Welcome to September!
Well! That was a slightly underwhelming summer, weather wise, wasn’t it? I hope many of you managed to have some time off to relax and catch up with friends and family over the past weeks despite the mixed bag of weather! It’s so good to finally be able to include some lovely local events for you this month! There is a fabulous Book Fair taking place early this month on 4th September, also on offer CD’s and DVD’s so if you fancy some value for money entertainment, it might be worth a visit - details on page 21. Also great to see that the Oxshott & Cobham Music Festival team will be back in action! They are presenting a ‘Mini Music Festival’ this year with 3 concerts in one week! They also provide information on events running through until March 22. How exciting! I was contacted recently by a local family who are appealing for support for the Kent Sussex & Surrey Air Ambulance, who recently came to the rescue of their daughter Madi when she was involved in a serious accident. Read their story on page 31 and find out how you can donate to this amazing charity. You never know, you may need their help one day too! Wishing all the local students a very happy and safe start/return to schools, colleges and Universities this term. Here’s hoping it will be a more settled year for you all. With Warmest Regards, until next time,
Ros

Michael Iskas - viola Inigo Mikeleiz Berrade - accordion We are delighted to introduce our Autumn season with an unusual but very successful pairing of instruments designed to give both pleasure and provide a new musical experience. These young artistes, from Greece and Spain respectively, met in 2015 at the Royal Academy of Music. Their combination of viola and accordion is based on both instruments having a surprising amount in common. Both are able to sustain sound for a long time and vary its colour and intensity. The duo aim to take their audience on a journey through space and time, with a programme reflecting the dances, rhythms and songs from around the world. This has been well received at the Wigmore Hall, St. Martin’s in the Fields, St James’s, Piccadilly and many other prestigious venues.
Free entry and light lunch from 12.30pm. Concert from 1.15pm. Retiring collection. This event also will be available on YouTube, search ”MOTG Esher”. Online donations can be made via

Inspiration!
Get Out Of Your Way! Some years ago, I successfully completed a charity fire walk – a bare-foot walk on red-hot burning embers of 800-1000 degrees Fahrenheit. A few years later, I was at a large event where we were split into small groups to do arrow breaking. I had to push my throat against a metal-tipped arrow so that it would either go through my throat - or break. Have you ever done anything that really scared you? What were you thinking?? Of the two, arrow breaking took the most nerve. Burning my feet wasn’t quite so dire a thought as having blood gush out of my throat. Both were an exercise in mindset, commitment and the power of motivation. Since I wasn’t going to chicken out, the only way out was through (fortunately, in this case, through the challenge, not through my throat!). You have to be 100% focused, 100% committed to succeed, and once you start, you have to keep moving.
Our thinking is critical! I always end my showers with a 30-second blast of ice-cold water. It’s non-negotiable. If I were to think about the cold water ahead of time, I would be wasting the deliciousness of the hot shower while I was under it. I don’t torture myself with “Shall I? Shan’t I? I could skip it today (and tomorrow …”). That would be to suffer the discomfort in my imagination before it had happened. I don’t need to spoil my enjoyment and I don’t need to psych myself up. I turn the temperature control down without thinking about it. What would you be able to achieve that you aren’t achieving now if you could get in the mindset of “I’m going to do this thing no matter what”? And what are you spoiling in the present moment by dreading something that has yet to happen? Take charge of your mind. Make it do what you want it to do, and don’t let it spoil the things you can enjoy.
When we decide to try something new or aim for a big goal, we usually have voices in our head telling us how difficult or dangerous it will be, urging us not to bother, warning us against trying and failing, against looking stupid or ruining our reputation, against getting hurt. Those voices aren’t the truth, they are just our fear. If we listen to them, we can easily give up and stay small. So we have to get out of our own way.
You can do this!!
The good news is that when we step out of our comfort zone and break through our limiting beliefs in one area of life, we can then do so more easily in other areas.

Still they come… It has been widely reported that during the lockdown the scammers and fraudsters have become even more active, and they are constantly innovating new plausible ways of gaining your trust to gain access to your personal, bank or credit card details. For example we have heard of a wide variety of Vaccine related scams, where you might receive a text or email purporting to be from the UK Government, it asks you to click on a provided link then takes you to an authentic looking gov.uk website then asks for a variety of details, and your credit card details. Clicking on any link contained in an email can divert you to the scammers website where they request your personal information, which will become valuable to them over time. We do have PC and Mac software which will alert you (and block your access) if the website you are being diverted to is not legitimate. There has also been an increase in travel related scams- supposedly from someone you know who is stranded in a foreign land and needs money to get home. The following steps to avoid being scammed may be useful: While scammers’ delivery methods and messaging can quickly change, a few basic security measures can help protect you from the latest and most common scams: • Be sceptical when someone contacts you. Scammers can spoof calls and emails to make it look like they are coming from different sources, including government agencies, charities, banks and large companies. Don’t share personal information, usernames or passwords that others can use to steal your identity. • Research companies. Before you make a purchase or donation, take a few minutes to review the company. Do a web search for its name plus “scam” or “reviews” and research charities on https://www.charitynavigator. org/ and https://www.charitywatch.org/. • Be careful with your phone. If you suspect a spam call, don’t respond or press a button. The safest option is to hang up or ignore the call entirely. You can always look up the organization and initiate a call yourself if you’re worried there may actually be an issue. • Don’t refund or forward overpayments. Be careful whenever a company or person asks you to refund or forward part of a payment. Often, the original payment will be fraudulent and taken back later. • Look for suspicious payment requirements. Scammers often ask for payments via bank or wire transfer, cryptocurrency or gift cards. These payments can be harder to track and cancel than other forms of payment, which can leave you stuck without recourse. None of this is intended to scare you or make you nervous- just exercise caution, try not to rush when carrying out requested tasks. Where possible do not follow web links that are enclosed within an email, search and locate the destination websites yourself.
Local support and help when you need it We provide for the computing needs of thousands of local home and business users - just like you, we would love to discuss your needs and requirements. We specialise in talking English, but if you wish to talk “techie” we can do that too. Please feel free to get in contact.

