Bilstein® is the world leader in gas-pressurized shock absorber technology. Technically the most advanced shock available today, Bilstein utilizes a one piece seamless monotube design filled with oil and nitrogen gas in a pressurized, sealed compartment. Completely eliminates any foaming of the oil and the monotube design helps dissipate heat to prevent shock fade. Bilstein’s shock bodies are precision-formed through a unique seamless manufacturing process. We recommend for use with Land Rover Genuine Standard or Heavy Duty springs. Employee Profile – Erik Brennan It took a couple of decades and a trip across the Atlantic for Erik Brennan to become a Sales Technician at Rovers North but he’s thrilled to be there. Erik was born in Fredricksta, Norway and came to the US as a youngster in 1972. He was raised in Vermont and now lives in Westford, 3 miles away from Rovers North. Erik brings a wealth of automobile parts experience and Land Rover enthusiasm to his position at Rovers North. Since he started working full time in 1978, he’s been in the auto parts business. “I’ve worked for large automobile dealerships and multiline parts companies. I took auto mechanics in school back in the ‘70’s just as electronic ignitions were becoming more common. Our instructor used to give us an old points distributor that he had doctored up as a test. He’d hand it to us and say “Make it run.” We developed a good understanding for the points-based systems as well as the newer electronic ignitions. For a while Erik turned a wrench for service stations around Westford.
ble check that the customer is ordering the right one. So I always ask “What Land Rover do you have? What year is it? Have you converted it from a generator to an alternator? I have to know if they’ve used the 3-wire Lucas or the 1-wire GM system. They’re totally different. We have information about how to make the conversion to the Lucas alternator.” Where does Erik get the information? “We have a lot of information in our past catalogues and from Land Rover technical publications. We have CD-ROM’s and manuals from Land Rover. Our Rovers North News and technical pieces in the British Land Rover magazines are also discussed among the staff. The most important help comes from the knowledgeable individuals at Rovers North. Our tech training sessions teach us a lot about the newer Land Rovers. We’re even rebuilding a Series II-A so we can learn more about our parts and help enthusiasts maintain and improve their Land Rovers.” Lastly, Erik checks the real-time inventory to determine that the
Just prior to his hiring at Rovers North, he worked for the regional Harley Davidson dealership. Why did he choose to work at Rovers North? Erik says that “After Harleys, Land Rovers were always my favorite vehicles. I used to hang around Barnes and Noble in Burlington, waiting for the British Land Rover magazines to arrive.” “When I started at Rovers North, I asked [sales manager] Arthur Patsouris if my experiences with classic motorcycles would help me. Arthur noted that ‘the old Series vehicles are as simple to troubleshoot as the old Indians and Harleys.’ ” When you speak with Erik for technical assistance or to order a part, many steps he takes are hidden from view. “For example, if you thought you needed to order an alternator, I would ask “What is going on? Are the lights dim, is the car hard to start, has the battery gone dead? What leads you to believe that you need an alternator? Maybe it’s just a bad cable, wire or connection. I try to diagnose the source of the problem with the customer.” “If we determine the need for the alternator, then I want to dou-
necessary part is in stock. “I check an inventory screen that keeps track of every part. I can also determine whether the part number can be cross referenced with other parts in case we need to provide an alternative part.” “I don’t want you ordering the wrong part or one you don’t need. The first thing I ask is “what year and what model Land Rover do you have?” Customers sometimes say ‘Rovers are all the same. Any part will fit.’ Well, not really. Even if you think you know what you need, I’d rather look the part up myself to make certain it’s the right one. Erik is searching for his first Land Rover. Right now, he drives a Ford Escape, a car he claims is “a cousin to the Land Rover LR3.” He has his eyes out for “a Series II or II-A but I’d want to update it with our high ratio gearbox and parabolic springs.” He’s engaged to Michelle Kolinich of Westford and will soon form a new Brady Bunch family. They’ll want that Land Rover so “we can disappear in Vermont and Maine north woods.” _______ ! ________ 43
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Howdy Y’All! I thought you might enjoy this description of a photo I found in the December 2006 issue of Vanity Fair. I’m not sure what the accompanying article was about as most of the magazine had been destroyed by the rainstorm and subsequent flooding of our Hardened Aircraft Shelter [HAD]. Never thought I’d have to deal with a monsoon in the desert. The photo is of Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mother waving to a crowd during the royal tour of New Zealand and Australia in 1958. Of course, they’re standing in the back of a Royal Series II. The photo caption reads, “‘I see no point at all in being poor,’” the late Queen Mother is supposed to have said.” I thank you for your time and a great magazine. Paul Thornburg, Sgt LSA Anaconda, Iraq Austin, TX [Yes, Sir, I find that caption very funny, too, Sir! Enjoy your return to Texas –ed] Dear Editor, I am the proud owner of a 2003 Discovery II who has unfortunately been kept apart from it while assigned in Korea for the past three years (My Disco has been lovingly maintained by my retired Air Force colonel father-in-law in the dry desert of New Mexico). A happy reunion will occur upon my final return to the US on 11 July, coupled with a long reacquaintance drive across the country. As a homecoming gift for me, I have purchased a new Brownchurch roof rack from Rovers North – just to make sure I can get my family and all our stuff back East to our next duty station in Rhode Island. Paul Duray, Jr. Lieutenant Colonel, US Army Alamogordo, NM [Sir, if you want someone to expose your Discovery to New England winters, I volunteer to drive it for you – Sir! –ed.] Thank you Rob! I run the e-commerce site of a large windsurf/surf website and wanted to send a big “Thank You” to your staff there. Not only were these parts easy to find on the site, they were 44
also the best prices around, and the gentleman I spoke with quickly on the phone to confirm that I’d ordered the right parts was VERY helpful. As a first time owner of a 1990 Range Rover Classic, I look forward to doing much more business with Rovers North down the road. Thanks again, Greg Pearson Newport, RI [The Range Rover is an extraordinary engineering marvel in its first iteration of 1970 – 1996]. You have one of the early-to-theUS Range Rovers, the one that a lot of enthusiasts covet! Thanks to Land Rover Genuine Parts, you’ll be able to keep it in great condition for a long time. We appreciate your professional compliments on our web site, too –ed.] Dear Mark, Another Land Rover magazine just arrived yesterday. It is not the magazine I was hoping for. Alas, the stories are all about the new generation of Land Rover owners. The market dictates what people are looking for, so now a trip to the mall is more in demand that a trip over the mountains…. I would agree with John Robison’s lament, “where have all the simple, rugged Land Rovers gone?” It would appear that their owners are finding their way to Rovers North. They, like me, want to keep “the old guard” on duty. Thanks to you and your staff for being there when we need you. Leighton Ogg Houston, TX [At Rovers North we adore and support all Land Rover models. Over the decades we’ve noticed that the market is abetted by government regulations that mandate against “simple cars.” Fortunately, Land Rover continues to make them “rugged.” –ed] Dear Rovers North, We are still immensely enjoying our 1973 NAS Series III with about 21,000 miles (which resides in Manchester, VT), thanks to the help of Rovers North. I really love the magazine and particularly Jeff’s musings on Land Rover
