ASK BRUCE: WHY DOES MY DOG ROLL IN FOX POO? One of the most frequent questions we get asked here at Bruce’s Doggy Day Care is ‘why does my dog love to roll in fox poo?’ And this month, reader and editor Ros Thomas asked just that. The answer is simple and comes from the canine inbred instinct to hunt. To do this successfully, it helps if they disguise their own scent, so rolling in the muck of their prey makes them smell like them and they can creep up undetected. Our modern-day domesticated dogs are very clean. This means they smell of us and our homes, easy for wild animals such as foxes to recognise and run away from. To stop your dog rolling, you must train it to understand this is unwanted behaviour, using a training aid such as discs or voice commands. My own labrador tries to roll in fox poo when we’re out walking, and as soon as she drops her shoulder to roll, I sternly say no and she stops before rolling. You can then issue a doggy treat so their good behaviour is rewarded. This should help break the fox poo game cycle! To get rid of the vile smell of fox poo, there are special shampoos out there, but one of the best solutions I’ve heard on the doggy grapevine is tomato ketchup. Apparently, the vinegar neutralises it! Bruce Casalis is director & founder of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, a multi-award winning business in Cobham. Do you have any dog training or canine behavioural questions which you would like to ask Bruce? Send your questions to :-

THE STORY OF PAINSHILL 35 YEARS TO CREATE AND 35 YEARS TO RESTORE

This year, Painshill Park Trust celebrates its 35th anniversary and the magnificent transformation of one of Surrey’s most important 18th century landscape gardens. Everything you see today at Painshill has been completely restored. Painshill is a magnificent 18th century landscape garden in Cobham which was created in the naturalistic style from 1738-1773 by the Hon. Charles Hamilton. Hamilton was educated at Westminster and Oxford, and like most gentlemen of this period, he went on several Grand Tours of Europe. He arrived at Painshill, fresh from 2 years spent in Rome, with a vision for a new type of garden with extraordinary views and fewer formal planting schemes. Over a 35 year period, Hamilton designed gardens at Painshill that were among the earliest to reflect a trend away from geometric formality to a wilder, naturalistic style. He did so by planting well-established and newlyintroduced and rare species, many from North America, and combined classical follies as emblems in a picturesque landscape. Hamilton changed the face of the English landscape forever. Sadly, due to lack of funds, he sold up and left Painshill in 1773. Over time, and several

owners later, Painshill gradually slipped into decay and became derelict. THE FORGOTTEN GARDEN Hamilton’s creation may never have been rediscovered if not for a small group of local residents who formed The Friends of Painshill. This group, along with the Garden History Society, began their campaign to rescue the garden. By the mid-70s, the tragic story of the derelict 18th century landscape garden began to attract national attention, and in 1981, the Painshill Park Trust was set up to restore this forgotten garden to its former glory. PAINSHILL TODAY Thanks to a lot of hard work from a dedicated team of staff, volunteers and generous donors, Painshill is now well on the way to full restoration. Most of the follies in the Grade I listed landscape have been rebuilt or restored, including the award-winning crystal grotto, which is once again a sparkling centrepiece. The landscape has been cleared and replanted with thousands of new trees and shrubs. Only plants which would have been available to Hamilton during his time at Painshill have been used to bring the past alive for a new audience.

WATCH OUT..

THE VINE WEEVIL’S ABOUT IN THE GARDEN!

This plant pest is a force to be reckoned with. A healthy plant can collapse overnight through the root-chomping actions of the vine weevil grubs. Often, by the time that you notice a plant in this sorry state, it’s too late to save it.

