2 Tabler SummerEdition

Summer 2016 There is a terrific buzz around Round Table at the minute. A first significant year of growth in a generation and some major developments in the first half of the year have really made a difference and generated a ‘feel-good’ factor. Over the second half of the year, let’s continue to feed that positive vibe and ‘spread the word’ about how great Round Table is as an organisation…but equally how much difference it makes to our own lives. Some men are not so lucky and this month we recognise national stress week and have some sage advice from Men’s Health Forum. We can, in our own way, have an impact, by spreading the word about Round Table. We’re a man’s best friend. Let’s get out there on social media, in the newspapers and on the airwaves and tell everyone. On a different note, it can’t have missed your attention that we’re in for a sizzling summer of sport,so you’ll find with this edition of Tabler a poster with the Euro 2016 fixtures plus it’s a very handy promotional tool too! Finally, I must urge you to sign up your Table to Discover Month which returns in September. Each club that signs up will get some excellent PR benefits as we look to attract even more men to this growing organisation. Don’t miss out! Have a great summer and remember to #spreadtheword. BILLERICAY GET ON THEIR SOAPBOX!

MAY BANK HOLIDAY SAW THE RUNNING OF THE INAUGURAL BILLERICAY SOAPBOX RACES ALONG “THUNDER ROAD” IN BILLERICAY. ORGANISED BY THE BILLERICAY ROTARY CLUB, OVER 40 SOAPBOXES AND OVER 5,000 SPECTATORS TURNED OUT ON AN UNCHARACTERISTICALLY SUNNY BANK HOLIDAY AFTERNOON TO WITNESS WHAT CAN ONLY BE DESCRIBED AS AN AMAZING EVENT. IN THE THICK OF IT WERE BILLERICAY ROUND TABLE WHO NOT ONLY HELPED TO MANAGE THE EVENT BUT ALSO RAN A TEAM; THE ROUND TABLE ROCKET. Billericay Round Table put on the largest firework display in Essex so it was a no brainer that our soapbox should be built to look like a massive firework. Team captain Shea Kelly said, “From what started as a collection of uncompromising bits and bobs lying on the floor of a garage on a rainy January afternoon, with a lot of effort from everyone in our Table and a little help from our sponsors pavement.uk.com, essexsmarthomes.co.uk and rallysport-eng.com, we turned out not just anamazing looking Soapbox but one able to win second prize in our category!”

Obviously any Soapbox Race Team needs an act for the start line. So in keeping with the firework theme our team re-enacted the entire gunpowder plot in 30 seconds featuring King James I, Guy Fawkes and two policemen who looked more like members of The Village People, all set to the music of a Benny Hill chase scene. Table chairman Marcus Bennett said: “An awesome event and a great team effort from everyone involved which has raised a huge amount of money to be split between our local hospice and Medicine San Frontièrs.” He added, “obviously being one of the judges had nothing to do with winning a prize”. It may only be Summer, but have you planned what you’ll be doing with Pudsey Bear this year? New Round Table BBC Children in Need co-ordinator Craig Knights (of Bolton Round Table) is encouraging Tables to think beyond November when it comes to fundraising for BBC Children in Need. He has a letter you can use to apply to fundraise at sports grounds across the UK – you can email him on pudsey@roundtable.org.uk 4 Tabler SummerEdition

ROUND TABLE ANNOUNCES RECORD

FUNDRAISING AT AGM WE REVEALED THAT ROUND TABLES HAD RAISED IN EXCESS OF £3.3 MILLION IN THE PAST 12 MONTHS, BENEFITING MORE THAN 2,000 ORGANISATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS. This is the second year where a national survey has been conducted with more than 65% of Tables responding. National charity Round Table Children’s Wish saw donations of over £70,000, while Round Table clubs continue to support the BBC Children in Need appeal which saw over £100,000 donated.

MARATHONMAN

MAKES THE PRESS IN MAMMOTH CHALLENGE ONE MARATHON ISN’T ENOUGH OF A CHALLENGE FOR IPSWICH GREYFRIARS TABLER TOM BOOTHER – SO HE PLEDGED TO RUN THE 816 MILES FROM LAND’S END TO JOHN O’GROATS IN AID OF TWO CHARITIES. Tom, who has run a number of ultra-marathons both in the UK and abroad, ran for 16 days to complete the challenge. The gruelling and relentless run got great coverage across the media as a guy doing something quite extraordinary. By day, Tom is a motivational speaker who uses his experience of finishing some of Europe’s most gruelling marathons to give an alternative look at how individuals can achieve more from business. Tom’s fundraising was split between Great Ormond Street Hospital and the East Anglia Children’s Hospice and ended up raising over £5,000.

Round Table President Mark House said: “It is simply awesome that Round Table can offer so many opportunities to its own members while benefiting the communities we live in. After a fantastic year of growth in membership, we now see a growth in fundraising too. As well as money raised, our members are giving thousands of hours of time to make a difference in the UK and Ireland. “ We all need to feel proud of this huge achievement.”

DUNFERMLINE DRAGONS’ DEN

SUPPORTS AUTISM ROCKS DID YOU KNOW THERE ARE AROUND 700,000 PEOPLE IN THE UK LIVING WITH AUTISM? FOLLOWING A SUCCESSFUL BEER FESTIVAL, CHARITIES WERE INVITED BY DUNFERMLINE ROUND TABLE TO ENTER THEIR ‘DRAGONS’ DEN’ EVENING TO PITCH FOR MONEY FOR THEIR VARIOUS CAUSES. Autism Rocks, a Fife - based autism support group, walked away the biggest winners on the night with an £1,800 donation from the lads which will go towards mobile sensory equipment as well as being able to offer support to a wider geographic area.

COMMUNITY RE-USE SCHEME AVAILABLE DID YOU KNOW THAT B&Q HAVE A SCHEME THAT MAY BE OF USE TO YOUR TABLE? The scheme is in place to donate unsellable products and materials for re-use by community groups for the benefit of the local community and environment. This may be of particular use if you are refurbing your sleigh for example. To find out information on this scheme, please head to your local store and speak to a duty manager. As well as unsellable products, B&Q also work in conjunction with a community repaint scheme which stops paint from going to waste. More on Community Repaint can be found on the website CommunityRepaint.org.uk Tabler SummerEdition 5

I AM ABSOLUTELY HONOURED TO BE YOUR NATIONAL PRESIDENT. I ADORE GOING TO DIFFERENT TABLE MEETINGS BECAUSE WHEN TABLERS GET TOGETHER, MAGIC REALLY HAPPENS. At National AGM, I delivered a true story about my brother and how we used to set him challenges to meet new people. His favourite was chat-up lines and his best-ever chat-up line was about the word of the day. He asked countless ladies to guess the word and to go home to spread the word with him. I can’t tell you how popular that made him in all the clubs we went to and how much it brought him and our friends together through laughter. I think his story is something we all do in Table – have fun, learn new things, make friends for life and do good. What we sometimes don’t do though is spread the word about how awesome we are. We can all take some time to remember just awesome we are; we offer an amazing place for young men, we raise millions of pounds and millions of smiles and we bring our communities together. All whilst having fun and making friends for life. Every Tabler loves Round Table, our communities love Round Table, and we do amazing things. I think this is something that is truly awesome, and I think we can shout this from every rooftop. I hope you will join me in spreading the word. Knowing that we are heading in the right direction and are growing is a hugely liberating feeling. I know we will grow even more, and if I were to talk about another area that is important for us, it is sharing more and helping more Tablers get together. I am passionate about Tablers getting together and through our National events, Areas, and supporting programme events, we can do that more.

