Autumn 2016 There is nothing that Round Tablers cannot do when they put their minds and hearts to it. That is never more evident at this time of year as we pull together in our Tables, across our Areas and nationally with our record number of fireworks events, our Santa Sleighs and of course Children in Need. Without question we all fully adhere to the second of our aims and objects that one’s calling offers an excellent medium of service to the community. Thirty years ago, Round Table’s efforts caught the public’s attention grabbing headlines and celebrity endorsements working on a donor campaign for Anthony Nolan, which saw more than 100,000 people signed up in six weeks. Round Table has been linked with the blood cancer charity since it’s very early beginnings and now the two are rekindling the strong bond, with the 30th anniversary a motivation behind this. Tablers can play their part and full details are in the final stages of being finalized but we have dedicated eight pages to Anthony Nolan in this edition in recognition. Please take time to read it. Until next time Macca

THE WOULD BE NINJA WARRIOR E, ROUND TABLE’S OWN RESIDENT A FAMILIAR FACE IN TABLER MAGAZIN Y THE ENTERTAINER WITHOUT A FUNN ME BECO HAS ELL JESTER MATT GUPW . RIOR WAR A NINJ ITV’S AR ON BONE AFTER ATTEMPTING TO APPE

The Solihull Tabler, also known as The Fool Monty, began to obsess about the programme in January, and was spurred on by his wife’s comment that “you’d have cruised that when you were 18”. 35,000 people applied to season 3, and Matt beat the odds to become one of the 300 people to get an audition to go on the show. From there, it all went downhill! With a bout of tendonitis in the wrist, Matt went into the audition weaker than he wanted, but the self-styled Ninjester was determined to get onto TV.

The big moment came – and Matt head-butted a pull-up bar after his wrist gave way and the audition was all over in 20 minutes, with a cut to the forehead and a heavily strapped wrist. However, it wasn’t all over. After a video to the team of Matt asking for another chance, a junior producer let slip that Matt had made it through to filming in July. With three weeks to go, Matt threw himself into Ninja training. Taking to the course in full Ninja gear, he even beat the wall with ease. Now to the real villain of the piece – the rolling log. An old circus prop that is now used in Ninja gyms – where could Matt go wrong? Well, after picking himself up off the floor and realising an elbow shouldn’t feel that way, Matt went on to discover that he had dislocated two bones and fractured his elbow. He is probably the only Jester in the world without a funny bone after it was replaced with a screw. The story may not be over yet as there is still season 4 of the programme… so hopefully we’ll be seeing the Ninjester on our screens in 2018!

WELSH TABLES TEAM UP

TO SUPPORT MIKEY’S WHEELS CHEPSTOW ROUND TABLE, CARDIFF ROUND TABLE AND PONTYPOOL ROUND TABLE RECENTLY TEAMED UP TO RAISE MONEY FOR MICHAEL GRIFFITHS, A NEWPORT RESIDENT WHO HAS MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY.

After Chepstow and District were sent a Facebook request to like a page called “New wheels for Mikey”, the three Tables banded together to help bring a dream to life. After putting Michael’s mum in touch with Muscular Dystrophy UK to fund essential wheelchair modifications, the three groups pledged £1,700, which along with the £1,300 raised by the family, could go towards the deposit for a modified vehicle to fit Michael’s new chair in. This gave Michael the mobility needed to not only get to school but to enjoy days out with the family. As well as making a difference to this young man’s life, Mikey’s story has been the inspiration for the reinvigoration of Newport Round Table. Kevin Jordan, a member of Chepstow Round Table, recognised the need for a Round Table in Newport and was further inspired to set one up after finding out that the old Newport Round Table that folded in 2014 had provided gifts for his mum as a child when Kevin’s grandparents were going through a time of hardship. Kevin is determined that Newport Round Table will return: “To resurrect the Table that brought Christmas to my mum and her brothers and sisters when they were children is surreal.”

Entrants this year included a flying Buzz Lightyear and a flying squirrel who went on to take the crown for furthest flight. As well as the traditional flying event, live music and stalls entertained the public well into the night. Leo Cooper from Ilfracombe Round Table said, “The weather has been fantastic, the standard of craft and people jumping in has been amazing and a great standard of music too”. It’s had a big impact on the local economy, not to mention the money we raise for local good causes. Last year we raised £10,000 and we hope to match that, as every penny goes back into the community”.

