Another lovely idea for a summer treat is a traditional Afternoon Tea. We visited Oatlands Park Hotel recently to see exactly how it should be done. The Christian Science Reading Room has recently had a fabulous refurbishment. Included is an update and you can see how lovely it now looks! We are delighted to welcome a selection of new businesses to our pages this month too. I hope you find our magazine a helpful reference when looking for services locally. If you would like to advertise your business, please do not hesitate to get in touch. I would be very pleased to hear from you. We are now taking bookings for September and beyond. That’s about it for now. We are off on our travels in August but we look forward to bringing you more local news in September … Wishing you all a lovely summer, stay safe and have fun ! AFTERNOON TEA This was, without a doubt, the highlight of our weekend and we had such a wonderful time. The hotel itself is steeped in royal history. Its magnificent grounds were originally the site of a grand Tudor palace built by Henry VIII in 1538. Over the centuries, the house and grounds have been rebuilt and re-modeled several times and in different styles by a string of wealthy tenants. Oatlands Park opened as a hotel for the first time in 1856. The South Western Hotel, as it was then known, played host to a number of world-famous guests, including writer Emile Zola, novelist Anthony Trollope and artist and poet Edward Lear. The current owners bought the hotel in 1986 and have lovingly restored it, retaining the unique character of the listed buildings and grounds. There are in fact discrete refurbishments happening right now. These are being done gradually and were very well hidden from sight when we visited. Tea was served in the Mulberry Restaurant; tables were beautifully laid out and guests were enjoying the occasion. Live music from a classic trio certainly added to the atmosphere. We were shown to a table by an open door, which led out onto a terrace area, overlooking a large and peaceful lake. It was a warm Saturday afternoon which provided the perfect setting for our afternoon tea. The menu offers a good choice, ranging from a Classic Afternoon Tea with a wide range of teas, of course. These included English Breakfast, Earl Grey, French Earl Grey, Melbourne Breakfast, Just Peppermint, Oolong Berry and White Rose. There was also a
selection of iced teas for the slightly less traditional guest! For a slightly more indulgent experience, you can add a glass of beautifully chilled bubbles if you would like to spoil yourself. Again, there is a good selection to choose from. I’ve never had a proper afternoon tea before and when it arrived I was actually speechless (not a normal state of affairs!). It was totally mouthwatering and looked stunning. Everything included is handmade by the hotel’s pastry chef and to a very high standard. Hopefully, you can see the quality in my photographs included here. It looked amazing and I can assure you it tasted even better! We really enjoyed our special Saturday afternoon treat and I would like to thank everyone at Oatlands Park Hotel who made our visit so enjoyable. Look Local highly recommends this wonderful experience – we will certainly be returning with our friends and family to share the experience again. The staff were, without exception, friendly and professional, and we felt very pampered by the time we left. Thank you. Afternoon Tea is very popular and booking is essential. Please call the restaurant on 01932 847 242 or email restaurant@oatlandsparkhotel.com to reserve your table. As I mentioned, we went along on a Saturday afternoon, but you can book your treat for any day of the week, although the live classic trio is only in situ on Saturday afternoons. The venue within the hotel may vary on other days, depending on the weather and other bookings.

What is The CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
READING ROOM?