ownership. Sadly, Julie and I can’t make it to the British Invasion for the second year in a row thanks to school starting for our 6 year old. We always enjoy chatting with Jeff there and the camaraderie of other British vehicle enthusiasts – Land Rover owners in particular. Kurt Krauss Newark, NJ [We missed you and your handsome Series III at this year’s event. Next year, let your son play hooky from school –we’ll provide him with a note. Glad you enjoy the magazine –ed]. Hello, I hope you are all enjoying a grand summer – been a lot of fun over here across Lake Champlain from you. Though to be honest I’ve spent far more time indoors at my desk than I’d like. That said, I’ve put in my fair share of Rovering to get to out-of-the-way places to enjoy the good weather here in the Adirondacks. Paul Hai Roosevelt Wildlife Station Newcomb, NY [Couldn’t you just claim that driving your Land Rover through the Adirondacks counts as “work?” You could search out wildlife as you drive –ed.] Dear Editor, I’m a long time Land Rover owner, going back to my 1970 Series II-A with the spare tire on the bonnet. I sold it in 1994 when I moved to Palm Beach – had to for creature comfort. My current Discovery Series I has 122,500 miles. The only repair I’ve made so far is to install a new fuel pump back in 2000. I can’t wait for more to happen as I love ordering parts from Rovers North. Now I’m sure the Lord will get me for being so “cocky.” I have exciting news. I intend to be the first Discovery owner to mount a spare tire on the hood – what a sight that will be! It’s being done at this writing. It shows how much I miss my II-A. Richard Gerhardt North Palm Beach, FL [You might want to take the hood support
bar off your II-A to help the springs on the Discovery’s hood once you mount that spare tire. It will look quite impressive –ed.] Hi Guys, Here’s a photo of my semi-finished project, a 300 Tdi Hi-Cap Pickup. It took 3 years and many phone calls and parts from Rovers North. Thanks! Bob Wisner [Congratulations on a stunning Land Rover! We’re delighted to work with you and hope you’ll visit us in person some day so we can see your Rover –ed]. Hi Rovers North, I took these pictures in Ngorongoro Crater in northern Tanzania last June. The well worn Defender Safari Land Rover was driven into a small ditch. It was finally removed by stacking up both spare wheels in the ditch, jacking it up and driving it back onto the road. We (me and Louie Breytenbach, the really big Afrikaner in the photo) were in another Land Rover when we came upon the stuck one. Hope you like them. Greg Warchol Univeristy of New Mexico [Those are recovery techniques I have used when, ahem, I have found myself stuck in a ditch. –ed] Dear Rovers North, Here are a few photos of a trip we just took across Alaska in our ’62 109” Dormobile. We did a lot of fishing and had a great time. We would love to see our Rover in your magazine. Thanks, Clint, Barb, Keegan and Kelley Ragan Northstar, AK [We also love to see your Dormobile in our magazine and we hope you’ll share more photos with us in the future –ed.] Sir, I recently purchased a Brentwood Home Video “Mutual of Omaha Wild Kingdom: The African Wild” 10 episode, 3 DVD set. There is an open cab, short wheelbase bronze green Series II with an interesting looking (read – funny) roll cage used in a zebra/giraffe cap-
ture segment in Rhodesia, and a light blue, long wheelbase, also open cab, Series II used in an elephant capture segment in the Republic of South Africa. I mention this as many US Land Rover fans’ first encounter with these mythical vehicles was via these early Wild Kingdom episodes, and folks may want to check these DVDs out to see historic rugged Land Rovers used in a seemingly appropriate and beautiful setting. Thanks for a wonderful magazine that keeps improving. Keep up the good work, Rovers North! Dr. Lee Smith Hastings, NE [You’re absolutely right. For many Americans their first sightings of a Land Rover were through these television programs. We’re delighted that you enjoy the magazine; we’re always looking to upgrade it every issue –ed.] Dear Rovers North, This Series Rover looks like it’s used up its nine lives and was finally retired from the road, but not from productive service. Looks like a great way to extend the usefulness of any ol’ Rover (instead of the scrap heap). It’s located in the Tivoli Amusement Park in Copenhagen, Denmark. Thanks for being such a great supplier of parts and advice! Ken Porter Amherst, MA [We love the photo. Thanks for being such a great customer and enthusiast –ed.] Hi Guys, My bro and I were up past the Arctic drainage of Canada last summer and came across an old Rover. It was in rather sad shape but was complete except for the gearboxes. We were about 8 days out on a 9 day canoe trip when we discovered it. What caught our attention was the corner of a roof through the trees. The Rover was behind the cabin, which in turn was on an island in a long lake. I’m sure the Rover was driven over the ice which was probably its principal use, as the island was very small, maybe 10 acres at the most. I think the foot pedals were also out of the floor rather than hanging. Will Moffitt Anacortes, WA
[Pedals moving through the floor would mean it’s a Series I. What a remarkable find! If you can send some photos, please do so –ed.] Dear Rovers North, To my surprise while on Cape Cod I came across two rare 1997 Special Edition Defenders of which there were only 300 for the US market – all decked out in Khaki and White. I did not go there in my Defender, but took the Discovery instead. It was a pleasure to see two of the Special Edition Defenders and a lot of other Land Rovers there. The owner of one of the Defenders will be up to see you – he’s heading up to Maine and then Vermont. Wayne Bishop Ste-Anne-des-Lacs Quebec, CANADA [Land Rover has always been small enough to create small runs of special models of their vehicles. The Defender 90 Station Wagons will always be special, too –ed.] Hi Guys, I once belonged to the Bay State Rover Owners Association in Massachusetts and did a bit of off-roading with a Discovery I in your neck of the woods (MA, VT, ME). In fact, I was in one of your publications with a picture and caption that read “the recovery of a Discovery in action.” I have since moved to the Florida Keys. I was at the Palomino event that was written up in your Spring issue. It’s ironic that I camped in New England from May through October every year and never had to wear so much winter clothing until we attended this event in Florida. I want to thank you for you technical advice over the years and I always look forward to your next publication. Getting There is Half the Fun
Vacationing in a P38A Story & Photos by Colin Hughes
[Colin Hughes, lives in Cannington, Ontario with his wife, Gaetane, and daughter Nadine. An avid Land Rover fan he’s owned two Range Rover Classics and a Discovery Series I. The Land Rovers help get the family out into the woods where they enjoy mountain biking, canoeing, hiking and camping –ed.]
My 1995 Discovery had 435,000 kms on the clock, and was going to start to need more work than could be recovered if I were to sell it. As an enthusiast I’ve always had a soft spot for the P38 Range Rover and took every opportunity that presented itself to drive one. Thus the search began. With the cost to buy a Range Rover P38A dropping to reasonable levels, does it make sense to purchase one as a daily driver? Would it be reliable on our family camping trips?

