Welcome 28

You’ve gotta love this month! It signifies the beginning of spring; the clocks go forward on 29th and the trees are just about to burst into life after the dark winter months. What’s not to like? We are delighted to include an interesting new weather feature for you this month too, welcoming local resident Bob Pritchard to our pages; Bob has been a career ‘weatherman’. Having been interested in the weather since a young age, he went on to work at the Met Office for many years, with 25 years in broadcasting the weather forecast on Radio 4 and Radio 5 live. He took early retirement 16 years ago but has remained very active in the subject. He was the editor of Weather Magazine (published by the Royal Meteorological Society) for five years and still writes monthly weather summaries for them. Bob has kindly offered to bring us regular weather related features. Thank you Bob I look forward to learning more... Guildford Arts Festival is coming up shortly, do see page 15 for information about that.

Salut Spring!
It’s almost time to wave Winter goodbye and welcome the Spring! Hopefully weather conditions will make it a warm welcome, so why not head outside and give your garden a spring clean? Perk up your patio or driveway by power-cleaning them. Mulch borders, feed perennials and clear leaves and moss. Aerate your lawn, sweep in some sharp sand and add a good fertiliser to give it a boost. If your lawn is beyond reviving, it may be more time efficient and costeffective to replace it completely. You can update bare borders and reshape them at the same time. Complete your makeover with a new patio, or extend an existing one to create extra space for entertaining, dining and relaxing outside. Installing a BBQ or outdoor kitchen will help to get the most out of your garden and ensure you spend quality time outdoors. Don’t forget to refresh tables and chairs by giving them a good clean. You can take your furniture from shabby to chic in just one afternoon. Remove dirt and cobwebs from wooden or wrought iron furniture with a stiff brush, before cleaning thoroughly and restoring the finish to its former glory. Invest in some new cushions or accessories for an instantly stylish update. Hopefully 2020 will be a year of plenty. Plenty of good weather and plenty of good times in your garden!

Whenever we are faced with a crisis in any area of life, reactions tend towards hype, then hysteria, with panic not far behind and all sense of perspective so easily gets lost. The undeniable trend to a warmer climate provides a clear example, with almost every weather event viewed with alarm. It sometimes seems that there is a belief that we never used to get ‘extreme’ weather. The link to extreme weather from a warming climate is at best tenuous. Floods have made the news this winter, but these are extremely common events in this country. Some of the worst include those of spring 1947 (when days of heavy rain following a snowy winter led to catastrophic floods over a wide area), September 1968, when older readers will no doubt recall the severe flooding from the River Mole following a weekend of torrential rain, and the very wet autumn of 2000 when large areas of the country were underwater for days. There are numerous only slightly less severe examples from earlier years. And we should remember that changes in land-use (including building on flood plains) are present-day factors - not to mention a media looking for every hint of such events when some earlier ones received little coverage. Surrey Music and Brighton International Festival of Choirs
A former Cobham resident and recipient of a British Citizen Award for Services to the Arts has launched yet another music-related project and is looking for some support to help fund his ambitious and exciting plans. Cliff van Tonder BCAa, founder and CEO of the thriving Cobham-based community organisation, Surrey Music, has announced the launch of the first ever “Brighton International Festival of Choirs” and is inviting offers of financial support through a crowdfunding campaign and sponsorship. Community-minded Cliff is not afraid of venturing into new territory and is well known in Surrey for bringing ambitious plans to fruition. Keen to find a way to make singing and choral music more accessible while giving something back to the community, he founded Elmbridge Choir in 2005. Since then he has founded two more choirs, the latest of which, Surrey Rainbow Choir, was launched in October and is the first LGBTQ+ choir in Surrey. His endeavours have raised in excess of £210,000 for charity, and it was for his service to music and the community that he received his British Citizen Award last year. His latest plan to launch a choir festival may be perhaps his most ambitious to date but he is confident of its success and would like to give people the opportunity to feel part of the project. “We are inviting choirs from Surrey, Sussex, all over the UK and worldwide to join us for a four-day festival of
16 Looklocal Magazine - March 2020
choral fun – concerts, workshops, a parade of choirs, singing by the sea and a huge concert at Brighton Dome but we do need some additional funding to help us,” says Cliff. “We always try to ensure our events are as accessible as possible, so we need to keep festival fees as low as we can to enable choirs to attend. All concerts and performances will be free for the public to attend, but this means that we will receive no income from ticket sales, and as we’ve always donated any concert proceeds to charity we don’t have the reserves to cover up-front costs such as venue hire, festival programmes, printing and participant workshops, masterclasses and staffing.“ The festival will support the mental health charity ‘Mind in Brighton and Hove’. Cliff explains that “Singing, and particularly singing together in a choir, has such a positive effect on wellbeing. Music really can change people’s lives, and not only will each person participating in the festival have an enjoyable and lasting experience, but in so doing they will help improve the lives and mental wellbeing of someone else they have never even met.” The impressive crowdfunding campaign can be found at www.crowdfunder.co.uk/brightonifc In addition to crowdfunding, Brighton International Festival of Choirs offers exciting and generous sponsorship opportunities for businesses who would like to align themselves with this prestigious festival. Details can be found on www.brightonifc.com/sponsors For more details of the festival, and to register a choir visit www.brightonifc.com.

