Bringing Art to All! Jenny Partridge, the travelling artist now settled in Suffolk.

I’ve yet to meet an elitist artist, and I’m glad to report that Jenny Partridge, co-owner of The Romany Studio in Tunstall is about as far from elitist as you can get! This talented artist has dedicated her life to making art as accessible as possible. In the 70s she and her partner (another talented artist Nigel Cassedine) gave up their London jobs and travelled round Britain in an ex-ambulance. She says “We had exhibitions in little village halls and anywhere there was a bit of space, it was all about selling the art really cheap!” During this time she met a publisher, who asked if she would like to create children’s books, even though she immediately thought ‘oh god I can’t write!’ She gave it a go and produced some woodland characters and a small novel

to go with it. As she was unknown the publisher thought it would be better to start off with four small books. Then she did four more and so on and then published the novel she had written earlier. After bringing art into children’s lives in such a sweet and gentle way Jenny and her partner, parents themselves by then, decided to recreate the ethos they’d had with the travelling art studio but this time in a fixed place. They’d always had a love affair with Suffolk and were visiting frequently so in 2002 they settled in Tunstall and Romany Studio was born. Jenny continued with her art and combines her loves of cooking, gardening and drawing things to evolve her style. “I call it illustration but its just how I see things really, I see things in rows! It’s a way of painting that’s not just a still life.” All her pieces are originals rather than prints and are

very affordable; the smallest unframed prints start at around £5 – £25. Even the biggest pictures are unlikely to be more than £150. This is because Jenny believes that we have to have beauty around us and she wants to make sure people don’t feel frightened about ‘investing’ in art, “if you like the look of something and you want to live with it, that’s the best thing.” “Spring and summer are my favourite times with lots of fruit and vegetables to paint.” She tells me she is working all the time; “I still paint in the winter as well to ensure I have stock. We often move things around so people don’t worry that buying something will mess the exhibition up! The idea is if you are passing by you can take it with you.” The studio is actually a co-operative filled with other artist’s work that Jenny and her partner admire. They don’t charge any commission, as

“I see things in

rows! It’s a way of

painting that’s not just a still life.”

they want art to be affordable. They also serve coffee and cakes so you can browse in comfort. The gallery is open 6 months of the year, May to November, and she also shows in other galleries, the Crooked House in Lavenham as well as galleries in Hampshire, Bath and London.

The Energy-saving Hero

By: Gemma Thompson

The local man that helps you save a fortune and the planet! Are you sick of high energy bills? Confused about how to lower your carbon emissions? Or lost in the maze of eco-consciousness? Ever wished someone would just come to your home and show you what’s best for the planet and your wallet? Suffolk’s Green superman Marc Mason of Energy Saving Inspectors can do just that! He can help you make your home energy efficient to save carbon … and your hard – earned cash!

Chris Huhne has announced plans for a ‘Green Deal’ to radically overhaul our homes to lower carbon emissions.

It’s important to start acting now. Chris Huhne our new Secretary of State has announced plans for a ‘Green Deal’ to radically overhaul our homes to lower carbon emissions. He said, “This waste cannot be ignored, households account for a quarter of all carbon emissions.” Right now the government are talking about incentives but how long will it be before there are laws and fines? It’ll be easier and cheaper to put energy saving measures into practice now before we are held hostage by the market of supply and demand forcing the costs of these measures through the roof. Energy Saving Inspectors provide Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs), which give information on how to make your home more energy efficient and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Already all homes bought, sold or rented require an EPC. They rate the energy and carbon emission efficiency of your home using grades from ‘A’ to ‘G’. An ‘A’ rating is the most efficient; the average efficiency grade to date is ‘D’. Marc told me that it costs £75 and on average will create a saving of £300 a year, that’s not a bad return on investment in my book! Marc also offers an exchange ready pack for people selling their homes. He says “It has great benefits, I always compare it to selling a car with no MOT, it’s much harder to do – well how much harder is it to sell a £200,000 house without the buyer knowing the condition it’s in?” For more information on all he offers see his website or just give him a call!

