Welcome Hello and welcome to a new year with Rotana. As we celebrate the beginning of 2019, we look forward to the next few months that are filled with boundless opportunities to explore this wonderful region that we at Rotana call home. This is the first opportunity I have had to welcome you to one of our properties following the departure of our former President and CEO, Omer Kaddouri. After more than 20 years at this remarkable company, Omer is exploring new and exciting challenges and I feel honoured and privileged to have worked alongside him. I am sincerely grateful for his support and I hope that I can be equally successful in driving the company forward. It is certainly an exciting time ahead at Rotana and I cannot help but reflect on just how much the Middle East has changed since we opened our first property in Abu Dhabi in 1993. It has been an astonishing transformation, especially for the UAE capital which has evolved dramatically and is now home to a host of striking cultural attractions, record-breaking theme parks and spacious shopping malls. Much in the same way the region has grown, Rotana has always been ambitious in its expansion plans. Of course it has not always been smooth sailing and in the past few years it has been challenging for everyone, but we remain on track to hit our target of operating 100 hotels by 2020. Within the next 12 months we are set to open a number of new properties, two of which, Centro Corniche, Al Khobar and Dana Rayhaan by Rotana, Dammam, will be in Saudi Arabia. Our offering in Dubai is also set to grow when Al Jaddaf Rotana opens in the third quarter of 2019. This expansion would not be possible if visitors did not continue to flock to the Middle East where each destination has so much to offer. A great example of this can be discovered on page 24 as we look at Jordan, Oman and the UAE to find the hidden beaches, secluded stretches of desert and soaring mountains that provide the perfect base for a camping adventure under the stars. Our insiderâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s guide to 48 hours in Ras Al Khaimah on page 18 will also open your eyes to the unique experiences within the historic emirate. Meanwhile, on page 20, we take a look at the beauty rituals in the Gulf that date back centuries and can still be found in spas throughout the region. Finally, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to you, our valued guests, for your continued support of Rotana. Regularly attracting some of the biggest artists in the world, VH1 Supersonic has firmly established itself as one of India’s most celebrated music festivals. Part of the larger Art Week festival that takes place each year in Dubai, this fourday exhibition showcases artworks from the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia that have been collated from 105 galleries in 48 countries. Held at Madinat Jumeirah, the fair also acts as a platform to promote talented regional artists, with many taking part in workshops and showcasing their immersive installations.

HOLI FESTIVAL MAR 20-21 · WORLDWIDE

SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST MUSIC FESTIVAL MAR 11-17 · USA

The largest music festival in the world, South by Southwest hosts a curated mix of artists performing in bars, clubs, hotels and more in Austin, Texas. Not limited in genre or regional focus, audiences can enjoy a variety of musical styles from new, developing and established names. This year some 2,000-plus performers from 65 countries are set to thrill more than 50,000 fans at the week-long event.

A Hindu celebration that heralds the start of spring and the triumph of good, celebrations begin the night before Holi when, across Nepal and India, people come together in front of a bonfire. The next day the festivities truly begin with revellers around the world taking to the streets to throw coloured powder at each other. Water balloons and water pistols filled with bright hues are also used, while singing and dancing adds to the party atmosphere.

Experience a mesmerising monsoon at this permanent exhibit in Sharjah An installation created by Random International, a studio specialising in ‘experimental practice within contemporary art’, Rain Room allows people to experience a constant indoor rainstorm without getting wet. As visitors walk through the darkened exhibit, some 1,200 litres of self-cleaning, recycled water falls all around them. That is thanks to a series of motion sensors pausing the rainfall when detecting movement, creating a six-foot radius around the individual. Originally installed at the Barbican in London in 2012 and presented in New York, Shanghai and Los Angeles, the exhibit is now

Rain Room allows visitors to experience a constant indoor rainstorm without getting wet permanently on display at Al Majarah, near Buhaira Corniche in Sharjah. Housed within a unique room that was designed by the Sharjah Art Foundation, the 1,460-squaremetre space is lit by spotlights and the only sound is the rain crashing against the floor. Hugely atmospheric, it is the first of a series of artist-designed permanent spaces from the Sharjah Art Foundation Collection. 13

Start off right: Arancini “This is a classic Italian street food recipe that I am excited to bring to the UAE. An indulgent choice of starter, arancini are crispy balls of rice, stuffed with a delicious filling, covered in breadcrumbs and fried to perfection. At Si Ristorante, we stuff our arancini with a tasty combination of green peas, mushrooms and fontina cheese. The soft creaminess of the buttery cheese pairs well with the crispy breadcrumbs.”