Gardening with Auntie Planty ANSWERING YOUR PLANT PROBLEM EMAILS
Q1 I didn’t prune my roses in autumn last year, am I too late to do anything now? A1: Actually, spring is the best time for rose pruning. For the bush and floribunda varieties, cut out all dead, damaged and diseased stems. Shorten mainstems by about one half to two thirds to encourage new shoots from the base. Any remaining side shoots should be cut back to an outward facing bud. Q2: My camellia plants didn’t fare too well this year as the flowers were rather disappointing. A lot of them opened up with dry brown edges. A2: When camellia flowers open up perfectly, and then develop a brown edge to the petals this is a sign that they have been hit by frost. However, if the bud opens with those brown edges from the start, this is a sign that the plant was not given enough water during the hot and dry summer months.
Q4: I quite like buddleia, but the ones in my garden have grown and grown - can I cut these back without killing them? A4: Unruly flowering shrubs such as buddleia, lavatera, caryopteris, hardy fuchsia and summer flowering spiraea can be given quite a hard pruning now, to two or three buds on the main stems and removing any old shoots completely. In extremely cold areas where heavy frosts are a problem, delay doing this until for a few weeks...
Q5: My snowdrops were rather disappointing this year, with fewer flowers than in previous years. What can I do to improve them for next year? A5: When snowdrops start to reduce the numbers of flowers produced, it’s time to think about thinning out the overcrowded clumps. Unlike most other bulbs, snowdrops (and winter aconites) can be lifted when they are still in full leaf. Ease them gently out using a hand fork, separate them out into individual bulbs. Q3: My rhododendron leaves are looking rather Replant immediately to avoid the risk of the bulbs yellow and mottled. Is it sick? drying out. MEET THE TEAM WEYBRIDGE For almost 30 years now, Howett Thorpe has been servicing the accountancy and finance recruitment industry from our base in Farnham — where we first moved to back in 1991! But did you know we also have an office in Weybridge? Just like Farnham, our Weybridge office is ideally positioned to service the Home Counties. Despite being surrounded by Surrey countryside, the long-standing commuter hub is well connected to the capital — offering frequent trains to and from London Waterloo in under 40 minutes — and is just a short drive from the M3 and M25. Our Weybridge team is headed up by Director Sam Morgan, who has been working in recruitment for 19 years — 16 of which have seen her specialising in accountancy and finance. Alongside Sam in the close-knit team is our Associate Director, Nick Luke, and Senior Consultant Marc Taylor, as well as our Administrator Lucy Carballo. Vauxhall CORSA CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY
In the helter-skelter, bumper-to bumper jam-packed daily journeys you just have to make so uncomfortably to and from the office in the city, London or elsewhere, the dire need for some aid and ease on the wallet is crucial. And that’s where Vauxhall come into play. The just released fifth generation all new five-door Corsa city car is weeny and stylish, fun to drive and a welcome relief from the worrying demands on the pocket as well as being pretty good looking, a stand-out among the over-populated mini car masses in what is a hotly contested market. In short : it is a new dawning...Even for the leggy likes of six-footer me the cute Corsa is a comfy advantage, lighter, quicker, economical and not so much a handful as many of its rivals. Safety-first is a Vauxhall essential. And that’s why they have fitted as standard a forward collision alert and adaptive headlights. And that’s not the lone benefit the forward planning technical backroom boys in their think tank have programmed into the newcomer’s welcome new dawning. The interior has been totally redesigned to offer a sportier driving position and with a bit more space for passengers and their luggage. And that means it is a fair match for its principal rivals, the Ford Fiestas and VW Polos. Initially, as intros to the updated, uprated range of
28 Looklocal Magazine - March 2020
Corsas there is a 74bhp, 1.2litre three cylinder petrol engined version and a turbo-charged 1.2 boosting it 99bhp plus a 99 bhp 1.5 litre diesel. In every one of them the cabin benefits in the newcomer have been boosted with a more intuitive touchscreen, a sportier driving position and a sooper-dooper infotainment set-up. Overall you get the feeling the innards have been solidly constructed. All in all this petite hatchback shapes up as the heralding of a value for money mode of transport to keep you cool, calm and collected in the frustratingly irritating daily commuting crawls into the city. And every Corsa is now fitted with alloy wheels as standard helping to lighten the car’s weight. For my money the pick of the range is the turbocharged 1.2-litre three cylinder petrol user giving you 99bhp. It is perky and responsive and with enough boost to keep you in the melee whether at snail-pace in town or needing to overtake on the motorways. Only time will tell whether or not the revamped debut challenger will shake up its well-established rivals. My bet is that it will... Specification: 1.2 100SE. Engine: 3 cylinder. 99bhp.Gearbox: six-speed manual. Speed 121 mph. 0-60mph 9.3 secs. 53 mpg. Price: £16,850.

