NOVEMBER ISSUE

Remember, remember the 5th of November! Not only because that is The Weybridge Flyer copy deadline for the festive issue, but also because it’s a night to keep our pets safely inside. I know one small brown dog who will be crossing her legs and hiding that evening & a few other evenings, I expect, for sure! Inside this month, we hear about an amazing young musician, Will Dutton. His achievements are amazing and if you are looking for a worthy cause to support, you wouldn’t go far wrong by helping this impressive young man. As well as this, we have a great car review from Ted Macauley, and we hear from our favourite Canadian DJ David Kid Jensen again. Lovely book reviews this month, our thanks go to Weybridge Books for these, and why not try your hand at one of our competition crosswords? There’s lots of other local news to discover inside, so I’ll sign off now and leave you to it!

Have a gr eat month & see you next time Kindest regards,

MYOFUNCTIONAL PRE-ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT – unlocking genetic growth potential and straightening teeth naturally.A new an

A new and fresh approach.

Are you concerned about your child’s crooked teeth? Do you know there are options other than waiting for braces? At Danny de Villiers Dentist in Weybridge, we can offer a treatment that can straighten your child’s teeth much sooner and without braces. We treat the causes, not the symptoms. In addition to environmental factors such as the modern diet, this incorrect or inhibited development is the result of poor myofunctional (tongue, cheek and lip functional) habits such as thumb-sucking, reverse swallowing and mouth breathing. Once these causes have been recognised, early preventative options offer exceptional prospects for natural development and stable results without invasive treatments. Rather than relying on extractions to create extra space for teeth, braces to force teeth into alignment or surgery to reshape jaws, myofunctional preorthodontic options are available and can address the problem earlier and far more effectively.

Non-invasive Earlier More stable This involves wearing a removable appliance that is worn for an hour a day & at night when sleeping. It’s a more ‘natural approach’ to straightening your child’s teeth while they are still growing. Suitable for children from 5 – 15.

sn’t it funny how we get so used to our community that we sometimes forget how special it is? How many times have you driven from Cobham to Fetcham and ignored the little school on the other side of the M25? Well, that little school is, of course, the world-famous Yehudi Menuhin School, arguably the finest music college in the world. Its alumnae include Nigel Kennedy, Nicola Benedetti and a host of wonderful players working with some of the world’s greatest orchestras.

T

his year saw another great feather in the cap for the school when one of its final year students, William Dutton, won the string section of the BBC Young Musician of the Year. And if you have attended St Andrew’s Church over the last few years, you might have seen the young prodigy there, either singing in the choir or astounding everyone with his virtuosity in his many concerts. Will was born in 1995 in Leeds. He asked to play the violin aged 3 and began taking lessons when he was 4. In 2004, his talent was recognised by the Kazakh virtuoso Marat Bisengaliev; he subsequently studied with Marat and his wife Vassilia and then with Raimonda Koço in Leeds. Will was a member of the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain between 2003 and 2008 and was awarded a Leverhulme Trust Scholarship in 2006. In 2008, he gained a place at the Yehudi Menuhin School where he studied with Lutsia Ibragimova. As a pupil of the school, he regularly performed in the school solo and chamber music recitals, most notably last year, leading a performance of Schubert’s C Major Quintet. He led the viola section of the Yehudi Menuhin School Orchestra last summer in the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, Switzerland, playing on Lord Menuhin’s Testore viola. In November 2013, Will led the violins of the YMS orchestra as they toured Holland, giving concerts in The Hague and in Amsterdam, where they accompanied the finalists of the Youri Egorov International Piano Competition. Successes as a soloist have included first place in the Concerto Class and the Annie Forth and Thomas Trophy Classes at the Harrogate Competitive Festival. Will was a soloist in Bach’s Concerto in D Minor for Two Violins with the York Minster Musical Society in York Minster in 2012. In April 2013, he was a guest soloist at the European String Teachers’ Association Conference and has been invited

