letters to the editor Dear Rovers North,

Dear Rovers North,

I just opened my Woolrich 2009 Catalog and there are shots of the interior of an 88” Series II-A station wagon (LHD). I showed it to my wife, “Hey, look at this!” She said, “What, do you want to buy that shirt?” I said, “Heck, no — look, he’s sitting in a Land Rover!” Eyes roll — divorce proceedings begin?

In past issues of the Rovers North News, I saw that Jeff Aronson finally got his Land Rover on the cover of a magazine, albeit the one for which he sits as editor (and not the much ballyhooed, though unrealized, LL Bean cover that Dan Foley and his S eries I he promised us in issues past). I also could not help but notice that David Pound’s Series II on the Fall issue cover looked much better than Jeff’s.

Jim Gensler - Walnut Creek, CA I’m the last person you should be asking for advice on relationships, women and Land Rovers, but perhaps the eye roll signals awe of your perceptive insights into her psyche? Or maybe not –ed.

Dear Rovers North, I enjoyed Jeff Aronson’s column about simple repairs on Series vehicles. Don’t get carried away about the reliability of newer Rovers. They’re all overbuilt Yuppie Buggies! My ’89 was on a flatbed to Burlington [VT] on a first name basis. The ’97 lost suspension, blew a head gasket, and on and on. The ’91 does fine except for oil lines. My loss of faith turned me to a 2007 Toyota FJ. 50,000 miles with zero problems; well, it will need tires in a few thousand miles. Toyota will pick up the tab for some reason unknown to me. The ’73 88” and the ’60 109” are both doing just fine. Keep the faith in the Series vehicles.

Since Jeff seemingly can’t get the job done with his Land Rover, I have resolved to send LL Bean photos of my Series I. In Glengarry Glen Ross, Alec Baldwin says to his beleaguered sales team: “Coffee’s for closers.” No coffee for you, Jeff! On the other hand, I will be enjoying my latte at L.L. Bean headquarters in Freeport. Dan Foley - Burlington, VT

Ed Kollar - Taos, NM Many Range Rover/Discovery owners will disagree with your conclusions. I’m glad you’re happy with your two year old FJ. Interestingly, Toyota has recalled and offered to buy back 813,000 1995-2000 Tacoma trucks because of unrepairable frame rust –ed.

Dear Rovers North, I am contacting you from Mexico and recently acquired a Land Rover that I assume is an ‘88” Series I built in 1957. I am also not sure if the engine is a 2.0L or a 2.25L. I will begin work on it and certainly need a lot of parts, such as a master cylinder, wheel brake cylinders and brake fluid reservoir, valve cover gaskets, shifter knobs and other interior parts. Thank you in advance. Gerardo Stobl - Monterey, Mexico Land Rover extended the chassis to an 88” wheelbase in 1957. The engine should be a 2.0L if it’s original (many are not), but photos emailed to Rovers North would provide the fastest answer. Most Series I parts are still available, or you can upgrade to Series II-A/III components easily –ed.

Feeling a bit snarky, are we, Dan? It does make me want to retract willingness to diagnose your distributor problem on that very Series I (oh, how quickly they forget!) – ed.

Dear Rovers North, Is any thought being given to importing reproduction Series bulkheads that I understand are being produced by Pegasus in the UK? Mike Simpson - Golden, CO Mark Letorney noted that Series bulkheads are a critical need. Rovers North provides bulkhead pieces, and will repair and refurbish any Series bulkhead sent to them. Firms like Pegasus provide refurbished bulkheads, too. Rovers North is in discussion with many companies, in the UK and USA, to interest them in producing new Series bulkheads –ed.

Dear Rovers North, Thank you for a great website and magazine. William Leek - Olanthe, KS Thank Rovers North staffers for their hard work, creativity and enthusiasm for the web presence and print publications –ed.

text & photos: Vaughn Micciche Vaughn Micciche, 26, resides in Baltimore, MD, and on his family’s farm in Stewartstown, PA. When he’s not riding bicycles, farming or straining his Land Rover, he works as a web and database consultant –ed.

rovers magazine / 14

So I bought a Land Rover. I am not sure why I pulled the trigger on the Discovery II. I didn’t get such a great deal and about three months later gas prices rose rapidly. I do remember hopping in for the test drive and falling in love. I felt like if I were a truck I’d probably be this one. At the time I worked as a data geek for an investment firm in Baltimore, MD, requiring a 45 minute commute from my family farm in southern Pennsylvania. Right away the Disco changed the way I looked at commutes and farm chores. If the tractor wouldn’t start, which seemed to be the norm, I’d just hook the hay wagon up to the Rover. My first real off-road experience came on the commute to work one morning. A tree had fallen across the road and its girth was too great for the stock Rover. That provided the only excuse I needed to just go through the woods to bypass the tree. I found myself deep in the woods on an old logging path, with my return to the road blocked by a tall bank. The path led along a hillside covered in wet leaves, then into a washed out creek bed and then back onto the main road. Along the hillside I remember worrying as the truck slid sideways because of the leaves. I just took it slow and kept the front of the truck as high on the hill as possible. Things got hairy when I reached the creek bed. Old tires and mud covered roots combined to get me pointed directly at a tree heading downhill onto the road. I tried backing up, but the bald tires had no traction in the mud. I only had about 20 feet to go, but I couldn’t go through the tree and I couldn’t back up the hill. Fortunately I carried some chain and a come-a-long; doesn’t everyone on their commute?

I spent the next 20 minutes ratcheting the truck — in gear — backwards up the creek bed, then pulling the front exactly where it needed to go by ratcheting the front of the truck sideways. I would switch from having tension on the come-along and the truck in park, to taking it out of park and letting the cable pull to the left, then repeat. Finally I had the Rover aligned perfectly to get between the trees. I rolled out onto the road about 400 yards past the original fallen tree. As the day progressed at work, I collected a pretty large pile of dried mud under my desk. No one understood why I decided to go through the woods rather than just take a different road, no one understood why I enjoyed getting covered in mud while trying to get the Rover unstuck. Never mind, I was hooked. My Discovery would also become a major part of my bike life. In high school, I discovered a sport called Observed Trials. Basically you take a mountain bike and ride it on adverse terrain: over rocks, logs, cars, really anything that’s not a normal trail. In competition, someone will carve out challenging sections and then the competitors get points each time they put a foot down. At the end of the day, the winner is the rider with the lowest score — kind of like Land Rover trials courses, with your foot touching the ground equivalent to your Rover hitting a cone. This sport became my life through high school; it provided a distraction for my mind and a physical outlet that proved more rewarding than the team sports administered by the school. I remember sitting in class and imagining that I was riding across the chalk tray, hopping my bike from chalk piece to chalk piece or jumping up on to the eraser. We used to call it “section tick,” and now the same thing happens when I see a good track for the Rover.