RTBI TO SIGN THE ARMED FORCES

COVENANT AT THE MEETING OF THE NATIONAL BOARD IN JULY, IT WAS DECIDED THAT THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION WOULD BECOME A SIGNATORY TO THE ARMED FORCES COVENANT. The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise from the nation to those who serve or have served, and their families, which says we will do all we can to ensure that they are treated fairly and not disadvantaged in their day-to-day lives. The Armed Forces Covenant relies on the people, communities and businesses of the UK to actively support this to make a difference. As we continue to develop links with service organisations, it is important that we establish credibility in this sector. An important part of this is that we are signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant. There is no cost involved in signing the covenant, and it is a public statement of intent and a commitment to maintain our support.

The Round Table members visited the onsite Glasshouse Museum, together with a presentation on the logistics market from David Hidderley of the NFU Mutual Property Investment team and a presentation, about the Eddie Stobart Group. Following the presentations the group headed to the Crick Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (DIRFT) Distribution Centre 420 site, for a tour and concluded with a visit to one of the famous Eddie Stobart trucks. Having decided we all wanted our own truck, we then retired to a country pub for good food, good beer and banter.

Craft cider delights Exeter HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT CRAFT CIDER? WELL, NOT AS MUCH AS EXETER ROUND TABLE AFTER THEIR TOUR – AND CRUCIAL SAMPLING SESSION – AT SANDFORD ORCHARDS BACK IN JULY. As the Exeter boys learned, craft cider is a labour of love and this is reflected in the range of products that can be produced. Following a treat of a cheese board matched with ciders, Exeter suggest that this could produce a whole new Table night!

RIP BOWLING TROPHY CURRENT AREA BOWLING CHAMPIONS, AREA 35, WOULD LIKE TO GIVE A WARNING TO OTHER TABLES ABOUT PILFERED TROPHIES. After losing the trophy to Solihull 41 club at their bar games night, an enthusiastic 41er decided to give the trophy a bit of a clean – with some disastrous results! A tragic warning of what happens when a trophy is misappropriated!

Serving or former Armed Forces personnel can join Round Table and receive six months’ free membership. For more information on our Armed Forces Scheme, go to www.roundtable.co.uk/armedforces-scheme 8 Tabler AutumnEdition

ARMED FORCES SCHEME IN ACTION TREVOR DURHAM (CARDIFF), JAMES FORBES KEIR (PONTYPRIDD AND RHONDDA) AND CARDIFF HONORARY JON INGLEDEW ATTENDED THE CAREERS TRANSITION PARTNERSHIP FAIR IN CARDIFF TO SPEAK TO FORMER AND SERVING FORCES PERSONNEL ABOUT ROUND TABLE. Career Transitions Partnership (CTP) is a joint operation between the MoD and a private firm set up to be the official provider of Armed Forces Resettlement. This careers fair, one of several held around the country on a regular basis, is for those leaving the Armed Forces to talk to potential employers and other groups to re-integrate into civilian life. Most of those are men, and most of them are under 45, many in their 30s, so this was an excellent opportunity to set up a Round Table membership stall. Jon is former Armed Forces himself and ensured that Round Table had a presence at the fair. Eleven guys expressed an interest in Round Table, not only from Cardiff but from further afield including Poole and Dorset. Trevor said; “Ex-Armed Forces members are a good source of new potential Tablers, and this was a very successful event from our point of view. For the sake of a couple of hours of time, we have generated 11 membership enquiries for Round Table. It would be well worth others looking to see what events are being held locally, and getting involved. David Barley and I would be happy to open that door for them.” You can find out what CTP events are being held and where by visiting: www.ctp.org.uk/events

ROUND TABLE AND ANTHONY NOLAN HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF!

AND NOW?

In 1986 Round Table changed Anthony Nolan forever when we recruited an incredible 100,000 people to join the stem cell register in six weeks; giving hope to thousands of people with a blood cancer or blood disorder.

Now we want to do even more! Let’s celebrate the 30th anniversary of our partnership by raising vital funds, spreading the word and for those aged 30 and under, signing up to the stem cell register. It’s time to get creative, Tablers!

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO SAVE A LIFE? SEAN’S STORY Sean Hagan joined the Anthony Nolan register in 2010 after seeing a national appeal. Once he’d signed up he went home and told his mum, ‘I know I’m going to donate to someone, I’ve just got this feeling.’ He couldn’t have been more right… I joined the register when I saw an appeal for Alice Pyne, a blood cancer patient from Cumbria. I had a feeling I’d go on to donate, but I never imagined I’d get the call just two years later. Once I knew someone needed me, donating was a no-brainer. I was amazed at how simple and painless the whole process was, and that’s coming from someone with a fear of needles! After the transplant I couldn’t stop thinking about my recipient, so I was thrilled when he sent me a card and we started writing to each other. We had to correspond anonymously for two years; those are just the rules surrounding the process.

