mph in 7.8 seconds. Mpg 48.7. Price £50,685.