Over time, the sport of Bike Trials has ebbed a bit and now has a much smaller following in the US. To offset this decline, I started to organize my own competitions. So now each season I organize 3 to 4 competitions and compete in 6 to 8 for local and national points. The Disco has morphed from a bad weather commuter vehicle into a traveling base of operations for my cycling adventures. Last winter I spent a lot of time in the garage enhancing my Discovery. I installed a new transfer case shifter that actually locks the truck into true four wheel drive; this was the biggest pain because I couldn’t get my sausage fingers to fit where they needed to go. I also installed a two-inch lift kit and bigger tires. Then I mounted driving lights up high and behind them, a hard shell rooftop tent from Auto Home US. A deep cycle battery with a marine isolate switch let me run a 12V refrigerator. This second battery required that I relocated the coolant reservoir. I ordered a gutter mount ladder rack to support the rooftop tent. Rather than burden the Rover with steel load bars for a roof rack, I ordered some aluminum bar stock of the same dimensions and pared 60 pounds from the rooftop weight. Completing a project on the truck felt so much more rewarding than projects at work. Just doing something tangible with discrete obvious benefits is like a breath of fresh air. Not surprisingly, the best places to hold Bicycle Trials competitions also provide awesome places to take a capable off-road vehicle. The first East Coast competition for the season took place at Allegany State Park in Salamanca, NY. Before I bought the Discovery, the road to the good riding used to be one we walked; this time when we arrived at 2:30 am, I flipped on the lights and started to drive up into the

middle of the competition venue. Quickly we reached a spot where the tires would each spin as the traction control cycled around; the hill and rocks were just too steep. Once I engaged the diff lock we popped up out of the little pit and continued up the trail with all our camping and competition supplies, bikes, and fire wood rattling and shifting all over in the back of the Rover. We nestled the truck in next to a boulder that dwarfed us, set up the rooftop tent and 5 minutes later we went to sleep. The next three days and two nights were spent setting up, competing in, and tearing down the competition. I fell early in the day, putting a sizable gash in my shin, but managed to pull out a 5th place finish in the Pro class. All weekend people asked how I got the Discovery up there and if I slept in that thing on the roof. Lingering competitors and gawking tourists gathered to make a pretty sizable crowd which watched us come back down the trail on Sunday. Cycling provided the impetus for three other weekend camping excursions in 2009. Sequatchie, TN, the home to the US Trials Training Center, also provided the site for the qualifier event for the World Championships. Three of us piled all our bikes and gear in and drove 10.5 hours for the event. Two of the three qualified for the team; I trashed my ankle, but it wasn’t a total loss. I found some really fun ATV trails mixed with some fireworks. Any time you can drive up tight trails and blow stuff up at night, it’s a good time. The trip home was the real bummer though, with my ankle swelling larger with each passing hour. Three weeks after the Tennessee trip I put on a Speed Trials competition at the NJ State Fair. Speed Trials is the same as typical Observed Trials but, rather than scoring based on points, it’s simply based on the fastest ride through the obstacle course. This trip didn’t have any four-wheeling adventures, but it did have plenty of camping antics; I towed a trailer with about 50 feet of ladder bridges, 40 feet of scaffold, and an entire stunt show setup. I’m not sure how we managed not to bend the trailer axle in the 4 hour drive to and from the event. Towing the overloaded trailer past 106,000 miles was the last straw for my Discovery’s head gasket. By the end of the trip the truck felt as though it was in 3rd gear most of the time. Taylor Congleton at Rovers North diagnosed the problem; low

power and an internal coolant leak equaled a head gasket replacement. Over three days and 26 hours I had torn down the engine, milled the heads, replaced the valve seals and built everything back up. I’d never done anything that complicated on an engine before; it worked on the first try and man, wasn’t I proud! In 2009, I took 2nd place in North America, traveling to and camping at all but one competition in the Disco II. The truck has far surpassed my expectations. It’s mainly my own fear and driving skills that hold it back. It’s tough to find challenging, accessible trails on the East Coast, but it’s not hard to have fun with the truck. It has become an enabler of adventure and the source of tons of good stories.

words: Jeffrey B. Aronson

You’re probably wondering about the photo of the QEI. Yes, that’s an outhouse behind it, and no, I’m not bolting it to the Rover to create a custom Dormobile. I live in the kind of island town where you have to be careful about what you wish for; if, for example, you say, “I’ll take it” to a carpenter who says, “I have an old outhouse to move,” you might find one standing behind your Rover one morning, just like in this photo. The delicate question concerned the contents of the outhouse. Specifically, I would have preferred “none.” With some hesitation I held my breath and opened the door to the outhouse. I peered inside – empty! As I already have one outhouse, this one will serve as a storage shed for Land Rover bits that should be moved from the house and side yard under cover. And yes, I will paint a green oval on the door. You can’t drive a Land Rover and remain anonymous, a face in the crowd, a backdrop in the scenes of your daily life. The iconic shape of the Land Rover Series, Defenders, Range Rovers, Discoverys and LR3’s makes them stand out among the creased line and origami shapes of contemporary automobiles. Bluntly, you need a bit of vanity to comfortably own your Land Rover. What price vanity? Apparently, according to the State of Maine, a lot more than the value of the QE I. When you register a car in Maine, your town gets to keep an “excise tax” based loosely on the MSRP of your car. Using the complicated, state-mandated formula, the town of Vinalhaven received $7 from me for 2010. For the privilege of receiving two-and-ahalf square stickers, one reading “November” and one reading “2010,” and retaining the QE I license plate that has graced my car for 19 years, Maine clipped me for $60. I mean, how expensive can it be to keep track of this?

rovers magazine / 22

So my vanity is worth 8 times the value of my car? Yep, that’s about the right ratio to me. Pardon me while I set my thumbs to “full rant” mode. A travel Q & A column in the New York Times revealed that a 21-year old man and his friend had planned a trip to Hong Kong this winter. His mother wrote to the Times, asking for advice on what he might want to see while he was there. Ahem, in previous generations, a young man – to quote P.J. O’Rourke – “would have been caught dead wearing ladies’ underwear” before conscripting his mother to provide travel tips. These young men populate Gen Y, those born in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Yes, they grew up under the constant gaze of helicopter parents, constant affirmation of their inherent goodness and in relative affluence. But they also grew up in an automotive culture that lauded the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Taurus and exalted the birth of the minivan. Kids who wanted to rebel bought – gasp - used Civics or ratty pickup trucks. When you grow up with that automotive DNA, it follows logically that you might have your mother plan your overseas trip for you. Unless, of course, you were fortunate enough to have parents who owned Land Rovers. Those young men and women, the recipients of stellar automotive genes, do not have their parents plan their travels. They’re off in their own Land Rovers, “doing something significant,” to paraphrase the BBC. We clearly live in different times if, as J. D. Powers suggests, Gen Y has let its love of cars cool in favor of electronic gadgets and communication devices. As this generation could well have a spending power that exceeds even the baby boomers, automobile manufacturers had better pay attention. J. D. Powers analysts suggest, “with the advent of social media and other forms of electronic communities, teens perceive less of a need to physically congregate, and less of a need for a mode of transportation.”

