hen John and Anne Lahiffe retired from their busy jobs they finally felt able to undertake the building project that they’d planned to do for years, contracting Lofts and Extensions to complete a stunning kitchen extension. The Lahiffes became aware of L&E because they’d seen several projects locally, as well as magazine advertising. “We went to see some properties that L&E had worked on in our area and all of the owners were really happy with L&E,” remembers Anne. John adds, “Their work ethic once they started was incredible. They were always here before 8am and worked a full day.” Budgeting for a building project can be tricky but the Lahiffes liked the organisation of L&E. “With their system you know exactly where you stand

financially and there’s something very reassuring about that,” explains John. “The payment schedule means you know exactly what you are going to pay for and when, so there are no money issues.” Once the work began, the flexibility of the builders was something that impressed the Lahiffes. “Anything that we asked them to do, they just got on with it. The foreman was a great guy and they were all very, very polite” says Anne. “It’s changed the whole way we live - we don’t go in our lounge much anymore,” smiles Anne. “Everybody just comes straight through into here now and all our friends agree what a huge change it’s made to the house. You couldn’t have imagined that such a small bit of space could make such a difference, but it really has.” The Lahiffes are so happy with the work L&E did, they’ve already recommended them to friends.

From the Editor Welcome to Look Local in June!

Oh no, it’s raining today! I’m not very happy about that! But the upside is that my patches of grass seed in the garden will grow now, hopefully. I know, I know, the plants and the ducks like the rain,

ight local artists will be exhibiting their work in the stable, conservatory and garden at Rose Cottage Stables, 46, West End Lane, Esher, KT10 8LA. Their artwork ranges from painting and ceramics to woodturning, stained glass and sculpture. Sculptress Alison Catchlove is well know at Wisley RHS for her quirky, humorous bird, bug and flower sculptures in metal. The sculpture of Janet Stanley reflects an interest in mythology and natural forms, a subject which Rosalind Moysen’s paintings also explore, using the textural quality of oil and mixed media to convey semi-abstract impressions of trees and landscape. Farida Khan-Evans’ still life and abstract paintings push the boundaries, with a mixture of media such as textiles, metal, photography and paint, whereas Sarah Jane Vickery’s

12 Looklocal Magazine - June 2015

watercolour, ink and mixed media paintings have a focus on drawing. Beryl Hole will be showing delicate cut-away porcelain, strong stoneware and naked Raku ceramics. Jane Drown also works in ceramics, producing paper-thin textured vases and vessels inspired by the sea. She also works in stained glass on commission. Roger Marsden is an artistic woodturner who loves transforming the simple beauty of wood into finely-grained bowls, pots, peppergrinders and candlesticks. There will be demonstrations of welding, woodturning and painting. The exhibition starts on the weekend of 6th and 7th June and continues for the next 2 weeks on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, to finish on 21st June. It will open from 11 am to 5pm. Entry free. Dogs, bicycles and children welcome.

AWARD-WINNING LOCAL GARDEN DESIGNER SELINA BOTHAM

LOOKS AT THE THORNY ISSUE OF GARDEN MAINTENANCE

Garden maintenance sounds horrid and no wonder people think they don’t like it! This, coupled with a lack of knowledge & time, can create confusion and dread. However, it’s interesting how a beautifully designed garden suddenly makes gardening a pleasure & maintenance doesn’t feel like such a nasty chore. That said…. I do often design gardens with minimal maintenance in mind & here are my top tips for keeping maintenance down:-

1 2 3 4 5 6

Design some areas in your garden to be almost labour-free. Include blocks of tough perennials that will only need cutting back once a year. Once established, they will stop weeds from growing. Don’t leave bare earth: garden plants will cover the soil & stop weeds getting a foothold. It really is pointless fluffing up bare soil, as this just invites weed seeds to germinate, & of course this leads to lots more work. Don’t plant trees or shrubs that will get too big for their allotted space. A shrub that wants to be 3 metres high & wide will need a lot of unnecessary maintenance if you plant it just below a window. If you have a tree that needs regular tree surgery, the chances are that it’s the wrong tree for that position. Instead, save yourself the time &/or money & replant it with a tree that will be the right size for that space. Consider the position of the plant and soil type & choose plants that will grow well there. If a plant is happy, it will need much less attention. A lawn is actually the most labour-intensive part of the garden, as it needs attention nearly every week! However, because grass is easy to mow,