But in 2014 I finally learnt he was a father of two named Johnny and he lived just three hours away from me. Johnny had previously suggested running the London Marathon together in 2014, (Anthony Nolan was Charity of the Year) and I accepted, saying I’d be honoured and that I better get training! In 2014, a few months after our first meeting, we ran the marathon side by side for Anthony Nolan – we later learnt it was the first time a donor and patient had ever done this. Running the marathon was definitely harder than donating my stem cells! But doing it beside Johnny was just amazing.

‘Saving Johnny’s life is the best thing that I’ve ever done and I think it’s the best thing that I will ever do.’

ANTHONY NOLAN WA WHO CHANGED THE In January 1974, a register of potential bone marrow donors was created by Anthony’s mother, Shirley, in the hope of finding a cure for the life-threatening blood disorder her son had been born with. Anthony sadly passed away in 1979 without finding a match, but his legacy has led to thousands of lives being saved. Today, there are over 600,000 people on the Anthony Nolan register, all of them potential lifesavers. THE WORK BEGINS

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF RHYS MORGAN In 2009, Dr Rhys Morgan – a research scientist at the University of Bristol - lost his brother David to Hodgkins lymphoma, a form of blood cancer. A stem cell transplant could have saved David’s life. Rhys was even the right genetic match and could have donated stem cells to his brother. This is fairly rare, only around 30% of people will be a genetic match for a sibling.

Donation day. Great start, thank you @AnthonyNolan! #literallyfightingleukaemia

But tragically, David passed away before a transplant could take place. Afterwards, Rhys joined the Anthony Nolan register in the hope of donating to someone else in David’s position. Because the genetic match between donor and patient needs to be so precise, the odds of it happening weren’t high. Most people have a 1 in 900 chance of donating over a five-year period (although for a man aged 16-30, it’s more like 1 in 200). But in May 2016, against all the odds, Rhys got his wish... The process begins with a series of hormone injections, causing his stem cells to multiply into the bloodstream, Rhys then heads to a London hospital to begin his actual donation.

18 Tabler AutumnEdition

The day begins with a full fry-up (delicious!) before Rhys is taken to a ward bed, and settles in for the donation. My home for the next 5 hours. Looks comfy to me! @AnthonyNolan! #literallyfightingleukaemia

DONOR The process itself is straightforward. A single tube is inserted into a vein in Rhys’ left arm to extract the blood (and with it, the precious stem cells). The blood then flows into a special machine that filters out the stem cells. And finally, the blood returns to Rhys’ right arm via a second tube.

And that’s that, all done. Thoughts now with the recipient, really hope that it works. @AnthonyNolan

All he has to do is sit and wait. Donation underway! Comfortable, painless and treated like a king! @AnthonyNolan #literallyfightingleukaemia

With the donation complete, Rhys heads back to Bristol – with little more than a tiny plaster to show for his experience. When you have a plaster this big, you don’t have a lot to complain about. Get signed up!

After a few hours, the stem cell collection is starting to look really healthy. If Rhys’ body doesn’t produce enough, he might be asked to come back tomorrow – but in the end, the bag contains 6.4 million stem cells. More than enough!

The experience is, as he puts it, ‘so so easy’ but it makes a massive difference. Hundreds of people see Rhys’ tweets about his donation experience. And by the next morning, his story is appearing on the Daily Mirror website, encouraging others to sign up and save lives. Tabler AutumnEdition 19

THE MANY WAYS TO D SAVE LIVES. Round Table wants to #DoMore. And Anthony Nolan is all about saving lives. Together, we can make an incredible difference for people with blood cancer. There are so many ways you can get involved with Anthony Nolan’s work – whether it’s using your spit, your spare cash, your sporting skills, or your spectacular ability to spread the word. The possibilities are endless… 1. DONATE YOUR STEM CELLS Men aged 16-30 are by far the most in demand as stem cell donors, but they make up only 15% of the register. You can sign up online by filling in a form and spitting in a tube. You’ll then stay on the register until you’re 60 - Anthony Nolan will be in touch if you ever come up as a match and you could save someone’s life. 2. RAISE MONEY It costs Anthony Nolan £60 to add every potential stem cell donor to the register. So the more money we can raise, the more donors can be added – and the more lives we can save. It’s that simple. Everything from running a pub quiz, to organising a fundraising football tournament, or hosting a charity auction can help. 3. TAKE PART IN A FUNDRAISING EVENT Team Anthony Nolan is a formidable force, taking on all kinds of fundraising events. From marathons to skydives, treks to cycling tours - they’ve got a challenge to suit you. Join the team in black and green to help raise lifesaving funds. 20 Tabler AutumnEdition