I’m old enough to have received this birthday card last fall. Two dinosaurs stood snarling on the cover; open the card and they’re saying, “Hey, remember us? We sat behind you in home room!” I’m not so addled as to forget two considerable accomplishments in Grade 6. One was to identify every car sold in the USA by the design and appearance of its taillights. The other was my promotion to Grade 7. Many underlying concepts of math, science, art, history, and English eluded me then, but the importance of identifying all marques, American and European [you just never saw an Asian car in New England in the early 1960’s] by their design signatures rose to primary importance. Teachers who interrupted classroom discussions over the merits of different engines, suspensions and transmissions received scornful, dismissive looks in return, just prior to assigning detention in retaliation. My auto-obsessed classmates and I were undoubtedly central to the decisions of many educators to take early retirement or find other professions.

reduced the mechanical beauty of the engine compartment to the drabness of back of a cellphone. They even share the same plastic covers. But that’s the beauty of a Land Rover. You don’t need to get intimate with its innards and internals to enjoy the car. Land Rovers have a mastery of the road, paved or otherwise, that comes through in every action of the car. The exterior design and the interior appointments demonstrate the thoughtful engineering that’s always been a hallmark of the brand. You experience it in the solidity, the balance, the responsiveness, whether at 2 mph or 70 mph. In a landscape populated by cars that hype their electronics instead of their dynamics, the Land Rover stands proud.

As a youngster who could barely empty the ashtray [yes, cars had ashtrays full of ashes, not change, and lighter plugs with actual lighters rather than cellphone chargers or GPS plugs], I sat in awe of classmates who claimed to undertake valve jobs on their cars. I had my tonsils taken out; back then a valve job seemed much more difficult and mysterious than surgery. Just learning how to change a tire became a feat as monumental to me as Leonardo da Vinci sketching helicopters in the 16th century. Above all else every car elicited emotion, love or hate. You stood in line to stare at the latest offering from an auto manufacturer then as geeks today line up for the latest iPhone. P. J. O’Rourke wrote, “the collapse of the auto industry leaves Americans my age in economic shock. The words are as melodramatic as ‘mom’s nude photos.’ And, indeed, if we want to understand what doomed the American automobile, we should give up on economics and turn to melodrama. It’s a tragic romance—unleashed passions, titanic clashes, lost love and wild horses.” My affection for British cars arose out of emotion. Their size and styling captured my sense of sight, their engines captured my sense of sound, their leaks and interior fittings captured sense of smell, and their suspensions and nimble handling captured sense of touch. Your car defined you. When my father once offered me his used 1965 Buick Wildcat convertible, I refused it and bought a used-up Triumph Spitfire instead. I was most assuredly not a Buick guy. My enthusiasm for them exploded when I realized that I – a man challenged by turning a doorknob – could turn a wrench and actually repair and maintain an automobile. No longer. Emissions, safety legislation and fuel economy have now

Nori, Neav and Fion Russell, pose for the camera in front of thier parents Discovery II.

Children get Land Rovers. They might treat the family sedan like a trash bin but they’re positively gleeful about Land Rovers. You know what I mean when you drive down the road in your Land Rover. Invariably, I’m in the right lane when an anonymous car passes me, their drivers and front seat passengers occupied by cellphones or multi-speaker sound systems. Their kids are restrained for their own safety, sometimes watching videos, generally looking bored. Then they spot the Land Rover and they’re wildly gesticulating to their parents. While the kids stare bug-eyed at your Land Rover their parents stare ahead stone-faced. Ask Sam and Brie Russell, Sun Prairie, WI, who recently brought home a Discovery II. As you can see from the photo below, their daughters Nori, Neav and Fion are beside themselves with glee over the Discovery. Would they look as charmed if Santa had brought a Sienna or a Town and Country? I don’t think so.

Mid-Atlantic Rally rovers magazine / 28

4 DAYS of ROVERS MUD & MUSIC Members of Gen X, Gen Y and the Millennial generations consider Woodstock ancient history; the Rover Owners Association of Virginia is only 6 years younger. It has aged much better than many Boomers, and ROAV’s Mid Atlantic Rally, held in October 2009, remains one of the east coast’s most popular weekend gatherings. Rovers North staffers fight tooth and nail over who gets to attend each year. The battle this year grew even more ferocious when the transportation was to be the Rovers North 2009 Defender 110 fleet export edition. Arthur Patsouris, sales manager, and Taylor Congleton, the field tech for fleet systems, won this year’s scrum. Arthur called the 11 hour, 600 mile drive south, “Everything you envision that is great about a Defender, multiplied by 10. The TD4 Puma diesel is so strong — after driving that, who needs a V-8? The new dash and ventilation systems really help make the car more usable on the road. There were no detriments to driving this car.” Airy Hill Farm, located outside of Bowling Green, VA, in Caroline County, served as the new venue for the Rally. It’s a 6,000 acre working farm, mostly soybeans and corn. The 7 miles of trails took over some 700 acres. The trails ranged from scenic green lanes over work roads, to some very challenging hill sections. For the first time in many years, the rains held off to add to the comfort and entertainment level. However, the clay soils of Virginia need only a little prompting from off-road tires to churn up the hidden moisture beneath and create plenty of challenging mud. Arthur Patsouris called the Defender “fantastic” on the off-road trails.