back to perform again at this year’s national conference. In February 2014, Will performed at the Interlakner Musikfestwochen in Bern, where maestro Vladimir Ashkenazy presented the Yehudi Menuhin School with an award. And of course, the following month he won the coveted BBC Young Musician of the Year 2014 in Cardiff. If all that wasn’t enough, Will also won the BBC Radio 2 Young Chorister of the Year in 2006! He has performed with world-class soloists, orchestras, conductors and celebrities, including José Carreras, Alfie Boe, Aled Jones and Ken Dodd. He made his BBC Proms début in July 2007 as a soloist in Fauré’s Requiem with the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales, conducted by Thierry Fischer, and his Welsh Proms début in July 2008 as the Youth in Mendelssohn’s Elijah alongside Bryn Terfel. Will left the school this year and is now preparing to become a professional muscician - a tough career but one he is working hard to achieve. As part of that process, Will has moved to Switzerland to study in the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne with Svetlana Makarova. Whilst it all sounds fabulously exotic, it is not cheap! Will is not from a wealthy background and is finding it hard to pay the £20,000 a year costs of living and learning in one of the world’s most expensive countries. Then he had an idea - why not ask for support using Crowd Funding? He set up a page and is kicking it off on 1 November. So if you fancy supporting Will, & even getting some great presents - CDs, concerts - read the details below & give this lovely, talented guy a hand - he would really appreciate it.

Support Will! If you fancy supporting Will in his career, then go to www.crowdfunding.co.uk and search for William Dutton.Your money will go straight to Will and there is a whole bunch of great gifts he will provide for your help. Thanks from Will!

I’m often asked which my favourite era in pop is, and for many years, I would automatically say ‘the 60s’, mainly because I became a pop fan in that decade & also because music was such an important part of youth culture. The 60s were also a breakthrough time for British acts in America. Having recently hosted a couple of big 80s themed parties, I’m now wondering if it isn’t time to evaluate the importance & enjoyment of the most colourful decade in pop. The 60s were revolutionary, the 70s were eclectic, having started with introspective guitarstrumming singer-songwriters & ending with the punks whose purpose was to shake up the scene & chase away the remnants of hippie culture. The 80s though were something else. I have fond memories of presenting Top of the Pops, when each episode was like hosting a big party. The decade saw the birth of MTV which meant that image was just as important as the music. Music & fashion mixed like never before. Superstars such as Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Madonna & Prince emerged to embrace the new MTV generation, while producing some of the most enduring music of all time. George Michael, David Bowie, Annie Lennox, Boy George & Duran Duran became as popular in the US as they were in the UK. CDs, Walkmans, cassettes & boom boxes also gave us new ways of accessing the hits. I began the decade hosting Top of the Pops & ended it hosting The Network Chart, so I was in the enviable position of seeing the new trends evolve & mixing with the personalities who were most successful in the 80s. So, for me, while video didn’t actually kill the radio star, it was certainly a big game changer!

TThe hot, and I do mean HOT, Majorca sunshine took over where the cool silvery moon had left off and its beams pinpointed a view, centred eye-catchingly in the shadows of the spectacular Tramuntana mountains backdrop. Sheer joy. A sight to behold. A black beauty. My borrowed Porsche 911 Cabriolet. It was not only a welcome means of escape from the rather dreary hotel I had booked into - and, despite my obvious able-bodiedness, had been allotted the disabled guest’s room - it was a parade of a car on an island of show-offery. And neither I nor Trophy Wife fret about being stared at in an atmosphere of the utter envy of bystanders. Posche does not mess about or stint on style when there is really big money to be gained for a return of sheer excellence on the move, at a breathtaking, but safe, speed. This charismatic rag-top cabrio-cousin to the coupe, one of the world’s truly eminent sports cars, is a gift to sun-worshippers like me and TW who revel in breeze-in-the-

hair driving. Its behaviour and hard-grip road holding, fitting of such a painstakingly developed example of automotive genius, were immaculate whatever pressures I applied, either on the sharp mountain turns or on the straighter, slightly faster runs to the capital, Palma. There is so little tyre noise and if you opted for the spec, as on our car, of adapative dampers at extra cost, the ride becomes pleasant and compliant. With the roof down, you could be plunging into a gale and it would not disturb the calm of a cleverly designed cockpit that even has an electric roller-blind breeze-blocker behind the front seats, so that you don’t have to fiddle to put it up. And the seat heaters...wow...are a treat of bum-warming that keep you fire-

sidedly comfy and cosy, even with the top tucked away and the chilliest air striving to invade. With the kiddyseats in the back and a generously spaced boot upfront, the cabrio lives up to its deserved reputation as one of the most practical of sports cars. It certainly gives the likes of its rivals, the Audi R8 Spyder, the Mercedes SL and the Jaguar XKR, a good run for their money and performance levels. The entry level £83,000, which can be easily upped on the add-ons, appears trifling in comparison as the most economical and lowest-emitting of them all. As a final tribute to Porsche’s enlightenment, I cite the roof. They have redesigned it and sandwiched magnesium panels into the fabric, so that when the roof is up, it is effectively a hard top. Whatever words of praise I may summon up, I feel they fall well short of the reality which may only be discerned by getting behind the wheel for a spin to thrill. The perfect getaway car from a dreary holiday stopover.