4. CAMPAIGN Politicians have the power to introduce and support policies to provide better care and research for people with blood cancer. And, with your help, Anthony Nolan has the opportunity to influence them. Contact your MP, sign Anthony Nolan’s petition and spread the word about their campaigns to help make change happen. 5. VOLUNTEER Volunteers are at the heart of Anthony Nolan – from inspiring students to join the register, to transporting stem cells round the world. The opportunities are varied and pretty unusual! Whether you’ve got five minutes, a few hours or a couple of days to give, you can get involved. 6. GIVE MONEY Every day, Anthony Nolan gives three people a second chance at life. From recruiting new donors, facilitating transplants, conducting research and supporting patients – this all needs funds. Every donation helps support their lifesaving work.

KNOWLEDGE

THE ROLE OF REGIONAL REPS – THE TRUTH! CHAIR OF THE REPS MALC COTON GIVES THE LOW DOWN ON THEIR ROLE AND WHY THEY MATTER TO YOU. LET’S CLEAR THE AIR ON A FEW MYTHS AND HELP YOU GUYS UNDERSTAND MORE ABOUT YOUR REGIONAL REPS... WHO IS MY REGIONAL REP, WHY DO THEY EXIST AND HOW CAN THEY HELP ME? Firstly, let’s just take a moment to remember these guys are all volunteers, giving up 10 to 14 hours a week, adding value to the Tables in your Regions; they are at heart Tablers, just like you and are not in any way a policing role or there to tell you how to run your Tables. Round Table is led by its members, who are elected to Regional Representative and National Board positions. These members then work alongside an employed Chief Executive to drive the organisation forward. Why do we have Regional Reps? They were introduced eight years ago because council meetings were never quorate as not enough Area representatives turned up to vote at National Council Meetings (NCM), so 20 Regions were established, passing all governance from Areas up to a single Regional Rep. Your Rep sits on the National Council with other Regional Representatives and the National Board. The National Council is the main governing body of the association. The Reps help to take a strategic long-term view when making decisions about the future of Round Table. 22 Tabler AutumnEdition

The Reps are there to support local Tables in their growth and development. They are there to represent the members of Round Table, ensuring their views and ideas are all considered at a national level, so it’s vitally important you engage your Rep to find out what’s going on, how it can affect you and share your views, so they can represent your Table at NCMs.

The Rep keeps members informed of the national strategy and direction, key national initiatives and any other significant issues that may affect members. You should receive regular updates by email and/or visits at your Area exec meetings. Your Rep is there to share best practice throughout the Region, by bringing back examples of best practice from other Regions, and sharing local examples from other Tables within the Region they are a great knowledge source and can also help you to mobilise resources from other Regions to help you to achieve your Table’s goals. Your Rep will engage with all Tables in the Region and ensure there is two-way communication between members and the national body, as

well as monitoring new member enquiries and encouraging Tables to take local action to recruit prospective members. Your Rep (or Deputy) will attend National Council meetings and represent members’ views, as well as debating wider issues for the long-term health of the association, working with others on the National Council to propose resolutions to improve the way the organisation is run at a national level. They will help deliver national initiatives throughout the Regions, so branding and specific activities are embedded and actioned at Table level, and be a contact point for all Tables in the Region for queries about rules, regulations and other national matters. So, what are you waiting for? Reach out to your Rep and make the most of how they can help you and your Table! If you have an idea how the organisation can Adopt, Adapt or Improve, why not propose a change via your Rep? A full list of Regional Representatives was in the last edition of Tabler Find it online at www.issuu.com/roundtablegbi