When not enjoying the off-loading, Arthur and Taylor set up the Rovers North tent and said, “It was a pleasure to meet — again — so many enthusiasts.” A Scotch and rum tasting event imbedded itself in Arthur’s memory, although, “Unfortunately, no one carded me.” Arthur remembers his first MAR, in 1995, and noted that annual events like the auction and dinner remained very entertaining. The MAR always seems welcoming to new enthusiasts who bring their LR3’s and new style Range Rovers to the event. Defenders seem to be the most popular vehicles, but MAR always draws a big Series contingent, too, along with the usual contingent of Discoverys and Range Rover Classics. Two years ago, when the New York Times wanted to explore the Land Rover enthusiast scene, it sent a correspondent to MAR. If you want to experience a remarkable Land Rover event, mark your calendars now for the first weekend in October, 2010.

Get Me to the Church on Time text & photos: Jacob Florer

Jacob Florer grew up in West Des Moines, IA. He has farmed occasionally, but presently works in public health in Manassas, VA. His father, Stephen, is a farmer, seed dealer, and consultant in West Des Moines –ed.

I have been around trucks and farm machinery for most of my life. As a farmer and seed dealer, my dad became and remains to this day, a gearhead. Consequently, he has gone through trucks like toilet paper since he obtained his driver’s license. He can name the vintage of a truck just by looking at its grill. Many of my childhood memories of car rides include moments of silence broken by my dad’s announcer voice saying, “fiiiifty-seven Chevy or siiiiixty-four Ford.” Because of this habit, I began to notice and wonder about what a truck said about the people who bought them. I couldn’t deny that many were works of art, but at some point I did begin to wonder what all the flair was about. When put to the task, most of us can name a point when we began to question things, think critically about ourselves and our culture. It happened when I turned 12; to this day I still remember my disgust when I learned about the concept of planned obsolescence. This might have been my first critical thought about culture. During that same time I saw my first Land Rover, parked alone in a corner of a shopping mall. I was really struck by its combination of beauty while appearing so simple and utilitarian. It was flat grey, no rust and in hindsight, probably a Series II-A. The image of that II-A stayed with me and became a reference point for my conversations in and out of shop class about what a culture’s cars, tractors and utility vehicles say about them. By the time I was able to get my hands on a Rover I was in my mid-twenties and had worked on a few restorations and rebuilds of one sort or another. I would have liked to restore a II-A with my Dad, but we simply didn’t have the time. However, I convinced him that we could have fun and make a good investment of time and money working with a shop. So I began the research for a small English shop that might refurbish as Land Rover. After several months I settled on three small shops in England I wanted to work with and asked them to keep an eye out for a vehicle that met our requirements. We were thrilled that the first vehicle that came along was a well-kept 1963 II-A, left hand drive, soft top, with 37,000 miles and the original registration number and plate.

The long-term owner and his friend also tracked the annual mileage from 1998–2006, which averaged out to 481.5 miles per year. We considered a range of refurbishment options and improvements. A frame-off restoration proved unnecessary given the structural soundness of the car. The engine seemed almost perfect; in fact, it is the best starting engine at any temperature of any car we have ever owned. We eventually settled on the kind of refurbishment that would allow it to be used as a daily driver, driven in a parade yet still be used for work without anxiety. We had the shop paint the exterior, put on a new hardtop, and install parabolic springs, new mats, seats, seat belts, and tires. The original transmission could have been rebuilt, but instead, we took the less expensive and less risky route on having a transmission swap from another vehicle. All along the decisions about details and incremental money transfers became a lot easier using Skype. Fairly new at the time, the internet telephone service provided low rates and the ability to call from a laptop when away from home. I also had to learn how to navigate the importing process. With some help from the English shop I scheduled roll-on, roll-off shipping and insurance from Liverpool to Baltimore. After several frank discussions with customs and the shippers, and many hours of internet research, I felt pretty confident about being my own agent.

After rolling off the assembly line at Solihull, our II-A made its way to the army vehicle depot at Irvine, an hour from Glasgow, famous as a staging area for the WWII invasions of Normandy and North Africa. We think our vehicle served in the Netherlands. Decommissioned in June 1973, to Owston Ferry and registered as GFU 84L, its first civilian residence was in Newcastle upon Tyne. Shortly thereafter, it spent most of the next 30 years in Allithwaite, near Grange-Over-Sands, Cumbria. When the owner died in 2001, it was bequeathed to a close friend in Elterwater, a town in the Lake District. In 2003, he succeeded in obtaining the original 1963 registration, AA0 829A, along with the registration plate. rovers magazine / 39

Our wedding plans tested my confidence as well as the first days of our marriage. The Rover arrived in Baltimore just in time to serve as the getaway vehicle at our wedding outside Washington, DC. I have some great pictures of us in the car from that weekend, but I wish I had one of myself driving it on the packed interstate between Baltimore and DC. Thankfully, I don’t have any pictures of my wife Melissa in the car in front of me. They would not have been pretty. I had not accounted for the long lunch that the Baltimore customs agents take and that, combined with a one wrong turn on the way home, ate up several hours not accounted for in our packed wedding weekend schedule. Shortly after our January wedding, I hauled it to my father’s farm in West Des Moines, IA, where it has enjoyed a relaxed life. During planting season when the outbuildings stand full of seed and the machinery sits on the lawn, the II-A sticks out and extends many conversations starter with my Dad’s seed customers. My guess is that talking about the II-A and its story probably adds 15 to 30 minutes to the average customer’s visit. It has definitely gotten muddy a few times, but otherwise, it appears at the local farmers’ market and church, or at the odd car show. The Rover has also become fairly well known as the mascot of an exotic car charity rally around central Iowa. It is definitely the most humble car in the rally, but everyone loves to see it on the road. We sure do, too.

Cross Country Rovers T

his isn’t a tall tale of jungle adventures or African savannahs. Compared with many of the articles we’ve been glued to in this magazine our trip sounded pretty lame. We set out to show our kids the western half of the United States before our move to Japan. We assumed this trip would be cathartic; however, it never occurred to us that it would change our lives. I’ve lived my life with the belief that the journey is the destination; all else in this life we cannot and should not control. We – my wife, Ellen, and children Henry (6), Maggie (3), and Abby (2) - entered the final week of our time in Newport, RI, trying to shove everything we’d need for the trip to Japan into our few bags, and steeling ourselves for an endless flight with three kids under six. The hardest part was preparing our beloved Discovery II for her inglorious storage box in a self-storage facility. We added fuel stabilizers, put in fresh oil and a new filter, and jacks underneath to relieve the suspension and tires from years of tedium. This was heart breaking – to us. Our Landies are more than our vehicles, more than our machines – an emotion that only other Land Rover owners can understand. A life with rovers magazine / 44

text & photos: Sam May Land Rovers resembles a wonderful marriage, full of passion, frustration, adoration, respect, and frequent trips to the store for expensive trinkets. To lock the girl away seemed to me like putting my wife on life support. This was our frame of mind, and worse yet, we had yet to deal with the other Land Rover. That one had a much more uncertain fate ahead of her. Our 2004 Discovery II is stock, save for some interior enhancements to further child-proof the vehicle. Our 2005 LR3 received some modifications from Jake Kaplan Land Rover, Warwick, RI. There we had a factory-approved Warn 10,000 lb. with both steel and fiber rope, specially fabricated aluminum shields mounted to protect the steering arms, transmission oil pan and suspension air pump. We also installed the factory expedition roof rack, which I modified to reduce its weight. Working with advice based on discussions with Land Rover Special Vehicles in England, I’ve upgraded all essential electrical wiring with marine cables, added additional water/dust protection around the exposed electronics, and installed more robust internal fusing and relays. Some of these modifications would enable me to hose down the interior of the car without hesitation in case of spilled / spoiled milk, old food, or other child-born afflictions.

