I’ve loved researching it, and I have to say it was really hard to decide who to mention as we have so many brilliant people here, I hope you take the time to listen to one or two of the artists that we feature, or maybe go along to one of the two great events happening at the Regent in Ipswich soon Star for A Night and Generation Sound both of which feature Suffolk’s new talent. On a different note I’m sure some of you are wondering if I kept to my promise last month to start getting fit – well I have! I’ve been training on the Power Plate at Bentwaters Studio 2 or 3 times a week and I’ve been really pleasantly surprised at how quickly I’m improving. I can also see the difference a little in my clothes and was thrilled when I was measured a month after starting and found I’ve lost a whopping 18 inches already! I’ve also started training for the Race for Life with my sister and friends but have to admit I’ve been fairly rubbish at that so far and only been out 3 times! Please feel free to embarrass me into trying harder by sponsoring me at www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/gemmathompson10 A final note, we did receive a couple of complaints about a certain word published within a poem last in last month’s edition. I’d like to take this opportunity to apologise for any offence caused, I did think long and hard about whether to include the poem in an unedited version. I eventually decided that editing the word would have a negative effect on the poem as a whole. Please be assured that language of this nature is not used commonly in our publication, and this is not the start of a slippery slope.

Sounds of Summer

Festival season is starting and soon the air will be filled with the sounds of summer. It’ll be fantastic to welcome so much talent to Suffolk, from the likes of Pink playing at Portman Road to The Beat, Gideon Conn and Audioporn at Hatchfest, The Zutons and Newton Faulkner at Jimmy’s Farm Festival and not forgetting Florence and the Machine, Belle and Sebastion, Corrine Bailey Rae and Vampire Weekend at Latitude. Playing host to these amazing talents is wonderful, but let’s not forget our home-grown talent! Here in Suffolk we have a vast amount of musicians from classical to punk, in the next few pages I’m throwing the spotlight on some of the best that have come to my attention this year, there are many others too so I urge you to turn off Britain’s Got Talent, flick through the What’s On pages and see Suffolk’s Got Talent too!
Nathan Williamson is the man behind the Southwold Concert Series The idea of the Southwold Concert Series is simple: music of the highest level ‘in your own back yard’. They aim to build on a close, grass-roots connection between the performers and audiences, knowing that this needs no compromise on quality but creates more direct communication between performer and listener. “We welcome feedback and suggestions from all our attendees, and indeed are often overwhelmed by the response and enthusiasm we receive!” says Nathan. The series is still in its infancy, but is growing fast. So far they have presented six concerts, given by some of the finest young artists in the UK: the last was by clarinettist Mark Simpson, winner of BBC Young Musician in 2006. Nathan continues, “The Series is evolving day by day – we are always looking for ways to make concert-going a fun and thrilling experience. We welcome everyone to join us in bringing music of the highest quality to Southwold and the area.” They round off this season with the premiere of scenes from Nathan’s own opera, A Fountain Sealed, on June 26th. Another first – full-scale opera in Southwold! The catalyst behind all these events is the tremendous support of the Series Patrons, Spring, their sponsors Adnams, and many other private individuals who have made kind donations in return for special privileges through their ‘Friends’ scheme. SUCCESSFUL Suffolk - born musician Cevanne Horrocks Hopayian received Arts Council Funding that helped her launch her debut album ‘BIG EARS’ this March. A grandchild of Armenian refugees and Lancashire coal workers, Cevanne spent her childhood years in Aldeburgh and studied at Farlingaye High School in Woodbridge. She says “The album brings together a myriad of musical beats that I have gleaned from across the globe, and reflects a point in my childhood when I went partially deaf for a while and could hear vibrations and sonorities that I otherwise would have ignored.” With this in mind, her energetic ‘experimental pop’ debut album encourages people to open up to the sounds and cultures that exist around them. Now, at the age of 23, Cevanne is a prize-winning graduate from Cambridge University, who has also studied at Trinity College of Music in London and has toured Britain with internationally renowned artists. However, Cevanne has always remained true to her roots despite how far she has travelled. Last year, the talented musician organised a magical series of Peter Pan themed concerts she named ‘Out of Neverland’ because J.M. Barrie had a hand in designing the meare in Thorpeness. “We wanted to bring high quality arts to the area which has some of the highest rates of social exclusion in the UK. Peter Pan is for everyone and ‘Out of Neverland’ is for Suffolk.” Cevanne produced ‘BIG EARS’ herself not through a contract with a record label. Asked why she chose this route, she said: “It was so important to me that my debut album had only my own limitations upon it. An independent release gives me the freedom to write, develop and sound how I want to.” Her upbeat and offbeat tunes journey from a deep reggae beat with an electronic twist to a series of melodic vocals with a subtle classical edge. She performed the ‘BIG EARS’ pilot material recently at East London’s Passing Clouds club, to raise money to build a sustainable housing cooperative in South East London. And her staccato beats, quirky sounds and incredibly energetic performance had a huge effect on the audience with people singing along, dancing, jumping and shouting to the weird and wonderful sounds she created.