6 Tabler SummerEdition

We are having four Area and Table Chair meetings this year, and all Areas are encouraged to bring their Tables together to have fun and support growth. Some of this will also be helped with a new member system that will allow us to do more and to see more of all of our members, and more news will be shared. These are exciting times, yet it is the basics that will see us get ever larger; be together, travel, laugh, learn and spread the word. Let others see and know how amazing Table is and encourage them to join. So, please do get together more, make more magic, shout more achievements and just remember how awesome you are. Remember that it is the light you give each other and our communities that makes us all shine. And remember, you got up and did something amazing. You gave your time to do more. For that, I thank every single one of you for making Table the awesome place it is and will forever be. Finally, I want to come to your events. I look forward to seeing you over the next year. AFTER 40 YEARS, NSW (NATIONAL SPORTING WEEKEND) IS A MUCH-LOVED ROUND TABLE TRADITION. RECENT YEARS’ EVENTS HAVE SEEN IT TAKE PLACE IN DIVERSE LOCATIONS SUCH AS ILFRACOMBE, WINCHESTER AND THE HOME OF ROUND TABLE – NORWICH.

In September 2016, the Victor Ludorum trophy will be contested once again in Oxford. This trophy is awarded to the area with the highest points score across the whole of (NSW). For those smaller areas, the recently introduced Marchesi Cup means that every area has something to play for. New sports to feature in 2016 are; real tennis, real rowing along the Thames, Aunt Sally, Eton Fives, a road-cycling event and punting. There’s also the chance to run on the track where history was made, and try to replicate Roger Bannister’s four minute mile. Added to this is a novelty event that will bring together elements

of the four Oxford stories represented in the logo, and challenge the athletic and not so athletic at the same time. For many Tablers, NSW is the highlight of their Tabling year – offering a chance to meet up with friends from across the country, and indeed world. Friday night activities will bring Tablers together in the many great bars across Oxford, and Saturday’s final night party will see the presentation of the individual and Area trophies. To be part of the story, book your place at this iconic event by visiting https://nsw2016.co.uk/ A one-night package starts from £169 and installment options are still available.

SUPERMARKET SWEEP FOR KING’S LYNN AND DISTRICT TABLERS AND A LOCAL SUPERMARKET HAVE WORKED TOGETHER TO GIVE A BUMPER DONATION TO KING’S LYNN FOOD BANK. King’s Lynn and District Round Table gave the foodbank £500 worth of non-perishable food to the local food bank and were topped up with a donation of £50 by the Aldi store in King’s Lynn. The King’s Lynn foodbank gives out around 300 food parcels a month and this donation will help local people in crisis.

SHIRLEY BEER FESTIVAL HITS NEW HIGHS ONE OF THE BEST WEST MIDLANDS BEER FESTIVALS GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH UNDER THE STEWARDSHIP OF SHIRLEY ROUND TABLE AND LADIES CIRCLE. The May event, which is now in its sixth year, saw in excess of 2,500 people descend upon the local rugby club to sample over 90 different beers and 30 different ciders. The money is still being totted up but it is expected that they’ve raised thousands for local good causes. Tabler SummerEdition 7

Cooking up a win

on National TV

A MOSELEY TABLER BECAME A TELEVISION STAR FOR OVER A WEEK FOLLOWING A DRUNKEN CONVERSATION WITH HIS OTHER HALF. Chris Ward and his partner Alice appeared on Channel 4’s Too Many Cooks. Alice rang Chris after a Table night at Christmas time to reveal that she had applied for the show as a couple. A Skype interview later with the production team and the pair found themselves gearing up for TV stardom. However, it didn’t come without its challenges for Chris: “Filming was a good laugh; however it soon emerged we’d have to work within strict time constraints – so one of the outcomes of this show is learning that time keeping isn’t one of my strengths! I’m a bit leisurely in the kitchen and I have been known in the past to serve a Sunday Roast at 22:00.” The show, which is shown over five nights, saw the couple cook to different themes which included Mexican, Thai and Chris’ favourite, a British-themed party which saw them cook slow-cooked beef cheeks followed by a Pimms’ cheesecake.

Despite a slow-paced cooking style, the Brummie pair walked away the winners and £1,700 better off:“Most of my mates were really looking forward to watching me make a fool out of myself on national TV — however, after the show was aired, friends, family and Tabler alike said they enjoyed it and we came across well on camera”.

GRAB YOUR TICKETS FOR WINCHESTER PREPARATIONS FOR THE 90TH CELEBRATIONS IN WINCHESTER ARE UNDER WAY AND TICKETS WON’T BE HANGING AROUND FOR LONG. The event, which is taking place on 11th March 2017, will mark 90 years of our Association and will be held in the home of the inspiration for the Round Table logo – The Great Hall in Winchester. Tickets are being released in batches of 90 – and once they are gone, they are gone! The guys are keeping you updated on their Facebook page – Round Table’s 90th Anniversary and on the website rtbi90.co.uk Keep checking future editions of Tabler for further details and grab your tickets now.

Novelty story of the quarter! IN SCENES SOMEWHAT REMINISCENT OF A BUSHTUCKER TRIAL ON I’M A CELEBRITY, SADDLEWORTH TABLER DAVE MACDOUGALL HIT THE LOCAL PAPERS AFTER FINDING A LITTLE EXTRA PROTEIN IN HIS SEALED TAKEAWAY MEAL. After reporting the discovery of the beetle to Tesco, he was offered a measly £5 in compensation. The story was splashed over the net including the Saddleworth Independent and Oldham Chronicle. Naturally the lads from Saddleworth Round Table have given Dave some grief about this including asking him whether he found John, Paul and Ringo and whether he liked his new car. Well done to Dave on getting the Round Table a mention.

MARK UP YOUR DIARIES FOR DISCOVER MONTH

START THE FANS PLEASE! LAST JUNE WORD HIT THE MEDIA THAT THE 90’S TV CHALLENGE SHOW ‘THE CRYSTAL MAZE’ WAS MAKING A COMINGBACK, BUT THIS TIME AS AN IMMERSIVE EVENT FOR ANYONE TO HAVE A GO.