LT Sam May, USN, is currently stationed in Japan. He has completed several tours to Iraq and Africa with Army and Navy Special Operations Forces. A paramedic, climber, diver and linguist, he and his family have lived, worked, and traveled all over the world –ed.

Here’s a tip: after you take your LR3 swimming, clean that pump. Then we were off! About halfway across Ohio, Henry, my 6-year-old son and traveling partner/navigator, asked me if this was the “doldrums.” He explained that he thought there would be more mountains, rivers, and forests. I explained that this was the Midwest, not the Far West, and that yes, these were the “doldrums.” Soon we would be in South Dakota and the Badlands. The Badlands holds a special place of awe and wonder for our family. This was the first place we had ever been to where my son could walk the same ground as his hero, the British adventurer Bear Grylls. We would attempt to survive ourselves, though admittedly with the help of a couple of very capable vehicles.

I reviewed which electronic components could be removed or altered in the event of a breakdown far from dealer servicing. From that review, I added some redundant system components so that a failure in the main system would not force the car into “shipment” or “limp” mode. Lastly, I mounted AC converters, dry chemical and CO2 fire extinguishers, a solar recharging system, medical and recovery gear, and communication equipment. In June, four days before boarding a plane for the move to Japan, with all the expedition gear sent ahead of us in our furniture shipment, we decided we couldn’t just lock the trucks away. We had to let them run, play, and get dirty one last time. We decided to drive across country from Newport to San Diego, via South Dakota, Boulder, and the Mojave. We altered our travel plans to give us some time to accomplish this, and spent a day or so with an atlas and Google planning the route, estimating costs, and figuring out the best places to bivouac. We geared up on the cheap (all of our expensive gear had been shipped ahead for a planned drive from Hong Kong to Rota, Spain) and we packed the kids into both trucks and headed west. Well, almost. Because this is a true story, first we had to limp to the dealer to have the “Suspension Fault” (and by that I mean the $800 suspension air pump) repaired in the LR3.

We set up camp outside the Badlands (away from the prairie dogs and plague) and we explored the power of wind and water to create such beauty through destruction (“destruction” is not new to me, having several tours to Iraq behind me, and assuredly more to Afghanistan to come). I had forgotten how beautiful this world can be when left to its own devices. Even our two-year-old stood in relative silence; as we hiked around investigating every bug, rock, and monument we fell more and more in love with the place. We became a bit more introspective, more thoughtful, the three-year-old and the two-year-old stopped fighting (for a moment). We slept that night full of anticipation of the road to come, and what more this journey could hold. As we traveled on, stopping in Colorado to climb to the top of a mountain, and Utah to climb and hike around Moab, our family began to change. We no longer thought about what had happened or what will happen, we became much more interested in what was happening at that moment. This is the true power of a Land Rover and the spirit to explore, nothing is out of reach. We’ve driven through water and mud feet deep, sand and snow, up and down hills so steep it would have been more difficult to do on foot – all to carry on the journey. My kids have never known they must be limited to a road, let alone a shopping mall. They’ve never known a car that can’t be hosed out, and they’ve never known a ride in vehicle that doesn’t require you to travel with a full set of tools and a diagnostic computer (even to get milk).

We love our Landies, but they don’t define us. They are, however, the only vehicle on the planet that can keep up with us. The Mojave in mid-July tried to roast us, but we had arrived to immerse ourselves in the desert. We drove out into the dunes (with permission from the ranchers and the Parks Department, mind you) and we set up camp. A tarp tied between the two trucks became the base camp, with a tent pitched under that tarp. We broke out the day packs and everyone carried their own gear and water. I carried the 2-yearold in her back pack, but she did carry her diapers, wipes, and water. We spent all day and most of the nights climbing dunes, visiting springs, climbing, and hunting snakes and insects. I taught my kids how to survive in the desert, and they taught me that life is so much more fun when you stop and play. Days later we arrived in San Diego. I halfheartedly washed the Disco, because even in storage Landies are meant to be dirty. We arranged for the LR3 to be ready for shipment to Hong Kong in the upcoming months, and sadly parked her next to the Disco. Our flight to Japan lay ahead, beginning a whole new adventure, but sadness filled all of us. Leaving these trucks behind was like leaving our spirit of adventure behind, and in many ways we actually did. It is us as a family that makes us able to do anything and go anywhere, and more so, to desire to do those things, but it is in many ways our trucks that give us the allowance. Without them, we feel weaker, more vulnerable, and honestly, less capable. Soon we will be reunited with our girls and the journey will begin again. Hong Kong to Spain, then from Spain to Denali – from there, who can say? Not us. The only thing for sure is that if you see us driving it’ll be a Land Rover (no we don’t have a car here in Japan, because we can’t find a Rover) other wise we’re on foot and little red wagon (with flames down the side); that part of the journey we can control. Everything else awaits fate and adventure to decide.

Bill Burke, Frutia, CO, is one of America’s foremost off-road instructors through his Four-Wheeling America program. For more information, contact Bill at 970-858-3468 or at www.bb4wa.com – ed

As I spend over a half of the year on the trail in my Land Rover, I have great practice at deciding which stuff to take along. I strive to take only the most useful and essential of trial gear; you can assume that if I’m carrying it, it must be useful. To help you decide what stuff to take on your trail missions, I’ll break down what I carry front to back. People say I can put 5 pounds of stuff in a 2-pound bag! All too often my D90 is very close to the 6000 GVW. It does boggle the mind as to how much I really can fit in the Defender! Client safety and comfort dictate that I must carry an oversized first-aid kit, a PETT portable toilet, common spares for field fixes, as well as all the paperwork associated with being a Guide/Outfitter. I carry an extra fire extinguisher, fire-fighting tools and 5 gallons of water just for emergencies. Already the Defender 90 has become stuffed, and I haven’t even started to list my regular gear.