Cat Madden is a talented young singer songwriter from Bury St Edmunds. She has been composing
on piano and guitar from the age of 12 and further developed her song writing and performance whilst at King Edwards School, in a few more months she’ll be off to study music at the British Academy of New Music in London. Her music is drawn from her own life observations, the style and emotion in Cat’s voice draw comparisons with artists such as Laura Marling, Norah Jones, Eva Cassidy and as her voice matures; Alanis Morisette and Dido. But take a listen and you’ll hear for yourself that she has a unique style and tone that you can’t help falling for. Cat has sung on the famous Snape maltings stage at Aldeburgh in front of 800 as well as cosy gigs in local pubs and clubs. BBC radio recently played a track from her new EP ‘Just Cat’ and qualified for the regional final of Live and Unsigned. 9 A Fate Untold are a 4 piece pop-punk band from Ipswich consisting of David Housden, Vocals and guitar, Matthew Hurrell, Vocals and guitar, James Moss, Bass, and Todd Emanuel, Drums and vocals. With their blend of poppy choruses and jump along hooks, they set out to give a memorable performance show after show. If you like Blink 182 or Busted you should definitely give them a listen! Since forming late 2008 they’ve played 100+ shows, each one more energetic than the last. Their song writing is full of teenage angst and past experiences, keeping a positive spin on things and giving people a deep meaning whilst putting a smile on their faces. Their 1st EP, ‘You Can’t Motorboat a Personality’, sold out of it’s 1st batch of copies within a month of being released, and continues to sell. Their 2nd EP, ‘Win By Default’, was released on the last month and contains 4 bright, snappy pop-punk songs that will certainly open up doors for these lads. This was recorded and produced by London based independent label The Animal Farm. With the hype surrounding them right now, it won’t be too long before their name is on the lips of many others. With an upcoming 2 week tour in August, and many other shows scattered across the country, the future is certainly looking bright for AFU. You can see them at The Old Maltings Bury St Edmunds on the 5th of June or at PJ McGinty’s on the 26th of June. Catch them at a show near you, before it’s too late!
10 Ipswich singer/songwriter KingOfTrash has just released his debut album Mythology, an unapologetic collection of high-end Pop tracks. One of my personal favourites, ‘Bring me down’, blends an upbeat technopop feel, an inspirational lyric and the hauntingly beautiful melody of ‘Enola Gay’. He says that ‘Until recently, Pop has been seen as the easy option in the World of music, if only that were the case,’ he smiles. ‘I’ve had to work really really hard to put together this album but I have to say that the incredible reception it’s had makes the whole process really worthwhile.’ However there is more to Tyrone Lee Needham (the man behind the name!) than creating party anthems, EACH (East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice) ‘Treehouse Appeal’ have adopted his track ‘Rainbow Never Dies’ He says ‘ I am thrilled It’s a cause very close to my heart - I believe very much that charity starts at home, and, I am humbled to think that my song can bring a little peace to those families at a time of great sadness, and of course all proceeds from the track are being donated to the charity, so go and download it now from our reverbnation site, www.reverbnation.com/kingoftrash He’ll also be playing his first festival this year, he told me ‘I’ve been asked to perform at NRGFest - the thought of getting up there in front of several thousand screaming fans is a little daunting, but hey, I’m just gonna do my thing and really raise the roof!’ Mythology is available for download either as an entire album or track-by-track and even ringtones from www.reverbnation.com/ kingoftrash. BBC Introducing to take over Hachfest stages! This year’s 3 day music festival will be held from 30th July to 1st August, at Mutimers’ Meadow in the village of Hacheston, near Wickham Market. The event will begin on Friday evening and will continue all day on Saturday and Sunday, providing a great weekend of entertainment for all the family. One of the highlights planned for the 2010 event is the BBC Introducing sessions. The team from BBC Radio Suffolk will be taking over the Hachfest stages on the Saturday afternoon, and have been given free reign to showcase the best acts from the BBC Introducing selection, which supports unsigned, undiscovered and under the radar musicians. Other acts confirmed for 2010 include The Beat, Gideon Conn and Audioporn.

