letters to the editor Dear Rovers North, One day I pulled into a filling station in Rossville, GA. I spotted a Coniston Green Defender with its soft-top removed but its roof rack laden with serious adventure gear and numerous telling decals. The driver filling the tank looked the part of a National Geographic field man or a Wild Kingdom safari operative. Being a LR nut I felt compelled to speak with him about his admirable Defender 90. He was very friendly but gently derided it, saying, “Oh, this old thing? She’s got over 300K miles on her. I’ve had several. I drive them back and forth to South America.” No wonder it didn’t appear to be a “grocery-getter.” This LR had happily spent its life puttering through mud, rivers, creeks, mountains, and the brutal Pan-American Highway. It seemed to me, a lifelong admirer of these machines, that this man truly used his LRs for one of their many primary purposes. I made a note of his organization, Rivers of the World, and later looked up his website. The driver was Ben Mathes, a missionary from Dawsonville, GA, who works to assist those in under-developed river basins in South America and around the world. His organization provides a plethora of services (all detailed on an impressive website). He's somewhat of a cross between Billy Graham and Indiana Jones, and he inspired me to donate some foreign-language gospel tracts to
his organization. I’d have to say that although I own an ‘04 Discovery II, and have seen hundreds of others in my time, this remains one of the most unique Land Rovers for me. Mark Burgess Ringgold, GA [Thanks for the great story, Mark, and the link to his website, www.row.org.]
Dear Rovers North, I have a 1995 Range Rover Classic SWB that up to a few months ago was serviced by a local shop that specialized in Land Rovers. The shop closed and now the nearest (intelligent) service is 150 miles away. The vehicle has been stalling frequently, similar to a problem that I had a few years ago which turned out to be a bad ignition module. I don't have any way of testing the ignition system, so I am only guessing. The problem is intermittent but when the vehicle stalls, there is no spark. It seems to be related to heat since the problem does not occur when the engine is cold. I had the same problem a few years ago and the mechanic replaced the module—probably not with a genuine part. Also, I have heard that relocating the module away from the distributor helps the
unit last longer. Do you have any recommendations regarding extending the life of the module beyond two years? Can you offer any suggestions on how to deal with this problem? To me this is one instance where neither the original Land Rover part nor the ProLine part is worth using. The Lucas ‘Constant Energy Ignition System' used in the 90s vintage Range Rovers and Discovery’s is a defective system. It cannot take the heat in the engine compartment and fails frequently. Hence, it does not make any sense to continue to replace expensive, defective ignition modules. I am replacing the entire distributor and coil system with a Pertronix system that has proven to be reliable. I had hoped that Rovers North would have identified the problem with the Lucas system long ago and helped their customers by providing a more reliable replacement system. Years ago Rovers North was my go-to source for this type of advice, but I have found that your company has deteriorated to simply a supplier of (expensive) parts. I am sorry to see that happen, but all things come to an end…..
inner cable with a probe. Success! The cable was freed and a birthday camping trip was saved. I wanted you to know how much I have appreciated not only the fine replacement parts that RN has provided to my family’s vehicles, but the source of information that your staff is willing to provide in situations such as mine. Art and Les went beyond the call of duty and unknowingly made a little boy’s birthday something special. I will not forget the role RN played in saving the day. C. Scott Nutgrass Warner Robins, GA ’90 Range Rover Classic ’97 Discovery ’06 LR3 [We’re glad that the information we provided help you out of your jam; your own willingness to tackle the problem clearly led to a very happy birthday for your son –ed.]
Dear Rovers North, Bill Goggin Yakima, WA [When the module goes bad, there will be little or no spark at the spark plugs. When it cuts out again, check by removing a spark plug and see the condition of the spark. It should be a strong blue spark; if it is yellow or no spark, then the module is a likely candidate for replacement. Should you change your mind, Rovers North stocks the re-location kit, # RNI041, and the replacement amplifier, #PLI024) –ed.]
Dear Rovers North, I wanted to give a “thank you” to Art [Limacher] and Les [Parker] for their assistance on July 16, 2010. I found myself in the unfortunate position of having my ’97 Discovery SE7 unmovable in a Savannah, GA, underground parking garage. An over-eager valet had pulled the parking brake full on despite a noticeable resistance in the lever. After removing the connection between the lever and the cable, dropping the cable assembly below to the undercarriage, I was unable to free the inner cable so it would move in the sleeve and release the drum. I even tried bolt cutters to snip the complete assembly but it would still not release the inner cable. With my cellphone battery weak and an anxious 7-year old at home waiting for his birthday camping trip, I called RN and reached Art and Les, who advised me on everything from the cable connection at the drum, the adjustment procedures, even steps to take in the event of a tow. Based on their advice I made some additional cuts in the cable before the connection at the drum. I then rotated the adjusting point at the drum connector while pushing on the
Keep up the great magazine—I enjoyed reading about SCARR in my home state of Texas in the last issue. Though I and the rally are both located in Texas, it’s a 10 hour drive for me to attend. I’d love to go—maybe I need to look for a pickup and a trailer to get my Rover down there next year. Not sure how the 200,000 mile Range Rover Classic would do on such a long road trip. Gabe Moudy Plainview, TX [There’s no reason that a Range Rover Classic with the proper maintenance and parts replacement can’t make that trip. Why not start assessing the condition of your Range Rover’s systems (cooling, electrical, cylinder compression, brakes, etc.) and start planning your trip for SCARR 2011? –ed.]
Dear Rovers North, Thank you for such a great publication. You guys can motivate any reader into a hardcore Landy fan. You keep the hobby alive more than the actual manufacturer. To nature photographers like us, nothing compares with the vibrant colours and unique fauna and flora of the tropical rain forest. Thanks to our Land Rover we entered Australia’s tropical region of southeastern Queensland. The Paluma Range National Park provided us with our first night in the tropics, but we quickly headed north to Mission Beach. This area might give us a glimpse at the rare, strange and endangered Southern Cassowary. This flightless bird stands up to 6 ½ ft tall, has unusual strength and very dangerous claws. When threatened, it becomes dangerous and will attack people by ripping open their bellies. Oddly, Cassowaries only eat fruits of rainforest trees so they need a large territory in which to feed; the influx of new roads into the forests makes them vulnerable to vehicle accidents. During days and days of constantly walking the trails cut into the dense rainforest, we got lucky and saw a single male and another time a female Cassowary right on the trail where we were walking. Obviously they liked the open trails better than to dodge through dense forest. Then, one day, a male with three chicks stood right across our path. We managed to take some photos before the chicks wandered closer to us out of curiosity; the male followed and we got an uneasy feeling. Knowing how dangerous this big bird can be, we

backtracked slowly; the faster we backtracked the faster the Cassowary followed us. We became more concerned second by second and finally decided to run—at least this would keep the claws of the bird on the ground. Luckily, the bird was too lazy to break out in a full run and we reached the car out of breath, but unharmed. From Mission Beach we headed north again past sugar cane and tea plantations to reach the Atherton Tableland. While driving over uneaven terrain to look for a level campsite, we heard a loud, knocking noise from the Landy's underbody. As Steffan crawled under the Landy and demounted the very heavy skid plate we heard the strange sound coming from the nearby rainforest, for the first time. It sounded like shots. We searched out the source of the strange sound and found a Victoria Riflebird displaying! The bird created the shot-like sound by clapping his wings together until he attracted a female Riflebird. The Atherton Tablelands provided us with more amazing flora and fauna. The gigantic Curtain and Cathedral Fig Trees can spread over three acres of land with a girth of the multiple trunks extended over 140 feet. This is the home region of the Platypus, which resembles a combination of a duck, otter and beaver. Driving north towards Cairns we crossed the Daintree River by ferry to reach more remote rainforests in northern Queensland. Heavy rains forced us out of our leaky rooftop
tent and into the Land Rover. After three days of steady rain, we had to move on and traverse swollen rivers. Where other vehicles had to wait for the rivers to go down, our Landy had no problem getting through. Under the jealous observation of about a hundred of pairs of eyes, we got on the other sides safely. When we reached Cape Tribulation, the weather improved and the sun showed itself, finally. We laid out all our wet stuff in the sun to dry and enjoyed the weather. The following days brought nice weather and we made a lot of hikes in the beautiful and relatively untouched rainforests. Throughout this region we photographed unusual species of birds such as Sunbirds, Fig Parrots and Lace Monitors. Australia continually fascinated us with its unique geography, like Fraser Island, the world’s largest sand island. Only four-wheel drive vehicles can get permits to travel there, and the island has no formal roads, just sand tracks through the woods and along its beaches. It has no official campgrounds, no electric power or amenities. Unfamiliar with the public holidays of this country, we foolishly booked our trip for a popular weekend during school holidays; we were not alone. Since we wanted to go to Fraser Island the end of September, we had to buy a permit indicating our intended time of visit, online. No roads, only sand tracks through the woods and beach driving along the coastline. We booked beach camping, which means no facilities at all. No amenities, no power, nothing but solitude—or so we hoped. Instead we found ourselves confronting a long line at the ferry terminal. Once we arrived Fraser Island gave us all the challenges we hoped to find. The rutted tracks featured huge roots bursting through the ground, adding to the pounding through the steering wheel. The narrow paths meant that only one vehicle could pass through at a time, but stopping might mean we would become stuck in the soft surface, so we continued driving, always hoping not to have oncoming traffic in the critical passages. It took three hours of very concentrated driving to reach the beach. To find our campsite we had to cross a last, high sand dune and found a nice spot where we were far away from any people. Completely worn out, we finally relaxed and again thanked our Landy. We fell asleep to the soft sounds of the ocean. While we visited this island in Harvey Bay, a breeding ground for whales, we took advantage of a whale watch tour to see and photograph these majestic animals up close.

