to April
Welcome to our Easter issue! How lovely to have a long weekend to look forward to at the end of this month. Let’s hope by the time it comes around the sun will shine for us all! We have lots of great news and info packed into this issue of Look Local, including news about some great concerts coming up in April from ‘Music on the Green’. These are very popular events so do book your seat nice and early to avoid disappointment. Esher library has lots going on this month; author Katrina Sealy will be hosting the regular story time, there will also be an Easter craft session on 16th April, and Tony Green from Sight for Surrey will be offering hearing and sight loss advise on 30th April, so many great events, what a fabulous local resource! Also this month, there is more ‘Jazz at Imber Court’ - see page 23 for details. We are delighted to welcome local resident and guest poet Keith Havelock to fill our Poem Corner this month. And finally this, we have a super duper competition for all you motor heads out there! Courtesy of Mr Ted McCauley, our Look Local motor correspondent! A very beautiful book is up for grabs so remember, you’ve got to be in it, to win it! Good Luck to all who enter! Wishing you all a great month, until next time....

Royal Horticultural Society celebrates Edible Britain for National Gardening Week Encouraging everyone to grow-your-own is the theme of this year’s National Gardening Week (29 April–5 May 2019)
© RHS Jason Ingram
The nation’s biggest celebration of gardening returns for 2019 from Monday 29 April to Sunday 5 May 2019 as the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) encourages everyone to get involved in grow-your-own. The theme for this year is Edible Britain, with the RHS calling on gardeners up and down the country to share their love of home-grown produce. In 2019, the RHS hopes even more people will get involved and has created a brand new website so people can find out how to take part: www.rhs.org.uk/ nationalgardeningweek. Registration is now open for this year’s event, with everyone invited to upload their events and activities to the website and discover hints and tips for taking part. For this year’s Edible Britain theme, the RHS will aim to demonstrate that everyone has space to grow something delicious to eat, whether it’s a single pot of herbs on the windowsill or an allotment overflowing with courgettes and potatoes. RHS Chief Horticulturist Guy Barter says, “After it was reported earlier this month that the RHS has seen sales of fruit and vegetable seeds outstrip flowers at its Plant Centres over the last year, it’s clear that people are keen to reconnect with where their food comes from. We’re supporting this burgeoning interest by encouraging garden centres, nurseries, clubs, societies and other organisations

to showcase their edible expertise, as well as highlighting grow-your-own at our RHS Gardens and Flower Shows.” Guy offers the following top tips to those who are wondering what they can grow this National Gardening Week: · There is still time to sow seeds of hardy plants like carrots, coriander, beetroot and parsley. In fact, clay soils may not be dry and warm enough for good results until this time. · Sowings of salads such as lettuce and radishes, and peas and broad beans, can be made now, and sow again every three weeks until early July for a continuous supply. · Cold-sensitive but quick-growing plants such as basil, courgettes, French beans, runner beans and sweetcorn can be sown indoors now for planting out in a month’s time (six weeks in the north). · Although it is too late to sow slow-growing tender plants such as aubergines, chilli peppers, sweet peppers and tomatoes, they are widely are widely offered as potted plants: buy them now to grow on in greenhouses, and set them out later when the risk of frost has passed. For more ideas and advice on what to grow and how to grow it, see the National Gardening Week website. For further info, visit www.rhs.org.uk/gardens/wisley. Scams and Password protection... the importance of protecting your passwords
There are reports almost daily of data breaches and significant losses of users’ credentials from large, reputable businesses like hotel chains, airlines and the like. Recent companies to acknowledge they have been compromised are: MyFitnessPal had 143 Million account details breached or stolen MyHeritage reported 91 Million records taken MySpace had 359 Million accounts hacked Linkedin had 164 Million accounts breached Adobe had 152 Million accounts stolen Facebook had 87 Million records breached Now you might, correctly, say “why does it matter that someone has your MyFitnessPal account details?” In isolation it may not be very significant, but you may have stored your credit or bankers details on their system, and more significantly they will have your user name and password. If the same crooks, then breached, say, your Adobe account information, they might see that your account user name and password have similarities, which they then may go try and login to, say, Amazon as you, and start buying items for delivery to their locations. This isn’t scare-mongering, it is reality What can you do to protect yourself? There is a useful website named www.haveibeenpwned.com. By putting in your email address it will tell you how many recorded breaches of your email address have been recorded. If you try this random email address johnsmith@hotmail.com, it will tell you it has been compromised on 92 occasions and where this compromise came from If you have been pwned what can you do? Change your email password twice in a week, and ensure your new password is not similar to the old one, ensure it has numbers, upper, lower case letters, and punctuation symbols in it. Try to have a different password for your major activities like email, shopping websites, finance websites. Personally, I have used a password storing program for years called Ascendo DataVault, it will synchronise with your smart phone, PC, Mac and tablets. In the program I never record the actual password, obviously this is personal preference, I might have password “A” being Apple, “B” being Banana, then I might add my work postcode, making my password Bwork? actually becoming “BananaKT227AW?” To check out how secure your new password is you could put it into www.howsecureismypassword.net, the above example would take a computer 415Million years to crack! As part of our Total Care Support package we get asked to help recover users accounts details where their accounts have been hacked. In most cases we are successful, but can’t be guaranteed.