First Nigh of camping
Checking websites I found a 1997 Range Rover 4.0 with 197,000 kilometers on the clock. High mileage for some but based on my previous Discovery, this truck was just getting broken in. The 4.0 was my preferred choice as the 4.6 engines tend to be more prone to overheating and head gasket problems. There is some debate as to whether one should go with the Gems or Bosch engine system; all I can say is, buy the newest model you can afford but make sure you’ve kept a bit of money back for any problems that might rear their heads. The truck I found was Oxford Blue, one of my favorite P38 colours, and the only issue that the dealer was aware of was the fact the truck could not be locked. I made arrangements to view and testdrive the Range Rover. It seemed to drive well, it had almost new
Michelin tires, a CD player that worked and no visible oil or coolant leaks. The interior was near mint with the optional full wood treatment on the console and dash and except for a small area of paint fade on the hood, the body was in great shape too. Be aware, Discovery owners - the acceleration of a 4.0 Discovery and a 4.0 Range Rover are two different things. The Discovery is like a Porsche compared to the Range Rover. But the Range Rover is built for comfort. I was definitely interested in the truck. I just wanted a garage to look it over and to discover what the cause of the locking problem was. Some research by both the seller and I, including a couple of inspections brought the conclusion that we were looking at a drivers door latch. A friend at the factory in the UK ran the VIN and advised 47
that according to Land Rover records, the truck had been quite reliable. He even sent me the dispatch report showing the Range Rover was built on December 23, 2006 and shipped to Canada on January 7, 2007. A price was agreed upon and in early December I became a P38 owner. The first week-end with the truck passed uneventfully as I started to familiarize myself with the new family addition. But on Monday morning the honeymoon came to an end. Driving to work, the EAS warning light appeared on the dash. I hit the height lock button and continued on my way. I called my friend Gilles at Discotech in Brampton to tell him what had happened. He suggested I head over to his shop after work but carpooling commitments meant I couldn’t do that and sure enough, fifteen minutes from home the warning started flashing again, the Range Rover dropped to the bump stops and the “Slow to 55 kph” message appeared. Gilles brought his Autologic over to my home that night and reset the system. It turned out to be the pressure switch but while we were test driving the truck, he discovered a coolant leak in the passenger footwell. I knew about heater core and o-ring problems with the P38 but had totally missed checking it as I had concentrated on overheating and door locking issues. Don’t make my mistake, check this area carefully. The following day we discovered that not only was the door latch toast, the handle was broken as well. Parts were ordered and a further inspection of the Range Rover revealed that the rear air bags were going to need replacing within a few months. The rear brake pads installed for the safety were crap and squealed constantly; replacement was required. Lastly, one fog light had been kicked in and needed to be replaced. Add to this the heater core leak and there were a few things I needed to get rectified. Plus, when we finally got the latch and handle replaced, we discovered the passenger side door latch was toast as well. Anyway, the Range Rover went into Gilles’ shop over Christmas and was returned to me in top condition. I didn’t need a heater core, just the o-rings – lots of labour for a pair of three dollar parts. With all the issues resolved, I could start enjoying the truck. So after a long Canadian winter, when summer rolled around we decided to take the Range Rover and our new puppy, Tasha (rescued from a snowbank in the Arctic), on a vacation. The plan was simple; find a quiet spot where we could camp (with our new rooftop tent),
Day two and three camp

hike, canoe and enjoy the outdoors. After doing some research, we decided to head north and explore the Forgotten Trails. The Forgotten Trails are a series of trails hidden among logging roads, just northeast of South River and on the outskirts of the north-west corner of Algonquin Park, about three hours north of Toronto. We hit the road early on Monday morning and made a detour at Huntsville to grab some breakfast at the Coffee Cabin. They have an excellent menu and great coffee. At South River, we stopped to say hello to Tim Hainsworth, the proprietor of the Algonquin Motel, who had been kind enough to recommend a good camping spot in the woods. Their website www.algonquinmotel.ca is an excellent resource for information on the area. Following Tim’s suggestion, we headed out of town on Chemical Road towards our destination for the day. Chemical Road is the main access road for canoeists heading into Algonquin Park and starts out paved but changes to broken pavement, hard packed gravel and loose gravel the further you head in. We turned off onto a logging road about twenty kilometers in and followed it for about two kilometers, ever watchful for the logging trucks the multiple signs warn you about. It was here we turned off onto the Tower Trail. At just over two kilometers, our plan was to drive in about a kilometer and a half to a clearing where we would set up camp. At the first turn in the trail, we came across a tree blocking our path. The trusty saw made short work of this obstacle and we were back on our way. As we approached our first forty degree incline on loose stone, I dropped the P38 into low range and it crawled up with no problem at all. However, the trail had not been cut back for quite awhile and the trees crept in closer and closer on each side. The sound of branches scraping along the side of truck grew louder and louder as it became officially christened to off-road adventure. We emerged into a clearing and parked the Range Rover. We spent the next hour hiking to the top of the trail where we were rewarded with a mountaintop view where we could see twenty miles into the distance. Back at the clearing we explored another side trail which took us down to a small lake and we spent a couple of hours just relaxing in the solitude. Even Tasha, after hiking for the first time, passed out by the water. This spot was just perfect and I don’t think there was another person around for at least ten miles. After dinner I got the tent up and ready for its’ first night with two people and a dog. Our roof top tent is made by Autohome www.autohomecanada.com – and is the Columbus Variant model. It takes about ten seconds to open as it has one latch and a pair of struts which open much like a car hood. In addition, the entire rear of the tent (higher end) can be left with screen only on nice evenings. As it was a beautiful night we did this and had the opportunity to enjoy a full view of the stars. It was like a sleepover for Tasha and we constantly got a paw in the head over the course of the evening but she was tired and she did sleep! After a leisurely start to Tuesday, we made our way back down the Tower Trail, adding to the acquired war wounds received on the way in the previous day. Our plan today was to hike the 8.5 kilometer Loxton Beaver Trail. We soon discovered why they are called the Forgotten Trails. They seen to be rarely used, which is a shame, but
they are also poorly marked for hikers. We kept hoping we were taking the right forks in the trail but one turn was definitely the wrong way when we emerged back on the access road after hiking about six kilometers. As both the day and the pavement were extremely hot, I left Gaetane and Tasha in a shady spot along the side of the road and made the two and a half kilometer hike back to the Range Rover. As we planned to rent a canoe the next day, we headed towards Northern Wilderness Oufitters to see about making a reservation. Bill MacFarlane and his family have been running their little piece of paradise for almost forty years. Not only do they offer complete outfitting packages, but they have a chalet where canoeists can camp out before and after their trips. Their three large dogs met us as we emerged from the Range Rover and Tasha, who hadn’t had much exposure to dogs yet, had her hair raised and was barking a warning to these fellows. However, within a couple of hours, she was loose and running and playing with them. NWO have a semi-secluded campsite area where we choose to spend night number two. We were the only ones here so we had no complaints. After getting the truck onto a level area and our kitchen setup, we took advantage of the lake and had a very relaxing swim. A little coaxing and Tasha went for a swim for the first time. Wednesday, Tasha and I were up early and watched the day appear over the lake. It was very peaceful and quiet. Bill appeared and offered me a coffee from his parent’s cabin. This was very welcome and I enjoyed most of it until Tasha decided to start running with the boys and spilt what was left on my sweatpants. Around eleven we headed out in the canoe to explore Kawawaymog Lake. We even paddled a bit of the way up the river which allows access to Algonquin Park. There were wild roses growing along both sides of the river and their fragrance filled the air. We found a small sandy beach to stop for a bite of lunch and we all enjoyed another swim. We decided to stay put for the night as it was a quiet and secluded spot and spend the rest of the afternoon planning what we would do Thursday. Having picked up the 2007 Algonquin Park guide at NWO, we discovered there were a couple of really good art exhibits at the art gallery on Highway 60 in the park. As there was only a couple of small trails left to hike where we were, we decided to head into Algonquin Park and take a chance finding a campsite. Getting out of our camping area Thursday morning was a bit of a challenge as a couple of trucks had parked in front of the access in and I was forced to crawl over a few fallen trees down a steep incline to get back to the road. Of course, we had to hit the Coffee Cabin in Huntsville for a bite of lunch and another cup of their excellent coffee on route. It seemed arriving at midweek for one night was not a problem and we soon had a nice spot in the Canisbay campground. We took in the art exhibits featuring original paintings of wolves by some of North America’s best artists and hiked another trail where we had seen moose on a previous trip. We spent the evening sitting around the campfire and keeping an eye on Tasha, who seemed to have developed a bit of heatstroke. She was sick a couple of times during the night, fun when you are sleeping in a tent on top of a Range Rover, but was her old self again in the morning. We decided Friday morning that we would head home and not