I made a custom winter weather cover for the front of the windscreen area. It stretches across the front roll cage and covers the windscreen vents and wiper arms. It keeps the wipers and windscreen from icing up in the nasty Colorado storms. I also sewed my own “behind the seats cab” cover as well. Since I don’t have the back windows in anymore I try to keep the little passenger compartment toasty that way. On top of the roll cage I have two KC Daylighters 130w, now 20-years-old. Behind the lights on the roof part of the roll cage I have mounted half of a lightweight, low profile Yakima Basket Case. I usually carry MAXTRAX sand ladders, and sometimes firewood or my dry-bag. I still have the OE Bestop to keep the sun and rain off (mostly), but the back windows don’t even remotely fit anymore.

Let’s start with the kit on my D90. At the front I have the ARB bumper with a Superwinch EP9 with 90’x3/8” Amsteel Blue line. The 60” Hi-Lift Jack Extreme is attached on the top bar of the ARB using the HLJ bumper mounts. My headlights are IPF 90/140; the driving lights are the IPF 130W. The small IPF fog light above the winch is strictly for seeing the winch during night operations. I use the radio mount tabs on the ARB for the CB. I have the Rovers North diamond plate wing-top and bonnet protectors in black; I tend to set gear like pulley blocks and shackles on the bonnet so the protection is important to me.

Bill Burke with his Defender 90 loaded with stuff.

Under the hood I’ve mounted a Premier Power Welder, 160 alternator, Mantec snorkel, and standard air filter element. My 3.9 L, 180,000 mile engine runs like a champ, thanks to good, original parts from Rovers North and attention to the standard maintenance schedule. Inside the cab area the dash tray is full of stuff like tire gauges, Staun deflators, squeegee (yep, the windscreen gets nasty from back wash with no windows in), winch gloves, winch controller, radiator front cover (water crossing and winter), sun and rain hats, and door top window nut-bag. I mounted the CB radio on the right side under-dash with two 25-pound extension magnets stuck to it — easy to find and helpful for broken half-shaft removal. A bicycle shift lever attached to the gearshift serves as a throttle control when I need it for winching, welding, or compensating for a client’s nervous throttle foot on White Knuckle Hill. I retained the stock seats and between installed a Tuffy 10” Security Console stuffed with random things like GPS, original owner’s manual, gloves, Black Diamond Headlamp, small tool kit, a stereo and lots of miscellaneous stuff jammed inside. Under the seats: on one side, I’ve wired up two Yellow Top Optima batteries in parallel — no isolator, just clean wire looms, relays and aux fuse panels. On the other side sits the ARB compressor for the lockers, air hose, spare parts and the tire changing jack. I moved the ECU up to the firewall and waterproofed it. Usually on the passenger floor board I stash the winch accessory kit and, if it's snowy, the RUD snow chains. I customized the back load space by creating a bulkhead a la the Series Land Rovers. On the bulkhead I mounted the rifle rack and first-aid kit, just behind the center

console and the seat backs. The trough area just behind the seats has the torque wrench, jack tools and miscellaneous spare parts packed in plastic waterproof containers. This also includes wheel nut socket and a couple larger special sockets for the suspension nuts and steering arm nut. I enclosed the rear load space by with a board across the “gunwale” of the rear tub, securing it with aluminum angle bars and fasteners with oversized washers. A 12-year-old, trouble-free ARB refrigerator rests on top of the right side wheel well which gives easy access from the outside. I use Hi-Lift’s Slide ‘n Lock for front tie downs and I drilled 1” aluminum angle at the rear for added strength. For easy access with the tailgate open, I mounted my CO2 tank just behind the ARB. I customized a mount for the door top windows on the left side so the windows lean against the roll cage and the studs go through a piece of wood; a ratchet tie down strap holds them in place. Most of the soft gear — sleeping gear, tent, dry-bag with clothing, Roll-A-Table — is also secured by a ratchet tie down system. The hard gear goes underneath, again, tied down securely. I still use an ancient Coleman two-burner stove (purchased when I was 15) and carry kitchen utensils in Rubbermaid containers. I also store Wedco gas and water cans, spare parts kit, tool kit [see the last issue of the Rovers North News -ed.], first aid kit, welding gear, HLJ base, the MAX-Tool heads, bag of spray lube and cleaners, tire repair, spill kit, fire poker, extendable marshmallow forks, extra water and food items as needed. Hanging on the back spare tire rack is a swivel work light, shovel, Max-Tool, Pull-Pal 11K anchor, and my gargoyle. Inside the tire cover — a Joey Pack from BoomCo products — I have my recovery straps, winch extension, tri-fold NATO shovel, limb saw, butt wipes and TP, and trash bags. Finally, on the rear of my 90 are two IPF clear fog lights, for backing up or setting up camp. My recovery bracket sits inside the receiver. There you have it! Over the years I have tried to keep the amount of stuff minimal. It doesn’t always work out that way and indeed, the D90 does get loaded to the gills… with stuff. See you on the trail!

text & photos: Jeffrey Aronson Snapping a half shaft is considered a right of passage for Series Land Rover enthusiasts. With even the newest Series III now almost 25-years-old, it’s a likely occurrence for owners (it’s happened to me three times in 500,000 miles of driving). Land Rover designed the rear floating axle to act like a shear pin or clutch release in an outboard motor. The axle shaft, a long rod with splined ends, will snap first, protecting the more critical differential.

sharply defined splines. My heart sank when I discovered the left one in the same pristine condition.

So, last summer when backing up my work trailer over some rocks resulted in a nasty bang and grinding noises, I stopped my ’66 Series II-A and assumed that this would be Time #4. I unbolted the right axle — the most common one for breakage — and found it in perfect condition — smooth surfaces with

Engaging 4-wheel drive did let me move forward to maneuver the trailer, but the car made awful noises when I tried to move in reverse. A call to Rovers North for advice found a general consensus that I had lunched the rear differential, specifically the spider gears.

rovers magazine / 54

With a snapped axle, you can generally put the car in 4-wheel drive with the yellow lever and drive away in front wheel drive. While it’s best to remove the snapped axle and any offending pieces adrift in the differential, you can get home in an emergency and hope for the best.