many people overlook how labour-intensive it is. A metal edge around your lawn will make it easier to keep the edges neat, & if you can learn to love your lawn flowers, you will see a reduction in maintenance effort, as you won’t need to weed or feed or scarify. Cut back big shrubs hard & decisively once a year after flowering, so you are not constantly working on them (& you won’t cut off all the flower buds before they flower.) I recommend taking out one in three stems at the base to keep a natural-looking shape, then trimming some of the remaining branches back by about a third. Avoid roses, wisteria & annual bedding plants, especially hanging baskets. Also fruit trees & veg. plots create lots of work, so are best avoided if you want to keep maintenance down. However, remember the fun & satisfaction that gardening can bring & so don’t just think about cutting down on maintenance. Selina Botham is an award-winning garden designer based in Claygate. LATER THIS YEAR THE MUCH HERALDED WINDOWS 10 WIL BE RELEASED

The holiday season will soon be in full swing, and for some people who run a business or just need to remain in touch with those back home, this can present difficulties. We have detailed here a few of the most useful and common solutions we have provided to help you overcome these difficulties. Ensuring you have your information where it is required can be a challenge. We have a product called Briefcase which synchronises all your data across all your devices, be they PC, Mac, tablet or smartphone. Additionally, all data is fully backed up and we store the last 31 versions of your files. This is very useful should you have a file that you are working on and need to revert to an earlier version. The cost of Briefcase is only £70.00 per year and is installed in minutes. If you need a highly portable device to permit access to your information and emails, a tablet may well provide the answer. There are all kinds of tablets on the market currently, with the Apple iPad being the most dominant. Whilst the iPad is good at so many things, it doesn’t really work that well with many work-related programs such as Word and Excel. We feel a much better solution is the Windows tablet range. They include Microsoft Office, and with prices starting at £90 for a 7” tablet, they offer great value and a fabulous solution. The Acer Switch comes with a removable keyboard and a 10” display and is a true hybrid of a tablet and a notebook for £335 - again, this price includes MS Office (see opposite page for further information). Should you wish to extend the running time of your mobile device, we have external powerbanks which can keep a phone, tablet, or in some cases a laptop, fully charged for many days. These prices start at £15.

ten year old schoolboy from Claygate, Esher, will next month aim to become one of the youngest climbers to summit the 19,341ft peak of Mount Kilimanjaro in a bid to raise thousands of pounds for charity. Sam Irving, a pupil at Esher-based Milbourne Lodge School, is hoping to complete the 4-mile ascent in just four days. Mt Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. On a good day, you can see more of the rest of the planet from its snow-clad peaks than from anywhere else on earth, including Mt Everest. The expedition will set off from the Machame Gate, following one of the steepest routes up the mountain and encompassing the precipitous Barranco Wall. Night-time temperatures are expected to fall to below -20C during parts of the climb and the ascent to the summit itself involves a 12-hour trek, starting shortly before midnight. Because of the risk of acute altitude sickness,

22 Looklocal Magazine - June 2015

F O R

C H A R I T Y

Tanzanian authorities impose a strict age ban, restricting permits to climbers over the age of ten. Sam has been interested in climbing for years and his ultimate ambition is to summit Everest. “I recently met my hero, the explorer David Hempleman-Adams and asked him for some advice, but he said ‘Don’t do it!’ To be honest, I’m not sure whether he was joking or not”, said Sam. The schoolboy is part of an expedition organized by his mother, Ros, aiming to raise funds for the Haller Foundation. The team is hoping to raise £25,000, which will provide safe drinking water, sanitation and an irrigation system for a remote village in rural Kenya. The climbers have paid for all costs related to the trip themselves, so that 100% of the funds raised will go to Haller. As part of his own fund-raising efforts, Sam is producing a special school newsletter, baking cakes and washing cars. If you would like to donate towards the group’s £25,000 fund-raising target, the website for donations is: https://mydonate. bt.com/fundraisers/capacityclimbers

