Have you noticed, the dark evenings are gradually fading? Each and every day, we gain over one minute of daylight. Spring is just around the corner and I for one can’t wait! More spring bulbs were planted in my garden last autumn and I am very much looking forward to welcoming their cheery blooms in a few weeks time! Two competitions are included, and these are well worth entering; our Cash Prize Draw, see page 11 for details on this. And do take a peep at page 12 for the chance to win a pair of tickets to attend the ‘Banff Mountain Film Festival’ which brings a high adventure film to G-Live in Guildford and is also showing at The Dorking Halls. If you win, you can select which venue you wish to attend. The scenery is just breath taking and the action, for any skiing enthusiast, is a must see! We are delighted to include information regarding some up-coming Spring and Summer concerts and open days at the magnificent Menuhin Hall, always a treat! As well as this, updates are included from Surrey Police, Elmbridge Volunteers, and information regarding Music on the Green from Christ Church, Esher. We have some great book reviews, a delicious recipe and our popular little music quiz too! I hope there will something of interest for everyone! Wishing you a great month, a Happy Chinese New Year and a Happy Valentine’s Day too! Until next time take care,

This month we caught up with Blair Baker about her experience as a guest with Buy to Let Hunter. Buy to Let Hunter is a niche company offering investors a chance to purchase perfect small properties to rent on a shortterm, serviced basis in the dormitory suburbs. But who, I hear you ask, chooses to stay in a tiny house in Binfield? One of our guests, Blair Baker, recently had a chat with us about her experience as a guest with Buy To Let Hunter. How did you come to be staying in one of our properties? “We sold our house in June, on the very day we put it up for market! We were relocating as a family to the States and for that to happen, my husband needed a visa. Due to Covid his application was delayed. We found ourselves in a total pickle – we were advised to stay in an Airbnb and wait. We had no idea it would be for six months!” How has the experience with BTLH been? “When we found your house in Binfield, we felt so grateful and blessed. We were actually blown away: it was a proper home for us – with a garden for Shadow and a locked shed for us to use for storage.” What would you say to other people in your position? “This has been a major life transition and you have given us the opportunity to have a home, showing us flexibility and genuine Advertising feature

care, giving so much more than a roof over our heads: honestly, it has made all the difference! It provides the perfect stop gap for those who are stuck between life transitions, a true safe place for us to be in the midst of stress and turmoil.” Blair and her family are packing and hopeful to finally make the next step towards a new life together in Massachusetts with flights scheduled and a shiny new visa in hand. “We think we will leave next week – but now we have to take Covid tests, so everything is still somewhat up in the air… it’s like the most suspenseful storyline narrative ever, isn’t it! “Will they stay or will they go?” In the nicest possible way, we hope Blair, Shadow and her family leave for good! The owner of Blair’s serviced and furnished home has been earning twice as much in rental, has the warm fuzzy feeling of providing a much-needed home and has a hassle free, flexible investment. If you would like to read about our other guests or investors to discover more about our business, please do read our series of interviews with them on the website.

Book Reviews FEBRUARY 2022 ‘Middlemarch’ by George Eliot If you’ve never got round to reading this classic, or if you read it years ago, then it’s worth the deep dive. Around the life-defining events of love and marriage are the political, medical and religious tussles of longstanding Middlemarch residents heightened by the arrival of outsiders who dare to encroach with their innovation and strong opinions. Don’t let the length put you off; George Eliot’s writing and the vivacity of her characters will draw you in. Her humour shines out in delightful bon mots and sharp judgements, but pathos and devoted love are there in plenty. ‘Sense and Sensibility’ by Jane Austen It’s easy to think of Jane Austen as a cosy novelist, with everyone she makes us care about happily married at the end of her books. However in Sense and Sensibility she’s daring, speaking plainly about girls ruined by pregnancy outside marriage and bringing one of her characters perilously close to that great risk. The book invites us to consider how much society has changed, and yet with her scalpel wit Austen reminds us that while society changes, some fools will always be with us. Dancing with Mr Robert Ferrars and listening to his self-important drivel, the reader will never forget how “Elinor agreed to it all, for she did not think he deserved the compliment of rational opposition.” ‘Orlando’ by Virginia Woolf Orlando lives many lives: sometimes male, sometimes female, always searching for passion and adventure. From Elizabethan England to Imperial Turkey and into the modern age, this is a novel which carries us through the centuries, from one love to the next, exploring the nature of history, gender, and the search for happiness.

