At Rotman Commerce, we take exceptional students and help them grow into accomplished and career-ready young professionals.
Dear Rotman Commerce community,
As we celebrate another successful year, I am excited to share with you the latest employment report highlighting the exceptional career outcomes of our recent graduates.
At Rotman Commerce, we are committed to enhancing our career services to provide more proactive, personalized, and well-rounded support tailored to the needs of our students. We understand the importance of empowering our students with the knowledge, tools, resources and professional skills they need to succeed in their career journeys.
“We take pride in our rich history and accomplishments over the past century, and we look forward to celebrating this milestone with our community.”
That is why we have designed our services to meet students where they are — mentally, physically and digitally.
We are continuously growing our pool of prospective employers across a wider range of industries and geographies to enhance career opportunities for our graduates. Through interaction with these partners, our students can gain valuable insights into their fields, make meaningful connections, and develop their professional skills.
One of the interesting trends coming out of the pandemic is the way it served as a catalyst for entrepreneurial endeavors. In this issue, we profile three innovative Rotman Commerce students.
This year is particularly significant as we celebrate the centenary of the University of Toronto’s undergraduate business program at the St. George campus. We take pride in our rich history and accomplishments over the past century, and we look forward to celebrating this milestone with our community.
I am proud of our graduates’ outstanding achievements and grateful to our staff for their ongoing support. We remain committed to providing our students with exceptional experiences that empower them to achieve their goals and aspirations.
Sincerely,
Mark C. Green Director, Career Services Rotman Commerce

Our supports focus on growing students’ competencies across six broad skill areas.
Self-development
Technical
Rotman Commerce prepares students for more than the strategic, analytic, and quantitative challenges of business; our students also learn to be versatile and well-rounded professionals. The Centre for Professional Skills (CPS) works with both faculty and staff to scaffold professional skill development throughout the four years of the BCom degree.
Through our extensive teamwork initiatives, students become successful collaborators, developing interpersonal skills for managing meetings, giving and receiving feedback, and conflict resolution. Our writing and presentation coaching, workshops, and online resources give students the support they need to become effective, engaging communicators. They also learn the benefits of a growth mindset and the importance of acting with integrity. Using all of these opportunities both inside and outside the classroom, our students graduate with the right balance of knowledge and professionalism, and the skills to be ready for anything.

The RC Career Journey
a model of success in career strategy and planning
The RC Career Journey model is not a linear sequence of tasks, but rather a tool to help individuals navigate their career paths based on their interests, values, skills and aspirations. It emphasizes the importance of making choices that align with personal goals and priorities. The model encourages students to explore various career options and avoid narrowing their focus too early, as this can limit opportunities and lead to disappointment if their desired position is not attainable. The Journey consists of three components: Discover, Develop and Experience.

Discover Develop Experience
In the Discover phase, students identify their strengths and explore potential career paths. They receive guidance from the Career Services team, engage in research and information sessions, and seek mentorship from alumni and professionals. The goal is to gain a comprehensive understanding of their capabilities, interests and values to make informed career decisions. This process is not a one-time event but an ongoing cycle of planning, selfreflection and adaptation.
The Develop phase focuses on building a professional toolkit to effectively communicate one’s skills, experience and personal brand to prospective employers and influencers. Students receive support in crafting resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn profiles and personal branding. They participate in consultations, networking events, workshops and industry-specific sessions to enhance their career management skills. The aim is to equip individuals with the necessary tools and knowledge to navigate the job search process successfully.
The third component, Experience, emphasizes gaining relevant hands-on experience to demonstrate value to employers. Students are encouraged to pursue summer placements, internships, parttime positions and volunteer opportunities. Technical training, case competitions and participation in career treks and conferences further broaden their horizons. Through these experiences, students expand their network, understand workplace practices and refine their career search strategy. Collaboration with peers enhances their learning and provides valuable insights.
A century of building the future. rotmancommerce.utoronto.ca 7
The RC Career Journey is not limited to landing a first job but is a continuous model that individuals can revisit and apply throughout their careers. As social, economic, political and technological changes occur, this model provides a framework for combining learning, planning, agility and creativity.
Innovation at work
the entrepreneurial spirit
As an international student from Belgium, Elfine overcame challenges such as learning a new language and adjusting to a new country. However, she initially struggled with coursework and decided to extend her fouryear program to five. This allowed her to join clubs and work as a teaching assistant and a research assistant as well as to keep up with her studies. Like many students, Elfine found it difficult to decide on a career path. She reached out to Career Services and completed the CareerLeader® assessment, which led her to realize that having a positive impact and driving change was important to her. Her friend suggested consulting, so she attended a networking event at EY and made strong professional connections, one of whom referred her to an opening on EY’s Workforce Transformation team. In securing this role, Eline will help Ernst & Young with their innovation pathway.
As an RC student, Megan conceived the idea of revamping authentic university merchandise. She started a side hustle, U of Meg, which has gained a strong presence at several Canadian universities. Megan credits her Asian heritage and entrepreneurial spirit with driving her forward. She is inspired by her family’s hard work, strength, humbleness and willingness to take risks, qualities she learned from her grandfather and greatgrandfather. She feels her business is an extension of them and what they accomplished in Canada despite their challenges. Facing her own challenges of running a business while being a full-time university student, Megan found a balance by setting boundaries for herself, taking mental health breaks and asking for help. Following her passion for entrepreneurship is her desire to help others, so she also provides guidance to firstyear students.

The RC Advantage the partnership model of
engagement
A model of success
Our student differentiation and corporate partnership model is called the RC Advantage. The RC Advantage focuses on answering three key questions from the perspective of employers: why they should recruit from Rotman Commerce, what they can do to elevate their organization’s brand within the student community, and how they can engage with students as they think about their careers.
Recruiting at Rotman Commerce
We offer one of Canada’s most rigorous undergraduate business programs, which pairs a strong academic foundation with specialized technical skills. Technically, students learn about financial modelling, data analytics, coding/programming and AI.
Students also benefit from programming offered by the Centre for Professional Skills, which provides them with six essential competencies commonly found in corporate environments. Moreover, Rotman Commerce is proud of its diverse student population and as a result, its diversity of thinking.
Elevating a corporate brand
Rotman Commerce provides organizations with numerous opportunities to showcase their brand. This can come in the form of supporting student events, participating in career fairs or funding a scholarship.
These activities allow organizations to make an impact, gain visibility and exposure among the student community and showcase their brand as potential employers. The Career Services team can work with organizations to develop customized marketing and communication strategies to target and engage students effectively.
Engaging with students
To find the best talent for organizations, it is important to get the message out early and start identifying potential candidates well before graduation. The Career Services team works with employers to create engagement opportunities that align with recruiting goals and expand students’ career education. Organizations can participate in various career and industry programs, including the Management Consulting Alumni Program, or industry-led workshops, panel or networking events. Many employers find on-site visits to be a very effective method of giving students first-hand exposure to the workplace.