Launched on crowd-funding site Indiegogo, a group of eight like-minded Tablers and Circlers shared fond memories of the programme with one another and their love of a team challenge and thought it was worth the punt. They ‘invested’ in the cost of a launch ticket and The premise is simple: just choose an activity in September as the weeks and months followed, watched the event for your Table that we can promote to the wider world. build progress with keen interest to see whether it We’re busy working on plans for the month at HQ – we just need would pay off, and pay off it did! ROUND TABLE HEAVYWEIGHTS

BATTLE IT OUT FOR

CANCER RESEARCH UK CHRISTCHURCH TABLERS FACED ONE OF THEIR BIGGEST BATTLES IN MARCH AS THEY TOOK ON WHITE COLLAR BOXING IN AID OF A CHARITY CLOSE TO THEIR HEARTS. After a friend of the family died suddenly from a recurrent bout of the disease, Paul Hutson and incoming Chairman Richard Gladman decided to take on the challenge. Training meant both guys lost weight and became fitter than ever. All the effort was worth it, with both guys winning their respective bouts on 19th March and raising £1,000 in the process.

Meeting in a non descript secret location near Angel tube station in London, Tablers and Circlers from Barry, Swindon and Maidenhead donned their own – and official Crystal Maze attire (bomber jackets) – and led by a slightly bonkers maze master, descended into the maze. True to form, the maze, complete with the Medieval, Aztec, Futuristic and Industrial zones had been replicated to a tee and the team took on various skill, mystery, physical and mental challenges. With just one lock-in (Circler of course) and a couple of game fails (all), the team took on the concluding challenge – the Crystal Dome with a brilliant 13 crystals, securing 65 seconds of time! After hearing the immortal phrase, “Start the fans please” the team had to leap about grabbing gold tickets from the air and stash them into the collection box at the front of the dome. Great fun and actually much harder than it looked on TV. After watching the other four teams who had also competed during the same period scrabbling about, the tickets were all counted out, which to the team’s delight awarded them second place. Not too shabby at all. Tabler SummerEdition 9

TABLER DOESN’T DODGE A TROPHY! ROUND TABLE WAS WELL REPRESENTED AT THE DODGEBALL WORLD CUP WITH A TABLER MAKING THE ENGLAND LINE-UP. Lutterworth Tabler Simon Jones wore the number 7 shirt for the tournament which was held in Manchester in April. England sailed through the group stages beating the likes of the Aussies, Egypt and Wales and faced the USA in the quarter final. The final against Malaysia saw England emerge as 14–3 victors. Simon, who plays for Lutterworth Meteors, takes on an even bigger challenge this year as he becomes Table Chairman.

FIREWORK PARTNERSHIP GOES OFF WITH A BANG! ROUND TABLE HAS TEAMED UP WITH AN AWARD - WINNING PROVIDER OF FIREWORKS FOR A PARTNERSHIP WHICH IS POTENTIALLY GOING TO GO OFF WITH A BANG. Fantastic Fireworks, who are currently the British Champions, have been setting the fashion for fireworks for over 30 years and are responsible for over 200 professional displays each year. The company is known for their displays themed with music and if you were at the National Conference in Cardiff, you may have seen a flavour of this at the fireworks display on the Friday night. Fantastic Fireworks also supports a strong training and community programme. As part of the collaboration with RTBI, Fantastic Fireworks will be offering discounted training to the many Tables who run their own shows and also to those who would like to be part of Fantastic Fireworks’ professional team firing their own Table display. Tables wishing to find out more about working with Fantastic Fireworks need to contact RTBI Business Development Manager Liam Bedborough by emailing Liam@RoundTable.org.uk

New training videos now available We’re bringing HQ training to the comfort of your computer screen in the latest videos to be added to the training section on the member’s website. Marketing yourself is a strong theme of the two new videos which will show you how to write a basic press release, how to schedule events on social media and how to add events to Facebook. Shakespeare tabler

If all the world’s a stage… Wyre Forest Tabler Andrew Bingham swapped his life as a mechanical engineer for an evening treading the boards as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s revival of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Andrew, who has been part of the amateur acting company The Nonentities Society for two and a half years, got his big break at the age of six performing in Snow White as the Wicked Witch’s’ side-kick! Since then he has gone on to perform in a range of different roles including Jack in Jack and the Beanstalk, Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz and Leo in Stephen Poliakoff’s Sweet Panic. However, it was only recently that caught the Shakespeare bug playing Bassanio in The Merchant of Venice. Then the Nonentities Society he was a part of heard about the RSC’s special plans for the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. Anyone familiar with A Midsummer Night’s Dream will know that it features a play within the play performed by amateur actors. It was the vision of artistic director Greg Doran to get different amateur companies to play the amateur actors within the play, and that’s where The Nonentities Society comes in.

There were two auditions, the first was a two-day workshop hosted by some of the best Shakespearean coaches in the business, and even getting to this stage was more than he could have hoped for. “It was amazing and I learnt so much,” said the 25-year-old. The second audition took place at the RSC and involved piecing together a dance routine. After the two auditions, Andrew found out that his amateur acting society had been chosen to perform alongside a professional company which he described as “a dream come true”. The Nonentities Society finished their run in Stratford back in February but Andrew will be back this month to perform in the final the dates at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Andrew plays Snug the Joiner and has picked up some acting superstitions as a result. He added: “I have to clean my teeth before going on and I always have to stand in the same place just before I go on, I don’t know why, I just feel like I can’t get into character or something is wrong if I don’t.” A Midsummer Night’s Dream was reviewed by The Telegraph who praise the Nonentities Society’s part in the play, saying they bring the freshest and most entertaining moments of the night. There is even a mention of Andrew’s hilarious contribution. www.telegraph.co.uk/theatre/ what-to-see/this-midsummernights-dream-gives-shakespeareback-to-the-people/

Hike & Bike consists of two challenging days:

Day 1

Our calves are burning from the hike, our thighs are burning from the bike, our faces & necks are glowing from the sun, and our stomachs are still bloated from the bread. What’s not to like?? We had a top weekend!

12 Tabler SummerEdition

Teams set off at three minute intervals on a 15-mile hike across the hills with challenges along the way. They are only given the grid reference of their first checkpoint, and get their next location as they reach each checkpoint. The challenges test physical, mental, and the willpower of teams and individuals. This year’s challenges included:

Tyre flipping (with a HGV tyre weighing approx. 92kg) Bread eating (the team had to eat a full 800g unsliced loaf of bread in the quickest time possible) Cairn building (the teams have to build the tallest cairn – a pile of rocks in a set time to earn points) The team skipping but using a tug o’war rope

Day 2

A 22-mile bike ride with all of the checkpoints given. Teams can go any route they choose. They are scored on which checkpoints they get to, and lose points for being over the permitted time.