A Good Read Armand Wadsworth

This year, we are offering a fantastic range of quality toys and gifts that promote child development in the entertaining, educational and imaginative way you’d expect from Weybridge Books. Great quality wooden toys from Big Jigs, beautifully designed toys from Djeco in France, interesting craft activity sets from Melissa & Doug, pretty gifts and nursery accessories and creative and stimulating games can all be found within the children’s section of the shop. For newborns and younger babies and perfect for baby shower gifts, you’ll now find beautiful boxed blankets and handmade shoes from Daisy Roots. We’ve been selling toys for nearly three years now and we know what products our customers value and how much you appreciate our stocking fillers and pocket money gifts. We always look for things that are interesting and a bit more unusual, but still good quality at a low price and we’re really excited about the new products we have for you this Christmas. But of course, our great purpose in life is still books, and this year, I promise that you’ll find something special with us. Our relationships with the major publishers mean that we will get signed editions from some of the great authors and celebrities of the day. I can’t tell you who they are yet, but if last year is anything to go by, it will be a bonanza. Christmas means biographies and autobiographies by the score. Ones to look

out for this year are My Autobiography by Ian Poulter. The charismatic golfer tells his inspirational story. Or Vivienne Westwood by herself and Ian Kelly. Fashion designer, activist, punk creator, grandmother, living legend!! Judi. Behind the Scenes by Judi Dench looks excellent. Or go back in time: there is a terrific biography of Elizabeth l by Lisa Hilton, and also Andrew Robert’s Napoleon the Great is out now. But if it’s ideas you’re looking for, then here’s a list of your favourite reads in Weybridge this year.

Here are our biggest sellers this year in the category of young adult fiction: • Divergent by Veronica Roth. • If I Stay by Gayle Forman • The Fault In Our Stars by John Green • War Dog by Chris Ryan • Unleashed by Ali Sparkes • The Diamond Thief by Sharon Gosling • The Day I Met Suzie by Chris Higgins • How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff • When The Guns Fall Silent by James Riordan • In Bloom by Matthew Crow • The Demon Dentist by David Walliams So there you go. That’s it for 2014. Weybridge Books does its bit to spark the imagination of youth. I will leave you with a story about childish imagination that I love. It is a story of a little girl who was in a drawing lesson. She was six and she was at the back, drawing, and the teacher said this little girl hardly ever paid attention, and in this drawing lesson she did. The teacher was fascinated and she went over to her and she said, “What are you drawing?” And the girl said, “I’m drawing a picture of God.” And the teacher said, “But nobody knows what God looks like.” And the girl said, “They will in a minute.” Seasons greetings to you all from me and all the team at Weybridge Books: Dominic, Sorcha, Maria, Bert and Phoebe.

This is quite a minefield for patient & professional alike. Clinical trials bring new evidence, changing guidelines which in theory should deliver better care to patients. Many medications used in diabetes care have multiple benefits & ideally should be considered sooner rather than later, as prevention of complications in diabetes is key. Anyone with diabetes over the age of 40 should consider statin therapy. They get a bad press, but current evidence is robust that they reduce cholesterol levels & also reduce risk of heart disease. Blood pressure is also an important element in diabetes requiring good control. A group of tablets called ACE inhibitors (ramipril, enalapril, lisinopril) work well to achieve this, while also helping maintain healthy kidney function. There are now many different tablets used to control blood sugar levels. Some have been around for over 60 years, while others are very new to the market. Metformin is the mainstay first-line treatment in diabetes management. It works well, reduces appetite & helps the body use its own insulin better. It is used as long as it is tolerated & kidney function is good. Gliclazide also has been around a long time. It seems now though to be being superseded by other, newer medications. It works by stimulating the pancreas to make more insulin & may cause problems with hunger, weight gain and low blood sugars (hypos). Newer drugs are now being welcomed, as more data is being collected as to the effectiveness of these drugs. If you feel your blood sugars control could be better, why not discuss your medication options with your GP or practice nurse?

 Look on the bright side... 