Returning to Sydney, we embraced the comfort of civilization. We connected with friends Chris and Helene, through whom we met up with a Land Rover mechanic. He found worn out brake pads, destroyed front and rear bushings and worn out steering joints—no surprise after a year of driving on washboard roads. The repairs took a couple of days and we headed off west towards the Blue Mountains. We camped near the famous Three Sisters rock formation and there, met up with wombats. These funny marsupials resemble a big ball of fur with a bear-like head. They live in burrows but feed on grass, mostly at night. Shortly after we fell asleep we woke up again to the Landy shaking wildly. At first, we didn't know what was happening—an earthquake perhaps? Steffan said jokingly, “Perhaps a wombat scratching it's back?“ Sure enough, underneath the car, two wombats scratched their backs against the Landy’s frame. We chased them away—no easy task—and tried to get to sleep again. Every time we almost fell asleep, those pesky wombats returned to shake the Landy again. After two hours we finally gave up, packed our stuff in the middle of the night, and left the place to the wombats. Going further south we reached Murramarang National Park, famous for its tame Eastern Grey Kangaroos grazing along the beach regularly. At first we didn't see anything, but later in the day, nearly at dusk, the kangaroos appeared. They were not in the least shy and we could approach them without frightening them. The next morning, they were there again and we enjoyed some exciting hours together. Resident parrots came also visiting our camp while we had breakfast with them, so to speak. We continued west for another three days and reached Mildura, the capital of this dry agricultural region, and then drove another 70 miles across dirt roads to reach a stunning desert park. During the days we photographed the clay formations and wildlife, spotting several different kinds of parrots and other birds, lizard-like reptiles and our first Western Grey Kangaroos. 10 / rovers magazine
Our travels took us next towards the Grampians Mountains. We passed endless wheat fields until reaching the Grampians National Park. We visited the famous 'Balconies', rock ledges jutting out over a high canyon, and saw numerous different kinds of parrots and a lot of Kookaburras. The Laughing Kookaburra, with its unique cry, is Australia's most famous bird. From the Grampians, we went further south to the coast and drove the Great Ocean Road back towards Melbourne. Around Cape Otway we hoped to search for more koalas. We were thrilled to spot our first koala, but then we saw another and another and another; dozens on every large tree, feeding, brawling and cuddling. Now content, we passed Melbourne from west to east and finally reached Alpine National Park. Yes, Australia also has high country, but the mountains are not as steep and jagged as for example the European Alps or the Rocky Mountains. The peaks look flat and more like high plains than steep summits; at 6,500 feet Mt. Bogong is the highest. Since it was early spring, the plains were abloom in violet, yellow and white colours. We spent some really cold nights up in the mountains, until we finally turned back to Melbourne. Time now became a factor if we wished to continue our round the world travels to North America. Once again, we had to contend with the paperwork and cleaning associated with shipping vehicles across the ocean. This time our good luck failed us as our agent kept giving us conflicting statements as to the necessary forms and signatures, necessitating numerous long drives for no apparent reason. As Christmas approached we completed our paperwork and flew home to Germany to share time with our families, praying that our Land Rover would arrive in Los Angeles safe and sound and with its required paperwork! Did it make it? We’ll let you know as we continue our trek in the next issue.

Land Rover unveiled its newest concept car, the Range Rover Evoque, at the Paris Auto Show this summer. Autoweek reported that this stylish take-off from the earlier LRX design should appeal to “woman and fashion-conscious urbanites.” Victoria Beckham, formerly Posh Spice, has agreed to serve as “an adviser to Land Rover on the Evoque project.” If Land Rover wants a Spice Girl as an automotive consultant, I should think they’d want a Spice Boy, too. Back In 1998 I participated in the formal celebrations of Land Rover’s 50th anniversary as a member of the Spice Boys UK Tour. Our group of New England’s bad boys included Chris Laws [Badger Spice], Peter Janney [Baby Spice], Barry Enis [Bald Spice], Scott Preston [Happy Spice] and me [Old Spice]. Channeling our inner Austin Powers, we did all the things that top-tier rock groups do on tours. We secreted ourselves in elegant country mansions [well, bed and breakfasts], set off security alarms [me on an early morning run], trashed hotel rooms [hauling off mattresses onto the floor during the British Airways strike], and became the darlings of local pubs [“not those bloody Yanks again!”].
Ms. Beckman considers herself a walking fashion statement; I know just how she feels. Each day I choose a different Land Rover t-shirt to wear while on caretaking projects. My closet has over 5 pair of L.L. Bean hunting boots and boat shoes, matched with nearly four pair of jeans and Carhartts – I can barely get to work each morning for the sartorial decisions I must make every sunrise. The same care for style and fashion extend to my Land Rovers. The red Hi-Lift jack in the QM I highlights the faded Masai Red wings of the Series II-A. The Sears toolbox that resides in the QE I is bronze green, which looks just smashing against the car’s Sage Green panels. The Series I repair manual with its bronze green cover contrasts nicely against the patina of the elephant hide seats. Old Spice stands ready to assist the company in this time of need. Land Rover, have Posh Spice’s agent call my agent and we’ll do lunch. 18 / rovers magazine
On this 40th anniversary of the Range Rover, it would be churlish and petty of me to revive the long-simmering issue of class warfare between the Range Rover and other Land Rovers, but a recent incident forces my hand. At a very contemporary seasonal residence on this island, a delightful couple proudly displays their stunning Range Rover. The family dog, Webster, a Bernese Mountain Dog/Irish Setter mix, greets me with a welcome bark and an active tail each time I arrive to mow the grounds. Webster has been raised around his Range Rover, but his owners have always been complimentary about the lines of my Series II-A. One would think that a dog, an animal sensitive to the emotions of humans, would pick up the good feelings expressed by his owners, who fully recognize the heritage of their Range Rover. Sadly, this was not the case. As always, Webster greeted me when I drove up in the QE I to his house, pulling a trailer with my mowing equipment. He barked a few times, sniffed around my Land Rover and me, and then sidled up for a back rub. Once satisfied, he turned his head towards his Range Rover, looked back at my car and then sauntered towards the left rear wheel of my Land Rover. He lifted the appropriate leg and let out a healthy stream of territory-marking juice onto the tire. I watched in horror and dismay. Kneeling down to his height I asked Webster directly what prompted him to take this course of action. Do we not all share the Green Oval? Cut us and do we not all bleed green? He turned away without any response. Now I would be the last person to accuse my Range Rover clients of training Webster, overtly or subliminally, to demonstrate such a dismissive attitude towards a Land Rover, but I might park the Land Rover in a different spot when I return to mow next week.