They’ve won it in previous years and so it’s starting to look like Sebastian Vettel in the F1 all over again! Mirfield 652 (Team A) won the plate this year. They did fantastically, and even though they didn’t have a fantastic first day they overtook many of the main competitors on the final day. The Area 9 Competition was won by Elland 658 – a remarkable achievement for a team full of people who’d had very little experience with Hike & Bike before. The weekend went really well and since the event there have been a lot of emails telling me how much teams have enjoyed it, and can’t wait to return next year.

AREA 24

THE DEVELOPMENT OF AREAS IS A KEY PRIORITY FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF ROUND TABLE. IN THE LATEST IN OUR SERIES FOCUSING ON AREAS ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND WHAT MAKES THEM A SUCCESS THE LADS FROM THE FENS REFLECT ON AN IMPRESSIVE 12 MONTHS THAT HAVE SEEN THEM COME TO THE FORE WITH NEW TABLES, A PRESENCE AT NSW AND HOW THEY HAVE GROWN THEIR NUMBERS. NEIL CROUCHMAN AND SAM HADDIDI OF ST NEOTS ROUND TABLE TELL THE STORY. It has been a really exciting 12 months for Area 24. There is a real buzz around the Area with the recent additions of Hampton and Cambridge Tables along with a load of new and very active members. Ely Round Table is on the way to being re-chartered along with potentially another two new Tables to add to Area 24.

Euro trips Re-chartering of Cambridge After closing its doors back in 2005, Cambridge Round Table rechartered under the determination and guidance of Martin Lines. The re-charter dinner took place at the famous Jesus College in Cambridge with Tablers past and present joining from across the country. Going from strength to strength, the club is up to seven members with another four ready to join. With an exciting programme of activities planned, Cambridge Round Table is receiving a huge amount of interest with lots of young men across the city interested in joining. National Sporting Weekend 2015 I think it’s fair to say, Area 24 smashed it at NSW 2015. Second in the Marchesi Cup, Volleyball Champions, Tug o’ War semi finalists, second in the rowing, and table tennis semi-finalists. Preparation is currently under way for NSW 2016 in Oxford and it looks like we will have more attendees than ever! We would like to thank the team at Norwich for organising a fantastic event and reluctantly congratulate Area 14 for the NSW victory, but beware, Area 24 are coming for you!!! 14 Tabler SummerEdition

Over the past 12 months St Neots have attended two Euro Meetings, one in Falun, Sweden, and the other, Tamsweg in Austria. It was the first Euro Meeting for many of the newer Tablers. Five members went over to Sweden where the sun never set over the weekend and 10 attended Tamsweg. In Sweden, the weather was kind to us and we were taken to a private island via speed boat where we enjoyed a ridiculous amount of beer and gin along with a bit of Frisbee golf. Our Swedish friends hosted everyone extremely well and really opened our eyes to what an incredible organisation Round Table is internationally. We turned up in Falun, without really knowing anyone, we went home with loads of new Tabling buddies and overwhelming amounts of great memories. We headed over to the Tamsweg Euro Meeting for the ski season in January and some of the guys went over for a week to take advantage of the great value skiing with the rest joining on the Friday. Again, it was an incredible experience, from the gala dinner up in the mountains to drinking endless amounts of Schnapps in the Tamsweg Club House.

The guys from Stamford Round Table went over to Belgium where they took an RAF minibus to Ypres. After a very enjoyable evening sampling Belgium’s finest beer and steak the tour began. The first stop was the Menin Gate Memorial, where a few of the guys had relatives’ names marked on the wall, and after a short while they managed to locate the names and laid a wreath for them; it was a very touching moment for all involved. Back on the minibus and off to Hellfire Corner, Sanctuary Wood, Hill 62, Langemark Cemetery and Tyne Cot Cemetery. For anyone who has not experienced Round Table internationally, I cannot recommend it enough! It is an amazing opportunity to visit places you would not usually go to, and meet other Tablers whilst creating memories and stories that will stay with you forever.

The caravan Area 24 was lucky enough to inherit a caravan! This is used at various events across the area with each Table contributing a small amount to the maintenance and branding. It draws some great attention and certainly makes Round Table stand out! Supporting Young Farmers Area 24 have been supporting the Young Farmers Club with several events across the year. A strong relationship has been developed, promoting Round Table as an opportunity to continue the social and community projects when leaving the Young Farmers Club at 26. The enthusiasm to do more is very apparent across all of the Tables within Area 24, with an increased involvement with the local communities, Tabling activity across the country and overseas and of course, National Sporting Weekend! Conference 2016 So what went down in Cardiff? Conference – it’s not just about AGM! Over 500 delegates travelled to Wales for the Round Table and Ladies Circle National Conference weekend for a packed weekend of fun and friendship. We could fill a whole magazine with conference coverage but to give you a flavour, here is a rundown of what went down.

WORKSHOPS PROVE A BIG HIT After Aviemore attendees gave workshops the thumbs-up, the team were given the challenge of arranging more training for Tablers. Two sessions were run this year with Brad Parkes giving attendees a master class in public speaking whilst outside organisation Film Café gave people the chance to make a brilliant video using only their smartphone. Feedback from the workshops has been great, with Tablers leaving with new skills and top tips to take back to their own Tables. More work to provide further training at National events will now take place.

…AND THE WINNERS ARE! They aren’t quite the Oscars but interest in the National Round Table awards was high this year after nominees were revealed a week before the main event. The presentation of a Marchesi Medal is incredibly rare and outgoing President Marcus Jones awarded two on the day, much to the surprise of all the delegates in attendance.

Conference 2016 A STAR IS BORN! An 18-year-old Tabler managed to steal the show at the Round Table AGM by giving the speech of the weekend talking about the work behind Round Table university clubs. Nathan Moore is the first Chairman of the soon to be chartered University of Warwick Round Table and spoke enthusiastically about why we need these new university clubs. After giving a speech a professional would be proud of, Nathan left the stage to a standing ovation and was later recognised by outgoing President Steve Glaister with the Past President’s Pot award for the best contribution to the AGM. You can view Nathans speech on our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/roundtablegbi.

VAUGHAN’S JACKET IS COMING HOME TO MARCHESI Jill Harris is on a mission to complete Vaughan’s dream of raising £250,000 for Round Table Children’s Wi sh. Last year, she came up with the idea to decorate one of Vaughan’s jackets with pins from around the world and raffle it off. The jacket received attention from Round Table family members across the globe and has been covered in badges from nearly every continent. After the raffle was drawn at AGM, it was revealed that a German Tabler had won but has chosen to donate the jacket to Marchesi House where it will be on display for all to see. Overall, the raffle raised over £3,500 – a fantastic result!