This is a question many local people may have asked recently, especially since the one in Baker Street Weybridge had blue tarpaulin shrouding the front for many weeks. The first Christian Science Reading Room opened in Boston, Massachusetts, in September 1888. Now every Christian Science church has a reading room within the area of its church. At the time the Reading Rooms were established, most publishing houses maintained a reading room on their premises. Here, customers could browse, read and buy the books they published. This was important, as books were expensive, and customers wanted to examine a book at length before buying. It was therefore natural that the discoverer and founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, established the Christian Science Publishing Society in 1898 for the distribution of her books on spiritual healing and the power of prayer. The Reading Room in Baker Street first opened in 1984. It has undergone refurbishment recently and the result is a more modern appearance of the front and shop layout, a quiet study room and a peaceful garden. In the shop, you’ll find weekly and monthly periodicals, books on healing spiritually and an international weekly newspaper, the Christian Science Monitor, which was established in 1908. The stated purpose of the Monitor is “To injure no man, and to bless all mankind”. As a newspaper dedicated to publishing news from around the world in a clear and concise manner, it has gained many Pulitzer awards. The Pulitzer Prize is awarded for achievements and excellence in newspaper and online
journalism. The study room is a Bible resource centre with a range rof eference books and a computer for those using the centre to gain access to helpful websites. The weekly and monthly publications of the Christian Science Publishing Society are available for reading; there is also an extensive library of bound volumes of The Journal and Sentinel dating back to the first publications of 1883 and 1898 respectively. In an editorial in the Christian Science Sentinel, Annie M. Knott explained that the demand for genuine Christian Science literature was growing fast and it is important that it be adequately met. “It is desirable that enquirers should have an opportunity to investigate these teachings first hand; and many who are not ready to purchase the literature are glad to read it, in order to discover whether it has a promise of practical help in their hours of need.” Future plans for the Reading Room and Bookshop in Baker Street include inter-denominational Bible talks and short video lectures. Call in or phone 01932 857369 for further details or visit the website www.csweybridge.org The volunteers who run the Reading Room Monday to Saturday from 10am to 1pm are members of the Christian Science Church at 70 Oatlands Drive. They look forward to welcoming members of the public who want to browse the books for sale, enjoy a quiet time reading in the Study Room or use the reference library and computer for Bible study. When the weather permits, you are welcome to use the garden as a quiet place to take a break. Christian Science should not be confused with Scientology

ASK BRUCE:
D O G G Y PA D D L E This month, we tackle swimming lessons canine-style, as requested by reader Michele who has a six-year-old boxer that loves to paddle but never actually swims. Swimming is an excellent source of exercise for dogs. It’s great for building muscle strength without putting too much pressure on their joints, which is why it’s often used as a post-injury rehabilitation tool. Some breeds, particularly labradors and spaniels, take to it, well, like a duck to water! Others, such as chihuahuas and pugs, are very reluctant. Boxers can and do swim, but are not renowned for it. This is partly due to their small tail and muzzle design, neither of which makes for natural doggy water-babies. Here at Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, our dogs love to swim and learn from each other. We have large paddling pools for them to swim in and smaller ones just for splashing around. For the less confident swimmers, the smaller paddling pools help familiarise them with water and build their confidence. They can then watch their other four-legged friends swimming in the larger pools and eventually join in too. Like children, dogs learn from other dogs and tend to copy. What better encouragement than seeing your pals having a splash and wanting to join in? As a result, we’ve seen breeds that stereotypically don’t like water turn into voracious swimmers – including boxers! THE
SMALL GARDEN
There are literally hundreds of thousands of different plants of different sizes and shapes and colours for a garden to choose from, but ironically to plant up a little garden takes more than a little thought.
If you have a big garden with plenty of space, then choosing plants is easy peasy, and when each and every one is fully grown, there will still be plenty of space. The same is not true, alas, for the small garden. Anyone who knows me will agree that my front garden has been a bit of a challenge. When we bought our house, the front south facing site was a sea of crazy paving, save for two narrow strips carved out on either side of what was to be the front path, and a single (and rather stupid-looking) square hole in front of the bay window. With all that solid concrete around, can you imagine how hot it all got in the height of summer. I wanted a lawn, and I also wanted this tiny garden to be full of colour and texture and be interesting to look at throughout the year. Also, I didn’t want to have to keep removing plant debris at the end of each season. That cut out all the pansies, busy lizzies, petunias, geraniums and all those other summer bedding plants sold by the lorry load in garden centres.