“Did you see the other Land Rover?” asked Raymond at the lumber yard. “What other Land Rover?” I wondered. It’s hard to drive more than 12 miles at a stretch on this small island – how come I hadn’t seen it in my work travels. I left the lumber yard and shortly thereafter, saw a blue Series II-A with NH plates. I pulled up behind the
Rover and flashed my headlights to get the driver’s attention – no response (“He was probably terrified that something would fall off if he stopped,” suggested one local wag.) Further down the road it pulled over and I met its owner, Ryan Swett, of Keene, NH and Portland, ME. Ryan lived on a sailboat in Casco Bay and found himself with little time to enjoy his Rover, so he had put it up for sale on Craigslist and quickly found a buyer, a new summer resident of this island. As promised, he had driven it up from Portland and would return to the mainland the next morning. We met up for a beer that evening and Ryan told me of his mixed emotions about selling the Rover. The Rover will become the island car for the Imber family of San Antonio, TX, Maxwell Imber, San Antonio, TX, and his father, Michael, had trolled Maine Craigslist sites for a Land Rover, found Ryan’s, and bought the car sight unseen. I met the entire family one evening when I stopped to introduce myself and share back issues of Rovers Magazine with them. Texas hospitality took over and I found myself enjoying a great steak dinner with a delightful family. Max wore the enormous grin of every new Series owner and completely ignored all the car’s faults and potential
problems. The devastating reality of all Series Rovers is that they will function reasonably well regardless of wear and tear or diffident maintenance. I could hardly fault Max for purchasing the car from a distance; my “test drive” of the QE I some 19 years ago consisted of riding around a farm field at 15 mph on a sunny autumn day. Max and I agreed that upon his return to the island we’d go over basic maintenance together. Three weeks later Michael called to say he was returning to the island for a sailing trip and wondered if I could tune up the Rover in advance “to make certain it runs.” Few activities bring more pleasure for a Rover owner than spending someone else’s money on someone else’s Rover! I drove over to their summer house and lifted the hood on the Rover. The engine compartment looked clean with no evident oil leaks. All fluids seemed topped up and reasonably fresh. I started the car, listened to it chug over the exhaust header pipe leak and watched the engine shake on its mounts. Pulling a spark plug required a breaker bar on the spark plug wrench. The tips looked jet black and caked over with soot (“I had to pull out the choke on the highway to get more speed,” Ryan had said earlier).

After checking the points for condition and type, I called Rovers North to order a cap, rotor, points, condenser, spark plugs, and plug wires. After replacing parts and gapping the points carefully, I pushed the starter button without touching the choke. Although the engine was cold, it started up immediately and ran much smoother. I then looked down the carb throat and found it, too, covered with soot. I goosed the engine as I sprayed carb cleaner down the throat. The car still stumbled sporadically at high rpm, but smoothed out when PB Blaster was sprayed into the carb throat while accelerating. It was time to look at the fuel system. The fuel pump did not resemble the familiar Land Rover one and looked very rusty; touching it at all would likely mean replacing fuel lines. The in-line fuel filter looked ok but removing the small cylindrical filter on the Weber’s carb body showed a lot of grit in the system. I removed the top of the carb body, removed the accessible jets and sprayed them out. The carb bowl also had considerable crud around the jets. Cleaning all this made the car run even smoother, so I buttoned it up and left it ready for Michael’s arrival that weekend. All weekend I waited for the phone call complaining that the Rover had stranded him – the usual result of my repairs on a Rover – but it never came. This means that either the Rover ran perfectly or I’ve had my last dinner with the Imber family.
In these dour times the effects of the current recession can put a damper on life decisions. The New York Times Sunday Business section featured a cover page article entitled “But Can It Make You Happy?” Academic researchers note that while people question whether the spending money on an item brings happiness, they don’t question that spending money on an experience – travel, learning new skills, a concert – produces longer lasting satisfaction. One reason for the impact of experiences is that we can reminisce about them. For example, even the most mundane trips – especially when taken in a Land Rover – can become memorable as we retell and relive the event. In tough economic times we all look for leisure experiences that simply cost less. Touring, exploring or camping in your Land Rover can make the shortest, simplest trip more compelling. When you travel in your Land Rover you join the thousands of adventurers who made Land Rover’s enduring reputation. In your Land Rover you feel special and you become the object of attention from other travelers; you’re not only enhancing your own life but that of others. In a recent travel photo essay, Timothy Williams of Indianapolis recounted that his brother, Hamish, had lost
his job in Budapest. Together, they bought an old car and set off to tour Greece and Crete. “We spent our time camping and traveling, and meeting people from all over the world like we did when we were in our 20’s,” Timothy wrote. “Keep in mind that we are both in our 40’s now and are supposed to have settled down. Travel is freedom, and the smallest things become an adventure. It’s a departure from the everyday that reminds you that there is a huge world out there worth exploring.” Above all else your Land Rover comes fully equipped for travel, anywhere and anytime. If traveling proves liberating and discovery resides in appreciating life’s little moments, your Land Rover should be your vehicle of choice. Remember that any trip of any distance becomes a greater experience in your Land Rover – start driving now.
J. D. Powers and Associates conducts numerous automotive product surveys. This year their “customer retention survey” measured satisfaction by rating long term durability, resale value and overall vehicle quality. This survey asked owners of 2008 vehicles whether they would select the same brand for their next car. Honda topped the survey at 64.7%, followed by Lexus, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Land Rover came in at 49% above the industry average- and just behind Cadillac, but well ahead of Jeep, GMC, Dodge, VW, Porsche, Audi and Mini. Sadly, Jaguar trailed the pack at only 26.2%, which may be why former parent Ford read Castle Bromwich and Halewood the riot act over poor quality in 2008. This matters to Land Rover as parent company Tata considers further consolidation of Jaguar and Land Rover components. Jaguar and Land Rover’s sales have risen in 2010 – let’s hope they both continue to get it right.

First Impressions: Range Rover Revival text & photo by: Nick Brenckle [Nick Brenckle lives in New Branford, CT, with his wife Dana and Brodie, the dog. Nick decided to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Range Rover by picking up a Range Rover project car. Here’s his first impression. –ed.]
Some might say it’s a good thing having a certified Rover mechanic as a friend; others might conclude that it may lead one astray. All I know is that when my friend Walt opened his own shop only two blocks from my house, I became sorely tempted to expand the Rover collection. Every morning I drove by Hometown Auto, and every time I saw another beautiful Range Rover, Discovery, or even Walt's own Series truck, sitting out front clamoring for my attention, I envisioned myself in another Land Rover. A few weeks back, Walt called me and asked, "Want to buy a ’97 Range Rover?" It had been one he had owned, then sold and now bought back anew. It had sunk in fresh water and thus had some electrical issues, but it ran and Walt pronounced it “a good project for you." Just like the Series Rover so many years before, I couldn't resist the purchase. Besides, I reasoned, my wife could use it in the wintertime. I didn't move on it right away and over the next few weeks each morning I drove by I noted that parts would disappear off the truck and onto Walt's own Range Rover Classic, starting with the ARB bumper and Warn winch. No worries, I reckoned, I can replace those easily enough myself and it would likely reduce the asking price. A few days later it looked to be sitting very low and I wondered if perhaps Walt had swapped out the wheels and tires. Unable to wait any longer, cash traded hands and I took over title to the Range Rover. I made a plan to go pick it up. My nephew agreed to help so together we walked down to the shop and checked over the truck. Walt gave me a quick run down of the issues. As he rambled on about technical matters, I pictured myself driving the Range Rover over the slick rock of Moab to the applause of onlookers. In my reverie I might have missed a few critical details. Some of them will undoubtedly return to haunt me. I first confronted the problem of sorting out the air suspension; the car appeared to have none. We did have a 4”x4” wooden post. We didn't have a saw. I did have a saw at my house but really didn't want to walk back home to get it, or walk home carrying an 8' long post. Walt offered for me to take his Discovery and go cut the board into 14" lengths. His Disco, the jacked up yellow off-road monster—yes! I drove this awesome vehicle gently, the entire time visualizing my Range Rover would look this cool upon completion. At home my nephew and I sawed up the post and headed back to Walt’s shop. A few minutes with the floor jack and the new wooden suspension sat in place. This will be a hard ride, I thought, even
only going the few blocks between our roads. "It'll ride like butter," said my nephew. "Now," said Walt, "Go start the truck. Keep your foot on the brake. It’s in neutral right now. Steve will climb under the truck and shift it into drive." Wait, what? I think this was part of the technical details I missed while daydreaming during Walt’s presentation about the Range Rover. I vaguely remembered something about a shift interlock issue. I looked back at the truck instead, and again pictured my Rover and myself at Moab, with the roof rack packed with camping goodies. I climbed into the driver’s seat and turned the key. Nothing—no click, no lights, not a sound; I popped the hood and noticed a void. "I took the battery, too," Walt called from inside the garage. I walked inside the garage for a battery and a jump pack. We got that problem solved quickly and I sat in the driver’s seat again. This time I turned the key and it started right up. It sounded wonderful—my dreams started up, too. I kept my foot on the brake as Steve, Walt's assistant, climbed under the truck and clicked the transmission into gear. He climbed back out and gave me the thumbs up. I drove off, a little hesitantly at first, fearful that at the first bump everything would fall apart. I hit the first bump. Nothing fell apart. On the road it felt fine the first few feet. I even got a little cocky thinking it would be smooth sailing the entire half-mile home, until I hit a pothole. With no suspension travel to absorb the bumps I bounced up in my seat and hit my head on the roof. My nephew started to laugh hysterically until he hit his head on the door. We gave each other the stupid grin that said, "Ouch! That was cool.” We pulled slowly onto the grass at my house and hit one last big bump, the wooden 4”x4” suspension absorbing nothing. I turned off the truck, still in gear, and stood back. “Yes, she’s a little rough,” I thought, “but such potential, a good summer project for sure.” It’s time to get started on reviving this Range Rover.