Membership COULD AN E-CLUB BE THE

FUTURE? MEMBERSHIP ASSOCIATIONS ARE CHANGING – IN FACT THEY HAVE TO, EVEN JUST TO REFLECT THE SOCIETY THEY ARE A PART OF. Richard Holland, National Membership Officer, has brought the idea of an e-club to the National Council. So what is an e-club you may be asking? Richard explains all: “Round Table is growing once more and we have an opportunity coming up for us to accelerate that growth. In this day and age, it is increasingly common for young men to work away from home or commute long distances to get to work. Having spoken to a number of membership enquirers that have not converted into members, the single most common reason given is ‘not enough time.’ “We could of course bury our heads in the sand when this happens and just say ‘oh well’, or we could do what “Rotary have done to adapt their membership offerings, and consider launching an ‘e-Club’. Rotary have had an e-Club since 2002. The only difference is that their thousands of members meet online to co-ordinate service projects and enjoy fellowship with like-minded Rotarians. Round Table is 14 years behind Rotary in doing this and we need to accept that it’s 2016, not 1927. Could you realistically imagine there not being a Round Table e-Club in another 90 years’ time? “A prospective member who has taken the time and trouble out of his day to complete an enquiry form clearly wants to be part of something and Round Table is evidently attractive to them. At present, if he happens to be too busy to commit to regular attendance at his local Table’s meetings, he may feel that he is not worthy of membership and then seek membership of some other organisation or club. That is a loss to our association both from a financial and a fellowship perspective – and potentially a loss to that young man’s local community as well. “By chartering a brand new Round Table which accepts

members who can otherwise not commit to regular attendance at the moment with their local Table, we will be providing an opportunity for these young men to fulfil their needs and participate in the activities of the Round Table movement. Enabling these young men to see everything that Round Table has to offer will undoubtedly result in them wanting to join their local Round Table, or perhaps even start a new one! “The goal is not to change the way that our existing Tables operate, but to fill the enormous gap in the market – and in doing so, create a ‘holding pen’ for young men who want to get involved and do more.”

ROUNDTABLE 90th Are you going to the

‘must event’ of 2017? WHEN LOUIS MARCHESI SUGGESTED THE IDEA OF A YOUNG MAN’S CLUB BACK IN 1926, HE COULDNOT HAVE IMAGINED THE WORLDWIDE MOVEMENT` HE WOULD GO ON TO CREATE. HIS IDEA CAME INTO FRUITION IN 1927, WHEN NORWICH TABLE WAS CHARTERED AT SUCKLING HOUSE. In March 2017, Round Table will mark 90 years of making a difference worldwide. One man’s idea of giving young men a voice has evolved into an organisation with over 35,000 members spanning 52 countries. Winchester Round Table has taken on the challenge of devising a day to remember to mark 90 glorious years. Over 600 Tablers past and present will be gathering in the Great Hall where the original Arthurian Round Table hangs. Lunch will be served and all those in attendance can drink in the self-styled Round Table bar until 6pm when preparation for the President’s Party will start. Further details are currently being arranged but we can promise one thing: it is the sort of event where people will want to claim they were there in years to come. Barry Durman! AS 41 CLUB PRESIDENT, BARRY DURMAN WANTED TO COMPLETE ONE OF THE LEGENDARY BIKE ROUTES – JOHN O’GROATS TO LAND’S END (JOGLE) IN AID OF SHELTER. AND HE NEARLY DID BUT WITH JUST 66 MILES TO GO, BARRY COLLIDED WITH A LORRY AND NOW FACES MONTHS OF RECOVERY FROM HIS INJURIES.

Tabler AutumnEdition 25

“ It seemed like a good idea at the time.

It was May 2015, I had just been elected Vice President of 41 Club and started thinking about which charity to choose in my President’s year and how I could raise money for them.

Then it popped into my head. How about cycling from John O’Groats to Lands End? I had done it as part of a running relay back in 1983 and more recently I had cycled “Coast to Coast” and then the “Moulin Rouge Cycle Challenge”, with four Round Tablers from Moseley in Birmingham. It ticked all the boxes – raise money for charity, visit 41 Clubs along the route, show Round Tablers and 41 Clubbers that we can still do stuff and also achieve something on my bucket list. My good friend from Shirley Late Knights 41 Club, Colin Bowater, asked if he could come along for the ride and so it was agreed – July 2016 – it would be warm and there not much going on in 41 Club in late July. Shelter was my chosen charity – they exist to help ensure everyone has somewhere to call home. I had helped them back in 1969 when my youth club organised a sponsored walk and I still had my badge which says “I’m a Shelter Helper”. By chance it is their 50th anniversary this year and their services are needed more than ever – www.england.shelter.org.uk tells you all about them. Training started in earnest in February, while the route was planned in detail by my good friend Jonathan Whittaker on his Ordnance Survey software. Sadly, Jonathan suddenly died and my friends David Pitt and Chris Head finalised some of the detail. We remembered Jonathan every single day of our ride. The start date dawned. We loaded the van and set off north, overnighting in Ambleside and arrived at Nick and Kyrene Lawton’s in Inverness on Friday 15th July. The next day we set off for John O’Groats next day. I won’t bore you with the daily grind other than to say we did approximately 60 miles a day. The weather was not good with quite a bit of high winds and rain in Scotland and average temperatures in England around 16-18 degrees, which I thought was a bit chilly for July.

