Rouge Magazine is the first and only fashion magazine at the University of Georgia. It was originally founded in August 2007 as “The Little Red Book Magazine” by three students within the College of Family and Consumer Sciences who recognized a need for a fashion-oriented publication. It became an official, registered student organization in 2008 and underwent a complete rebrand over the summer of 2019, including its name change to “Rouge Magazine.” From content production, social media management, event coordination, and down to the nitty gritty details of our full-print publication, every element of our magazine represents a labor of love created entirely from scratch each semester solely by the students at the University of Georgia. We boldly wear our hearts for fashion on our sleeves and we are so thankful to be a part of something so deeply rooted in our passions. Rouge Magazine is distributed all over Athens, from multiple locations on campus to various boutiques downtown, and aims to create content that inspires the student body to be bold, to serve as a resource for fashion related events from a variety of perspectives, and to stitch together a publication each semester that all students can draw something from. We hope that this publication represents something more than well-styled clothes on models, but rather a chance for people to be united under one roof, all collectively working towards the same goal: to show the world that fashion is more than clothes. Fashion is our identity, our self-expression, and our loudest voice. Let’s Get in Touch. IG: rouge.mag YouTube: Rouge Magazine Email: editors.rouge@gmail.com Web: rougemag.squarespace.com

Freshman year can sometimes feel like you are in the washing machine on spin cycle-we know. It can be overwhelming and challenging and hard and confusing on many levels even without a global pandemic, and we recognize that having all been through it too. This summer, the Rouge Magazine executive board and general body worked together to curate this guide with the intention of making things a little easier for you. We want to help you feel at home and point you in the right direction where we can. Polling our members and executive board, we collected random advice and good habits we learned to pick up early, among other things, all through trials and errors of our own. Some of our favorite places in Athens for example were found later in the year or even later in our college careers, so we want to give you a bit of a head start-- we are here for you & we are cheering you on! And if you are interested in fashion, marketing, journalism, PR, photography, videography, beauty, graphic design, social media, or blogging-- consider this your personal invitation to join the Rouge community. We hope this zine helps, and that you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed creating it--

Making connections and putting yourself out there are more important than a 4.0!

Try to walk to class more than taking the bus, it’s good exercise and you enjoy the beautiful campus more. Go to the Main Library! Some people never set foot inside and it’s a mistake!

Ask for help when you need it.

Do laundry in the early mornings to avoid crowds.

What I Gained From

ROUGE MEMBER TESTIMONIES “I have learned that you can literally do anything you set your mind to! I have seen some of the most incredible college students make a way in the fashion industry, and it blows my mind that we’re the same age! I think Rouge is different because there is an outlet for everyone and no matter what your talent is, you can get involved somehow.”

“While I have only recently joined the Rouge family, I have already made friendships and found a community of like-minded people who value creativity and ambition. Joining Rouge has allowed me to make valuable connections and given me a creative outlet to express myself and collaborate with others.”

“Joining Rouge has helped me find my place at UGA. I’m so thankful I get to surround myself and work with so many students with similar passions! I can’t wait for this upcoming year, and I’d recommend anyone who has even the slightest interest to try joining! I guarantee you won’t want to leave.” “I have met such inspiring and talented people through Rouge. If you love fashion and beauty, there’s definitely something at Rouge for you. We have so many different committees to meet people and grow, and it’s truly been my favorite club at UGA! I’ve gotten better at taking photos, writing articles, and getting more comfortable talking to new people. We always put on such cute events throughout the year, my favorite one was our “_alentine’s Day” event last year where we had donuts, a photo wall, a card-making station, and free makeup and chocolate! Rouge is what you make of it—you can choose how involved you want to get (but I recommend going all in, you won’t regret it)!” “It’s a really fun, creative outlet, you get to meet/get closer with people with similar interests and majors, it’s so gratifying to get to hold your end result and know you contributed to it, even if it was just something little.” “I was looking for a place on campus where I could write about things that I care about and topics that are interesting to me. It’s such a collaborative place where all ideas are considered and everyone has the opportunity to work on projects they love. It’s so amazing to be included in a space with so many creative, lovely and innovative people! It truly feels like a little community.”

“By joining Rouge, it truly opened my eyes to what I want to pursue in the future. Before Rouge, I was so confused on what I wanted to do with my life and major but after strengthening my skills through this organization, I now know what I want!” “Rouge was the first moment my freshman year where I felt like I clicked with a group on a large scale-- I found other girls who were just as creative and driven as me. I found all of the upperclassmen super inspiring! Everyone is a girlboss.” “I joined 2nd semester and wasn’t involved in much because of COVID, but the magazine looks amazing and when I received it I got so excited to start contributing to something I could be proud of!”
