At Rotman Commerce, we take exceptional students and help them grow into accomplished and career-ready young professionals. This year, more than any, the Rotman Commerce Class of 2020 lived up to its moniker, Ready for anything. As this Employment Report details, our business undergraduates rose to meet and surpass historical obstacles presented by the pandemic. When all in-person activities ended in the Spring of 2020, the new virtual reality of learning and support services began to take shape. Graduates faced an uncertain job market as many industries pressed pause to interpret future economic conditions. Despite these challenges, the Class of 2020 exhibited incredible resiliency and determination, attributes which will carry them far in their career for years to come. Employers come to Rotman Commerce seeking critical thinkers
and decision makers to fuel their business. They are also getting empathetic leaders who are innovative, adaptive and inspire others to do the same. More than ever, organizations need to attract smart, accomplished, versatile young professionals who are ready to seize opportunities and tackle the challenges ahead. That’s what a Rotman Commerce graduate is all about. They combine technical skills and real-world experience with a proven ability to jump in wherever they’re needed. Our graduates possess something we call the Rotman Commerce Advantage. It’s what sets them apart: a strong academic foundation, specialized technical skills, developed professional
skills, being part of a diverse and inclusive community, an understanding of their Career Journey and being part of institutional excellence: The Rotman School of Management and The University of Toronto. Ready for anything is more than just a tagline – it’s a promise.

The NYC trip and preparation was immensely helpful in preparing for interviews and networking etiquette. Start going to networking sessions put on by Career Services early. Even if you aren’t there to actually get a job, the experience is invaluable. Leverage the fact that you are in Toronto to meet with people and as many upper year students as you can!
Career Services helped me pursue the necessary experiences that would help me eventually land the job at the firm of my dreams. Having gained so much professionally from Career Services, I was thrilled to give back by sharing my experiences and helping other students as a Management Career Peer Advisor in my senior year.
We prepare our students from day one to understand their career goals and how to reach them. When it comes time for them to pursue employment, they’re confident, capable and ready to thrive.

What I appreciated about my time at Rotman Commerce was the flexibility to architect my degree in a way that aligned with my vision for my future. That freedom allowed me to gain a wellrounded education across all areas of business: from finance, marketing, strategy, accounting, economics, and beyond. My advice to current students is to take advantage of that flexibility; lean into your interests, consider taking a class or two outside of your comfort zone, and enjoy the journey.
I think that it’s crucial to start exploring what you like as early as possible, whether that be going to company events, reading up on industries online or setting up coffee chats. It’s only through that journey that you’ll have an idea of what you want your career to look like upon graduation. If you’re especially fortunate, you may even be able to find a mentor to help guide you through your decisions.
Connections between our students and graduates unlock potential, inspire performance and lead to long-lasting business relationships that nurture success.

Among the constraints and challenges brought on by Covid-19, this year demonstrated just how invaluable the Alumni Mentorship Program is to students. Mentorship took on a whole new meaning and included advice on coping with isolation from friends, tips on zoom meetings and networking from home, and finding a meaningful job when opportunities were scant. The best part for me as a mentor was seeing the students rally around the challenge and find the courage to try a different approach.

Ready to partner: Building strong relationships We’re immensely proud of the partnerships we’ve built with organizations in Canada and across the globe. In working with these employers, we’ve created lasting partnerships that benefit our students and their recruitment needs.
KPMG
We care for diversity in our hiring and appreciate schools with support for inclusion in recruitment processes. We are looking for wellrounded students that have involvement outside of their course work, i.e. campus clubs, community volunteer work. Rotman Commerce students are always polite and personable at every interaction we have experienced. Students come prepared when networking with great questions and usually have done research on the firm in advance. We appreciate that the students at Rotman Commerce get involved on and off campus, helping in the community, and show their passions on their application! RCAS Air conference was a great student-run initiative where we were able to network with candidates from Rotman Commerce – particularly in Accounting. Career Services is always personable and responsive. We really appreciate the efforts in promoting our events and opportunities to students, as it is one of the key channels in how we communicate and promote to students on-campus.

TD Bank
We appreciate that the reputation of the Rotman Commerce Program attracts diverse students from across the globe. These students are smart, inquisitive and well rounded. Our partnership with Career Services is key to the success of our talent strategy to attract the best and brightest students. We have a strong relationship with our Relationship Manager who understands our business and keeps us abreast of trends across the industry. They are fully committed and engaged to ensure our events are a success. The last year has been a challenge for organizations and students to connect virtually. With their support we quickly and seamlessly rolled out our TD Coffee Chat Series. We truly see them as an extension of our team as they are fully committed to our strategy, are always connecting the best students to our opportunities and they effortlessly highlight our brand and support us through busy recruitment cycles. Our participation in the Careers in Capital Markets session provided our TD Securities Recruiter the opportunity to sit on a panel with other companies and answer students’ questions first hand. These focused sessions allow us to openly talk about the opportunities we have and the unique experiences students will receive as part of our co-op/ intern and new graduate programs. The Commerce students are always highly engaged and keep us on our toes with all their great questions.
Nestlé
We partner with universities across Canada that provide opportunities to diverse talent pools. We also look for universities that provide their students with ample resources to learn, grow, and succeed as young professionals. Additionally, we leverage our Ambassador program to enable Nestlé employees to return to their respective universities as alumni to speak to current students about their candidate experience at Nestlé and what is it like to be a Nestlé employee. Rotman Commerce students ask great questions and are open to taking initiative, two very important skills. They graduate with a solid understanding of their strengths and how they will be able to add value to an organization. We hosted two events last year, an Info Session and a series of Mock Interview Sessions. It was the Mock Interview Sessions that the students’ skills were really highlighted, as they had the opportunity to practice giving a real interview with a Nestlé representative and receive immediate feedback on their performance. We were impressed with the preparation the students had done, as well as the calibre of their responses and their past experience.
L’Oréal
