DEVELOPING EFFICIENT TECHNOLOGIES

The uniqueness of ROTWILD is not only based on the development of its own technologies and innovative solutions. It is substantially more: the interplay between high-quality frame sets, balanced geometries and optimally matched parts. We demand outstanding quality and constantly strive for perfection, from initial conception to the finished production model.

GIVING SHAPE AND FORM TO

From our inception, we consciously took ROTWILD on a totally independent course, getting tremendous reactions in the bike scene with this unique approach. ROTWILD engineering has a substantial share in this: our concept of high-quality, perfectly functioning frames requires proficiency in the most advanced technology combined with knowledge of the decisive parameters. From ROTWILD’S first world championship title 1996, our bikes displayed our expertise and encouraged us to hold this achievement as the standard for further development.

EXPLORING THE LIMITS AND DEFYING THEM

We use techniques to develop technologies. Our knowledge is based on independent research in cooperation with renowned research institutes in order to implement decisive optimisation principles in the manufacture of high-end frames. In this respect, we are pioneers in process development: for example in the capturing of real-time data. Whether it concerns lightweight construction concepts for racing use or reinforced frame sets for hardcore downhill, the actual potential loads on the terrain influence the design and construction of the respective frame. Because we consider it essential to know the exact demands made on our frame materials, we perform extensive measuring runs with strain gauge test ride prototypes. This elaborate process makes it possible to scientifically examine the shape, strength and

construction type of the respective frame tubes. 3D CAD computer simulations and FEM (Finite Element Method) strength calculations support further development and have become indispensable basic principles in frame optimisation. With them we can work through the initial frame design without losing sight of stability and permanent load capabilities.

UNIQUE TECHNOLOGY

The CHANNEL TUBE tube set, developed by ADP ENGINEERING and built exclusively into our ROTWILD bikes, is the unique result of our engineering processes. With each tube individually designed section per section, each CHANNEL TUBE exactly matches the specific requirements in different areas of application. Whether as a high-quality aluminum alloy or as CFK construction, this state-of-the-art tube set embodies the uniqueness of each individual ROTWILD bike and its individual character. We consider each and every frame component as an original ROTWILD part and at the same time an important element for the performance of the complete frame. Not only do our engineers focus on the optimisation of all main frame components, they also devote themselves to enhancing the specifics. Even something such as the improved design of a dropout, is considered in every detail: function is assessed, meaningful weight reduction is desired, forgings are remodelled and solutions are created, because even this component plays a significant part in the unrivalled performance capabilities of ROTWILD bikes. Independence also means: In every development cycle, we keep the continued advances in our own hands. In 2010 we bring this leading-edge technology once again to a new level with our super-light frame designs and significantly improved lightweight construction factors.

QUALITY HAS TO BE SAFE

THE COMBINATION OF INNOVATION

All ROTWILD frames must be able to handle extreme loads in various dynamic test processes to qualify for serial production release. In this process the forces exerted during the test cycle go far beyond the potential loads in practical conditions. ROTWILD is also a driving force in this respect for new innovative test processes and for partners of choice in the development of new standards. Our claim in this regard: The normal test standards are not sufficient for our engineers for applying to innovative ROTWILD frames. In cooperation with the Technical University of Darmstadt, the German Plastics Institute and the Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability, Fraunhofer LBF, as well as with independent testing institutes we have developed stringent test processes in order to attain even more decisive and reliable values for structural durability: this makes our frames safe. The frames may only be released for serial production after successfully passing this extensive ADP ENGINEERING test process. This way we are certain that the ROTWILD frames are a unique interplay of weight, rigidity, comfort and safety.

AND PARTNERSHIP

Perfect performance starts with the frame, but it does not end there. Therefore, only components from top partners are used. We are convinced: The best suspension only works perfectly when fork and shock absorber fit optimally. Using the latest in parts technology is expected but only makes sense when the frame can also implement this new technology. For example, our suspension specialists cooperate with the leading suspension manufacturers, working closely with their development divisions on joint concepts for the improvement of suspension performance. This is one way ROTWILD contributes ideas in the development stage for our partner’s ultimate production products.

Our partners and suppliers comply with the highest requirements and most stringent specifications of our engineering division. Through their network of scientific experts, top athletes and the best production plants with the most modern manufacturing processes, ROTWILD engineers can rely on tremendous resources. After a sophisticated manufacturing process, the frames are carefully assembled at ADP and ultimately released upon passing final inspection. Continuous quality management throughout the complete manufacturing process guarantees a final product that is optimised for precision, function and finish.

ALS II – THE BRAND-NEW HIGHLIGHT

Competition readiness means extreme loads: More than 15,000 km forest paths and trails, 3,000 km rocks and crushed stone, 1,000 km out-of-saddle bursts / sprints and more than 1,000 km downhill at around 500,000 altitude difference. Those are accomplishments that a professional mountain biker achieves per year with his competition frame. And conditions that a ROTWILD racing bike must face. Factors that must be taken into account for that purpose bring about a sophisticated requirement profile, but the objective is clear: The capacity that the rider brings to the system must be transformed into the highest possible efficiency. Efficiency means thrust and more thrust is simply faster.