How secure are you???? Almost daily our customers tell us about their fears and concerns about being forced into a digital world, where they do not have the knowledge nor interest to ensure they are fully protected. We have created a few simple checks for your protection. 1: Never click on a link within an email you have received- the email may purport to be from your bank but the scammers may be mimicking their appearance, and the link will take you to the scammers website where they ask you for your bank’s login credentials. 2: When you go to a secure website you should see a padlock logo in the address bar- like this and usually followed by the https, indicating the website has the https://www.tecres.co.uk/ highest level of security. 3: Ensure your computer is using uptodate software, Windows 10 or 11, Mac 10.15 or newer. If you use MS Office the version needs to be newer than 2016. 4: Ensure you have a paid for Internet Security program on your machine, like Webroot, Bullguard, Norton or Kasperski. 5: NEVER use the same password for all your online activities. In recent years there have been some significant data breaches from the likes of British Airways, EasyJet, Yahoo, Facebook, Adobe, Linkedin and Hilton Hotels, where millions of customers records have been taken - if your user name and password were the same for any of these, then the hackers could have access to your data. Now you might, correctly, say “why does it matter that someone has your Easyjet account details?” In isolation it may not be very significant, but you may have stored your credit or bankers details on their system, and more significantly they will have your user name and password. This isn’t scaremongering, it is reality.

What can you do to protect yourself? There is a useful website named www.haveibeenpwned.com. By putting in your email address it will tell you how many recorded breaches of your email address have been recorded. If you try this random email address johnsmith@hotmail.com, it will tell you it has been compromised on 92 occasions and where this compromise came from. If you have been pwned what can you do? Change your email password twice in a week, and ensure your new password is not similar to the old one, ensure it has numbers, upper, lower case letters, and punctuation symbols in it. Try to have a different password for your major activities like email, shopping websites, finance websites. We realise that trying to remember all these passwords is close to impossible, so we have a solution to this, for £55.00 per year we can provide you with a corporate/ military grade password keeping program, where only you can see the details stored. This will work on your PC, Mac, smart phone and tablet. Please do ask for further information. As apart of our Total Care Support package we get asked to help recover users accounts details, or where their accounts have been hacked. In most cases we are successful, but can’t be guaranteed.

This guide was written by Les Beer, from Tecres in Leatherhead, who have been providing computer solutions since 1989.

Lunchtime & Evening Concerts Christ Church, Esher

Wednesday 16th Feb 2022 THE SZASZ TRIO Petr Limonov - piano Jaga Klimaszewska - violin Austen Scully - cello

Our February Concert will be performed by three young but exceptional players. The quote below sets the tone. “Peter Limonov is one of the finest pianists and musicians I have had the honour of playing with and hearing. His profound sensitivity is extremely rare, his musical intelligence is of the highest degree and his pianistic power is formidable. Petr is one of the most enlightened musical souls I have come across.” Nicola Benedetti The highly talented Jaga and Austen provide excellent accompaniment. Chevrolet CORVETTE C8

CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

American cars, too big, bulky and flashy for my liking, have never been anywhere near my list of desirables - but all that has dramatically and welcomingly changed with the exciting, updated, uprated and superbly presented Chevrolet Corvette C8, a winner if ever there was one. This new baby is the eighth generation and it has been dramatically changed from its predecessors. The engine has been moved behind the driver for the first time - and it is available on the British market with a righthand drive version just to throw every other fancy sports car rival into a panic. This handsome and racy looking beast of burden, handles like a well-behaved, only too eager to please, responder to your rightfoot demands, and capability behind its impressive steering wheel. Its newly placed rear engine transmits its responsibility to its four chunky wheels without giving its lucky and grateful driver a split second of concern. What any owner does have to put up with, is the constant, envious stare from the

24 Looklocal Magazine - February 2022

gawkers, who retire to bed to dream of being seen smoothing its path along either a motorway or a winding country lane with a showoff burst of breathtaking acceleration or a humming easy-paced slow-motion crawl. There is a vast expanse of sports cars at three times the price of the Corvette - and it does not fall back at being out-priced: far from it! This winner, low-slung and stunning, either in convertible or coupe style, rejoices in a 6.2-litre, 475bhp V8 engine built to give utter satisfaction for a reasonable delve into your bank account. So...how much? Answer: £74,200. Surprised? I most certainly was when, swallowing hard and eyes closed, I asked the price. Why, I wonder, would anybody want to pay more when your hard-earned rewards you with a gorgeous beauty that could excitingly carry you along Europe’s no-limit auto-ways at 184mph and all as steady as a rock? I must cite the designer Tom Peters for putting such a treat on our planet.