Garsons ‘tests the water’ with its latest ecological initiative
Garsons outdoor leisure supervisor Christian Darby shows off the eco range of swimwear now available.
Garsons of Esher is one of the first shops in the country to stock a range of ecological swimwear made from abandoned fishing nets rescued from the oceans. The garden centre now has 12 different lines of the Ecolast swimwear from Zoggs which began life as waste material harmful to marine life. “It is hard to imagine that this elegant range of swimwear started out as ghost fishing lines, old carpet and plastic waste,” says outdoor leisure supervisor Christian Darby. “It fits in perfectly with the Garsons ethos of reuse, recycle and reduce.” The waste material is rescued from the sea and saved from landfill through nationwide initiatives such as The Econyl Reclaiming Programme and is converted into regenerated nylon.
18 Looklocal Magazine - April 2019
Available at Garsons in adult and children’s designs, the Ecolast material, a combination of 78% Econyl yarn and 22% Lycra, is said to be 15 times more resilient to chlorine than standard swimwear fabrics. “As a family of growers, we know exactly how important it is to respect and protect our environment for future generations,” says Ben Thompson, Garsons director. “The idea of having swimwear made from discarded fishing nets which are harming marine life shows that something wonderful can come out of a negative and we are very proud to be one of the first to stock this range.” For more information visit the Garsons Farm website: www.garsons.co.uk. ESHER LIBRARY
‘April is the cruellest month’ so says T.S.Eliot. Let’s hope not!! We’re hoping for more of the lovely weather we experienced at the end of February. We have a new and improved True Collection here at Esher. These books are stories with a factual or real content. Examples are ‘Also human’ by Caroline Elton, looking at the inner lives of doctors; ‘The greatest comeback’ by David Bolchova telling the story of Bela Guttman, a Holocaust survivor, who went on to become coach of Benfica football club who lifted the European Cup in 1961 and 1962. Plus several tales of heroic animals. They will potentially have you laughing and crying whilst reading. A reminder about some special events coming up. We are having an Easter Craft session on Tuesday 16 April at 10.30am, cost £1 per child. Author Katrina Sealy will be hosting our regular Story time slot at 3.45pm reading Angry angry Angus with related activities for children to take part in after the reading. This is a free session and should last about 1 hour. April 30 sees the welcome return of Tony Greene an advisor for Sight for Surrey. Tony will be on site from 11.30am to offer hearing and sight loss advice, provide information and if necessary signpost individuals to relevant local services and networks. He will also be able to demonstrate and supply a range of specialist equipment and will offer basic repairs to NHS hearing aids. Please note he will not be offering hearing or sight tests. Come along for an informal chat. Remember being a member of Esher Library means you are a member of all 52 Surrey libraries!! If you are out and about and decide to borrow something from Guildford library, for example, you can return it to Esher and it will find its way home. How convenient is that?