FOR THE RACING TRACK

To achieve that objective pure technological knowhow is essential. And thus the ROTWILD development division, along with top riders, devoted themselves to the challenge to transform drive forces into thrust as optimally as possible, and namely without any loss.

Active Linkage System II, that is the new ROTWILD suspension technology, optimised for the demands of tough racing conditions. With the ALS II the perfect chain stay technology is available: Completely driveneutral, permanently open and active. Making it unbeatable in traction and thrust. Full function uphill, in the sprint and in fast downhill rides: The intelligently designed chain stay in combination with the specially matched shock absorbers make an open suspension system, which functions permanently and without sophisticated special technical solutions, possible. When the maximum spring deflection becomes necessary downhill, it makes its reserves available. The ALS II provides 110 mm spring deflection for fast and demanding downhill rides, without negatively affecting the thrust. To improve the traction of the chain stay, special development emphasis was placed on the transfer ratios of the chain stay. The ALS chain stay turns with a constant radius around a fixed pivot point, the lever ratio stays unchanged over the whole spring deflection range. Ideal for optimal shock absorber setup, so that the chain stay can respond particularly fast for maximum traction and riding dynamics. Supported by new, fully filled and sealed industrial ball bearings, which ensure extremely sensitive responding properties at high mileage. The normal drive and braking reactions are unnoticeable.

R.2 FRAME TECHNOLOGY

GEOMETRY OPTIMISATION

ROTWILD is synonymous with cutting-edge technology in frame-building, which is based on years of research into the basic principles and painstakingly developed for various different requirement profiles. Extensively optimised, the new ROTWILD bikes stand for the next level in frame technology.

Performance and thrust are particularly influenced by the centre of gravity distribution and the geometry of the R2 frame is perfectly designed for the purpose. A longer chain stay in combination with a steeper steering tube angle results in significantly improved wheel-load distribution between the front and rear wheels. This makes it possible to reduce the dynamic wheel-load changes = bobbing effect (compression during pedalling) by around 8 %. At the same time, improved climbing power at extremely steep climbs and ramps is experienced. The steeper seat tube angle makes a more centred seating position over the crank possible and provides for highly efficient power input. The lower position of the bottom bracket provides for improved riding safety in fast bend combinations.

Whether a full-suspension racing bike or the ultimate hardtail race bike: the total of the individual components makes a ROTWILD R2 one of the most successful racing bikes on national and international race tracks. The development focus for 2010 is to improve on efficiency, in other words, to convert the power that the rider introduces to the bicycle system into thrust and traction without any loss.

TUBE SET OPTIMISATION

The lay-up of all carbon tubes and frame components with regard to weight and rigidity was improved for the R2, with special attention to the bottom bracket area. To increase the drive efficiency, the bottom tube was completely newly developed and its bending and torsional rigidity was optimised. In combination with the equally newly developed BB92 press-fit bottom bracket the bottom bracket rigidity is increased by 20 % at the same weight.

Efficient, lightweight, resilient and overall with maximum performance. No other system allows for lighter construction and is more suitable for racing use. The ALS II is an integral component of the new R.R2 frame concept with a thrust action never experienced before.

ROTWILD R2 – the unique frame concept combines the highest possible efficiency in everyday racing: The new monocoque chain stay provides maximum tyre room even in the most adverse weather and track conditions. The possibility to use two water bottles predestines the R2 frame not only for use in World Cup racing but also for long marathon distances.

Light and fast, but with more travel, slightly plusher and with a more relaxed seat position compared to the competition models and their race against the clock. The C bikes are characterised through their high degree of integrity and suitability for everyday use. The ROTWILD development division has revised the frame construction and kinematics once more for 2010 and clearly enhanced crucial details. The choice of kinematic system plays a significant role in the efficiency of a bike. For rear shock travel from 120 mm to 150 mm, ROTWILD relies on the independently developed XMS technology, whose functional advantages come to fruition exactly in this area. The basic concept of the sealed cartridge bea-

rings and maintenance-free XMS has already proven its perfect function in numerous tests; yet for 2010 it has been fine-tuned to optimise the ride.

The perfect geometry consists of many factors. Fine tuning was achieved through adjustments to top tube length. In addition, the stand-over was lowered by using a special, newly designed semi-hydroformed tube with integrated saddle tube gusset, in order to attain more legroom.

The latest technology was also applied to the rear shocks. A FOX shock with boost valve technology specially matched to the R.C1 FS, is exclusively available to ROTWILD. The use of a shorter shock absorber reduces the tilt of the seat stays and makes a more compact design possible. The activation of the newly developed linkages (deflection lever) optimally positions the virtual pivot point within the line of chain tension. The chain stay remains almost unaffected by the effects of the drive and instead significantly increases traction during pedalling (= positive anti-squat effect).

Meticulous attention is paid to each and every structural component. Through careful redesign of both the frame and the CNC parts, a weight reduction of more than 10 % was achieved. The XMS system cleverly allows the seat post to be fully lowered and also the carrying of a water bottle.