26 Looklocal Magazine - Summer 2016
What I always recommend in my gardening masterclasses is that the plant label is information that is ignored at your peril. You will always be given the height and spread of a plant, and if you are lucky, you will be given planting distances - the space you should allow between one plant and another so that it will grow obediently into the space provided. I ended up choosing Potentilla fruticosa, Spiraea ‘Little Princess’, Convolvulus cneorum, Callicarpa bodineiri, Ceratostigma wilmottianum, Euphorbia wulfenii, various penstemons, Carex ‘Evergold’, Lavandula ‘Hidcote’ and some ground-cover roses. There was also an under-planting of miniature spring bulbs which helped to add added sparkle early in the year. Apart from the grass, this garden virtually looks after itself – job done! here are few alternative attractions that could have tempted me away from watching, glass of bubbly in hand, the dolphins frolic around the millionaires’ yachts at anchor in the bay opposite the superb Royal Mirage Hotel’s exclusive beach in Dubai. With a bearable 30 degrees of sunshine tanning Trophy Wife and the bikinibeauties stretched under the wafts of welcome breezes off the Gulf waters, the thought of being anywhere else could only be an intrusive and not too bright idea. But it was countdown time on an invitation to attend a garden party at the British Embassy, an unmissable bash with all the great and good expats gathered in their finery to celebrate our troops’ distinctions in Afghanistan and cough up a few quid for a welfare fund. No footballers, no Beckhams, Rooneys or even Lewis Hamiltons to join in from their second or third £5m mansions on the spectacular Palm project - they were all on duty elsewhere around the globe. The chauffeur-driven Rollers and stretch saloons disgorged the megarich and their gorgeous, bejewelled
mates on a tidal wave of wealth and the ambassador and his wife welcomingly shook nearly 600 hands. It was clearly a time to go....funky.Or as close as you dare get without veering right off the wall and feeling well out of it. And that was dead easy in a mammoth black Bentley Mulsanne, darkened windows ‘n’ all, like an essential extra from The Sopranos or The Godfather but with a level of weighty individuality that made all the other luxy limos, including the Phantoms, look commonplace. Which they are in the Emirates... Mind you, you need to be an oil baron to fund, say, the 512BHP gas-guzzling engine which, around town and with a bit of heavy footing, gives you no better than around the mid-teens to the gallon. It is, after all, one mighty and muscular motor, upper-upper class inside, with bags of room for five of even the best fed and rounded of us, and with a good getaway turn of speed that tops 180mph. If you dare... And the boot could have swallowed up the embassy’s grand piano easily. The stool, too. And the pianist. The violinist as well, though she was very slender.....

Like most mansion-sized limos, it is more settled and best-behaved in a straight line on motorway treks than being jauntily skipped around the trickier, tighter stuff, and you could get the rear tyres close to meltdown if you really hoofed its 6.75-litre motor with its pair of turbo-chargers. What you do get in stacks is a gloriously hushed cabin, all soft leather and shiny wood, sheer presence and an announcement that you have arrived - just as we did with our chauffeur who was more chuffed than any of the drivers of limos costing nearly or just as much. I found out what fixed the grin on his face when I later drove it 80 miles to a desert retreat for some oasis-side rest-and-recuperation - and, without a rival Rolls Royce in sight, it dominated the car park where it was favourably positioned. Mind you, I’m relieved I wasn’t forking out for the fuel. That’s the joy of being a reviewer... Specification: Model: Mulsanne Engine V8 turbo-charged 6.75-litre. Speed 184mph, 0-60 in 5.1seconds. WORDS BY DAVID KID JENSEN
SIR GEORGE MARTIN
Chatting Up The Birds I was greatly saddened recently to read of the passing of the man universally known and loved as the 5th Beatle, the wonderful producer and renowned gentleman, Sir George Martin. I was privileged to get to know him in my Capital Radio days, as George was one of the founders of Capital Radio. He used to come and visit the studios and was always interested in the process and the way we operated. He also wrote the official themes for both Capital Radio and also Radio 1. Sir George, who died at the age of 90, was one of the key engineering and production team at EM. He was part of the generation of pop pioneers who used to wear white lab technicians overalls before work clothing became more relaxed and T -shirts and denim became more the norm. He first met The Beatles in 1962 and went on to have no fewer than 49 hits with the fabled 4, including 30 number one singles and 23 numbe ones. No wonder that he was so admired and successful. In the 50s, he recorded mainly comedy and novelty records with the likes of Peter Sellers, Dudley Moore, Spike Milligan and Bernard Cribbins among others, but he was particularly excited about working with the Beatles with their offbeam wit and presences and he was convinced they had what it would take to become a global success story. When I think of Sir George today, I am reminded of an interview he did in 2007 in which he told Mark Ellen that he had all the money he could want and that he tended to look at people and think; “Are you a good human being? That’s what impresses me most, rather than what they’ve achieved. These days, people don’t believe in anything apart from money and success. I really believe family and love are more important than anything.” Love is truly all you need.....