“This dish is simple when it comes to ingredients, but big on taste! It is also wonderfully light, unlike many typical pasta dishes. The clams are cooked in a very rustic way, with just a touch of tomato sauce and white wine. When these two ingredients combine with the juice released from the shellfish, plus the salted pasta water, it creates an explosion of flavour. You will feel as though you are enjoying a taste of the Mediterranean Sea itself. As a finishing touch, I like to garnish the clams and spaghetti with grated bottarga (cured fish roe, an Italian delicacy).”

The big finish: Tiramisu “When it comes to classic Italian desserts, nothing beats a traditional Tiramisu, an elegant layered dessert made with ladyfinger biscuits, espresso coffee, Marsala wine, and creamy mascarpone cheese, all dusted with cocoa powder. The combination of light layers and rich flavours makes this the perfect end to any meal.”

3 NATIONAL MUSEUM OF RAS AL KHAIMAH Housed in a centuries-old fort with foundations dating back to the 1800s, the National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah offers an interesting insight into the history of the emirate, with many of the artefacts and collections on display donated by members of the ruling Al Qasimi family, as well as excavated from the surrounding area. It is also a prime example of the region’s architecture, with its stately towers, elaborately carved doors and wide open courtyard.

A recent study valued the total global spend on beauty and cosmetics at approximately $445 billion, an extraordinary sum that seems destined to grow even further in the coming years. Hammams

When it comes to a must-try spa ritual in the Middle East, a traditional hammam or Turkish bath should be at the top of everyone’s list. From the authentic bath houses of Turkey to the luxury spas of the UAE, there is a type of hammam to suit every taste. A detailed cleansing ritual, often carried out on a warmed marble slab, it usually begins in a steam room, after which the skin is scrubbed all over with an exfoliating mitt called a ‘kesse’. This is followed by a deep cleanse using a foaming soap, while the finishing touch is a cold water rinse, followed by an oil massage. Dating back to the days of the Ottoman empire and once a communal ritual, there are numerous hammam experiences available at Zen the spa, which can be found in a number of Rotana properties. Henna

The art of henna is one of the most instantly recognisable beauty rituals of the Arabian world. Today, argan oil has evolved to be one of the most sought after ingredients in the beauty industry as it contains omega fatty acids, vitamin E and linoleic acids, all of which combine to soothe and moisturise dry skin and hair. Much of the argan oil we use today is produced by women’s co-ops in Morocco and purchasing fair trade argan oil is an essential way to support these initiatives.

Rhassoul clay

Like argan oil, rhassoul clay has its roots in Morocco, originating in the Atlas Mountains. Also known as red clay, Moroccan clay, and ghassoul clay, it is unique to this particular area and is formed by natural geological conditions and volcanic activities that occur over centuries. For years, it has been used in North Africa, southern Europe and the Middle East to treat problematic skin. Rich in minerals such as silica, potassium and magnesium, it can improve the skin’s texture, reduce

blemishes and treat dryness. It is typically mixed with water to form a paste and used as a face, body and even hair mask. Many spas in the region incorporate rhassoul clay in their treatments for its powerful healing and beautifying properties.

Rose water

An ingredient that is just as often associated with Middle Eastern cooking as it is with beauty, rose water has powerful healing properties to make you glow inside and out. Made by steeping rose petals in water, its consumption is thought to date back centuries to when the Romans dropped petals into their water (and wine) in order to connect with Venus, the goddess of love. Lahbab Sands – UAE

A popular destination for novice campers, Lahbab provides the chance to explore the great outdoors while still having the city on your doorstep. Just a 30-minute drive from the centre of Dubai, it is renowned for its spectacular red sands and daunting 300-foot dune, known as Big Red. Set up your tent close to the soaring Fossil Rock before exploring the rolling dunes and watching the sun slowly disappear beyond the vast stretch of empty desert. As night falls and the temperature drops, fire up the barbecue and enjoy a sense of peace and quiet while gazing up at the stars. Should you want to extend your trip to the desert, then take a short journey to the sleepy village of Al Madam to discover secluded camping spots where your only company will be wandering camels from nearby farms.