It seems that the evil weevil has become more widespread in recent years, and there can be no single definite reason for this, but one thing is certain: our fashion for keeping plants in containers has helped enormously. The adult vine weevil is a nocturnal insect and you’ll rarely see her during the hours of daylight. It’s easy to spot where she’s been eating, as you’ll find quite characteristic notches taken out of the leaf edges. What a notched leaf tells you is that there is a female around with an e-n-o-r-m-o-u-s capacity to begin a population explosion amongst your precious plants. And it’s time to go looking for those dreaded grubs and exterminate them. Camellias, bay, hydrangeas, bergenia and euonymus are weevil hot favourites. Eggs are deposited into the soil or compost, close to the stem or crown of the plant. Fresh eggs start off white and then gradually turn to a brownish colour as they mature. They may be quite difficult to see, and often they can be confused with the granules of slow-release fertilisers. They hatch in about 2 weeks and the resulting grubs will munch happily for the next few months on those delicious juicy plant roots nearby. Talk about excellent room service!

28 Looklocal Magazine - June 2016

The grubs grow to 13mm long; each will have a creamy white body and an obvious tan-coloured head and is usually curled into a characteristic C shape. Instinct will persuade the grub to stay as close to the stem or crown of the plant, chomping away at the main roots. If you’re suspicious that a pot plant may be suffering an underground attack from the dreaded larvae, carefully tip it out of its pot and examine the root ball. If you find any larvae at all, squish them without mercy, for every one you flatten is one less adult to lay hundreds more eggs. There can be no doubt that the most effective way of controlling vine weevil is by using a nematode soil drench. Invisible to the naked eye, by applying them in large numbers to the soil or compost, the vine weevil larvae are killed off without any ill effects to anything else, including humans and pets. These nematodes are only available by mail order and one good source is www. greengardener.co.uk, who will also provide comprehensive application instructions which you must follow carefully. M U S T A N G CAR REVIEW

TED MACAULEY TEST DRIVES THE NEW SIXTH GENERATION MUSTANG

A

decade or three ago maybe four - soccer legend Sir Bobby Charlton, to this day still one of my best friends, was gifted a sponsored Ford Mustang. Jaguar E-type owner me then, a racer in my wildest dreams, revelled in the speed Bobby hated, except when he was bursting clear of the midfield to score for Manchester United or England. So occasionally, he preferred to let me drive the American flyer, especially on the narrow and treacherously twisty roads from Manchester to his holiday home in Anglesey, off North Wales. That is still a joy of a memory, now revitalised by Ford’s revelation of their sixth-generation pony-badged Mustang, a real beauty. We motor reviewers were treated to its debut at the New York Motor Show with their gimmick of ultra-gimmicks, a replay of their publicity stunt of 1964, when a Mustang was unveiled on Floor 86 of the Empire State Building. I must say, staged as an eye-catcher of quality, the high-level launch was a needless attention-grabber to what

30 Looklocal Magazine - June 2016

I firmly forecast will be a winner on its own merits and looks. And I shall be very, very surprised if the orders are not quickly placed with the nearest Ford dealer as an outcome of genuine appreciation and promise that this stunner will be the best Ford has ever produced. In fact, it comes in two forms, both equally desirable: as a convertible with a fabric hood that folds away in seven seconds, and as a fastback to rival any challenger currently on the market, price and performance-wise. Over the past half-century, the Mustang has topped the six millions sales figure. Okay, iconic as it may be, it has not always hit the high spots of satisfaction, but this bigger, but lighter, brasher belter, fast and fun, looks to me like a surefire success, though it still, as ever, fails to hit the highest spots cabin-wise, and its suspension is floatier than we Brits are used to. But the brakes are real confidenceboosting grippers. The interior is unmistakably Stars and Stripes...hard plastic everywhere and bum-numbing seats. But the engine sound feedback

has the throaty gruffness of growling movie star Lee Marvin. Just to explode a widely-held myth that it is a car specifically targeting American wallets, Ford is making a breakthrough to grab a wider market with a right-hand drive version. Already, since its release in the UK a few months back, it has reaped nearly 4,000 orders. And the waiting list is swelling. If Trophy Wife would let me - but I have already been downed with a stern NO! - I’d give serious thought to swopping our Porsche Cayman for this iconic bargain buy, Ford’s new kid on the cylnder block, especially the topof-the-range Coyote. I wonder if Sir Bobby will be offered the latest model. If so, I’m on standby to resume my chauffering talents. Specification: Three engines 2.3, 3.7 V6 and 5-0 V8 all with eco-boost. Gears six-speed manual with paddle shifters or automatic. Performance V8 GT: top speed around 155mph. 0-62 in 4.8 secs. Fuel: 20.9 mpg. Price £34,995.