text: Jeffrey Aronson / photos: Land Rover Media “By Land Rover out of Rover—the most versatile motor car in the world,” proclaimed the first sales brochure for the Range Rover in 1970. “The interfusing of Rover car comfort with Land-Rover strength and four-wheel drive mobility has resulted in a vehicle that is really four vehicles in one, and each one a master of its own particular field… the Range Rover is a very special kind of vehicle. Indeed, it heralds an entirely new age of travel, bringing exciting fresh prospects to motoring in the 1970’s and beyond. ”In 1948, Rover had underestimated demand for its new product, the Land Rover, and orders flooded in as buyers waited months for their Series I. Rover used to promote the Land Rover as the “world’s most versatile vehicle,” a theme they reprised for the new Range Rover in 1970. Once again, demand overwhelmed supply as Rover, now a part of British Leyland, scrambled for funds to expand production. Just as enthusiasts have Maurice and Spencer Wilks to thank for leading the creation of the original Land Rover, Range Rover fans have their nephews, Peter King and Charles Spencer King, to thank for the leading the creation of the Range Rover. For a tradition bound car manufacturer, the Rover Company had surprised the

automotive world with the forward-thinking Rover 2000 and 3500 [P6 in the UK]. “Spen” King turned out to be a superb suspension engineer and he understood that coil springs, long suspension travel and permanent four-wheel drive could become the underpinnings of a vehicle that could go either 10 mph off-road or 100 mph on the highway. As Rover had accomplished with its 2000/3500 model, the clean, crisp design created by Gordon Bashford, galvanized the world’s attention. A quick glance at the castle-ridged hood, the high beltline, the airy cabin, the exceptional driving position, and the elegant ruggedness of the lines, attracted potential buyers, many of them celebrities in the UK and beyond. The Range Rover wound up as part of an exhibit at The Louvre as “an exemplary work of industrial design.” The Range Rover electrified the automotive world of 1970. Geof Miller, an engineer on the original design team for the Range Rover, told me a story of the early test drives with European sales managers. While taking the German importer on a road test trip in England, all Geof heard was the complaint that no one would pay this much money for a Land Rover! To convince the skeptical importer, the driver pointed the car towards a field and said, “Let's go
rovers magazine / 37
this way.” They careened into a rock strewn field and pounded the car through hills and dales. When they rejoined the paved road, the German asked only when they would be available for sale. Walk up to an early Range Rover and you’ll see a two-door only model with a shag carpet front interior and a cold black steel rear compartment behind the second row seats. Reinforcing its “comfort” factor were car-like controls and instrumentation that shared lots of components with other Rover and British Leyland vehicles. The box-section chassis followed the successful design of the Land Rover, but the 3.5 liter V-8, coil springs, disc brakes and a ride-leveler unit set this car apart from the Series III. Eager buyers in 1970 had to wait impatiently for Rover to sort out running problems with the car [cooling system, hot start issues] as well as production challenges such as establishing new assembly procedures for this new car. North America was certainly on Rover’s mind in 1970. The first sales brochure noted, “The working possibilities of the Range Rover are immense. Thus, although [in a catalogue] it is shown in United Kingdom settings, it is equally at home in some far-flung desert oil field, a ranch
38 / rovers magazine
in Texas, a site in the frozen North, or anywhere in between.” North American vehicles such as the Ford Bronco, the Jeep Wagoneer and the International Scout demonstrated that a leisure market existed alongside the working vehicle market. It would take another 17 years for Land Rover to meet ROW demand and figure out a way to re-establish the brand in North America. By then the Range Rover had grown into a more luxurious 4-door off road and on road vehicle, our beloved Range Rover Classic. The 1970 Range Rover was aimed at “business and professional people with a leaning towards the great outdoors, who want a purpose-built vehicle instead of an adapted one, the real thing instead of a compromise.” It matters not which Range Rover model you own— celebrate by driving your Range Rover to new places this year and bring the champagne. Remember that you’re only 40 once!
Charles Spencer King As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Range Rover, we also mourn the passing of its principal engineer, Charles Spencer King, at age 85. He died on June 26, in Coventry, England, the result of an accident while bicycling near his home in Cubbington. “Spen” King harkened back to a time when the Rover Company was known for its superior engineering. Stylists like Tom Bache and Gordon Bashford often felt that their efforts came as afterthoughts at the company. As demonstrated on Rover cars and on Land Rovers, thoughtful engineering created vehicles with unique qualities and character. It’s rare in the automotive world that one marque would have as many successful models as Land Rover has experienced—a testament to their engineering and marketing prowess. “Spen” King worked for Rolls Royce before his uncles, Maurice and Spencer Wilks, hired him to work for Rover in 1945. His expertise with gas turbine engines led to his 1952 land speed record. As Rover underwent successive changes in corporate ownership, new parents such as British Leyland and Jaguar Rover Triumph would call upon King to help create new vehicles. Indeed, in the late 1960’s, as British Leyland begged for UK government support, King’s Range Rover would be singled out for support at a time of scarce financial resources. Spen King went on to help design the Rover 2000, the Rover SD 1, the Triumph Stag, TR-7 and TR-8. Common to all these cars was King’s appreciation of driving quickly, capably and comfortably; his suspension preferences also link them all.
The Range Rover of 1970 set off a demand for the car unprecedented in the British auto industry. Production rose slowly—only a few hundred were produced in 1970—but the clean design, extraordinary capabilities and understated elegance appealed to landed gentry, Hollywood celebrities and royalty all over the world. A 1981 photo shoot in Vogue launched an association of the car with fashion and enhanced the car’s status as an icon of design. Grey market imports brought a few into North America, but we would not see a new dealer network and official importation until 1987. In 1990, Land Rover honored King with a special 200-vehicle run “CSK” model. “Spen” King regretted that the Range Rover became “an acceptable alternative” to conventional luxury cars. “To use them for the school run, or even in towns or cities at all, is completely stupid. Sadly, the four-by-four has become an acceptable alternative for the pompous, self-important driver,” he said in a 2004 Daily Mail interview. It might have made King the engineer unhappy, but the financial side of Land Rover recognized that the Range Rover’s status and success likely saved Land Rover as a company. King wanted his creation to be the ideal vehicle for work and leisure; as noted in the first sales brochure, “The working possibilities of the Range Rover are immense… Add your leisure gear and personal luggage. There is no need to travel light to travel comfortably, swiftly and safely.” The first Range Rover accomplished this in 1970, just as the current Range Rover lineup meets these criteria in 2010.