Kids need nature By Selina Botham
In these days of increasing stress for children and young people, playing outside is one of the best things we can encourage our children to do to help them to relax and recharge their batteries. Award winning garden designer Selina Botham gives her top tips on how to encourage children to play outside more and discover nature in their own back garden. Flower power - Have plenty of flowers in the garden so you can spare a few - let the children pick them and use the petals to make potions and perfume. Give them a few bottles and let them set up a stall; rush to be their first customer. Ah.. Smells lovely! Back to basics - Kids love to tunnel and scrape away soil so, if you can, leave an area with bare soil perhaps tucked away from your favourite plants and let them get stuck in. Water increases the fun and they can make a muddy soup or pie too. Recently, I’ve designed a scooped out log for a family, which will become an outdoor sink and mud play area. Natural play spaces - A woven willow wigwam creates a beautiful green play space for children. Likewise, other play equipment can be natural, cut logs can make stepping stones, and tree trunks laid on their sides can make fun walkways. A tree swing or even a tree to climb can be a great way to play and learn. If you grow hazel this can be coppiced (cut at the base) and the sticks can be used to make wigwams and other camps. Natural play areas are easier to site than the more usual bright plastic play equipment and better for the environment too. If you add a fire pit, adults can join the kids for family fun round the fire into the evening. Plenty of adults enjoy balancing on a log too! Mini beast fun - If your garden is really tidy you may have to set up some hiding places for mini beasts and then go back in a few days and see who has moved in. Look for mini beasts under logs and rocks or perhaps old plant pots. Encourage children to experiment and see which creatures like shade or sun or damp or dry conditions? Don’t worry if you don’t

know the creatures’ names, the children could name them themselves or even do some internet research. Nature picture - First go on a hunt and collect sticks and leaves and flowers and stones or gravel and soil, whatever is freely available in your garden and you are happy for them to collect. Let them arrange it on the patio to form patterns or a picture. This will be an al-fresco art gallery. Do let me know how you get on with these activities, either with your children or grandchildren. We need to encourage our children outside and away from screens and stress and I really hope you’ll have fun too. Selina Botham is an award winning garden designer based in Claygate. “Modifying the
Electronics
of Modern Classic Cars“ COMPETITION BY TED MACAULEY
Every now and then a specialised book to treasure, either for entertainment or instruction, or both, finds its way into our midst and guarantees itself a welcome and prominent place in our display of volumes. And that is the case with Veloce’s superb publication entitled “Modifying the Electronics of Modern Classic Cars”. An impressive paperback of 256 pages and ten chapters, destined to clear up any worries and problems you might suffer if you are determined to pep up and revive your slightly older car’s performance with a level
of expertise passed on from a veritable star of the auto world, Julian Edgar. He offers the complete, step by step , easy-to-follow guide to advancements and improvements to 1990s and 2000s cars, that even an electronic dunce like me find comfortable to follow. It is typically, a finely tuned representative of the rather excellent automotive book publisher, Veloce in their vast list of publications, covering all aspects of motoring and featuring just about every make of car. The latest, aimed specifically at their WorkshopPro (IWorkshopPro) Series, will be a crucial accompaniment to the enthusiast who opts to spend a good deal of time fiddling with his cars in his home workshop and looking for improvements in performance and cutting the running costs. Author Edgar is just about as reliable as they come when it comes down to explaining how to set about giving your prized possession a new lease of life. He explains; ”I have been mechanically modifying my road cars for about 35 years now, doing it first as an enthusiast and then, as a journalist, writing about those modifications. “I’ve got a home workshop with a lathe, mill, bandsaw, welders and loads of other equipment. And it is my belief that the electronic modification of cars beats mechanical modes hands-down for cheapness, ease of work and results. “ And since I consider fuel economy an aspect of performance, I have taken a look at how you can improve it.. For example fitting a dashboard indicator that will allow you to drive more fuel-efficiently, running lean cruise with programmable engine management.”
So there it is: fortyquids-worth of quality instructive upgrading information. And I shall make the book yours for free if you can answer following:

Vote for Hospice in National Film Awards Final!
Princess Alice Hospice has been announced as one of the finalists for the 2019 Charity Film Awards - and is now relying on attracting the most public votes to be declared the People’s Choice winner. Our moving film - Family Time - tells the true story of one family and how the Hospice offered comfort and advice at every stage of their loved one, Sarah’s, illness and death. The film shows how creating memories and sharing special moments with the family is vital to a patient’s wellbeing and how children need and want to be involved.
30 Looklocal Magazine - April 2019
The Charity Film Awards celebrates the effective use of video by the charity sector to change mindsets, raise awareness for the charity or fundraise. The finalists have been through two stages of judging. Some 50,000 people took part in the public voting stage to determine the shortlist. Then the Charity Film Awards panel of expert judges selected the finalists. Family Time is one of seven in its category – ranged according to charity size. “Having got this far, we’d be absolutely delighted to see our touching and powerful film reach the top spot,” said Hospice Head of Communications Julia Russell.
Pictures: Stills from the animated film Family Time
“We now need everyone’s vote to ensure we’re top of People’s Choice – it would mean a huge amount to all of us here at the Hospice as well as our patients, their families and carers.” To see Family Time and cast your vote, visit this link or www.charityfilmawards.com/videos/family-time Family Time was created for the Esher-based Hospice by award-winning animation studio Plastic Milk, based in Kingston. Duncan Raitt, Head of Animation at Plastic Milk said: “Such an emotional story works really well as an animation, as it allows us to tell it in a way live action
wouldn’t. We put a great deal of time and effort into making the film, as we not only wanted to do justice to the family’s story but also to capture the warmth and joyfulness of the Hospice and staff.” Simon Burton, Co-Founder of the Charity Film Awards said: ‘In the digital age, charities’ use of video is fundamental to engage the hearts and minds of their communities. The Finalists are the very best examples of that in action. The winners of the Charity Film Awards 2019 will be announced on 26 April at a gala ceremony in central London.

Compassionate Neighbours celebrate 100th member
Photo: Pictured are Compassionate Neighbour, Fran Reid and Community Member, Rob Hope
Princess Alice Hospice has successfully recruited the first 100 Compassionate Neighbours in its care area - and to celebrate held an event in the middle of Kingston. Tea, coffee, fresh homemade cakes, and balloons marked the festivities at All Saints’ Church, Kingston, on Saturday, where guest speaker Nicki Shaw, CEO of Princess Alice Hospice, Esher, spoke about the scheme. Compassionate Neighbours are trained volunteers offering friendship and a listening ear to people living in their neighbourhood. They might simply pop round for a cuppa and a chat, accompany someone to the shops, library, social club and so on, to help them stay connected to their friends and community. All are part of a network of Compassionate Neighbours. The first 100 Compassionate Neighbours are from various parts of the Hospice care area including

Kingston, Walton, Esher, Surbiton, Richmond, Epsom, Hampton, Molesey, Cobham, Teddington, Leatherhead, Worcester Park and Twickenham. They have all completed their training and are matched with - or soon to be matched with, someone in their neighbourhood who would like support. Loneliness is one of the greatest public health challenges of our time - and community-led support is proving a lifeline for anyone who is living with a long term or terminal illness, is elderly or frail, socially isolated or nearing the end of life through age or illness. The Hospice is always looking for more Compassionate Neighbours and also anyone who could benefit from having a Compassionate Neighbour. The first port of call is to email volunteering@PAH.org.uk or phone 01372 461856.
HOME WANTED! Tabby Cat
Our lovely TabbyCat had been a wandering nomad for many years. He was fed by an elderly lady, who has gone into a nursing home, but otherwise had had no contact with humans. We think he was a domestic kitten who went wandering off when he reached maturity and then lived rough until we took him into care. He is very friendly, loving, content, enjoys cuddles and, in fact, falls asleep in your lap! He also loves catnip toys, he really enjoys his food and loves Dreamies! TabbyCat is about 10 years old, neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped and in good health. He could possibly live with another, older, cat but not with dogs or young children. We would like an experienced cat lover to introduce him to the luxuries of living in a home. If you feel you could give TabbyCat the home with garden that he so richly deserves please ring Sue on 020 8390 3165. Epsom Ewell & District Branch http://www.epsom.cats.org.uk If you cannot adopt a cat but would still like to help us please go to https://www.justgiving.com/Epsom-CatsProtection
As we have around 7,000 cats and kittens in our care at any one time, we will find you the perfect feline friend. www.cats.org.uk Reg Charity 203644 (England and Wales) and SC037711 (Scotland)