The Beat became an overnight success in the 80’s scoring such hits as ‘Tears of a Clown, Mirror in the Bathroom, Too nice to talk to and a soulful cover of the Andy Williams song ‘Can’t Get Used to Losing You’!
Gideon Conn’s shows are breath-taking from start to finish. With a cheeky smile he makes the audience jump for joy, sigh with delight then leave asking what they have just seen and when can I hear it again? He has performed, with his band, at major festivals and toured with some fantastic artists including Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, 6 Day Riot and Jason Mraz. He released a catchy, hip hop/indie crossover single called ‘I Want You Around’ which was well received by radio - playlisted on Xfm and awarded breakfast single of the week on BBC 6 music as well being championed by Huw Stevens and Rob da Bank on Radio 1. Gideon’s debut album entitled ‘New Bop Sounds’, is due for release in March 2010. The first single from the album is called ‘Londonderry’, and was released in December 2009. It is a beautiful song, memorable for its unabashed simplicity and ability to capture your heart and mind.
Hachfest are pleased to be welcoming one of the UK’s most popular and influential Ska Bands ‘The Beat’, who will be headlining the 2010 Saturday Line-up.
The band toured the world with artistes such as David Bowie, The Police, REM, The Clash and The Specials. The current band line up includes original members Ranking Roger and Everett Morton, plus ex. Dexys Midnight Runners and General Public Keyboard player Mickey Billingham and also features Roger’s Son Murphy ‘Ranking’ Jr.
This exciting young Mancunian musician may well be familiar to anyone that went along to ‘Harvest at Jimmy’s’ last year – he certainly struck a chord with Hachfest committee members, who are very pleased that he has agreed to appear at Hachfest this year!

Sara Thomas – Superstar Snapper!
How does a respectable wife, mother and wedding photographer by day turn into a Rock Photographer by night? That was the question I had for Sara Thomas, photographer of the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Prodigy, Blondie, Manic Street Preachers, Robert Cray, James Brown, Supergrass, Lemar, and many more. “Well it started when in 2001, I had taken time off to have the children and when my youngest started nursery I decided to focus on finding a career I could really love, so I started a 2yr full time photography course. I had thought I would like to be a food photographer but I found out that that would involve a lot of prep followed by just one shot I like to be on the edge and think on my feet so I started thinking of different aspects of photography and really enjoyed the photojournalist part of the course” Then fate jumped in, one of her favourite bands Supergrass was playing locally so her husband
just phoned them up and asked if there was any chance of a photo pass for her. Surprisingly they said yes, probably because of her student status so she went along and absolutely loved it. She says, “I learnt a lot there – I learnt that you only get to stay in the box for the first 3 songs, there’s no flash and it’s a really bad idea to wear a white shirt!” After that she was hooked and anything coming locally she would contact them, sometimes she was successful and afterwards she would always send a link so the artists could see the work. Once, Grammy award winner Robert Cray chose her shot to promote his next tour. After college she started working for the Cambridge Evening News photographing bands appearing locally. “It was fun but as the photo’s needed to be on the desk by midnight I often could only stay for the 3 songs then would have

to head out to edit the photo’s and get them in on time – sometimes I would stay later if it was a band I really wanted to see though!” She also works with an agency in London but finds it much harder to do that because of the transport links between here and London. “I wish we had a proper venue here in Ipswich, the Regent is a great venue for theatre but as the seating isn’t removable it’s not ideal for live music. Hopefully with the University and all the regeneration that’ll be something that we get soon - I’m hoping to start working with local bands more, there are some great talents out there so I’d love to support them too.” The favourite band ever to photograph were the Red Hot Chilli Peppers at Hyde Park, they were doing the weekend in London then going off to do some other dates before coming back to Hyde Park on the Wednesday. She told me “I couldn’t get in to photograph them on the first 2
nights as that was reserved for the likes of NME and the BBC but I could go on the Wednesday. As it happened the weather for the first 2 gigs was awful, but on the Wednesday it was glorious, the perfect summer evening. The sun was going down, gorgeous light on the stage, a light breeze As you know I’m only allowed to photograph for the first 3 songs but when they play they jam for about 10 minutes first which doesn’t count as the song so you’ve got much longer than normal, and because they warmed up and the audience is getting into it there’s a much better atmosphere. To me a really good rock photograph isn’t so much about the flash and blur that you’ll see in things like NME, I like to capture expressions, the small moments when the artist is so absorbed in what they’re doing and are just lost in the music”

Dealing with Dementia

In these times when society is so hard on the elderly caring for a relative with dementia can be an exhausting emotional and physical experience. Lack of support and guidance means that carers often feel isolated and lonely which adds to the sadness of seeing a loved one dealing with such a debilitating disease. But there is in fact a great deal that can be done to enrich the lives of both the person with dementia and the people caring for them. Undoubtedly one of the key requirements is that carers have the energy and the positive outlook needed to provide such care.