26 Tabler AutumnEdition

We had absolutely brilliant fellowship with 41 Clubs and Tablers all down the route from a garden party in Inverness, a BBQ in Lancaster and Bristol and many pub meals – it was the Round Table Family at its best. Ladies Circle National President Alex Bennett drove 200 miles to meet us in Whitchurch one evening. All went well until we got to Bodmin where we were diverted off onto country roads to avoid the A30 roadworks. Down a narrow country lane, around a right hand bend we met a lorry – a big green parcels machine – you know the one! I crashed into the bank and back into the road and Colin went through 360 degrees ending up in a hedge. He was OK, but I was not. I was rushed off to Plymouth hospital major trauma unit with a brain haemorrhage, broken clavicle (shoulder) and a smashed up pelvis. After six days they operated and inserted metalwork and a big screw into my pelvis. I had eight more days in Plymouth and four days in Heartlands Birmingham. There were some dark times during those three weeks, especially being flat on my back, on painkillers, with tubes sticking into me, waiting for the operation. My wife Rachel stayed down with me and was at my bedside from 9am until 9pm each day – I said she was my guardian angel. I realise now that when you say “in sickness and in health” sometimes you are asked to step up to that big fat promise. “As at the beginning of September, I am OK in myself and on crutches. I hope to be able to walk from the middle of September. After all I am off to India with 41 Club in October! No driving for three months, but I already had a team of drivers who are taking me to all my engagements with 41 Club and I will not be missing any events”. Finally, I plan to see this through, so I’ll be finishing the cycle on Saturday 1st April and if anyone fancies a 60-mile cycle on that day, I will see you in Bodmin.

REFLECTIONS Wear your cycle helmet like I did! Take out insurance if you work for yourself – sh*t does happen.

Be nice to your loved ones because they will be there for you when you need them.

Try to keep your weight under control – extra weight makes everything so much worse.

Don’t let bad stuff stop you doing things – I’ll be back in the saddle soon enough.

My thanks go to my JOGLE buddy Colin, to my friends for cards, messages and visits galore, to our sponsors, to Round Table Family members everywhere, to all those who have given – with over £10,000 raised to date for Shelter. If you wish to donate go to

There is nothing better than fulfilling a wish for a child. THIS IS ONE OF OUR MOST RECENT ONES. At just five years of age, Clark has already undergone three open-heart operations to resolve several issues and despite his tender years he faces the prospect of more to follow. But like a true ‘hero’, Clark soldiers on and his wish was to go to Disneyland so he could meet his own heroes from his favourite movie, Toy Story. While we may not have made a space ranger, we sent him and his family to infinity and beyond (well Disneyland Paris) for three days where he got to meet his favourites. Clark enjoyed it all but especially loved It’s a Small World and shooting aliens on the Buzz Lightyear ride. He was also impressed with the Car Stunt show. On the last day, Clark was invited to meet his heroes Buzz and Woody. He was totally overwhelmed to start with as they were much bigger than he expected but he soon relaxed and spent some time doing some colouring with them. Overall they had an amazing visit and have come home with lots of souvenirs and more importantly some incredible memories.

MEN’S HEALTH What is the new

Tabler Shape? THE TABLER DIET OF CURRIES AND BARREL LOADS OF BOOZE IS ONE OF THE REASONS ROUND TABLERS ARE EXACTLY THAT – ROUND! THE PHRASE ‘CHAIRMAN’S BELLY’ IS AN AFFLICTION TO ANYONE WHO HAS EVER HELD THAT POST AT ANY LEVEL AND HAS FOUND THAT THE INCREASE IN NIGHT’S OUT HAS SEEN AN EXPANSION OF THE WAISTLINE. However, a look at social media reveals that Tablers (well, some) are becoming more and more conscious of the weight gain and its perils and are fighting back! Slimming clubs (not like Little Britain), diets and new fitness regimes are becoming more common. Over the next two pages, we focus on one man’s battle to fight the flab, an activity that is hitting the big time, and get some facts and tips from Slimming World, the UK’s No 1 slimming club. Malc Coton decided to act after hitting 20-stone mark and being called ‘fat’. This is his story. “Ten years ago when I joined my local Table, it was joked that I’d need to become more of a ‘Tabler Shape’ and that this would be achieved through a combination of copious amounts of alcohol, unhealthy food and lack of exercise due to having a desk job and driving a lot with little or no exercise. “Whoever said it was bang on. Within two years, I’d developed said ‘Tabler Shape’, sporting a beer belly and developing man-boobs. Over the next eight years, this continued, to a point where some Table activities like gliding or anything really involving a harness became impossible due to a 16.5 stone weight limit. I accepted that I was just tall and heavy, then carried on regardless. 30 Tabler AutumnEdition

