Welcome to the April issue!

Easter is just around the corner and I hope like me, you are all looking forward to some time out to relax and be with some of your favourite people. The school holidays will also be with us in a week or so. How the year is flying by already! One particularly good thing about the arrangement was Alan’s driving, according to Miriam, who said it was a great deal better than hers. ‘What’s terrific is that he can talk and drive at the same time. He is an international celebrity you know, so he knows how to do it!’. She did admit, however, to being something of a back seat driver.‘Sometimes I would find myself saying ‘you’re very near the edge!’ or just ‘ooohhhh!’ When in Scotland Alan arranged a surprise to have a tartan of their own made called Aliam, which Miriam says is in her bedroom. ‘I don’t bring it out often. I haven’t been at home much as I’ve been working in Wales. I thought about bringing it with me, but I’m so frightened I might lose it, or somebody might steal it so it’s staying at home at the moment. It is wonderful, it’s the most wonderful present I think I’ve ever had. I love it and I love Alan for having the thought to do it.’

Scams, scams and more scams We heard a worrying statistic that over £3.34billion was stolen in UK scams last year. Yes £9.2m per day, £381,278 per hour or £6,354 per minute- just think about that for a moment... It is not surprising that almost every day we hear of a new scam purporting to be from one of the big tech companies like BT, Microsoft, Amazon, Virgin Media to name but a few, there is also an emerging cluster of delivery companies and government bodies like the tax man, who all apparently want to resolve the problem you didn’t know you had. The motive of the scammer is always the same - to gain access to your bank account, and/or your credit card details. Their approach appears to be consistent - they have detected a “problem” with your internet connection or, computer/ parcel delivery/ tax refund and you can help them confirm the problem, then they can solve the issue. Our advice at this point is to interrupt the scammer and suggest you will investigate the problem yourself. In some cases the caller will become quite persistent that they will resolve the problem for you, but you need to remain resolute and say you will investigate the problem yourself and hang up the phone. NEVER allow them to connect to your computer, Mac, tablet or smartphone. Because of the way the phone system works, there is a possibility that if you picked up your telephone receiver shortly after stopping the scammers call, they may still be connected to your line, to overcome this we would advise you to not use your phone for the next 10 minutes- this will force the line to disconnect from the last call, then you can make an outgoing call. Should you feel concerned about the problem you have been alerted to and wish to pursue the matter, firstly ask yourself: • Why would XXX (lets say Virgin Media) be calling me? • Do you have a Virgin Media service? • Would they have your phone number? (It is very unlikely that Microsoft would know it) Below we have listed below some useful contact numbers of the legitimate companies who supposedly has just called you, so that you can check the calls authenticity yourself. If the scammer has connected to your machine they may have installed some software which will enable them to access and control your computer without your permission, also we have seen some scammers install malicious software which will delete your data in 7/14/21 days after the hack. Should you have any concerns we can ensure your computer is free from any unwanted software. The government have setup a website on this subject which is https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/. Should you have any ongoing concerns please feel free to call or drop into the store for further information.

INGREDIENTS: • 500g Maris Piper potatoes (King Edward also work well) • 250g parsnips • 50g butter • 3tbsp sunflower oil • 12 rashers smoked bacon • 2tbsp maple syrup • 6 free range eggs

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Peel the potatoes, then coarsely grate them along with the parsnips, and squeeze out all the liquid (really important or you’ll get soggy mush rather than crispy rosti) 2. Season well and separate into size portions, then shape each portion into flat pancake shape, these are the rosti. 3. Heat the butter and oil in a pan and cook the rosti for 6-7 mins on each side until deep golden brown and crispy. Meanwhile, grill or oven cook the bacon for 20-25 minutes, until crisp and golden. Smoked bacon is sublime but unsmoked is good too. 4. A few minutes before the bacon and rosti are ready, bring a pan of water to a gentle simmer and poach the eggs. Top each rosti with 2 rashers of bacon and 1 poached egg. Serve with maple syrup.

Happy Easter.