Jebel Akhdar – Oman

Part of the Al Hajar mountain range that spans much of Oman, pitching a tent in this scenic destination is the best way to explore the jagged drama of these soaring peaks. Those choosing to stay at the top of Jebel Shams, the highest point in the range at 3,000 metres, will be rewarded with dramatic views, but the changeable weather conditions and low temperatures mean this is only for brave and experienced campers. However, a great alternative is to set up camp in the foothills where the terrain is less jagged and the conditions are more friendly. From here you can explore one of the excellent hiking trails during the day and then spend the night around a camp fire. Don’t be surprised if you end up being invited to share food with fellow campers, as hospitality is intrinsic to Omani culture.

Wadi Rum – Jordan

Known as the Valley of the Moon, camping at Wadi Rum delivers an otherworldly experience thanks to the combination of sweeping red sand dunes and towering sandstone structures. One of the most dramatic regions in the whole of Jordan, the striking landscape and clear night skies have attracted a steady wave of tourists and film crews, with the 2015 hit movie ‘The Martian’ filmed in the area. One of fashion’s most formidable duos, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana prove flamboyancy and family are the perfect style pairing

hen it comes to making an impression and standing-out from the crowd, the founders of Italian super brand Dolce & Gabbana do so with unabashed confidence. And rightly so, considering they’ve been in the business for more than three decades. The Italian-born designers (Dolce from Sicily and Gabbana from Milan) met while working for the same design studio in the 70s, before later going on to start their own label, showcasing their first catwalk collection in 1986. Today, they are, and have been for a while, one of Milan Fashion Week’s hottest tickets. From the extravagantly dressed models to the star-studded front row, the runway show is a spectacle in every sense of the word. No stranger to celebrity connections, over the years famous faces have been instrumental in boosting the brand. In 1988 Linda Evangelista enlisted the help of fellow supermodels Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington to walk with her for their Sicily collection show. It’s said that at the time the designers were only able to pay the models in clothes. Not long after came Madonna’s endorsement in 1991, (first she wore Dolce & Gabbana to her ‘Truth or Dare’ film premiere and then commissioned the pair to design costumes for her 1993 world tour) which catapulted the label into the mainstream where it has enjoyed resounding success ever since. One of the many reasons for this continued triumph, of course, can be linked to the label’s clear brand identity. The elaborate baroque detailing, the undulating floral prints, the brazen use of embroidery and sequins – not to mention the duo’s dab hand at sassy suiting – whether it’s seen on the runway or strutting down the street, Dolce & Gabbana designs are undeniably recognisable. As Gabbana emphasises: “Your identity is very important. If you lose your identity, you lose your personality.” And the designers have built an empire on this persona, much of which rests heavily on Sicilian imagery – think strong Catholic references