FIONA IS BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS EN ROUTE TO STRATFORD One Circler is breaking down barriers in becoming Conference Chairwoman for Stratford 2017. Redditch Circler Fiona Bull will head up the team bringing the Conference to the home of Shakespeare next year and already has plans for a rip-roaring time…for a bit. Early plans for Conference include the reintroduction of the Hardcore Hut and a new buddy up scheme to avoid single supplements and these are going down a storm, with 150 rooms sold already. Euro 2016 Six of the best: Euro gems set to sparkle THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE SET TO KICK OFF THIS MONTH WITH 24 TEAMS LOOKING TO BE CROWNED THE KINGS OF THE CONTINENT IN PARIS. WITH LONG-AWAITED RETURNS TO A MAJOR CHAMPIONSHIP FOR WALES AND NORTHERN IRELAND, WHO WILL BE JOINED BY ENGLAND AND THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND ACROSS THE CHANNEL, THIS PROMISES TO BE AN INCREDIBLE MONTH OF FOOTBALL. WE ALL KNOW THE BIG-NAME PLAYERS THAT WILL BE LOOKING TO SHINE FOR THE MAJOR NATIONS, BUT ROUND TABLE’S OWN FOOTBALL PUNDIT HARRY PRINCE HAS PICKED OUT SIX STARS TO LOOK OUT FOR.

KINGSLEY COMAN

DELE ALLI

MARCO VERRATTI

(Winger, France)

(Midfielder, England)

(Midfielder, Italy)

A relative unknown on these shores but he already has the CV of a seasoned veteran. Aged just 19, the Frenchman learned his trade at Paris Saint-Germain before joining Italian giants Juventus where he won Serie A and Cup medals in his first year. This year he has been on loan at Bayern Munich, and has pocketed another league title medal!

After a brilliant season with Tottenham, the goal-scoring midfielder will be looking to take his form to the international stage. The PFA Young Player of the Year will look to showcase his talents that fans of the Premier League know he possesses in abundance.

The pint-sized Italian is part of a PSG team that took their holidays early having won the Ligue 1 title back in March. But this summer will be no vacation as he has to step up and fill the gap left by Andre Pirlo in the Italian midfield – and Verratti is more than capable of doing so.

Having started the season at his boyhood club MK Dons, he has gone on be the highest scoring English midfielder this season, scoring on his England debut, and spearheading Tottenham’s title charge with teammate Harry Kane (another to watch out for!)

Hardly a newcomer as the 23-yearold made his Italy debut back in 2012, in a 2–1 win over England, but still only has 15 caps to his name.

Made his senior debut for France in November 2015 and only barrier to more caps is the quality in the France squad! Expect him to be an impact player from the bench! Ververidis Vasilis / Shutterstock.com

Alli could be a component of an England team that actually look like they have the talent to win their first-ever European championship. CosminIftode / Shutterstock.com

But no doubt over his quality as he has appeared in every Ligue 1 team of the year since joining the French giants in 2012, made over 100 appearances for PSG, scored in a 3–2 win over Barcelona and won every domestic trophy available to him. He has even been compared to Jesus by his enigmatic teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Vlad1988 / Shutterstock.com

BLAISE MATUIDI

BREEL EMBOLO

RENATO SANCHES

(Midfielder, France)

(Forward, Switzerland)

(Midfielder, Portugal)

Matuidi, a team-mate of both Coman at international level and Veratti at club level for PSG, is an understated midfielder who rarely gets the limelight in teams that are full of superstars. However, don’t underestimate the impact Matudi can have on a side.

The young Basel striker is a powerhouse who has drawn comparisons with one of the Premier League’s greatest strikers Didier Drogba. Born in Cameroon, Embolo is apparently on the radar of a host of top Premier League clubs and was recently the subject of a €27million bid from Wolfsburg.

The 18-year-old Benfica star is already being hailed as the country’s next big thing following in the footsteps of midfield giants like Figo, Rui Costa, Paulo Sousa and Deco. This is his first full season but his displays have earned him a move to Bayern Munich for £63 million! He has broken into the national squad this season and has two caps to his name. While Portugal will again rely on the scoring talents of Cristiano Ronaldo, Premiership fans may want to keep an eye on the performances of this prodigious talent.

France coach Didier Deschamps says that the 29-year-old is the first name on the French team sheet, and he could be integral to France becoming the first host nation to win the tournament since... France, back in 2000. Vlad1988 / Shutterstock.com

Embolo is part of a Switzerland squad that has a genuine chance of reaching the knockout stages of the Euros for the first time if he is firing on all cylinders. A strong Euro showing will put him firmly in the shop window for any potential buyers.

MEN’S HEALTH MEN’S HEALTH WEEK IS HAPPENING 13TH – 19TH JUNE AND WE THINK THAT IT’S PRETTY IMPORTANT THAT MEN START TO ADDRESS HEALTH PROBLEMS STRAIGHT ON.

MEN’S HEALTH FORUM ARE ACTIVELY ENCOURAGING GUYS ACROSS THE UK AND IRELAND TO TALK ABOUT HOW YOU BEAT STRESS AND WHAT CAUSES IT.

Prolonged stress can cause a range of negative feelings and behaviour and the resulting symptoms may seriously affect mental output. As problems mount up, it becomes more difficult to cope.

They’ve given us this great guide to beating stress. You may be thinking that this article isn’t for you, but did you know that one in four of us will develop a mental health problem this year? That’s about the same odds as France or Germany winning the Euros. Has that got you thinking? Then read on.

Stress affects your whole body, lowering immunity and increasing the risk of disease.

WHAT IS STRESS? Stress is a modern buzzword that is used to describe the feelings of ‘distress’ experienced when tension (or boredom) get unbearably high. In fact, a moderate level of stress is important and beneficial – it’s a key element that enables you to deal positively with the physical and emotional challenges of life. WHAT ARE THE MAIN SYMPTOMS? When stress increases, you soon feel the effects as symptoms show up in all vital systems. Physical signs include: HEADACHES BACKACHE DRY MOUTH INDIGESTION SEXUAL PROBLEMS DISTURBED SLEEP PANIC ATTACKS STRESS AFFECTS THE MIND AS WELL AS THE BODY. COMMON MENTAL SYMPTOMS INCLUDE: POOR CONCENTRATION SHORT-TERM MEMORY LOSS FEELING CUT OFF FROM THE WORLD FEELINGS OF FRUSTRATION IRRITABILITY ANGER DEPRESSION

22 Tabler SummerEdition

WHAT DO YOU DO ABOUT IT? If we don’t release stress, it can turn into something more serious. A mental health problem is more likely to occur if we don’t learn how to release our stress. Being a Tabler, many of the ideas of how to combat the S word will come naturally to you such as exercising, laughing, volunteering or learning something new. SHOULD I SEE A DOCTOR? Deciding whether to consult someone about stress depends on how you feel. If symptoms of distress are making you unwell it would be advisable to seek help without delay. You could speak to your GP, the practice nurse at the surgery, the occupational health nurse at your workplace (if there is one) or a stress counsellor. There is no single test that diagnoses stress. The main investigations will include a physical examination to eliminate other possible diseases and a discussion that helps the doctor pinpoint evidence of stress-inducing problems. You should certainly consult a health professional if you are depressed because of stress, or if stress is causing you anxiety or leading to panic attacks.