It was great to meet up recently with my old pal, Leslie Charles, the Grammy award-winner with worldwide sales of over 30 million, best known to the world as Billy Ocean. Back in the day when we were both ‘Kids’, we were based in Radio Luxembourg’s London office in Mayfair, which served as our home-from-home when not in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. I would be upstairs, pre-recording interviews etc. while Billy was situated in the basement with his piano, upon which he wrote songs for other people. He became the ‘house’ songwriter on behalf of Radio Luxembourg’s publishing division. We kept in touch through the years and it was wonderful to see him looking so happy and healthy, and, after all these years, enjoying the fruits of his past songwriting talents which eventually paid big dividends for him, with massive global hits such as ‘When The Going Gets Tough’, ‘Caribbean Queen’, ‘Red Light Spells Danger’ ‘Get Outta My Dreams’ and ‘Love Really Hurts Without You’. His new record company has just issued a double disc set, entitled ‘Here You Are + The Best of ’, which features one CD with all his past chart triumphs and the other disc with his cover versions of the brilliant music that inspired him, from artists such as Sam Cooke, Frank Sinatra, Bob Marley and many more. He said “It just seemed to fit perfectly... the songs that made me into the singer I became and where these songs took me to. Hence, Here You Are.” He’s also currently on a big successful UK tour, where he is having a lot of fun. Touring is important to Billy, as it’s not just about promoting his new release, but also provides him with a chance to employ an entourage who owe their livelihood to him. As Billy told me, ‘it’s a big responsibility when taking people on, and I do my best for them, as they are part of my team and rely on me”. Billy is one of the nicest people in pop and it’s lovely when good things happen to good people. His new collection of songs is available to order on Amazon and iTunes.

I Can’t When toddlers are learning to walk, they fall down time after time after time. But they don’t ever say, “Blow this for a game of soldiers, I’m going to keep shuffling on my nappy for the rest of my life”. They just get up and try again. And again.

M

any years ago, I completed my maths degree through the Open University, studying at night. I loved pure maths but I had always struggled with applied maths. One year, while on a week’s residential summer school, I was chatting with one of the tutors and confessed to having a complete block around the applied maths course I was taking. He offered to help me, and we spent several lunch breaks going over sample questions. I would say ‘I can’t’ and my thinking would literally stop in its tracks. He would say ‘you can’ and patiently show me how to solve the problems, over and over again. Gradually, I noticed patterns emerging from the chaos. Suddenly, on the third day, something clicked. I worked through a question and got the right answer. “I can do it,” I said, astonished, ecstatic. That day, just as important as my lesson in n-dimensional mathematics, was the lesson never to say ‘I can’t’. And while I’ve since forgotten everything I learned about n-dimensional maths, the lesson not to think ‘I can’t’ will stay with me all my life. As the saying goes, if you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re probably right. If we live our lives from the perspective of ‘I can’t’, we’ll see all the reasons why we can’t and are unlikely to see reasons why we can. Since we only see the reasons why we can’t, we rationalize that, of course, the evidence supports our thinking. So now, we’ll consciously conclude ‘I can’t’ because we’ve just proved it to ourselves. Neat, huh? Change your mindset Here are a few approaches to help you get past ‘I can’t’ – find one that works for you: Ask yourself ‘what if?’ What if this weren’t true? What

 

would you be doing if you could do it? What advice would you give your best friend in the same situation? What might you be willing to try if you believed it was possible? What’s the first step? Refuse to buy in to ‘I can’t’ messages. Replace them with ‘I can’. See yourself successfully achieving whatever it is you want to do. Often, we use ‘I can’t’ to protect ourselves from failure. There’s nothing wrong with failure if we learn from it. We also use ‘I can’t’ to avoid the hard work of ‘try, try, try again’. When things don’t work out, find out what you did wrong, learn from your mistakes and try again.

Yes, you can!