The Fabric of Success Suffolk Entrepreneurs 8th book is launched! Karin Hellaby ‘s life, like many people’s, has been a patchwork of joy and adversity. But this lady knows that it really doesn’t matter how small the scraps we’re left with are – it’s what we make with them that counts. She wrote her first book simply because she was bringing up 3 children on her own. Her eldest son was 18 and wanted to go to University. Having been to University herself (Karin is a fully qualified teacher), she was determined to support her son through this. Although she already owned Quilter’s Haven it was still very early days in the business so things really were hand to mouth at the time. She suddenly decided to write a book! She says, “I knew I could do it because I have a teaching degree so I know how to write lesson notes which is basically what my books are. It took me about 6 months to write and I had people testing every chapter but I did face challenges such as finding a graphic designer – an area I knew nothing about back then. I also knew there were 2 ways to go with it, I could
either write it then put it with a publisher to see if they would take it but that could take 2 to 3 years and I needed to get some profit from it quickly for my son. I knew that way would be the better way to go to become famous but I wasn’t interested in that. So I then remortgaged my house to self publish it; luckily for me it was an immediate success and went international straight away! Since then she’s written a further seven books and become a sought after teacher around the world, particularly in America where she teaches at least twice a year. She told me “I wrote Sew Simple Pineapples about 18 months ago now and I knew it was going to be a success because when I was teaching in the States (where quilting is huge) I showed them the technique and their jaws just dropped! These knowledgeable people, often owners of quilt shops themselves had no idea such an easy-to- do technique could be developed. It was my technique, my idea and they just loved it! The Pineapple technique had traditionally been very complicated involving all kinds of rulers and grids but this way it takes just a minute! I thought I could go further with this hence my new book Sew Simple Pineapple Plus that has more interesting designs.” With Karin’s youngest son about to start University I think we can safely say she’s ‘sewn’ them the way! Festivals in May... The East Anglian Dragon Boat Festival 9 May, Nicholas Everitt Park, Oulton Broad, Lowestoft In this spectacular dragon boat race crews of up to 11 people will battle it out in a series of fast and furious heats and finals over a 200m course in 30’ dragon boats to raise funds for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices. The East Anglian Dragon Boat Festival has to date raised more than £75,000 for EACH and you can help increase that amount.

Bury St Edmunds Fringe Festival 2010 1 – 14 May, Bury St Edmunds With a wealth of comedy, music and all manner of entertainments we proudly present a packed schedule of events which celebrates and showcases Suffolk and East Anglian talent. The majority of performers appearing during the fortnight are from the East of England, although we admit we’ve enticed a few back from their (inter)national careers! Those who aren’t locals are here because they believe in the Fringe and our emphasis on community and the ‘feel-good’ factor. A party night will signal the start of this year’s Festival, with a Queen and Madness Tribute Night to set the ball rolling. The popular outdoor gigs in the Abbey Gardens are spread over two Fridays to give revellers a great start to Festival weekends. The traditional Beating Retreat sunset ceremony moves to close the Festival and the town’s first Food and Drink Festival celebrating the best of local produce will be hosted by Bury St Edmundsbased brewers Greene King. This year will also see the formation of a Festival jazz orchestra, plus adult and youth choirs to perform world music with South African band Mbawula, while local musicians can showcase their talents by busking around the town. The region, with its softly undulating landscapes, pretty villages and magnificent cultural heritage, is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the fresh air while exploring its countryside on foot. Walks range from gentle 2-3 mile rambles to longer and more energetic outings of up to 12 miles through Suffolk’s beautiful countryside. Many include lunch and afternoon tea stops with a chance to sample some fresh local produce, while for others walkers are asked to bring their own picnic.

Featuring around 30 guided walks in a variety of locations to suit different tastes and fitness levels. A different kind of walking festival, it includes outings accompanied by a poet and storyteller plus photographic and twilight nature walks.
Special interest outings include Wildlife Discovery walk on 15th May and an early morning walk on 22nd May around Arger Fen to watch and hear the dawn wildlife. On four of the routes walkers will be joined by poet and performer Dean Park, who will recite poems and stories along the way. There will be a photographic walk on 22nd May starting out from the Beyond the Image Gallery at Thornham Magna, and a visit to the sites associated with the famous murder of Maria Marten in the Red Barn at Polstead on 23rd May. There are also several walks for the younger audience such as Mister Stevenson’s Light Railway on 31st May, which follows the route of the ‘Middy’ to discover how to interpret landscape clues, and the Scavenger Hunt at Thornham Walks – a gentle afternoon stroll through the woods hunting for a given list of items. Many walks are free, for others the prices range from £2 to £20 per person (the latter includes lunch); dogs are allowed on some walks but must be kept on a lead at all times.