How can I help myself? Most cases of stress can be dealt with by self-help measures. Keep a stress diary for a few days to note your sources of stress and how you reacted. EXAMPLE OF A STRESS DIARY ENTRY: Time Event Feelings Reaction Use the diary to spot your stress triggers and to help you think about how you could tackle the cause and find better ways to cope. If you wish to talk to a professional about feeling stressed, the Men’s Health Forum has launched a new Beat Stress service – a free text chat with experts trained in beating stress with no names and no hassle. This service will be launched during Men’s Health Week. To find out more about Men’s Health Week or the Men’s Health Forum, head to

FEATURE

George is a wow with Worthing MANY BOYS DREAM OF BEING A FOOTBALLER WHEN THEY GROW UP – BUT IF LIFE THREW THEM A CURVE BALL, WOULD THEY THEN WANT TO BECOME A FOOTBALL CLUB CHAIRMAN? This is the reality for 23-year-old George Dowell, who was involved in a life-changing car accident six years ago that left the talented young footballer paralysed from the chest down. “There were no other cars involved. My friend was driving, lost control of the car and it spun off the road,” said Dowell, who found fame earlier this year as a star of The Undateables TV show. The accident failed to put him football and last year, Dowell was looking for land - his own field of dreams. “I was looking to start my own football centre with a 3G pitch in Worthing that other local teams could use to train and basically give myself a job in something I like doing – essentially killing two birds with one stone. “As I began looking into this, I read in the local newspaper that Worthing FC were struggling financially and were pretty close to having to shut up shop.

The club finished third in the league and last month won promotion via the play-offs. They also secured a Senior Cup final, which is making the chairman’s job somewhat easier. Dowell said: “The reaction to me so far has been good but a successful season helps. If it wasn’t so great, maybe they would have been saying that I’m only 23 and don’t know what I’m doing. “Our five year plan is to get into the Conference South, so two divisions above where we are. The fans always want more, which is understandable, but many of our fans are realistic. Money doesn’t grow on trees at this level and we rely on gate money and some local sponsors.” Non-League football continues to play a significant role in the football pyramid, particularly in producing gems that go on to have success at a higher level. The most recent success being Leicester and England striker Jamie Vardy, who was playing for Fleetwood Town just four years ago.

“I was told to formally write my business plan and bring to the board as a viable idea.”

“Last year, Hull signed a player from a team in our league and one of our Under 18s has just signed for Ipswich. We’ve always tried to bring through youth players and in turn that brings the scouts down. Our team is young – we only have a few players over the age of 23.

After approval by the club’s board, Dowell became the majority shareholder in the Ryman Isthmian League Division One south club, with 75 per cent.

“There is so much more interest in lower league teams now because they are trying to find the next Charlie Austin or Jamie Vardy.

“I took on the debts, laid my 3G pitch and started my football development centre. It was all perfect timing,” he continued.

“You might not receive a huge upfront fee for the player but they might pop down for a pre-season friendly which brings people through the gates. That early bit of cash can ease the pressure financially.”

“I used to play for Worthing and I still knew some of the guys who played for the under 18s and some guys on the board.

“I thought most of my time would be taken up by the football centre, mainly centred around pitch bookings but there are so many rules and regulations that you need to get your head around with the football club. “For example, for every game we have to complete and send off three different sets of paperwork to a deadline. “Once you get used to it, you get into a routine. It is hard work but I wouldn’t want to be involved in anything else. I have a passion for it which helps.” 24 Tabler SpringEdition

The local community is a key focus for Dowell and the Worthing team and this has been reflected by a boost in gates. “We’re always trying to find new ways to engage the community. Before I joined, crowds were around 150 to 200. Now they are 5-600. The club was maybe a bit stuck in its ways before and not that welcoming.

“The same faces were there every week and in the nicest possible way, it was very much an old boys club and not particularly geared towards young people. Young supporters are the future so we try to engage with the kids by getting them on the 3G pitch after the games and they are often here training with their own clubs midweek. “We know most people are going to support a league club, but we are trying to encourage people to support us when they have a free weekend.”

The Round Table Trust

A passport to opportunity FOR MORE THAN 50 YEARS THE ROUND TABLE TRUST HAS BEEN DOING MORE BY PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF BRITAIN AND IRELAND. The Round Table Trust, founded in 1962, offers travel grants to young people who volunteer for community service projects overseas. There can’t be one Table that hasn’t had a request for funding to assist a young person looking to give their time to a worthy cause in some corner of the world. These are life-enhancing opportunities that deliver tangible benefits to the recipient, the cause they support but also Round Table as they become ambassadors. Aside from promoting applicants, the Trust also requires donations to be able to provide support to young people. Why not consider a donation at your next business meeting? We have supplied two case studies of recent beneficiaries of the Trust, reflecting on the impact it had on them and the communities they went to. To qualify for funds There are several criteria that each applicant has to fulfil to secure funds. The full list is available on the Round Table website but applicants must be over 18, demonstrate tangible benefits to the community they go to, be on placement at least three weeks, and provide a written report upon return. For more information search for Round Table Trust on the Round Table website.

26 Tabler SummerEdition

Application process If the candidate can fulfil all the criteria, then they need to complete an application form. With limited funds, each application is considered on its own merits. An endorsement by a local Round Table or Ladies Circle could strengthen the application. CASE STUDY 1 – EMILY DICKSON, KENYA I WAS ONE OF SEVEN PEOPLE THAT FLEW TO KENYA IN JULY 2015 FOR A FIVE-WEEK PROJECT. After arriving in Nairobi we were driven to St Mary’s Boarding School for Boys. Our project was based on the building of accommodation for teachers. Throughout our time there we helped to build two of these homes, aiding the builders in various tasks, from carrying cement powder, rocks and sand, to cutting bricks to the correct size for the building. Throughout the first few days our main task was focused on moving bricks, and as the time progressed we moved onto creating the homemade scaffolding, and the roof beams. Back home we are so used to metal scaffolding and machines to do the work, I never comprehended the difference. One of the focuses of St Mary’s School is that it is a rescue centre, which means that it takes boys who previously lived on the streets due to issues such as being orphaned, and domestic violence, or lived in the slums and therefore couldn’t afford an education. St Mary’s normally takes these boys in at a young age, and supports them through their primary and secondary education. We were so humbled by the people we met at the school, from the amazing life stories about their life before St Mary’s and their struggles now, to the ambition and commitment of the boys to their education and future careers. We spent free time playing football with the boys or attending homework sessions. We also went on various trips, from the Maasai Mara safari, to the Menengai Crater in Nakuru. These immersed us in the culture of Kenya. My visit to Kenya was nothing like I had anticipated. The influence it has had on me will remain with me forever. While we only spent five weeks in Kenya, the accommodation we built will house teachers for many generations. I will always hold the memories of this place close in my heart, and am so grateful for the opportunity I had.