Based on the tube set adapted for All Mountain use the main focus of the development lays in the special geometric construction as well as in the modification of the XMS suspension system. This latest generation in suspension technology was exactly aimed at the full package of the new R.X1 All Mountain. With a clearly noticeable advantage: Perfectly balanced handling and riding comfort. ALL MOUNTAIN GEOMETRY

Also in suspensions with more spring deflection the following applies: The geometric construction determines the focal point and thus influences the handling and riding comfort. Therefore, the ROTWILD engineers have designed the R.X1 frame for All Mountain use much more compact, so that the seat position is more upright, providing the best control. Through the shorter top tube the centre of gravity shifts forward, simultaneously exerting more pressure on the front wheel. Resulting in more downhill control.

The height of the bottom bracket was also optimally adjusted: On the one hand high enough to ride over roots and other obstructions without getting caught. On the other hand low enough to keep the centre of gravity low enough not to lose speed and motion around fast bends. In addition, the matching steering angle provides for a smooth and safe ride.

Apart from more spring deflection the Enduro application requires a suspension with highly sensitive responding properties. Just as much as problem-free pedalling and controlled downhill handling.

ALL MOUNTAIN SUSPENSION TECHNOLOGY

The new development of the four-bar linkage system XMS aimed at a spring deflection range from 145 mm: The fork and shock absorber are perfectly matched to the suspension and frame. In the R.X1 the exclusive FOX shock absorbers with boost valve technology are used. Depending on the respective shock absorber position the innovative boost valve technology regulates the level of pressure absorption at compression via a control valve. This technology absorbs sudden impacts substantially better and provides for example for a softer landing after a jump. Together with the fork that can be lowered the climbing properties are not neglected.

The tried and tested ROTWILD four-bar linkage XLS combines precisely these properties in an innovative structural design and fully brings its superior strength to bear. Jumps and drops, fast root passages and wash board sections, steep turns with high compression and challenging speed tracks. In the gravity segment frame and chassis have to face high loads and require a lot of travel with a very sensitive response. All bikes of the ROTWILD Extreme Series are based on the same XLS four-pivot suspension system. However, since trail-pilots have different demands than descent orientated BigBike riders, the different bikes, their frames, and their kinematic systems are exactly adjusted to the required travel and the range of use. The XLS system of the R.E.D. bikes offers outstanding traction over a wide range of suspension without noticable influence of drive. At the beginning of the travel the rear wheel reacts very sensitively, at the same time enough rebound strength is available, in order to push the rear wheel right back to the ground, even after large obstacles (= so called footprint). The system plays out it’s entire constructive strength on difficult descents: On the one hand it can be ridden with considerably more SAG (=negative travel). On the other hand the positioning of the main bearing in front of the bottom bracket makes an optimisation

of the position of the virtual pivot point possible, also in terms of the wheel path. The wheel path idealy follows the dive in path of the rear triangle. This way, even large bumps get absorbed effectively. The occuring impact-energy is transformed into suspension energy.

R.E.D. TRAIL [CARBON REAR TRIANGLE 175 MM]

For trails and touring the R.E.D. Trail features a high neutrality in drive, and a kinematic, which offers a maximum in traction. For more agility, the ROTWILD engineers constructed the XLS rear triangle with carbon seat- and chain-stays. This technology, which has been tested in the downhill World Cup, reduces the weight of the rear triangle. This results in a sensitive response behaviour and offers enough latitude for wide tires, while being very stiff. Double or triple chainrings can be used, that way the R.E.D. Trail can live up to it’s name.

Eventually, due to the special linkage of the XLS system this results in a linear, extremely flat decline of the transmission ratio, which leads to a continuous increase of the rear triangle progression. This ensures a maximum of puncture protection for example when landing after jumps.

R.E.D. FR [REAR TRIANGLE 200 MM]

The low centre of gravity and the rugged construction of the used linkages are suited for the hardest use. The rear triangle is very easy to tune. Therefore the complete range of travel can be used.

The high fun-factor and the unconditional free riding suitability of the R.E.D. FR are a result of its compact frame construction. Besides the CHANNEL FR tubeshape, which has been constructed just for the free riding use, especially the kinematic of the R.E.D. FR has been perfectly balanced. The lower bottom bracket, which has been horizontally moved

to the back, increases the control in turns and during jumps. The rear triangle offers a progressive response behaviour for a high puncture protection, and short chain-stays. This way the bike can be handled easily and agile. R.E.D. DH [REAR TRIANGLE 220 MM WITH GEOMETRY ADJUSTMENT SYSTEM]

The downhill-chassis with XLS top technology for increased traction, senstitve response behaviour, and high stability. This is what every tube of the R.E.D. DH has been especially optimised for. The tubes face the high loads with elaborate conifications and inside gussets. The frame geometry can be adjusted individually, by the 5-step frame adjustment system. Seat- and steering-angle, bottom bracket height, and wheelbase can be adjusted. Perfect: For any terrain and track the matching set-up.