Voices annual creative writing competition for children in care and young care leavers now open

Coram Voice launches its seventh annual edition of Voices, the creative writing competition for children in care and young care leavers across the country. The competition, sponsored by UK management consultancy Cadence Innova*, will be open for entries until 28 February 2022. Coram Voice, a charity that ensures the voices of children and young people in and around the care system are heard, first launched the competition in 2016 as a platform for careexperienced young people to express their creative talents and to build understanding of their experiences. Since then, the competition has grown year-on-year, with some young finalists going on to write pieces for national media titles. The theme of this year’s competition is ‘This is Me’ and entries can be in any written form including poems, short stories, raps or newspaper articles, with a 500-word limit. There are four age categories: primary school (5-10), lower secondary school (age 11-14), upper secondary school (age 15-17) and care

26 Looklocal Magazine - February 2022

leavers (age 18-25). Entries will be judged by an expert panel of authors and poets, some of whom are care experienced. The judges are due to be announced shortly, alongside a group of young judges who were finalists in previous years of the competition. Brigid Robinson, Managing Director of Coram Voice, said: “We are delighted to open the 2022 edition of the Voices creative writing competition. When we launched this competition in 2016, we had no idea that it would turn into such an important and valuable creative opportunity for care experienced children and young people across the country. Every time I hear that one of our previous finalists has gone to achieve their goals, whether it’s continuing to write, going to university or getting a job they love, it’s reminds me why this competition exists.” Entries can be submitted online at coramvoice.org.uk/voices until 28 February 2022. For more info on the competition, please visit coramvoice.org.uk/voices.

Domestic Abuse What can we do, what can you do, & what do you know?

ANGELA CHRISTIE, 13227 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR ELMBRIDGE

Crime Prevention, it’s not only our homes, our cars, our possessions we seek to protect, what about ourselves, friends and family? Domestic Abuse is a crime. It’s not always physical, it can be emotional, financial, sexual, coercive and controlling behaviours. It can also be all of these things and more. It is not normal to live in fear of being hurt. We know it is happening but what do we do? The police take reports of Domestic Abuse seriously and can help in a number of ways to safeguard the victim within their own home. Sanctuary Scheme is one example, where several professional agencies will work together. The agencies will look at what security measures can be put in place within the victim’s home, to keep them and their family safe. Police do have door braces and window alarms which can be handed over to the victim. These are temporary measures however, longer term security measures will need to be considered. Not every report results in prosecution but every report is dealt with sensitively and with the victim at the centre of the process. The first step, is asking what help and support is out there. Have you heard of the Domestic Violence

Disclosure Scheme? Any concerned person can contact the police and explain the reason they want a D.V.D.S. If you have embarked on a new relationship or a friend/family member has, it does not even have to be new. There just needs to be a genuine fear for the safety of an individual and the police can talk you through the procedure. There are services to speak to, OUTREACH, who are at the end of a phone to listen to what you are experiencing. They can support and offer guidance with questions around finances, housing options, non-molestation orders and child contact, to mention a few. Domestic Violence agencies are there to support men and women who are experiencing domestic abuse. MANKIND is, as the name suggests for men experiencing domestic abuse. There are other support agencies out there MENDADVICELINE is another, EQUATION deal with stalking related concerns, as do PALADIN and SUZY LAMPLUGH TRUST. Domestic abuse can be directed towards parents by their children, or between siblings too. The first step is making the decision to reach out, from there help can be offered.

Peeling Back The Layers I was out for a brisk walk on an icy morning, looking forward to enjoying the beauty of the woods, clearing my thoughts and re-energising my body. Something scratched at the tender skin of my waist. The stitching of my T-shirt label was rubbing against me. At first it was just annoying and I could shut it out of my mind. But the further I went, the more tender that spot became and the harder it was to stop thinking about it. The trouble was, to sort it out, I would have to unzip a thick padded coat, a body warmer, a sweatshirt, and stick my icy fingers up the T-shirt. In the freezing cold! I tried to ignore the discomfort.

at the very least, our relationship deserved a frank conversation. I phoned him. I outlined the facts as I saw them and said I’d been feeling disappointed and let down. I said I liked him and had always valued his work, but that I no longer felt I could trust him. I asked him how he saw things. He thanked me for my courage in bringing up the issue. He apologised. He said that was not the way he behaved and not what he’d built his reputation on. We talked openly and honestly. At the end, I felt so much better, he was aware of the impact of his actions, and our relationship was saved.

In the end, though, I was thinking more about the irritation than about the walk itself. I wasn’t taking in the beauty of my surroundings because of this ‘thorn’ in my side. And that really bothered me. When the disappointment of this joyless walk was greater than the temporary discomfort I would feel peeling open the layers to fix the problem, I was ready to take action.

What are the thorns in your side? Are you trying to ignore grievances or avoid difficult conversations?

We all walk around ruminating on small annoyances. We try to ignore them but they fester and spoil our peace of mind, our productivity, our relationships, our sense of joy and even our wellbeing.

Take time to talk,

Recently, I made a difficult phone call. For months, I’d been feeling let down by a service provider I’d known for many years. I liked him. He’d really helped me. But on three occasions, what seemed to me to be avoidable delays and lack of communication had caused me a lot of stress, and I wondered if I should look for a replacement. The loss of trust bothered me. I decided that