BOOK DAY 5 MARCH 2020
Celebrate World Book Day with Surrey Libraries!
Help us celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 5 March and ‘Share a Million Stories’ throughout March. World Book Day is the world’s biggest campaign to provide every child and young person in the country with a book of their own and inspire them to read more. Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator for success in life, more than family circumstances, educational background, or income. But it’s in decline. So, what not visit your local library and make the most of this month’s buzz about books and reading? Join us in supporting the global ‘Share a Million Stories’ campaign. Sharing stories together – anywhere, anytime – for just ten minutes a day has long-lasting effects on a child’s future and being read to is critical in igniting enthusiasm for reading, and creating lifelong readers.
How can you get involved?
Join your local library and borrow more books to capture your child’s new enthusiasm for reading. Visit your local library and spend 10 minutes reading a story together. Join us for one of our weekly Storytimes. Ask about Children’s Chatterbooks reading groups. Encourage your child’s class to organise a visit to your local library. Find out how teenagers can inspire younger children by volunteering with Summer Reading Challenge. Drop into your local library or visit surreycc.gov.uk/libraries to find out about our events.

Inspiration!
Drawing the Line Learning is one of my top strengths. I love learning anything to do with personal development, professional development, exploring spirituality and who we really are, deep communication, leadership, the science of happiness, how to create peace in our hearts and in the world ...
need to do less. We see the line, and we have a choice to honour it, to test it for validity, to move it or to ignore it. Sometimes, it’s a good thing to push the line – we expand our comfort zone and grow into a stronger, braver person. Other times, maybe we need to pull the line back and live a more disciplined, conscious life.
However, learning is also my weakness. If there’s a new course, a new shiny object on the personal or professional development horizon, I light up. The trouble is, I’m bombarded by emails offering interesting webinars or useful podcasts. It’s all incredibly yummy - but on top of everything else I have going on, it’s like having a second helping of dessert after a big meal. I can get mental indigestion. So I have to make choices.
What is your challenge? Could you write a book or learn a new skill instead of overdosing on Netflix? Do you overwork and stress yourself and those around you? Does your bank account pay the price for too much retail therapy? If we get still, we can often feel when we’re about to cross the line. And choose a better way.
While I can justify my love of learning - it is a good thing, after all - I can stay up far too late at night going from one interesting webinar, podcast or book to another. I only have so much time and energy, and I have to draw the line somewhere.
Where do you draw the line?
Time to get out your pencil!
Sonia Duggan + CPCC ACC +
That’s often the hard bit though, drawing the line. Deciding that enough is enough. Like pushing away a plate with food still on it because I can feel my stomach is full. Like saying “No” to another glass of wine because I know I’m approaching my limit. Like holding my tongue because I realise I am about to say something that might be uncomfortable for someone to hear. I do know when I’m staying up too late exploring another of my favourite subjects, because my inner wisdom tells me I’m going to wake up feeling groggy and mess up my day. My real learning is in managing my learning. But knowing where to draw the line doesn’t have to be tough. We all know, deep inside, what is the right thing to do. Where we need to do more. And where we