CASE STUDY 2 – BEN CUSHION, CAMBODIA IN JULY LAST YEAR, I SET OFF AS DEPUTY LEADER OF A GROUP OF 13 STUDENTS FROM DURHAM UNIVERSITY TO EMBARK ON A LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE. OVER THE SIX-WEEK EXPEDITION, I LEARNED A LOT ABOUT THE UNIQUE COUNTRY, ITS PEOPLE AND ITS CULTURE, AS WELL AS ABOUT MYSELF.

For the first two weeks of the project, mornings were spent in a rural area half an hour from Battambang, building a kitchen for a family of four and a family of five. The experience of building something from scratch was an incredibly rewarding one. As well as the building work, we left both families with a six-month package of cooking basics to see them through the winter.

The six-week trip focused on a four-week volunteering project in Battambang with the Future Sense Foundation on their Challenges Abroad programme,

In weeks three and four, mornings were spent painting classrooms in a local high school alongside a group of sixth-form volunteers from the school.

One of the main features of life in Cambodia that remains underdeveloped is education. Children receive government-funded education in the morning, but in the afternoon must rely on private lessons. The poorest families cannot afford afternoon education. In Battambang, the local charity Children’s Action for Development, have sought to address this by setting up CAD schools run by volunteers to provide Khmer (Cambodian language) and English lessons to some of the poorest and most vulnerable children.

Teaching English was by far the most challenging but most rewarding aspect of the trip. We arrived with little teaching experience, but left feeling we had made a significant contribution to the children’s development.

The Future Sense Foundation provide English - speaking volunteers to support local volunteer teachers and lead lessons. The Future Sense Foundation also provide volunteers to help with renovation and building work of the local area, where many live on the poverty line.

It was a fantastic experience and I am extremely grateful to everyone who supported me. I feel I have grown as an individual and I feel that our work has added real value to the community we worked it.

Over four weeks, our mornings were spent building kitchens for two families and painting a local high school, and afternoons were spent teaching English in one of the CAD schools.

After the project, we had a bit of time to unwind in the tropical islands off of Sihanoukville – Cambodia’s beach town – and Kampot – a laid-back river town, before heading to the capital, Phnom Penh. Here we visited the famous Killing Fields and S-21 prison – remnants of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime.

Of the £2,850 I fundraised for the expedition, £800 was given to the Burma Education Partnership. The charity works in refugee camps on the Thai–Burmese border providing teacher training programmes and migrant schools.

MEANTIME PILSNER

ORCHARD PIG

The summer is made for cider, and why settle for anything other than the best? That’s why Hallets Real Cider, the recipient of a BBC Good Food and Farming award back in May has made our list. Hallets Cider came from humble beginnings, and is the product of Andy Hallet, an engineer who turned his cider - making hobby into a full-time profession.

Pilsner is the world’s most popular beer, and if that isn’t enough of a seal of approval, the University of Vienna found that Pilsner has less gastric acid than other beers, meaning you will be a lot less bloated, leading to a much more civilised drinking experience. Furthermore, Meantime’s pale ale recently made its way onto Men’s Health’s healthy guide to beer, meaning you won’t wake up with a sore head and a guilty conscience after drinking it just a sore head. www.meantimebrewing.com/our-beers/

If Budweiser is the king of beers, then Red Stripe is undoubtedly the king of BBQ beers. It is brewed in Jamaica, which is not a bad start if you’re looking for a potion to help you conquer the warm weather. The old school lager is a must - have at any self-respecting back-garden BBQ, and is probably the most well-known name in this guide, and for good reason.

Orchard Pig are an award - winning group of craft cider producers based in Somerset. The company started when founders Alex and Neil were knocking back their homemade cider with a group of friends while enjoying a hog roast, and since that decisive day at the start of the noughties, Orchard Pig have gone from strength to strength, supplying the nation with brilliant draft cider. Nevertheless, the best thing about Orchard Pig is their range of bottled ciders, which makes for the perfect backgarden beverage. The bottled range, including the Reveller, the Charmer and the Truffler, are all gently carbonated which leaves room for... more cider to help you through those long summer nights. www.orchardpig.co.uk

Round Table Family Jump ON Board HELLO, I’M ALEX BENNETT, AND I’M DELIGHTED TO BRING GREETINGS TO YOU AS THE LADIES CIRCLE NATIONAL PRESIDENT 2016-17

Congratulations to Mark and the new Round Table Executive Team… I know you will do an awesome job, and I’m looking forward to working side by side with you as part of the Round Table Family throughout the coming year. Over the last 80 years, you have supported the formation of new Ladies Circles and have seen that together we can make a real difference to our local communities for that I thank you. On 25th June in Solihull, 600 past and present Circlers from all over GB&I, together with the International Board and many representatives from our godchildren countries will join together to celebrate the momentous occasion of our 80th Charter. I hope you will join us in raising a glass to an association that has touched so many lives in such a positive way… and I’m so pleased we will support such a modern and relevant charity as Coppafeel at the event. It is my ambition for us to continue to work together to improve our reach, reiterate our core values, and celebrate our successes.

My nominated presidential charity is Epilepsy Action, chosen due to the impact this has had on my family and the lack of knowledge I know I had when my mother was first diagnosed. Epilepsy affects around 600,000 people in the UK each year and the charity works hard to improve the lives of those with epilepsy.Over the next 12 months we will be working in partnership with Epilepsy Action to help raise awareness of the help and support available, and to participate in fundraising events and activities. A date for your diaries! The Ladies Circle 2016 National Ball will be held on Saturday 24th September at The Renaissance Hotel, Manchester. I hope you will be able to join us… why not even make a weekend of it? So gentlemen… please do “jump on board” with Ladies Circle and let’s make 2016-17 a year to remember! Yours in Friendship, Alex xxx

NATI ONAL ASSOCIATION OF

HELLO BOYS!

CLUBS

LET ME INTRODUCE MYSELF, I’M PAULA THE NEW TANGENT NATIONAL PRESIDENT AND I LIVE IN MAIDENHEAD WITH MY TWO PET COCKATIELS BARNEY AND DAISY. This is a fantastic time to be part of the Round Table Family: 41 Club celebrated 70 years last summer, Ladies Circle celebrate 80 years in June and your 90 - year celebrations happen early in 2017. It’s a time for us all to talk about the Clubs whenever and wherever we can and that’s what I will be doing on all my Club visits. Every President brings a breath of fresh air to the role and having spent time with President Mark I’m sure that you will find this too. Having joined Ladies Circle in Dorset, I have always had a soft spot for Round Table Children’s Wish and as a trustee for the charity it has been fabulous this past year to support the 25th anniversary. I’m sure that you will be delighted that Tangent IPP Alex Voller raised a whopping £28,000 to support them. 32 Tabler SummerEdition