NEW BMW Coupe

CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

If ever there was a surefire winner on the fiercely competitive car scene it comes in the attractive shapely form of the curvy new BMW coupe. Wowee! The brain-boxes and design geniuses at the Teutonic company headquarters at the far off San Luis Poto51 plant in MEXICO have combined to produce a stand-out vehicle due this month, a sure-fire threat to any rivals on the worldwide brmmm...brmmmmm scene. In my view - a winner. A bargain buy. It is a striking looking vehicle, bringing exceptional ability, style and performance to the ferociously competitive sports car scene. A classic three-box design with concentrations on the bonnet, the passenger compartment and boot, all painstakingly schemed to help its dynamics. The underbody benefits from a set-up, to deflect the usually troublesome and erratic airwaves, as required to reduce what can be alarming lift, and it even has dynamic flushfitting door handles. And just in case you are enthusiastic about your weekly shopping haul you can call on a 391-litre capacity boot to bear the load. The whole profile, so carefully planned, is bigger and lower than its predecessors with a much bigger wheelbase to glue you comfortably and securely to the road however bumpy it might be. It all makes up to extra safe cornering just

in case your Formula One dreams overwhelm you.... The fifty-fifty weight sharing 374 HP all-wheeldrive six-cylinder engine is the only car in its segment. There are three models, the all-wheeldrive BMW M240i coupe with its in-line engine, plus four-cylinder petrol and diesel versions, to accompany the “M” Sport spectacular. I can honestly say the newcomer has been meticulously designed and engineered. It is a shining star in its field, perfectly balanced with as many driving attributes and helpmates as you could wish for....fresh-faced and youthful. Imagine what you would like in your car to have and to hold and I would bet this gorgeous coupe has them awaiting. And the most severe test you may want to put it through will have been catered for and fore-planned by those brain boxes with millions of pounds to invest in Mexico. BMW has a fine long history of inventing, designing and producing winners in every class they have tackled and for my money this exceptional, value for money, this M240 x Drive challenger has surpassed them all. Sit in it and GO! You will thrill to the 374 HP motor, a 0-62 mph thrill in just 4.3seconds and a flat-out speed of 155 mph with a very pleasing petrol gulping of 34.9. So...how much for this top of the class companion? £45,795. Yes...£45,795! What a deal!

Inspiration!

Please Yourself Have you noticed how “Please Yourself” is often said with a shrug, or in a dismissive voice, carrying an undertone of disagreement or disapproval. As though it was wrong, selfish or antisocial to please ourselves. Why?? I get a great deal of pleasure from pleasing others. AND I’ve learned there’s a big difference between pleasing others so that I feel good / appreciated / valued / loved …, and pleasing others out of a genuine desire to make their lives better. I used to do a lot of the former. Now, I try only to do the latter. Do you ever feel you have to say “Yes” to every request, however unreasonable or inconvenient? We fear we will lose love or job security. The demanding boss, the dominating mother, the grumpy spouse: we bend over backwards to please them in the hope of gaining approval, appreciation or affection. And when the other person isn’t grateful, we can end up feeling resentful: “I’ve just spent two hours ironing his socks and he doesn’t even say ‘Thank you’!” We feel unappreciated, so we do more, hoping that eventually, the appreciation will come. It usually doesn’t, because we’ve trained people to expect us to put them first. Wanting to please people is a wonderful quality when it comes from the heart, when it gives us joy. It becomes a problem when we’re doing it for the wrong reasons, out of low self-esteem, or at our own expense and risking burnout.

We need to break the habit of reacting in a way that doesn’t serve us, by creating a pause between the request and our response of jumping to please. So, close your eyes. For ten seconds each: • Take three slow, deep breaths • Rub two fingers together so very lightly that you can feel the ridges on your fingertips • Listen for the furthest away sound, then the closest • Wiggle each of your toes separately. Then, reflect on when you say “Yes” to things you would prefer to say “No” to. What are you hoping to achieve? What are you trying to avoid? Buy yourself some time with answers like “I’d like to help, but I’m not sure I’m free” / “I can’t do X but I can do Y”. Then consider what you really want to do before you respond. Learn to say “No” to things that don’t feel right. Then your “Yes” will have even greater value. Will you do that?? Please yourself!