hike any further trails in case Tasha had a relapse. We stopped at Algonquin Outfitters on the way home and had her fitted for a lifejacket. This was pretty comical as she had to parade around the store and show it to everyone. It was a great holiday and we did what we had planned to do, relax. We also had the opportunity to get comfortable with the roof tent which gave us peace of mind. The dry summer season has meant slim pickings for wildlife, such as bears, and being up high in the middle of nowhere allowed us to sleep without worry. The Range Rover behaved as it should as well. Our one concern was the air suspension system but it worked flawlessly all week. With over three hundred pounds rolling around the top of the truck every night, it was down close to its bump stops every morning but pumped up just fine, even with all our extra gear in the back. I was carrying a spare EAS ECU and had the MARS system installed just in case but did not need them. We traveled in the finest of 4x4 vehicles and it did not disappoint. We all look forward to more adventures in our P38A Range Rover in the future. It’s now been over eight months. How am I enjoying it? It does have its’ quirks but it is a Land Rover. All of this is outweighed by the ride this Range Rover offers. The truck feels very solid on the road, even more so than my Discovery. All the invisible tools like traction control work to perfection and driving through snow is a breeze. The P38 is a complicated feat of engineering and unfortunately, the things that can go wrong can either just annoy you or truly strand you. Find one that’s been well-maintained and you won’t be disappointed. After all, it’s a Range Rover! _______ ! ________

It will also showcase the new 'mini' terrapod – a man-made off-road structure - designed to showcase the capability of our vehicles - which festival goers can drive in the new Freelander 2. Double Olympic gold medal winning rower, self-confessed surfing fanatic and Discovery 3 owner, James Cracknell is the face of Land Rover's association with Rip Curl Boardmasters 2007 and will attend the Festival to host Land Rover competition winners. "We are delighted to be involved with the Rip Curl Boardmasters Festival this year and to be able to support its smooth running with a fleet of Freelander 2s," Andy Griffiths, Land Rover's UK marketing director commented. "The Freelander 2 is the ultimate leisure 4x4 and the perfect vehicle for anyone with a passion for adventure. And outdoor entertainment doesn't come more adventurous than the Rip Curl Boardmasters 2007." The event, now in its 26th year, encompasses the whole town of Newquay and attracts over 220,000 visitors each year. It is the first event in the European leg of the gruelling World Qualifying Series circuit and also features the Vans Summer Session – the biggest vert skate competition in the UK, and 'Unleashed' – the festival's music event which will be headlined by Ash, Paolo Nutini and the Guillemots. LAND ROVER ANNOUNCES FIRST PROJECTS IN ITS CO2 OFFSET PROGRAMME Geneva, 6 March 2007 - Land Rover today announced the first projects in its industry leading CO2 Offset Programme, which enables both Land Rover and its customers to reduce greenhouse gases. It is the largest and most comprehensive programme of its kind ever undertaken by an automotive manufacturer and offsets emissions generated by Land Rover production operations in Britain and the first 45,000 miles vehicle use by UK customers. The ultimate goal is CO2 neutrality with investments being made in renewable energy projects such as wind and solar, technology change and energy efficiency. The first projects will include providing hydro-electric power to a remote area of Tajikistan and funding a wind farm in China. Together these projects will offset 150,000 tonnes of CO2 a year and bring social and environmental benefits to thousands of people. In addition, we are evaluating projects in Uganda, India, Turkey and the Dominican Republic. Details of these projects will be available once they are confirmed. Phil Popham, Land Rover's Managing Director, said, "We're taking an integrated approach to help reduce the amount of CO2 in the
atmosphere. We've cut emissions from our vehicles and are working on technologies, like hybrids, that will make even bigger reductions. These offset schemes will make a difference now and will be of real benefit to communities, the environment and wildlife." Projects Tajikistan - Installation of two hydro electricity generators supplied by naturally formed lake. After the Soviet era diesel supplies to the region became intermittent. For the past 15 years residents of the city of Khorog have suffered intermittent power supplies. This project brings a reliable source of power and light to the region. Customers in the city are now able to keep warm and cook without wood fuel for the first time in many years during which 70% of the region's trees have been cut for firewood. In addition schools and the local hospital will have a reliable energy supply. This project will offset 50,000 tonnes of CO2 a year. China - Wind Energy Hebei Province (250 km north of Beijing) China is reputed to be commissioning a new coal fired power station every five days as the economy expands. Hebei province is one of the windiest in China and the project offsets nearly 100,000 tonnes of CO2 a year. Land Rover's Carbon Dioxide Offset Programme The CO2 Offset Programme has been established specifically for Land Rover and supports a multi-billion euro investment by Ford Motor Company across its European operations to develop environmental technologies. Land Rover engineers are at the forefront of that development work. The CO2 Offset Programme is run by Climate Care and overseen by an independent Board of Governance. Other offset schemes will be announced in due course. Customers of all new Land Rover vehicles sold in the UK pay to offset the CO2 emissions produced by their vehicle, calculated on the certified CO2 emissions level for each Land Rover model up to 45,000 miles, typically three years use. The cost is from £85 to £165 depending on model. New Land Rover vehicles all have lower emissions than predecessors in their model range. The all-new Freelander 2, for instance, has 11% less CO2 emissions in petrol form and the diesel version emits 5% less than the outgoing Freelander. The combined fuel cycle for Freelander 2 TD4 manual is 37.7 mpg (7.51 l/100km). The new Range Rover TDV8 has performance figures to match the V8 petrol model but has 32% better fuel economy. Emissions from Solihull have been cut by 30% since 1997. The overall UK fleet average for Land Rover is 32 mpg (8.8 l/100km). LAND ROVER STRENGTHENS DESIGN TEAM Gaydon, Warwickshire 5 July, 2007 -- Land Rover is strengthening its design team with the appointment of Phil Simmons as the company’s first-ever studio director responsible specifically for the iconic Range Rover. Simmons, currently Chief Designer at Ford of Europe, joins the Land Rover design team on 1 August and he will be responsible for future design direction of all Range Rover products.
Land Rover's Design Director, Gerry McGovern, said: "This new position will help Land Rover to achieve even higher levels of creativity and design leadership for this iconic model and to meet the challenges and opportunities of the luxury automotive market." Simmons spent the first 10 years of his career at Land Rover, culminating in exterior design of the current (third) generation Range Rover. He subsequently moved to Ford Motor Company in the US, where he was responsible for Ford's family of medium size vehicles such as the Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln MKZ. He was appointed Chief Designer for Ford of Europe in September 1999. Simmons' focus on the Range Rover allows Dave Saddington, currently Land Rover Design's studio director, to assume overall responsibility for future design of all other Land Rover vehicles. Both Simmons and Saddington report to Gerry McGovern. "With this move we'll also be strengthening the design of future Land Rover models," said McGovern. "Though Land Rover and Range Rover are part of the same family, they have subtly different values that must be reflected in their designs and by separating the two studio director jobs we are underlining the importance and distinctiveness of both nameplates." Julian Thomson will continue as studio director for Jaguar and Land Rover Advanced Design, reporting jointly to McGovern and Jaguar Design Director Ian Callum. He is responsible for advanced design work on all Jaguar and Land Rover brand vehicles. Adriana Monk, former Chief Designer for Jaguar and Land Rover Advanced Design interiors, becomes Chief Designer, Land Rover Interior Design. "Overall these changes strengthen the whole design team," said McGovern. "Our Land Rover and Range Rover design is internationally celebrated and admired. I’m confident that our future vehicles will be even more trend setting, desirable and distinctive." _______ ! ________

BRITISH INVASION XVII Story by: Mike Koch Photos by: Matt Martin
It seemed all too familiar. At 5:45am, my alarm clock interrupted a great dream. Fumbling around my nightstand for my eyeglasses, I reluctantly rested them on my nose only to focus on the steady rain outside my bedroom windowing. Brilliant. Being the morning of British Invasion, it crossed my mind that this was some sort of payback for an episode of deferred maintenance on my 109 that the gods of vintage British cars were inflicting upon me. 54