My chosen charity for the year is The Kidstime Foundation, who support children of parents with a mental illness. On a final note, I hope that you can embrace my theme for the year; one time, one meeting. Taken from the Japanese 一期一会 “Ichi-go ichi-e”, we’re reminded to cherish any gathering we may take part in as many meetings in life are not repeated and each moment is always once in a lifetime. I would like all of you to treasure each and every meeting, not just within your own Clubs but also in the wider Table community, with your families and friends. Looking forward to meeting you, mine’s a G&T. Paula Farnfield One time, one meeting NATC President 2016-17

Round Table Family

First the good news… IT’S AMAZING – LITTLE DID I KNOW THAT, WHEN I CAUTIOUSLY JOINED 41 CLUB ALL THOSE YEARS AGO, I WOULD END UP AS NATIONAL PRESIDENT – IT JUST GOES TO SHOW THAT AN ORDINARY GUY CAN DO EXTRAORDINARY THINGS (WHERE HAVE I HEARD THAT BEFORE?) So there is good news and bad news in 41 Club – let’s start with the good news. Well, the fellowship is good – we do lots of that with 777 Clubs and 16,195 members there are over 8,500 Club meetings each year. International is good – we do lots of that – with 24 countries having 41 Clubs there are large numbers of opportunities to go overseas and meet like-minded individuals who can become friends – just like Table! Community service and fundraising – we do quite a bit of that – 58 per cent of our clubs do something, either supporting our Table if we have one, or we do our own events such as the Wareham Beer Festival and Falkirk and York Ebor cycle rides. Talking of charity, this year I am supporting Shelter, for housing and homelessness – www.shelter.org.uk if you would like to donate or find out about it. Our relationships within the Round Table Family are often good – here’s a little - known fact; it was me that first conceived the RT Family badge. We are working together more than ever before. We are also trying to use our recently acquired database of ex Round Tablers to add to our membership.

Also, as the years approach, you have to be prepared to admit you are over 45 and stop hanging on in Table as is so often the case, but I do know our Clubs need to make more effort to modernise. National can set the tone, but Clubs themselves have to be prepared to change. What have we done about this? We have given under 45s complimentary membership as of 2017. We encourage Clubs to do some community service, which we know attracts Tablers. We encourage the formation of new Clubs where the old Club is just not suitable. We encourage Clubs to organise extra, more active nights in their programme. We do lots on social media to let the younger element know what’s going on. We have a monthly newsletter, a magazine and a new website to publicise it all. So I am going to shout from the rooftops about what is good about 41 Club, while doing my best to encourage Tablers to join. It is not easy, but we will listen to comments from Tablers – just email me – president@41club.org And finally remember what my friends say: “there is only one Barry Durman” and that is true (Google it). See you around, Barry

So what about the bad news? Well there is really one main bit of bad news and it is really very bad news. Only about 20% of leaving Tablers join their 41 Club. I think it is a shame that we haven’t opened our membership like Tangent have. While that is the case, our only source of new members is you guys. Those 41 Clubs that still have their Table (and that is only just over half of them) must become more attractive to leaving Tablers.

Round table Children’s wish

Wish granted for Kaine KAINE, AGED 13, WAS REFERRED TO US BY ADDENBROOKS HOSPITAL. HE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A RARE ILLNESS CALLED MEDULLOBLASTOMA IN 2014. HE HAD SURGERY TO REMOVE THE TUMOUR FOLLOWED BY RADIOTHERAPY. HE THEN UNDERWENT CHEMOTHERAPY TREATMENT. Kaine loves to spend time with his family and friends. However, he has to share a room with his brother and as much fun as this can be, he also finds it a little annoying too! Therefore, he decided that he would like a garden cabin so he had a space he could call his own and where he could spend time with his friends. We found the ideal one and with great support from Jason Thomson and his RT colleagues were able to make this happen for Kaine. The guys put in so much effort ensuring the garden was ready and the base all sorted so when the cabin was delivered they were able to put it up the same weekend. Kaine is delighted and hasn’t stopped smiling and can’t wait for the weather to get a bit better. Mum is planning to put a pool table in and some soft furnishings so Kaine will be comfortable and has a proper lads’ den. In the meantime, while they wait for the better weather, mum is planning to string some fairy lights over to brighten it up, much to Kaine’s disapproval! They are just over the moon with everything that has happened and the support they received from the charity and Round Table.

THANK YOU TO THE ROUND TABLE MARATHON RUNNERS

WHY NOT PUT IN A TEAM FOR OUR CHARITY GOLF DAY?

THANK YOU SO MUCH TO THE MEMBERS OF ROUND TABLE WHO JOINED OUR LONDON MARATHON TEAM THIS YEAR AND CONTRIBUTED TOWARDS ITS SUCCESS IN RAISING MUCH-NEEDED FUNDS FOR CHILDREN BATTLING LIFE-THREATENING AND TERMINAL ILLNESSES. THESE FUNDS WILL BE MAKING SOME VERY SPECIAL WISHES COME TRUE THIS YEAR FOR SOME VERY POORLY CHILDREN.

ROUND TABLE CHILDREN’S WISH ARE LOOKING FOR TEAMS TO PARTICIPATE IN THEIR CHARITY GOLF DAY ON FRIDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER 2016.

We had 14 Round Table participants and a 41 Club member taking part. Those members are Marcus Jones, Glenn Foulger, Patrick Glithro, Kevin Howard, Andrew Johnson, Simon Phillips, James Randle, Anthony Rice, Rob Trobridge, Duncan Warner, Ian Welsh, John Whelpton, Karl Ashford, Peter Mason and Martin Healey. Well done to you all! Your support is much appreciated and will be making a huge difference to the charity. The London Marathon is our biggest fundraiser of the year and helps us to grant a large number of wishes. The funds are still rolling in from the event and will continue to do so until July time, but we are hoping to raise an amazing £70,000 in total! If anyone is interested in taking on this challenge of a lifetime in 2017, please contact Sam at the office on 01202 514515 or email samantha@rtcw.org to find out more.

The event is being held at the beautiful Dudsbury Golf Club in Ferndown, Dorset with tee-off times starting from 11.30am onwards. It costs £190 for a team of four, which will include a bacon bap and coffee/tea on arrival (from 10.30am onwards), participation in the golf and a two-course dinner (available from 4pm onwards). This will be followed by the presentation of the trophy and prizes, a silent auction and a raffle at 6.45pm and the day should be finished by around 7.30pm. The format will be the same as in previous years with teams competing for the Round Table Children’s Wish Trophy (best two Stableford scores counting on each hole), together with various prizes for the longest drive and the nearest the pin etc. Funds raised from the day will be helping bring some cherished memories and magical moments to children battling life-threatening or terminal illnesses, so your support would be so appreciated. Have a fantastic day out with friends, whilst raising vital funds for a brilliant cause! To enter a team please email samantha@rtcw.org or call 01202 514515. Sam can then send you an application form to complete or answer any questions you might have about the event. Tabler SpringEdition 35