Rotana to manage new five-star hotel in the Republic of Zambia Further strengthening its presence in the African market, Rotana signed a hotel management agreement with Grandview Hotels and Resorts Limited to manage a new five-star hotel in the Republic of Zambia that is scheduled to open in 2021. Set to be situated in the heart of the south-central African country’s capital city Lusaka, the hotel will be the first-ever property to be operated under the Rotana Hotels and Resorts brand in Zambia. The hotel will be in addition to the company’s three operating properties in the African continent, including Al Salam Rotana, Khartoum, Sudan; Kin Plaza Arjaan by Rotana, Kinshasa, DR Congo; and Grand Rotana Resort & Spa, Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. “We are delighted to sign the agreement for a new hotel in Zambia which underpins Rotana’s growing presence in Africa. ‫البداية الصحيحة‪:‬‬ ‫أرانشيني‬ ‫“يعتبر هذا الطبق الشهي من‬ ‫األطباق التقليدية التي تباع‬ ‫في الشوارع اإليطالية‪ ،‬لذا كنت‬ ‫متحمساً لتقديمه خالل عملي‬ ‫في اإلمارات‪ .‬ويعتبر اختياراً‬ ‫ممتعاً من المقبالت‪ ،‬وهو‬ ‫عبارة عن كرات األرز المقرمشة‬ ‫المقلية والمحشوة بحشوة‬ ‫جبن لذيذة‪ .‬تقدم كرات األرز مع‬ ‫مزيج لذيذ من البازالء الخضراء‬ ‫والفطر وجبن فونتينا ذو‬ ‫المذاق الخاص‪ .‬إن امتزاج نعومة‬ ‫الجبن الكريمي مع البقسماط‬ ‫المقرمش هو ما يعطي هذا‬ ‫الطبق سحره ومذاقه”‪.‬‬

‫“قد يبدو طبق اإلسباجتي بسيطاً في مكوناته لكن مذاقه‬ ‫رائع كما أنه طبق خفيف مما يجعله مختلف عن أطباق‬ ‫المكرونة التقليدية األخرى‪ .‬يتم تحضير الطبق بطهي المحار‬ ‫بطريقة بسيطة بإضافة القليل من صلصة الطماطم والنبيذ‬ ‫األبيض اللذان يمتزجان مع العصارة المنبعثة من المحار‬ ‫وماء سلق المكرونة المملح‪ .‬هذه التوليفة تمنح الطبق‬ ‫قوياً لذيذاً‪ .‬يأخذك هذا الطبق اإليطالي األصيل إلى أجواء‬ ‫البحر المتوسط المفعمة بالحيوية واإلثارة والنشاط‪ .‬لكمسة‬ ‫نهائية أحب تزيين الطبق بالبطارخ المطحونة (بيض السمك‬ ‫المقدد‪ ،‬ترف إيطالي)”‪.‬‬ ‫ُ‬

‫عندما يأتي دور تقديم الحلوى فال شيء يضاهى حلو تيراميسو‬ ‫التقليدية التي اكتسبت شهرة عالمية‪ ،‬وتتكون الحلوى من‬ ‫بسكويت ليدي فنجر الذي يرص فوق بعضه في عدة طبقات‬ ‫وقهوة إسبريسو وجبنة ماساكربون الناعمة ويرش فوقها‬ ‫مسحوق الاكاكو‪ ،‬وهذه الطبقات الخفيفة الهشة والنكهة‬ ‫الغنية اللذيذة تجعلها أفضل ما يقدم في نهاية الطعام‪.‬‬

‫تجربة التعرض للرياح الموسمية الماطرة في المشروع الفني الدائم في الشارقة‬

‫مشروع فني تركيبي تكنولوجي أسسه استوديو‬ ‫“راندوم إنترناشيونال” البريطاني المتخصص في تنفيذ‬ ‫األعمال الفنية المعاصرة‪ .‬يسمح المشروع للجمهور‬ ‫بتجربة التعرض لعاصفة ماطرة والسير تحت أمطار‬ ‫داخلية مستمرة دون أن تبتل أجسادهم أو مالبسهم‪.‬‬ ‫ومع مرور الزوار خالل الغرفة المظلمة الزجاجية تتساقط‬ ‫حولهم أمطار يقدر حجمها بنحو ‪ 1200‬لتراً من المياه‬ ‫النظيفة ذاتية التنظيف والمعاد تدويرها‪ .‬ويحدث‬ ‫ذلك بسبب وجود سلسلة من أجهزة استشعار الحركة‬ ‫توقف المطر مؤقتاً لكما شعرت بتحرك الشخص‬ ‫التي ِ‬ ‫من ماكنه مما يشلك دائرة حوله يبلغ نصف قطرها ‪6‬‬ ‫أوال في باربياكن في لندن‬ ‫الغرفة ً‬ ‫أقدام‪ُ .‬عرضت هذه ُ‬ ‫عام ‪ 2012‬ثم في نيويورك ‪ 2013‬ومتحف يوز في‬