London to Capetown by Range Rover text & photos: Raymond Greaves [Raymond Greaves and his girlfriend Nereide left London in January for a six month drive to Cape Town, South Africa, in their 2004 Range Rover. Here’s the first part of his remarkable story. –ed.]
46 / rovers magazine
Two years ago my work in investment banking took me to various power and renewable energy projects around that continent. Late last year my girlfriend Nereide and I yearned for a trip more adventuresome than driving through Europe. Before we met, Nereide had little interest in cars and no contact with Africa, either. Luckily, she was the adventurous sort, and the thought of seeing and getting to grips with some of the African continent really appealed to her. My 2004 L322 Range Rover provided the rest of the inspiration. It is a Td6 Vogue, a model unavailable in the States. The engine is a BMW-derived 3-litre, straight-six turbocharged diesel that produces about 180 horsepower and 300 pounds-feet of torque. Having owned the car for several years I had been thoroughly seduced by its long distance touring and off-road capabilities. Furthermore, it had been outstandingly reliable. Driving it through Africa seemed like the sort of challenge it needed… We sounded out various people on the idea. Friends thought we were mad (“Africa is dangerous!”) Land Rover forum contacts mostly said “don’t be daft, take a Defender Tdi or, heaven forbid, a Toyota Land Cruiser!” As a patriotic Brit born not far from Solihull, that suggestion was out of the question. Our own research suggested the trip would not stand up to rational analysis, given the many health risks, bureaucracy and paperwork, expense, shockingly poor roads and the risk of bandit attacks in Northern Sudan and Northern Kenya. Thus it would appear that ours might be the first attempt in an L322 at an overland drive the full length of Africa. We also found a 4,000 mile “black hole” of Land Rover service support extending from Cairo, Egypt, to Nairobi, Kenya. This added to the question of how one might actually fix a disabled Range Rover in that stretch, or anywhere on the continent. Unsurprisingly the rarity of the L322 in Africa means that few repair shops could cope with its potential complexity. Great. Nereide and I analyzed Africa weather patterns. If we left in early January, we could pass through the deserts of Northern Africa in winter, making the temperatures more bearable. More importantly, it would enable us to get though Northern Kenya before the annual rains started in March. If we arrived too late the 500km off-road section from the Ethiopian border to Mount Kenya might be impassable. This would strand us in Ethiopia with no alternatives; as it would happen, we had a very close brush with this eventuality. While Nereide sorted out the medical and provisioning for the trip, I focused on the Rangie. Online research demonstrated that not much goes wrong with the Td6, but I downloaded the workshop manuals [over 1,000 pages for service procedures alone] determined the kitting out of the car, and sent it to Nene Overland, near Peterborough, UK, for fitting. My twin goals were light weight and stock specification where possible. Preparations included changing engine, gearbox and differential oils plus all filters and carefully inspecting cooling, fuel and suspension systems. We replaced two worn bushes in the front suspension and fixed a leak in the air conditioning system. A mesh guard in front of the intercooler radiator rendered it less vulnerable to big stones. We also shielded the wiring harness for the front height sensors. Reluctantly, I decided not to install the G4-spec sump guard
[rare and expensive] and an air-intake snorkel [none manufactured for the L322].
Our Hannibal roof rack carried a roof tent, awning, two 20 litre diesel jerry cans and a second spare tire. Land Rover recommends as maximum roof weight of 50 kg, but we knew our load would amount to 200 kg. For spare parts, we took an alternator, airflow meter, two rear dampers, two service kits, drive belts and a whole host of bulbs, fuses, duct tape, coolant and lubricants. I invested in the brilliant Hawkeye handheld diagnostic tool, a full tool kit and the workshop manual downloaded onto my laptop. Somewhat dazed after all the Christmas and New Year celebrations, we left London with no little trepidation on 2 January 2010, after taking the obligatory photo next to Tower Bridge. Our five month adventure would span 19 countries and nearly 18,000 miles, through France, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Jordan and on into Egypt. Here we would cross into Sudan, then Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and finally South Africa. We would also pop into the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. In January we cruised through Europe, grateful for the heated seats and climate control. Six days and 2,000 miles later, we became tourists in Istanbul. We spent a few days in this amazing city before continuing, crossing the vast, 48 / rovers magazine
undulating and empty expanses of Turkey before reaching the Syrian border. We anticipated that border crossings would provide some major hassles and the Syrian border did not disappoint us. Hostile border guards, all commands in Arabic and the confiscation of my cell phone were just the beginning; after two hours of grinding through paperwork and handing over $100 in fuel taxes in a filthy, smoke-filled and featureless building, they handed back my cell phone and we proceeded on our way. Unlit, unmarked and largely sign-less roads, sharing road space with donkeys and carts; ancient trucks belching acrid fumes reminded us that we had entered the developing world. The last two hour drive into crumbling Damascus
in the pitch black required super-human levels of concentration to stay on the road and avoid all the hazards—including drivers who thought that headlights were optional at night. The Range Rover’s xenon headlights proved very useful in these circumstances. Finding diesel fuel at all in the Arab countries was a headache as all cars appear to run on gasoline. I had no idea how the stock fuel system would respond to dirt, water and diesel thinned out with kerosene or paraffin. Additionally, the comfortingly familiar brand names of Exxon, Shell or BP were absent; we had no choice but to settle for the truck pumps at shabby, no-name filling stations and cross our fingers… In Jordan, we paused to experience Petra, justifiably one of the New Wonders of the World. Diplomatic pressures forced us to skip Israel [an Israeli passport stamp would prohibit entry into Muslim nations like Sudan] and pay an extortionate rate aboard a ferry from Aqaba to Nuweiba, Egypt—the one hour ride cost a ridiculous several hundred dollars. Arriving on the Sinai Peninsula, the spit of land between the Middle East and Africa, we subjected ourselves to yet another border crossing nightmare. Suffice it to say the ‘process’ took three hours, cost many dollars and all we had to show for it at the end was a set of Arabic number plates duct-taped to the car. We pushed on to Cairo, driving through serious thunderstorms and rain en route. Luckily Goodyear MTRs
don’t understand the meaning of the word ‘aquaplaning’ and we drove on through weather that waylaid other vehicles. Crossing over the Suez Canal we picked up the main road to Cairo and once again had to do battle in the dark, avoiding trucks with no lights, some of which also drove on the wrong side of the road. With Nereide skilfully coping with navigation in Arabic, we made Cairo after 14 days and 4,000 miles on the road. After a break to check out the famous Pyramids of Giza and secure our Sudanese visas, we started our journey up the Nile. The journey up this great river looked easy and we expected to get to Luxor, nearly 500miles from Cairo, in one long day. Wrong! The next three days gave us a sobering lesson in how difficult it can be to cover distance in Africa. Egypt largely comprises desert, apart from the land a couple of hundred yards either side of the Nile. Consequently the country’s entire population of 80 million operate here, growing fruit and vegetables and rearing livestock. We struggled to average 30mph. Donkeys and carts got in the way, suicidal van drivers tried to kill you, potholes and endless speed bumps made you fear for the suspension and we lost count of the number of police road blocks. Eventually, we made it to Luxor and the Valley of the Kings. Nereide, the Egyptologist on the team, revelled in it, but the experience was seriously marred by touts, hawkers, chancers and con-artists that tried to latch on to

us wherever we went. Even buying a banana or taking a taxi involved protracted negotiation. Sad to say, but we happily drove out of Egypt. The only way to enter Sudan from Egypt is the ferry across Lake Nasser from Aswan to Wadi Halfa. This trip forms one of the great ‘adventures’ of driving through Africa. The ferry has the reputation of a cockroach infested hell-hole, a floating cess-pit, vastly overladen with Sudanese taking all manner of goods from Egypt to home. It lasts 18 hours and travel guides advise westerners to book one of the few cabins for the journey. We found none available so we elected to sit and try to sleep on body-strewn deck, under the shade of a lifeboat. After landing in Wadi Halfa we had to hang out in the town that the Bradt guide describes as “the end of the earth” for two days before the barge carrying the Range Rover meandered into the port. Our hotel room felt like a prison cell—no hot water or flush loos—but at least it cost $6 per night. Offloading the Rangie from the barge drove my heart into my mouth as it involved driving the car onto a floating pontoon, then onto the quay, neither of which was level or stable. Once on dry land we could see that the barge operator had damaged the paintwork on the passenger side due to inconsiderate stacking of cargo. I had a good rant at the captain which felt satisfying but achieved nothing.