The QE I must work for a living, specifically mine. With my other Rover, the QM I, down for a new master cylinder, I needed to commence repairs immediately. First came the removal of the rear prop-shaft (9/16th bolts with nyloc nuts). Since the u-joints were fine, I set the driveshaft aside. Then I removed the axles again by unbolting the drive flange and its 1/2” bolts, and pulling out each axle. Some hypoid leaked out, so I stuffed a rag into each hole. Then I remembered to drain out the hypoid oil. I have a socket with a large flat tip for this purpose, but an open end wrench held sideways will accomplish the same task in a pinch. My II-A has the early-style “banjo” rear end (so named for the round shape of the axle housing); Series III owners will have the stronger Salisbury rear axle with a more rectangular shape. The differential sits inside its housing, which is bolted together by a dozen nuts, facing forward behind the pinion seal in the nose of the housing. Removing the 1/2” nuts went smoothly for a change. When I slid off the front half of the housing, I could see the differential, as well as pieces of the spider gears flung all over the place. I lifted out the differential (it’s heavy so be prepared) to assess the damage, which was substantial. I had not only broken the spider gears but put a hole in their carrier housing as well. That’s the sad part, as the spider gears are still available from Land Rover but the carrier hub is now NLA. Where was I quickly going to find a replacement differential? My thoughts turned to a large tin sitting under my front porch. Several years ago, I had failed in an effort to wrest a ran-when-parked Series Land Rover from its distant owner, but had walked off with a collection of parts that were otherwise headed for our local dump. Opening the tin revealed a differential, smothered with grease and wrapped in an old shower curtain. It had very little rust, looked complete, and turned quietly without any untoward movement. The mechanic at our local garage wiggled it around, looked at the gear teeth and edges, and pronounced it in good shape. Now it was time to clean out all the bits and pieces of the spider gear from the differential housing. I used the better part of a can of brake cleaning spray and a hand magnet to remove everything. I also found that the shards of the gears had pierced the rear housing so I patched the pinholes with metal putty.

Given that I use my over every day, I keep a Rovers North differential housing/axle flange gasket kit on hand for emergencies. I lifted the replacement differential back into the housing with the spider gears facing each axle. I cleaned off the housing surfaces, placed the gasket over the studs, and bolted the halves together. Then I inserted the axles, set the flange gaskets in place and installed the flange bolts around the center of the wheels. I filled the differential with fresh hypoid. With my heart in my throat I started up the Rover and pulled forward, quietly and smoothly. There were no “clunking” sounds or “thunking” jolts as I moved forward and back. A differential failure is an uncommon experience; the more likely repair will involve replacing a broken axle. However, a proper axle replacement should involve removing and cleaning out the differential housing, as you don’t want metal shards spinning around the differential’s gears. Broken axles usually telegraph their imminent failure to those who listen to your car. Mine had been signaling me for some time through “banging” sounds while driving with the heavy trailer. What I thought was a loose trailer clamp at the ball was really a differential on its way out. The total time was 2 hours. The only tools required were 1/2” and 9/16th” sockets and open end wrenches, and a scraper. It’s a relief when a field repair goes well.

Aluminum Spike2009 text & photos: Rik Olsen

Rik Olsen, Hastings, MN, uses his Discovery I often for family expeditions. This trip to Ontario proved a special one for all the participants –ed.

rovers magazine / 56

We had been around Lake Superior on the Circle Tour twice. This year we realized that while a beautiful drive, it was almost all on roads. This time we decided to go straight north to Ontario and explore the fire roads and remote areas only accessible by 4-wheel drive. When I imagined the overhead view of the map of the trip it looked like a spike up north into Canada. On an earlier camping trip to old train tracks in Wisconsin, I had found plenty of spent railroad spikes. Painted silver, they became coveted “aluminum spikes.” One lucky spike would mark our northernmost ingress into the wilds. A second one would serve as a “Team Spirit” award. The trip was like an éclair: sweet and gooey with a crusty exterior and some brown sticky on top. The initial 5–6 Rovers left Minnesota on different days. We tried to get a handle on this at our Minnesota Rovers meeting when Gustaf Kupetz and I presented the outline of the trip. The wild card became the most consistent player; Heather Armstrong, a retired 3rd grade teacher and Land Rover enthusiast, joined us from Michigan. She has made the most of her 2004 Discovery II SE7 as one would expect from someone who has been off-roading since she and her sister used to try to get their dad’s Willys stuck. This seven day trip living out of the Discovery was to be adventure enough. I amplified that challenge by bringing my wife, Kelly, and kids Grace, age 9, and Dane, age 7. We left our home and arrived at Nipigon’s Birchwood Inn just as they were locking up. Heather found us and we set up tents and martinis for our first night out. The next day shone clear, and at the Birchwood’s breakfast, we met Phil. He encouraged us to tag along with him on a trail to a nearby waterfall. We met up with Phil’s son Roger and his long time girlfriend, Monique, and their friends. The low waterfall acted as a log trap for the upriver tree cutting. The flat part below the dam contained puddles for crayfish and tadpoles. Dane fell into one waterhole and soaked his outfit. “This is the worst day of my life,” he cried! “Worst day of your life so far,” I corrected, Homer Simpson style. Afterwards, some easy trails lead us to the town dump, which serves as a buffet table for local bears; we counted four. The recent heavy rains left the typically dry tracks with a lush thick grass disguising the mud just below the roots. The heavy Discoverys bogged down quickly and needed winching after winching from our gracious hosts in their SWB Jeeps. It was not a good sales pitch for Land Rover. Johnny, a gracious Jeep owner, reminded us of the convenience of having a hard top when his topless Jeep threw “rooster tails” of mud all over its occupants. The bugs formed black clouds as they bounced off us. Afterward, the boat launch by the hydroelectric plant served as an excellent underbody wash site.