“Last year, our Regional Rep (and now close friend) Aaron Ross visited our Table and scoffed at me as I sipped on my real ale, declaring: ‘That’s six Syns you know! I’ve lost three pounds this week on Slimming World.’ “I smiled at him sweetly, acknowledged his personal achievement and carried on sipping my ale. The following week, one of my kids called me ‘fat’ while we were in town, so I marched them into Boots to the weighing machine (believing I was 18st 7lb). I weighed myself and to my horror was 20st 2lb. “Just like Aaron, I had broken the 20st barrier and that is a very sobering moment. I thought back to the pint I had at the bar and his words resonated in my head for days after. The next week, I asked Aaron if I could go to Slimming World with him and did. Aaron’s story was more about the fact he’d found it difficult to even scale a set of stairs without becoming out of breath and as a father of four active kids, he recognised he needed to address his situation if he was to lead a fuller and healthier life with his family. “I have tried a few diets in my life, but they are often faddy, requiring either starvation or some kind of juice or shake, which isn’t sustainable weight loss if you go back to eating normally.

“What was refreshing about Slimming World for me was that no foods are banned and you can eat till you are full! “Slimming World provide a practical solution to slimming. They offer plenty to eat – real food, filling food, in generous amounts – and that includes curry, fish and chips, bread and chocolate. Literally no food is banned. It does work – I have lost three stone in just over six months and I’m still losing it! “The great news is that compared to women, men are so easy to help! “Men tend to lose weight faster than women (it’s claimed) because they’re generally more focused when they start a healthy eating plan, with less negative feelings than women about previous failed attempts. And they are extremely committed when they finally join a slimming programme to suit their appetite. “So, what are you waiting for? If you are a traditional ‘Tabler Shape’, why not consider what the new ‘Tabler Shape’ needs to be for the future generations of our organisation to aspire to instead of becoming fat old men?

MACHOBESITY

How might masculine culture be contributing to men’s weight gain?

OFFICIAL FIGURES SHOW THAT MEN ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE OVERWEIGHT OR OBESE THAN WOMEN AND MORE LIKELY TO CARRY WEIGHT AROUND THE STOMACH, WHICH CAN BE DANGEROUS FOR HEALTH.

• Current data shows men are more likely to be overweight than women

SLIMMING WORLD RESEARCH HITS HOME

If you’re a man who struggles with his weight (or you know a guy who does!), read our new online booklet’ The Machobesity Report: is your masculinity stopping you from losing weight?’ New research from Slimming World suggests that many men see eating big portions of high-fat foods and binge drinking as ‘masculine’ and seeking help to manage weight as ‘feminine’, which could be a key factor in why men are more likely to be overweight or obese than women. Our new booklet presents the evidence for how commercial weight management programmes like Slimming World can be effective for men and shows that while many men may prefer the idea of losing weight through physical activity, for those who struggle with their size, it can often be difficult to get started. The booklet – which contains the stories of men who have lost weight and now live fit and active lives – also reveals the benefits that men see from losing weight with Slimming World, including health, fitness, body image and even an improved sex life! Use the hashtag #SlimLikeAMan on Twitter and Instagram to share or see real-life experiences of men losing weight. Key subjects

than women? likely to be overweight • why are men more for men to lose weight? • what’s the best way benefit men? • how does losing weight

• Slimming World research has identified something called ‘machobesity’ – this is where masculine culture encourages men to see unhealthy food and behaviours as masculine and healthy food and behaviours as feminine • The research shows that overweight men see foods like meat pie, fried chicken and chips, and behaviours like eating big portions and drinking lots of alcohol in one go as masculine • On the other hand, foods like salad and yogurt and behaviours like choosing the healthiest thing on the menu and reading nutrition labels are seen as feminine • With the research finding that overweight men are more likely to choose masculine foods , these perceptions of what’s masculine and feminine could increase men’s chances of gaining weight.