Immigration and customs in aggregate took about half a day, a process of truly jaw-dropping bureaucracy and stupidity, but then we were on our way. This time we were in convoy with a great bunch of Germans we had met on the ferry who drove, appropriately enough, two Land Rover Defenders. The journey through Northern Sudan was supposed to be one of the challenges, 200 miles of off-road straight through the desert but, to our astonishment, we travelled on a fresh tar road. The journey we anticipated would take three days took but three hours. Inevitably, it was the Chinese that had built the road. We found the Northern Sudanese to be extremely friendly and hospitable, but as we neared the capital, Khartoum, we felt a sense of unease creeping up on us. Sudan is a fundamentalist Islamic state and you feel it. As Westerners we felt watched at every end and turn and frankly, not very welcome. Finding Khartoum less than inspirational, we decided to press on, but not before given the Rangie its first attention. 5,500 miles into the journey I decided this was a good point for a precautionary air and fuel filter change—a remarkably easy job despite doing it in the baking heat in a side street. The rest of Sudan proved flat, hot, dusty and barren, so we happily crossed into Ethiopia. It resembled nothing like the Live Aid famine-and-hunger pictures still imprinted in our minds. It featured green, rolling hills, neat and tidy villages, wonderfully kind and friendly people.
We revelled in the historic, almost European-looking town of Gonder, the breath-taking Simien mountains, the amazing Blue Nile Gorge—the list of attractions goes on and on. Ethiopia could be a great tourist destination, but it does lack infrastructure. The main road through the country proved satisfactory, albeit strewn with people, donkeys, cattle and goats. Get off this road and conditions deteriorate rapidly. There are simple hotels, but the food leaves a lot to be desired. On our way to the capital, Addis Ababa, we logged the highest point on the trip at 11,150 feet above sea level. From here it was an undulating, down-hill run to the Kenyan border and another big challenge of the trip. T
he telephone call didn’t need to last very long, when a Rover enthusiast like Erik Dalton calls there is but one answer to the question at large. He was calling to see if I would be willing to put some important projects on the backburner here at T. Congleton Rovers. The expedition planned was going to require me to resume my role as field technician for another film shoot for Beyond the Lane, this new show will be showcasing some great Overland adventures. This segment would be an off-road expedition between Colorado and Utah following a historical Mormon Pioneer trail. All I had to do was make it through ten days in July in the desert. With the assurance that I’d be traveling in Land Rovers and that I would enjoy adequate sustenance,
I leapt at Eric’s offer. After sorting out some last minute requirements, I took off on our Nations Birthday to play in the “real “mountains of the American West. The team would be assembling in the groovy little mountain town of Telluride, CO. The group is headed by Erik Dalton who owns the extremely well equipped local outdoor gear shop the Jagged Edge. I would need to swing in there for the rest of the kit I would need for my foray into the desert. Filmmaker Ben Clark was to be assisted by videographer Chris Dalton, Group still images were to be handled by photographer Ben Edmonson, ably assisted by his wife Beverly. Mark Murray of Land Rover Roaring Fork would be our master trail chef. Redoxx.com CEO Jim Markel was along to shoot images for his next

website launch. Ben Clark runs a NAS Defender 110 4.0L automatic. Erik Dalton drove his ROW late model Defender 110. Ben Edmondson took his LR3 and Mark Murray accompanied us in his Discovery II Trek. Paul May of Equipt1.com, as our local trail guide would drive his FJ 100 Toyota Land Cruiser. The best (or worst) part of any experience is the people and thankfully we wouldn’t have to worry about that. The Beyond the Lane team sought to follow the Mormon trail with as much accuracy as possible today. We would be crossing the Colorado River by approaching first one route and then the other. The Colorado here has since been dammed to create Lake Powell thereby closing it to regular traffic. We would meet Paul at the lower Lake where he had set up camp earlier in the evening. We arrived at about 1 am in a very dark and sandy camp with an inky black mass of water bordering it. We settled in and then entertained ourselves for the rest of the night by listening to the roar of domestic turbo diesels as numerous intoxicated locals attempted to extricate their vehicles and trailers from the soft sand and lanes surrounding the lake. It was surreal to say the least. Approaching Lake Powell from the west took us on a 42 mile road from Escalante, UT, following the historic Mormon trail. As the dirt road deteriorated steadily, we encountered washboard conditions that limited speed to 15-20 mph. Obstacles—potholes, switch backs to cross dry river beds and the like—appeared quickly. The land felt inhospitable at best. Temperatures climbed to a 3 pm peak
54 / rovers magazine
of 105-110 degrees fahrenheit. Our on the ground “feels like” temp was much more relevant and I put that significantly higher! Certainly the heat and hydration would be the most taxing elements of the trip. My first experience with a desert sun repair arrived with a broken sway bar link on Ben’s LR3. The road conditions had shattered the ball joint and allowed the drag link to wrap itself like a horseshoe around the A-arm of driver’s front suspension. A wise traveler brings shade to the desert, so we hastily erected awnings to shelter a makeshift work area. With help I removed the drag link efficiently in only 10 minutes, working in the heat proved exhausting and disorienting. A test drive showed a tendency for the front end to “float” on the air springs—which now operated completely independent of each other. We needed the LR3 to push on regardless, as it carried three members of our team and a lot of our provisions. Our current breakdown locale would not constitute an ideal recovery point, either. We faced 7-10 miles of very technical driving before we reached the cliff faces where the Mormons descended in their wagons. Average speed fell to 5 mph with the “slow as possible, fast as necessary” mantra fresh in everyone’s mind. No sooner did we compliment the reliability of the injured LR3—call sign “Loco”—that she collapsed her suspension completely on a curvy cutout section of the trail. With no diagnostic tools I took the only step possible, cutting the battery power to see if the soft suspension faults would clear themselves. We hid from the sun for 20 minutes to cool down (relative) meanwhile the truck
rovers magazine / 55
slowly elevated itself and became drivable. Unfortunately our good fortune lasted only one mile when the suspension dropped again, this time to its bump stops. I made an effort to jack up the vehicle and insert firewood as a suspension spacer, but with no success; the LR3 was simply too heavy and it crushed any spacer we had available. With wheels (oversized) fully recessed into the wheel arches the LR3 would not move under its own power. We had little choice but to abandon the LR3 and arrange for a truck trailer from Salt Lake City to recover the Rover. Land Rover Roadside Assistance was less than interested in an off road recovery. We found their lack of enthusiasm, predictable. Unconcerned with traffic we made camp right there on the road and soaked in the vista. In the morning we repacked the provisions and people into the remaining vehicles and retreated to a box canyon with sheer cliffs. While exploring the Hole in the Rock we were hit by a massive weather event while the group was descending the trail down towards Lake Powell. Ben Clark waved and 56 / rovers magazine
yelled at us from the cliff above. Why the commotion? Within a moment the wind kicked up from a dead calm to 25 knots. The entire valley was funneling into the crevasse, sending sand and debris into the air and blasting lenses out of sunglasses. I scrambled to overtake the rest of the group and sprint to the trucks—many thousands of dollars in camera and video recording equipment sat in danger. I quickly rolled up all the windows in the three trucks—too little too late we would find out for two cameras. Ten minutes later the winds died out and we stood around for a shock and awe moment of respect to the unique desert environment. This would not be our only memorable weather event. While at another locale the weather changed from relative calm, to a quick sheet of rain generating mud droplets, to a veritable cyclone of rain, mud and sand whipping around our Etosha tent which covered the gear while we huddled in the 110. The storm left as soon as it came leaving any tent bags or miscellaneous trip gear covered in desert muck.