Morgan PLUS 4 CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY
If ever there was a handsome, charming and delightful car the Morgan Plus 4 is it. And it gets my enthusiastic backing with all the eagerness I can muster. No kidding... The 111-year-old company, tucked away discreetly in the Malvern Hills, has linked the olde world of veteran cars on the outside, with a thoroughly excellent service of technology at its best and most serviceable beneath a profile as sportily attractive as can be. It is the epitome of British excellence! An attention seeker if ever there was one, destined to leave the green-eyed amongst us gawping and envying its owners. I am sorry if I appear to be going over the top, but I cannot disguise my admiration and enthusiasm when 1950s craftsmanship links so perfectly with 2020s engineering expertise. And the result is as fine as this. If I win the National Lottery I shall be speeding to the nearest sales office, as fast as I dare, to buy one. What would be awaiting me would be a BMW-engined, 2-litre, 4-cylinder turbo charger, capable of hitting 0-62mph in 5.2 seconds with a 255 bhp boost. Phew! And all in the open air, hood folded away, with
26 Looklocal Magazine - September 2021
the breeze straightening your curls and pinking your cheeks. The ride too, is a real treat, with double wishbone suspension smoothing out those nasty bumps. The manual six speed gearbox comes courtesy of BMW - but please, please, don’t make the mistake of imagining this little beauty has been diluted by its German makers. The car is steadfastly, traditionally, English and independent. A handmade frame of ash, swooping, sporty, and shapely, with double-wishbone suspension, all borne along on a lightweight aluminium chassis. Overall, thanks to the painstaking efforts by those deep thinking and clever geniuses at headquarters, the new Morgan plus 4 charmer, handles better than ever — and that’s saying something when its long history has been severely tested. And gawping down that louvered bonnet will lift your spirits every time you squeeze behind the wheel and wave back to all the admirers who shout their hellos. Not that you are allowed to do it in the UK, but the car swanks with a top speed of 149mph. Not cheap at £66,430...but wow, what a wee joy.

DO YOU KNOW ABOUT OUR CHARITY? The Ashford and St Peter’s Charitable Fund Nicola Oliver, Fundraising Manager at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust The Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals Charity comprises 66 individual funds, and focuses on improving the experience of patients, their families/carers, and staff at ASPH by enhancing the hospitals and providing supplementary equipment to benefit patients and staff. Throughout the pandemic, the Charity has been fortunate to have received several large donations and grants from the Captain Sir Tom Moore Fund (managed by NHS Charities Together), and this is how we used them: We created an outdoor/indoor area with a retracting awning and bistro style furniture. It’s been a great hit and our staff can relax and unwind, before and after shifts or during their breaks. Thanks to a private donor from Weybridge, the staff canteen was opened for an extra three hours each The relaxing area for our staff and volunteers at St. evening providing Peter’s Hospital free, hot, nutritious meals for our team during the first three weeks of the pandemic. The Tom Moore fund enabled this initiative to continue until the end of May 2020. • Patients were given newspapers and iPads, keeping them in touch with their loved ones and the outside world.
WAYS OF HELPING: There are many ways you can support the Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals Charity and raise awareness amongst the Weybridge community. FOR MORE DETAILED INFORMATION:

KSS
AIR AMBULANCE CHARITY KENT SURREY SUSSEX
Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS) is always ready to provide world-class, fast-response, emergency medical care every hour of every day. Their missions have saved thousands of lives which is only possible thanks to their amazing supporters. It costs more than £15 million a year to sustain their world leading, cutting edge, innovative service, 88% of which is donated or raised by the people of Kent, Surrey and Sussex. Last year alone, they were called out to help over 2,500 people in life-threatening conditions. People like Madi, from Claygate, Surrey, who was just two-and-a-half years old when she was kicked by a passing horse. Madi’s mum Jen, has shared her story to help raise awareness of KSS. “I was shocked when I first saw Madi’s facial injuries and the blood, but I knew that I had to remain calm for our baby girl. I cradled her in my arms, while we waited for help to arrive. I don’t remember at what point the air ambulance landed, but I remember feeling a huge sense of relief that Madi was in the best hands. The KSS crew spent about 20 minutes on scene assessing Madi’s injuries and deciding what immediate care
she needed. Then they moved Madi and her daddy to the helicopter and flew them to St George’s, arriving 12 minutes later. KSS provide life-saving, specialist critical care at the roadside and have saved thousands of lives like Madi’s. They were there for me and my family at a time when we so urgently needed help, and for that we’ll be forever thankful. Sadly, Madi suffered several facial fractures and damage to her right eye. She’s had four surgeries over the past year. We’ve been advised Madi still has a long road ahead and is likely to have many surgeries until her face is fully grown. It’s now a year on since that horrific day, and I’m so pleased to say Madi is recovering really well. Her eye remains our main concern and Madi has had to get glasses recently. I want to do all I can to raise awareness and much needed funds for KSS so when the worst happens to other families, they will be there to provide their very best care”. You can read Madi’s full story and find out more about the charity and their life-saving work by visiting aakss.org.uk.