Sometime in the middle of the night, Tony and his wife, Shauna, arrived at the Birchwood Inn driving their Range Rover Hunter. They also expected Gustaf and his long time girlfriend, Whitney, by midday in his Defender 110 NAS. Whitney has been a tremendous asset. A native of Canada and current resident of Minnesota, she serves as our translator for idioms and guide for foods. The Discovery I, Discovery II and the Range Rover Hunter followed Phil down to those flats below the log cache dam. Shauna showed her true colors in the puddles by running off with my kids and showing them skills at crayfish handling. Then we drove to Phil’s estate and mountain — he really owns a mountain. From his driveway, we looked up to a rocky outcropping that silhouettes a profile of a bear, thus Bear Mountain. The top features amazing vistas as well as excellent blueberries yet undiscovered by the local bears. We drove as far as we could and walked the rest of the way. Gustaf and Whitney by then had been well-fed by the Birchwood and were ready to get into some of that mud as described above. However, I still had that Aluminum Spike to plant. We chose to split up and reconnect the next day. That gave my family and Heather 24 hours to drive 240 miles round trip, half of that on dirt, and deliver the spike to Armstrong, Ontario. We were off! rovers magazine / 57

The low maintenance forest road took much of the day. Heather could follow our progress on her laptop GPS, so there were very few wrong turns. We finally passed through the town to the northern side and wound our way down dirt turn off to a lakeshore, perfect if windy for the overnight. We found the north edge of the clearing and nailed that spike in the base of a pine tree, then marked the coordinates as: N 50 degrees, 20.2931 minutes by W 89 degrees, 4.9490 minutes. The rain was coming so we went to bed. rovers magazine / 58

We broke camp and explored a bit of Armstrong. There is an “everything” store and a gas station. It seems to be a place where people fly into on pontoon planes for fishing. We gassed up even though we had calculated that we could manage the range if there were no fuel stops — no point being macho about it. Then, we sped back to Nipigon, falafel heating up on the manifold. The rest of the group had planned another afternoon of getting stuck in the mud until dark, but traveling with kids meant forgoing some thrills, so we camped at the

Birchwood and enjoyed a mellow evening. The rest made it back eventually and then set out to the top of the falls camping site, about a one-hour night trail ride. The next morning we followed directions, Phil’s map, and the little orange ribbons tied to trail side tree branches. The trail went through a beaver dam, over narrow wood bridges, and through long flooded areas. We arrived midday as the other half of our group was awakening. My little family slid down the hills and ledges through the forest to the base of the waterfall — gorgeous. Dane and I jumped into the chilly water — it was… refreshing. We ambled and scrambled back up to the campsite and made lunch. Now, rolling all together, we arrived at the waterfall with the walk behind area. It was slippery and scary and simply majestic. Dane attracted the attention of a little leech, which he himself plucked off and recounted the similar James Bond scene. There were tiny blue and yellow-green mushrooms at the base of the rope assisted climb back to the top. The next trail narrowed down, requiring us to get out the chain saw. Roger showed us some marten traps near the end where the trail turned to a marshy small lake. The bugs were impressive, but not as impressive as the pile of moose scat there. We had not seen any of these tall heavy beasts despite our surroundings. Then, we set off for our campsite at a different logging dam. This place is just one paradise setting after another. After setting up, we realized there was time to explore a trail that Roger had seen but not driven. We were ready to cross that below dam section of water and enter the unknown. Roger led us through this very old logging area up and over and down and through the undulations of this very rough spot. We winched and strapped and pulled each other until we reached a marsh. Poking a stick through the mud revealed a bottom eight feet below. Roger had not really challenged his well built Jeep, so he gave a good run at the bog. We had already strapped his rear recovery point expecting to have to pull him back. I did the honors, kinetic rope style. He was a little surprised at the force of the tug and joked, “What are you, French?” (Must be a Canadian joke.) On the way back to camp, Roger found he had broken a front half shaft; soon after, he realized he also had dropped his rear drive shaft. Instead of towing him out, he chose to ride along and return the next day with the repair parts. That night we giggled and talked at the campfire. Roger climbed out to the middle of the dam and whittled 2 kid-size chairs out of a log by using a chainsaw. Grace and Dane were so tickled that I knew I had to bring them home. We then planted my “spare” Aluminum Spike at this idyllic spot. Roger, of course, earned the “Team Spirit” prize spike.

rovers magazine / 59

The next morning, I swapped out my bent steel wheel with my straighter spare and figured out that the “check engine” light was on because I had torn the exhaust at the muffler. Re-hanging the tailpipe pinched the hole shut and extinguished the light. The morning held a veil of fog over the lake and dam. Not enough can be said of the beauty of this area; the scenery amplified my melancholy as that was our last night in Canada. Half of the group left for the Minnesota Land Rovers “picnic” weekend and the other half lingered to assist Roger in getting back out of the woods. The trails at Gilbert, Minnesota’s off-road park, were unusually ruthless as they claimed several members’ axles, body panels, and even my own rear bumper. The club held a lovely evening meal at the campground and many lovely raffle items from Rovers North, Atlantic British, Optima, and Expedition Autoworks were distributed and cherished. As usual, these trips exhaust me as they challenge me to problem solve in ways so different from my usual days at home. I return eagerly home yet start planning the next trip. Yes, I still like éclairs.

sightings UPS shipments on this island start with a local family unloading boxes from the big brown truck onto their front lawn. The UPS truck returns to the mainland and the family parcels out packages to other family members for eventual delivery. So it wasn’t surprising when a woman flagged me down on the road and handed me a huge box, filled with the latest Sightings. She looked happy to get rid of the heavy package. I could see why – there were hundreds of entries this issue!

Previously mentioned TV program episodes with Land Rovers captured the attention of Nathan Miller [See Rule #6], James Dargan, Plymouth, MA, and Katie Spurr, St. Louis, MO. Jeff Austin, Chesapeake, VA, also saw the Dr. Shoals ad with a Land Rover in it. Fans of the telly programs NCIS spotted Rovers again in episodes: thanks to Sherry Block, Hadlyme, CT, Dick Newton, Charlestown, RI, and James Dargan, Plymouth, MA, reminded us of their presence. Ernie Novey, East Hartford, CT, also reminded us of their presence in The Unit. Jeff Austin, Chesapeake, VA, spotted the late Billy Mays in this black Range Rover on an infomercial. James Gabor, Rochester, MN, noted a Series II 109” on a public television program on a cattle ranch. There’s a new show on the SyFi Channel called Sanctuary. Ray Burton, Soddy Daisy, TN, and John Kostuch [See Rule #6] spotted the Defender 90. Ratings for the Jay Leno Show have been lower than expected, but putting a D-90 in the promos might help. Jay Champney, Charlestown, RI, Eric Stephens, Norman, OK, and Allen Minner, Carnation, WA, all saw the ad.

Kathy Tyson, Greenville, NC, “trumped my husband” with a Rover sighting in the Land’s End “Year of the Cardigan” catalogue. She spotted an 88” “while admiring a new pair of boots.” Erik Petris, Orange Park, FL, and Gordon Gunn, Chester, VA, spotted the same Rover. The fall “Polo” catalogue and Polo store displays all have a rear view of a Series Rover in full view. Sheila Simmons, Austin, TX, August Davino, Short Hills, NJ, and James Dargan, Plymouth, MA, sent in the examples. Barry Fein, Hermosa Beach, CA, spotted a