They do have an odd sense of humour. My 109” and I had an enjoyable trip out to Westford, from Burlington (about a 15-mile drive, a commute for me five days/week), seeing as there was no commuter traffic to contend with and the fact that we were driving through “some fine English weather.” As I made my way through the rainy morning, I was thankful that had I applied a veritable coat of Rain X the day before, as my wipers were “on the blink” yet again. Amusingly enough, in a way only a British car enthusiast could appreciate, it was this weekend last year that they started acting up...and haven’t really ever stopped since! It was a damp, genuinely clammy morning and the meteorologists were forecasting rain all day. Resourcefully, I was appropriately dressed for the weather but the interior of my military 109”, with its ill-fitting aged canvas top, never let me forget the conditions outside. This was all a little too similar to the misty, damp Saturday morning of last year’s British Invasion in Stowe, VT. One good thing is that my 109” has been running a lot better than one year ago, when it could still be labeled a “recent acquisition.” I met my co-workers Art Limacher, Les Parker, and Rob Smith to convoy to Stowe in my 1978 military 109”, joining Les’ 1979 Air Portable. Our camouflaged convoy made our way out of Westford, through Cambridge and Jeffersonville, and over the ‘Notch’ to Stowe, where we stopped for breakfast sandwiches and coffee. Up to this point, this was the highlight of our morning. After arriving at the decidedly waterlogged event site, I unloaded a collection of Land Rover parts from my 109” and backed it into its slip in the Rovers North display. Between my Land Rover and the droves of British sports cars pulling into the Invasion, the smell of rich uncatalyzed exhaust filled the air, choking us out. Once we had our display tent up and running, the Rovers North British Invasion Team took turns manning our vendor tent and walking the show, greeting both customers and fellow enthusiasts. In this case, “walking the show” meant wading through ankle deep mud and water more often than not. Thankfully, my LL Bean Gortex Thinsulate boots were keeping my feet both warm and dry. The rainfall would wax and wane throughout the day, in an almost uncanny correspondence to the size of the crowds under our tent! There were rows upon rows of British sports cars in attendance, but not nearly as many Land Rovers as I would’ve liked. Having attending the show for some years now, it was refreshing to see several notably unique cars that we hadn’t seen there before. At the same time, it was somewhat disappointing to see the same familiar Land Rovers, rather than some new faces as we would’ve liked. The weather was ideal for Land Rovers and perfect for towing mired MGs, Jaguars, Triumphs, and so forth out of the mud while using the aforementioned Land Rovers. I’m putting out a call to fellow Land Rover enthusiasts to enjoy a weekend in the good company of Rovers North and the kind folks who sponsor the British Invasion for 2008! Let’s hope for some drier weather and more vibrant foliage next year. Perhaps by then, I’ll stop using such colorful language with regards to the weather at the 2007 British Invasion. _______ ! ________ 55
Test Driving a 2007 Defender Story & photos by Les Parker
[Les Parker, S. Burlington, VT, is an ex-pat Land Rover enthusiast who’s been a familiar voice at Rovers North for several years. He recently returned to England to cadge a ride –ed.] In August, my wife Annie and I went over to the UK primarily for our youngest daughter Laura’s wedding. After a very fraught exit from Burlington, Vermont we headed to Manchester, England, via JFK airport. A bright and sunny day greeted us on our arrival in the UK. This was a stark contrast to the previous month of rain experienced by most of England, which caused widespread flooding. Fortunately, the region we were visiting (Lincoln- Louth area) was, for the most part, spared the devastation that a lot of the “folks back home” had endured.
56
It was whilst in the Lincoln area that an opportunity cropped up to visit the local Land Rover dealer, and past employer, Duckworth Land Rover. They have been a Land Rover dealer since 1981 and a Land Rover specialist for many years prior to that. On a nice day, Annie and I journeyed the 18 miles or so, north of Lincoln to visit Benjamin Duckworth and all the good folks at the Racecourse Garage in Market Rasen, Lincolnshire. I asked, as I was there anyway, about the possibility of “borrowing” a 2007 Defender to evaluate for all the envious people in my adopted country, who would love to see and drive a diesel-powered Land Rover product. Annie and I, after cracking the code of using a “plip” to open the doors, on a panel sided Defender, no less (who would have thought to do that?), hopped in the Service Manager’s company vehicle and drove off for a test drive. Well! I am used to my 1997 4.0, manual change, Discovery I, and was very nicely surprised by the zip that the Defender showed. Especially, as I sped from the 30 mph zone of Willingham Road towards Willingham Woods, a nice rest spot for folks driving from
Sheffield/Doncaster to the fabled coastal town of Lincolnshire, yes that’s the place, bracing Skegness. The sheer force and pick-up of the “Tranny” [Ford Transitbased diesel] engine is remarkable, to say the least. It was very smooth in shifting through all the gears, whizzing past 20, 30, 40 mph. Whoa!! 60 mph and still two more gears to go! The winding Lincolnshire roads certainly lend themselves to swift up shifting and down shifting. The 6-speed Getrag gearbox was a veritable delight, very smooth in the transitions up to 5th and down to 3rd, as we weaved our way around the not-so-often driven roads of the Wolds of Lincoln. If the opportunity ever comes up to “have a go” in one of the Defender variants, either 90 “panel van.” County station wagon, 110 or 130, do not pass it up!! You’ll be missing a sure-fire treat. Enough about the performance - what about the interior, I hear you ask? The interior of the “test” vehicle was very spartan; it was, after all, destined for a local farmer to go to market with his/her livestock. The seats, albeit being slightly more inboard than standard, were new and thus more comfortable than Defenders I have driven in the USA. As for the dashboard, well I guess you could get used to it. Though I found the controls to be clumsy, they were no more so than those on my 97 Discovery. I found there to be some similarities when you look closely at the controls. Under the bonnet, all looked accessible. A definite enhancement after looking under a TD5 bonnet, where it takes a minute or two to
see where the oil goes, or the location of the air cleaner access. The undercarriage was very tidy, no odd bits hanging that shouldn’t have been, and the exhaust looked well tucked away in the chassis. I’ve been asked if the “bulge” obscured the forward vision. My opinion, based on my height of 5’ 8”, is the view was no different out of the windscreen, though the trees looked closer together during our test drive!! Would I buy one? If I could afford to have one stood in my yard, yes I would. The chance of one being in South Burlington, VT in the near future is somewhat slim though. Goodness, I almost forgot! Yes, the wedding was lovely. _______ ! ________

BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL By Jeffrey B. Aronson
There are two famous sites in Kennebunkport, ME. One is the summer waterfront home of the Bush family; the second is the home of Leyland British Auto Repair. Recently I made the 3 hour drive to Kennebunkport and passed by the former to visit the latter. Erik Van Sickle has been restoring, repairing and maintaining British cars in his barn for decades. The shop always has an air of autojumble about it, but Erik knows where everything is located. He’s quite knowledgeable, highly skilled and reasonably priced. At least I thought so, until I saw the Range Rover Classic in his drive. The decal across the rear window proudly announced his shop’s name. I walked around the gold colored four-door Range Rover. How could he afford a Range Rover? What would happen to the 58
“reasonable prices?” Apparently nothing, for he bought the 100,000 mile Range Rover for $500 from a customer. It had some cosmetic rust and some wear of the upholstery and carpeting, but ran quite well. It needed nothing for daily use. The only annoyance was a buzzer trying to tell him something; a call to Rovers North uncovered that it was a warning buzzer alerting him to a poor engagement into high range at the transfer case. It took some wrestling to manhandle the never-used transfer case into low range, and then back to high range, but we did it and took care of the sound. That’s it - $500 and he has a Range Rover that he, his wife and daughters love to drive. My most recent $500 purchase was a 1966 Corvair Monza Coupe. Unlike the $500 Range Rover it ran like a $500 car. Neither carburetor agreed with the other and the four-speed gearbox couldn’t seem to find any gear quickly. It smoked like a crop sprayer and knocked like a mad drummer. And the directional lever fell off in my hand. It took me hours of labor and $150 in parts to make it run. To get his Range Rover to run well it cost Erik a tank of gas. Land Rover sent plenty of Range Rover Classics and Discovery Series Is to North America in the 80’s and 90’s, which means that there are plenty of entry-level priced Land Rovers out there. The Land Rover Classic Parts program, distributed through Rovers North, means that virtually anything you need to repair, restore or upgrade the Rover will be available. I’m still searching; if Erik can get lucky, so can I. _______ ! ________
Elsewhere in this issue Mike Koch writes of attending the very wet British Invasion event in Stowe, VT, last September. This year I resolved to return to the good graces of my Triumph TR-7 friends and attend in my ’80 Spider. The wet weather kept most of them