My garden’s choc-a-bloc with birds While sitting still I dwell On what if they could talk to me? The stories I could tell Sparrows, non-stop chirping Cockneys one and all I’d ask them ‘bout their kneecaps And how they got so small? Would robins tweet with mild conceit While passing by in flight ‘The breast’s not red, it’s orange For Pete’s sake get it right’ And would all female blackbirds Try to put me straight ‘Our feathered down’s a subtle brown A shade of black we ain’t’ Magpies, jays and crows Would get a lashing from my tongue ‘You’re thieving pests, stop raiding nests And murdering the young’ But if this dream were possible All secrets I would keep As no-one would believe me They’d say that talk was cheep

MISS SURREY 2016 SOPHIE KING
It has always been her dream to be an ambassador for the county she loves. Now, beauty queen Sophie King will fly the flag for Surrey at a national beauty contest. After being named Miss Surrey, the 27-year-old is gearing up to compete in the finals of the Miss Great Britain 2016. “I am so excited about the chance to represent Surrey and be an ambassador for our county. Miss Great Britain is a wonderful opportunity; it gives me a chance to stand up and tell people what great things we have here in Surrey and what a brilliant place it is to live.” Miss Great Britain is the longest running pageant in the UK. Having launched in 1945, the competition is celebrating its 71st anniversary this year.
““These days there is such a negative stereotype associated with pageants - I have two degrees and a great job, I joined MENSA when I was 11, I’m a feminist, a woman with leadership aspirations and a woman wanting to have a family - Why can’t we be it all?” “Breaking the mould is not always easy and will require the county’s support, as well as that of my friends and family, but it will be worth it!” Sophie has been busy supporting local community radio stations, including Surrey Hills and Brooklands Radio. In a few weeks’ time, she will abseil down Epsom Racecourse in aid of the local Harrison’s Fund charity, and she has recently opened Ashtead Village Day.
“I HAVE TWO DEGREES & A GREAT JOB, I JOINED MENSA WHEN I WAS 11, I’M A FEMINIST, A WOMAN WITH LEADERSHIP ASPIRATIONS AND A WOMAN WANTING TO HAVE A FAMILY - WHY CAN’T WE BE IT ALL?”
Zipping Up I was out walking on a day that alternated between hot sun and a cool, brisk breeze. I found myself repeatedly zipping up and unzipping my light, microfibre jacket. Each time I unzipped it, the phone in my pocket weighed heavily on one side of my body and flapped uncomfortably against my hip as I walked.
I
t felt annoying and distracting. So, despite the sun, I zipped up just enough to bring the two sides together, and instantly, the weight of the phone disappeared. I couldn’t feel it anymore. Not only was it no longer flapping, but with its weight shared along the hem of my jacket, I wasn’t even aware of its existence. That’s the power of support! Even when it’s not doing anything, it’s doing something: sharing the weight of a problem or worry, so that we can get on with life. Support can be from one person or a group of people, and if we’re lucky, we can get the support we need from family or trusted friends. But we’re not always lucky. Sometimes, even those who love us can knock us down when we’re at our most vulnerable, with comments like “You what?? I told you that would happen …” / “You never learn, do you…?” / “So what? Just forget about it.” / “You always … “ / “You’re so …” Would you trust your fears, worries or bloopers to someone who makes you feel even worse? Probably not. We need someone neutral, nonjudgmental and supportive. Asking for support You probably know who’s good to talk to, but it’s worth checking they’re up for it. If they’re about to go out or having a rough time themselves, you might be disappointed and get put off reaching out again. And if you don’t want your words spread around, make that clear! Giving support It can be sooo hard to listen without giving advice! Validate their feelings and allow them to express themselves, eg “You must feel so hurt – want to talk about it?” No judgment, reminders of past behaviour
or predictions of the future. No put-downs or mockery. No one-upmanship (“You think you have a problem? Let me tell you about …”). And no problem solving, unless it’s specifically asked for. An acknowledgement (“That sounds really tough / worrying / scary …”), a hug (if appropriate), even just a look conveying genuine compassion, will help the other person to feel seen, heard and cared for. The support doesn’t need to solve or remove the problem. My phone was still in my pocket. My jacket was still carrying the weight, but I just didn’t feel it any more.
If you have a problem, don’t zip up. Ask for support.