We all know people whose cup is always half full. You may be one of them yourself. On the other hand, like many people, you might just find all this positivity stuff too fluffy and unrealistic.

What is positivity?

Positivity isn’t about putting a false smile on our face. Researcher Barbara Fredrickson, PhD describes it as a wide range of deeply-felt positive emotions, including love, joy, gratitude, interest and hope, that change our mindsets and biochemistries. Feeling positive emotions not only makes us happy in the moment but also contributes towards our well-being in the future and our ability to cope when things get tough. It’s also not about banishing negative emotions. But for a lasting impact on our happiness, Fredrickson says we need at least three positive emotions to lift us up for every negative emotion that drags us down. Most people clock in at ratios of 2:1 or less.

Why positivity matters

Positivity is one of the most critical factors in the development of high performance at work and good personal and work relationships, leading to greater productivity, creativity, innovation and levels of happiness. In high performing teams, the ratio of positive to negative reactions is 5.6 : 1. This falls to 0.36 : 1 in low performing teams. And it’s not just a work thing: Dr John Gottman, world-renowned for his research on marital stability and divorce prediction, says marriages that flourish have a 5 : 1 positivity to negativity ratio.

Increasing our positivity

Dr Fredrickson says it’s better not to pressure yourself to be positive, but to create a mindset

that’s open, appreciative, curious, kind and real. Beauty and kindness are all around us make a point of appreciating them. And many of us put off doing the things we love the most, things that would make us feel more positive about life - so make time to do them. At the same time, keep negativity in check. Avoid jumping to conclusions or reliving upsetting scenes from the past, and reduce toxic communications - criticism, contempt, blaming and stonewalling - which have a negative effect on you and those around you. • choose a positive emotion you’d like to feel more often. List the things that made you feel it in the past (films, music, quotations, poems, singing, a walk in the park ...) and bring more of it into your life now. • review your list daily and practise experiencing the chosen emotion. Alphonse Karr, the 19th century French journalist, wrote, “You complain that rose bushes have thorns; I rejoice and give thanks that thorns have roses.”

Smell the roses!

GARDENING WITH AUNTIE PLANTY FA L L I N G L E AV E S

This may come as a surprise, but leaves are not just green. Those other shades that show up during the fiery months of autumn are there all year round - it’s just that you can’t see them through that vibrant mantle of green chlorophyll. And right now, some of the trees around us are getting ready for the greatest show on earth.

Why leaves fall

Shedding leaves is an adaptation that enables a plant to survive cold, wintry conditions. Plants defoliate at other times as well, e.g. when placed under extreme stress, such as in drought conditions. This state is known as dormancy & it enables plants to slow processes to a minimum for survival. In autumn, leaves undergo a process called senescence, where the leaf tissue begins to die. Dead cells form in an abscission layer at the base of the stalk (or petiole) & the twig to which it is attached. The leaf will fall off when the abscission layer completely covers this point.

Colour change

The range of autumn colour extends from yellow to bright red & purple. The leaf stops making food or chlorophyll; it is the chlorophyll that makes tree leaves look green. Chlorophyll is such a strong substance that it masks the other pigments present in the leaf, and then, as the level of chlorophyll in the leaf drops, the other pigments are revealed. Sugar levels in the leaves rise in autumn, for, while photosynthesis has slowed, sugars are still being produced & lower temperatures mean that these are moved around the plant more slowly. The full range of leaf pigments are carotenoids (seen as yellow, with a tendency to turn red), xanthophylls (yellow), anthocyanins (showing a

range of colours from pink, red through to blue & purple, depending on the acidity or alkalinity of the soil) anthoxanthones (more yellows) & tannin (browns).

Environmental factors

More light increases anthocyanin production, so clear bright autumn days means more vivid autumn leaf colour. Cold but frost-free nights delay leaf fall & reduce the rate of sugar removal from the leaF. This intensifies foliage colour. Temperature, leaf age & shade also affect autumn leaf colour- plants grown in higher temperatures exhibit less colour than those grown in lower temperatures.

Amazing autumn colour

So, autumn colour is spectacular and unpredictable. It relies on a complicated & variable combination of climatic, environmental, genetic & physiological factors. It’s all the more amazing to see a brilliant & vibrant maple in full autumn dress when you consider all the factors at work to produce those vivid colours. Auntie Planty is a qualified horticulturist who offers gardening know-how sessions in your own garden. Catch her on Brooklands Radio every other Friday, at 14.30. © 2014 Valerie McBride-Munro