Purple Prince

By: Gemma Thompson

How often have you wanted a local business to really listen to you? That’s exactly what Heather Prince does and it’s taken her business into areas she never dreamed of... Heather is a professional decorative artist. She started offering classes in 2008 with just one student and in less than 2 years it has sky rocketed! This February she opened Purple Prince on Beach Station Road in Felixstowe (around the corner from Charlie Manning’s), a space for everybody who wants to create, and a purveyor of arts and crafts materials to help brighten every corner of your world. One of the reasons Purple Prince has become so popular is the inclusive atmosphere. It really doesn’t matter if you’ve never picked up a paintbrush in your life or if you can give Picasso a run for his money – it’s all about the joy of creating and trying your hand at new things. Heather offers classes in card making, scrap booking, fine art and decorative art and plans

offer jewellery-making classes too. All these have come about because Heather listens to what her customers want. “I had a mother walk in a couple of weeks ago with her daughter asking if we teach children. I have my CRB check because I lead cub scouts and teach Sunday school, so I said yes, because you can’t say no to anything! The next thing I she told me she had a car full of children to bring me the following Saturday! They absolutely love it, and are coming regularly now.” In fact this has led Heather to introduce a holiday club for kids too that runs from 10am to 4pm. I shared with her my curiosity about scrapbooking and she told me “Scrapbooking when we were kids was a big paper book you’d put the odd postcard and photograph in, but now it’s different, there are so many papers and embellishments to decorate your scrapbook with and it’s more personal and interesting than plain old photo albums. It’s huge in America and really catching people’s imaginations here.” Purple Prince is a lovely space, really warm, bright and calming. There is room for 15 people now and Heather plans to raise a gazebo and use the garden area too. You don’t have to have tuition – if you just want somewhere to create go in and do just that for a trifling £2 an hour and the paint you use. Heather also sells the materials so you won’t have to waste hours online searching for it. So what are you waiting for? Go along to Purple Prince and get creating!

Perfect Picnic Recipe

By: Gemma Thompson

Summer is a great time for picnics, so I asked local food aficionado Polly Robinson of Food Safari (www.foodsafari.co.uk) to provide us with the perfect picnic recipe, she kindly sent us her recipe for Quiche Lorraine, using the best Suffolk cheese of course! Quiche Lorraine Pastry Shortcrust pastry 175g white flour 75g butter pinch of salt beaten egg or water to bind Sieve the flour and salt into a large bowl. Cut the butter into cubes and rub into the flour with your fingertips, keeping everything as cool as possible, until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs. Add just enough beaten egg or water to bind the mixture with a fork and then bring the pastry together by hand. Cover in cling film and leave to rest for at least 15 minutes.

Filling 1 tbs olive oil 175g streaky bacon cut into 1cm lardons 110g chopped onions 3 organic eggs and 1 egg yolk 300ml double cream 1 tbs parsley, chopped 1 tbs chives, chopped 100g Suffolk Gold salt and pepper Preheat the oven to 180C, 350F, gas mark 4 Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface and fit it into a 23cm tart tin, well greased. Line the shell with greaseproof paper and fill it to the top with dried beans to hold the paper in place. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove the paper and beans. Heat the oil in a frying pan and cook the bacon until crisp. Remove and dry on kitchen paper. Sweat the onions gently in the oil for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, whisk the eggs and egg yolks. Add the cream, herbs, cheese, onion and bacon. Mix and season. Pour the filling into the pastry and return to the oven. Cook for 3040 minutes until the centre has just set. Serve warm with green salad.

Blinded by the Sun?

With the summer months fast approaching a Suffolk based health expert is urging people to protect their eyes from the sun. The dangers of exposing the skin to powerful rays are well documented, but over exposure to sunlight can also seriously damage eyesight. Powerful ultra-violet (UV) radiation from the sun’s rays are a major risk to the eye’s retina and cornea and over exposure can cause serious and sometimes permanent visual impairment. UV exposure can cause cataracts (cloudy formations on the lense inside the eye), Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). and sunburn to the surface of the eye. Children are among those at the most risk from UV rays. Scientific research shows 80% of all UV exposure is in the first 18 years of life, as children’s eyes let in more UV. Laura Zagni, a senior optician at sister companies Wardale Williams and Observatory the Opticians, which have practices in Ipswich, Sudbury, Beccles, Southwold, Haverhill and Halstead , said: “We all know to protect our skin when exposing it to the sun, but people tend to forget about their eyes even though the risks are just as great.

By: Patrick Lowman

“This issue needs to be raised quite significantly as sun damage to eyes is on the increase and it is largely due to the fact people don’t realise the dangers. “If people fail to protect their eyes from the powerful rays generated by the sun they are potentially gambling with their sight.” The best way to protect the eyes from the UV rays is by wearing sunglasses or tinted lenses. Sunglasses, or shades, are largely seen as a ‘trendy’ accessory often sported by film, sports and fashion icons. However, the benefits of wearing sunglasses go way beyond looking good, they also provide significant health benefits. “Wearing sunglasses is something that is considered cool, but they are also the best way to protect eyes from potential damage during the summer season”, said Laura. “These days prescription glasses can easily be upgraded with tinted lenses at very affordable prices, and I advise anyone who hasn’t already to make sure they have sunglasses ready for when the hot weather arrives.”