away and made my Land Rover acquaintances wonder “where’s Jeff?” To Land Rover enthusiasts, you’re invisible if you don’t show up in a Rover. So I stared at the 400+ sports cars, saloons and Rovers in attendance and wandered through the muddy field – I should have brought the Rover! Missing my II-A I looked to see what would help me feel less lonesome. At the Rovers North booth I found a used early II-A facia panel with all the switchs, buttons and instruments. Calef Letorney somehow convinced me to purchase the Rovers North Magic Clay cleaning system kit. A Hi-Lift jack base looked essential to me, too. Then I wandered into the huge vendor tent with a river running through the middle aisle. High and dry on one side was Liverpool Motor Works (LiverpoolMotorWorks.com), a PA company specializing in British car literature and paraphernalia. Neatly stacked in one pile was a 1974 British Leyland Land Rover Optional Equipment Parts Catalogue. Never mind that I don’t own a Series III – how could I do without this? Or the 1961 Rover Company Series II 2.25 Litre Diesel Engine Workshop Manual Supplement for the diesel I don’t own? Or the 1970 Land Rover Range Rover Options and Special Equipment dealer book (in English and German) for the sprayer and welder I don’t own? Or the mid 80’s Range Rover US dealer brochure that pictures twodoor Range Rovers never imported here [no Range Rover, either]? Wisely, I did purchase a Series II-A Optional Equipment for Land Rover booklet as I have two II-A’s. I managed to stammer “no” when presented with an original Series II tool roll [with tools] for a few hundred bucks. Later, when I confessed my financial lassitude with Mark Letorney, he let me know he had also looked at the tool roll and the books. That’s why they were piled up so conveniently! _______ ! ________
The weather has seemed weird this fall. It’s been t-shirt weather one day then near freezing that night, then damp and chilly for days on end. Photographers and artists will insist that colors really change under varying intensities of daylight. On a recent drizzly, morning, I sat beside my woodstove imbibing coffee and waiting for the burning wood to actually produce heat. I looked out the window at the QE I, my ’66 Series II-A. Against the autumn green of the wet grass, its Sage Green color seemed almost iridescent against the morning gloom. Considering that I last washed the car for the July 4th parade, it couldn’t be the paint finish alone. I focused on the fantastic lines created by David Bache in 1959 when he rounded off the edges of the Series I Rover to update the 10-year old design. Those barrel rolls on the front wings, doors and body tub look subtle now but they transformed the Land Rover into a style icon. Over the decades Land Rover has been a niche product in the US sales market. Since the 1950’s, each British pound has been worth $1.80 - $2.00. My 1966 Corvair, with accessories like a pushbutton AM radio, the 4-speed transmission, the 110 hp motor and floor mats, cost $2,275. A 1966 Series II-A station wagon listed at nearly $3,500, and that was “east of the Mississippi.” For that you got 77 horsepower, seats for 7, two windshield wipers and floor mats. With average incomes below $10,000 per year, that price differential mattered to consumers. Rover accessories included “extra heavy duty springs and shocks, center power take off, tropical roof and flyscreens, reinforced front axle casing, manual engine speed control and spare wheel carrier on the hood.” Explorers, estate owners, farmers, and adventurers applauded. Corvair accessories included air conditioning [causing respiratory distress requiring tissues], a “deluxe swing-out mounted tissue dispenser” [three different styles], a litter container [for the used tissues, no doubt], radios [one with FM stereo sound!], a spare tire lock, and chillingly, a fire extinguisher. Suburban buyers were enthralled. Land Rover had few color choices for its
customers, an export problem shared with other British manufacturers. Wartime austerity did not fully release its grip on Great Britain until the early 1960’s, and automobile manufacturers had little extra room in their factories for additional paint booths. You could have your Land Rover in any color as long as it was a whiter shade of pale – sand, green or blue. Red was available for export markets only [like North America and Africa], and white or bronze green [the common color for all Series I’s] seemed destined for specialty vehicles only. In Great Britain, other exciting colors like soft grey and light white were available. No wonder US distributors and later, Rover North America executives, begged for more choices. Even the Corvair – the car General Motors sought to kill off – came in 15 different colors. What separated Land Rover was, of course, its remarkable engineering, design and construction, not its tissue dispensers and litter containers. The market for Land Rovers has shifted over the decades but the core values remain in place, whether you own a Series I or an LR3. Land Rovers are still in production. Tellingly, the last Corvair was made in 1969.
Trump, those days are clearly gone.Recently I replaced the worn out tires on the QE I, my ’66 Series II-A 88” SW. I challenged the local garagiste to secure me a set of B.F. Goodrich All Terrain M+S. It takes a certain steely-eyed verve to work as an auto mechanic. After all, in this day and age, you will deliver an estimate or an invoice to a customer far more likely to be in 4 figures than 3. Todd, the proprietor of “The Best Damned Garage on the Island [indeed, the only one],” is generally up to the task. However, as he gave me the quote, even he blanched for a moment. The number seemed staggering to me; in fact, the value of my II-A would jump nearly 20% when I factor in the tires! I gulped hard, dug into my savings, and bought them. They looked terrific on the car aided by an optical illusion that makes them look taller and narrower tan their dimensions would indicate. Using a hand measuring device [you can use a piece of chalk and a tape measure] and a pipe wrench, we aligned the front wheels so as to save premature wear on the new tires.

The price of gasoline flirted with the $4.00 level on this island, then “fell” to $3.45 for most of the season. To paraphrase The Three Stooges, “inch by inch, step by step,” the cost of fuel for our Land Rovers marches upward into territories once occupied only by European nations. No wonder enthusiasts scream for the 30 mpg diesel engines enjoyed by British and Rest of the World enthusiasts. I would not venture to say which component of the price of fuel – crude oil suppliers, refiners, retailers, oil giants, federal/state/local tax authorities – truly drives this year’s price increases, but it’s certainly having a ripple effect on other petroleum based products. For example, have you bought tires recently? It does not seem that long ago that tires could be secured for the cost of a day’s labor. Unless I change my name to Donald
With the Boston Red Sox in the World Series, I bought a Boston newspaper and wound up in the automotive section. Their auto writer had taken seven off road vehicles onto the Land Rover designed test course at Long Pond, PA, near Pocono Raceway. The motley collection included 4x4 pickups, a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, a Mercedes G55 AMG, and a Land Rover LR3. Saving the best for last he wrote “This is, quite simply, a monster wrapped in elegance. It features a 300-horsepower V-8, superb off road capabilities and a hill descent program that will not let it slop into a skid even on the slipperiest of slopes. Too bad so many of these cars only find their way to the Hamptons or Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket.”
Now I should be able to get another 40,000 miles on this set!

It’s A Family Affair Story & photos by Clint Ragan
[Clint Ragan was born and raised in Fairbanks, AK. He and his wife Barbara are both teachers. With their children Keegan, 12, and Kelley,8, they love the outdoors provided by their home state. Here’s what they did last summer –ed.] Where did it start? We have all heard the stories of how people get hooked on Land Rovers; for me it has been a lifelong adventure with only a few non-Rover years mixed in. When I was 7 years old my Dad purchased a then ten-year old 1966 IIA 88”. Being young, I had no idea of the impact that 88” would have on the rest of my vehicular experiences for years to come. That trusty 88” served my family for the next 20 years, shuttling my sister and I to all our activities over the years, and serving as my means of transportation though college. I ended up letting that Rover go after college, one of those decisions that we look back upon with regret. After several Rover-less years I picked up a two year old ‘95 Disco for my wife Barbara- or so I thought. That car immediately revived my Land Rover lust and the Discovery quickly became my vehicle. I spent the next five years driving and loving that Rover. Working over the years with my son Keegan, we bought every expedition goodie from Rovers North we could find. I guess that the love for a Series Rover never quite left, though. After thinking about finding a 109”, I quickly sold my Discovery and started searching. Alaska is not the best place to find a good Series Rover; there are only 5 Series driving around Fairbanks including ours (as well as two Defender 90’s). After about a year I had pretty much given up, I read the trip across Newfoundland by Colby Morris. I showed Barbara the 109” and wished I could find one as nice as his. Several months went by and I saw that he had that exact 109” for sale. Needless to say I was extremely excited, but being in Alaska creates some problems when looking at Rovers on the East Coast. Colby quickly sold his 109”, to my disappointment I was back searching for my perfect 109”. I had a stroke of luck when Colby emailed me saying that Lanny Clark, a restorer in Colchester, VT, and the creator of his 109”, had a 1962 II-A 109” Dormobile for sale. Lanny had restored it for the current owner who then decided to sell it. It had less than 1000 miles since the restoration. I was not to sure about the Dormobile at first but the more I thought about it, it was the perfect Rover for our family. Like a motor home, which my wife knows I will never own, and a Rover all in one. How could we go wrong? After over three weeks, and one extra due to the late spring blizzard in Vermont our new 109” arrived in Fairbanks, Alaska. True to his description, Lanny delivered a great clean 109” Dormoble that looked as good underneath as it did on the outside. I was immediately amazed at how clean and new the underside of the Rover looked, nothing pieced together, all neat and tidy.