What should men do about this? • 95% of overweight men want to lose weight – yet 71% see worrying about weight as ‘feminine’ • Men see physical activity as the most socially acceptable way to lose weight, yet many say they would struggle to run 100m without stopping, do 10 press-ups or swim four lengths of a 25m pool • Men see commercial weight management organisations as less socially acceptable. Yet Slimming World data shows once they join, they attend more often and lose more weight than women (5.7% in 12 weeks, compared to 4.3%) • Many men worry about being the only man in a slimming club. Slimming World have 40,000 men attending nationwide – an average of three per group. Men report that it is welcoming, informative and aimed at both genders.

IRO Report

I HAVE JUST RETURNED FROM THE WORLD MEETING IN KATHMANDU, NEPAL, WHERE 45 ASSOCIATIONS WERE REPRESENTED, AND 648 DELEGATES ATTENDED. I HAVE BEEN VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE BEEN ACCOMPANIED BY STEVEN GREW (VP), STUDLEY (PAST IRO), MARTIN LINDSEY, JASON THOMPSON (RTI PAST PRESIDENT) AND MARCUS JONES (IPP).

Grewy and JT have given an overview – here’s an update of the key decisions from the week and some observations: • RT Nepal is growing off the back of rebuilding schools. There are 25 clubs all around the country. Nepalese tablers have managed to rebuild 34 schools around the devastated areas! • The world meeting made the front page of a national paper, which also included details of the All4Nepal campaign. • During the RTI AGM, there was a crucial vote about the restructure which saw the EMA Region, of which RTBI, disbanded in favour of separate regions made up of NTM (North), CTM (Central) and STM (South including Mediterranean countries).

• Kaj Kostiander (RT Finland) was appointed new RTI President, and Yann Tavernier (RT Belgium) was elected RTI Vice President. • India now has the biggest association in the world with 4,286 members and growing very rapidly! • RTBI secured spots to Zimbabwe and Italy via travel bingo. We will welcome members of Iceland and Romania to our national events. • Please email me at international@roundtable.org.uk if you want to put your name down for the bingo. Nervy start to Nepal nirvana

But the hard work in the mornings was rewarded by the parties in the evenings. Thursday night was the Dons and Divas night, where everyone dressed up as film stars and got to walk the red carpet.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, we are unable to land at our destination airport and we are running out of fuel.” Not the words you want to hear as you approach the Himalayas!

Friday night was Nations Night, and I have to say one of the best events I have had the chance to be part of. Every one of the 45 countries in attendance shared its national food and drink of choice and everyone wore national dress. We let other countries sample our Irish whiskey, British Cider and a variety of biscuits.

But then this was just another Round Table adventure as part of the delegation representing RTBI at the World meeting in Nepal, with 45 nations attending. I had never really thought about visiting Nepal before. I was aware of the earthquake and knew about Everest and it wasn’t somewhere I had ever imagined going to. On the way to the hotel, it was apparent what damage had been done by the earthquake, how Nepal had been hit and the work still needed. Despite this, the Nepalese people are intensely friendly and positive.

Saturday was the Gala Dinner for 600 people and the celebration of another new year in RTI with a new President and National Board and a fantastic four-course meal and dancing into the small hours. As I departed the following day, I was aware that were it not for Round Table, I would never have visited this part of the world and this is another example of those thousand one-offs.

So what goes on at a World meeting? The first evening was the official welcome dinner with traditional dancing, followed by a visit to a local nightclub for some more up-to-date moves! I was representing RTBI and so required at the first of many meetings including a Council meeting; the RTI AGM and then Region meetings spread over three days.

Next year, the World meeting is in Estonia and I hope many of you will be able to join me there. Steven Grew RTBIVP

All4Nepal campaign adopts two schools

More than 250,000 euros were raised through donations and the sales of items such as pin badges with then International President Jason Thomson (JT) being a driving force.

Jason said: “It’s a massive honour and the day came with great emotions. I visited two schools which were adopted by this scheme and they’ve now been transformed through generous donations in this global campaign.

The Saffron Walden Tabler was back in Nepal to witness first hand the impact of the campaign which has seen two schools, Okharpauwa Secondary School and Neva Jeevan Secondary School Benefit.

“Those donations and hard work through Round Table Nepal proven have awesome. Round Table has made a difference on a global scale.”

Fifteen months on from a devastating earthquake in Nepal, the efforts of the Round Table family through the All4Nepal campaign have borne fruit.