‘The Seven Ages of Tax Planning’- Adult

This is part of our series of articles discussing tax planning at certain periods of life. Adult This article looks at some tax planning opportunities which are generally available to all adults regardless of whether they are married, in business or employed or propertyowners. The special opportunities for different circumstances will be covered in later articles. ISAs ISAs are probably the best known ‘tax break’ of them all. Anyone can pay in up to £15,000 this tax year into an ISA. Investments held in an ISA are free of capital gains tax and income tax (although there is no repayment of the tax credit on dividends). With a contribution to an ISA each year a substantial fund can be built-up outside the income tax and capital gains tax nets. Pension contributions This is the other big almost universal tax break. Anyone under 75 can pay up to a total of £2,880 into a personal pension, even if they have no income or even are already in an employer’s pension scheme. If they have earnings and no employer’s pension scheme then they can pay in up to the amount of their earnings subject to a limit, generally £40,000. The pension fund has tax relief added to it (so a contribution of £2,880 becomes £3,600). Further, for any higher-rate taxpayer, there is additional tax relief. The pension fund does not pay tax on the income and capital gains it makes. On taking the pension (between 55 and 75) up to 25% of the fund can be taken as a (currently) tax-free lump sum and the rest used to provide a flexible income which is subject to income tax.

Gift Aid Any gifts you make to charity could be under Gift Aid (unless you are not a tax payer). This enables the charity to claim back tax on the gift, effectively increasing it by 25%. In addition,higher-rate taxpayers can claim further tax relief themselves – 25% of the gift for 40% taxpayers and 31.25% for 45% taxpayers. EISs, Seed EISs and VCTs These are special tax reliefs offered to investors in smaller, and therefore often riskier, companies. Needless to say, the rules are complex, but the general position is that you get tax back on your investment, 30% for VCTs and EISs and 50% for SEISs. Provided the investment is held for three years (five for VCTs) this tax relief is permanent. On top of this, there is no capital gains tax on any sale proceeds after the investment has been held for three years. With an EIS you can also roll-over a capital gain made on another asset within three years before and one year after the investment, effectively deferring the tax. For SEIS, this is a complete exemption for a gain made during this current tax year, up to half the investment can be used – making the tax break one at 64% for the right circumstances. Inheritance Tax Reliefs Any gifts you make to individuals totalling £3,000 in any tax year are IHT-free, as are any gifts you make out of surplus income. But probably much more important is the fact that any gifts you make are normally ignored after seven years. A good programme of gifts during your lifetime can greatly reduce the eventual inheritance tax. O f co urse, any o f these steps have to be do ne co rrectly to ensure they have the desired tax advantages.

OLLOWING the announcement that the UK has become the first country to provide a revolutionary new Meningitis B vaccine to babies, leading UK meningitis charity, Meningitis Now is urging people not to become complacent but to remain vigilant for the signs and symptoms of the disease. Bexsero, which protects against the UK’s most common form of bacterial meningitis, will be free to babies on the NHS childhood vaccination schedule. Initially, the vaccine will only be given to babies from two months old, with follow-up boosters. Whilst this is good news, it means that the present generation of older children, teenagers and adults is still very much at risk from the disease. Surrey Community Ambassadors for Meningitis Now, Alice and Bryan Austin, lost their daughter Gillian to the disease in 2004. Alice said: “Having experienced the loss of our 31 year old daughter and her baby (she was 28 weeks pregnant) to meningitis, I know how ill-informed the public is about the disease. It is not,