After having several months to get acquainted with our new Rover we found out that my wife’s brother, Kyle and his girl friend, Lisa were coming up from Nebraska for a few weeks this summer. They wanted to make a trip to Valdez to fish for salmon, and we would also plan a two day stop at our cabin at Summit Lake in the Alaskan mountain range to fish for the ever elusive lake trout. The perfect first test for our new Dormobile! Having little time to prepare, Barb asked me what we needed to do to get the Rover ready for the trip. Mechanically the 109” was perfect but the pop-up top needed some attention before we could get started. Keegan and I quickly got to work. We disassembled the bunks, stripped the paint off and repainted the bunk assembly. We then went shopping for some new canvas for the bunks. Barb broke out the sewing machine and stitched up some excellent replacements, which were tested thoroughly by our Keegan and Kelley. The candy-striped top was a different story. The best shop in town (the Badger Coachworks of Alaska) would not be able to complete it in time. Keegan and I examined the top and assured Barb that we could fix the few small areas that had worn through over the years, making it waterproof. Valdez is known as the snow capital of Alaska with over 500 inches of snow in winter being common. So you can usually expect five out of seven days to be raining in summer. After some stitching and adhesive, a quick hose test proved that we would stay dry in Valdez. We planed to tow our boat with the 109” so several upgrades were needed. The 109” had the standard pin hitch and I had used it to tow the boat around town but felt we needed a better set-up for the 750 mile round trip from Fairbanks to Valdez. A quick call to Rovers North and two days later we had a new class three receiver hitch, a pair of mud flaps to keep the rocks from the road (Alaska is not known for the quality of the highways) from damaging the front of the boat, and a assortment of decals to spruce-up the 109. I was impressed with the quality of the hitch and with all the hardware that was included. After removing the old plate and pin hitch from the rear cross member it was a simple bolt on instillation. We had to clean off the galvanizing from the threads with a tap but that took a matter of minutes. The only addition we made was adding a pair of shackles to the mounting plate to attach safety chains. Alaska is a big state and most of the time you’re hundreds of miles from help. We wanted to be able to charge our cell phone in the Rover, even though it seems like in Alaska you don’t have service 75% of the time [sounds like northern New England –ed]. I made a mounting plate out of brushed aluminum and installed two AC adaptors in the dash. These not only were handy for charging the cell phone and Ipod but the kids were able to watch DVD’s and play their game systems along the way. With the Rover packed and the boat ready to go we met up with Kyle and Lisa, who followed us in their car. It quickly became apparent that the 2.25 in the Rover towing a boat would be too slow for Kyle and Lisa, who scooted on ahead. We were on our own driving the first 175 miles to
Summit Lake to spend the night and next day fishing on the lake. The day we left was a hot 85 degrees out and Barb quickly joked for me to turn on the AC. As I reached over and opened the vent she asked if “this thing has a outside temperature gauge.” “Sure,” I replied, and stuck my finger out the window. “About 80 degrees,” I said. The first 100 miles featured only two sightings of moose on the side of the road. The Rover was running great and cruised at 45-50 mph with the boat all day long. One thing I really noticed on this trip was that I’m not a big fan of overdrives. This is the first Rover I have had with one. Yes, the Rover will run at a bit faster and at lower rpm, but the trade-off in increased noise is not worth it. I think a R380 five -speed gear-box upgrade might be in our future. We rolled through Delta Junction (home of one of the U.S. missile defense systems) 100 miles into our trip and I was happy to see that we still had a just over half tank of fuel. We began a 3000 ft climb to Summit Lake. Just outside of Delta is a long stretch of road by a mountain named Donnelly Dome. In all the years I have driven this stretch of highway I never really noticed the altitude gain until we drove the Dormoble towing the boat. We were quickly reduced to 25 mph in 2nd gear moving slowly for the next 5 miles. The slow speed worked to our benefit when we stopped to allow a large caribou herd to cross the road. The next 60 miles or so to Summit lake are quite possibly my favorite. The 800-mile Trans Alaskan Pipeline parallels the highway and crosses it several times during this section of road. With the Dormobile running strong we made it to Summit Lake at an elevation of 3100 ft. With no more trees in sight we are greeted by our favorite place in all of Alaska. The road runs right next to the lake and there is always a family of loons each summer at the waters edge. Our cabin is set on a bluff about 200 ft. above the shore looking down on the lake. The road up to the cabin is more of an off road trail rather than a road. It starts off with an extremely steep hill for the first 1/8 mile littered with rocks and ruts and is not passable after the first few inches of snow because of the grade. (I learned this the hard way after being stuck on two separate occasions with chains in our Disco.) As we pull up to the base of the climb, Barb looks at me with the look of are we going to make it with the boat? I just looked back and said “give me a break, it’s a Rover.” I hopped out and locked the Fairey hubs with the lug wrench - way cool - dropped it into low range and started up the hill. The Dormoble crawled up without trouble. We maneuvered around the large basketball sized rocks and though the ruts to the top, I was more concerned about the boat trailer with its low axles and the big rocks than with the Rover. With all the low-end torque of low range we were able to carefully skid the boat axles over some of the large rocks. After arrival Keegan’s first comment is “should we pop the top and sleep in the Dormobile?” With some chuckles from his sister Kelley, Barb said “I think I will sleep in my bed in the cabin tonight.” Keegan a bit disappointed agreed after we assured him that he would have time to test it in Valdez. The next day was spent in somewhat ominous weather fishing on the lake; one thing we have learned over the years is in the mountains the weather can change fast. We had a great day of fishing with the family on the lake and caught two 22in lake trout, loaded up and headed off for the remaining drive to Valdez. The last obstacle on our way to Valdez was Thompson Pass, a mountain pass with an elevation gain of 2500 ft in about 3 miles. To my delight the Rover ran all the way in 3rd gear, Barb was unable to use her favorite line – “Kids, would you get out and push” – as I drove up the steep hill. Even though we live in Alaska a stop at Worthington Glacier is always fun. It runs right down to the parking lot and if you are brave you can cross the stream and go climb around on the ice. Worthington Glacier, covers an area of about five square miles, it also serves as the object of an extensive research project funded by the National Science Foundation. Worthington Glacier serves this purpose well because it is actively moving. In the warmest time of the summer it flows, on average, more than 22 feet per month. Barb and the kids look around a bit and I make my way to the