A ferry took us all across Lake Powell where we found the approach to the Hole in the Rock Trail. We were constantly assaulted by the heat in our NAS 110. She was the only unnamed truck at that point- “Skillet” from there on. Twenty miles later the pavement ended abruptly and we started a scrub brush and sand track. We could climb the 4,000 foot mountain height at only 5-10 mph, but at least the altitude reduced the temperatures in vehicle and at our campsite. We should note here that the entire trail consisted of skirting numerous ridgelines and exploiting their breaks to work towards what is now Lake Powell. Clearly the original trailbreakers required tremendous scouting to establish a workable route. This route was not what you would call a trail. We were rattling away on the finest coil spring suspensions in the world (Land Rover Genuine!) over large rocks and ledges; the Mormons used wooden wheels and no suspension! Our first significant obstacle involved a ledge descent that culminated in an off camber forward weight shift, causing one wheel to lose ground contact. After a heart-stopping moment with the ROW 110, we elected to take a slightly different line for the rest of the vehicles and add riders to the high side of each truck as insurance. The two 110’s, the workhorses of the convoy, carried a lot of weight up high on their roofs. Each had a mild two inch lift, a roof tent and six full jerry cans, an obvious increase to center of gravity. We ran at what I judged to be the limit of off camber tolerances. The descent was a great example of having to take your time, evaluate conditions, drivers and vehicles, and act accordingly. Over the next few hours the drivers became one with their Land Rovers. I enjoyed watching the approach lines of the group improve as everyone gained confidence. We’ve all seen it happen. A Land Rover ambles up to a huge obstacle. Everyone present feels certain a spectacular accident will occur if the driver makes one bad move. Instead the Land Rover climbs over and beyond with a
gentle flex of its muscles and perhaps a blip of throttle—so smoothly as to question the very existence of lesser vehicles. You begin to ask yourself, “Who would even consider a vehicle that can’t climb a five-foot boulder?” After meandering through the valley, the convoy approached a major hill that would provide the route we needed to reach the next plateau. A climb up a ledge face would start a half-mile drive across seven substantial obstacles. Erik Dalton and his manual shift ROW 110 would face the greatest challenge; the ROW 110 is supremely geared for all but the slowest crawling—which unfortunately had been our situation all day. This difficult terrain would make the 110 stall on slow descents and struggle to gain low-speed momentum on the ascents. Traction on the rock was almost too good—the 110 would stall while Erik carefully negotiated a punch. Erik took it all in stride—as is his nature—and did a supreme job as the hardest working driver of the group. “Skillet,” the 110, also has an inherent engine cooling problem, a result of the upgrade to the 4.0 configuration. Air conditioned 110’s utilize A/C fans to help reduce engine temps when needed; Skillets car lacked that critical electrical connection. Overheating will hastily ruin a Land rovers magazine / 57
Rover engine so we needed to find a solution or risk the danger of running the ridges at night. Given the desert weather I came up with a solution; we removed the bonnet and hid it on the side of a mountain beside a decaying cow carcass, hoping that would deter any theft. The increased airflow around the motor made all the difference. Even though the ‘cooling’ air was 115 or so, it was allowing much more circulation around the motor, and thus providing the desired effect. The next challenge came in the form of an 8-foot wide track, sided by a mountain face on the left and thousand foot drop-off on the right. Large boulders, intent on throwing me and the 110 off the mountain, littered the track. To top it off, the right side of the vehicle (blind to the driver) had to sit on the ledge itself to attack an off camber boulder. Even more unnerving, the right wheels seemed to run on loose gravel that fell into the valley like sand in an hourglass. I had visions of getting halfway through the obstacle, tire placement onto the sand, unforeseen difficulty or stalling causing me to linger longer than my predetermined comfort time of 1/10 of a second. The pressure would force the sand out and the axle would slide and sink over the ledge—taking the 110 and myself on a final career ending fall... See you next time. You can kit out your Land Rover all you want, but once you start moving, everything depends on your tires. Of the many requests for advice that I receive the most common topic is tires. They have many responsibilities; they support the load, isolate the vehicle from road harshness and provide the necessary friction to control the vehicle. Of course they also contribute to the vehicle’s good looks! Size, tread, construction, load rating, speed rating, compound, price and availability are just a few of the many important to consider in tire selection. We should also think about how the tires affect vehicle performance. Some important questions include: Will the tire and wheel combo properly fit the vehicle? Can the engine and drive train turn the tire efficiently? Will the tires selected cause damage to the axle shafts, prop shafts, u-joints or CV’s? Manufacturers do their best to equip their vehicles with ‘optimal’ tires. They spend millions of dollars designing and testing suspension and tires and the first thing we usually do—right out the door—is “upgrade” the suspension and change the tire-wheel combo. Changing the tires makes sense if you intend to spend more time on rough roads than 60 /rovers magazine
anticipated; original equipment tires are often a “P” (Passenger Car) rated tire fitted to a vehicle that you want to use as an “LT” (Light Truck). Given what we expect from our vehicles on our adventures through pothole-hell or traveling the Continental Divide in Wyoming, I suggest folks purchase an “LT” rated tire for their SUV. You can find your rating listed before the size.
Ply In the beginning there was the rubber tree…. Well, before that we carved our tires out of stone, but doing the Flintstone gave us calloused feet which got old and so we found the rubber tree! In 1843, Charles Goodyear announced vulcanization, the chemical process that converts rubber and sulfur into the much more durable vulcanized rubber. Shortly after, in 1846, came the pneumatic tire; further advancements in the early 1900s included the addition of tread patterns and the incorporation of reinforcing materials. Today metal, nylon, Kevlar and other high tech fibers are molded in the rubber greatly improving all performance characteristics. Ply refers to the pattern and direction in which the reinforcing materials are added to the rubber.
Bias-Ply tires have fabric laid +60 to -60 degrees from the direction of travel. Bias-ply tires have strong sidewalls, perfect for trailer tires, the most common application of bias-ply these days. However, true off-road tires can benefit from bias-ply as they flex well when aired down, allowing the tread and sidewalls to increase traction. Compared to radials, the crossing fibers of bias-ply are inefficient, wear badly on the highway, are hard to balance and tend to be heavier. Great off-road and crappy on-road! Bias-Belted tires combined bias-ply carcass with ‘belts’ made of fiberglass or steel wrapped around the circumference. The belts increase stiffness, resulting in improved handling characteristics. This construction is usually best for heavy trucks since it takes some weight to actually get the tire to work best. Radial-Ply tires have fabric laid perpendicular to travel (bead to bead) reducing wear and friction. Modern radials are layered with polyester, nylon, Kevlar, some other fancy modern cloth (or likely a combination) and some steel. Often a second set of steel “belts” that run parallel to rotation are added to stiffen the tire. The great handling,
long life and solid strength of radial-ply makes it the tire construction of choice for the majority of vehicles today. Most quality tires designed for our use are radial construction with 4 or 5 tread plies and 3 sidewall plies. This is a generalization as the are lots of specialty tires for off-roading like the Swampers, Gumbo Mudders and the like for their trail rigs and some of our friends will still run the Michelin ZM+S 244 Radial. Read the sidewall information up close to be fully aware of the tire nomenclature before you buy a tire. Tread compounds are important since some tread will last longer (harder); others will be stickier (softer) and give better snow/ice traction. Some snow tires are formulated to really bite the snow but you best not run them during the heat of the summer. The BFG Moab edition tire uses BFG’s proprietary “micro-links” which really grip (just like a climbing shoe). Since it is softer tread compound, will wear a lot faster than the standard KM2, but for the rock crawlers among us it is worth it! Tires have several ratings based on the government requirements for consumer safety and tire identity. On the sidewall of the tire are many numbers and letters that tell us what we are getting into. Sizing: Two of the more common ways to ‘size’ a tire is the “P” metric (LT metric included) and “Flotation” sizing. A third but older sizing is called the “Alpha-numeric” style that some of us ‘old-guys’ still remember. The alpha-numeric style was mostly related to 15” wheels or smaller. The metric rating came about with the bigger wheels due to larger brakes, heavy loads and higher speeds generally in the early ‘80s. Here’s an example of current tire sizing:
P265/70R17 – LT265/75R16 – 9.50R16.5LT – N78-15 – 31z10.50R15LT Other than construction style—light truck versus passenger, radial versus bias, the above size tires are all pretty much the same size. With all tires, my biggest tire concern while driving on or off highway is contact patch or footprint size. This plays a big role in how well the tires connect to the road surface. Contact patch is relative to contact pressure in that vehicle weight relative to the inflation pressure will dictate how much tire is actually touching the ground. Contact pressure is increased by decreasing air pressure or increasing vehicle weight. For example, given the same tires at the same pressure, an “up-armored” Defender 130 will have significantly more contact pressure than a Series 1 “trailer”. The additional weight of the 130 will squash the tire more giving it more grip. Of the many tire characteristics, contact patch (footprint) and contact pressure are the ones we can adjust easiest simply by playing with the inflation pressure and the weight of the vehicle—or contents. Interested in more information? I’ll have more in my column in the next issue. rovers magazine / 61

sightings
A big box from Rovers North washed ashore onto this island. Inside the box I found the Sightings for this issue, as many and as varied as ever. The impact and appeal of Land Rovers in our popular culture has been affirmed once again. When you launch a new product, why not surround the product with the glow of a 109” Series III Land Rover? Colgate did just that when it launched the Wisp, a new toothbrush. Todd Miller, Fairburn, GA, Gary Hatch, Lancaster, OH, Gene Lytle, Boulder Creek, CA, and Clint Rankin, Madison, AL, noticed [note to
on safari in their catalogue, notes Stephen Johnson, John’s Island, SC. Rob Ewing, Lower Burrell, PA, Kevin
Thayer [see Rule #6], Chris Whybrew, Broken Arrow, OK, and Brendon Mahoney, San Francisco, CA, spotted an LR3 in a Firestone Tire ad in Outside Magazine. Matt Rigby, Austin, TX, was very impressed that Braziltour.com stuck a Defender 130 in its
Jonathan Speed March, Dean Minner, Walt Brown, and Deanna Balzer, see Rule #6]. Kiawah
Island Legends magazine knows that lovely models, such as a female, a Defender and a Discovery, can make any sandy beach look special. Stephen Johnson, John’s Island, SC, read the magazine with care. Catalogue editors can’t get enough of Land Rovers. Ralph Lauren Polo featured a Series II-A soft top in their catalogue and online, notes Theodore Casareo, Jersey City, NJ, Dave Johnson, Rochester, NY, and Mike Dodge, Gig Harbor, WA. Rich Williams, Port Gable, WA, is quite certain that the interior of a Series Rover is included in the Blundstone Boots catalogue. Boden continues its use of a Series Rover to its 2010 catalogue, noted Steve Varga [See Rule #6] and Gillian Sullivan, San Diego, CA. J.L. Powell does the same with its latest catalogue, notes James Lyles, Bronx, NY and Stephen Johnson, John’s Island, SC. Costco Travel has photos of Land Rovers 78 / rovers magazine

advertisement. Brendon Mahoney, San Francisco, also spotted a Range Rover in a Budweiser ad during the World Cup. Mike Archer, Victoria, BC, Canada, also spotted the alpine windows of a Series Rover in a Carl’s Junior burger ad. Movie producers know how Land Rovers improve the visual pop of their films. Kurt Shaffer, Black Mountain, NC, and Chloe Miller [see Rule #6] enjoyed the Range Rover Classic’s role in the movie (?). Derek Leith, Frontenac, MO, spotted a Range Rover getting crushed in Kick Ass.
Michael
Friedie,
West Pembroke Pines, FL, enjoyed seeing a Defender 130 in The Expendables, as well as the previously mentioned I Am Legend. Kristin Minner, Carnation, WA, spotted a Range Rover Classic in the trailer for Ramona and Beezus. Phillip Haley spotted a Discovery II at the end credits of the movie From Dust to Glory. Katherine
magazine ad. Michael McClung, Livermore, CA, and his daughter watched an ad for Busch Gardens in Tampa, FL—now his daughter wants to go there to “get that Land Rover.” David Lane, Darien, CT, and Ivan Herida [see Rule #6] spotted a Series Rover in a Nissan Leaf electric car
Peterson, Acworth, GA, watched the bad guys in a Range Rover Classic in Kiss the Girls. Angelina Jolie, who once romped around in a Lara Croft Defender, now appears with a Defender 110 in Salt, notes Gabe Moudy, Plainview, TX. TV shows embellish their story lines with the good looks of Land Rovers. Derek Leith, Frontenac, MO, and Kristi Morrison, Oak Harbor, WA, notes that a tan Defender pickup has a recurring role in Haven. Michael Fredie, West Pembroke Pines, FL, watched six full sized villains step out of a Range Rover in Burn
winners Notice. If you watched The Price is Right with Annabelle Brown, Menlo, GA, you would have seen an LR4 offered as a prize, Steve Eisenberg, Manchester Center, VT, spotted a Defender 90 in There Will Be Oil. Mike Archer, Victoria, BC, Canada, noted a military Land Rover used by insurgents in the CBC series The Border. Justin McMahon, St. Louis, MO, and Eric Glibert [see Rule #6] enjoyed watching a Range Rover Classic in Dark Blue. Shawn Chummar, Beaverton, OR, spotted the side of a Discovery II in a commercial for Covert Affairs. Kevin Humphrey, Jonesboro, AR, watched the Outdoor Channel and noted that Chilean fly fishermen reached their destination in a white 110. Darrin Simmons, Mission Viejo, CA, spotted a Range Rover P38A used in The Fringe. Jonathan Speed March, Roanoke, VA, flipped past a Jonas Brothers video with a quick glimpse at a Discovery, another Discovery on Cash Cab and a Phinneas and Ferb cartoon with a Series-style vehicle in an English setting. He also spotted a Series III at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and the T-Rex restaurant on site, as well as an 88” on duty as a prop at the Kilimanjaro Safari ride at the same location. He also noted that a Speed Channel program on the AEV Jeep-based models used a Discovery as the “carry all” and lead vehicle for the program. Todd Cannatelli, Lake Mary, FL, took his wife out for dinner at the T-Rex Cafe, but only reported on the Series III—hmmm…Michael Henninger, Pittsburgh, PA, saw both a 90 and a 110 in Iceland during an episode of Dhani Tackles the Globe. Matt Joyce, Chester, MD, watched a Defender 110 at work in Jamaica: Paradise Undiscovered. The box that contains a Chamberlain garage door opener also has a photo of Discovery II on it, noted Tommy Dougherty, Sandy Hook, VA. Sherry Block, Hadlyme, CT, and Scott Peterson, Acworth, GA, notes that a Raid ad for Pyrethrum uses a Land Rover. To entice you to purchase a picture frame, the Malden company puts a Land Rover Series I photo inside, notes James Dunsdon, Junction City, CA. Mark Osterbauer, Phoenix, AZ, noted a Defender on the Tikka website. Outback continues its use of a Land Rover theme in its gift cards, notes Dave Bobeck, Washington, DC. Randy Kremer, Paramus, NJ, noted a Defender on safari in a Marriott Vacation Club brochure. Brian Hovermale, Anderson, IN, reports that the Trader’s Point Cremery in Zionsville uses a Series III 109” for tours. Glenn Massie noted that the Canadian web service Sympatico features Land Rovers in their “greatest off roaders” site. Steve Walls, Baton Rouge, LA, enjoyed an article on African safaris in Conde Nast Traveler, replete with Land Rovers. John Kostuch, Irwin, PA, noted a Freelander in a credit union promotional card. Matthew Kosaber, Johnstown, PA, spotted a Series III for sale in the classifieds of Lancaster Farming. Chris Carden, Seattle, WA, and Sheila Simmons, Austin, TX, caught the mention of a Defender in the newest Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers CD. In the news, the Wall Street Journal included a weekend feature on the Range Rover, noting how many celebrities seem to crash them in fits of self-destruction. Tom Rowe, Douglasville, GA, enjoyed the article. Mike Schoby, Peoria, IL, had the good sense to include a photo of his Land Rover’s license plate as a contest entry in Peterson’s Hunting magazine. We’ve mentioned their Sightings in previous issues, but thanks to Peter Lynch, Redmond, WA, Stephen Johnson, John’s Island, SC, Ryan Barker, New Bedford, MA, Vince Pernice, Tabernacle, NJ, Denise Champney, Charlestown, RI, Chris Whybrew, Broken Arrow, OK, Patricia Jansen, Leesburg, VA, Joey Boerner, Forest Grove, OR, Steven Dickerson, Dayton, OH, and Annabelle Brown, Menlo, GA, for their Sightings entries.