L I V E S

G

as widely believed, a disease that only affects babies, children and students. Meningitis can kill or maim anyone at any age.” The UK has one of the world’s highest Meningitis B rates, killing more of the country’s under-fives than any other infectious disease. One in 10 people dies and at least one in three survivors suffers lifelong after-effects, including limb loss, brain damage, epilepsy, deafness and blindness. There is no vaccine to protect against all types of meningitis, and so, if meningitis is suspected, it is vital that you remain vigilant, trust your instincts and seek urgent medical help. Meningitis Now, a UK charity working to save lives and rebuild the futures of people affected by meningitis through research, support and awareness, offers free wallet-sized signs and symptoms cards and phone apps. To answer that, I thought I should compile a monthly listing of my most-played classic album and my favourite current album. Although Sam Smith’s ‘In The Lonely Hours’ first saw the light of day about a year ago, it still resonates with me as one of the finest recordings of recent times. Just 21, Sam sings with a purity and sublime beauty rarely heard in these times of bland ballads & wishy-washy cover versions. Sam is anything but bland. He sings from the soul & is surrounded by excellent musicians, producers & arrangers who’ve created a multi-award winning album born of a broken heart, as with so many great loves songs. Altogether a lovely recording, dwelling on the quieter moments in life, best enjoyed with the lights down low. My classic album of the month comes from the late Harry Nilsson, or just Nilsson as he became best known. In 1973, he released ‘A Little Tough of Nilsson in the Night’ which features his version of American classics or 20th century standards as they are often called. Released long before Rod Stewart struck gold with his collections of music for crooners, Harry gathered notables like Frank Sinatra’s arranger & the Beatles press officer, Derek Taylor, who produced it. It’s one of those albums that never fails to generate questions at parties, such as ‘wow, who are we listening to?’ & ‘what a wonderful collection of tunes!’ which includes ‘Thanks for the Memory’, ‘Over The Rainbow’ & ‘It’s Only A Paper Moon’. I got to know Harry Nilsson when he once called me out of the blue & invited me to have lunch with him. He told me that after seeing me on TV, I reminded him of a younger version of himself & he wanted me not to be tempted by rock ‘n’ roll excesses as he felt he had been. I assured him that I was born to be mild not wild (much the pity), & that I would treasure his advice. We shared an unforgettable meal & ever since, I’ve always taken a special interest in his recordings, of which ‘ALTNN’ is an outstanding example. Priceless!

The coincidental arrival of sunshine and a drop-top Beetle Cabrio from Volkswagen could not have been more timely, as I planned to head for a family get-together Wittering way. I skipped the motorway and instead breezed the old A3 countryside-view route, as pretty and picturesque a trek as you could want, with plenty of opportunity to test the VW’s many roadholding attributes. The car is its own silent witness, pulled along to upwards of 100mph, with nippy dashes by a whisperer of an engine smoothed to perfection off the back of long experience. Since Nazi despot Adolf Hitler urged the company to build a valuefor-the-pfennig people’s car and it made its debut in 1938, with some of his own design ideas in place, around 25million have been sold worldwide. It was then badged the “Kafer” - English for Beetle - and when it was introduced in small numbers into the UK in 1952 by Colborne Garages - now Lookers - in Guildford and Walton-on-Thames, it began its iconic existence for us.

My treat was to play catch-up, hood down and cosy going, hood up and cool coming back, with great views of rustic, green and hilly Surrey etc from the Cabrio’s panoramic windows front and side. It is a car that oozes satisfaction, a relaxer, uniquely stylish, and nowadays nowhere near the tin-can rattling noise machine of yesteryear. The body may roll a wee bit around the tighter corners, but not enough to have your passengers biting their nails, and on the straighter bits and motorways, it is immaculately behaved and the fabric roof does its duty in staving off any wind and road noise. When you wake up to the fine retro styling, the superbly equipped cabin and comfort level of the seating for four people, all at a price under £20,000, you realise you are

enjoying one of the best value droptops of them all. Better yet, those experts who eye the motor market and advise buyers reckon you should and could haggle the asking price down to around £17,500. For the likes of Trophy Wife, a natural-born and shamelessly cold-eyed negotiator, that would be a matter of course. For the shrinking violet likes of me, it is a heaven-sent tip. Economy-wise, and with a superbly performing 1.2-litre turbo-charged engine which is both punchy when the right foot makes its demands and smoothly efficient in the longer unhurried motorway moments, it is lightly demanding on the purse or wallet. I enjoyed our all-too-brief companionship more than I have done for a good while with any similarly equipped car. VW? Very Worthy... This Cabrio is drop-head gorgeous. Great idea of yours, Adolf. Specification: VW Beetle 1.2 TSI 105. Speed 111mph. 0-62 mph 11.7 secs. MPG 46.3. Price £19,010.