edge of the Parking lot to take some photos, looking like a real tourist. Barb and the kids make fun of me, as they know I’m not taking photos of the glacier but of the Dormobile. As we rolled over Thompson Pass we are once again reminded of how the weather changes in the mountains. At the glacier it was sunny and 75 degrees out, just over the pass it changed to rain and 55 degrees. The first night in Valdez was, of course, rainy. While everyone else went to a hotel, Keegan and I set up camp in the Dormobile. With our sleeping bags we set up in the bunks and enjoyed a dinner cooked on the propane stove in the Rover. We then tested the sink by brushing our teeth and washing up. It is really amazing the amount of room inside the 109 with the Dormoble top up, that along with the walk through 2nd row seats it creates a very livable space. Truly impressed with ourselves and the Rover we settled into the bunks, which we found to be very comfy, and watched several episodes of Star Trek on the DVD player before falling asleep. The next morning we awoke to more rain but were surprisingly dry, a quick high five with my son for our handy work in sealing up the top. We packed up used the sink one more time, stowed the top and met the girls inside to brag about our night in the Rover and eat the free breakfast. We had a blast fishing in the bay; the pink salmon were so thick they were almost jumping in the boat. We spent some time fishing for halibut, with no luck and drove over to Allison Point to the Alyeska Pipeline terminal for some fishing off the bank. The trip home was just as fun, and the Dormobile ran fantastic the whole way back to Fairbanks. Surprisingly we averaged 15 mpg towing the boat for the entire trip. We definitely came away impressed with the capabilities of the Rover, along with the functionality of the Dormoble top. We did have several items that we plan on adding before our next family adventure. Number one being a set of parabolic springs from Rovers North; the stock 109” springs, though new, don’t flex much on the Alaskan roads. We also want more sound proofing for the inside. A new set of seats is in the works; the Dormoble seats are great for around town and the ability to fold flat into a second pair of beds is nice, but after four hours on the road our backs and rear ends were not in the best shape. Our current plan is to install four Defender seats with custom mounts in the second row to keep the walk through design. We already have made a second set of lower bunks that fold down from the upper bunks allowing us to still sleep four people in the Rover. A nice sound system is already in the works with a Tuffy box with stereo mount already waiting in the garage to be installed. One exciting thing that happed on the trip back was Kyle proposing to Lisa in Keystone Canyon outside of Valdez. We recently found out that they are planning a June wedding in Nebraska. Barbs first comment was “why don’t we drive the Rover out.” Like two kids with a Christmas catalog, Keegan and I ran off and marked every thing in the Rovers North catalog that we will need for the long trip. Life is good! _______ ! ________
SIGHTINGS Here in New England our colorful leaves now decorate our fields and roads instead of our trees. It won’t be long before snow obliterates our fields and roads. Then we’ll need lots of paper to get those woodstoves going. Fortunately, Sighters from the US and Canada have sent a bountiful supply of entries that warrant emptying out the crockery cupboards at Rovers North. As always it's helpful for rookies - and useful as a reminder for the grizzled veterans as well - to review the rules for Sightings Rule # 1 - All Sightings receive recognition and our appreciation, but not necessarily a mug. We reward only those Sightings that capture the unique qualities of Land Rovers and their owners, and display them in a distinctive way. Rule #2 - If your Sighting does not really surprise you, it won't surprise us, either, and you won't get a mug. We're delighted, but not surprised, that Land Rovers appear in British television programmes, British publications, films with British themes, and shows about African safaris. You shouldn't be surprised, either, and should consider looking for other ways to get a coffee mug. Rule #3 - At an ever-changing date before publication we close off the Sightings. If we've mentioned the Sighting in an earlier issue, we won't mention it again. If you're new to the family of Land Rover enthusiasts, you may not have seen your Sighting in an earlier issue. Rule #4 - We're not outfitting your kitchen. If you qualify, please remember - one mug per Sighting per issue. Rule #5- Sightings that are Land Rover references in books go to our Literary Land Rover editor for mention, but only when space permits. Rule #6 - Psst... if we can't read you name and address because of atrocious penmanship, we can't recognize your Sighting nor send you a mug. Psst...E-mail submissions remember we can't send a mug by e-mail. Send us your real name and shipping address, too. Rule #7 - Grudgingly, very grudgingly, the Editor admits he might make an error. Let me know if you think you've been jobbed, but all decisions of the Editor are final. Land Rover enthusiasts admire well-engineered, beautifully machined items of many sorts. So when Beretta chose to put a Series III soft top on the cover, we received a deluge of entries. As Sighter John McShane, Sudbury, VT, wrote, “it is always interesting to me that advertisers are convinced that the public is aware of the Land Rover legend and belieive that Land Rovers convey a positive and appealing image.” Nicely said, and congratulations, also, to Jeff Nichols, Fairhaven, MA, David Kolstad, Carlisle, MA, Michael Beckley, Sheridan, OR, 62

Pete Novak, Barrington, IL, noted that Emerson used two Defender 110’s to showcase their services. Steve Fireash, Hernando, MS, found a Defender 90 in use in an English scene as part of a UPS ad. Catherine Inoa, Yonkers, NY, found an American Express ad using a topless Defender on safari for its trip insurance program. Working for NATO in central Norway, Hampton Huckins, Chelmsford, MA, watched a
Jack Nicholson film called “Profession: Reporter” set in North Africa. Sure enough, there’s a Rover stuck in the desert sand. The new movie “National Treasure II” will feature a Series II 109”, according to Mark Kellgren, Charlotte, NC. The new movie “Kingdom” has its heroes riding around in a Range Rover Classic, notes Chris Whybrew, Phoenix, AZ. Dan Rao, Great Mills, MD, noted a Range Rover Classic being blown up in a movie shoot at Eastern Market. In “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” Danny DeVito drives a late ‘80’s Range Rover, according to Oolson Delancy, Guilford, CT. Jonathan Sabata, Columbia Heights, MN, notes that National Geographic Adventure magazine ran an article on the best places to live and play. They included an LR3 in the article. Chris Whybrew, Phoenix, AZ noted a Range Rover used in a Wolf Appliances TV commercial. Departures Magazine had a brief commentary on conservation efforts for the Siberian tiger. What vehicle do they have releasing a tiger in the snow? A Defender 110 crew cab with a canvas tilt, of course, noted Michael Williams, St. James, NY. Two readers, Jim Ingarra, Cheshire, CT and Lance Anderson, Uxbridge, MA, both noted that an artist for Reader’s Digest used a Discovery Series II in back cover artwork in a recent issue. Design News ran a story lauding Consumer Reports for their product testing [very debatable on automobiles], which features artwork of an LR3 navigating traffic cones, notes Dennis Yard,
San Diego, CA. Brim Crow, Carrollton, TX, noted a positive review of the supercharged Range Rover in the Dallas Morning News. Cooper Tires features a new Range Rover wearing its fancy shoes in a sales brochure, notes Dave Bowman, Orange, VA. Jason Sheehy, Mt. Sterling, OH, saw a Range Rover Classic in a new episode of Rules of Engagement. Michael Giovannozzi, Boynton Beach, FL, noted a Series II-A on the Telemondo network series “Madre Luna.” Kim Groenendyk, Peterborough, ON, Canada, noted that a Land Rover was seized as evidence on a recent episode of Law and Order. Andrew Teal, Ollala, WA, visited Times Square in New York City and saw the LR2 electronic billboard at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Sheila Simmons, Austin, TX, notes that Allure magazine wants you to know what to wear this fall. You need to wear it while leaning against the bumper of a II-A. If you travel with your pet, Healthy Pet magazine wants you to do so in a topless RHD Series II-A, noted Dana Leslie, North Bend, WA. Dale Shaffer, York, PA, noted that a Series Rover “in need of a few parts from Rovers North” appeared in a Casual Male XL catalogue. Thinking of going to Costa Rica? Adventure magazine wants you to see it from the rear of a topless II-A SW, according to the photo sent in by Brian Riley, Minneapolis, MN. Leighton Ogg, Houston, TX, reads the Kangaroo comic strip and found a Land Rover in one panel. The Bryan Adams CD So Far So Good has a Defender 90 on the rear cover, noted Chris Whybrew, Phoenix, AZ. Adams has appeared in Land Rover publicity, too. Delta Airlines’ website features the rear of a Land Rover on one page, reports Steve Ingram, Gainesville, FL. If you need another toy for Christmas, Eric DeRochambeau, N. Kingston, RI saw a tricked out Discovery model in a Hammacher Schlemmer catalogue. Volvo “borrowed” the hill descent system from Land Rover and incorporated it into the X70 and even uses the same term. Tom Proctor, and Steve Ingram, Gainesville, FL, both noted the irony. _______ ! ________
